I admire this, I admire that you told us not to expect this to be the highest DPS you can do.

Team play is very different from everything. The size of your team and the role that you must play is important. I am intrigued by any template that breaks the meta. People often pass judgement to quickly.

I make several different Necros with different builds for different things. One necro I have is made to work perfectly with my mesmer friends template. We have a very very high boon ripping power right now and can hold just about any point in PvP together especially from classes with allot of stability.

So thank you for giving us, different choices based on whim, fun or just plain interest. Cause you never know what can happen in a team environment a build that seems weak stand alone may be very strong as a unit.

You sir or miss, are flattering me

But serious, I totally aggree with you. I think it is about time many people start thinking “out of the box”, in this case out of the meta.

PS. If you want to share some cool builds, post em ^^ I am really interested

I will give it some thought I will also try out this build and let you know what i think and if I see any things we might try else that might be interesting. Maybe the commentators are right and it wont work but on other hand maybe it just needs tweaking. With changes to stability the game has changed.

It is a smart person that changes with it and a fool who clings to their old ideals and does nothing.

Please feel free to add me to your friends list.

I think you mistake why people in this particular forum are upset. I am working hard to work around the changes.

The reason why there is more debate in this forum than any other, is because the changes really hit Necro’s hard. The conversion of FITG made the skill useless. This has to be known.

Stability is already a sticking point, and how to negotiate these changes will be a point of contention for many people that play necro.

I will say that I think that Necro is one of those classes that draws in some of the most loyal followers as we try to make this build viable no matter the situation. Though it should be noted that the Revenants similarities and abilities are alluring..

Stability on dodge.. aaah so good.

Honestly, with other classes like Ele getting 10 stacks! 10! in armor of earth, lol oh my. Like we didnt get much to begin with, I would recommend everyone just expect NOT to have stability, maybe with plague…

The game just recentered around stability. The classes without it have taken an odd nerf. An indirect one. I can say that we might be able to corrupt the stability to make up with it, but with some classes having so many skills to put it back on… yeah I just don’t see it as viable.

As for the bugs, in down state. facepalm Thanks for uh fixing those finally…

However, on that note they never promised it would be more then 5v5 they never said it would be in its own queue. So I can’t say they promised me. It was just more one of those hopes..

Nightshade.2570

Wait, if “casuals” get banned from entering PvP until they have X rank, and Y build, then how do they get to X rank?

Seriously though. Why would you want to stop “casuals” from playing? As said before they have to start somewhere. Instead of whining about how bad they are, the terrible builds they use, why not try to educate them? And do it in such a way that doesn’t belittle them and tear them down. It’s not really helpful to say “Your build sucks, you don’t know what you are doing. You should use XYZ instead, doing otherwise just marks you as a noob.” Try something along the lines of. “I noticed that you seem fairly new to PvP. If you wouldn’t mind, I would like to teach you a little bit and maybe we can find something that fits your playstle, and what you want to do.”

Both are essentially saying the same thing, but the latter is far more helpful than the former.

I agree completely. You would think that this would be an elementary conclusion, how do you get there if you can’t start there? I think sometimes people forget that they started out at the bottom and had to work their way up. They also forget that being a Pro PvPer does not put you above people. Truth is we all have areas we excel at but it doesnt put us in a higher tier or class then our fellow man.

I Love PvP, at this time I don’t have the time to devote to it to be amazing but I do my best to support my team, understand the mechanics and work very hard to improve my builds and rotations. This game is about fun, it is clear that some people have lost touch with that.

If there is no new blood introduced you will never know what boundaries can be pushed what new things you will encounter and, you stop growing and improving. You are never the best at anything, and new challenges from new people are what make you better.

One of the trends I am seeing is the difference in people deploying stationary scouts and those using moving scouts. The ones using moving scouts seem to have less issue with this change then those using the stationary ones. I think as more people move to mobile scouting the more open field and smaller scale fights are popping up in turn. This is one of the reasons an extended test of any changes makes sense since until players adapt behaviors you do not get a good read on the change itself. Good hunting!

Agreed I know that moving scouts are now quite actively used on my server and its pretty cool as it does get things moving around.

Nightshade.2570

Dear Devs,
Oh great powers that hang out watching us from above, we that are the small minions of WvW hear my plea! We the few, the strong, the quiet types beseech you to consider the following factors. (okay that was me being silly)

Rarely do I make such posts but few have meant as much as this one to I and my guild, and my server. To those that like battle and fight, No White Swords has been a surprisingly good thing for WvW. I myself was actually AGAINST the idea when it was first announced and dreaded it terrible. Please bring them back to us someday…

1. More rotation While, servers are being more active in watching their towers, at the same time, people are really picking their battles over what is important to watch and what is not. There are still some who stalwartly hole up in a tower wasting tons of time and money on a tower that will fall when they go to bed. But for the most part, people are moving more, more movement means more challenge and action in WvW. No its not a karma train as others feared, as Karma training happened in WvW regardless of white swords or not. What it is, is more strategic and tactical.

2. Field fighting increased I was surprised by this, more people are now engaging groups head on at the southern part of the borderlands. Instead of holing up at the bottom of a borderlands, they are going straight for the source instead of waiting endlessly in keeps for the zerg to attack. People are engaging every group they see immediately as not engaging them means they are a hidden unknown force and suddenly that fortified keep or tower will change colors.

3. Havoc teams just became more effective. Less blobs! Everyone complains about zergs and no, that will never go away its an integral part of WvW but at the same time, 5-10-15 person Havoc teams now have so much more effectiveness in once in a while snatching a keep! This is amazing!

To summarize, no white swords have lead to, more strategy and tactics, groups breaking into smaller bits to attack several things at once, small groups gaining effectiveness, more field fighting and people getting outside of thier towers!

Now there are obviously cons to it, which I am sure that when others read this a cavalcade of people will be quick to point out. However, I dont suggest we just keep White Swords, I suggest that combined with other important changes that I hope are coming down the line to WvW this could be a very good change. (Scoring/population changes)

At the very least please consider running this event from time to time. Change is good, even a small change brings new life to things and keeps us motivated.

Now let the roasting of my good intentioned and well natured post begin,

Much love,

Agatha

Actually, Implementing a system similar to WvW only helps WvWers. I don’t know how many posts I have read where WvWers have complained about PVEers in WvW. I personally dont agree I think PVEers are the new blood that keeps WvW different and interesting. However I can see both sides of the coin and have seen a group wipe to downs.

It is my theory that acclimating to this style of PVE version of WvW helps give a hint at the fun in WvW and some knowledge of basic systems and applications in WvW. It makes WvW more navigatible and less scary and unknown.

As a former PVE Carebear myself, I speak from experience when I say it is not easy to step into WvW especially if you do not have friend support and it takes a certain awakening and understanding of the game to move there if you don’t start out as some do, eating breathing and sleeping WvW/PvP.

So I can find no better spot to look for potential new WvWers then here in the new areas such as this.

@OP, I am sorry for the way your friend was treated and how some of the people in this thread have responded. Please do not take it as a representation of WvWers as a whole.

Honestly speaking, people who are not open to new players, to uplevels and pve-ers make me see red. Those that discourage, shun, and push people away will find themselves playing this game alone one day. Suggesting people go to EOTM is not an equivalent kind suggestion, its just as bad.

These people are no better then you or I. I find that people often equate being good at one facet of the game, makes you better then everyone else in the game, and sometimes they think it makes them better then everyone in real life to…

Take care and keep your friends spirits up, there are lots of awesome friendly people in WvW.

Hi,
I am a guild leader on Devona’s Rest. We were honored to have John Corpening in our guild. We are indeed a fun loving group of misfits, not a large WvW force, we often run in a small group of skilled players but by no means zerg bust or a zerg. Our strongest hours are in the late PST evening when alot of our server has logged off to go to bed.

During the tournaments we encountered some very rough nights and some very good fights. John was there through all of this, he saw things at a different level. John remained fairly anonymous, some of my own guild was not aware he was a Dev. He heard alot of raw comments in map chat, guild chat, ect. about the things people liked and didnt like and saw first hand why. We have a better understanding of some of the challenges he faces and he definitely has a better understanding of the challenges a guild like ours that loves to WvW faces.

They did this on their free time, I know that it was a fun exercise for them (I hope) but it was still a work related item. John listened and watched and picked up on some things that weren’t even complained about to him.

It has been quiet without much activity from Dev’s in the WvW forums in the past few months. I am glad they are taking an interest and anything that comes out of this is better then silence.

I want to thank him, and all the Devs for trying to get a better view and understanding. For taking their free time to come and hang out with us, I know some of them are very passionate about WvW and already play all the time but its nice to see an effort like this bringing new ideas and someday perhaps new challenges in WvW.

I think this sums things up, we complained about siege trolled way back when at launch, and continued to do so.
We did get a reply from a mod: They cannot controls a player’s play-style.
We then gave up on complaining about this.

But for John to not even know about this annoyance shows there isnt much communication going on between the WvW devs and the WvW players’ concerns. (Not counting infractions and bans of course).

Sorry but as the saying goes, I’ll believe it when I see it.
And “We cant talk about it” is not seeing, it’s just blowing smoke.

Scoring Discussion

in WvW

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

Great start guys! There are a lot of good ideas already.

Here is a high level summary (not a proposal) of what is currently being discussed:

  • Some sort of point scaling based on population or prime time hours
  • Break the day into scoring periods. The match is decided on the scoring periods not PPT.
  • Consider score for taking objectives either in conjunction with or in place of PPT
  • Add score for kills
  • Boost the outnumbered buff (in a number of ways)
  • Consider adjusting score based on placement
  • Adjust score of objectives based on upgrade level
  • Create special objectives/achievements that occur when you are behind that give you a special reward for completing them

Someone had a question on this one from Phys that I wanted to answer:

  • Break the day into scoring periods. The match is decided on the scoring periods not PPT.

Doing this would greatly buffer runaway score. If it is off hours and one world can cap most everything because of greater coverage they still just win the scoring period rather than rack up triple score all night. It means off hours play time still has value without creating blow outs. In conjunction with some of the other suggestions it has potential. I thought that was a pretty interesting suggestion from Phys.

Lots of great ideas guys, thanks for getting this rolling!

John

I have reversed engineered some of the points that are being discussed and you mentioned in your quote above. I am only looking at the non-feasibility of these suggestions as everyone has pointed out well the feasibility.

1. Do not do population based scaling, prime time hours if your going to do point scaling. Population based scaling encourages people to try to thwart the system by controlling populations. No fun for anyone.

2. Break the day into scoring periods-(I am for reducing match times this gets plus plus) However to break the day into scoring periods I will have to think on the down sides for that as I cant come up with one at this moment.

3. There is already a scoring application for kills, I do not know that this would help the smaller server succeed in winning against large groups. Or encourage people to group more and constantly try to kill smaller numbers. (camping spawns ect.)

4. Dismantling PPT and rethinking scoring has a huge draw to me as I love things that move outside of a box. However, there is no full proof way to fix scoring issues of this kind, one must weigh if the overhaul will be enough of an improvement or just cause new issues to arise.

5. Boosting the outnumbered buff is viable however does not address the issue entirely really, and if you make it to good people will once again try to work the system and play the numbers (game).

6. Adjusting Score based on placement feels non-genuine to me, and makes me feel that there has to be a better way to do this. I am all for underdogs but to much intervention where we pat everyone on the back and tell them their a winner is not helpful. It doesn’t encourage people into WvW.

7. Adjust Score objectives based on upgrade level. I personally would rather see upgrades thrown out the window. Yep I said it, I think that people could be doing alot funner things with their time then running after dolyaks or spending money on upgrades that will be taken a few moments later. Truth is that I see more demoralization by stalwart faithful WvWers cause they stayed up all night upgrading a keep and way-pointing. I also see servers getting into dramatic episodes over people not walking dolyaks, upgrading supply camps, ect. Some people just don’t like to do this.

8. Create special objectives and achievements to help when you are behind.. I actually had an idea near this but not quite this and it wasn’t to help with being behind but incentivising(which helps in the long run). Once again special objectives to help with being behind could work but it would have to be things that people ahead couldnt do. Again it borderlines a pat on the back everybody wins concern.

I have suggestions completely apart from these but, alas my lunch is over

Hi guys, I noticed you are talking alot about the customization and building in the progressive part of guild halls.

What if, Guilds could unlock, certain skins for guild halls. These skins would be for example: WvW skin (look like one of the keeps) Dry Top Skin (looks like a broken airship in the desert. Ascalonian Skin looks like the catacombs.

Unlocking these *skins for guild halls could be done by member activities in certain regions and count towards the overall progress of the Skin Unlock. Guilds could unlock multitudes of skins ect.

Just a thought, after initial build of the guild hall you could start off standard and then unlock these skins to add more customization. It would also help encourage guilds to try out things like WvW, New content/Old content ect.

If you do not go with instanced and decide to do an open world guild hall the skin could be on the inside of the guild hall like the main room of it. You could get drops to deco according to that theme in the regions that you unlock the skin from for added benefit.

If you instance the guild halls, you could change the entire guild hall look.

Dear Chris,

I hope all goes well with you.

Now this is going to be difficult as I know that people are really not going to like what I am about to say.

However, it is just something that I hope can be kept in the back of your minds when designing these things or approaching these topics.

Problem : I am concerned about how guild halls will section off large parts of communities. I see this fracturing people. The point of mega servers was so that when you went to a map you would see more people around. I do not know how much of an impact Guild Halls will have on this aspect of the game. I truly love going to Lions arch or any place where groups converge and seeing all the names and people around. I would hate for Guild halls to make it so that guilds could shut themselves away. As a Guild leader myself alot of recruiting occurs from being around others.

Solutions? : I am not saying don’t have guild halls, I just wish there was a way to make them more community friendly, by perhaps having the portals for them in Lions arch, not including items that people use alot (like the mystic forge) so that Guilds still go out and and mingle with everyone else.

Or consider alliance halls.. For conglomerations of guilds…

Thanks for listening.

Some devs should ahve used upscaleds and not joined guilds, to get a more rounded picture of what casual wvw is like.

Instead they all joined active guilds and will come away with a completely skewed view of what wvw is really like week in week out.

You don’t know if they used Upscales or not. Thats an assumption on your part.

As for a skewed view, there is no way to get a perfect view but anyone can see that there has been alot more discussion on these boards then prior to the Adopt-A-Dev program.

Any understanding of the game and what players like and dislike is better then none. This is quite alot of personal time to put into a project and I think its been a good experience for both Devs and the servers they are on.

Merging Servers vs. Mega Servers.

One is is solid the other is flowing. Either way there are actual ways to maintain a servers sense of identity and pride. I prefer the Mega servers idea as it provides a long term solution vs. a temporal one of Merging servers.

With Mega servers:

A. Preliminary set-up. Server alliances are introduced and servers are given special titles when joining that alliance. Alliances are given special armor pursuant to that alliance as a memento. Alliances are given Strongholds to unite in. How an alliances performs in WvW (activity ect) unlocks special things, what those are I have no clue.

B. Transition period: Server alliances are given one of three factions to represent. Movement between factions will be locked after movement during transition periods. Alliances are given guaranteed of movement together to a faction. (The three factions could be a semi-evil faction, a rebel faction, and a Good guy faction.) If one faction becomes to full it is closed off and alliances must pick between the other two, until all factions have been filled.

C. Post-Move. Mega servers put Guilds/Alliance into maps first filling up maps and creating them as needed. If a map becomes empty it is cleared just like in PVE.

IF a map has to many of one side on it and is imbalanced the amount of points gained from taking stuff alliances with the *outnumbered buff drops to almost nill, people are given the option to move to EOTM or queu up for a more even map.
OR
alternatively, if one faction is dominating(with numbers not good fighting ability lol) a current map, new maps are not created for uneven numbers and they are queud (they can move to eotm if they want while they wait) just like they are now for one of the already created maps.

Merging Servers:*
All Servers are re-rolled into a newly named server.

A. Preliminary: To maintain a sense of identity Servers are allowed to make Alliances named after their former server and are once more introduced with the same or similiar rewards described above. The alliances is allowed to vote on the top three choices for which named server they would be moved to. The alliance is guaranteed to move together.

B. Transition: Alliances are moved to new server and servers become locked for a period of time.

C. Post-Move, Incentives are given and tools to help the new alliance continue to grow and stay alive. Perhaps Alliance strongholds are introduced. During off hours and low peak times a system is introduced to tied to the outnumbered buff where taking items from outnumbered servers is not optimal.

Whew it in writing now I cant take it back.. Its easier for me to look at this way..

new tournament achievements are awful

Basically removing the achievement requirement during a tournament is an experimental step we took to reduce the incentive for achievement grinding. We want people to play WvW, and not focus too heavily on satisfying achievement requirements.

If we find that players prefer having numerous things to check off a list, then we would certainly take that feedback into account and consider it for future tournaments.

Dear Jessica,

I think what has happened is something that the more dedicated WvWers did not expect. It has been nice meeting the rewards right away. However, some of our guilds on our server were looking forward to the opportunity to recruit new players into WvW. New people are really the WvW life blood as I am sure you know.

So what happened is we noticed the fairweathers became even more fairweather as grabbing those five achievements meant they popped in crowded up the reset night then took off.

My suggestion is that there is a balance between how much is required, I liked that rewards were dispensed weekly and it was much simpler and shorter this time. However, I wish that the achievements to required had been a bit more robust. Maybe more like a:

WvW daily achievement, where you needed to complete certain things in WvW each day but a low number of them. Or complete it 3 times during the week.

Just a thought

Take care!

I understand that they really can’t say much; but at the very least some sort of post where a dev or mod admits “yes the server matchups are extremely imbalanced and in no way conducive to game growth.”

I am trying to understand how this would help anything. I think its more productive to work on solutions, it is almost like you want the Devs to admit fault? These arena net employees?

WvW is in the state its in to a lot of normal factors, that occur after a certain amount of time. Combine this with how very intelligent players are, and coming up with things that one person or a group of 20 couldnt come up with in advance. Every day I am seeing new ideas, and things being done.

At the end of the day just put up your suggestions and ideas, perhaps one of them will hit the nail on the head and help towards a solution. I know alot of us on these boards feel that we havent gotten enough WUV in WuvWuv:) but we are pretty hungry raptors around here.

Pouncing on anyone that walks through the door..especially that unsuspecting Dev…

Remove the game downleveling in lower level areas and allow players to PVP only in 1-15 PVE starter areas.

Oh yes its sadistic, and I shudder for every uplevel that would walk out that portal…

Lets talk about Siege Disablers...

I have three thoughts on this.

I am hoping here that the Dev’s already know that this will need some slight tweeks. I see that they tried to balance us, with a bump to siege disablers for defense/offense and a bump to golem mastery, (to keep those beloved golems from rofflestomping the world).

However I am starting to fear building siege on any gate, as rams can be completely dismantled over and over.

Cata’s you have a shot at deflecting it but iits a small window.

I see three things here:
Shorten the amount of time that the siege can be disabled for.
Apply a cooldown in between disabling.
Diminishing returns on siege that has been disabled already once in a certain time span.

I really love the trap/trick, it is good in most cases, however it has reduced the fighting in a way I don’t think was intended.

Now you just leave two people in a keep/tower with lots of supply and siege disablers and everyone else can go take a nap.

Update on my Adopted Dev’s Progress.

Dear WvW Spirits,

I have done my best to safeguard and protect my Adopted Dev. I am not responsible however and can not be held responsible for his mutiple losses of life.

I may have gotten him killed at North camp.

I may have gotten him killed at Stonemist

I may have gotten him killed off a cliff….

I think you get the jist.

However i promise that as a Necro I have put every effort in restoring his ability to live a full and almost, normal life hereafter.

I think that Labeling is still the way to go, a filter where you only build siege you want. The exhaustion idea has merit but again I go back to a simple time factor, this voting and such causes me pause as the time it takes sometimes just for me to get someone to second my vote when removing party members.

Honestly, if the troll throws mutiple pieces of siege imagine voting for the timer to be shorter on 10 pieces of Siege…. By the time you get them all voted and removed your enemy has definitely wiped you.

Hahhahah let me begin by saying, I don’t like sharks, i have an innate fear of them in general and swimming on my toon in bay is disturbing.

However I can agree that they rarely bother me as I swim across.

The thing is though I don’t think they need a buff for the simple fact that we ussually already have enough to deal with at bay, ie our enemies.

I mean, no Sharknados okay….

Great discussion so far! I came back from a couple of meetings and was blown away to see so many excellent ideas and constructive posts.

There were a number of suggestions around labelling dropped siege to allow players decide which siege to build. I like the idea of filtering dropped siege. Maybe you could have some of the following settings:

  • Show my Commander’s siege
  • Show my Squad’s siege
  • Show my Guild’s siege
  • Show my Party’s siege

If siege dropped doesn’t meet one of the settings you pick, you won’t get an interact for them.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions!
John

This is the simplest idea, creates the least havoc and only has a downside for the players who are new to WvW.

I think spending time voting/hunting/ and searching for players who actually may be new and just think its fun to throw siege around, is largely not the direction a community should take.

From a commanding perspective, Voting on disabling siege is to time consuming and allows your enemy more time to gather their forces to fight you off.

Not being able to build unwanted siege, is effective and alleviates the system without bottlenecking wvw by applying exhaustion which is really just applying, more timers and rules.
