My argument against mounts three years ago was that NPCs didn’t use them. That’s still largely true, but not true enough that I would continue to use that as a reason going forward.
I’m mostly against mounts because I think they are both boring and distracting, but then I suppose a lot of skins and colors in this game are similarly boring or distracting.
tl;dr I really can’t think of any reason that mounts should not be in the game. (Still, I don’t really see them as improving anything either.)
Those Mordrem are not using mounts, they are using them as handicapped devices; it’s another fine example that shows that Mordremoth is the dragon of the mind because it’s so thoughtful.
Please keep in mind probably 95% of the plant life in this game does not have legs, those Mordrem probably were not created with workable legs so they need those mounts because of their disability; what’s next are you going to start throwing handicapped people out of their wheel chairs because you don’t get to have a mount?

To start out I would like to say I feel the exact same way, you just expressed your self in a much healthier way than I did.
My personal recommendation is to grab some toughness armor, my Necro/Reaper is running a mix of Cavalier/Berserker with Trooper Runes for the additional toughness and the Shout cleanse.
Perhaps you should mention what class you’re starting out with so some one can offer you build advice or point you toward a guide.
I’m glad some one is actually helping you, my thread devolved into a fist fight.
From my experience most of the negativity I’ve seen has been directed my way for finding the open world to difficult, ah well guess the hardcores get everything now; I’m investing in other game companies now.
I couldn’t agree more with your original post OP, I’m barely functioning with a tanky build stacked with toughness on a Reaper.
Hell my skill cap is pretty low but I’ve managed to survive these things, I make them kill priority number one, as soon as I see that line I hit dodge, circle back and focus on them exclusively.
You would think that spend 2 to 3 hours killing that thing would atleast be worth one full bar of mastery. You spend the entire time killing mobs with little down time. You kill countless Champs and legendaries, and you might get half a bar. That’s with finishing the map and killing the dragon. When the map fails you get nothing.
The mobs should give more xp.
That’s pretty Draconian, they should at least reward you for time spent; if you gyp people out of anything after working for 2 hours you’re just going to encourage them to spend their time else where ( but then they’ve already got your $50 so what does it matter).
Trust me Ithilwen if he’s a pro he proves that there are definitely not nice ones which I choose not to elaborate on.
You get the mastery points then you need grind out millions of xp to use them to unlock features you payed for when you bought the expansion. Anet take us for fools and next expansion we might get to unlock the ability to use mounts for 100million xp. plus the cost of the expansion.
But who doesn’t like a little bump and grind?
I get it now, thank you.
So in other words once I learn updraft I can spend the rest of them to max the rest of the masteries in that line?
They probably assumed no one would ever actually get 100% on it, all joking aside that’s impressive.
I understand that you gain Masteries by filling your XP bar, but I’ve found these Mastery Point spots on the map that you commune with and accrue points; what do these points do because they sure don’t increase my XP bar or grant me Masteries?
Bet you were expecting a flaming post of rage.
I have to admit I was overwhelmed at first and that Legendary Night Wyrven is a nightmare but it’s giving me something to step up to.
I may never be able to raid but with the content density and new Open World bosses just a quarter of the way into Verdant Brink I won’t be missing it. In the length of time it would take me to map an original map I’m trudging my way through event chains feeling like I’m in a kitten war zone. Hell I didn’t even notice my xp bar filling up I was so sucked in.
Well played ANet well played.
Edit: I guess I should have complained about something to get a response lol, well despite all of the positives the Elite Spec situation is awful, thankfully Reaper is playable with out much unlocked.

Enjoy the video folks let’s get hyped!!!
Any surprise BLTP items for the launch? I figure the launch day might be a good time to launch some new cosmetic items since I’m pretty sure you’re going to be seeing more traffic than you’ve seen since 2012. Hoping there will be something new I can buy for my Reaper.
I hate PVP, I’m a PVE Care Bear through and through.
Do you think the servers will fill up quick?

I’m not too worried, I have to work any way until the morning on Friday so hopefully I’ll miss most of the drama in person; though I will be packing popcorn to eat at work to eat while reading the forums.
Hell I was originally going to have a vacation start tomorrow night, but I figured release would be a disaster and they were offering me OT and incentive pay to come in.
I’ve got 140 left so I should be close to ok.
Thanks for the game plan
If we’re talking about an unnecessary grind how about people like me that meticulously did world completion to level a class that felt awkward only to look forward to more grind to unlock the elite spec you were shooting for because you will only have half of the class you want to play made available; I didn’t want to play half a Reaper this Friday I wanted to play as a full Reaper.
As I was looking forward to playing a Reaper this Friday and finding out I will only have a partial unlock, will half a Reaper even be playable? With that said are there any builds that will leave me tanky enough to sleep walk through enough Hero Challenges so that I can play the expansion how I actually want to play it, as a Reaper?
1 more day until you get a partial unlock since you won’t have access to enough Hero Points from World Completion to unlock it.

We’re getting off point here the discussion is about hero points unlocking the Elite specialization and how we won’t get access to it until at least half way through the maps, partial unlocks do not count as in my opinion half of an Reaper is like playing half a class.

I’m with you on this, I went full speed ahead leveling a Necro with the purpose of playing a Reaper on Friday; I even made sure I only unlocked 3 specialization trees so that I wouldn’t waste any on the two I would never use. It’s all good I’ll just play my old main my Guardian since I have zero intention of playing as a Dragon Hunter anyway. I’ve got 2 other characters in their 60s atm with roughly 10 tomes saved up, how well do Engineer and Warrior perform with out their elites; at least my Flamethower Farming build actually appeals to me unlike the dagger warhorn build I couldn’t stand as a Necro (just to get to the build I actually was interested in), I had zero interest in Berserker as well so is the GS Warrior Phalanx build still competitive?
Refer to my post above yours.
No actually it’s not ok, there should at least be a story version like all of the 5 mans had.
Apparently my opinion isn’t popular, oh well, hasn’t changed my mind any; thanks for all the free bumps though at least you’re all good for that if nothing else.
The funny thing is all these toxic responses just make the community look bad so great job, you’ve made this look like a post on a WoW forum.
To the handful that have posted and get what I’m saying I appreciate the input over the back ground white noise providing the free bumps, even if you guys don’t see eye to eye at least you have the decency to talk to me with respect.
So then I guess raids are PUGable with a mix of Exotic/Ascended gear, if so then I am misinformed.
3 years of base game set the precedent.
Hahahahaha. Okay.
Necros, you guys will always suck in PvE – 3 years of base game set the precedent.
You’ve made a good point.
3 years of base game set the precedent.
I think you’re missing the point, the open world was supposed to be for casuals, Meta Heads had their own fiefdom in the instanced areas and now they are taking away from the open world.
The open world was supposed to be for casuals? You got a source for that, or is it something you just decided and then declared it to be true? By the way. Guild Wars 1 had some of their PvP maps right on the open world. No one complained about it taking up casual’s space.
GW1 and GW2 are separate games.
I think you’re missing the point, the open world was supposed to be for casuals, Meta Heads had their own fiefdom in the instanced areas and now they are taking away from the open world.
So let me get this straight, ANet is taking away potential Open World Content by sectioning off World Map sections into raids which are blocked off by a high skill ceiling; I see something seriously wrong with this.
I wasn’t happy to begin with that there might be people prohibited from Raiding because of a Gear Check when Colin clearly stated in the Raid intro presentation that there would be no barrier for entry. So now we’re not only supposed to invest half a thousand plus gold into crafting ascended armor to raid, we’re also time gated behind the crafting cd’s, and now after months of crafting we can only access cordoned off World Map chunks if we’re part of an organized raiding team regardless of any real life circumstances that would prevent us from joining a raiding guild.
Hey ANet, I started playing GW2 years ago because I work nights, and I never have a set schedule, at least in your original game I had the whole open world to enjoy massive events in Orr, Maguma Wastes, World Bosses; but now apparently chunks of the actual open world are going to be exclusive to people that have less life restrictions.
This seems to be confirmed in a Wooden Potatoes video.
PS Can I get a partial refund since it looks like you’re cutting me off of at least 20% of what should be open world, since apparently it stares you right in the face when you hit M for Map?
PSS No one’s remotely bothered by this?
(edited by Oldirtbeard.9834)
What’s wrong with individual skill being a barrier to not even 1% of the content available in the game?
Is the other 99% being free-for-all and easy to see not good enough?
I’m sure eventually people will sell raid slots as well, or is buying a slot to see the content not good enough either?
People “throw around the word entitled” because that’s what is happening here. Because you play the game, you think all the story content in the game that you want to see should be available to you. Even if the only barrier to seeing the content is literally yourself and your own play (or wallet), you think the content needs to be brought down to your current level because it’s not fair to you.
Doesn’t matter that you will be able to youtube the entire encounter whenever you want. That doesn’t count because your character wasn’t physically there.
Doesn’t mean that you can simply learn to do the content yourself. That doesn’t count because then you have to play the game.
That’s the definition of entitlement.
Making a story mode version is not FREE. This is the part that you are glossing over. It costs development time, it introduces new hurdles with reward structure, and it dilutes the point of raids – which are supposed to be content for endgame players.
You simply aren’t presenting a benefit that is worth the cost that comes with it. The only argument you are presenting right now is “I don’t want to use YouTube” and frankly, I don’t agree with that being worth all the associated headache. Feel free to clarify this benefit if you want. I just don’t see it.
As it should, at least Rift offers Chronicles, and Instant Adventure versions of raids for the filthy unwashed masses that you apparently sneer at. They also happen to have a much smaller budget as well.
(edited by Oldirtbeard.9834)
Well I’m out, Colin straight up lied to us regarding benchmarks having to be met in order to raid, ascended gear was supposed to be optional, only providing us with an expensive slowly gated way to acquire ascended gear, and still leaving enough of a disparity between respective classes DPS that there will be a Meta group that excludes others.
I will give ANet one week to reconsider before I out in a request for a refund, money talks every one remember that.
One can only hope they bring back the Chainsaw Greatsword, it’s criminal that thing costs as much as a legendary; I wouldn’t be surprised if no ones bought one of those things at that price in years.
It’s great that ANet added Healers but some of us enjoy tanking, perhaps we could turn Reaper, Scrapper, and Herald into some hard control/tank role.
I am planning on taking/heal/ support with my Herald.
Waiting on the BWE 3 to test it out but either going full settler with mace/shield and counting on condi for my damage or Knight/Cleric with sword and shield for physical damage.
Never planned to go dps with that.
What would you recommend for tanking on the Rev, I tried a Herald/Jalis build for an hour on the last beta and got steam rolled a couple times in Verdant Brink as opposed to my Reaper which felt a lot more durable?
I can think of two girls with one cup that enjoy the flavor that Dragon Hunter provides just fine.
If you consider a few days outdated.
Even Obal thinks Dragon Hunter sucks, thus is what he posted after I asked him how he thought DH would fit into the Guardian Meta.
" I ran some calcs and it’s way too situational. They made the two damage multipliers work so that you can’t get both. You need to not use F1 to get one and spam F1 to get the other. For it to outdamage the current builds you need another person in your group to maintain cripple for most of the fight as well as take the damage trap (I used bane sig for both calcs as well). The only thing I think currently that will reliably give cripple is warrior using bladetrail, but it’s not a priority to use it especially off the start in their rotation. The bow was slightly also slightly worse dps over mace/torch.
The utility of it is bad. All virtues have cast times. Virtue of resolve is a leap which makes it annoying and a dps loss. Virtue of courage is not instant so it can screw you as you do block rotations and get the aegis too late. It also doesn’t do much or anything when people are stacking in melee since the block is too far away. It could be useful for raids though but you would have to stand back a bit and range stuff.
I’d drop radiance to take it. If you drop Virtues then Retribution wouldn’t be worthwhile and Radiant Fire would take a hit without Supreme Justice. You would also want your spear to recharge as quick as possible for bosses. This would make you lose blind spam for trash as a tradeoff.
Dragonhunter just isn’t looking worthwhile for the most part given how situation the dps is the way it’s set up, it’s clunky, the utility, and virtue activation times. Mesmer will be better in HoT and revenant is really good. Guardian remains basically the same so it will fall behind them for some content like dungeons by quite a bit. They are still great for fractals and probably will be for raids so they will still have a place. "
roll necro youll be fine
What he said, I’m leveling a Necro right now with plans to go Soldiers or Knights with my Reaper to give my self an old fashioned Death Knight.
I can tell you I always built my PVE character to be as tanky as possible, full Soldiers armor with Zerker Trinks/Weps on my old main my Hammer Guardian, I just lied when joiing 5 man groups (no one seemed to notice).
This expansion I’m going the same path with my Reaper.
Now that we've seen (part of) Mordremoth...

If it’s just his Avatar then they can turn him into zone wide boss like Triple Worm where a few times a day you have to stop him from full manifesting before killing him for good either at the end of the PS or LS3.
“Tanking” in some way or form has been a thing since release too, just see bunkers in PVP. The reasons tanky specs aren’t used in PVE is because there is no need to hold points /defend an area until help arrives, which is the point of a bunker. Maybe in the raids some players will need to guard a specific area and hold enemies for a while, until the rest of the team can do something else.
But “tanking” as in stand in front, grab threat, and take all hits while the mobs avoid your friends, will never be a thing in this game, and for good reasons. That’s the dullest gameplay mechanic ever created for MMORPGs
As you can see by the fact that I created this post that there are those of us that do not find Tanking to be boring at all.
It’s great that ANet added Healers but some of us enjoy tanking, perhaps we could turn Reaper, Scrapper, and Herald into some hard control/tank role.
Has Death and Taxes offered any input for Revs? Recently while poking around in Obals PVE Guardian guide I asked him what his thoughts were on Dragon Hunter; he said basically it will be suboptimal compared to as Herald or Chronomancer; since I have zero interest in a Chronomancer I’m here to get schooled on Revs. The last time I pooed around on a Rev I had been trying to keep my Herald Facets on passive then swapping to Dwarf to spam Hammers after the Heralds energy depleted. I found my self to be squishy so I was wondering if the Celestial Gear they hand you is Junk compared to a better stat set; or was I just doing it wrong with my utilities as a Herald.
Bummer guess I’ll have to roll a Rev
