Why RNG-only skins are bad

I’m surprised with the ops background he doesn’t just propose a new mmo on kick starter, propose his ideas, and let the money roll in.

Everyone hates RNG so it should be easy.

I don’t want to run a game company, and I left the game dev world a decade ago.

KickStarter is not the solution to everything, nor is it any guarantee of success. I much prefer applying game theory to commodity markets. And yes, I am part owner of my company.

All of that is, however, non sequitur to the main topic: I have not seen a single good reason for some parts of the game to be locked behind random chance, while other very similar parts are behind a paywall or can be earned deterministically thru gameplay.

Inconsistency is disatifying.

But again, with so many people agreeing with you, there must be a reason it hasn’t happened in another game. Or why someone hasn’t taken up the charge.

I actually agree that making some skins exclusive to certain aspects of the game makes them more unique, and at least show you accomplished something, even if you aren’t good at it.

I’m waiting for the tribal set to be reinstated before going back to spvp, since it was the sole reason I was trying in the first place.

been happening since launch sadly. It took a long long time to get any mention on previous posts about the loot issues when they were worse than they are now, and that thread was repeated 4 times because they kept deleting them, what’s worse is the last thread that was posted about the loot issues and lack of rewards this game suffers one of the community managers posted that it was all people’s imaginations. Now there are whole memes created about that post where it’s clear they think players don’t know when something’s dramatically and fundamentally flawed in the game design.

wahhhhh…………………………….

john smith has been very active in the forums. In fact, he answer so many post on the bltc that we actually have an ok idea which items are part of the game design or what are the real problems in this game.

Most people don’t come to the forums to give proper criticism and debate, but to live in an echo chamber so they feel special about themselves.

Person complains about something and about a net.
More people chime in agreeing.
Echo chamber begins.
Person steps in with different opinion or defends anet.
People chide new person and call white knight, etc.
Echo resumes.

I seem to recall them saying it will be possible to obtain them in the future (probably through some sort of reward-track or something I would think).

And to be fair, what else could they have given them? If there had been no rewards people would have complained just as much.
No matter what they do people will complain.

I did some searching, and found that this has been happening before where corrupt files just keep getting replicated over and over again, even when using the repair tool.

I reinstalled my driver using a complete clean install. It went fine for a few days, but now I am getting the error again! (and Yes, I tried the way in the ollllld thread how to fix, with creating a new repair shortcut, still no luck)

Lol, you want a total overhaul of the combat system?
Also, it’s not ANet’s fault that the players turned EotM into a karma train. They gave us a perfectly good map with interesting mechanics and we’re the ones that didn’t appreciate it enough.

I think it’s been confirmed that we won’t get an expansion, but LS season 2 is all permanent content, so I don’t really mind at all.

Don’t forget it was also play tested by wvw guilds who signed up, and THEY didn’t pick up on the abuse either!

Basically, you want to go for exotic gear, that is the orange quality. The highest tier is ascended, which is a reddish pink, but that isn’t required to do max 80 stuff (unless doing fractals).

The weapon you want depends on how you want to play. Do you like great sword? Axes? There are guides for max DPs (hint, its great sword). But again, its not required. Do you like dealing nothing but DMG and unable to really take a hit? The go for berserker, want some tankiness and DMG? Knights, its how you want to build.

80g is actually pretty good for you. You should be able to actually buy all the armor and weapons you need, but I would go to the karma vendors in or at the temples first for pieces.

As for dungeons, try using the lfg tool first for any friendly ones for new people. If that isn’t working, try finding a guild.

Mesmers are fun, slow at first when leveling till later, but then they really take off. They bring a portal, haste, ablnd other buffs or can be good DMG dealers. Lots of times you see speed dungeon runners wanting at least 1 mesmer.

- Orbs are still MIA despite the promise to bring them back. It took nearly 2 years for them to hide they ever existed (they removed the northern ramp in the borders and removed the orb guards) but sure enough they finally did it. And I dont believe they ever said why.

Orbs were removed because too many times matches would go haywire because of an exploiter, so the were removed. They did not bring back the orbs physically because the same thing would happen, so they created the small capture zones at the center of the maps. When you hold them, you essentially get the orb buff.

EotM “fails” because players decided to ignore the maps intent and use it as a farming zone.

That’s a player-side problem. It has nothing to do with a lack of communication for the devs.

To be fair, if you design something that is capable of being farmed/exploited, its’ going to be farmed/exploited. Edge of the Mists was too good to be true for a farmer, and farmers used it. It’s a delicate balance.

Most troubling is a single guild that uses it to farm itself for bags, since they have chapters on different servers. They’ve pretty much destroyed EotM for anyone who doesn’t want to farm.

To be fair, you don’t know its capable of being farmed or abused until you get people playing (see champ trains when they existed).

And to be doubly fair, the EotM map had a PTR, where player WvW guilds got invited. So not only did the devs not see the flaw, but WvW players as well

At this rate...a big let down.

You know, I get what OP is saying, but is there some kind of MMO out there that I’ve never heard of that has completely new content available every single day?

Because honestly what it sounds like is that OP wants each LS release to fill an entire two week’s worth of content so by the time the next one comes out he can move on to the next one without ever having to go back to old content.

I’ve played pretty much every major MMO and whenever there was an expansion I would play for two-three weeks, hit the new level cap and complete all of the new dungeons save for probably a raid, at which point the next 6month-1yr ends up with me playing the same raids/dungeons/content over and over until the next expansion, which can also be completed in a matter of weeks. That’s how it has been done in every other MMO.

Why is GW2 being held to some ridiculous standard where each partial update needs to completely occupy players’ time for a full two weeks when most full expansions barely occupy people that long—and that’s with a full blown paid for with real money expansion.

You hit the nail on the head.

Most of the complainers finish what they are given and expect more immediately right after. It is impossible to keep up with such demand.

Let’s face it, if they opened up try top off the bat, gave us three episodes of the LS, by the end of the week, or SOONER, people would complain and want more content already.

And those that say ‘a whole expansion would satisfy me more months!’ No it wouldn’t. Stop lying to yourself. You would race through it as fast as you can, do everything to just say you did it, then say ‘that was all? I want more!’. Again, if, at the time, a WoW lead developer says they can’t keep up with demand, what makes you think anet will?

This isn’t something that mmo developers need to work faster on, but that the players need to learn to slow down.

At this rate...a big let down.

Why do people always bring up raids, when people ask for more content?
Content does not automatically mean more raids.

Content = Karka Queen, Triple Wurm, Tequatl, EotM, Skills, Weapons, Armor, Traits, Zones, Dungeons, Fractasl, Jumping Puzzles, WvW, SPvP, World Bosses, Champions, Dynamic Events, Map Completions, Heart Tasks, Professions, Crafting, Races, Customization, Dyes, Wardrobe, etc…

GW2 has this content, and people want more of this. Some of it has been upgraded, changed, and implemented, but the rate at which it’s implemented has been really slow. This is the major complaint from most people. It’s not about adding raids.

I wasn’t trying to focus just on raids.

Karma queen, world bosses in general = when they first came out, people complained and whined. Too hard, can’t get organized, blah blah blah. Make it an instanced raid (I haven’t said that, people on forums have).

EotM = wah this is boring and just a champ train farm now.

Skills = do you want all skills to be viable or more and more just added in so you have pages to go through to find the one skill that you like because everyone else has it? Same with weapons and traits.

Dungeons, we need more, yes, but many of the old need revamped or fixed as well.

Fractals people complained that new fracals ’isn’t real content’.

Crafting, we just got more recipes. Legendary armor at some point, precursor crafting on back burner.

I can go on, but the problem remains that no matter what they do, someone will be displeased and upset. And more and more the forums as becoming an echo chamber of this displeasure. The second someone disagrees, it becomes ‘white knight’, ‘fan boy’ and the chamber echoes and chastises them out. The same goes for the other side.

Here’s how the forum topics go.
1. Some posts a complaint.
2. Some agrees with said complaint, others joining in.
3. Echo chamber commences.
4. Some disagrees. Chastising commences and echo resumes.
5. Posts demand anet response or assumed devs don’t care.
6. No response, thus more echo
7. Game is dying.

At this rate...a big let down.

So, what do you want?

Do people want to go back to WoW’s method of one new raid content patch once every three months? In which you get done the stuff in either a month or less unless you are grinding for gear?

Even ghostcrawler admitted that they, blizzard, who have more employees than anet, could NOT keep up with the demand.

Anet even said before that they don’t want to be like other MMOs (which is good because the genre is getting stale, hence why some old things like mob tagging are going away, and EQNext is looking to make smart AIs (I’ll believe it when it happens)).

So anet isn’t looking to just release a whole expansion at once, they seem to be doing it through LS. If we hit a milestone in the story like where the minister is going, it may reveal a new profession. We don’t know, and we don’t know exactly if this is the method.

After for the deaf ear, there was a discussion with john smith about the economy yesterday as he fielded questions. We had the community developments before where Chris took time to talk and post on the forums even on his days off (I do hope these come back too). We had Q&As where a topic about a department was selected and you could ask questions, where someone there would try best to answer.

Lastly, if you haven’t noticed yet, the second anet says they are going to ‘try’ to implement something, it is taken as a promise. And if it fails, then everyone rages at them for failing to deliver on it. So they have to stay quiet on some things, that no amount of pressure will allow them to spill. I mean, if your boss told you to keep something quiet, and you continued to blab about it to the forums, would you be working there for long?

Also, forums =/= majority of players.

I just have one question:

Why isn’t it possible to put superior runes in the mystic forge to gamble? This would at least start using up the lowest priced runes on the market, and allow us to at least try for an unsoulbound rune.

I support this idea.

CAVEAT: I am biased since I flush tons of majors per week – I stand to potentially luck out and gain from it.

EDIT: Doh! He said runes vs. sigils. Echo this question related to sigils, please

I fixed it to support sigils too :p.

As for dropping from dungeons, the same ones drop from the MF too, but are just stuck to the character made on. I just wish I knew why we can’t allow this

The short answer is that it would crash the market for runes….

I won’t argue the materials part – but crash from what – 2 silver a piece? The ones relevant to the suggestion are already just over vendor price. I’m a bit gamble-y (is that a word?); but at that value, well, “…something worthwhile in the Mystic Toilet is worth 2 silver in the hand…” err, or whatever

I’ll explain it more but we should start a new thread if we’re going to keep this topic going.

When all runes can be out into the mystic forge, you will have players attempting to get the more desirable ones such as travelers, scholars, strength, etc. This will cause the prices of the cheaper runes to rise as well as the associated ingredients to craft them (if they’re craftable). The rise in those ingredients will also cause the prices of other items that use them to rise as well. Eventually it will reach an equilibrium similar to conversions of tiered materials.

There’s also the dungeon tokens you ckittene for runes. Even though those runes are soulbound or accountbound (can’t remember), the runes you get will likely not be unless they were hard coded to be so. Many players have an incredible amount of tokens and will use these to try to get other runes. This will create a surplus and drive down the prices of all runes.

But prices are rising on the rare form of runes and sigils already as people gamble them for the exotic version.

Now, the dungeon tokens, yes, could be hardcoded, just like the exotic trinkets from karma vendors.

Men, here is my predictions.

Majorey will now be grief stricken, causing her to think less rationally, this will most likely cause a rift between her and her lover.

Rox is starting to show jealously towards Tiami, which will most likely cause her to speak out, which brahm will try to defend, this causing another rift between the three (why you always taking her side?…I’m not!…etc).

And Tiami is starting to get too overgofident in her abilities that a major mistake will be coming soon to knock her down. We’ve seen this as she was lying to us about probabilities of success (or living). Andonce that mistake happens, it will trigger everything else.

Though as much as I would be acting the same way as my character after being shocked by who knows how many voltage of electricity and seeing the Eternal Alchemy I would be a bit concerned if my mind was still intact or Mordremoth may have gotten into my head just enough that we may start hearing his voice as we progress farther into the storyline.

This would be cool in the fact as we are playing, a whisper can play in the background during story mode.

That would actually be very very cool.

Add in our characters getting a dazed status when it occurs, along with some instances where we can’t tell who is friend and who is foe. You know, make it so we’re not even sure if we’re going to be able to take on the dragon without going insane in the process.

Even have a dungeon ending with a real fight worthy of a final fight, where we get to the point where we have to do the final blow to Mordremoth ourselves, only for him to try to take complete control of us. Being up close, we end up in our own mind, where we have to fight and defeat him there in order to allow us to pull the finishing blow on him.

Kinda like in skyrim where you drink that potion, and slaughter all these goblins, only to find out they were villagers.

I was actually half expecting this when I got out and would fight everyone round me till I was subdued.

Even though Tiami says she will be able to adjust and prevent this, I can see it backfiring, and maybe even ending up destroying ALL WAYPOINTS. This goes into the pattern because Tiami has been right on everything so far, that a major screw up is bound to happen sooner or later.

You’re right, there’s no dungeon path that I’d use those traits in. But there are times when I’m defending at tower in WvW that those traits were fun to use, and to some degree useful. Just swap them in, jump into a zerg, and make your getaway back through the gate. Great fun actually.

Not many people do this, however. It would be interesting to see if anyone else does.

Kinda how I see it. Fall traits are wvw only. I would say the warrior one is best for gate defending with its knock back. Stops those rams.

Too me it’s not about the amount of content (too much, too little), it’s about the replay-ability of the content. Almost all of the GW2 content is the same the 1st time or the 100th time. I

I would rather see caves & mini dungeons on each map with random hidden locations, traps, bosses and loot. Make player’s explore and find loot vs just reward it at the end, would be better, adding more long term play than this living world stuff.

Secret and random hidden locations work only so long. People forget that outside of the game there is the internet and youtube. There and secrets or tidbits are revealed, along with guides on how to find a collection or do a jump puzzle, etc.

So, unless you can stop those websites, then devs can’t win on people ‘blazing through content’ because they have to be first to post about it.

I means how many people rushed through so they could be first to give opinions on the update on these forums?

Prob should mark this thread for spoilers, but since we are a few days out already, should be fine.

Anyway, my theory, and spoilers ahead.

It was said in scarlette’s hub that dragons don’t destroy magic, but consume and absorb, Storying it. I can’t remember, but the dragons have appeared twice before, so now I assume if the other fractal had won, we would’ve learned about this more.

Back to the dragons. Since they absorb and store, we are unsure how they release, but their bodies become a large source of magic, even while dead. This would explain why shaitan still has minions even after death, as his magic could be leaking out, or some minion doing it.

Glint was a dragon, and either unintentional or not, she absorbed magic. And although she died in the crystal desert fighting, it was never said her body was laid to rest there. In come the zephyrites, probably noticing the magic stored within, and his her carcass somewhere to not be abused.

That’s theory one, and the master is going to go and check up on the body, to assure its untouched, as it would make sense for the inquest to want that much magic power.

Theory two, glint was buried somewhere in crystal desert, and offspring are hidden around here.

Theory three, combination with one of the two above, except betrayed by minister.

So when a supposedly huge launch comes out (it is the start of season 2 after all) and it ONLY caters to the story-loving crowd, of course we’ll be disappointed.

I would argue it caters to the MMO-loving crowd, but well…
Plus really, “only caters”? Because all you do is listen to Kasmeer and Marjory talk, and then your game closes until July the 15th? Uh huh.

You mean RPG loving crowd, not MMO.

If anet hypes it, players say its doomed to fail.
