Give ideas to improve WvW.

Sarrs.4831

Okay so I see two big problems with WvW.

1. Stale.
We’ve had the same two maps and the same game for forever now.
Solution 1: Add more maps. Replace west and east borderlands with new maps. Maybe with different mechanics for their bloodlust but I don’t really care that much.
Solution 2: Add modifiers. On a week-by-week basis, the ruleset has a few extra rules attached to it, or changed rules. For example, one week might have Reactors instead of Supply Camps.

2. Matches take too long.
There’s not really much of a reason for matches to take seven days, when they’re fundamentally the same game. There’s no mechanical tempo shift, there’s no change in the goals, there’s no change in how score is earned (except for less kills happening, which causes the score to stagnate more rather than less).
Solution 1: Cut the length of the games down. 3 days is probably enough to decide most matches.
Solution 2: Introduce ramping tempo as the game progresses. At the moment, there isn’t really an ‘endgame’. As the week goes on, events should happen- either on a timetable, or preferably dynamically- which alter the game. For example, a fully upgraded tower might be able to upgrade a tower into a supertower, which is twice as good at towering and gives you double the points and has better cannons etc.

[MESMER] Buffs

Sarrs.4831

All that aside you’re wrong in saying that the trait is broken. Rather Mesmer is broken without DE. If you don’t already know this you don’t understand Mesmer.

They are broken towards one another. The trait is overbudget to make up for baseline mesmers being underbudget. Hence,

Mesmer in general should be less dependent on their traits to generate clones and more dependent on their base abilities.

Sarrs.4831

\All you’d be doing is ensuring all mesmer builds now require 6 points in dueling with the single exception of pure phantasm builds. You’re talking about inciting zero build diversity from this point on. 4 points in dueling right now is bad enough.

You contradict yourself. This change would create zero build diversity, but phantasm builds would still be available?

You are assuming that Evasive Deception is a must-have, no matter the price you have to pay; that’s the sign of a trait that’s broken, or at least GM material. There’s a short list of other traits which do the same thing at the Master level, most notable being Cleansing Ire.

Deceptive Evasion should be a GM trait and clone generation elsewhere should be pushed up slightly to compensate.

The system we have is fine as it is. Drastic changes are unnecessary. This change in particular would be game-killingly destructive.

Monthly promotions for buying gems with real money would be cool, like with the kites. They need to be open, though, and not hidden- you need to know what you’re getting and when you’re eligible for it.

While Sarrs’ math is terrible due to not taking into account the +100% duration cap, having those duration increases is a big issue.

Quickly reviewing, it does not appear as though said cap is a problem in my math. If food is included, it will cause that, but I didn’t include it for the sake of sPvP.

Can you please show me where my math is erroneous?

[New Skills] Focus as MainHand Weapon

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

this means guardians, mesmer, necromancer would get 3 new focus skills, the 1st one probably a slow but strong auto attack.

the elementalist would get 12 more skills!

Thing is, you could do this with any weapon, including the weapons which are already animated for the mainhand. You could just give axes to Guardians, Mesmers and Elementalists, and… idk, swords to Necros, and you’d end up with a bunch new skills for each of them.

The offhand weapons are kinda sorta specific for a reason; their trait budget depends on their position. Consider Spiteful Talisman, for example; that’s an Adept Major trait for the Necromancer which boosts focus range and reduces CDs. That’s pretty huge, but no mainhand weapon in the game can do that with an Adept slot.

[Suggestion] Unique traits for water combat

(edit)
I like the idea of dropping the distinction, in parts. I feel some classes should be able to use spears above water. But harpoon guns? OTOH, a bow underwater? Or a hammer? Makes very little sense. But a Scepter and a Focus, that might work.

Yeah I thought that after I posted it. Earthshaker will probably not work too well when you’re underwater. :p

[Suggestion] Unique traits for water combat

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

IMHO, water combat should not be more separated from land combat. They need to be brought together. With this in mind, two suggestions: one little, one big.

Little:
Change the aquabreather into a costume item, not an actual item.

The aquabreather should operate exactly like the costumes do now; it puts on a visual mask when you go underwater, instead of being an actual physical item.
Why is this good? Because stats and runes. The aquabreather is a lot of busy work for not much reward. Visually, it’s cool, but practically, not so much.

Big:
Remove the distinction between aquatic and terrestrial weapons. Roll staffs and tridents together. Roll harpoon guns and rifles together.

Same thing as with the aquabreather; there’s now a lot less busy work to do when it comes to gearing your character. It also opens up a huge amount more options for weapons when you’re underwater, and classes which aren’t elementalists and engineers get landspears. LANDSPEARS

It also means we get Raid on the Capricorn back which I’m sure everyone will agree is better than Skyhammer.

I don’t know if it counts as a woman in the fridge because it’s not to stir someone up. Mordy doesn’t care about who he kills. He probably can’t tell the difference between the peons that he kills.

I think it’s just a character we don’t care about who is related to a character the writers want us to care about (success debatable) dying. And we were fairly certain that she was being brought in so that she could get killed off; the only difficult part to estimate was when.

If she was killed off later, like halfway through the season instead of in the second episode, after we’d gotten to know her and maybe Marjory had gotten less annoying, then it’d have a bit more emotional gravitas. With this timing, she’s just a redshirt. A slightly complicated redshirt because it’ll change Marjory’s behavior, but a redshirt.

Also I thought the cinematic was kinda cool. Cooler than the four minutes of bickering that the two women went through immediately afterwards. The cinematic takes about 15 seconds and covers everything we need to know, and it’s immediately followed by 4 minutes of wasted space!

in Living World

Sarrs.4831

They needed -some- sort of term for the voice actors to refer to the player as.
Commander? None of them are members of the pact, they’d have no reason to call you that.
Snaff Savant/Legionnaire/other race-specifc PS story title? Perhaps, but Taimi probably wouldn’t be calling me Legionnaire as she wouldn’t know nor care what charr titles are. Not to mention that’s ten different recordings for each piece of audio rather than two (male and female).
Magister/Lightbringer/Vigil title? Perhaps, but the same problem as above.

As for “Friend”? Rox would be the only one of them I’d want to be friends with. While I like Taimi, we’re more her babysitter than friend, Brahm’s a boring “BRAHM SMASH!” character, and Marjory and Kasmeer spend so much time reminding us they’re a couple that people have literally died because of their banter.

So, yeah. “Boss” might not be the best choice out there, but I can’t think of a better one off the top of my head, so it doesn’t bug me.

If Braham called me Slayer, I’d be pretty happy with that.

1. what if it does not self destruct? it would actually cause new boons to expire the next second they are applied!

Yes?… It would?… I don’t know where you’re going with this.

That might actually be kind of cool. Fighting a necro, they slowly stack up this condition on you over the course of a fight that severely hinders your boon application. Fits into the theme of a necro; you get weaker, they get stronger. I’d probably say that this is a stronger design. Of course, it steps on complaint 3’s toes, but let’s get to that when we get to it.

2. actually cripple and chill have some similarities, both reduce movement though chill reduces even more and increases recharge time. bleed, poison, burning all does damage over time. what is wrong with boon bleed reducing duration of last applied boon over time?

They have similarities, but they are not another effect’s baby version. You could make a case for Cripple, but that’s counterbalanced by Chill being an incredibly strong and relatively infrequent effect, while Cripple just goes all over the place. Chill is also primarily focused on its inhibiting effect, while Cripple is focused on its snaring effect.

Burning and Bleeding have key differences which greatly affect how they math out. Poison is first and foremost a utility condition, not a damaging one.

As I noted above I think it would be stronger if it didn’t self destruct. If that were the case it might address this, because it’s no longer a baby boon strip but boon suppression.

3. true, but that did not stop them from introducing torment condition. :p

What they’ve done in the past is no justification for doing things in the future. Adding Torment might even be internally considered to be a mistake. There is a precedent for them adding a condition when they feel it’s necessary, yes, but first it needs to be proven that it is indeed necessary.

well, yes, correct.
but people still complain about having too many boons and not enough boon stripping so why not?

Do they? I mean, I don’t pay much attention, so idk.

Even if they are, this is not necessarily calling for a new condition. Boon strips, boon corruptions, boon steals and boon punishes do that just fine without adding new mechanics.

Sarrs.4831

hmmm would you let me try to explain it properly so you might reconsider?

tl; dr
it makes the last applied boon expire much faster.

hmmm i thought the example is being clear enough.
which part of it is confusing?

Okay I’m reading through.

Condition’s design flaws:
1. The condition is self destructing. If you stack it too high, it self destructs. This is really really bad. No boon or condition in the game gets worse if you stack it too high, outside of endangering yourself in boon steal/condition transfer situations.

Seriously if you stack this to 25 it will almost immediately vanish from the target because it will eat boons more quickly than the target could possibly apply them. Stacking something as high as possible is supposed to be rewarding, not punishing.

2. The effect already exists in the game in another form, which is boon stripping. There are no conditions currently existing which are basically another game effect’s “little brother”; they all work differently. Even the cripple/immobilise/chill family has distinct differences between them that make them work very differently from one another, but this one basically just strips boons over time.

3. Condition stacking. The game can only handle so many conditions at the moment before it gets ridiculous. Consider an engineer; they can currently apply almost every single condition in the game in a burst and overload peoples’ abilities to cleanse conditions. How much worse would that get if they had access to another condition? We can already see this in play with Perplexity runes.

Some classes are intended to have strong access to very few conditions. Some classes are intended to have access to many conditions, but their access is limited by cooldowns or resources.

And the one thing relevant to your specific example:
Why do mesmers need more boonstrip? Sword is already one of their best weapons, if not the best.

[Guardian] Glacial Heart

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

Sarrs,
what if it is a base 1 s of Chill only regardless of burn duration?
increased by traits, sigil, food?

in sPvP it would only be affected by traits and sigil though.

Keep in mind, we are considering the absolute extreme possibility. This is how far you can push this trait.

In that circumstance, you’re now applying far more Chill. Each of those Justice procs are now applying 100%30%15%+20%=1.65 second chills; more than they were applying previously. It is less expensive on sigils, as well, as you now have a free sigil slot, as opposed to needing to jack up your Burn duration.

We could alternatively use Superior Rune of the Ice instead of a generic Condi Duration run, and jack that Chill up even further to a 1.8 second chill every third hit.

It’s also no longer interacting with Burning utilities that well. It still is, but not as well. I’m more or less fine with that, but it should be an explicit component of the trait.

My opinion on Glacial Heart as it is, right now: It’s not taken because it’s too expensive. It’s in a line that’s out of the way and not otherwise very useful for a Hammer Guardian, which is a build which already requires at least 4 trait points in an out of the way line to operate.

Overall, I’d possibly argue that Hammer Guardians simply have too many traits. They’re worse than Longbow Rangers in that it’s completely impossible to actually get all your Hammer-appropriate traits; you can’t get all 3 writs and Two-Handed Mastery, and you have to spend another 5 points in Zeal to get the symbol boosters and you have to spend 4 points in Valor to get Glacial Heart. Zeal is sadly afflicted with a lack of good Master traits, and its Adepts are mediocre without points elsewhere propping them up.

Even if you don’t invest fully into beefing up your Hammer, and you just want the essentials w/ Glacial Heart, you’re still spending 30440, leaving a woefully low amount of points to round out your build.

So, to sum up:
1. Glacial Heart being Master Valor puts it out of reach.
2. Guardians have too many Hammer (and Symbol, therefore Hammer) traits.
3. The Zeal line’s weak/overly specific Master traits weaken the tree.

[Guardian] Glacial Heart

in Profession Balance

Sarrs.4831

Consider the hypothetical highest possible amount of chill uptime.

1. Maximise condition uptime. 30 pts in Zeal, 15% condition duration runes. This puts our condition duration at 145%.
2. Maximise burning uptime. Burning uptime sigil for 20%, Virtue of Justice trait for increased procs.
3. Maximise chill uptime. Chill uptime sigil for 20%, Glacial Heart.

You will apply a 1.65 second burning effect every 3 hits. You will then apply a (1.65/2)*1.65=1.36125 second Chill with every 3rd hit.

Obviously, there are huge double-dipping issues with this trait. This doesn’t even include using Permeating Wrath or any of the utilities which apply Burning, or any foods.

The logic of "Defiance"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

im gonna kind rant aimlessly for a bit

okay so we have like
stacks
and we have things we need to interrupt

and sometimes in a coordinated group at the moment, you will use certain low-CD crowd control abilities like Head Shot to knock down Defiant stacks, so that you’re able to use another crowd control of some kind that you actually want to apply

the most obvious example i can think of is the dude who hides in barrels in Gendarran and you knock down his stacks and then use a knockback/fear/pull to get him out of his puddles so that he’s no longer immune

and that’s pretty cool; you have to break down those defiant stacks so that you can defeat the boss, adding a new demand (in the economic sense) to the fight. instead of just needing damage, you now need damage and enough CC effects to chew through those stacks of defiant

the problem comes in when we add scrubs to the pile and they ruin your perfect defiant churn by going “hi guys do you like fear i am going to ruin your strat by fearing the boss and reapplying those defiant stacks!” and that super sucks

so yeah, defiant would be cool if the open world nature of the content didn’t screw it up

so imho make it so that, in world content, effects will only apply when they’re needed. if you’re fighting the dude in the barrels, and he has no defiant stacks, he’s still immune to controlling effects(and will not generate defiant stacks on CC attempts) BUT if he’s standing in a puddle he’s vulnerable to the appropriate effects. you still have to knock down defiant stacks after successfully pulling him out, and you still need to seal the deal with a good CC, but someone spamming CC will not screw you over completely.

i think control and interrupts are part of a healthy pve ecosphere

Suggestion: Favorite builds button

in PvP

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

The main problem I see with a basic(read: spvp) template implementation is weapons, because you require those physical items in order to be able to use those templates.

Traits? You’re fine, unless you’re inputting a code to get a build.
Amulet? Same problem only appears if you haven’t bought that amulet.
Runes? Same.
Sigils? Same.

These are all binary things; you either have them, or you don’t. If a code demands them and you don’t have those items then it can just throw up an error message.

Armor and weapons are the exception because they don’t seem to work quite like that.

Armor is irrelevant because it doesn’t do anything. Go away armor. Go back to PvE. Go on, get, you rapscallion. Shoo!

Weapons though are relevant. They don’t seem to quite exist in a binary state; it’s not “have you unlocked a dagger yes no”, you have bags full of things which are potentially daggers and potentially not daggers. You could potentially need two daggers.

So IMHO for a basic spvp template, the game needs to be able to say “hey, you don’t have a dagger/enough daggers right now, I am going to exploit the power of DIGITAL SPORTS to give you a pretend dagger. It’s not a REAL dagger, but it exists in spvp”. And I would be perfectly happy with that for a system; you put in a code, it tells you whether it can do it, and if it can, it’ll change you to that. And an ingame template library can be just that; a set of codes that it’ll use when you want to.

These are probably things everybody already knows but I like to talk

  • Fear of inspect / gear-check
no gear included… and atm u can also link the gear so there isn’t realy a difference (my point of view).
Trait-link: would be a nice feature but I’ll understand if its not included and i don’t realy need it.

pls no inspect
The spvp implementation of inspect is fine and does the job there. I think if inspection were implemented for pve traits/gear, the negative repercussions would outweigh the positive.

in PvP

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

  • Every necro has a stun defense: Doom. It isn’t really a stunbreak but it is a skill that can be used to stop enemies from spiking the MM while stunned.
  • Necros don’t have stability or vigor. So it isn’t a MM weakness.
  • Necro don’t have any tools like blocks, heavy evades, evade frames on skills.
  • Necros in general don’t have mobility. So everything you say about MM that is a weakness is redundant.
  • Necro escapes come from its CC. Instead of running fast like a rabbit, necro slow the enemy down like a turtle to escape. Every weapon set except offhand dagger has a slow.

What the build needs is a staff and Rune of Melandru.

  • Staff can chill and transfer condi + AoE fear. The AoE fear is similar to a 2 second block/evade/etc.
  • Rune of Melandru gives extra toughness/vit/stun and condi reduction.

I’m assuming he asked what this build’s weaknesses were so that he knew which weak points to target. I’m not talking about it from a balance perspective. I’m just saying that if you counter these points, you’re going to ruin his day.

Also, a good MM necro can escape slower targets like hambow warriors. They aren’t thief/mesmer tier but if you use your tools correctly you can disengage very easily, and 99% of that ability is tied up in the Flesh Wurm.

Here Top100 Necro's Build. Pros and Cons plz

in PvP

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

This looks like fairly standard MM. There are a few points I don’t like about his specific loadout, though;

1. Shadow Fiend instead of Flesh Wurm. Shadow Fiend is certainly nice, but running without a stunbreaker means he doesn’t have any versatility at all as he can’t make a 1200 leap off a point, and a decap engi will have their way with him.
2. Death’s Embrace instead of… Something else. I find this an odd choice, but it could work. Downed Necro 3 is pretty brutal, if you can get it off.

Weaknesses:
He has no stunbreakers, no stability, and no vigor. Outside of his normal dodge generation, he has no way to get out of stuns. If you can get a buddy with some CC to come along with you, he’ll be unable to do anything at all. Similarly, he doesn’t have any of the tools that other classes use to tank, like blocks, heavy evades, evade frames on skills, etc etc- if you can get a focus on him, he’s just a life sponge.
His minions are very vulnerable to AoE. MM necros are obviously pretty well neutered when you kill their minions.
He has next to no mobility. This is partially because he doesn’t have a Wurm, and partially because he’s a necro. The only button he can push to go faster is Warhorn 5.

Dishonorable debuff - bad design

It does suck when this happens. I can’t control when my internet craps out and I can’t control when my computer craps out, and it’s a bummer to get dishonorable or lose progress of any kind when this happens.

But, to play devil’s advocate, while it would be nice if it didn’t happen… What other solution is there? The game can’t detect when your hardware craps out by accident or on purpose. And yes, there are people who intentionally drop out of games once even the first clash is lost.

It’s not going to be that godkitten thorn prick, is it? Our characters have been pricked with so many thorns that we should be gods by now.

I’m not sure what skills you need to use to interrupt his Take Off. Fear doesn’t work, but Golem Charge seems to. Would be nice if all interrupts worked properly on him.

What sort of stories would you like to see?

If I can just slide in here, I’d like to see a location develop over the course of a living story.

For example, Fort Trinity was supposed to be this huge effort between the three Orders revamping an old fortress overlooking the Straits of Devastation because it’s a really strategically important location. That’s cool, but we never really see that, and the few parts we do see are split across a whole bunch of personal story events.

We’re probably going to need a new Fort Trinity if we’re going to go west and punch Mordy in the gob. So what if we had the opportunity to strike land somewhere and build it up? Trahearne says “commander, a word (this won’t end well) (moving on) go find a spot to build a fort” and we’re like “okay” and we go somewhere and build a fort. Could be cool.

Want me to write you a story? Hire me.
If you are good at something never do it for free.

redesign 90% of the new area.

Overstatement. Fixing the zone would be putting in literally 4 bridges and 3 ramps.

All of them are good to learn the game. Pick whichever looks the coolest to you/you think you will enjoy the gameplay of the most.

swap mainhand & offhand weapons in combat

in Profession Balance

Not a good idea. It might be nice to have a way to easily set it up so the same items are in the second weapon set for the sake of saving money, but actively allowing certain classes to have more weapon spreads by swapping their weapons over would be a huge unfair advantage.

because they can?
it is already possible to do this in hotjoin / PvE / WvW as long as the warrior is not in combat.

1. Nobody cares about hotjoin balance.
2. Yes, you can swap out of combat. You’re asking to be able to change in combat, which is a completely different thing.

Being forced to replay missions is bad

I agree. I think, if it’s possible, that the achievements should be hidden until you complete the content. This way, if you really, really want to grab achievements on the first run, you can google it or whatnot, but it doesn’t feel like you’re being forced to do them.

It’s not as if Inquest is trying to hurt them, or anything… Well, it’s true that for the subsequent playthroughs it’d be nice to at least have some exp or loot from mobs in these quests, as currently one feels he’s rather wasting time there…

They don’t drop any loot so you can’t just sit there farming the mobs inside an instance for eternity. Would be nice if this were changed so that, for example, the first X amount of mobs drop loot normally and after that, they stop, if the game thinks you’re getting to the point of silliness.

I’m happy with her appearing. I don’t really think they should take a prominent role though, unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s a cool little perk to have out in the world but I think pushing them as ‘core’ characters would have the same consequences as it did with the original Pact storyline (Trahearne coming out of nowhere if you’re not a Sylvari, pact lasur beems coming out of nowhere if you’re not an Asura).

Suggestion: One Handed Katana

in Black Lion Trading Co

One of the greatest swordsmen of all times, Miyamoto Musashi, would often dual wield swords or use unconventional techniques. He even created a kenjutsu technique that used a katana and a wakizashi (niten ichi-ryu). Admittedly, his style by all accounts was to ignore tradition if another way allowed you the victory, but I am sure many others would eschew traditional styles when necessary.

My issue would be that most of the swordfighting animations in GW2 would be wholly incompatible with the techniques of Japanese sword use. Jian and Dao (Chinese swords) may be another matter altogether.

As I understand, he created those techniques after he stopped dueling.

Anyway, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a katana, or blade which is curved in that angle, and with that point. We already have blades which roughly match what most people would think of as a katana anyway, in the Ceremonial Scimitar.
