So, does this include class balancing?

Class balancing is a PvP issue. I do not believe this idea deserves any dev time because most of us would like to see content instead.

You’re only speaking for yourself, though. I want to see more content added too. Class balancing is a big issue in PvP, and it should be addressed soon.

Balance team also has nothing to do with content generators. No reason not to have class balance and content.

Achievement Points Cap

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

The achievement point cap was okay while the reward for getting 3 achievements was 10 achievement points. However, the reward today is 3 spirit shards and 10 achievement points. Unfortunately even though I’ve hit my cap, I still end up doing the dailies anyway because that’s how I get my spirit shards.

It feels wrong somehow.

I’m drowning in spirit shards. Once I hit the cap (not for a long while yet!), I’m still drowning in spirit shards. So it’s not much incentive. I get more from the daily gathers, because wood and ore are delicious.

Actually finishing dailies, especially PvE ones, is still a huge chore. We complained back then, offered a dozen solutions, and ANet plugged their ears again. :\ So, dailies are still in a garbage spot.
Not personally a proponent of a cap, and a few self-important, high-AP salty tears would be icing on removing that cap, but that’s a mean line of thought.

I think a progressive cap would be a reasonable compromise:

  • Every 1st of the month, raise the daily cap by 100.
  • Daily AP awards 5 instead of 10. (Preserves the value of some achievements)
This gives a little extra reason for capped players to log in, without a daily stress to do so. It also means that those not capped aren’t perpetually chasing the cap. Do 20 dailies a month, hit cap again. Do 30 dailies a month and stretch toward catching the cap. Out of the tens of thousands of points out there, a monthly raise is less than 1% of the highest APs out there.

Well, that’s only a preliminary post to warn folks of things that are vanishing that they might want to work on (fractal achieves) or not work on (scribing costs). MO’s language suggests there are other things planned in the patch as well.

He does point to his prior reddit post which covers a little more. April is where I’m (foolishly) hinging my “I can play this game again” hopes in making HoT more time-accessible.

Make XP Great Again

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I don’t really understand the people who say the skip over things they used to do just because now the XP they get doesn’t mean anything. Same here, the XP I get in core Tyria doesnt give me anything extra but I still res players, because its a nice thing to do. I still help lower levels with events and hero points because I like helping people. I still res NPCs from time to time because it feels good, they can go on with their life and whatnot, its a role playing thing . I also still do events from time to time, just for the hell of it. Blowing up stuff with my meteor showers is fun. I don’t see why you would suddenly stop doing things just because there is no reward attached to it. If you only did it to get rewards in the first place then perhaps you’re not playing the game to have fun but just grinding rewards for the next ‘fix’.

I much rather have stuff available in the open for me to play around with than have them gated behind “progression”. That just forces me to do stuff I don’t want to do to unlock stuff I want to do.

On the topic though, adding a simple reward to celebrate another full XP bar would still be cool. It wouldn’t change how I play but it would be cool to see a small chess pop up, rewarding me with a mystic coin, a spirit shard or whatever every once in a while. I just don’t want to see anything gated behind it, else sooner or later it will force you to grind it and that takes all the fun away.

Don’t quite have to understand it to know that the phenomenon is real. It’s something the devs need to put attention toward.

I could see myself being nice and rezzing a downed player, and at least event participation gives tangible rewards, but most of the time, I’m avoiding content that would give me too much XP, because dailies already fill that bar. Yup, not even done with all the Tyria masteries, and I’m already ducking content that slows me down.

Do we really have someone posting in these threads trying to be the moderator too?

Beware the Cult of Personality, my friend.

Unfortunately, that tends to be what gets ANet to listen. It feels that way, judging by observational cause and effect. Someone who gets more streaming views than their PvP Twitch feeds expresses something, and suddenly, that thing has to change.

Nevermind the legion of forum posts, some that go on for 30-40 pages, and a small fraction of that coming from some people reasonably educated on development and game design. I’ve seen some really good ideas hanging around the official forums and some dedicated work by players who really want things to be better.

How do you name your characters?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I mostly try to respect the lore and mix it with a touch of fun. Like my asura lifestealer necro called “Deglutionist Ipp”, or my worn out charr warrior named “Carracido Rustclaw”, or the sylvari thief known as “Reynard Issengrim”.

But I have a problem.

My older, most used and loved character is an asura engie girl. When I created her, I was just thinking on doing a “test character” to try the game, the race and the proff, so I didn’t put too much smarts in the operation. (In fact, she was a “he” at that moment. Eventually make her a girl because I like the female asura voices more than the males, for engie, at least.).

At first I tryed to name the character “Ardid”, but the name was taken. At this point I didn’t knew the lore behind the race, but somehow I figured the proper name should be short, so I tryed different coherent short combinations which were also taken. Of course, neither did I knew I could add a surname to make the name more unique without resorting to odd stuff, so I finally just began to mix weird letters togheter.

The name that finally passed the filters was “Qwytz”. Weird, I know, but fairly asuran, IMHO.

That afternoon I began to play with him, and simply fell in love with the race, proffession, (and all the game, really) and couldn’t stop playing with the character until I reached level 50. It was not a test character anymore. Upon reaching 80, I make her a girl, and designed a full armor set around the “Mad Sciency Girl that Loves to Burns Stuff” concept for her.

Months later, after reading the 3 books and playing the personal story and knowing better all the game lore, I began to dislike the name. Mostly because it could be more asuran, because people don’t know how to pronounce it (me neither, really), and because it sounds close to “quit” which was never my intent (I’m not an english native speaker, that’s my excuse).

So I got a name change contract. And… And now I really don’t know how to name her. I got used to seeing her as “Qwytz”, and my guild usually calls me by this name.

I thought to change the name just a bit (Qwyzz, Wytz, or Wyzz) and adding some title to make her even more asuran themed (Pyroclastic Wyzz, Havocaster Wytz)…

But I just can’t decide. The name change contract has spent months sitting in my bank.

Help?
(Maybe I should just make another thread for this… but where?)

You love her and you just can’t
(•_•) / ( •_•)-o-o / (o_o)
Qwytz her.

Seems like a fine Asura name to me. I’d vote to not change it.

What I object to is every fanboy regurgitating streamers (ohlook, there’s a BogOtter thread..) because some ‘icon’ decided they’re upset or bored. It’s beyond Chicken Little crying just because one player is being a human whose opinion evolved over a little game development detail.

Wuh-oh, I hive-minded into the bog collective and posted his video in a thread! We are the Bog. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile

I don’t see anybody being a chicken little over anything Bog said unless they outright disagree with him. Don’t know what you’re talking about here…

If his opinion’s that important, he can post it himself.

The policy shift on legendaries signifies another disturbing shift in GW2’s development. But we knew that already. The “oh noes a streemur said” thing is just an unnecessary echo chamber. He’s not an industry insider or a developer, he’s a player. Like everyone else. It’s irresponsible to incite a panic just because he had a big huff in public.

I’d say the good thing about his video is that it highlights a point of conversation. A conversation that’s already started: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Legendary-weapons-6/first

The concept of a traditional MMORPG is dying

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

What will suffer are games like Final Fantasy (hence 13) where the gameplay is not only repetitive but it’s not as “drag and drop” friendly. People log into MMO, play their fill, log out, we all win; people log into MOBA, into Shooter, into Sports, etc. and play their fill and log out and everyone is happy. Slower games like RPGs (not MMORPGs) tend to suffer because their models can’t keep up.

This right here brushes on one of the hardships for MMOs and RPG games in general. They often don’t deliver meaningful play experience in the short times modern players have available. A “good” dungeon can take over an hour to explore, maybe several, but then the baby cries or the dogs need to go out, and you have to pause or step away from the keyboard with an apologetic AFK that stalls your party/raid group.

In other games, that meaningful play experience is the length of one match (for most MOBAs 15-20 minutes), and you can take a break or stop playing for a while. You can come back to it without much need to build up to feel useful. But RPGs require progression and grind to keep up. Not so much an issue with single player titles, but with MMOs, it greatly affects what kind of content you’re allowed/welcomed to do.

Shooters and MOBAs also have definitive exit points, so you can choose when to stop. RPGs string you along with story or level/gear grinds, and MMOs tend to have a wealth of side tasks to keep most players busy for a long time. Great for on-the-dollar value, but bad for knowing when to stop or feeling like you can stop and not fall behind on rewards.

It’s where GW2 seems to fail most of all. Two-hour meta cycles for HoT, three-hour cycles on bosses. If a meaningful play experience is “finish daily Fire Elemental fight” but you just missed it, that’s a 2+ hour wait to get into the content. Or watching Axemaster fail, again, then realizing you can’t even try again for another two hours.. Well, most people are going to log out and do something more engaging. And if you’re building up to finishing that two-hour meta, you’re stuck. You can’t leave without penalty. You could’ve played for an hour but have another 30 minutes until the bosses show up. The exit point is still way far away, you can’t leave the map without losing progress, and there’s barely a safe spot aside from the starting waypoint. It’s not humane design.

That is likely one of the bigger challenges to RPG and MMO design will face. How can devs balance casual, two-hour play against hardcore 6+ hour sessions and still keep enough content and an economy afloat? Not something I have an answer to.

Too funny, Ashen.

I sort of stumbled a little with one of my characters. I thought a good name for her (a Norn) would be Cold as Charity so I called her Charity Coldas. When I later rejoined my guildies they were all amused and asked about her cold bottom. I honestly didn’t see it when I named her. I am Australian and we don’t use that word for bottoms – well we do but it is spelt differently and pronounced with a long A. I have always hoped I don’t offend any sensitive soul who might see it and think I meant it differently.

You could just tell them that the other ‘s’ is lost somewhere in Oceana ping times. :P

I personally just see it as an emotional response to a tough call MO may have had to make.

This seems a tad condescending. I don’t see people wanting to receive what they paid for as purely “emotional.” I see wanting what you paid for as being fairly reasonable.

I didn’t mean for it to be condescending. If it is, I apologize.

From my perspective: Whether their position (input) is reasonable or not — the response (or output) is bloated emotionally.

I hope I’m making sense.

Without being sassy about it, it is an emotional situation and that’s how people are reacting. And for many, rightfully so. We do feel cheated by this expansion, for one reason or another:

  • The garbage timing of meta-events
  • “Adventures” execution
  • Some enemy designs/difficulty following a disturbing pattern of laziness and false difficulty
  • Locking solo/character progression behind group events and “Adventures”
  • Abandoning Legendary weapon journeys
  • Megaservers and so much taxiing required to get on a “good” map
  • Excessive material/gold sink Grinds for pretty much everything new

So many of us feel blindsided by what came out, and we’ve had a long drought to contemplate that.

Instruction how not to be disappointed again:

Dunno if I’m setting myself up for disappointment, necessarily. I expect it, at this point.

But April’s update will determine if I come back for more play time or if I binge on console games again. I still recall getting so torqued at a failed metaevent that I turned around and rage-bought a game. Currently clocked at 80 hours on it, so it was a worthy purchase.

I don’t like that GW2 inspired that in me, though. So, I want to have hope for April, even though I don’t believe ANet can deliver the right adjustments.

There’s a phrase I think fits here:

“Expectations are just premeditated disappointments.”

How do you name your characters?

Rauderi.8706

Ah, I love Charr names, because they make a creator think. Each one is a story in itself.

Not that I’m immune to making pun names. Two of my three oldest characters were puns. I’ve since deleted/recreated one, and I love his fluffiness all the more for it, and I keep needling myself about a name-change contract for my very first baby.

But lesse..
Humans: More or less humany names with some veiled meaning to their purpose. There’s also a quasi self-insert guardian with an old LARP name. :P

Norn: Typical norning snorning names, usually incorporating some element of their role or spirit animal.

Asura: These are hard to be lore appropriate with, and there’s at least one or two puns in my not-a-gnome set. One decided that she would “invent” the concept of “secondary identification nomenclatures” so her research wouldn’t be confused with the thousand other Lummi-named magigophers in existence. The other, Fhorrz, has a fairly typical-ish name, and his academic specialty is consecrating fields. He calls them, obviously, Fhorrz’s Fields. (If I reached any farther for that, my arm’d fall off. :P)

Sylvari: I’ve managed to make it so far by cheating with Welsh or fantasy-esque names, some with a title. Then there’s the poe necromancer: Venus Nightshade. Bask in her hardcore emo (and splatter-pastel Wintersday dress).

Charr: Personality and backstory in three words. I take some time to get those just right, though of late I’ve been working them into their own little warband collections: Malus (Blood), Thunder (Blood), Stride (Iron), Dragon (Iron), Mist (Ash). I swear, at the time, I hadn’t seen Mist as such a popular word. :P And then I ran into another Mistherald and I had to throw myself off a cliff. (Don’t worry, gliders were involved.)

Ayup.

ANet seems to have this thing of “we have numbers, therefore decisions” without actually determining why those numbers exist. And few things chuff me as hard as bad science.

I’m tempted to believe the main reason the HoT maps are the way they are (long meta-event chains, map-based “keys” taking inventory slots, boxes you open on a cast time that’s interrupted on hit) is because they looked at metrics showing that a majority of players spent a disproportionate amount of time in the Silverwastes.

/blink
Interesting thought.

Not quite what I was going for. More directly related, there’s probably metrics on how many legendaries are actually in game and how many people are completing legendary collections. They might see low player adoption of these items as a reason not to continue.

But they’re not asking why there is low player adoption, and the reason is easily smeared all over the forums: It’s too expensive/grindy. It’s recognized as a fat material sink and it’s obvious. So, fewer players than anticipated are going to participate because ANet felt the need to “preserve the value of precursors”.

Very poor video, he total misses the points why people are upset, and he is pulling numbers out of his kitten , he even says that he doesn’t have figures.

Agreed. Actually wanted to dislike the video, but apparently he hid behind a safe wall.

Actually I think he made a valid point. Anet knows how many players by percentage have even 1 legendary. They know how many have 2.

If they create 16 legendary journeys, what they’re doing is creating content that most people will never do. It’s not really like a dynamic event or even a dungeon or fractal. It’s a long term goal that many people either can’t reach or can’t be bothered going for.

Saying that he doesn’t have numbers is quite irrelevant because Anet does have those numbers and they made the decision.

Maybe they should have made the journey more of a journey and less of a
material / gold grind .. since that was what a lot people expected i think.
So yeah .. they wanted to do quests instead of pay 1000g or whatever, but
what they got is do the quests and pay still 999g .. lol

Ayup.

How do people feel and what do you think about WoodenPotatoes latest video?

Don’t care, and never will, about one doof’s opinion. We have an entire player base to be concerned about, not just slaves to some streamer.

Swing and a miss.

WP discusses issues facing the GW2 community in a logical, salient manner. You don’t have to agree with him to be able to watch the video and see if his ideas/content have any value. Maybe you completely disagree- and that’s totally fine. (I’m assuming here) that the whole point of this thread and WP’s videos are to start/have a conversation about what the community feels are important issues. The video is at least worth a listen.

I’ve been on this sinking ship as long as anyone else. I’d have to be particularly sated with GW2 to be unaware of why this game is struggling. There are enough mass communication methods that we don’t need one kewkew with a webcam telling us what’s wrong. We already know.

This is disappointing, especially since new legendaries were advertised as being part of the HoT content, which people paid for.

That’s putting it nicely.

I realize that the development of a legendary journey is long and complicated, but this was certainly pitched as a reason to buy the expansion. There will be a lot of rightful salt over this, and ANet is pretty much explicitly stating that they intend to plug their ears about it.

Tybalt had the most pathos, honestly. And old, broken-down soldier on desk duty suddenly gets a chance to make a difference. And when he does, it’s with wit and a smile.

Forgal’s introduction was beyond the border of good taste for a tsundere. He couldn’t be bothered to like/teach you, and he actively resented your presence. “Oh, I got saddled with some junior soldier wannabe. Again. Guess I’ll put up with it.”
When you prove to be a good li’l professional murderer, he comes around and starts to get chummy. But not too chummy; better watch yer mouth, youngun.

As a part of a technical solution, after the first story run, use the challenge mote idea, but a little differently.

In this case, the challenge mote would recreate the instance to that specific challenge. If the challenge fails, player gets booted back to the beginning. If it succeeds, it ends the instance entirely, so that it doesn’t need to continue. Not ideal, but it reduces the impact of errors that could spawn by having that reset button.

  1. Tengu (Best shot of getting added)
  2. Skritt (I remember a mock character creation screen someone did. Adorbs~)
  3. Kodan (Would be interesting from a lore perspective)
  4. Ogre (Through story, some of them are allies)
  5. Krait (Because everyone would hate me ;_; )

I recall there were technical issues involved in resetting more complex content like story achievements. Those need to be resolved, ANet.

OP is correct here, and good game design demands not punishing players for failing at challenging tasks. Especially when mastery points are tied behind them.

HoT needs to be nerfed

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Disclaimer: I am not advocating for massive nerfs btw. Just some minor tweaks, here and there.

To be honest, this. I’ve gotten used to the increased threat of the enemies, and for the most part, they no longer bother me. There are some enemies that need to be re-tooled in some way or another, but, I’ve become content with enemy design overall.
A fair question the creature design team needs to ask is “If this showed up in PvP, how many salty tears and angry forum posts would it produce?” And then design according from there.

As such, I’m kinda eeeehhhh on saying HoT needs to be nerfed. The Hero Point Champs need to disappear or scale appropriately starting with 1 player. Access to certain exploration and Adventures needs to increase. Meta events need some drastic availability changes.

But monsters nerfed? A few, yes, but the rest are in a good spot.

Food - 25% Movement speed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Lol didn’t even realize that it looked like -25% till just now after wondering wtf ya’ll are talking about.

My bad.

Meant Food: 25% Movement speed

Currently to have a 25% movement speed you need to give up something in order to use something else. A utility slot, a weapon, a trait, a set of runes. With a speed buff from food it’s a 25% speed buff toggled on and off, on demand and no cooldown.

For example: they would have the food speed buff and combat buffs in inventory which they keep open and minimized to one side. In WvW they hit the speed food to have plus 25% speed to roam or to catch up with someone. Once combat is about to start they hit the combat buff food. If they need to disengage or chase someone they hit the speed buff food. They can have speed buffs and still have a preferred weapon set, an extra utility skill, a different trait chosen or a different set of runes. A toggle-able speed buff that doesn’t require you to give something up would have an appreciable effect on WvW.

/nerdglasses
Technically, you’re giving up a food slot, but I see what you mean. Lots of people don’t even use food/honing items because they forget. In the above scenario, a pair of shared inventory slots would suddenly be a huge boon, since those slots remain on top of inventory. As far as “giving up” something in exchange for +25% speed. . .

I just had a little brainsplosion here. Why not an on-kill sigil that gives +1% speed per stack? It would require combat with critters, or players in wvwpvp, and it takes up a sigil slot that would normally go toward +damage or on-hit/crit effects.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Why can’t asura look like this? If humans, norn, and sylvari can enjoy revealing swimsuits, asura and even charr should enjoy it as well. There needs to be some balance in looks.

What, you want them to look exactly like humans but with slightly different heads? No thanks. If anything, there are too many human-like races already (i.e. Norn are basically big humans and sylvari are green humans with leaf hair). And please, for god’s sake, don’t tell me you want charr to have boobs too.

Edit: in hindsight, I’m actually wondering if this is a troll post or not.

He usually is. :P

Though, I’m more than a little concerned about using Taimi’s head on a stripped down female avatar. That’s.. way too skeezy to not report.

That’s right, I was birthday nookie.

Unique did it for me. To be honest, a unique equip wouldn’t kill them for the extra characters.

I understood it as well, but only because of prior MMO experience. WoW is also more specific(ish) with the term “Unique-Equipped” instead of just “Unique.”

We as players run into it for the first time at the Ascended trinket/ring tier, so I can understand the confusion.

Old enough to remember watching real cartoons after school and on Saturday mornings. To remember watching the original Vampire Hunter D on TV before anime was the “hot” thing. To remember when doing chores and taking care of your pets wasn’t something you did to earn an allowance, but expected of you as a means of learning responsibility.
