Punishing the "Better" player

in PvP

Nightshade.2570

Yes you are punishing your team mates who by trying, by that simple fact, are the “better players” because they are at least learning something.

There are very obvious times as pointed out by people above like 4v5’s when it is pointless to continue. However, the enemy team opening with a 50-100 lead is NOT one of them.

This shows your lack of knowledge of the game. In fact this kind of lead actually makes the enemy team lazy and it is more possible to take back the map from them.

The number one thing I see is enemy teams who have a solid lead who lose it because they got sloppy and stopped staying on top of the map because they thought they had a certain win. However if your team at that moment switches thier tactics and only holds sides or rotates and just decaps and basically changes thier game play you will absolutely have a shot at winning the game.

Going AFK at the beginning of the match is punishing people for not being up to your percieved standards. It is an assumption that you were the best player on the team. Sure people do dumb things sometimes but that doesnt mean they will always continue to do them.

Sometimes a bit of guidance, “lets play sides” or pinging where you need help can turn things around. Are there times when it doesnt matter and your team is out manned, yes! yes definitely! The matchmaker definitely sets up these matches however, you can not know this in the first fight of the game.

There are so many nuances for example, you may have a great rotational team but not able to hold thier own in a mid fight, this is not because of skill because of team comps. Or you may not be able to out rotate them but your team may be great at holding points you have to adjust on the fly and as you go.

Stop for a moment and reconsider, use the mistakes that your team makes as a learning curve, and in fact actually fight out some of these “hopeless” games so you can learn how to work with a team and in fact improve yourself as a PvPer.

As the Originator of this post from last season…

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/Please-stop-the-new-Pve-player-hate/first

And other posts where I argued vehemently against removing ascended rewards and instead figuring out a system to help new Players, where i predicted that we needed the new blood that we would end up with JUST a small pool of hardcore vets and would lose even casual PvPers…

I can go back to almost every post I made last season about the disastrous consequences of the changes the small amount of people on these boards were constantly demanding., which were:

No Ascended rewards
Get rid of Pve’ers
Get rid of Esports…

For the record, I have stated constant other solutions to the above changes and constantly tried to be constructive, I do love PvP and did not want to see it in this state.

Instead of the community embracing a good change and figuring out ways to deal with the issues the larger player pool caused (larger player pool is always good, it breeds hype excitement people are attracted by this ect).

Instead we could of:

Lowered the amount of ascended you recieved per season without requiring crafting.
Helped new players
Continued our tournaments-or given incentive, with high level players so they would keep streaming and attract people to the game

I hope someones considering all this I am waiting hopefully for next season for now I will either hop about in unranked or play other games. I still have faith and hope against hope this will all be resolved and this was just a minor blipp in later seasons.

Did GW2 lose its identity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

Identity is what we make it. As a young person we exude one identity that people understand us to be.

However, as we age and grow, we change in some ways our identity changes, how we identify with others and how they identify with us.

Growth is essential to any identity , retaining a young or immature identity in fear of change is not a good idea. We must grow as must a game.

What we really debate here is, how much of identity change is good and how much is not. Are we, that are judging it, byist, and pushing for things to stay the same because we don’t like change, or are we genuinely concerned for the changes we take place.

There were both good(gliding, guild halls ect) and bad things(balance issues, difficult content that was hard for casual players to overcome) that came out of HOT. The fact that it is so often labeled as the point at which things went awry is just not true. The truth is an expansion is necessary indeed i hope for another but I have grown unsure that will come about at this point.

I feel strongly that I see people that struggle with not wanting change, and those that are genuinely concerned.

Stop looking for the spot that identity was lost and begin looking at how it has changed for better and for worse.

You need to be fair with yourself and determine how much of these changes were player driven, (the call for new content like raids, players growing bored and finding ways to do things that weren’t intended ect)

Hind sight is always 20/20 and I often find its easy to pine for the old days but I have also seen reversion of changes immediately renew the boredom in people.

Be careful that you are not a person that fears change and wants what is comfortable back again and really define what would draw in or bring back players. The health of the game thrives on a populated game. Your enjoyment depends largely on community, reward for time spent, and new challenges to grow you.

New content, in the video game world, and to get any longevity out of it, it requires a commitment to follow up with this change of identities to stay in touch with your market target group and be sure you are delivering what you say.

Guild Wars 2 definitely needs to evolve it needs to grow an independent identity, the devs I have met and who work for the game have always tried to do things differently then other games and I would encourage them to continue to do it differently. That is the only true identity I will concede this game. That it has always been and claimed to be different, to look at new ways to do things. They won’t always hit the mark but there is nothing gained when nothing is risked.

No this wouldnt happen if just a bunch of extra PvE players left. This only happens when mostly PvP and PvE players leave. As in they are either in unranked playing just for fun or like me, with several thousand matches, is taking a break and hoping that next season will be better.

Suggestions and Constructive Criticism.

Nightshade.2570

Okay, so I have been posting here more then I normally do and I want to state first off this is not typical for me in the past. I am pretty passionate about PvP.

I have played PvP in alot of games and I really enjoy it in GW2. You guys did a great job with season 5 and I really liked your changes. Placement matches is great! The new UI’s, the improvement to matchmaking it was all there. There were of course issues but the good far outweighed the bad. It was really all just growing pains.

Then six hit, and I can’t blame you for what happened with the Poll. The voters on these boards voted against something that I think alot of them didnt understand. Sadly I saw some of your streamers posting blind links to it telling everyone to go here and vote no Not accusing anyone it just creates this mentality of people not paying attention to what they are actually voting for.

Anyhow moving on. I wanted to start a thread that involved some constructive criticism and suggestions, or even creative ideas so that people here could maybe give some sound ideas that might or might not hit home with the Devs that are in PvP.

1. All polls should be advertised much like they were in WvW. Players that logged into WvW were sent mails encouraging them to vote. Players that log into the PvP lobby or, queue up for matches recently should also get a notice.

2. In Ranked-During Seasons-Matches that are scored super close as in the losing team hits something above 400 should not cause Match Making rating loss(preferably they do not gain or lose) or at the very least minimally, Higher Reward should still be given to the winning team but this is very much an even draw match. It would encourage players to keep playing even when thier team is losing.

3. A new concept for new players should be explored, this is to big of a concept to put in a thread about many things it needs its own thread. This discussion should involve a way for incentivising new players to take part in a more rigorous tutorial, or even a buddy system where players witha certain amount of games buddy up with players that are new to teach them, both parties getting a reward (unranked only).

4. Ascended armor tokens should not cost us gold and in fact you should bring it back to where we get to pick out a piece and not craft it. To keep it from being a farm of ascended armor Limit the number of pieces you get per season. You see I don’t mind just getting two pieces a season, building a suit slowly is no big deal to a PvPer. However I was inches from trying other aspects of the game because i could put a suit together from PvP when it was taken away. I have no interest in spending gold, crafting and gathering ingredients to make ascended armor from PvP. I can do it ten times easier in PvE.

5. Class MMR-I know we voted against locking your class upon queue. I know that makes it difficult to do the Class specific MMR and the leaderboards for classes but this would of been so much fun! Please consider locking the matchmaker to at teh very least not allow more then two of something on a team. Or, have the system warn people queueing up on a class that it has alot of players queuing on with a message that their wait time will be longer. I don’t know how possible it is, and I know I may be way off base but I still want to see this.

6. Consider a game format, for dailies where classes fought each other. IE five v five with necros on both teams to alleviate the system when there are to many of one thing. Let players opt into proving who is the best! Use the same maps, just restrict it to a necro only match or a guard only match. Lock these from switching from queue up! Give it a leaderboard!

Theres alot more I hope others will follow the spirit of my thread and give some good ideas. I Hope some of this or even a small fragment hits home.

Thank you for your time,
Respectfully yours,
Aggie Se’leraun

The season that broke the camels back

But the community voted for a no on Profession mmr because it would be bad.

Please don’t lie. A-net held a petition to decide on class locking for queuing. Here is the poll which would’ve gotten a yes vote:

New pvp revamp poll:
Locked queing
Profession based mmr
Team composition locking (no more than 2 of each class per team)

Instead, they tried to add only one part of the puzzle, and of course people voted no. When you roll thief and you encounter a 4 dh team, your only option is to reroll, which wouldn’t work with queue locking. They need to add everything at once for a new system to work. It’s like trying to make eyes work without tear ducts. They shot themselves in the foot with the poll. It was voted no, but for good reason. Pvpers don’t want to wait X months for A-Net to fix all the problems locked queuing on its own would cause.

The devs said that it was to complicated to build the Matchmaking system to balance around class locking, so they can’t do it. People need to go read what the devs said in that thread.

They made it pretty clear they needed to lock your class from the moment you match up in order to use the class data.

So because people voted against the poll, we get none of it. If you were hoping to hold out for them to lock classes in the matchmaking system, based on their comments, its not happening.

Wait, they voted no for profession mmr? kitten PvP community, your destroying yourself.

No, he’s just using an escapegoat…..

Players voted “No” to locking classes at the start of the game and that’s it.

We can still have better matchmaking, we can still have Profession MMR if Anet wants to give it to us.

You didnt read the thread. The Devs for PvP specifically came out and said, that they needed to lock classes the minute you queued in order to use class specific MMR and make Class leaderboards. Which makes sense as players could manipulate things by queueing as one class they arent good on then switching to another during the waiting period.

So it had to be locked in order to use Class stats. We won’t be getting that now, as players can change to whatever class up until the final bell.

People rarely switch classes when there are more then one of them on a team because they either don’t have the resources to (newer or just a single class player) or because they don’t feel like it.

In higher rankings say, legendary, there is a higher consistency of people switching classes. In gold and below I would wager it is very uncommon and most people stick to the class they want to play. Part of this is a lack of understanding, their ranger is OP normally so why wouldnt three rangers be even better?

Sure three rangers can be strong, even OP three of any class can be if the three people playing them are actually good at this class. Also, it depends what they are up against. Teams that can overcome ranger healing or rangers that don’t run the healing variant of thier class change the game completely.

There are so many things to consider that it is not common for someone newer or who doesnt play consistantly to take all this into consideration. Depending on players to balance out a match only happens in higher levels and I would wager even there it is not as effective as people think.

I am hopeful, my only suggestion is that perhaps the Devs look at letting people know they are queueing up on a class that is popular and that thier wait for a match will be longer. Perhaps blocking dailies only to unranked pvp. Some method of discouraging people from stacking on professions they are not good at but have a high mmr in general needs to be addressed so that the matchmaker can begin properly matching and not stack several of the same class on a team. There should never be more then two of anything and definitely not instances of 3-4 of the same thing or 2 sets of the same thing in ranked.

Why There Seems Few Players (possibly)

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

That may be part of it but, nonetheless, in past seasons there were enough players who didnt care about such things to make it feel active.

Also, without the rewards you are right not much reason to play all season unless you want to be on the leaderboard.

So I think you will find some people just playing unranked for fun right now, a majority of players just hoping for a better next season, and then the vets that want to be on the leaderboard, or people that are trying to get in the top 250, or maybe don’t have the backpack done, struggling through.

[Proposal] Victory Point Based MMR

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

Actually its the matches that have a win and loss between 450 and 500 that I would like to see adjusted the most or even 400-500. These matches are good matches each team is really have a great time but a loss is a loss and it kills the drive on the part of the team that loses to strive for comebacks. For example if a game ends in 490 to 501, or in some cases I have had like 499-500, this should be a huge factor and not cause a reduction at all or really ver minimally to the losing team. This means the matchmaker did a great job and definitely both teams should be rewarded in some way. In fact you shouldnt just lower the amount of rating that the losing team gets but incentivise these matches greatly as in a bonus chest or something. Not a pips based thing because you always want people striving for that bonus chest in ranked or unranked. The lack of rating loss or at least a minimal one would make it more rewarding for teams to strive for this in ranked play.

Population

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

I feel like the population has declined to alarming levels in PvP. This results in incredibly un-balanced and un-fun matches.
I was rank 21 on the EU leaderboards when I started playing today. (slightly above 1800 rating). I duod with a player that had ~1770 rating. We get put in games with 1320 mmr players.
I added them to friendslist after seeing them running core guard builds and farming bosses on Forests aswell as feeding into unfavorable matchups. (Thief Rev vs Ele Necro).

I get that it’s hard maintaining a good matchmaking system when the population probably is at an all time low. However I’d prefer waiting 15 minutes a game for this NOT to happen.

There is a lack of interest in pvp from players atm, and its easy to see why.

*Duo que players 2-2-1 vs solo players 1-1-1-1-1
*patches only once every 4 months or so, and only to change a few recharge skills.
*players that duo que , shouldnt be in the same leaderbord as players that solo que.

  • big gap in skill play from the players in the same team , its so annoying to see that u are playing with or vs players , that have 0 awereness of pvp
*still no skill templates to save builds( i change build almost every game)
imo poor skill balance between classes, some classes are much stronger ( mesmer/ warrior)

So ofc players start to care less and less.
I only played 10 games this season

Some people only Duo queue cause they like playing with friends, unranked is not great and the rewards are in ranked. So in essence you would be shaving off even more of the PvP population if you did that.

The problem isn’t that we need to make more rules and restrict more people, the problem is that we need to find a way to open things back up again, and welcome in all the people that everyone last season, complained about being here.

Here is some more gold for you all.

so we got placed on a team with 3 rangers. But enemy team gets 2 guardians and 2 mesmers. I’m sorry, but couldn’t the match maker give us one of the mesmers? or one of those dragonhunters (lol). Or what about swap a ranger for an ele?

No, that would be too fair.

the pathetic joke matchmaking continues. One of our rangers sits on treb half match shooting at air and chalk up another loss for me! (to bronze i go today)

Heres an even deeper thought on this one. Cause I have experienced exactly the same.
So if the poll had gone through to lock Queue from the moment you queue, (as you can see no one switched on this team to fix imbalances so this is an instance where that poll would of done good,) then, what you would of found is that you probably wouldnt of had this match up, period.

Heres the key, this match up probably wouldnt of happened as the matchmaker would of factored in class. I suspect some of the people that were double or triple stacked on these teams were in fact doing thier dailies. Even if they werent you probably had a mixture of people that were good at the classes and trying out new classes. Thusly they would of had a different MMR from each other and the points spread would of been different, meaning the Matchmaker wouldnt of matched the teams this way.

I know I am crying over spilt milk, but people voted very uninformed on that poll and I want people to see where the differences would of come into play.

Very Dissapointed with the Poll

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

Actually what a lot of people didnt realize is that the reason they shot the poll down, actually will keep that reason for ever happening.

Basically the biggest thing I have heard, is that they wanted ANET to address class stacking in matches prior to presenting this poll to us. So I ask you to stop and think about this for one minute.

This poll actually HAD to come first, and it HAD to go through in order for them to address class stacking. There is no reason to do anything if players are allowed to change thier class after the queue. You see the matchmaker can try to balance and not put more then one class on a team, and then a player can switch to the class that the matchmaker originally balanced.

If its not locked people can move to classes thusly unbalancing all the matchmakers hard work.

However I do want to say this. The outcome of the poll being shot down is, it helped people that were more hard core PvPers, at levels above gold. From my understanding that is not the majority.

I know that new people in pvp and most average pvpers do not come to these boards. There was no mention of the poll in game, PvPers didnt get letters to thier accounts like they did for WvW, and so I question whether this poll really represented new players and average players.

In my mind it catered specifically to the people that come to these boards or go to reddit, and sadly I don’t think that was a majority. In fact the new people to pvp have no voice and I feel for them.

The removal of the Ascended armor, and changing it to a token.
The lack of class locking so that new players who dont have the knowledge or the characters ready to go to switch to, puts them at a disadvantage.
The ending of tournaments and lack of Pro-league players streaming GW2 anymore..

These are all changes that has me concerned about the population of PvP.

My questions is, respectfully, who are you making this game for. Please consider these items all in one stream together. Sometimes you will have to go against what these boards cry about adn do what is best for the health of the game.

I am definitely a GW2 and PvP supporter and I think this game is fantastic, but please read over my points and consider them heavily.

Nightshade.2570

My friend and I, are debating if there is a reason for us to play six, based on how little seems to have changed since five. Honestly, we were going to gear up our characters with ascended armor but now that we have to craft it we arent really interested in that .

We are trying to find a reason, since we have the backpieces for a few seasons now, and have gotten what the chest rewards offer, any reason to go into six. The current meta, and balance are not very fun to play in either.

This is hard as we both love PvP but it is only a matter of time before they squash playing ranked with your friends to. So on that note we are considering exploring other options.

The poll that used your class data to help with matchmaking was shot down so the thrill of trying out a class this season that perhaps we hadn’t is gone to as generally we will just get smashed at our current MMR on something new.

I am just uncertain about it and figure I will see how it goes, give it a chance but, as much as I love this game and I love PvP I am having trouble staying positive at this point as I ussually am.

Perhaps just an off day for me.

To really understand a class go play it.

This is the only chance you will really have in beating it.

Even then its risky to 1v1 a guard or any tanky class on necro. Necro is better in team fights.

Warrior balance question

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

As a necro, I used to be able to corrupt alot of these classes but the changes to condition removal, and healing that was given out widely to classes across the board in this patch has had an overall effect. Most classes, got buffs to healing and condition removal and that fact alone is a nerf to necros regardless of the changes we were given.

Even with mutiple ways to corrupt, most classes including warrior can easily reverse all this now, with different damage mitigators. Most of them after being corrupted just simply cleared and reestablished thier boons.

You will be seeing less necros, it will not be a preferred class and that fact alone changes the balance of PvP quite a bit. Necros are not unuseful dont get me wrong, they just won’t be the preferred character for less experienced people to play.

At this point on necro you really need to know what your doing to survive, and that is not friendly to newer players thusly pushing new players in pvp towards, the easier to survive on classes.

I agree with you to a certain degree. I placed into upper gold and felt that was appropriate. I held that spot and improved it on and off for a bit, but suddenly about a month and a half into the season, (6) i began a tailspin spiral down that took me all the way to bronze.

At first I panicked, had I suddenly gotten horrible at PvP? I took a break for a day or two and tried to look at things from a new perspective. What I realized was that what I was pairing with, what people were playing, who was playing at what time suddenly mattered due to the fact that at that point in the season there were less people playing ranked. Indeed I realized that the matchmaking system was still pushing out fast queue times while actual players in PvP dipped for a couple weeks as many had reached the end rewards (byzantium) ect or gotten thier backpiece. Things Righted themselves towards the end of the season and I returned to my spot in gold as suddenly as I had dropped.

So, while I agree many people are exactly where they place with a slight degree of margin up and down, in general, low pvp populations can affect your team mates and if you are in gold level you really arent equipped to carry team mates as a legendary player can.

I Have no ego about me and never have and have always understood I was an Average (on good days slightly above average player). What I expect, are good matches with generally close scores regardless, and I am willing to wait in Queue for that.

I dont need 2 minutes or less queue times if it will mean a bad match for me. I will wait 3-4 with no issue. Even 5 if need be.

On a side note… and I mentioned this in the actual thread about Class locking. Most people that argued that they needed to switch once they got into a match due to finding out they needed other builds ,

Didn’t read that no matter what, you will not be switching after the warm up timer ends no matter what you vote. In fact I can already see all the 4v5 matches where people can’t get back in because they left to late to switch classes and the warm-up timer goes off.

They will be locked out of the game, this is why it would of just been better to lock it upon Queue up and let Arena Net figure out how to better balance classes. As in, while they couldnt have the system doing team synergies and such, they could of had a hard rule in place that never allowed more then 2 of the same class per team.

Or they could of made people pick characters they want to play based on what others havent picked (though this decidedly comes with to much work so the above solution is better.)

Oh well! No class specific leaderboards for us!

Nightshade.2570

Dear OP,

I am sorry that you and the rest of us have to give up the thought of actual good rewards in PvP.

Let me tell you what caused this to happen. At the beginning of the season five, a few people here on the boards lost their minds because PVE players were coming to PvP. This crime against nature caused much hatred towards the new Potential PvPers (as in they had potential but I am sure many of them were run off).

The threads of vile disgust at PvP offering ascended armor, and drawing in new players to the game mode was pretty rampant on these boards.

I myself saw it as a great idea that had the potential of reinvigorating interest in PvP and thought that things had finally gone in the right direction. As I have always touted, new blood is the life blood to each game mode and without it well, long queue times ect..

You see I started this game in PVE myself, and now I mostly play PVP, the thing is that I had sorta wanted to build some suits for my characters and maybe play some other game modes again. I was planning on using this ascended armor to do so as hey I was working pretty hard for it, seasons arent a walk in the park really, I spend as much time in PvP each night as people do in raids and wvw so why not?

Sadly and for an unexplained reason, (trust me I ussually agree with the devs, but I just can’t on this one.)They actually listened to the infuriated comments that went on here and , so they while they didnt take the ascended away completely they just gave us a crafting ingredient that bypassed some of the work.

sigh I doubt myself or many other PvPers will put that time in to building ascended suits as you can see many have just gone back to, well I mostly PvP why would I need it, as the work is just not worth our efforts.

At this point we want to jump into things with suits ready not go out and farm them up, as we already invest a significant amount of time into the game.

My solution and or suggestion would of been to just slow down the number of pieces of Ascended armor you could get per season to maybe one or two, thusly making it a long term operation. At least you are still working towards a piece and you don’t have to buy or hunt down the materials on top of your efforts in PvP.

One really has to ask Oneself, why would you ever complain about good rewards and yet… that is exactly what lead to this.

Signed,
Bewildered and Bothered

People don’t seem to understand that no matter what they do they arent switching to another class during a match they can only switch classes prior to the match starting, I think at that 10 second timer that pulls everyone back into home base.

In any case, profession leaderboards would of been awesome!

What people say and actually do doesnt happen. I rarely can pull together a full five man team and I suspect most new players wont be able to do that. Meanwhile alot of people like to play with 1-2 friends in PvP and they will be totally cut out.

In general the biggest reason this wont happen is, the queue time for full 5 man teams will probably range around 20 minutes cause there absolutely won’t be enough of them . Thats why they didnt do it in the first place.

Nightshade.2570

Hello everyone.

For everyone that voted no, I am posting for you exactly what you voted for. Alot of people blindly voted no (cause others told them to and said arena net was trying to get away with something) thinking that it would still allow them to switch builds, during a match. If you read below there will be no switching of anything once the second timer goes off and everyone is pulled back to home base. Your no vote only will allow you to switch prior to the second warning bell.

“No
No, I want to be able to switch professions up until the round begins.

Players can adjust team composition during match warmup."

Voting YES would of allowed them to use class distinctions in MMR and even create a leaderboard (which would of been pretty cool) tracking people via class! It would of opened up an array of possibilities. No matter what you do you aren’t switching during a match anymore you can vote No or Yes all day. Thats what I think alot of people don’t realize.

I had a guy argue with me that alot of times you get into a match and realize you need a DPS instead of a Tank build so he had characters of the same class set up so he could easily switch. He didnt know what to say when I pointed out to him that during a match regardless of what he chose, he wasn’t switching to anything else.

In order to improve our match making system we needed this and I am pretty saddened to see that people really don’t understand what we are votiing on and selfishly and foolishly think they can fix the match making system themselves instead of working with the devs to improve it.

You may think your stellar at PvP and you may think that you switching classes fixes things because your MMR is high. But more and more people will leave as things continue to stay the way they are, and you will fine soon, you will be playing with no one.

You can cry all day now, when you get stacks of the same class on your team because there is no reason if they can’t lock class switching for them to fix stacking in the matchmaker.

Duo Q MUST GO for Season 6

in PvP

Nightshade.2570

I know friends that have already left that were unhappy about being able to bring even 3-4 in ranked.

If the game chooses to completely discourage playing PvP with a friend, I will probably give it up as well. I do like PvP but spending my evening with my friends is far more important and there are other games I can find this in.

Most pvp games allow you to queue up with friends. This Solo Queue mentality that is being pushed is anything but good for the growth and continuance of the game.

People don’t realize that they have purposely stacked teams against Duo teams, and that ussually the side that has a team of two on it is up against a higher MMR on the other side in order to compensate for the coordination.

People want to blame it on something, why they lose instead of looking inward at what they could of done differently. Every game I lose whether up against a team of two on the other side or two teams of two or not, I look at myself and consider what I could of done differently to improve the games chances.

I guarantee that removing Duo queue will lead to all the same complaining people, just finding something new to complain about, or just going after the typical complaints more voraciously.

Be honest with yourself, Duo queues are not your problem, there are some very new players who have no voice communication that team up together all the time. The game stacks agaisnt that mmr and it is actually harder to run in a team sometimes then solo.

And yes I know there is unranked but that place is far to volatile and wildly unreliable to consider it teh place I want to spend every evening.

Roleplay. How is it "accomplshed" in GW2?

I play a 3000 year old Vampire that is an unkillable Methusalah. She also slays dragons in her spare time.

:) Just kidding.

I tend to like playing humble but slightly insane characters. Such as a bee loving fanatic who thinks or perhaps she can, communicate with bees. She has trouble making friends though and makes her living pretty much selling high quality honey. In general its odd but still not legendary.

Hilarious when she gets caught up in an adventure. Though I have found it hard to break into the roleplay community here in GW2 they seem nice, but few will interact with you if they don’t know you.

So alot of my roleplay I admit is randomly in lions arch with myself and anyone willing to go along with it.

So considering that the world of Tyria is ripe with ancient and collectible spoons, I am going to file a legitimate complaint about the validity of forks.

First and foremost, this gives the whole tourist feeling of collecting collectible spoons from locations of interest. Such as inside a Dragons body…

Or inside the lord of a Tower…

Now, while this is an interesting joke, and rather effective one as I am sure the people of Tyria are relishing thier vast spoon collections, I am not amused.

My character, is practical and what she really wants is a fork. You see, shes not very good with spoons when trying to consume the various odd meats of Lion’s arch.

Its not fair that the spoon must run away with a spoon instead of the fork! The dragons are rising because the balance of spoons is way off in Tyria and we are tired of trying to scoop up items that are meant for fork prong stabbing!

In fact I am pretty sure that Queen Jennah is spoon person and behind alot of these collectible “spoons”

You need to bring balance to the Forks…
:)

Happy friday,
A disgruntled Fork lover.

Should Ele Get A Damage Build?

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

Well, every class has a damage build. Actually a good staff ele can do alot of damage. However, the issue is not that the build isnt necessarily good enough, its that the team needs support.

Currently there are only two classes that can give strong healing support, that is Ele and just recently added Ranger.

Often times if you look at the comps of the other team you will see that you need your ele for support, such as holding the point because of their great healing and condi clear, keeping you alive against high damage teams, ect.

It is similar to the debate ongoing over necros who, at best used for corruption or condition damage. Otherwise we are useless to our teams.

Stupid rule for PVP

Nightshade.2570

It is hard when you hit a glitch and you disconnect for no fault of your own. For example last night the queue popped apparently but the accept button never came up on neither my teammates or my own screen. Seconds later we were just mysteriously removed from the queue and given dishonor.

Obviously a glitch when it happens to both of you.

However, That being said while from time to time the game may be imperfect, (how dare it) I often find that people complain far more about afk, disconnect people. In fact if there was no measure of punishment for this behaviour, ranked would be a nightmare.

Dishonor is a necessary function it barely tamps down the troll behaviour at the beginning of the season as it is. So many simply go around it by standing afk at home base, at least if they actually disconnect or leave your match they have to wait and won’t be queued more then likely with you.

So while I empathize with the frustration when it appears to be a game glitch(possibly or just a lag in your ISP) that causes you dishonor, it would be hard to play ranked at all if people were allowed to just leave a match with no retribution.

Cyber Bullied Because of Being a Core Player

Nightshade.2570

First off I rarely pay attention to what build people play, I pay attention to thier performance. If they support the team and do thier best then win or lose it matters not to me what they run.

I know core players can be effective if they are good.

But let us discuss the cyber bullying. May I suggest you block, as I do anyone that begins spouting vitrol in your direction. Block them and move on.

Not all of it may be directed at your decision to be a core player, alot of it is just a few toxic individuals in PvP. But since it is ussually 1 person in a match of 10 people its pretty easy to block it out.

I play alot of PvP across many many games and, I will say that the community in guild wars is actually one of the better ones.

"Matchmaking" sucks - EVIDENCE

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

First off I don’t think that Match making “sucks” I think that is really harsh and probably jsut used to get Evan’s attention. Which worked.

I am posting in this thread because it seems that most of the discussion I have wanted to participate in has happened here.

My main concern is that for Half of the match making season I held my main account in gold, and for this second half of the season, with most likely lowering populations, I have begun tumbling down.

What is my concern here? Well I think the system worked well when the season was highly populated with a wide range of players. However the system begins to snowball downwards when populations thin, and it is comprised of new comers.

My suggestion: Something i have noticed regardless of population shifts is that the timer for matches, the average time in queue has never changed no matter when I play. I have linked this to a swift degradation of the matches I play, now that the amount of players, and veteran players have left this season.

I respectfully request that you consider increasing queue times a bit more as the season winds down. I know the original reason they have been made so quick, is because of the complaints made in past seasons about Queue time. But, there must be some sort of mid-point as those of us , as a larger group of players the average to the slightly above average players, are being pushed into matches so quickly that the system is not providing very many quality matches.

Issues currently with MMR based tier

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

I have noticed the quickening of pace with which matches are made. In effect the average queue time has been sucessfully reduced compared to prior seasons. Now, I think this a great thing except, I fear that in lower divisions of match making, gold and below this may result in more, poorly matched teams. IE, quickly matched but not Well matched. Now, this would not cause a problem during, high peak times in PvP, this would be of no issue when the player pool is vast and wide. IE, more players good matches are wrought.

At the beginning of the season the matches were very good, it seemed the achievement of a balanced match regularly was not so far out of grasp. The strides of doing placement matches were great and I not only did well in my placements but held my general rating for a month at least. Sadly I noticed that as time went on and the newness of the PvP season wore off. The player pool lowers and suddenly there are not as many people for the match making system to select from.

Yet, I still see fast matchmaking queue times and in fact suspect that queue times take precedence over the quality now of the match, more then they did before.

Has this been adjusted? I can not say, I understand the want for fast queue times, I understand the complaints in past seasons over it getting longer as the seasons ended.

I simply must ask, has this been changed this season? As it has become impossible for me to hold my spot where I was in the past week or so, and the change I suspect has to do with the waning population pools in PvP. The broadening of matchmaking searches, happening sooner.

Too many rewards in Ranked PvP

in PvP

Posted by: Nightshade.2570

Nightshade.2570

No I can not agree. I am a long time pvper and ranked pvp is finally getting the rewards it deserves.

I think this whole thing has to be looked at from another angle.

I know the cause of this is new players going into lower tiered ranked pvp and not doing well. Don’t take the rewards away from yourself.

Identify a way to avoid, new players doing poorly. Definitely need some reworks on how matchmaking is working, definitely need to consider that people need more tutorials and more guidance in terms of learning to pvp.

Every season we have people that afk, and do horrible things in ranked pvp, sometimes just for the sheer enjoyment of ruining your match. This isnt a new thing, it is just with a higher population of people it becomes a bit more rampant. Perhaps people who are afk and not moving for more than a minute shouldn’t recieve PvP reward track progress whether the team wins or loses.

A Mentor system put in game would be nice. With vet Players queueing up voluntarily with new players to teach them the core concepts of the game. With a unique title for doing it over time for the Vets ect.

Heres a rough draft of the idea that I wrote on my other thread, “Stop the new player/pve player hate”

What if there was a LFG where people could mentor up, Or a system like that where An experienced player could volunteer to play with a new player. Both parties getting something unique like an achievement title or something like that, maybe a bit of gold. NOTHING HUGE, just to encourage both sides of the fence. The mentor side could only queue up based on a minimum number of games and rating, and the newer players could only queue up for it after they complete a tutorial and have less then X number of games accountwide.
A Mentor LFG would be nice, specifically for parties of two. This could even be a requirement before entering ranked.

I have no problem with new players, as long as they stay in unranked until they learn to actually play. And as far as knowing who is new, when 4 guys are capping home at the start of a round it’s a good guess they’re new. And trying to teach them mid ranked game is more frustrating than it should be. They dont listen.

To some degree I agree with you, I often get frustrated with team mates and I groan inside when I know I have a very new player on my team. However, I understand they want the rewards that come from playing in ranked. I was lucky I had a mentor to teach me pvp, and I have tried to pass that on, I just wish more people would recognize that its not the fault of the new person necessarily as an outcome of the game rewards and matchmaking.

arena net needs to add a mentor feature for pvp it wont hurt anyone and it will make pvp players better.

Thats it Zealex. Far be it from me to not offer up a solution when complaining to Arena Net about their game. I always try to give a constructive criticism and a few good ideas.

In any case, you inspired me Zealex that is the exact thinking.

Yes please, people need to know that when a target is called it’s best for everyone on your team if you target them too. Tue amount of matches I’ve had where a target is called but ignored by half the team so they can try and have a 1vs1 at middle is just not funny anymore, It’s sad and tragic.

Also people need to know that points do not cap faster if 2 people are on them. I had someone tell me that they do. He ran from middle to close to help me re cap and empty point.

Wow well that makes sense now as to why some people stay with me when I am capping a point.

Thoughts from the Bottom

in PvP

Nightshade.2570

As a long time GW player and first time Ranked Season player I wanted to put something up here about what I have seen and think so far about this matchmaking.

1.) Helpful Forum People: Thanks to those on the forum who have been helpful. Those who haven’t trolled and tried to walk me through how this system works. I have been patient and playing my heart out, and as the season continues I am seeing myself climb (albeit slowly) up the ladder and the quality of my matches go up. The evenhanded responses helped to keep me focused on getting better and trudging through the first week of bad matchups.

2.) Bad Sportsmanship from “Good” Players: I’m not ashamed to admit I’m in Bronze 3 right now. Through my fights I have found myself paired up with a lot of Dragon Finishers, many of which have a very negative attitude at their placement and seem determined to ruin things for everyone else trying to work their way up through bronze.

This has, in my opinion, been the worst part about the matchmaking. Having someone stop at 250-300 to type out angry comments to others about how we are all ‘Bads’ and ‘Noobs’ because we didn’t take mid fast enough or let ourselves be 3 capped is demoralizing and, takes away from time we need to be working to make up the point loss. I’ve come back from plenty of times being down because we put the work in and pushed through. I know the matchmaking can’t stop this, but I think by design as we climb the ranks the new players in bronze will constantly be paired with these ‘self saboteurs’.

I would be interested in getting some sort of ‘BAD SPORTSMANSHIP’ report. . .though I don’t know if it would be abused or help at all.

3.) Blaming New People: New people aren’t the problem. . .not saying old people are, but blaming new people who had -no- input in to this matchmaking and are trying to learn their way through the ranks is only discouraging those of us who would like to make this game our PvP home. . .thus making your community smaller, Q’s longer, and experience worse. I’d say if someone is new it might be best to just answer their question instead of flaming at them for being Noob Kitten Bads.

4.) If EVERYTHING is OP, Nothing is: This week I have heard nerfs called for Elementalist, Guardian, Dragon Hunter, Necromancer, Thief, Ranger (Druid), and Engineer. . .So. . .everything but Mez and Rev. . .Pretty sure that means Mez and Rev just need a buff. Like I said, I am new to the league thing, but having been on several different games in PvP I would say the only class that seems to be badly balanced right now is Rev, and a GOOD Rev can be pretty scary.

Will probably have more thoughts later, but thought it would be nice to drop something here not blaming the devs or the game from someone at the bottom.

Dear sir,
Don’t give up. What most of the Vet players who are hating against new players don’t realize is they need you. They need you to keep trying. They need you to not leave after the season is over. I want you to like PvP, I want new players to stay and I don’t blame them! I have started a thread aimed at asking people to help each other and I don’t care how much people come there and complain about new people to me, at the end of the day we all want the same thing.

What many don’t understand is this season we are transitioning, from one system to a new one. What was once, is not now. Alot of people were placed higher in seasons then they should of been and now are actually dealing with seeing that number. It hurts, thankfully I lost that illusion of being a elite player along time ago and recognized that I was unable to commit to the time it takes to become a pro player. I let that go and decided to have fun, PvP in its good moments doesnt need any rewards at the end of it as the thrill of constant battles and match ups is quite addictive. However I am so happy to see it is finally getting the rewards it needs to build a new strong PvP community.

I am happy to help anyone whose new and would be glad to take them into unranked and give them pointers. And please, your not at the bottom, its just a number that will improve over time as you improve.

Thats the big issue here that people don’t get. You can’t spam a mindless number of games to make that number go up. You have to switch classes, change your rotations and win fights. You have to improve your own game play and not be concerned with the behaviour of others. Sometimes match making gives you a raw deal and you need to take that as a learning experience and try your hardest still.

Take care,
Happy Holidays
Aggie
