New Lazarus Theory! (SPOILERS)

in Living World

Palador.2170

Ok but why is it not a hostile creature? I’m invulnerable to damage…. so why make the creature non-hostile? It could attack me and I’m just invulnerable… but that isn’t what happens.
The dismissal of my argument seems to focus on the fact that A-Net wouldn’t make a thing like that hostile if your skill bar is locked… but if you are invulnerable than does that matter?

To make it attack you, it would have to be a faction other than “Player team” or “enemy team” (for lack of the proper names). And if they did make a “Kill everyone” team, there might be problems that would require debugging.

Instead, they made it simply “enemy team”, and let it attack you when it sees you properly. When I did the story, I didn’t see it until AFTER I turned on the machine and my costume dropped. I think that’s how it’s supposed to work, and seeing it before is a minor bug. It’s supposed to draw your attention to the crack in the floor, and the scratch marks.

[Spoiler] Marjory

in Living World

Palador.2170

There’s something else to remember, too. As the wiki states:

Marjory got her start in the Ministry Guard of Divinity’s Reach, but left after witnessing Ministry Guard Henrick Baker murder a young boy for threatening to unravel a conspiracy surrounding a Minister who captured and tortured a woman with dark magic. The boy’s ghost entrusted his weapons to Marjory, but unfortunately the ghost was dispersed by Kraig the Bleak before Marjory could interrogate it properly. With the help of a mysterious benefactor known only as “E”, Marjory then decided to leave the Ministry and become a private investigator. The case of the ghost boy remains unsolved to this day.

It’s been no secret that Marjory has issues with the Ministry Guard and some of the Ministers. Having Caudecus step out and admit to being the head of the White Mantle must have made him a target for her. Then Lazarus shows up, takes away a large chunk of Caudecus’s support, and offers to join you?

Caudecus WILL show up again, he needs to draw the White Mantle away from Lazarus if he’s ever going to gain the throne. Marjory’s waiting for him with a very large, very sharp blade. And if he’s lucky, she’ll be happy with just killing him.

After what she’s seen, and what we’ve learned in Bloodstone Fen? I don’t think he’s going to be lucky.

As they have worked hard on both of those areas, and have no interest in abandoning WvW, I don’t think ANet is going to do this.

As I understand it (and I may be wrong), once the server decides to close a map, it’s going to close in 1 hour. It’s not supposed to automatically move people to that map any more, but if some taxi in, they don’t see the warning.

It sounds like the map was already marked for closure when the groups started to form and getting people onto the map. All the new additions to the map don’t get to see the warning or timer. So, when time was up, all of them were taken by surprise.

I think fist type weapons would work well for several of the professions, we don’t really need a whole new class for it.

In the mean time, have you checked out the Daredevil elite spec for thieves? The new weapon is a staff, but they also gain a few bare hands attacks in their utility skills. Not enough to fight that way constantly, but it allows you to throw in an occasional weaponless attack.

[spoiler]The Commander of the Pact is...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Palador.2170

Caithe has terrible judgement, let’s be clear on that. In the sylvari personal story, she’ll kill people just because they’re with the Nightmare Court, and tells someone to give up on the love of his life once she’s joined the Court because there’s no way to bring her back. And yet, when the person SHE cares about is involved, suddenly that’s different?

In LS Season 2, she keeps the secret of the sylvari’s true nature hidden from you and Trahearne, even though she knows he’s about to lead the Pact into the dragon’s area. We all know how that turned out. I should also point out that at this point in the story only two sylvari had heard the call, Scarlet (who tore down her protections), and one of the Soundless that got too close to that area. At this point, Caithe’s thoughts were still very much her own.

They were also her own when she stole the egg from us. Any later claims that she did this because the dragon was messing with her head are complete BS, she did it entirely on her own terrible judgement.

Did the Call of Mordremoth mess with her head? Yes, I’m sure it did, once it started. But by that point we were already headed down a bad path thanks to her choices. But the Call is ended by the time we move into LS3, right?

Well…. no. Primodus has gained some of the powers of the destroyed dragons. There is no guarantee that he can’t influence a sylvari just like Mordremoth did. Maybe he can’t call to all of them in the area, but it’s entirely reasonable to think he may be able to pull on one specific one, one at an important location.

With all this in mind, WHY would we leave Caithe to watch over the hatchling? Seems like a really bad choice, right? Well… we didn’t do that. Remember, Taimi IS watching the egg chamber remotely, and she’s sure to have noticed something was happening and been watching during the fight and the events after it. So our little “joke” about wanting someone we trust to watch over the chamber, and asking for Taimi to do it wasn’t a joke. It was us telling her to watch over the hatchling and Caithe. Caithe doesn’t know, so she’ll stay there where Taimi can keep an eye on her. Caithe can prove that we can trust her now if she tries, but we’re watching her until she does.

As for Lazarus? Yes, his kind did betray the other races long ago, but he does make some very valid points. Also, he’s one person, not his entire race. It’s easier for one person to change than for many. His long sleep/death and recovery may very well have given him a new perspective into things, and seeing two of the Elder Dragons destroyed may have given him hope that doing things honestly will actually work. If nothing else, he wants to survive, so we can trust him at least that far. Our automatic rejection of his offer is very out of place, especially considering how much of the story up to that point (PS as well as LS) has had to do with finding redemption and forgiveness. We don’t have to trust him entirely, but Marjory was the only one being sensible there. She’s taking a big risk, in hopes of a big payoff in a game where we already know we won’t win without risks and losses.

People do know that you can click on interactable objects to give them interact priority right? I have never once been blocked from interacting with something. You can always click on the object and then interact with it.

1. Some things, like Vistas, can’t be clicked on to give them priority.

2. Other things are difficult to click on, such as the bank vendors in Divinity’s Reach, who are behind a barrier.

3. If it’s something you need to use quickly, such as a bundle/environmental weapon in an event, you may not have the time to keep trying to find a point where you target it and not the player items.

This is a non-issue by people who aren’t aware of all ingame options.

I think it is you that lacks awareness of the issue, not the other players. But it only really becomes a big issue in very limited situations, so it’s quite likely you’ve never encountered them. If so, I envy your luck.

I think these instances are pretty rare, for I play the game for hours every night, and a lot on the weekends, and I can’t remember this happening more than once or twice. I also happen to believe that many if not most are accidental, and not a form of griefing.

It’s not a problem for you, so you don’t think it’s a problem for anyone else? And if we want someone to address it, we need to grief you and anyone else with an ANet tag until someone gets angry? That’s pretty much what I’m getting from this.

Now, I do agree that people shouldn’t be banned for it or anything. After all, it can and does happen on accident at times. But even when it’s an accident, it’s annoying. Can’t we get spawned items/NPCs lowered on the interact priority list so that by default you’ll interact with whatever’s normally there first? You can target a NPC merchant or Box o Fun to select it, but it’s hard to target a vista.

[Edit] NOTE: I do not support or suggest that anyone grief the devs.

Caithe is NOT a child, though. There’s a good chance she’s older than everyone else we went into the jungle with (save Rytlock, who we met inside). And we know that if the PC is a sylvari, then she’s a couple decades older than them.

I would also remind you that she didn’t need to spend the first part of her life learning how to walk and talk, only to lose those memories into the mists of time and age. She may not have been born experienced, but she was at least on par with a 5 year old human from day one.

Her physical age is no excuse for her mental age.

Waypoints, lore and roleplay

in Lore

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

Hey everyone,

a lot of roleplayers have a problem with waypoints.

Okay, I’ll take a shot at this. Please note, these answers are how I see things, they are not canon.

  • why can’t you just travel from one end of Tyria to the other one then?*

You can, IF you’ve attuned to the waypoints you wish to use. In (nearly) all of the game, you have to reach a waypoint the old fashioned way first, and it becomes attuned to you, or you to it. Then, and only then, can you use that waypoint.

  • how much mass can you transport via the waypoint system?*

Remember the movie “Terminator”, and how the time machine could only transport living materials, or things contained in a living material? Well, consider the waypoints to be attuned to a person’s aura. Only things within that aura will go with them. Now, some things, such as a ranger’s companions, have hopefully been around them long enough that the aura has bled over a bit. But a random pack animal, or a couple crates of gear? No aura, and too big to fit into the character’s aura. So, they get left behind.

  • why using gates at all, when you could transport a bigger mass through them, if techncially possible?*

First, you can take gates to new areas, unlike waypoints. Second, gates don’t need to be activated by the traveler in any way. You walk through a basic gate, you get teleported. Walk by a waypoint, and … you just walk past it.

Finally, I get the impression that gates take power to keep open. And the bigger they are, the harder it is to make them stay open for very long. The ones the asura use are at the balance of power/useful size.

  • Asura gates function like a wormhole I would say. But how do waypoints work? Like a transporter in Star Trek, where you’re disassembled into your atoms and the transfered through the leyline to another waypoint and there you are reassembled?*

I think the waypoints work best if you assume that, for a moment, they make Point A and Point B so similar, that it doesn’t matter which one you’re at. You start at Point A, it becomes just like Point B, and then suddenly you’re at Point B.

This is also how I think Mesmer portals work, for what that’s worth.

  • when the Asura only by accident mapped the ley lines of Tyria by placing the waypoints, how did they know at all about this kind of transportation? When living underground they, as far as I know, only had the gate system.*

Let’s say that the asura build 6 labs, and 3 of them are on ley lines. They use the labs to do high energy magitech research and experiments.

Now, 3 of those labs are at an advantage that they don’t really know about. So, they get things done more often, they get the results that the other 3 labs don’t. The “good” 3 begin to attract more researchers and experiments. It’s not a surprise that someone trying to develop a new transportation system would wind up at one of those labs, right? And, when it was time to test it long range, they’d naturally put the other ends into the other labs. That’s when they’d discover that some places work for the system, and some do not. But it was developed on a ley line, so they never understood why.

Sylvari are creepy. Perhaps i missed something but here are some points:

  • The pale tree didnt tell anyone about the relationship to mordremoth, making the failed pact attack possible and resulted in thousands of deaths by sleeper cells

While I have many problems with the Pale Tree, I’m going to have to speak out in her defense on this one.

It was at her suggestion that everyone was called together for a big meeting, held in the Pale Tree so her avatar could attend. To me, that suggests that she had something she felt she needed to say personally, something of shattering import. In short, I think she planned to tell everyone the truth about the sylvari.

Sadly, she didn’t get to. She was badly injured shortly after the meeting began, and was never fully lucid after it. It’s quite possible that she expected Caithe to state the important facts, or she may not have remembered that she was interrupted before she could tell everyone. I really think we have to give the Pale Tree the benefit of the doubt this time.

A sylvari PC’s Wyld Hunt is supposed to be to destroy the Elder Dragons. At no point do we actually gain a second Hunt.

I think it’s to point out that action is and will remain a major focus of this game, so improving the action is always worth considering.

Adding lingering effects from some skills may not make them stronger, but it could make them FEEL stronger and more satisfying to use. A lot of GW2 abilities don’t really “sell” the damage they do, and I’ve love for the devs to go back and address this some day.

Option to hide other player's backpack

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

While I do understand the problem, I’m going to have to vote “No” on this idea.

Why? Because if we could hide backpacks or effects, then ANet would lose the restrictions on making them bearable. We’d have an “out” if we don’t want to see them, and they’d be free to go really over the top. I really don’t want that, I want them to be somewhat restricted and reserved on where they go from here.

Using the PvP generic models is about the best I can agree with. Sorry.

I want to be play the game on max settings, because I am able to. I don’t want to lower the graphics just because some players want to make the most obnoxious looking characters ever. I rather have an option that remove objects—backpacks in this case—that have started to destroy the awesome and beautiful appearance of the rest of the game.

You’re still lowering the graphics, just in very specific ways. Instead of removing some details on all the character, you’re removing all the details on some of the character. If someone with an awesome look (backpack included) walks by, you’ll never know it either way.

Palador.2170

Glint’s Egg was around the time Mordremoth’s voice was reaching Sylvari, and her Wyld Hunt dealt with it too.

But did her Wyld Hunt really have anything to do with the egg?

Caithe’s Hunt was to slay Zhaitan, which had been done. Nowhere is it said that ANY sylvari gets a second Hunt after their first is over.

Also, the vision from the Dream is passed to the Commander, not Caithe. Even the Pale Tree says this was for us to do, not Caithe. That’s why we were the ones given the vision, not her.

Caithe has a long history of making quick judgements and doing what she feels is right, but not applying that judgement to herself. In one of the sylvari starting stories (Shield of the Moon), she bluntly tells someone that his love is lost to nightmare, and he should move on. She also kills a member of the Nightmare Court that we had chosen to spare (I don’t recall which story that’s in, but it’s one of the sylvari stories). Also, I believe it was Caithe that decided Destiny’s Edge would go after Glint next, and would have killed her had Glint not reasoned with them.

Caithe is a monster that will do whatever she wants for her own ends, but expects better from others. Was that egg her Wyld Hunt? No. No, it was not.

Canach puts in a good word for her, saying that The Call and a Wyld Hunt together would mess with any sylvari’s mind, and I trust him. But we all know she was lying about the egg being her Hunt. The only thing that was confusing her was The Call being at odds with her own desires.

why did you remove hearts

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Palador.2170

I like for there to be at least a few hearts, because it gives a feeling of progression to the game. You enter a new area, put in some work, and soon you have an extra merchant that you can buy/sell with.

The best ones are the ones where the area around them has small changes when you complete the heart. Small objects appear/disappear, plants go from withered to healthy, walls get fixed, and the area becomes generally better. Something like that would make sense as we push into new areas (if we want to avoid the meta-event problems of HoT in the future). Imagine helping to build up a base camp somewhere, you start with half completed walls around the camp, and when you’re done the walls change to the finished version.

Still, I wouldn’t want it to be overused. A few per zone would be fine and reasonable. Too many, and you’re back to being the only competent person in a zone of lazy idiot NPCs again.

Down until they’ve fixed this version, I believe. There was something new on the gemstore to buy, and some people got the mini Garm before the shutdown. To avoid conflict between gemstore data and main game data (the fact that it will remember if you bought gems tells me there’s different data sets there), there has to have been something for you to buy. If they can make engineer turrets vulnerable to conditions, then I think they should do it to other objects too. The same balance issues apply, right?

Some conditions I can explain. Poison is wood rotting, fungus, or rust. Bleeding can be water causing wood warping and crack expansion.

Some I can’t really explain (crippled walls, for example), but even if they don’t seem to do anything by themselves, they need to apply so traits that rely on them can still function.

The problem with changing skills in combat is that the skills are balanced with the assumption that you can’t do that.

Let’s say you have two elite skills. One is useful pretty much any time you get into a fight, and the other is useful only when you’re outnumbered. Because the second skill is useful less often, they can make it a bit stronger to balance it out. Then, you have to decide between equipping a skill you’ll use more often or a stronger skill you’ll use only once in a while.

If you can change while fighting, then you can just change to the one that’s best for the fight you’re in. They would have to go back through and make some skills a lot weaker to make up for this.

Sadly, no. Nor can it be fixed, really.

You may recall that if you remove all of a character’s armor, some body parts will be wearing undergarments? Well, that’s what hair is to this game, it’s an undergarment on your head. When you put something onto that spot (note that “on face” and “on head” are actually two different spots), the “undergarment” disappears.

They could make new versions of the hats that appear to have hair sticking out from beneath them, but the hair would actually be part of the hat. It would take color from the hat’s color selections, not the hair’s. It would also be the same hair for everyone wearing that hat, no matter what style of hair they had before putting it on.

Charr player's Warband Responsibilities?

in Lore

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

The real question is who keeps sending those summons. Is it Smodur, or could it possibly be the unseen Blood Legion Imperator? I’m pretty sure Rytlock would talk with Smodur, the Imperator seems to have a good head on his shoulders and being understanding. But the way Rytlock brushes off those summons, it would have to be from somebody he really doesn’t like.

Given that the summons is coming from the Black Citadel, it shouldn’t be from the Blood Legion Imperator. And he’s apparently the one in charge of his warband, they wouldn’t have the authority to try to summon him.

I’m 90% sure it has to be from Smodur, or Rytlock’s Black Citadel counterparts in Iron and Ash Legion. Those three are pretty much the only ones there with the authority to even try it.

The problem is, he’s actually on pretty good terms with all three of them. So, why did he react as he did? In another thread, I suggested that he’s actually blind now, and while he can use his new powers to navigate the world around him, he can’t actually read the message. He crumples it up and throws it away so nobody will expect him to try. And if he returns to his station, his blindness will be quickly discovered. He’d be deemed unfit for active duty, and retired. I think that actually scares him, and that’s part of the reason why he quickly suggested forming a new guild for him to belong to.

[Edit] As for the player? I kind of assume that they visit home every now and then, check in, do paperwork and whatever else they need to do. That would be very boring to have to play out, though, so it happens “off camera”. But still, if you feel bad, visit your home instance. (Just wish my warband was in there.)

in Living World

Palador.2170

So, as the story starts, we get to see Rytlock being his old self, though he’s still in his new armor and wearing the blindfold. He’s mouring for Eir in his own way, and just as growly as ever.

In Rata Novus, though, we see him get a message (delivered by the leader of the Vigil herself, no less) from the Black Citadel. He simply crumples it up and tosses it away, stating that he’s already done that with the others he’s gotten. And that, in my mind, set off some alarms.

It was a moment of downtime, and the Rytlock we’ve seen in the story before now wouldn’t just ignore a call to come home. Even if it’s just to explain what happened, he would go back and report in. And yet, he’s ignoring it. Why? What happened?

Thinking about this, I realized that while he’s not the kind to just ignore orders, he is the kind to hide an injury. Especially if it’s one that would get him stripped of rank and active duty. Why does he not read the message? Because he can’t.

He’s blind.

Last S3E1 scene was disappointing (spoilers)

in Living World

Palador.2170

I honestly felt the ending was great, but there was a bit of “fridge logic” to it.

Caudecus doesn’t really grasp the true threat of the elder dragons. He’s fixed on his goal, and in his mind the dragons are just a distraction. Facing the truth will shatter him and show him how unimportant he really is, so he never faces it. We see some of that here, with his disturbingly narrow focus that makes him come across to us as an idiot.

The appearance of Lazarus was oddly underplayed, or so I felt when it happened. But it was interesting to see him casually dismiss Caudecus and his goals as unimportant. Interesting, and a surprise as well.

Then, at the very end, we get the message that Primordus is active. Everyone falls silent as it sinks in that the one dragon we should fear the most just became our number one dragon priority. And here’s where the fridge logic comes in. You see, Lazarus must have known what was happening, and that’s what he’s facing. Primordus can and WILL kill him, there’s no doubt about that. Lazarus basically just stuffed himself full of dragon food, he’s the biggest magical snack in the world right now.

Lazarus has a plan, and the White Mantle may be a part of it, but only if they’re useful. So, he showed up to make sure he had some of them he can use when the time comes. No flashy entrance, no huge proclamations of doom or joy. Just “Align White Mantle: check”. That’s all it was, him just checking off another box on his to-do list to get his plans ready. It was given all the theater we give to checking we have enough gas in the car before going for a drive, because that’s pretty much what it was to him.

There’s a good chance he had no idea who we were during that scene, so he paid us no real attention. That’s likely to change in the very near future, but it was very fitting for the moment. Nobody there was important to him, he just needed to appear and let them know he was back. Thus, the downplayed appearance and lack of conversation make complete sense.

While I disagree with Obtena on whether or not the spirit shards should be able to be earned before completing all mastery tracks, Obtena is right in saying that they can’t please everyone.

There will always be some content that one person will love but another person will hate.

What I’m disagreeing with is Obtena’s automatic dismissal of the idea simply because it’s being made in an attempt to open things up to everyone.

Seriously, says the gaming industry. What game accommodates every player that wants something … none. It’s impossible to do.

Impossible to do doesn’t mean it’s not a goal worth working towards within reason. Nobody will ever make the “perfect” game, but every game developer tries to get as close as they can. Suggestions shouldn’t be dismissed just because they won’t be perfect. The gaming industry knows that, that’s why we’re on the boards for GW2, and not Everquest or Ultima Online.

The suggestions may be of no merit to you, but that doesn’t mean the devs should just throw them out without consideration.

Never will the game accommodate every player and their lifestyle. Not having time to do something is never a reason to change it so that every player can get everything they want.

Says who?

Seriously, says who? You?

“Never” is a very strong word, and for a game that’s supposed to be played for fun, it’s a bit out of place here. It’s worth it for the devs to take a moment and ask “What do we lose and gain if we put in a more casual way to do this?” Sometimes it’s not going to be worth it, but “never”?

Given that the new zone is in many ways the fallout of the raids, I’d say they could put in a purchased Raid Mastery unlock, paid for with zone currency. Then, add in a mastery track that, each time it’s completed, unlocks an extra mastery point. (Actually, two tracks. One for HoT, one for CT.) That way, even casual players can slowly but surely get all of the mastery tracks filled in over time, but the more hardcore players are able to skip over that grind (because they’ve done other kinds of grind instead.)

how is this discriminating against PvE players when PvP and WvW players aren’t getting these either?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but PvP and WvW don’t give EXP at all. Instead, you get Tomes, which DO turn into spirit shards for level 80 characters. So, PvP and WvW players ARE getting them, just in a slightly different presentation.

Very, very “No” on both of those, thank you.

What I would like to see is a description field that the player can fill out, that others can read by right clicking on the character.

If you’re a RPer, you can fill it with a brief backstory or RP notes. If you want people to know what kind of gear or build you have, you can list it there for them to read. And if you want to duel people, you can start/join a guild made for that (with a guild hall arena), and put in your description that you’ll gladly accept all challenges by going to the arena in your guildhall and fighting.

This change makes me sad. Not because I may miss out on some keys (honestly, I’m surprised that the zone would give them for mapping), but because it was fun to just fly in parts of the zone.

I took a level 40 there, and had fun seeing how much magic I could grab out of the air before something (just about anything, really) would spot me and shoot me down. I don’t have Ley Line gliding, and therefore can’t get the last flying skill for the zone. It made it a sort of flying stealth mission, where touching down for even a moment was a huge risk, but sometimes unavoidable. It gave a bit of zone currency and Exp as well, so it didn’t feel like I was just wasting my gaming time.

If there’s a good reason to lock out lower level characters, then I understand that it must be done. I just hope we get an equally interesting flying area for all levels, sometime soon. (Tengu city, perhaps?)

Palador.2170

((Minor spoilers below, but I will try to keep them vague.))

I’m going to talk about the zone, and the problems I see with it.

First, it really IS small. Normally, I’d actually be okay with that. But in this case, there are things you can buy that work in this zone, and ONLY in this zone. The zone’s size limits the number of events you can find, and the number of uses you’ll get out of things like the gliding skills. It makes the cost of the skills seem somewhat unfair.

Second is the enemies. Look, if you dose someone with radiation, they might get super powers (in a comic book), but they’re far more likely to get sick and die. That’s what should be happening here, with those blasted and changed by the magic. It’s even stated that they need to keep one step ahead of the problem, or they’ll die. And yet, they’re really not on death’s door. They’re strong, far stronger than they should be. We, the hero, should be stronger than them. They, the sick and dying, should be fighting with desperation, not just acting like extra strong versions of normal NPCs. Also, those thrown rocks…. seriously, guys.

Finally, this is a zone where you have to spend a lot of time preparing to have fun. Now, a lot of players have done that work back in main HoT. They’ve got all or most of the gliding unlocked, and they’re good to go here. But anyone that hasn’t done that yet is going to be at a SERIOUS disadvantage in this zone. They may be able to complete it, but a lot of the fun mechanics of flying in the zone will be missing for them. Lacking just Ley Line gliding is enough to take some of the fun out of it, imagine trying it without updrafts. And yet, it’s supposed to be friendly to those that haven’t finished HoT yet, and may have only the bare basics of gliding to work with. Those people will have to spend a lot of time preparing to have fun instead of just having fun here.

Now, I should point out that the last point I made is somewhat addressed by the zone itself. You can save up and buy boosts to your EXP gain in this zone, adding up to a nice 30% boost. And that’s sure to help people earn those gliding masteries. However, the boosts themselves are a bit expensive, and for someone lacking full gliding, it’s going to be a tough grind to earn them all. And when you take into consideration my first point, you can see that it will indeed become a grind. The second point gets worse as well, because they’ll be locked out of several of the gliding combat skills you can buy to help you to survive in the zone.

The entitlement makes me cringe

Are you sure it’s entitlement? They have made quite the habit of doing a patch every two weeks lately, I’m sure lots of people were expecting one today as part of that pattern. And when you know something’s coming, and it oddly doesn’t, it can throw you off. You’re just waiting for it, knowing that as soon as you accept that it’s not coming, it’ll arrive.

I know there’s good reason for them to not have a small patch just two weeks before their big one, but it still threw me off when I got home today and found no patch notes waiting to be read. If I had been home during the day, I’m sure I would have kept wondering when that yellow text would pop up in the game telling me that I’m going to have to patch soon.

IRL activities generating in-game rewards?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Palador.2170

I can’t see them making anything IRL interactive like Pokemon Go for the Guild Wars franchise, it just doesn’t really fit.

I could, however, see them come up with some kind of “Clash of Clans” type game or RTS where you build up guilds to fight with each other. A game set in the actual “Guild Wars” of Tyria’s history. You could unlock interesting characters and bits of lore, which then might show up in GW2 as some uncovered bit of ancient history. And if they link the games, then maybe meeting some goals in the Guild game could unlock a few minor skins like a shield or back banner with the emblem of one of those ancient guilds for GW2.

That way, playing one game tempts you with the other, in the hopes that you end up playing both and giving ANet even more money.

Palador.2170

I had a problem with that scene, and I still do. If it was up to me, here’s how I’d rewrite it:

Faolain trips, and Eir frees her. Faolain sees the monster coming up after them, and as soon as she’s free she rolls clear without warning Eir. It jumps in, knocking Eir face down into the dirt, and its forefoot comes down on Eir’s legs. Eir screams, and Faolain looks back for one moment as if she might try to help, but then runs away. Eir shifts to wolf form to try and break free, but the monster grinds its foot down, crushing Eir’s legs and hurting her badly enough that she passes out and returns to her true form.

At the end of the fight, she’s barely alive. Braham and Rox still split off for a bit to take her to medical aid, unsure if she’ll survive or not. Faolain’s death is shown in a cutscene after the mission, showing that her abandonment of Eir is soon repaid. HoT progresses on from there as normal.

AFTER HoT, however, you’d have the injured Eir still around. Legs shattered, she’ll never walk again. Her depression returns, and she feels worse than useless now, wishing she’d died in battle instead of living like this. And then it’s Taimi that steps in and talks to Eir, getting her to see that she’s still useful, still needed. And in Trahearne’s absence, Eir becomes an adviser to the Pact (or whatever’s left in its wake).

Yeah, I’ve felt that way. It’s part of the reason why I have so many characters. Some of them exist simply to provide one type of gameplay without my having to switch equipment and traits around to get it.

As for the Legendary weapons, they still plan to come out with a new one for each class, but that’s been put on hold for now. The basic problem was that the way they were doing it was a ton of work for a small and flawed result. It’s put on hold until they can get other things up and running, and then they’ll have to go back and take a long look at how they’re doing it and maybe come up with something better.

Finally, have you tried a greatsword/dual dagger Reaper? The daggers are quick and flashy, not really melee but they do give the “in your face” and fast feeling that you’d expect of dual swords. And the greatsword attacks are big, slow, and hit like a truck, with some magical effects and attacks thrown in there as well.

Season 3 Will Suffer

in Living World

I think ANet’s doing it right this time. (Excuse me, I need to go burst into flame for having just said that.)

There are things happening in the world that show us events are happening, and I think they leyline stuff shows that it happens at/after the end of the main story in HoT. These things are setting up the world at large for where LS3 can jump in, they’re basically a prelude to get some plot points introduced and explained so LS3 doesn’t need to waste time doing that.

There will always be some people over-expecting what’s coming next, but it’s when we get some vague details that rampant over-speculation really takes off. So, not providing any details until just a couple of weeks before, at most, is really the way to go. This goes for the whole update, really, not just LS3.

I expect the summer update to hit two weeks from tomorrow (July 25). So, I expect to start hearing details about it in the next two weeks, but mostly in the week before it hits. Time to get excited for it, but not enough time for us to turn it into insane hype that it can never live up to.
