Question about engineers

I DID TEST IT. Twice i might add. I dropped a bunch of turrets and went to the loo. when i got back i was at the character screen. Second time, i was dead but still in the game.

So… you can’t apparently figure out how to set it up to work? Strange. I already gave an example of two places where this setup does, in fact, work just fine. “Dropped a bunch of turrets then left” doesn’t count. You didn’t watch the game at all to see if it worked, then claim that it’s the idle timer kicking you off?

Setting it up then getting killed also implies that you’re not setting things up properly.

So no, I don’t count either of these as decent tests for the idle timer.

You’ve also left out details. How long were you AFK? If it’s five minutes, then that’s really strange, as I watched my engineer kill bandits for fifteen minutes without any disconnection due to idle timer. Or more accurately, my engineer’s turrets. I set it up and didn’t move the camera or even touch the computer during that time, just to make sure I didn’t interfere with possible idle timing.

How much experience did you gain while AFK? If that number is zero, then clearly your setup wasn’t working.

Do you actually think you are the first to think of something so simple? Have you ever considered that you aren’t the smartest person here? The most stupid thing about you is that you did was not actually test it yourself before you scream “exploit”.

Wow, you sound really angry. Calm down, sparky.

One. I have tested it myself. I could explain how I set it up again, but there’s really no need. It’s right there in that post above yours.

Two, I never claimed to be the first to think of this. In fact the reason I noticed it at all was because I saw the setup done by other people in the game.

Three, I am not “screaming” exploit. I was asking. In fact I didn’t ever call this an exploit, though I’m starting to think that that’s a more accurate term for it rather than botting.

Which also is a response to the later post, I considered this a grey area simply because it seemed to be botting, but using ArenaNet’s own tools. Looking at it as an exploit (even a trivial one since it doesn’t give anything other than experience) is a bit more clear to see.

Solution: Engineer Kit Aesthetics

The engineer’s backpack could respect the setting of the hero window — show the backpack if the back item is not hidden, hide the backpack if it is. Not a perfect solution simply because low level engineers might not have a back item to be able to set the preference, but it should be fairly simple to implement.

Ideally, being able to change the appearance. With normal weapons players can transmute to many many different skins to satisfy their personal taste, but engineers with kits have no choices at all. I’d definitely be in favor of giving some variety options.

What OP is proposing doesn’t work. Most likely the monster be able to kill 1 turret and after that the rest will fall instantly (unless you have 3 or more engineers working in together).

I’ll say it again. And I guess I’ll keep saying it over and over since it’s so hard to read the thread. I’ve watched an engineer setup like this. It works just fine. It’s really not hard in low level areas.

Just to double check, I even took my engineer to Queensdale. I went into Bandithaunt Caverns and dropped a rifle turret and a flame turret. Didn’t need to drop a third. The two turrets alone easily take care of any bandits. Two and three at a time, even.

I will mention that I set up traits for reduced damage to turrets (Adept level, “Metal Plating”) and self repairing turrets (Master level, “Autotool Installation”). So my current setup requires a level 40 or higher engineer.

Most of the time, the bandits attack my engineer directly rather than the turrets. And two or three volleys from the turrets will kill the bandits. My engineer isn’t taking much damage, but I could set auto-cast on the self heal skill I have if I really wanted.

Please test it yourself if you don’t think it’s possible.

The only thing that’s going to prevent this is an idle timer. My engineer has been idle for ten minutes or so, hasn’t been kicked for inactivity yet. And I seriously doubt most people have tested the idle timer with a turret setup to definitively say whether or not the turret activity counts as player activity.

But you know what? Kitten it all. Fuzzy, fluffy, adorable kittens. All over the place. I’m done talking about this. No one gives a kitten about it, so why should I worry about whether or not it’s reportable? Yay kittens.

the bottom line is they are essentially not profiting from it or hurting other players.

Again I ask — where in the definition of botting does it say it needs to be profitable?

This is leveling while AFK. Slowly, but still possible. But it’s using ArenaNet’s own game play, so the question remains.

Also, in regards to not hurting other players, that’s another thing that’s nowhere in the definition of botting. And of course in the Sylvari tutorial my new characters couldn’t unlock any weapon skills before heading to the dragon. Not a huge deal, really, but annoying.

At the farm in Queensdale (the first one, with wurms) the turrets can prevent players from quickly completing the heart — turrets can target the wurms while they’re still underground. Again not a huge deal since you can complete the heart other ways, but you’re actively interfering with another player’s kills by “stealing” them first.

Of course now that we’re in the Engineer forum rather than Account Issues (where I think it’s more appropriate to ask about potentially reportable actions, thanks mods!) I doubt I’ll get a definitive answer.

I’m not naming character names, just the area to show where the turrets can kill the enemies faster than the enemies can damage the turrets. Just in case there’s question of my wording — Fighting the Nightmare is the name of the Sylvari tutorial area, but I can see how it might look like I’m naming a specific character.

I’m curious about your definition of botting, if you wouldn’t call it that. What would you consider a bot? (not trying to be argumentative, honestly curious, but words are not my friends this evening)

There is a pve timer that when you are too long afk, you will be kicked, there is a timer for loot too, if you don’t pickt it up it will disappear. The only thing he can win is xp, nothing more.

Where in the definition of botting does it say it has to be profitable?

Also, it’s a way to level an engineer while AFK. Seems like it’s still botting.

I have run into the PvE idle disconnection myself — went AFK and took longer than I expected before returning. But I’m not sure it would work if the character is in combat frequently, that may be enough to prevent the idle kick.

(edit to add other post)

if the turret can do damage to the enemy, then the enemy should be able to do damage to the turret. If the enemy can damage the turret, the turret will be destroyed; turrets aren’t that durable.

Depends on the level of the character and the area.

If you’d like a specific example, I’ll mention where I’ve seen this multiple times. On my server, there’s a character in the Sylvari tutorial, Fighting the Nightmare. This character plants turrets around the nightmare hounds that appear nearly constantly. The turrets drop the hounds as fast as they spawn, long before the hounds can do any damage to the turrets.

Botting? Not botting? Seems pretty gray area to me.

Nkuvu.2570

An engineer can set up turrets in a lower level area. Then the player goes AFK, and the turrets automatically target and kill anything that comes close.

This is botting, as far as I understand it. You’re nowhere near the computer, and your character is killing things automatically.

However this is entirely within the normal game parameters. You have not introduced a script, or any external sofware, there are no macros. There aren’t even any special skill combinations. You just need an area where the enemies will not be able to kill the turret.

Is this a reportable offense?

You do realise how confusion works right?

Yep. And my level 2 or 3 characters in Queensdale or Metrica Province or wherever don’t have the luxury of condition removal skills. So they get to stand around and get pummeled by the dolls while they can do nothing. Even the dolls’ basic attack hits pretty hard. I’ve had many many deaths from these evil dolls, and helplessly looked at my skills knowing there’s nothing I can do.

Yay fun?

The 200 cogs was from Tixx in Lion’s Arch, just open a chest and poof, cogs.

I already had 500 cogs from running dungeons in other cities, so unless I can get 50 more, these are a complete waste. Can’t do anything with them except sell to vendor for 2 whole silver.

I’m not angry, just really confused. And hoping that maybe I’ll somehow be able to get another 50 cogs somewhere.

Just one other thing to add that I forgot yesterday.

For normal in the world jumping puzzles, I feel that they’re fine as is. Going through and redesigning them to have scaling difficulties would be prohibitively expensive in terms of labor versus reward.

My suggestion for scaled puzzles would only realistically apply to new puzzles and/or holiday jumping puzzles.

In addition to the scaled rewards, I’d also be perfectly content with differing achievements. Maybe tiers to the jumping puzzle achievement. I’d just like some feeling of satisfaction — even if I can’t complete the harder parts, I can at least get the easy stuff (unlike now, where if I fall on the jumping puzzle I get absolutely nothing for my time and frustration).

Nkuvu.2570

The timed jumping puzzles should have a difficulty scale level like the Bell playing one. For us old farts who can do static jumping puzzles it would be nice to have an easy mode where the pads would disappear at a slower rate.

My exact suggestion.

Varied difficulty for the jumping puzzles is a better solution by far than the attempt at a “one size fits all” puzzle.

I’m horrible at jumping puzzles, and it’s looking highly unlikely that I’ll be able to complete the Wintersday puzzle. It’s not a huge loss, but I would like to be able to do it. I’m just not fast enough. On the flip side, I’ve heard plenty of people say it’s too easy.

So make it easier for some, harder for others. Yay, everyone wins.

For this puzzle, the easy version could simply have the same routes but with relaxed timing. Slower health degeneration, slower disappearance of the snowflakes. Hard version could obviously go faster for both.

I would also be perfectly happy to see scaling rewards based on difficulty.

1. When I walk into Divinty’s Reach, there are ambient NPC sounds. For example, a female saying “Nah, uh uh.” This repeats over and over and over and over and over and over for several minutes, no matter where I walk in the city. Note that the exact sound depends on what’s there when I arrive — so the repetitive sound may be different every time. The most recent time, it was a male voice cheering “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!”

2. Gathering tools no longer play the breaking sound when fully used up. They also don’t play the same sound when interrupted.

Unseen Hunter event is really annoying

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Nkuvu.2570

Nkuvu.2570

In the Brisban Wildlands, there’s the “Protect the Wyld Hunt party from the unseen hunter” event. The range of the dialogue is ridiculously large. Even when there’s nothing indicating that there’s a “new event nearby” I still get to hear all of the dialogue. Over and over and over.

The event happens apparently every fifteen minutes or so. Doing hearts in the area, I’ve seen the event go off three times so far.

The party starts out at a size of six, but three are picked off from the water, where the Unseen Hunter is totally immune to any damage (and these are one-shot kills, so zero chance of saving the party members).

The Unseen Hunter is utterly immune to any conditions. Awesome! Thanks, that’ll be easy. My ranger can use… well. Shortbow is pretty much out, as its primary damage is conditions. My other set is axe/warhorn. So auto attack and birds and pet damage. Darn.

Seriously? You think people will be able to complete this?

I realize that it’s a champion, but I couldn’t do enough damage to it to kill it before it killed all three of the Wyld Hunt. Hmm. Nope, not a group event. So really, what is expected here? Unless it’s just “here’s an event that you’ll always fail.”

I also know that some classes will have less of an issue with the condition immunity. But some will have zero chance at completing this, because conditions are a large part of the game everywhere else.

Option to disable overflow warning

Every single time I zone into Lion’s Arch now, I get a modal dialog box telling me that I’m in an overflow server. Modal (for those who don’t know) means that it takes the focus, preventing me from doing anything else. Every. Time.

Yes, I know. I am fully capable of looking on the compass and seeing the “overflow” listed.

And if I’m in Lion’s Arch for just a minute, it doesn’t matter. I don’t care. I may be switching through several alts in a short period of time for crafting (equipping an alt with things my weaponsmith, huntsman, jeweler, and chef make, for instance, all of which are separate characters for me). Each one of them gets a message. I still don’t care.

You could even set a warning on the option. “By disabling this warning, the overflow status will only be shown on the compass and when looking at the WvWvW screen (B by default).” Then never tell me that I’m in an overflow server again until I disable the option. Just let me turn it off. Please.

On topic – I don’t understand why the rares are like that, that’s why I ignored them completely.

I wanted to. But I still had to use globs of ectoplasm to get my jeweler to 400 to even be able to make the exotics. It was annoying.

I currently have five characters that hit level 80 in the last week or so, and getting them all up to par with armor and weapons has been expensive. But they can all at least wear rare level 80 armor and use rare level 80 weapons. Jewelry? Still at rare level 65 because I can’t afford the ectos.

Disappointed (story spoilers through lvl 50)

in Personal Story

Posted by: Nkuvu.2570

Nkuvu.2570

I haven’t really visited this area of the forum before, so this may all be a common complaint. Or not. But I just wanted to throw in some feedback. Warning: Long. With un-hidden spoilers up to about level 50, like I mention in the title.

I’m something of an altoholic. I have eight permanent characters, and a ninth that gets re-rolled to something new when the whim strikes. This ninth slot has also been used to explore various personal stories that I couldn’t fit into the other eight slots.

For the 1-10 personal story quests, I had lots of fun. Five races, three options for each race, and decisions to make in each of those lines. Fifteen different stories, with subtle variations (even if the decisions really don’t make a difference — investigate Minister’s estate or go to the party, you still end up fighting him at the trial).

This continued with the 10-20 story quests. Fifteen options with minor variations.

Then we start with the Orders. From 20-30, the personal story only varies by race. My human characters all had exactly the same options, and they all ended with fighting Kellach to protect Queen Jennah (though which order you choose determines which NPCs help you fight). Five options with minor variations.

It gets worse as we progress. 30-40, we’re down to just which Order we chose. Three different stories, no matter what race.

Then we get to Claw Island, and I’ve only done this twice. But both times, the fight was nearly identical.

Did I mention spoilers? Because… spoilers.

We fight the same fight, talk to the same NPCs, have the same goals. We even let our mentor rush off to die to save us. Not that one person against an army of undead would do anything more than make them pause for three seconds.

For the story of Warmaster Forgal Kernsson, his decision makes sense. Norn are all about the challenge. OK, I don’t like it but I can see the reasoning. Tybalt… I have no idea why he decided to throw his life away for such a futile gesture. It was beyond noble, but pointless. Close the gates, and we’d have just as much time to reach the ships. I simply refuse to sacrifice Sieran as well — so my Priory characters aren’t progressing in personal story any more.

So at this point, all of my characters will have the identical story lines of Trahearne-ness.

Ignoring Trahearne (and his multitude of flaws) entirely, what part of the “personal” story is in any way personal at this point? No matter what race I chose, or what character creation options I used, it’s all the same.

This is about where I’ve stopped with the personal story, because I just can’t find an interest to continue. I know that eventually it’ll come to facing Zhaitan, but until then it’s just Adventures with Trahearne. Or, as I’ve heard from others, it’s more like “Trahearne the Awesome and his trusty sidekick who doesn’t really need to be named.”

Meh.

I was originally hoping that the stories would branch out. All culminating with a fight with Zhaitan, but all getting there in very different ways. I really expected greatness, and the initial stages of the personal story seemed to deliver that. Later on, however, that all dwindled to mediocrity followed by tedium.

Being one of the people who got hacked and losing everything (including tons of gold in mats, a legendary bow [The Dreamer]), and much much more… seeing you type “Incidentally, account restorations are very, very close.” Just made my night… it would be nice to have my hard work back as well as my sense of security. I look forward to these restorations and thank you all at Anet for looking into this issue.

Hope for the best, expect the worst.

The worst in this case being that they won’t be able to do account restorations prior to the implementation of said restoration functionality. Or in other words, they might not be able to restore the things you lost, even if they put in the account restoration tomorrow.

But here’s to hoping that you do, in fact, have the things you lost restored to your account.

Why GW2 does NOT need a LFG system like WoW

in Suggestions

Posted by: Nkuvu.2570

Nkuvu.2570

Don’t they already have a LFG system? Not automated but I saw some people with an icon over them showing they are LFG.

…sort of.

You can set your status as “looking for group” (I believe it’s in the same spot as online/away/etc in your Friends list). But this doesn’t specify anything. You’ve essentially just stated “LFG” in map chat.

You are still restricted to the local map, and the lack of detail makes it hard to tell if anyone is doing what you’re doing. If you’re in Plains of Ashford, for instance, you might be LFG for a champion. Or maybe you’re doing AC — story or explorable? who knows? Or maybe you just want someone to talk to.

It needs far more detail in order to be useful, if you ask me. And more widely spread.

Throwing my two cents onto the pile:

I think the Southsun Cove area is amazing. Gorgeous area, with tons of nooks and crannies that I’d like to explore.

Not entirely thrilled with the inhabitants, however. Even my level 80 characters with rare armor (can’t afford exotics yet) were losing a significant portion of their health with one fight against the young Karka. In many other parts of the game I can easily solo multiple normal enemies, and a veteran is not certain doom. Southsun Cove? More than one normal enemy and it’s likely that I’m going to be downed. I could run with a zerg, but it’s odd that in so many other parts of the game I can do fine solo, then I’m expected to be in a group for this. (disclaimer: haven’t been to Orr yet, though I have played a bit in the Straits of Devastation)

The scavenger hunt could have been interesting. There seemed to be the beginnings of a back story to the karka and their origins and even why they wanted to attack Lion’s Arch. I feel that the story wasn’t well developed, however. Canach visited the land of karka, and took some plant life that made the karka really angry? Angry enough to follow him all the way back to Lion’s Arch? Did I… did I miss something? We’re not even told what the plant was, much less why the karka were so protective of it. Then again, I missed a lot of the dialogue at the beginning of phase 2, simply because I wasn’t at the Lion’s Court for the beginning (because nothing gave me an indication of where in LA to be). So it’s possible I missed more of the back story.

The finale was really long. And difficult. We had multiple instances where 90% of the players were dead. In part from too many ground effects to be able to see the poison on the ground, but mostly due to culling. It’s hard to fight an enemy that you can’t even target (but during the reinforcement stages, the invisible enemies had no problem chaining knockdowns to my character).

I am pleased that there was a chest at the end of the very long fight, and I did pick up my two exotics and two rares and karka items. However I also fully understand the concerns of the people who were not able to attend the event. I expected to see a few karka-themed armor skins. Probably account bound. This might have helped with people getting upset for missing it — though it might also have made people cranky due to insufficient rewards. I don’t suppose there’s any way to alleviate this. Unless, of course, the event was more like a dungeon with multiple possible runs (and allowing people to loot the chest only once per account).

All of this, however, was overshadowed by the bugs.

I’m not going to reiterate all of the bugs that I saw, they’ve been discussed at length on the forums already. But what this could have been was an enjoyable if somewhat disjointed event. What it turned out to be was… rather disappointing.

Captain's Commendations useless after today?

I don’t have too many commendations. I recently brought two characters to level 80, and equipping them with shiny new armor and weapons and such didn’t leave me much left to donate.

However I do have some, and I’d like to know if I should just use up the few that I have now — getting some rather dull rewards — or save them for later.

Will they still be useful after the Lost Shores weekend event?

Southsun Cove...boring

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: Nkuvu.2570

Nkuvu.2570

When the Halloween event was active, I went and farmed with the zerg running around the labyrinth. I’d have to stop after about twenty minutes, though, because of full bags. Given that all of my characters were well below level 80, it was no surprise that I was not getting level 80 drops. Still, bags would be full quickly, and even selling the junk and blue/white weapons made the whole thing profitable.

I’ve been running around Southsun Cove for a while. Both with a zerg group and out on my own. Neither case gave me drops that would even cover waypoint costs. Much less any armor repair from deaths. So farming in Southsun is an expense rather than a source of income. OK, so I guess that’s out.

I tried doing events. There was the initial taking of the island, securing points, building a bridge. Then… nothing? One gathering event for golem parts. One gathering event for Consortium supplies. And occasionally one of the outposts needs to be defended/retaken. And finding these events is difficult because they’re so few and far between. So obviously that’s not profitable.

In short, the way it is now I have little reason to go revisit the area. Exploring on my own is painfully slow — I can’t just plow through the huge quantities of veterans and champions. Even the young karka do a lot of damage (and I saw many many players defeated with only two or three of the “normal” young karka around). I’ll certainly revisit for the final event… but after that I don’t plan to ever return. Even though the scenery is some of the most beautiful I’ve seen in game.

I don’t really see how people could get lost, the tasks were pretty clear and all you had to do was follow the massive zergs.

Following the zergs is fine… if there’s a zerg. If you’re wandering on your own trying to find anything to do, the zerg is just me.

I wandered almost all over the island. The only thing I saw were (as mentioned) one or two gathering events that apparently had no followup. And tons of other players training monsters to me. Fun!

I never saw Inspector Kiel on the island, though the Lost Shores quest did have her listed as someone to protect. I guess I was just never close enough to her. So whatever events might be pretty clear to you were completely invisible to me. I wasn’t anywhere close to anything going on, just random wandering around (punctuated by a fair bit of death due to the aforementioned trains, thanks random players!).

I missed… oh, probably 95% of this. So retelling the story is greatly appreciated.

I was on an overflow server with a trebuchet that took close to an hour to finish. Then we fought some karka with the new alchemical weapons, then ported to Southsun Cove. I missed the dialogue amongst any NPCs utterly.

Participated in part of the event to capture the beach, and the crowd moved off when I stayed behind to help someone that was downed. But we were both slaughtered by the karka. By the time I resurrected and got back to where the event was, it had moved off. I arrived at another waypoint just as the champion was defeated. Then… nothing. No new events that I could see.

So utterly confused as to what’s going on. And disappointed that even being present at the event didn’t help. I was apparently in the wrong part of Lion’s Arch to start, so missed all of the bits that would have this make some sort of sense.

Karka hit stupidly hard

I know they’re supposed to be strong. But this is just… ridiculous. My guardian went from full health to downed in one attack from Karka. Defeated moments later.

So I looked at the combat log, because ow.

http://i.imgur.com/ugpSq.jpg

Note a few things here. I’m downscaled from 63, standing in Kessex Hills. I didn’t even capture all of the damage done, just the two worst sections. Note the time stamps. Note the total amount of health my character has in this area. The top section of the combat log shows 1956 damage alone, more than enough to drop me to downed.

There was no wind up, no warning, no red rings of AoE doom for me to dodge. Just full health, downed, defeated, almost as fast as you can read that out loud.

I’m really hoping this is not working as intended.

I’m very sorry to hear that but honestly, being handicapped means you’re handicapped. This means certain things are either far more difficult or simply impossible. Maybe your brother could ask a blind person how he feels about never even playing a video game? Maybe ask a paraplegic what he thinks of GW2?

I don’t want to sound rude, but in this case there’s not much you can do.

And yet… there is something that ArenaNet can do to fix this issue. Just like a number of other games that have already addressed this.

As I’ve mentioned before, I think that changing the color of the AoE rings alone is not a good approach due to the variety of color blindness. I would hope to see configurable color items, allowing each user to choose a color for enemy AoE and friendly AoE and so on. Differing patterns for the rings would also be beneficial, though that doesn’t help if you can’t see the rings in the first place.

This doesn’t break the game for the people with perfect color vision, but it sure would improve it a lot for those of us that have problems with some colors.

Well I think the karka fight at the beginning could have been interesting.

I had a karka trying to chew off my face for an extended period of time, and my weapons were doing little damage. As in, single digit damage. It seemed to be a good introduction to the enemy — namely the whole “you’re not really strong enough for this” kind of thing, and we’d have to learn to work with new materials and learn new resistances. That sounds interesting, like what happened with Mursaat and Spectral Agony (a correlation that’s been brought up before in other places).

I thought the scavenger hunt was well communicated. I had NPCs to talk to to get started, and mail to direct me to those NPCs. I did have to search a lot of the wreckage on the beach (and I continued after finding the bag, but later crates told me I’d need something to pry them open… ignoring the crowbar I had in hand and had used already).

I’m not really interested in running dungeons, so Fractals don’t excite me — and then I heard about all the bugs with disconnects, and I’ll just pass, thanks.

If we ignore all the bugs, this could be quite the interesting event. However, given the sheer number of bugs that hinder progress (and all the annoyances like constant mail from Miyani and the never-silent Blingg shouting to the Citizens!), the whole thing makes me pretty glad it’s going to be short.

Continually getting letters from Miyani

Every time I zone. Bing! New mail from Miyani!

Can I report an NPC for spamming?

I was thinking that maybe if I complete the quest scavenger hunt thingy, I’d stop getting mail. But I can’t since it’s bugged (on Tarnished Coast and every overflow I’ve been on) so every zone… bing!

Tracking Noll: DISCOVERED

Couldn’t find him on one overflow. Logged out, and apparently logged into another overflow and poof, there he was.

Not that it matters, the NPC for the next step is currently bugged (you’re supposed to fight him but he’s friendly), so the trail ends cold there. Yay bugs.

Short version — wouldn’t worry too much about finding Noll.

Blingg! Stop shouting!

Actually Blingg makes the game feel less alive to me. He shouts so loud and so often (often interrupting himself), that it’s obvious that it’s just an NPC. Vastly different to the other NPCs with their own dialogues.

Now, when I’m in the area of Fort Mariner, I simply turn off my speakers entirely. He’s too much of an annoying kitty. I mean, kitten.

It seems that the ambient (a.k.a. environment) sound in Lion’s Arch is still stuck on Halloween. I keep hearing thunder, even with clear skies. I hear something that sounds like a person dying, or maybe it’s a cat yowling or something, I’m not sure.

I would say that maybe it’s just me, but a guild member also mentioned hearing thunder in LA.

all can provide some utilty you may need at some point, so you be carrying a lot more weapons on you too…

Maybe. But that’s not how I personally play the game. I choose two weapon sets for my warrior or thief or necromancer (or whatever) and then don’t carry spares. It’s not like weapons break. I have never run into an issue where I was sad that I didn’t have a particular weapon.

…Are you not able to equip or unequip your weapons?!

My elementalist switches from staff to scepter/focus occasionally, so I can see the appeal of the suggestion.

And sure, I can simply equip the alternate set from inventory. But it’s a little annoying to find the item in inventory first, and make sure that if I switch to staff, the focus doesn’t get tossed into my other drops. I’ve even sold my focus to a vendor once or twice simply because I wasn’t careful enough (thankfully I noticed and was able to simply buy it back). Not to mention that other characters with weapon swaps don’t have to use inventory space at all for their swap sets.

Provided that the swap was done entirely out of combat, I can’t see a down side to this.

Automatic botting check

Nkuvu.2570

Potential for abuse is too high.

Maybe the player is AFK. Someone comes along and reports them for botting, just to be “amusing.” Blocked and prevented from logging in.

Maybe the player is in combat — I know that many champion fights last a lot longer than a minute, and I definitely don’t want to stop fighting to solve some stupid CAPTCHA.

Not to mention that you could easily coordinate a few people to spam reports on one player, so that player is stuck solving these side things — interrupting whatever it is that they were doing.

Any time you give players a way to automatically block other players from playing, there’s guaranteed to be someone willing to abuse that just to mess with someone else.

Also — if you have to go AFK, but you’re not sure if there are events or patrolling enemies and you don’t want to log out, take a quick trip to the Heart of the Mists. When you get back to the game, simply leave the mists and you’ll be right back where you were.

I’d also like to see turrets with different appearance based on race.

We even have the models in game already for some of this. Sylvari and asura have turrets in game (though for asura they’re all NPC turrets). The existing turrets work well for Charr, so add something more spiritual for norn and maybe something more Krytan for human, and whee.

It takes a lot more than a moment to lose all of your gear. You have to die, which means that you’re not paying attention for however long that takes. Then someone resurrects you, which takes a relatively long time. Then you’d have to do this over and over and over and over and over and… over before any gear even starts to break.

Maybe you should choose better places to go AFK. Because aside from that small scenario, I can’t imagine any time you’d rather be dead than alive.

Stop Camera Movement After Death

Nkuvu.2570

What I’d like to see:

If the character dies, the camera starts to move on its own after a few seconds.

If the player takes control of the camera, that spin stops. Entirely. Player can readjust the camera once and then not touch it again, and the camera will not try to restart the spinning randomness.

That’s it. I don’t see a need for a game option here. If the player doesn’t mind the spinning camera, they can do nothing once their character is defeated. If the player doesn’t like the spinning camera, they can readjust it quickly and turn it off (until the next time they’re defeated, but that’s nowhere near as annoying as current implementation).

Why are Mad Memories Books soulbound?

No thank you.

You missed the event? You missed the item. Sorry.

Your character was too low level? Um. I helped a level 4 character in Fort Cadence get her last page. I didn’t know her at all, but she asked for help and I was willing to give it. I had a few people help my low level characters get their pages as well. The zones were well populated with people, and not lacking in people willing to help.

I do agree that several things should be account bound rather than soulbound (for instance, gathering tools). But armor pieces are not something that needs to change.

What are trophys for?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Nkuvu.2570

Nkuvu.2570

There are three kinds of drops that are labeled “trophy.”

One is gray quality, and that’s vendor trash. Sell it to the vendor and don’t worry about it. Things like mangled claws and such.

One is an event item. For instance, during an event where you need to pick up things (from a given area or as drops from a monster). Once the event is over, these can be safely destroyed if you didn’t turn them in.

One is a salvage item. These will list “salvage item” on the tool tip, and you can use a salvage kit to get basic crafting materials — useful for crafting or simply for selling on the trading post.

Just the word “trophy” isn’t enough to determine whether you should trash it or not. The salvage items are useful (and can even be sold directly on the trading post if you don’t feel like salvaging them). The gray items and event items are not useful and can be sold or destroyed.

Never do a "one time only" event again.

I’d rather an MMO have fun, special events that offer unique experiences and have to miss them than an MMO not offer them at all. Not being repeatable is what makes these types of events special in the first place. If more people would just allow themselves to get over their feelings of exclusion and abandon that psychological notion that they HAVE to see all the content that the game has to offer, they just might find themselves having more fun with MMOs and not getting so worked up over them.

My thoughts exactly. I love one time events. Even if I miss them.

Downscaled items -- show me effective level

Take a level 50 character. Put that character into a low level area, say Metrica Province. Character level is downscaled. Neat. I can see my effective level on the XP bar as well as the hero pane.

Items and armor and attributes are also downscaled. But I have no idea by how much.

Is my character’s armor sufficient for the area? Is it down scaled too much? I dunno. Is my weapon as strong as the mightiest magical Thingum of Doom, or is it closer to smacking my foes with a stick of warm butter? No clue.

I suggest that the hero window also show the down scaled values for items and attributes. The calculations are already being done in game (clearly, for actual game play — the game needs to know how strong my character’s armor and weapons are). Just make it obvious to the player.

"Bad Blood" quest

Stability helps a lot for this.

I did the quest earlier today, in fact, on my elementalist. Tried to time it, tried to watch torches, and in the end “cheated” and used stability to ignore the effects of the wind.

Of course that’s not a solution for everyone. Some professions have a harder time with stability than others — my elementalist used Armor of Earth, a simple utility skill. If it had been my necromancer, only Lich Form or Plague grant stability (and given that this quest is rated level 33, it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine that my necromancer might not have either of those yet).

I’ve read that if you have problems with the later parts of the puzzle, Sieran will offer to teleport you up. Personally, I’d suggest that this option be given to the windy bridge as well. Let players try it, and if they can complete it, great. If they can’t, it shouldn’t be a source of frustration.

Edit to add: I was talking to a friend, and she mentioned that when she fell off during this quest she was teleported up to Sieran, past the bridge. When I fell, I was downed and teleported back outside the cave, where you initially start. Maybe it’s a number of tries thing, or maybe it’s a distance thing. But it’s odd that we had different experiences with it.

Whilst helping my friend with his main Quest I came along a Sylvari firstborn named “Niamh” Anyone who has played through the Sylvari quest with her will know she has a ridiculously amazing hairstyle.

Niamh is actually wearing the tier 3 cultural armor helm (heavy). So we can’t actually see her hair at all, just the helm. If your Sylvari is a heavy armor wearer, you too can have this appearance.

OP……you can unlock all of your weapon skills in the first couple of levels if you can get the weapons. After that, nothing really changes from that core aspect.

I very much disagree with this. Utility skills and elites and traits change the game significantly — not to mention new enemies who have new skills and their own challenges.

For example, I played my engineer to level 60 with turrets. I’ve recently switched some trait points around and chose some different utility skills (elixirs, mostly), and poof. It feels like an entirely new class. Even though my engineer was and still is using a pistol and shield.

To the OP — several suggestions on server already. But often times, even on my server (Tarnished Coast), I’ll see a silent map chat. Then one person starts talking, and several others join in. I helped with a group event earlier this evening where things were really quiet… then one person said hi, a few more chimed in, and someone else called for help with the group event, and pretty soon we had an army rolling through ogres having a grand time.

Don’t be afraid to speak up in map chat first. Say hi, ask any questions you might have, and see if people respond. You may also want to look into guilds, I had a whole bunch of fun in GW1 simply due to the guilds and alliance I was in and the people there.

If you’re looking for basic information on crafting, I highly recommend the series of videos on YouTube from a user named Enigmius1. He has a series of crafting videos that go over the basics of how things work, and it’s enough to get you running rather quickly.

Searching provides erroneous results

I went to the Lore section, wanting to know a bit more about the lore behind resurrection in the game. So I typed in “resurrection” in the search box, and I got six results.

None of the six results are actually in the Lore forum. Three from the Game Bugs, two from Tech Support, and one from Account Issues. None of the six results had anything to do with resurrection — the threads don’t mention the word at all (well, five of the six threads, one thread titled “Crashing” is 13 pages long and I’m not going to search each of those).

Want to know where it really gets weird? Search for “Charr” in the Lore forum, and most of the 21 results listed are in the Lore forum and actually have the word Charr in them. Some of the results are from other areas (WvW, Mesmer, Game Bugs, etc) and those others have no instance of the word Charr that I see.

I’m rather confused, but I think it’s clear that the search function is not working as it should.
