I won’t be buying the expansion for 50$ as well and will just have to be patient and hope it gets a release of it’s own or a large sale a year after it’s been around. It really is a terrible deal to existing players, you are buying a second copy of a game you already own with no bonuses attached(standard one). Better to start a new account with such a deal.
I’m placing my bets on another mmo instead, which is starting its last closed beta next week for 20 bucks. If it’s good I think that’s where Ill stay and maybe pop back to check gw2 if the xpac gets released as a add on.
20 bucks for a closed beta? Now THAT my friend, is a sham.
It very well could be. If it doesn’t meet up to my interests, I could wait for launch since it’ll be free to play but this game looks so cool to me and has a lot of features I think I’ll enjoy. It’s a risk I’m willing to take based on its style.
GW2 on the other hand is something I know inside and out and it’s style has become stale. The xpac in my eyes is not worth the deal they are offering. When (if) it is I will return for sure because gw2 is still a good game just abit old now graphically as far as the character models and clothing dynamics.
I don’t want to support that deal as it is.
I think that’s an issue with the game itself, not something that a cheaper expansion would fix.
(edited by Shifu.4321)
Ask for a refund then. I’m sure if you bought it relatively recently (like a couple of months), they can accommodate something (but you’ll lose your characters and everything for a fresh account).
You can get a new account WITH the expansion, but your current account would not have HoT.
Giving a discount = lying
They WILL merge the threads at some point, after which most complaints will die down since people will realize that it is what it is and either buy or not.
So come back in a couple of days.
Hell, all these complaints about the expansion’s pricing? Blame that on Activision and Blizzard, who started the trend of expansions being the same price or nearly the same price as the core game..
At least Blizzard expansions had content.
Their current expac is pretty devoid of content.

I’m happy stop your whining, its a free base game to new players, I paid for ultimate and I’m happy. peasant’s should go back to WoW
This sounds like the ravings of an eight-year-old…
Just sayin’.
You sound like 5
Just sayin
What’s the difference between the ravings of an 8 year old and a 5 year old?
Nexon is bad, but ignorable in the long run since they only have influence over their games. EA and Activision have influence over the gaming industry as a whole, which makes them the ultimate evil.
Hell, all these complaints about the expansion’s pricing? Blame that on Activision and Blizzard, who started the trend of expansions being the same price or nearly the same price as the core game. In fact, every bad practice we see today (DLC, restrictive DRM, rehashed yearly games, graphics over gameplay, etc.) can probably be attributed directly to these two “titans” of the industry.
Nah, EA and Activision are literally the devil.
Still not as bad as when Ascended was first released. Now THAT was pretty bad.

It’s 50 bucks for maybe 10 bucks worth of content.
I’m willing to pay 20 though.
Were you really expecting HoT to be $20? That’s like, the cost of a couple of FO3 DLC that takes maybe 5-6 hours to play. That’s 2000 gems, not even enough for 3 outfits.
Personally, I expected $40 (same as FF14).
Anet posted on reddit that they will offer a HoT upgrade for players who just bought the base game. I don’t know what the parameters on those orders are, but it’s something they are doing.
They’ll have to offer that deal to every single person who bought the game after HoT was announced then – because that’s when they made the claims about the base game and needing it for HoT.
And then today, tried to change the FAQ without any of us noticing. Scummy move.
I’d imagine it would be a case by case basis. Like if you bought the game in February and made a couple of 80 characters and gotten some exotics, they’d probably disallow the refund.

So the longer you have played, the worse deal you get? Sounds about right along the lines with how cell phone /cable satellite companies treat their old customers, new customers always get the best deals. Only problem is, it’s not like you can leave gw2 and then come back. xD This is a news worthy debacle.
Yeah man. kitten , I mean, forget all about those LS episodes and other free kitten they did during the game’s 3 year lifespan that new players will NEVER experience right (unless they pay 200+ gems and even then, it’s not complete).
ohhh….so this $50 tag is paying for the stuff we got for free then? So then…it wasn’t free after all?
It’s paying for expansion no? The free stuff was free yeah?

To put it into perspective, the cost of HoT is equivalent to 3 unlimited harvesting tools, 1 outfit, and 1 hairstyle kit.
Think about that.
HoT is going to have less story, less maps, no dungeons, and about 1/3 of the original games total content.
Yet, costs the same amount of money as the original game at launch.
Think about that.
Which means you can’t place things in vacuum and compare them on a 1:1 ratio.
Standard pricing for expansions TODAY is around $40-60 (See Heavensward and WoD), both of which have less content than the base game. I mean, kitten , Diablo 3 expac was $40 for what was basically 1/4 of the original game. Don’t forget SC2 expansions that go FULL price as well for what’s basically new missions and few new units.
Heavensward is 40 bucks.
WoD was 50 bucks, that came with a free 60 dollar cash shop item upon purchase. You know, an item that helped out both new and loyal players. And it’s still 80% of the price for far less than 80% of the content of the original game. Plus you have to pay a monthly fee on TOP of that.
there was still a FREE 60 dollar cash shop item which lightened the blow of the 50.00 price tag….you also didn’t have everyone getting WoW, BC, WotLK, Cata, MoP and more for free, which didn’t divide the playerbase as people buying just HoT Content vs new players buying HoT + Base game content.
Oh man, they better release the super duper 4k gem mini soon then, definitely get my money’s worth with that!

On a more serious note, $10~$20 for a movie is what we’ve accepted as “fair” price for a 1.5~2 hour movie, much like how it’s generally considered fair to pay less for an expansion than the full game on the understanding that said expansion will provide less than said game (paying less for less = fair).
It would only be hypocritical if we were okay with paying $30 for a thirty minute movie with 1~1.5 hours of a movie we had already paid for and seen tacked on as filler, much like how we have to pay more for an expansion than the base game, but still offers far less than said game.
Well, if you look at recent MMO expansion standard prices, $50 is roughly in the middle. Heavensward is $40, while WoD cost $60 – neither of which has as much content as the base games.

they only care about money… no matter new player or existing player need to spend $50. that will increase their income. no matter what.
Well, yeah that’s how paid expansions work I guess?
is forcing your loyal players to delete a chr for a new class OR be forced to buy a 10.00 chr slot on top of the 100.00 they have now paid for the game, how paid expansions work?
Sometimes yes.
i guess that’s why somtimes, games flop

To be fair, watching movies in the theater is quite an experience, especially for good and enjoyable movies, which you can’t replicate unless you have a literal 1000-inch screen and popcorn.

campare to Nightfall and Faction NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!!
GW1 had no living world content that came in between expansions, please stop your QQ and realize this
GW1 has balance update every months. Good changes or not, they tried.
GW2…..3 years and finally they do something to pve balance in the next patch.
GW2 has had multiple balance patches over the years. Some good, some not, but to say they “finally” did balancing is wrong.
Don’t be a white knight. Defend the points you think are right, but criticize the ones you feel are wrong.
This is the one big complaint I have with the expac. I don’t give a crap if new players get the core game for free, but an additional slot for upgraders would go a long way in showing Anet’s appreciation for their long time users.

It’s not really free, but rather free WITH HoT. It’s like buying a hotdog sandwich and getting a free drink, as opposed to buying the drink standalone. It’s an incentive for new players.

So if Anet suddenly charged new players 20$ for the base game and 50$ for the expansion, but the expansion remained $50 for upgrading, it would be better?
If they had announced that in the beginning, there would probably be much less complaining. A bit too late for that now. Common sense.
Well, they can’t really go back on that now, since it would be MUCH worse if they suddenly increased the price for new players.
In the long run, I don’t really give a kitten what some new player paid for a game that I’ve been playing for 3 years. What’s more important is that I get what I paid for.
If getting what you paid for was the real issue, I’d sympathize with all the complaints, but if people are just gonna complain that new players get the core game for free, then well…

What I find strange is that a lot of people are complaining not about the price, but that new players get the core game for free. It’s as if they would have preferred it if HoT cost $60 BUT new players had to pay $70 or $80 instead.
Personally, I’m actually glad that the core game is free. That means the game becomes more accessible for a lot of people. I payed $60 for the game when it launched in 2012. I had 3 years to enjoy it and seen it as money well-spent with over 4000 hours put into the game. If new players get the core game for free (basically), so be it. It really doesn’t affect me in personally, and will bring a lot of life into the game.
That said, I’d definitely want a free character slot.

Are people really screaming and shouting because the game is $50 as opposed to $40? Really?
I ordered 4 boxes of pizza last night. Cost me rougly $55 and I’d say it was worth it.
Not really, no. You could still play a lot of the content without HoT, but I’d wager you probably won’t enjoy it as much when there are areas and aspects of the game you can’t access.
So in a way, if you’re investing a lot of time in the game, you basically will have to purchase HoT in the long run.
I think there should be:
https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/94582027-Heart-of-Thorns-Pre-Purchase-FAQ
Can I pre-purchase through my favorite retailer?
Yes. Starting on June 23, 2015, you’ll be able to pre-purchase boxed and digital editions of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns from our official retail partners. You may also be able to pre-order through retailers, but there is no official pre-order program and pre-purchasing is the only way to receive the benefits of our pre-purchase program, including access to all of the Beta Weekend Events.
Note that the Ultimate edition is only available for purchase in-game and via buy.guildwars2.com. Additionally, there won’t be an option to upgrade to the Ultimate edition later if you decide to purchase the Standard or Deluxe edition.
This I agree with. A new slot at LEAST in place of another account.

My thoughts exactly. Not buying at that pricepoint especially kitten off no character slot. LOL!
How is it a scam? Have you ever bought an expansion for an MMO before? News flash, they’re all $50+.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is $40. Shut up.
Whoa! A whole $10 difference! What a game breaker!
Hell, even GW2’s monthly fee is higher.

Isn’t $40-$50 the standard price for an MMO xpac? I’m kinda confused since I paid $60 for WoW expacs and the upcoming FFXIV xpac is $40 (not counting the monthly fees).
Can anybody point me to a $20 expac? I can’t seem to find one.

Does that make me a bad man for buying 4 WoW expansions at $60 each AND paying 15$ per month for around 4-5 years just to play a game?
I think that lowering the bar of entry for ascended would go a long way. The current cost for an ascended set is around 500+g each, mostly due to damask (I think weapons are in a good spot).
Lowering silk use for damask from 4 to 2 (same as mithril) would reduce the cost of both silk and damask drastically to more reasonable prices. I think a good spot would be around 25-30g or so for each armor piece or around 150-180g for a whole set. 30g is achievable with around 2-3 days playing casual dungeons and daily rewards.
That means that it’s very achievable for even a casual player to get. Maybe 1 month at the most for a set for casual players.
Don’t underestimate that 600 range on axe vs dagger. From my experience (been WvW’ing since headstart), it’s literally the difference between getting flattened by the melee train and getting some nice damage in between DS and wells.
That said, I switch between dagger and axe depending on the situation. If the fight requires me to stick a bit to the melee train (for example close quarters in a keep), I’ll switch to dagger. In GvG, I prefer dagger as well for the immobilize and burst down with LB.
Where do I think the hammer will shine? In large scale WvW.
It has everything you’ll need to be versatile from both the front and backlines. Range, AoE, blast finishers for water blasts and even a mobile reflect. So while it might not see use in PVE or sPVP, I predict it might become a meta weapon in WvW.
What I’d like to see is a mainhand mace weapon, turning the thief from a stealthy high burst class into a quick, heavy CC-oriented, lockdown class – basically a faster hammer warrior. Perhaps with greater tankiness while giving up some stealth.
I think for the initial elite specs, Anet would try to give everyone a new weapon without repeating, and since ranger already gets staff, I highly doubt thief would get it as well.
