No, really. If you get a new machine, wipe W8/W8.1 and install good old 7.

No really, this is the most spectacularly bad advice you can give to anyone. Even Microsoft won’t sell you Windows 7 any more. There is nothing wrong with Windows 8.1 as a gaming platform, it may have it’s design and marketing issues (Yuk! metro on a desktop) but for gaming it has the better performance

I have the “every note I play is wrong” bug often but it’s usually when I join a match later than round 1. I even expect it now if I join and the top scope is 200 I expect to be kicked by death, after that I can join the next round and it all works again so it’s pretty reproducible.

And no, it’s not me sucking sometimes, though I don’t often get 600 I usually get at least 580points

Why the Ranger hate.

Sandpit.3467

Dungeons are designed to hate rangers, Pet death is a big factor but also reflect, it’s hard for a ranger to not hurt their party sometimes.

People say that staying at range is the easy option but there is so much in GW2 that penalises you for range that people just don;t want rangers in their party. It’s nothing to do with player skill, you get noob rangers like any profession and you get expert ranger players; people don’t even let you start a dungeon if you bring ranger.

Until ANet fix some the critical issues with rangers they will always be excluded from dungeons. Tone down the pet death, tone down the range hate and do something about the terrible DPS and utility that rangers have.

In other forms of GW play they are not such a problem but it’s no fun being a ranger wanting to do dungeons. That is ANet’s fault

Edited: I live in the US. I have a desktop that is hard wired into my router. I terminated all processes before running the game manually through task manager. My antivirus is extremely light while running in the back ground. My desktop is about 4 years old and the ram is maxed by the system board standards at 4 gigs. I did however see an error message after letting the game initially download all night. I thought I might have to re download but the game still allowed me to play. It has been laggy from the first, even when doing my initial character setup. Any additional thoughts? I have even ran a chkdsk /r through command and I know how to keep my PC running at top performance. I only have a few programs downloaded on my PC.

Yeah, we were really sold a dodo on HoM. I would love obby armour as heratage, be better yet if you can access any armour or weapons (or minis for that matter) that you actually put into your HoM. i.e. it is your hall of monuments.

Won’t happen though, they just don’t have the staff or will to put world polish in. Their team has a full time job just adding all the new account bound junk to the game that we all love so much. All that junk just doesn’t appear you know, it takes a lot of dev effort to cram so much junk into a game.

Double-click and the search for a cure to RSI

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sandpit.3467

Thanks, on further searching and reading it seems that binding double-click to mouse wheel is quite common. Still a bit nervous about it. I would rather ANet improved the game UI to deal with the mass stacks of clicking that you have to do; this must be a major pain (literally) to many who don’t know they can configure their mouse differently.

Double-click and the search for a cure to RSI

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sandpit.3467

Sandpit.3467

It’s currently Wintersday, and for some reason ANet has decided to make double-clicking a MAJOR feature of the event, a trend that has been continuing for a long time in Guildwars 1 and 2. The current event sees you doubl-clicking large numbers of presents to open them only to find lots of other things that need to be double-clicked to open, some of which need to be salvaged by double-clicking and lots of other clicking.

I’m not the youngest of players and I now have significant pain in my arm so I have had to stop playing the game, but this is crazy! Why does it have to be this way? So first off I’ll ask ANet again for that much requested feature, the right-click / use all option to consume a whole stack at once.

As for some reason they would prefer to have their player base crippled rather than do this I started wondering if there is a another way.

My first thought is to use a simple macro (there are many programs and features built in to moder gaming mice etc) that will take the pain out of this. I tried this, pretty soon I was able to bind a single key press to open up a whole stack. Great I thought, problem solved. Hoever, I know ANet is touchy about third party programs and botting etc so I looked at various posts concerning such things. It’s never quite black and white with ANet and nobody wants to fall under the ban hammer, especially when you are just trying to avoid crippling pain during normal game-play.

Gaile Gray has stated that:

“Anything that automates the game or gives another player an advantage is disallowed.”

But also at http://www.guildwars2guru.com/arenanet-tracker/topic/255457-policy-3rd-party-programs-multi-boxing-macros/

“This means that if you program a macro, it must require one keystroke per action. You may not program a single key to perform multiple functions.”

So macros are not banned and single key – single action is okay; the macro I had, although performing a single-action (double-click), it does so multiple times so looks like it won’t be acceptable. And to be honest, when I tried it, it did feel a bit too good, I pressed the button and a few seconds later it was all done, maybe I was just enjoying not feeling pain but it felt like an advantage.

So a macro mapping a single key-press to a single double-click would be okay. A slight improvement but not much, we are still firmly in RSI territory. BTW, Anyone can use Microsoft Mouse Centre, (or presumably many other mouse drivers) to map middle mouse button to double click for the same effect, no 3rd party program (other than the mouse driver) needed.

So next I tried mapping a key press + mousewheel combination. Each wheel click being an action but now you have the advantage of performing several while scrolling the wheel. I would argue that this still honours the single-press to single action principle as you have to be there playing the game and you have to keep scrolling the wheel, but this is significantly better on the RSI stakes.

The only problem is that this is just my opinion doesn’t matter, what matters is if ANet would agree or ban me for it.

So I thought I would share this and maybe get some better guidance from ANet, I know they don’t like to comment on specific macros but RSI is a serious problem for many and the current content style aggravates this. The intention here is not to cheat and gain an advantage, it’s to play the game as ANet have given it to us but without suffering from repetitive strain.

Of course what would solve 95% of the problem is a right-click use all option (there would still be the salvaging issue). In the mean-time I can’t engage much in the double-click content as my arm hurts too much (and I wonder how much life is left in my mouse!). Presumably there are people with accessibility issues over this type of content.

And Merry Christmas

Having to double-click large stacks of junk, clicking on boxes that open up to yield other boxes is just stupid. Recipes that require bits made with other recipes with require bits from other recipes and so on.

It’s REALLY bad user experience. Where did it say in the guild wars manifesto that they want to make a game where everyone stands around for hours sorting out the junk in their inventory?

Sandpit.3467

I recall reading somewhere that ANet regarded destroying Ascalon (pre-searing) as one of their biggest mistakes and went on to explain why, about players “home” etc. Well it didn’t take long for them to make the same mistake again. And no, I don’t care about the “home” zones; they are just peripherally annoying instances that cease to be home very early in a character’s personal story and certainly not “home” to a player.

When I look at the map of Tyria I see lots of unexplored areas, places I can’t go to because the devs haven’t made that place yet. I wanted to visit these places in GW1 also, still waiting. So I’m very much in agreement with OP; stop destroying good stuff and make new stuff.

While we are at it, isn’t it time that Orr started to recover? I cleaned up that mess 2 years ago and it’s still an ugly mess. How about getting rid of the toxic/krait/scarlet junk out of Queensdale? It should never have been in that starting zone anyhow and now it has no place there, it’s just some forgotten junk in a once better world that is looking very neglected.

There is no counter to stealth

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sandpit.3467

Sandpit.3467

The problem with stealth is that it impacts the other player directly, not just the other player’s character. This is the equivalent of having blindness completely black out the player’s monitor, how would you feel about that? Maybe poison should actually make the player sick? Stealth doesn’t just effect the game, it effect’s the players playing against it.

A solution would be to have stealth ‘visible’ to enemy the same as it is to allies, that way stealth’s effects would be restricted mainly to the “character’s” abilities and not the players.

Sandpit.3467

Because the list is going to inflate instantly. For example, if the gold site was Gold.com (it’s not, it’s a redirect to Kay’s Jewelers store site), you’d need to include:

  • gold.com
  • gold.c0m
  • g0ld.com
  • g0ld.c0m
  • go1d.com
  • go1d.c0m
  • g01d.com
  • g01d.c0m
  • go|d.com
  • golddotcom
  • gold dot com
  • gold dot c0m
  • and then stuff as stupid as gee oh el dee, dee oh tee, see oh em.

And this is for_just_ one site.

And a very simple algorithm can relate these all as the same string. Just the same way as dictionary attacks on passwords don’t really care if your password is ‘password’ or ‘P455W0rD’ or any other combination.

Much easier than maintaining a team of report investigators!

Suggestion for whispering gold sellers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sandpit.3467

Sandpit.3467

Keep the chat options open, the game NEEDS this so -1 to OP idea.

The sellers always tell you the site address, so why doesn’t ANet maintain a filter list for those? Additionally, if you message the site to anyone you automatically get banned (maybe temp 72hr first, perma second). That list would be a lot easier for ANet to maintain than investigating gold-seller reports.

Why does ArenaNet hate farming?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sandpit.3467

Currently 10g gets you 100 gems. ANet doesn’t want you to have a lot of gold because that means you don’t buy gems with cash.

As the game matures, people have bought all the legendaries and ascended gear they really want so the spare gold goes to gems and the viability of ANet’s business model goes down. If it goes down enough then no more ANet. It’s a tough balancing act they have to make.

Is ranger in a terrible place right now?

in Ranger

Posted by: Sandpit.3467

Sandpit.3467

Because the post CDI thread has run its course. Like any other discussion pertaining ranger balance improvements. It is futile to discuss it as the ONLY thing they bother to take notice of is abusable bugs (only stuff that is “fixed” shortly after being reported).

You can discuss, suggest and otherwise try to come up with a solution, at the end of the day, you will be forced to work with what is available to you, not what you “should have had from the start”.

Either you learn how to perform as a ranger, or you suck. There is no inbetween.
You succeed, or you fail.
You master, or you don’t.
If you fail to master, if you fail to succeed, the class will underperform every time without exception.

Now tell me, how many people on this forum, or even in this game, can you say have mastered the ranger class to the point where they are no longer hindered by the class mechanics and quirky functions.

Pretty much this. ANet still (despite the massive CDI) have not addressed the profession problems. All we can do is keep stating the same arguments but nothing is going to change because ANet isn’t doing anything significant with the profession.

Basic problem is ANet doesn’t play ranger, doesn’t care about ranger and doesn’t read ranger forums. Expect no change in the state of the ranger.
