Not going to happen. Especially with HoT just out. Even though they’re using megaservers and having named servers is completely irrelevant to 2/3 of the game modes removing any would be a sign that the game is not doing well, and overall that’s not the case. Anet needs to find a solution to undo the damage to WvW brought on by megaservers.
Condition Duration buffs of that magnitude did not promote healthy gameplay from either the offensive or defensive end.
Condition duration worked into the gear stat budget is where it should’ve been. It was way too powerful for a food buff.
It’s amusing. The other month people were up in arms because Mike O’Brien insinuated that very few people played the WvW game mode exclusively. Now when you ask where all the WvW players are, you’ll be told “they’re in PvE.” Guess he was right afterall.
Sad but true.
I don’t fault WvW players for playing seasonal content (Halloween), farming to work on their Guild Halls, or even checking out the new PvE zones (especially since Notarized Scrolls have been temporarily removed). I do however fault the WvW players who aren’t playing WvW for any reason aside from those listed above (forgive me if I missed another legitimate reason). You’re only hurting your own game mode.
I’m sure Mike O’Brien is sitting in an oversized supervillain chair somewhere looking at these skewed WvW/PvE population numbers and saying “I told you so.” Congrats Mike. You created a scenario to verify your BS statement, and the WvW pop is too busy whining to even try to prove you wrong.
Haven’t seen a build like that for WvW. Might wanna take a look at Wolfineer and/or Metabattle to get some ideas.
Care to link your current condi build?
Hey guys I am coming back for this expansion after a 3 year break. I had afew questions on engineers in PVP.
Back in the day I would run as a tankish engineer using prybar, healing, and pistol shield tactics to run into groups and cause mayham. Can engineers still run this role? Or have they changed to a more DPS class?
And what about for PVE? Im not planning on doing too much endgame PVE, but if its good i might do alot
There’s been a lot of changes, but yea, you can certainly still play a similar role, although the most popular build for that uses rifle (build cited here: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Engineer_-_Soldier_Rifle)
With Scrapper coming out, there will likely be even more room to fill a tanky role in PvP. Several players in the last beta found that a hammer Scrapper build worked well and had a lot of sustain.
P.s. Welcome back. =)
Unless I was wrong (in which case ignore this post) there are no current builds, especially not Soldier Rifle, like what the OP described.
The build in questions is probably something akin to this…
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/The-TANKCAT-build-Prybar-some-faces/first
I think days before an expansion brings a flood of new players and reinvigorate many old players to return and fill up servers, is the worst time possible to have this discussion. This is likely something that need to wait until a few moths to see how the population influx effects server populations.
This.
And I’m in T8 NA.

Sounds like you used to run Tankcat or a variant. That was a fun build while it lasted but its been dead for a long time. There’s a build thread (probably buried by now) here that you might want to look at. Also wolfineer is a good resource.
Which game mode? PvE/PvP/WvW
Thanks everyone for the help. It’s unfortunate that we’re forced to forego our progress (5 level 27s is not something I want to go through again) to get a good WvW experience.
I hope anet will do something about this. Merging servers under an “alliance” (say, Eredon Terrace, Gates of Madness, and some others form the “Crimson” team) until there’s a sufficient constant activity in WvW would make it a lot more fun.
Switching servers costs too much money. Frankly, I think it should be free. But then, I have many issues with the business model as it is.
Does Anet actually read feedback? Or should I not even bother posting about my issues as suggestions? I’m really quite sick of posting thorough feedback only for it to be ignored, as it has on plenty of other game forums.
Coming from another long time T8er (DR), I’d say stick it out. And in the mean time finish leveling your characters, since you’ve expressed no desire to delete all your toons to get a free transfer, and learn your’s and other professions as well as the mechanics of WvW.
A lot of WvW players are taking a hiatus pre-HoT largely due to burn out from stale (and at times severely outnumbered) match-ups, and we really don’t know what kind of population changes will come with HoT. So you should see more players in WvW post HoT launch (at the least people returning from hiatus). In the mean time try and find a WvW guild on ET, or at least a PvX guild based on ET.
Anet won’t be merging servers as it’s an admission of low population. Also if you’ll notice the population scale doesn’t go below “Medium” which anyone in T8 knows kitten well is a face-saving crock at least as far as WvW is concerned (EoTM doesn’t count).
I know I linked a blog discussing keybinds, but my personal ones are not nearly that extreme (relocating WASD) and for the most part are just about remapping keys 6-0 and ditching keyboard turning.
Movement: WASD (forward, strafe left, back, right strafe) no keyboard turning
Profession: F1-F5
Weapon Skills: 1-5
Weapon Swap: `
Heal: Q
Utilities: Z,X,C
Elite: E
Dodge: V
Stomp/Rez: F
About Face: R
Take Target: T (Call Target ctrl-T)
Stow Weapon: Middle Mouse
Auto Run: Mouse 4
Target Nearest: Mouse 5/Tab
I think that’s it as far as combat would be concerned.
Dated but nonetheless helpful.
http://taugrim.com/2012/06/27/guide-to-guild-wars-2-keybinds/
Well the harp is in C major according to the wiki and guitar frets are half steps IIRC so do with that what you will.
Since all classes can be ranged how are you forced to melee on any of em?
1. In many cases melee weapons out-damage ranged.
2. Staying at range you won’t benefit from blasted fields.
3. Concerning PvP & WvW if an opponent gets in your face with enough gap closers and CC they can make it pretty hard for you not to melee.
Unless something changes drastically in HoT my thoughts are that you need to reassess how you want to approach GW2, and read up on GW2 combat (as compared to other MMOs).
(precursor…not upset but I think I am not being clear with what I am seeking so want to clear it up…hopefully)
SNIP
It wasn’t explicitly stated in the OP that you were exclusively looking to play PvE, so I’m going to suggest looking into WvW. Especially since you weren’t happy in dungeons, and since not having played betas I can’t say you won’t have the same feelings towards raids. There’s a lot more room for ranged specs there. That being said there really isn’t any profession in any game mode (short of open world PvE) that’s simple to the point where minimal weapon swaps and key-presses are effective, but at least there’s room for ranged dps.
Your request of " I want to be is RANGED and useful via dps/lots of support/ or healing." screams staff Elementalist. So if WvW isn’t out of the question give it a shot. Ele is one of the more complicated professions, but very rewarding once you’ve gotten proficient.
Took almost 3 years for the hobosack whiners to get their wish, so this could be a possibility somewhere around Christmas 2018.
Unless something changes drastically in HoT my thoughts are that you need to reassess how you want to approach GW2, and read up on GW2 combat (as compared to other MMOs).
Engineer Rifle auto and net shot have 1200 range, but the heavy hitters are all most effective at point blank range and not usable beyond 600-800 (depending on skill). And Mortar is 1500 range. Useful for fields, but you don’t want to be camping it.
No matter what you play being at range puts you at a disadvantage since you won’t be benefiting from Blasts on Fire Fields.
It should be the option/alt key. But then again I haven’t used a Mac in a few years and never with a non-apple keyboard.
It would be nice if the gyros did not need AI and just circled tightly around the Scrapper giving their effect in an AOE, sadly that is not the world we live in.
this
Unfortunately
So make another character and try out another profession you think you might enjoy more, and test it out in PvP to get a feel for max level. No one here will able to tell you which you will find most enjoyable.
No dual-classing, btw.
I run a Juggernaut HGH build in WvW, but for Celestial I’d probably swap Juggernaut for Incendiary Powder at a minimum.
I don’t PvP much, but I’d probably start out with something like this and go from there.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFAUlUUhatY9Vw6KQ7FLsFFYIuBBQYKeRvmYHVFPBA-TJRHwAFeAAAuAAk2f4YZAA
Yes you can change the 3 specializations you’re currently using any time as long as you’re out of combat, but No you cannot get your Hero Points back. Don’t worry though because you will accumulate enough Hero Points to unlock everything eventually.
Well….like you said, anything could work really but I would probably just make a ranger as well so that the two of us could simply stay at range and pew pew pew while our pets did all the aggro’ing. It would also make for a good competition as to see who is the better ranger while you can both explore different builds and exchange “notes” about what works well and what doesn’t. Just my thoughts.
Have fun trying to compliment a LB Ranger with anything but another LB Ranger. By the time you get a shot off with any other weapon the mob is half dead and/or being knocked out of range.
As far as my recommendation it’ll boil down to more about playing complimentary specs than complimentary professions. And more importantly play what you want. Don’t pick something just because it’ll compliment your brother’s spec better.
Suggestions:
Hammer skills
- Hammer #1: Add burning to third chain.
NO!
It adds nothing, and would likely have to be at the cost of a Vuln/Might stack.
I like this. Instead of getting a whole new set of utilities you just re-purpose Kits (while staying on theme), and add a “Weapon Swap”. I would almost argue that this Elite Spec shouldn’t get a new weapon since all base Engi weapons would be getting a second set of abilities.
I think it should be clear to anyone who has tried Scrapper that its in an Alpha state design-wise and that something else existed VERY late into development of HoT and got removed/reworked at the last minute.
Think back to the reveal stream where they DIDNT EVEN SHOW the class mechanic of Scrapper or to the initial reveal trailer where the G(yro)arbage floated around the Engineer’s head. My guess is at during the livestream reveal Function G(yro)arbage wasn’t in the game yet and only the placeholder “Gyro Smash” text existed. This whole thing stinks of poor project management.
I’m of the opinion that nothing (or very little) beyond the cinematic clip in the trailer, which the Scrapper doesn’t quite jive with, existed until VERY late into development.
Something along these lines was brought up a while back. Some time around when “population changes” started being discussed. Megaservers (and EotM) did a lot more damage to WvW than Anet probably thought at the time, but they’ve done little to nothing to fix it.
I’m all for a mechanism whereby WvWers could notify others on their server that help was needed.
So sorta like the profession art for the Engineer? I’m for it. Dude looks like he has exactly what you’re describing.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/engineer/
We’ll probably get it sometime around when Warriors get 2-handed axes as pictured in their profession art.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/warrior/
As a consequence why the AI?
Considering how much use the other AI utilities are getting I’m really not sure why. Only thing I can come up with is they had to do Gyros (as seen in the HoT trailer) and the only wait to do it working within whatever limitations the game engine has was AI minions. Or the only way to get it done on time was to borrow code from other AI abilities like Spirit Weapons, which nobody uses. They could’ve perhaps had the visual aspect emulate Miniatures instead and used a proper fuel system which was refilled by using Tollbelt skills, but what do I know.
Why not glyphs mechanic?
Because Glyphs require a phase change mechanic like Attunements or Celestial Avatar. Considering how ingrained the Toolbelt is to how Engineer functions (and the fact that it already spans F1-F5) we will probably never see a true profession mechanic change like some of the other profs got.
Why not signets mechanic?
Good question. IMHO this was the shoe-in for what Gyros would most closely emulate. Especially since we’re the only pre-HoT profession without them. Could’ve easily been done, but the trick would have been how to deal with the visual of the Gyro. Emulating Miniatures would be my proposal.
Why not mantra mechanic?
This would’ve been my #2 suggestion. See my comments on Signets.
Why not facet mechanic?
Haven’t played Rev, so I can’t comment on this one.
And I agree Function Gyro is pretty poor as far as bringing a unique identity.
It would really be helpful if we had more to go on than " I would like to add to the group the most I can".
Which MMOs have you played before?
Which class/profession did you prefer?
What did/didn’t you like about any play styles you may have encountered in other MMOs?
But for now pick something you like the concept of and start playing. Get into some PvP (even just screwing around in the lobby on NPCs) and try out every profession you think you might like. In GW2 PvP everyone is level 80 and uses normalized Amulets instead of full gear sets so you should be able to get a feel for how things will play.
-113% condi dmg to imob chill and cripple nice -20 fromhoelbrak -40 from food -33% from mehca l;egs and -20 from adaptive armor
Unless it’s bugged and affecting duration instead of damage, Adaptive Armor should not be contributing to condition duration reduction.
As far as PvE and PvP goes which server you are on is irrelevant due to megaservers.
You might want to take a look at something like this to see what the diff WvW tiers look like at any given moment.
http://coveragewars2.com/timezone/?tab=ppt
I’m gonna second Engi. Their only weapons atm may be ranged weapons, but but they’re most effective at point blank range. Think shotgun instead of rifle, but you can kite if need be.
There are plenty of melee options in kits (Bomb Kit, Flamethrower, Toolkit) and come HoT Scrappers can use Hammers.
To accomplish your first suggestion you’d need to bring the PvP build system over to WvW. It’s been brought up plenty of times, but I’m pretty sure it’s not going to happen.
Because they stack.
Rapid Regeneration (Swiftness): 105 +
Rapid Regeneration (Super Speed): 470 +
Backpack Regenerator: 117 +
Regeneration: 130
= 822HPS base
From the Specializations Part 2 news article.
“These are the brand-new level-80 specializations that will begin to introduce new weapons, mechanics, skills, and traits to existing professions in Heart of Thorns.”
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/specializations-part-two-reward-tracks-and-elite-specializations/
What’s not to like? It’s Mad Max meets Batteries Not Included.
Not sure why you need Purge Gyro to outclass HT when they’re not competing for a slot.
If Function Gyro was named anything else I could possibly entertain the idea of it being limited to only stomp/rezz, but its not. So until the livestream tells us otherwise I’m going to be of the opinion that as the name dictates our Function Gyro can interact with anything you’d press F for.
So PvEers out there please relax. The devs have clearly stated that all GW2 players are PvEers first and PvP/WvW players second so I’d find it real hard to believe they’d have an Elite spec mechanic that will for the most part only be used in PvP/WvW.
Think you need to rethink a bit. There are no healers in this game and if you come in to it presenting your self as a healer and will stay on water through a dungeon, people will go awkward with you. Elementalist are not healers. They are a awsome class with lots of support but they also do good damage and cc, so no ele should focus on healing. They can support with water fields, but those are useless unless noone blasts them, and even so a ele should only briefly pass the wateratunament if it really really is needed and switch again asap.
So when you decide what class to pick dont make the choice out of a role you have in mind, make it from what you prefer playing. If you die to fast then you should rather focus on why this is and fix the build, check with other within the same class, what they do when under heavy fire, what they use and how they get away.
The meta battle webside explain each build very well and you can pick up advice there that works even if you don’t exactly pick the build you read up about. http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki
How factual is this though? Is this just a mentality thing? Why cant someone play mostly support with some light dps and cc?
I think you need to read up on GW2 combat.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combat
More specifically the GW2 rolls of damage, support, and control.
You can’t sit back and cast targeted (don’t exist) or AE heals on players while doing minimal if any damage and expect that to be a meaningful contribution. Not only that, but whatever contribution you do make is null if you haven’t done enough damage to warrant getting a drop/reward since that’s how participation is calculated AFAIK.
I think the thing you may be encountering is the lack of a traditional Trinity and the need for active defenses in GW2 compared to other MMOs.
Read up on GW2 combat before you go any further especially before settling on “Staff Guardian” or “Water Elementalist”.
So since you guys no more than me, obviously.
could you guys recommend me some builds for both Profs? And Engi isnt all about throwing/spamming grenades and bombs right? And Ranger not all about his LB?
That’s how many people play them, but its by no means mandatory.
As Metalman has mentioned we don’t know the details of raids yet, but hopefully there will be a place for everyone since they’re 10-mans.
Secondly, and this goes for all game modes, you happened to have narrowed it down to the last two professions to have their Elite spec revealed in full. Forge (or whatever name they go with) will be this week for Engi, and Druid for Ranger will follow. So without info on the Elites you really can’t say one way or another.
Also, you don’t have to pick just one. It’s no trouble to level and maintain 2 80’s. On top of that they’re both medium armor profs so they can share account bound armor, which might make life a little easier.
I could definitely get behind your T8 proposal of EBG only, but Anet would never go for that because then T8 wouldn’t be getting the new BL come HoT.
As for anything between only EBG and all four maps you’d have to alter the BL maps to be balanced for 3-way action the way EBG is. Also not going to happen.
Those issues aside Anet would never close down maps on lower tiers for the same reason T8 is listed as medium population. It would be admitting they can’t fill servers.
Not if you have a target selected.
Since you mentioned not being able to find a class you like playing as melee it would be most helpful if you shared which classes and weapon setups you have tried, and what you didn’t like about them. That would be a lot more helpful than trying to run down all of the melee options.
Take a look at this for a pretty fun hybrid. Works pretty well for me when I’m not feeling like Power DS.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Build-Staff-Corruption/page/1
Right now you can stack 25 might on your pet and feel like “I could use 3 sec quickness right now” – resulting in stripping all of them reducing your DPS that way (since full buffed Pet would trade 25 might for 3 from the Zephyr Speed trait).
/This
It’s arguably worse than a comparable example from the Tools line for Engineers whereby the trait Adrenal Implants negates the minor trait Optimized Activation.
