Best:

Dungeon updates (inc improved aetherpath drop)
Basically has widened the game out for me again, which is a very good thing

Worst:
Balance. I mean to cut a major pillar of design for an elite (reaper) is not re-assuring for future elites. Bit of faith lost here in their plans for specialisations, knowing anything could change down the line..

So, can't decide what profession to boost...

Does heart of thorns give enough hero points?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

There are 3 ways to get Hero Points:

1. Leveling up – You already got all of these when you hit level 80
2. Hero Points on Core Tyria Maps – These give 1 HP each
3. Hero Points on Heart of Thorns Maps – These give 10 HP each, but many require a group of people.

To unlock your elite specialization you will need to do 2, 3, or a mix of 2 and 3, but all combined there are many more than enough.

Plus WvW as well, either via hero points on the map or through the WvW system

Yes thats what im talking about. Like not totally free charges, just for the specific item you have. I reeeeeeeeeally want this.

You sound like a hoarder like me. To be honest, I’ve just bought a skin specific bank tab. I know trans charges are easy to get and it’s a non-issue really, but it feels like a waste to just bin usable skins..

Do you mean convert skins which auto unlock, but leave the skin as well, into transmutation charges?

It’s been bandied around as an idea before, but I’ve not seen an official response. Just remember deleting them still keeps your skin forever, you just have to use charges

It’s a good idea though to convert skins into charges

So no new legendaries but...

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Gem store skins do not have the same level of coding. Legendaries need to be connected up to collections, events, crafting. In some cases that means new events, new recipes, new items, new icons for each item and then tieing it all together and bug testing it to try and hope it doesnt break ( which we know can easily happen). Plus there is the story within the journey itself which needs plotting out.

The two products are not comparable as has been said many times in other threads, including the official one on the general subforum

Trust me, I won’t be one remembering her history. Looks like I should be grateful to have missed her story.

Not necessarily. She was poorly written, but despite all this, some of the most epic and finest content updates have come about because of her story. In hindsight, I can live with the trade off.

Profession Balance is not up to Par

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Randulf.7614

Nerfing Reaper is fine if needed. Changing one of the founding pillars of design is not. This isn’t balancing, it risks in fact eroding trust about future Elite specs and the uniqueness of them.

Whilst most of QoL changes in the patch are extremely good for the future of the game and for bringing people back in who felt excluded, some of the balance changes are just becoming circular now. We’ve taken Reapers back to when we fed back they were under performing in beta. Why nerf back to the point you agreed they shouldn’t be at before?

Why not collaborate more with the community instead of shutting them out and destroying builds for those who have spent good time and money getting things like full vipers ascended, who now feel that is lost on them?

Perhaps the nerf should have started with a direct dps reduction to see how that worked, rather than making it a condition which acivates another condition to dps. That is quite the leap to make…

why not just reduce chill damage?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

It’s a random change and makes very little sense. Activate a condition which is nerfed to activate another condition which doesn’t do a whole lot of damage.

Reapers were designed partly on the foundation that chill did damage. This was a big draw to the elite and I for one was very excited to push through and unlock it from the list.

And now, it’s lost one of its founding pillars and as you say, much of its uniqueness. This should not have happened and certainly not without communicating with the Necro community, who have built up their toons at time and expense of their own gameplay, only to find it is all undone.

The problem now is, how can players buy into future Elites if they know any of their chief mechanics can be removed at any time, making them no longer unique.

Masteries take too long to level

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

A day to get one level is extremely fast in my book. This is meant to be a long term progression system, not something completed very, very quickly.

It also feels like it goes slower if you are actively grinding for it. My final bar went in 3 days whilst I was doing various events and achievements and that felt waaaaay too fast.

The xp gain is far, far quicker than getting the mastery points, so I don’t think it’s a major issue.

Scarlet Briar and why she should be forgotten

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Be thankful that’s all you had to deal with.
Briar was literally a thorn. Not in a compliment kind of way.

Scattered, broken, inconsistent backstory and development that appeared out of no where and somehow made all the other NPCs drop several IQs during the seasons.
She had potential, but Anet blew that chance. She was just a reason to segway to the next dragon. Even if it made little sense.

The only good thing that came from her was the Marionette fight, which sadly still has had only poor replicas in its place in other areas.

I thought the Breachmaker fight was the best, but the Marionette was certainly a close second.

I really loved the Marionette fight. And the destruction of Lion’s Arch was really fun, too. I still remember running all over the city, amazed at how different it looked and shocked that they actually went so far as to change it like that.

There’s a lot of good stuff in LS1 – the Queens Gauntlet festival, The Invasions, the Tower and especially the Marionette and BAttle for LA. The story was utter nonsense, but I thoroughly enjoyed most of the gameplay aspects in the above examples.

The trailer of course glossed over the most crucial and exciting piece however…….

What is the expected lifespan of GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Once an MMO hits a certain point, it tends to sustain itself pretty well, regardless of population drops. GW1 showed that.

Look at Anarchy Online – approaching its 15th anniversary and still not only hanging on with a tiny population, but has been adding new areas, instances, quests over the past few months! But for maybe 6 years it was devoid of anything and yet it remains Funcoms steadiest ship and has done despite flushing money into Lego and TSW.

Lotro – suffered horribly at the hands of GW2 and TESO in terms of losing players as people leave to find more modern gameplay for their fantasy needs. Yet, despite everything, it is now up to 9 years and on the brink of Mordor. And it still has horrible technical issues and dull, outdated gameplay, with treadmill grinds

Age of Conan. I’m baffled how this is still going, yet 8 years on, this dated and clunky fantasy MMO still carries on somehow.

GW2 is pretty resilient to lose direction and focus so dramatically after release and still retain a strong following. It certainly has many, many years in it, although how it will expand and not divide the population is a mystery to me, but it has a long journey ahead of it.

Anet on HoT Story design

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

It would be cool if they could take more time with future installments of the story, though. Sometimes, it’s those extra little details that can really make a difference and add a lot to a narrative.

Yes very much so. Strong stories are creeping into the MMO genre a lot lately – TSW, SWTOR and FF14 to name just 3. GW2 has spent a great deal of time refining its open world to a point where perhaps story has suffered. The personal story barely used the world it lived in and now HoT is skipping through the maps like a stone on the waves.

Expansion stories need meat – much more so than the season intervals. HoT needed to be comparable to at least half length of the PS, as it was we had the shortest story arc yet.

Perhaps the continuous story isn’t working and we need to return to the days of complete campaigns, which link together rather than trying to emulate TV series or one long story chopped up. Whilst the quality of the personal story wasn’t as high as Anet have proven they can write, it was complete.

Dungeon Revitalization

Danikat
The dungeons were required to progress the story line when GW 2 first came out. That lasted about 30 seconds because of all the complaining.

Arah was left as the end because how else could you finish personal story killing Zhaitan with the original dungeon design? They would have had to rewrite/design the entire end of the personal story.

The story modes are designed 5 person. They are doable with less depending on skill level.

I’m pretty certain dungeon stories were not required post-launch. Possibly during a beta where feedback changed it? I remember shortly after launch progressing the story well beyond the level of the first dungeon and past the point Ascalon was introduced.

Anet on HoT Story design

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I’ve copied and pasted from the thread about Reddit quotes to generate a critical (positive or negative) discussion on the story and how it came to be so short and missed out so many key details for many.

It’s an interesting clarification, however it sounds like they boxed themselves in either by constraints on resources or by putting so much into a cliffhanger ending for S2, they felt they had nowhere else to go, but follow through with a rapid fire plot which left a rushed HoT ending and added many unanswered questions. I also think they seem intent on either delivering as a “summer blockbuster” or as a tv serial in presentation – neither of which are appropriate in my mind for a video game medium. Continuing on the good work in Nightfall, EOTN and Beyond is perhaps where they should be going in my opinion instead of emulating styles from different mediums – something which rarely works.

There were of course improvements to instance length, dialogue, characters. It seems to be the narrative, lore inclusions and actual plot which is the sticking point for many (from what I can ascertain).

If we want to improve the story going forward, this is place to pull together ideas, point where it went right and crucially where it specifically went wrong and how it could have been improved.
This is not the place to insult, bash or mock the devs so I ask please keep it civil (for as long as possible anyway..)

Yeah, our story teams are smaller, more tight-knit groups of devs…a combination of narrative designers and gameplay designers are the core of the teams that implement story. But you pretty well described how we work – lots of meetings and discussions that focus on character and plotting at the front, then we prototype/rough in the major beats and fill out details as we go. Story in particular goes through a LOT of iteration.

It’s easy for people not in the trenches to think that “higher ups” dictate things from on high, but that’s just not been the case at Arenanet. While yes, there are always certain constraints that we have to work within, the team is as involved in those decisions as anyone at the top. I honestly can say that we made the best story that we could given the team and the resources that we had. It’s easy to look back on it now and say “we should have done this” and “we could have done that”, but at the end of the day we had to believe in what we shipped, or we wouldn’t have shipped it – that is the bottom line. I can say that we’ve read all the feedback, both positive and negative, about the decisions that we made as a team, and we’re committed to continuing to improve our story-telling the more that we do.

I appreciate the clarification. And the honesty, so let me be honest back. From a player’s POV, I definitely prefer games that take their time to develop a rich world and story and I personally strive to deliver that as much as possible in the content I’m responsible for.
Heart of Thorns however, was a very peculiar case for us in that the story’s pacing from the get go just never felt right to us whenever we stopped the action to go into the deeper lore behind everything. When your game’s story begins with a tragedy of epic proportions and there’s a need to maintain the time pressure of the drama we’re working within, any stops along the way felt artificial to us during development. We did have plans to delve more below the surface with some areas, but because of the concerns we had with maintaining the narrative momentum, we opted instead to let those tales be told outside of the instances and through open world exploration (the “story” of Guild Wars 2 is not just about the chapters you see in the journal, or at least, it’s supposed to be) so that the story would be more focused on finding and rescuing your allies. Clearly, that decision was not popular with some of our players, and we’re taking that feedback as a learning experience. I guess the way I have come to think about it looking back is that I think we approached HoT story more like a “summer blockbuster” than a 13 episode run of your favorite TV show – which was a departure for us and quite possibly too far outside the comfort zone of many of our players who are invested in the GW2 story.

Looked at through that lens when answering the question “Was I happy with the pacing?” I would say that yes, with some notable exceptions, I was happy because we met the goals we set for ourselves and delivered a “blockbuster” ending – of course it wasn’t perfect, and there are always things I can look back at and say we could have done better, but I would disagree that there was a lack of any kind of emotion (and I realize that’s my subjective opinion, but it’s my honest opinion).
The exceptions where I might have done things differently with would have been: 1. It would have helped for us to have re-framed or spent more time on the discovery of Mordremoth’s weakness and 2. I would have wanted to go back and add non-VO text conversations on the PC’s allies throughout the story so that we could have given more optional background information or additional context that was lost by us choosing such a deliberate pace.

(quotes are from Lead Story writer Matthew Medinas replies on Reddit – I didn’t add in the questions since the answers should provide enough context and there is some toxicity from Reddit questions I didn’t want to bring across)
