Personally, I sometimes try to play condi necro. Try.
I remember I was on a fight on Foefire and I put my wurm on up the high ledge. Not the one near the side points, the one that’s in timbucktoo near the gates of your based. A thief chased after me, so I tried to pressure him off, but he just kept blind spamming me and dodging my transfers. So I teleported away (with almost no health left) and healed back up. Then I saw him teleport up to me, so I spectral walked off the cliff to try to lose him. Then I spectral walked back onto the high ledge AND HE KEPT FOLLOWING ME. I died.
I’ve never seen any class more hunted than the necromancer. If the other team even smells me, they’ll follow me to Lion’s Arch to hunt me down. Not out of fear of my power, but because they know focus will take me down.
Does anyone else have the same issue on necromancer?
Pretty normal experience, I’ve definitely had that happen. I played a match this morning in courtyard where I was moa’d, magnet pulled, slick shoes’d and banished all in a few seconds.
Necros are quite strong, they just need a solid team around them.
Which classes would you put in these sentences?
“______” are quite strong, they just need a solid team around them.
or
“______” are quite strong.
1. mesmers, power rangers, necros
2. war ele engi guard thief are strong on their own.
especially because classes like power rangers mesmers and necros can’t be left freecasting makes them the priority target. it’s not that they are weak…
Are you sure about that? Because it just so happens that all 3 of those classes have weak defensive trait lines so they take offensive traits. They all have easy to interrupt heals and all have plenty of counterplay. Is it really because they are so offensively powerful? Or is it because they really can’t stand up to being focused? You have a much higher chance of getting a kill if you go after these classes than if you go after a cele meta class.
The point is, they are strong offensively but it’s not the full story.
Guys did you know that weak classes saw some improvement with these changes? Let’s all go the forums and make sure Anet knows that we prefer to have some easy kills in pvp! I mean sometimes fighting all these cele classes gets tiring, we deserve a break with necros and rangers!
I’m sorry but no class should be able to kill another player with full health while downstate.
Bads will be bads. It’s a downed state.
Wait… quick question. Probably a dumb one but:
The stability pulses are not stun breaks, right? So if you strip stability and then hit the lich with a 3 second knockback RIGHT before his next stability pulses, he will still stay knocked down the full 3 seconds right?
Correct. The stability comes up but they remain CC’d.
So emerite, here’s how this works. Necro is not in a strong spot overall. You can win a lot of your fights because you’re probably a good player – and – necro is stronger in WvW where there are more bleeds on attacks and life force is super easy to come by. Necro is quite strong in those 1v1s. In pvp, necro doesn’t have the luxury of free life force or those extra bleeds, or the option to kite anywhere without consequence since its conquest.
Then there is PVE, where necro is unwanted.
So any patch that come out that outline the devs disconnections with the class (like 16 traits not working in downed state) or that bring nerfs ( like to foot in the grave, or devaluing boon stripping) is going to be received poorly. And it’s not wrong of any of us to have that reaction, especially if you’ve seen some of the ways necro has gone through changes (dhuumfire, 1/3 downed health, the recent changes to pre pvp match life force gain, taking years to interact with anything in DS, nerfing weapon swaps in DS, nerfing DS cooldown when you run out of DS, etc.).
Personally I’m waiting to see if the specialization brings positive changes, but I’ve been around long enough to see why a necro main would be unhappy with a patch like this.
Overall its a buff to everyone since you don’t need boon removal to remove stab, but FitG got screwed over pretty hard >.>
It depends on how you look at it, it’s a buff to classes like thief or mes that have tons of cc, and even necros who can really bring some control. And it’s a nerf to wvw zergs which frankly I think is in order, since you can’t ever expect to strip stability with its current priority.
Personally I think this change will cause further changes down the line, although I’m not sure how that may happen.
Downed state new meta.
A little embarrassing but I did actually take 50% more damage in downed state on my power assassins build in pvp. It made more of a difference in close 1v1 fights than any other spite minor trait ever seemed to, especially against other glass specs. Oh and the rage that comes from a kill like that… lead to some good times.
it doesn’t care how many stacks the target has. But a lot of these will pulse stability, so the opportunity cost will change.
The elites are the only ones that pulse right?
Seems like you want to cast it at the beginning of the pulse since it will re apply stability in 3 seconds
If you’re packing a ton of boon stripping, you might be able to fear someone multiple times off one elite. But that seems like it would take a big advantage skill wise over someone… Rampage as one will be a huge problem because all 3 boons pulse, so it has automatic cover boons. But it could be possible to fear a plague or lich or tornado a few times via boon stripping.
I think some of these changes hurt boon corruption more than it helps. Sine FITG didn’t get changed, it could be a net loss for necros, but I’ll wait and see.
it doesn’t care how many stacks the target has. But a lot of these will pulse stability, so the opportunity cost will change.
Feels like a nerf to lich. Also foot in the grave if only one stack went from questionable to laughable
Still wondering what this means for flesh wurm. It’ll kill the whole skill if the stunbreak just doesn’t work.
You telling me that you can run directly away from your target and cast CB WHILE RUNNING and it will hit?
Yes!
Guys, there’s no such thing as skills that need facing “at the beginning” and skills that only require facing “at the end” of the cast in this game. If you cast a skill that requires facing, your character will turn to face your target DURING THE CAST. If for any reason you’re not able to turn, the skill will go on 5" cd. There’s only one kind of facing.
Just try a dagger on a training golem. Life Siphon needs facing at the start, Dark Pact at the end of the cast. If you miss those two moments the skills go on full cd without doing anything.
This is consistent with my experience too. I’m pretty sure dark pact can be casted out of range, and as long as you’re in range when it finishes casting, it can still hit.
Make sure you aren’t using pvp weapons, and make sure you have trinkets on. You don’t need to worry about that in pvp but it could be causing this.
We have:
-The most amount of condi transfers
This one is true.

- can easily hit over 100% crit without sacrificing survivabilty.

You have exactly no credibility in this discussion at this point.
Hypothetical? what does that even..we are talking about pvp dude, the point is, is it possible on the class without gear assist? yes, period.
Yes, with a completely unviable build. Unless you run this build, with regularly less than 25% health and have discovered the new meta? If not, don’t throw around hypothetical situations as facts about the class. It’s garbage like that and 2 health bars that keep the perception that necro is strong in a meta that it isn’t a part of.
No one said anything about a build. If you have very low toughness, hitting 25% won’t be the strangest thing to happen. Or do you want to tell me that glass can tank now?
Don’t mistaken viable for optimal. Nos’ terrormancer condi build is viable under different circumstances, against players who don’t know what they are doing, but is it optimal? i hardly think so. He should have gone with rabid if he really wanted to use condis, high hp low toughness is only useful for tanking condis, necros already have a lot of cleanses. I dont see anything in the class that makes up for the lost crit chance and armour when there are no proper escapes.
All my builds between necro and thief have a minimum of 2 stun breaks with at least 2 minor cleanses and 1 major one, and i assume most experienced pvpers build the same way. Against glass terrormancers the build method only serves to irritate. Once the fears are on CD, the player is basically a sitting duck. Imagine playing against a whole team of good players with the same build method, i for sure wouldn’t want to be using meta builds that leave me vulnerable to random rapid fires and mesmer bursts.
1. I’m not mistaking anything here, you’re the one pointing out necro features that don’t exist, let alone in actual gameplay.
2.. Carrion is better, it’s been discussed over and over.
3. The most used build already has energy sigils and 2 teleports. What else should a necro bring? You’re not off base by calling the necro a sitting duck, but it’s not that build. That build does everything it can not to be a sitting duck. What you’re describing is the entire class, hence the point of this thread.

You have no idea if Mesmers do get another main hand or even a second offhand. Please wait before you QQ about it, because this could all be for nothing.
I’ve waited for two years so my faith in ANet is currently at an all-time low. If I don’t remind them about my wishes now, it will be too late and I can suck it up for another two years.
Unless they give us a Mainhand Pistol and a Shield, I call foul. The other classes get twohanded weapons with 5 skills and we get the shaft again with a 2 skill gimmick weapon.
I’m sure that they are aware that Mesmers would want more than a single offhand, and either way, I’m sure the decisions has already been made without your wishes being considered.
Just wait and see, we still know very little about anything with HoT. No meaningful info on any specializations, even with what we do know already, only half of the Revenant skills. We know something of new maps and gamemodes. But certainly not enough to be complaining.
You have no idea if Mesmers do get another main hand or even a second offhand. Please wait before you QQ about it, because this could all be for nothing.
Minions? Why not ask for something universally useful?
Hello Ranger forum!
Recently I leveled and geared my Ranger up to roam around in WvW. I wasn’t sure what to expect… but I’m seriously having a lot of fun with it. But I have some questions and I’m open minded to advice because I’m still figuring out the class.
Right now I roam around in WvW with a very predatory mindset – I work for good positioning, choose my targets that are usually alone, low health, or separated from their zerg, and start picking on them from there. If I’m not in a solid position to engage or it’s a bad numbers situation, I’m usually running until I have an advantage to exploit. But I still have some questions:
1. Pets
Right now I’m running with the Wolf and Drakehound. I’m a fan of the knockdowns, and I like the immob and fear, but the active seems slow to actually activate. Are any of the pet groups faster with their activated skill?
Is there any way to tell when the knockdown is coming, other than timing? A sound, animation, or something on the pet skill-bar?
Are any other pets useful? I know cats can bring some burst (or at least they used to), and I was thinking of grabbing a bear for clearing camps, but the dogs seem OK enough for that.
2. Heal
I’ve been using HaO because it seems to have a good HPS considering how much it heals for and the cooldown, but I see a lot of Rangers using TU. Is TU really that much better? Is Healing Spring anything worth looking at?
3. GS vs. S/X
I’m using GS mostly because I’m pretty familiar with it and it suits what I need (the running part of my post, above), but I hear that sword has potentially better mobility and damage. Is that true? Is the GS auto-attack worth using? Is axe the best offhand for sword for a power ranger? Does my description above seem to fit one or the other more to you?
4. Elites
I’m using RaO right now because I love the fury and stability, especially for stomps. Does entangle have any place here? It seems mostly like I would need to be in close range to make it work, but I’m also pretty sure it eliminates dodging – correct? That could set up a good rapid fire or maul.
Also, here is my trait set up (the armor is all berserker, with some valkyrie. Runes of the Ranger, and air and fire sigils on both weapons).

Any answers are appreciated! Thanks for reading.
Is it really that bad?
I wanted to play a Terrormancer, but from what I’m reading, it would suck. A lot.
It’s weird how Necros are supposed to give up their Defensive Utility to perform their role well (using Signets, for example).
I favour Necromancer over Elem, for example, because of CC/debuffing. I like that concept, but unfortunatly we need to give up on Utility as well for it. We can’t help teammates, we can’t move around capturing places. And then I ask again: Is it really that bad?
If you play casually, no, it’s not that bad. You’ll still be focused but most of the time you should be able to kite and use your ports effectively… but you do need to mind your positioning. If you run into a coordinated team or want to be seriously competitive at all, then it’s not good.
for the most part i dont see whats wrong, lol if a player form any profession gets focused and jumped by 3-4-5 players and killed its ok but if it happens to a necro clearly the necro is underpowered?
True, but a necro has no way to escape that situation. All of our pseudo escapes require pre-emptive actions, like spectral walk that was outlined above (I wish SW chilled and tormented when we ported, for example). We also don’t have any invulns or blocks or stability to combat being focused over and over. Plus, a Necro will be focused early and often due to not having life force to start a match. I mean there’s not even vigor to dodge big attacks; eventually, something will land. Then there’s group utility which isn’t existant, but we aren’t as alone there as some of the rest.
Other classes can and should die when being focused too. But other classes can get away, or stall for some time, or have stability and be fighting back while it happens. If you look at necro skills, most of them benefit greatly from being in someone’s face. But if necros get on point against good teams, it’s a death sentence. The class design just doesn’t work in competitive play, we can be strong if supported, but there are too many weaknesses (no mobility, little sustain, little stability) to exploit, which oRNG did well against Nos.
I can’t speak for EU, but nos is in a league of his own in NA. I only know of 3 other necros that come close, and that’s it. I’m not sure who all these incredible necro pvpers are that could be winning thousands of dollars at pvp but just don’t because they are too chill for it.
^ I agree about the “too chill for it” lol.
…Playing in teams and attending events like the recent WTS is a big commitment. It’s not just something you casually squeeze into your schedule. So to me it is perfectly understandable that some players have no interest in competing at such events, even if the prize pool is attractive.
Also, winning pvp matches is primarily a team effort. Having skilled individual players is definitely an advantage, but ultimately there are more important things at a high level pvp tournament, like map rotation and utility/skill coordination. In regards to the NA pvp scene, I highly doubt that even the smaller player base you have over there could only produce a total of 4 people who can play a decent necro.
Like I said, apparently those are just the ones you’ve heard of. But I’m sure there are many completely unknown necros on NA servers who play at the very same high level as Nos and whoever else you can think of.
And this is not just a matter of statistical probability, but also due to the fact that gw2’s pvp is considerably easier to master than games you have to train 10 hours per day, 24/7, just to stay competitive. So someone who plays gw2 only a couple of hours can easily be as skilled as someone who invests double or tripple the amount of time. And naturally, that means less exposure in terms of popularity.
WTS isn’t the only competitive tournament. Where are all the necros elsewhere? Nos is the one winning weekly tourneys, 2v2s, along with qualifiers and going to WTS finals. He is clearly an outlier to your statistical probability. There aren’t dozens of players that could step in and take his place.
Actually, I’d say that statistically, most of the elite pvpers are playing classes that are, you know, good.
Change is scary.
How you handle your own and teammates downed states is one of the defining layers of being good at pvp at this game. Do you rez your teammate with the enemy around? Can you get back on point before you get downed to contest it? Can you secure a stomp before this guy gets rezzed? All important things to consider.
I can’t speak for EU, but nos is in a league of his own in NA. I only know of 3 other necros that come close, and that’s it. I’m not sure who all these incredible necro pvpers are that could be winning thousands of dollars at pvp but just don’t because they are too chill for it.
Some of you criticizing people who watch streams sound like baby boomers criticizing kids on their cell phones. It’s something that people do, and especially the younger crowd. If you don’t understand it, it doesn’t make it invalid.
The other day, I saw sodapoppin playing around with phataram – it gave Phanta close to 2k viewers, and he’s had tons ever since. The chat is full of people saying they are new to the game.
Whether or not you personally approve of streamers is meaningless. More interest in the game is a good thing, whether that interest comes from Internet streamers, online ads, reviews, or newspaper ads, or heiroglyphics. Times change.
Nos got rekt because he played like kitten, anyone who has seen him play before knows mobility and getting focused isn’t usually a problem for him, he wasn’t expertly porting with Wurm and walk like he normally does so he was never able to build enough life force to matter. Honestly I didn’t see orng focus him particularly hard. He wasn’t the only one who had some bad games either…. phanta and Chaith both also had some bad cames…. pretty sure denshee rekt phanta a few times 1v1 as well as get dropped in the start a little too quickly. I don’t think necros are in a horrible place he just played badly That day.
The guys who have hardly lost a game in months all of a sudden played as badly as you describe on the biggest stage? Or did they get outplayed and it made them look like they played badly?
having watched the PvP tourney, and how abjured lost, does this show that right now in organized 5v5s, necros have no place in PvP?
seeing how the enemy focus and tear down the necro in the finals so easily.Necros have a place in PvP for sure. Only Necros and Mesmers can feasibly handle the boon spam most professions put out, and Mesmers are kinda hard-countered by thieves.
However, The Abjured did have a flaw in the strategy that was exploited, and that is that the Engie/Necro combo, while providing incredible pressure, doesn’t have much peel for the Necro.
This isn’t to bash The Abjured in any way, as every strategy should have a flaw in a balanced game. This was just the first time in a tourney someone figured out the weak link was Nos not having peel.
I don’t think it was ever a secret, but this was the first time they were matched talent-wise with nos in the lineup, and they couldn’t protect him. It speaks volumes to me that they won with 2 engineers and lost when they added a necro. Not that they would have won in any regard, but it’s just an obvious observation.
Well necro is better in real fights.
Elaborate. Do you mean zergefests as real fights?
So a friends list and a block list that affects your matchmaking.
I think the reason this isn’t done is because you can really alter your matchmaking by abusing these things.
So necro and mesmer need to be babysat, and other classes don’t, and that’s ok? You just need to devote a whole team effort to keep them alive, something that is not true of the meta classes at all.
Nah, its enough if they are just a good player facing a not as good player.
If these three where meta classes, everyone would just cry about how the Warrior, Thief and Guardian sucks and need buffing. Its pointless.
Yes, let’s just accept the status quo. Great point.
buffed isn’t necessarily the right word here, and no, everything isn’t fine
in regards to rangers: shouts, spirits, traps, pets, 80% of its traits, and quite a few of its weapon skills are outright bad and need reworked or replaced.
i’m not experienced enough with mesmers or necromancers to comment on what needs changed, but it’s quite evident they need something to give them the edge they currently lack at higher levels of play(even if i personally believe necromancers to be one of the most frustrating 1v1s in the game, it’s clear after watching nos yesterday that something is missing).
Necro is a great class. They just need to be played a certain way, and if the enemy doesn’t allow that, then like every profession, it can get nullified.
Mesmer and Necro just come with a long list of requirements, when met, they’re a force to be reckoned with – the most lethal of killers. Consistency is all that’s lacking, buffing would be extremely complicated.
Buff/Change non-longbow Ranger weapons. Some lacking depth/plays, often ignorable, sporadic, and generic. A little more reward and risk would be better, to avoid that feeling of flinging the same instant projectile with 4 different tool tips.
So necro and mesmer need to be babysat, and other classes don’t, and that’s ok? You just need to devote a whole team effort to keep them alive, something that is not true of the meta classes at all.
Death Shroud reduces all direct damage taken by 50% so… it does.
The reason other professions do better is because they have multiple ways of reducing damage taken to nothing.
- that can scale with multiple enemies.
I think that DS’s scaling is actually why necros rely on their teammates so much. You need to be able to be getting kills while you kite, and be sure to hold points while you rotate and hopefully use your sizable DS pool to overwhelm smaller fights.
I use carrion because my build has more focus on life force gain, and the vitality means every percent of life force is more valuable. I could see rabid working if you built for it.
For PVE, there are no mega servers so most every map is as populated as can be. In wvw, there haven’t been any changes. As far as skills, there have been a lot of changes since you left, but generally speaking only really death shroud has changed (has a fifth skill and you can interact with things), spectral wall applies fear instead of vulnerability, and we have some new GM traits you should check out. A lot of other changes but many of them are smaller. Oh and putrid Mark and corrupt boon aren’t the same
So what stops all Mesmers from voting no thieves, or all engineers to vote no necromancers, or all thieves voting no meditation guardians? Not sure this really works as an idea.
That depends on how the voting is handles. If a random player chooses for the whole team, he may ban a direct counter to his class and attempt to carry the team or ban a meta build to help the whole team. The concept works for MOBAs fairly well.
Don’t mobas have dozens of different options for characters, with set skills? I mean if you ban someone’s class or spec, you may isolate a player.
Also directly counters the whole play how you want to play thing. Doesn’t always work in practice but this is literally saying you can’t play how you might want to.
Would be really amazing, except wurm would almost have to be placed at your current location for that to happen, instead of being a ranged placement.
Also notable that – allegedly – teleport spots have been changed for HoT, according to a hearsay post in the PvP section.
I recently had my “omg necro is weak I need to learn a new profession” meltdown that I have about once every couple months. I always come back. I think this is probably something most of us that have been around for awhile go through, I think it’s normal to get down on the weaknesses of the class sometimes.
So what stops all Mesmers from voting no thieves, or all engineers to vote no necromancers, or all thieves voting no meditation guardians? Not sure this really works as an idea.
I was under the impression that necromancers were not getting the GS….the specialization class that splits off from necromancers are getting the GS. The information given was that the specialization would lose somethings to get somethings. Similar to rangers and druids. I’m assuming maybe dagger is one of the things the specialization class gives up to get the GS?
Yes the specialisation is getting the greatsword. Forgive us for calling it necro. Seeing as we dont know the name of the spec and we know that specs will still mostly be their base class.
Like i said before. Losing the dagger for GS would totally kill the classes viability in PvE. We would lose our ability to proc energy sigils without totally tanking our DPS. If something like that happens i may be tempted to delete my necro for that reason aswell.
Think of it this way. Currently we have 3 melee sets because we have 3 different offhands. If we suddenly lose our dagger to get a two handed melee weapon. We suddenly only have one melee option. That kills a lot of choice for the class. It prevents swap sigil procs while staying on melee weapons. No other class has only one melee set. The game is heavily melee focused. If anet are interested in helping the necro in PvE they wont remove the dagger mainhand. Id be seriously kittened off if they do something that stupid though.
Well the thing is they actually CAN NOT take any weapon from us without leaving us kittened over, except maybe offhand dagger. Take dagger, we only have one melee set, take axe, we have no ranged power weapon (i know axe sucks kitten , but still), they cannot take Scepter because thats our Condi-Spam-Weapon, they cannot take Staff because that is our only 1200-range + AE + “hybrid” option… So the only thing they could take away is an offhand, and i dare say OH Dagger is -propably- the least useful. If not traited for yada yada yada. Never used Dagger OH since pre-release , so i wouldn’t know.
They could still take staff away. Not that they should, but they could. Being the only hybrid and 1200 range weapon doesn’t preclude it as an option.
If you play on off peak hours you could also be a lot more likely to have a bad experience due to a smaller amount of players online.
But I soloQ all the time and I still have fun. There are bad days, but good ones too.
Even though it’s similar to the guardian GS 5 skill, I’d love a short-ish range AOE taunt that is channeled and corrupts boons. Awesome synergy with wells, especially well of corruption. I would love that as an ability.
Option 3: GS AA is equal to dagger AA. But it will likely cleave and have other skills, where dagger/x will bring something else to the table. It’s not necessarily so black and white.
With that being said, one of you guys should post a video showing the merit of wurm as well as how to use it. That would be much appreciated!
There is a video floating around of all the places you can port. I think I it’s from a thief perspective but it still applies for wurm. The only map it doesn’t feel quite as dominant (to me) is Niflhel because it doesn’t have as dramatic of escapes, but khylo, legacy and temple all have great spots for ports.
I’m still learning to use it, and when I get lazy and don’t pre-place it, it always seems bad in that moment – the cast time is too long to make an escape if it isn’t prepared. But when you’re using your ports in the right moments, it’s really a lot of fun.
If this was something that could be exploited, it would happen far more often. It’s not some anti necro conspiracy. I know I’ve felt like I was knocked out of DS, but it hasn’t happened in a long time and I have no way of knowing if I double tapped my keybind or not.
Don’t run flesh worm. Flesh worm is a horrible skill.
You’re wrong.
Agreed. Flesh wurm saved me multiple times the last time I played, and that was in one pvp match.
Flesh wurm seems bad when you aren’t prepared to use it or when you don’t know what it’s truly capable of. But once you learn it’s an entirely different experience on necro.
Those people likely aren’t reading the forums. It sounds like you did your best to address it.
to be honest, necros could use a global reduction on a lot of their weapon and utility skills. its horrendous
This, also our cooldowns are way long, especially on staff.
