Because it works, and they can.
I was discussing this the other day; look closely at how they run on all fours; when they land on their hands they put all the weight of their (very significant!) mass through their wrists; that’s going to cause joint damage and early arthritis! ;p

Guardian NPCs such as logan and Dinky often pull their weight thanks to the fact they actually have AoE buffs and barrier skills they utilise, so instead of wasting their time doing no damage and dying a lot, they stick to protecting.

Arenanet could find the cure for cancer, and there’d be a vocal minority who’s complain they could’ve better spent their time curing AIDS and/or world hunger
I’m beginning to think in future arenanet should stop bending so far backwards to please us because it’s a fools errand and instead stick to their original plans

feedback and null field are great tools, but can be better accomplished by other professions. Guardians can reflect/block projectiles all day long – A guildy of mine takes great pride in that. They can also wipe out conditions, but you know what does that way better?
You’re committing the same fallacy many of the people who come to the forum to whine about mesmers commit.
Guardians can reflect almost as well as a mesmer, OR they can wipe out conditions. You can’t fit the utilities to do both in to the same build at the same time. You’re taking a cross section of all possible guardian builds and claiming they can do this -simultaneously_ without having to make choices in their spec.
But I know that with any other class I’ll do much better. I still think that the better players play mes. But they have to work harder at it. Mesmer is tough to play well. Why bother?
If you want all the power but no challenge then yes, rolling another class is advisable. But some folks just like a challenge for the sake of a challenge, setting up a complex combo chain and snapping the trap shut on the poor fool so hard his head explodes… it’s satisfying.
But if satisfaction for you is simply big numbers, then yeah you’re probably better off rolling a warrior for your dose of 23k kill shots.

When they introduce ogres as a playable race, it’ll be one of their racial elites. Sort’ve like elementalist’s firey greatsword; but more awesome

Cornering the market and jacking the price sky high is one thing; getting people to pay that price is another.
Big calculated risk that the price the players start buying again will be a price that exceeds taxes, especially since abyss was already like 7-9 gold

Unfortunatly you can’t truly leverage melee builds til around 60, at that point you can unlock illusory persona which totally changes the game (Since you can now use diversion and distortion without clones up, giving you a snap evasion and interuppt, as well as drasticlly boosting your shatter damage).
Even so; sword is one of our best DPS weapons and rolling melee on a mesmer is no gimmick

Intresting video.
There’s case for and against GS being a foo strategy – iZerker is our most reliable ranged AoE attack, iWarden can’t reposition itself, blurred frenzy and mind wrack are best utilised at melee range.
I would argue that GS is a “learner’s weapon” it has a high output for low skill, and you seldom see it in the hands of a veteran player. But it does offer some unique utilities (Ranged snare, most reliable ranged AoE) that no other mesmer weapon presents.
Ultimately what the devs have done to GS isn’t to “balance” it to encourage people to seek new strategies they outright broke the associated phantasm; GS is a good mesmer learners weapon but in it’s current state not even learners need use it.

Wow. I didn’t get to go but I would have liked to see the event more than a chest— You realize how you sound here?
The chest was the only good part of the entire 3 day event
I do hope Arenanet doesn’t take messages like this too seriously. People joke that MMos devolve into skinner boxes but to hear some people they literally want a skinner box.

Eesh… this is going to be a trading post headache this week, if they mail duplicates to some players but not others; the players who didn’t get duplicates will complain. if they mail a chest to EVERYONE, then the glut in precursors and exotics will destroy some of the markets (Though I can see ways to leverage it too to my advantage)
Either way; turbulent days ahead :p
Garnished Toast
Stuff in Southsun drop them. Sharks do, for sure, and there’s dozens of those things along the south side of the island.
I don’t think that’s the cause of this glut; at least, not players farming them. I’ll put my money on bots, not many people go swimming if they can help it, swimming bots would draw even less attention than land based bots.

So I see John Smith edited what he said.
Not cool again.
I appreciate the gesture of you guys trying to compensate us, but this isn’t really working out. Is there going to be a redo for those of us lead astray from opening these on a low level character?
Doubtful. It cuts both ways too; for every guy who opens the chest on his lowbie toon by accident, there may well be lowbies who did the karka event at like level 40, but in the weeks since the event are now 80; would they have to give back their goodies? :p
The fact they gave people a second chance at all is unprescedented

edit looks like someone is also trying to manipulate the market:
I don’t think that’s market manipulation, that’s more likely caused by supply depletion. Supply reached a lowest point around that period but there is no corresponding increase in demand and you might expect to see in a manipulation attempt.
What happens is when an item is first listed people ask silly prices. Those silly prices fairly quickly get more realistic as people realise it’ll never sell at those prices. A buffer forms as large volumes build up more tightly around the optimum value; when demand rises this buffer soaks up most of the demand.
But supply Vs demand remains low for an extended period, the buffer of “cheap” goods burns through, and next in line are the increasingly silly prices, causing a sharp spike in price as desperate people pay way over the odds to obtain the needed materials, during this period the new benchmark value can resettle in a new position.
The more you know!

I should point out that teleport costs are a major gold sink. If you reduce the size of sinks, then you increase the rate of inflation.
Just making sure people know the score; in exchange for cheaper travel you decrease the value of gold and will have to farm a little bit harder to avoid being left behind in the rat race
Garnished Toast
Pretty sure glyphic is the de-facto largest pistol skin (or it’s sister, dark asuran which is basically the same but in inquest colours). Which is nice because as the poster above said, that happens to be the asuran racial skin

Don’t forget that warriors do by far the most damage of any class.
Warriors damage is relatively avoidable in PvP which is why you don’t see them quite so much (Thief and mesmer’s burst combos mixed with copious controls make them better PvP’rs), but in PvE the AI isn’t exactly smart and will happily stand there and take a full hundred blades right in the face without even needing to immobilise it.
Warriors damage is also relatively effort-free. Hundred blades can easily dish out 18k+ to all nearby foes with 1 button press, to do the same thing a mesmer has to chain together at least 9 different skills, and then snap shut the trap hopefully without being countered.

Strangly on my engineer I was of the conclusion that the armour is too heaviy themed towards thieves, with most my medium options making me look like a rogue
Garnished Toast
Simple example: I got my 100 lodestones around 2 weeks ago for 120g, now it’s 300g, the very same mats that I sell to get my gold didn’t change in prices, yet another high end item did.
If by chance it was the work of a power trader, then do tell me how this didn’t affect the market?
You answered your own question. Highlighted for clarity.
What you’re looking at is market fluctuation, not inflation. Due to a reduction in supply/rise in demand/possible market manipulation the value of one particular group of items has doubled yet the other markets remained essentially the same.
Garnished Toast
Ok, I get the idea that you are one. No need to break it down to me my dear friend.
Well of course I am, hat’s why I know anything about the subject.
First you say “If you stopped all gold entering the system, you’d actually experience deflation as taxes slowly drains the gold in circulation” admitting that power traders contribute to the gold ciruculation.
Don’t mix up circulating gold, with adding gold to circulation.
Inflation occurs when the amount of gold in circulation increases, the effective value of gold therefore decreases. But traders do not create gold, merely move it from A to B. That’s not to say trading has no effect on inflation, inflation is more complex than simply “gold in, gold out”, but no trader generates gold and by that virtue alone cannot be responsible for inflation beyond a certain threshold.
Also, consider this – the rate of making gold right now DID NOT change compared to what it was before and after the inflation, which means…
Player A made 2g a day before inflation.
A month later Player A still makes 2g a day after inflation.
It’s a good question “Where has the extra gold come from” – With the bots out the way the T5 and T6 fine materials market has bounced back up, and that means people can now get a decent bundle of pay for each item (This isn’t inflation, this is a market shift).
I think what’s happened is that with the improvements in T5/T6 value, and the advent of ascended gear, we’ve seen a lot of the rich players who were previously hoarding gold, putting that gold back into the economy in the form of buying lodestones and T6 mats for getting their legends and ascended, again this isn’t “new gold” but rather gold that had been temporarily held outside of the economy and had prevented past inflation taking it’s course

Is that what the accent is meant to be?

Garnished Toast
No no, it’s just power traders that are “speeding up the supply / demand process”.
We would’ve reached this inflation in 2014, but they sped it up, come on just a little tiny teensy bit.
Power traders are a gold sink
Power traders do not generate gold, they merely transfer it from A to B, buying low (From their pocket) and selling high (From other peoples pocket), with a 15% tax slapped on top, so 15% of the gold involved in the transaction vanishes into thin air
If you stopped all gold entering the system, you’d actually experience deflation as taxes slowly drains the gold in circulation. People love to blame the traders for all their woes, but traders arn’t the ones causing inflation.
Garnished Toast
I tried many times to explain the basics of how the trading post, gold sinks, gems, value of gold and cost of legends/ascended are all closely linked and backed it up with copious charts and evidence to support it – but some people are just hell bent on believing that this is all a big scam on arenanet’s part them from their hard earned money and they can “fix it” with the wave of a wand.
What you’re saying here is entirely true and important but I don’t think you’ll have much luck getting the message to sink in.
When life gives you loonys, sell tinfoil hats.

Tooltip said it gave distortion leading people to expect traits that effect distortion to work with it. They don’t. Now the tooltip reflects what the skill really does.
I still think they intended it too and decided it’d be easier to call the bug a feature and let it slide. Seems kind’ve pointless a trait that gives you 1-4 second reflection on a 45-60 second cooldown, when you are already immortal
Garnished Toast
Masterful reflection never worked on blurred frenzy. Ever. So it is just a text change.
This. I was sad to find distort from blurred frenzy didn’t trigger masterful reflection. I had hoped it was a bug but, when it comes to arenanet the best way to fix a bug, is to relabel it a feature
Garnished Toast
IIRC iDeulist was getting a 100% combo finisher for every shot instead 20% per shot like other muli-shot finishers
I can confirm this, reliably stacking 8 confusion every summon, never more or less – if it were only 20% then it should average around 2, sometimes less sometimes more.
Did they at least fix zerker or was this update purely to nerf mesmer?
Garnished Toast
I played Hot join for an hour today over 3 different server both teams had at least 2 Mesmers at all times, sometimes more.
sPvP != WvW, Solo PvE, Dungeon PvE
The complaint is that NPC’s with their perfect reflexes turn around and one-shot and that in the mass crossfire of WvW, phantasms get tagged.
In an sPvP setting with fewer players and more focus, phantasms may well survive to attack, but don’t try and tell me Mesmer’s phantasms don’t need work because “lol sPvP”
Garnished Toast
Maybe slow, high-risk spike damage is critical to the mesmer play experience, but I bet many players would be happy to see their phantasms a little more mobile and doing half-to-a-third the damage on each attack if they did those attacks two-to-three times as often! iZerker is so dang slow to act (even before the patch) I’m constantly wondering if the script hung…
Intresting you mention this; in GW1 “phantasms” (hex) dealt constant damage over their entire duration, until shattered, timed out or otherwise stripped.
Garnished Toast
It could be argued that all thieves do is backstab and stealth, all elementalists do is rain AoE and all rangers do is suck.
The fact the mesmer is such an immense force multiplier is still not to be balked at
Garnished Toast
Will ANet refund the people who dropped hundreds of gold on Precursors before the Lost Shores chest was revealed to drop them? I’m willing to bet all of my GW2 savings (which isn’t that much, so don’t get excited :P) that the answer is “No”.
Little different. Precursor price is set by the players, T3 price is set by arenanet. Suddenly deciding “You know what… have T3 armour for free! – Our compliments” would enrage a lot of people, maybe even see people quit.
Garnished Toast
Wow, the "kitten you, got mine, " is strong in here.
…
Cultural armor should go for karma because cultural weapons do. Consistency.
And the jelly is strong with this one. Seems to be swings and roundabouts… lets say it now goes for karma. What do you propose they do about the thousands of people who’ve spent hard earned gold on it.
T3 armour serves as a massive gold sink, it takes lots of gold out the economy and thus mitigates the rate of inflation. if you take away the gold sink the value of gold decreases and people start complaining about rampant inflation.
If you refund all the gold taken out the system to date – inflation jumps overnight. If you don’t refund the gold, thousands of players ragequit and write scathing articles about arenanet’s behaviour.
The situation is lose/lose if arenanet does as you suggest
Garnished Toast

I was a bit wary at first – but it’s a good and very honest article, I can associate with what he’s saying a lot; arenanet should take notes of the message

But you play 3 hours max per day. He plays 20 minutes!
You have to draw a line somewhere.
If you tune the game so people who play 20 minutes a day can get all the nice things; people who play 3 hours a day will achieve everything the game has to offer and get bored within a week.
Garnished Toast
Why would you pick power over precision if you want a tank spec? Vigor on crit is an excellent tank talent. By comparison there is really not much way +power helps a tank spec.
You have a good point i overlooked that detail.
Garnished Toast
Inspiration is one of the trees I invest most frequently into.
I don’t usually take it all the way to 30 simply because the grandmaster traits are underwhelming when i have better stuff to sink those into, but 20 is common.
The minor traits arn’t to be sniffed at, even on a shatter build if you let your phantasm get off their opening attack then +15% damage is not a small amount across a full rotation, and the extra vitality and healing helps with survivability but the real meat of it is the majors.
Glamours – Inspiration has the glamour cooldown boost and glamour duration boost – glamours are fantastic skills whether solo or in a team; that in turn has a good synergy with shatter builds if you opt to take dazzling glamours so your glamours also blind enemies.
Condition removal is something people overlook as it’s not a big deal in solo overworld play, but in dungeons and PvP it matters a lot. Menders purity has a great synergy with mesmer’s short healing cooldowns and means you can drop taking dedicated condition remover utility in most situations.
Warden’s Feedback – The focus is an AMAZING offhand for almost every facet of PvE; it has AoE damage, pull, interupt, snare, deflection and swiftness all packed into a single tool, taking the trait further adds 2 reflects and slashes 20% off the cooldowns – this is probably my favourite trait on the entire class; or, maybe second favourite after illusory persona.
Garnished Toast
Since the improvements to phantasmal regeneration and stuff playing a tanky mesmer is more viable than ever since now you can reliably maintain regen (With significant protection uptime), if you wanted take tankyness to a ridiculous extreme then packing power without precision might well be a fun idea.
Garnished Toast
Different playstyles should be viable, the only one here seems to be to either play the TP or run certain other efficient ways again and again.
Not the “adventure” and “fun” I perceived from the manifesto.
Not true.
All players have multiple options for getting gearred in exotics – karma, crafting, TP, random drops, dungeons, WvW. Literally there’s no reason any given person can’t find a way to get geared regardless of their situation; there’s your equality.
But a PvE’r can’t unlock PvP gear without actually PvPing. You can’t get WvW tokens without doing WvW, you can’t get a gift of exploration without exploring nor can you get dungeon prestige skins without beating the relevant dungeons; some things are not made to be equal, prestige titles and armour are a way of wearing your achievements on your sleeve and each set of armour; be it WvW, Ascalon catacombs or T3 cultural have different criteria for earning it.
