For me the original invasion of Southsun Cove was the best example of this, it had a lot of “story” style content that made sense to happen and then go away, and also left a lot of permanent experiences as a result of that storyline.

Another food for thought: Back when we invaded Southsun, we did a lot of “one time” events with the story content. Folks complained that one time wasn’t fair because they would miss it, so we extended the “story” style content so you now have 2-4 weeks to experience it. Does having it around this long take away from the sense of story progression, and make it feel like it should be permanent when it’s taken away? Or would simply having (using the TV analogy) something like TiVo that allows you to see the story you missed balance out this issue?

In my opinion the Southsun Invasion was the wrong way to do Living Story. The whole event chain could have remained and repeat on a timer like The Shatterer or Jormag, it did not justify being temporary in my opinion, it had no impact and there were no consequences from the event (blowing up a lighhouse does not count!). Also the zone remaind more or less empty afterwards.

On the other hand I do think you got things right with Secrets of Southsun, the area changed visibly and there’s actually more content to do in the area now, and even the Karka queen is back. I think you pretty much fixed what went wrong the first time so kudos for that. Though I don’t think removing the instance there was necessary, just leaving it there so players can (re)play it would not have a negative impact on anything in my opinion.

Our take on phasing, and why we never did it to begin with is: the world isn’t progressing, it’s just fake progressing for you and the person next to you isn’t seeing it progress simultaneously. One of the biggest things we wanted to accomplish with Gw2 is that the things that happen do matter, they happen for everyone, and everyone experiences them together. This is really putting the social aspect of the game and immersion, above the personal aspect.

I think for this to hold true, the world needs to actually progress and evolve. Event is finished so it’s gone now is not progression, while Event is finished so here’s how things look now would be.

We blew up the molten facility so it’s gone, but there’s no sign of it ever being there to begin with so it’s a net loss. If it had been replaced with a new instance where players go through the ruins, or a jumping puzzle the above would hold true.

That’s your mistake so Anet won’t do anything about it just like if you accidentally delete or salvage the wrong item. It would be nice of the receiver to return the items in case of errors like this but they are not required to and it’s not against the rules to keep them so a report wouldn’t accomplish anything.

Good job on the patch, great fixes overall, kudos for listening to feedback folks.

Edit: Josh, just read your blog post. Boo on anet for giving you crap about actually being open and communicating with the playerbase the way all devs should. You should be giving communication classes to them!

It’s alright to make mistakes if one is willing to own up to them and work on a resolution as you guys did, I’m sure you’ve all learned from this experience and the next SAB release will be only better for it. Just keep up the good work and don’t get discouraged.

Josh, what about the promise not to make dodge jumping required? I remember a post saying all jumps are designed so they can be done without it since it’s so buggy and can’t be pulled of consistently, yet in W1Z2 Tribulation mode you have to do a mandatory dodge jump from a jumping rock shortly after the first checkpoint.

Also like to say that even if I don’t agree with the design decisions for this iteration of SAB, I do appreciate and respect you for posting here and discussing feedback openly.

Only had time to get as far as the water part in the first zone with the geysers. It was very frustrating mostly because if you fall into the water you’ll keep getting knocked around at random, often having to take up to three hits to get back onto a rock. The geysers also like to disappear just as you jump on them sometimes you get knocked down for no apparent reason even if they are up. The camera in that part didn’t help things either.

I even ended up dying on infantile mode due to the flowers at the end boss tossing you into the pit if you touch them from the wrong angle, which can happen easily as there’s only a small area to stand on.

Really disappointed with the new SAB as world 1 was so great, this just frustrates me like tribulation mode was supposed to. Feels like the game is telling me to buy the cash shop coin really, morose since restarting after a game over now only gives you one life rather than 5 as before.

If it’s like those linked games then it should be doable with a guide. If there’s a pattern to learn then it’s not unfair, just difficult as it should be. To me unfair is something based on luck or random chance.

There is nothing difficult about trial and error. The hardest thing about that type of game is setting aside the time to do it.

The simplest example I can give is a path where you can go left and right, if the left path has an instant dead trap then you just learn to avoid it and take the right one next.

Having the trap appear on a random path each time would be BS and in that case complains about unfairness and fake difficulty would be valid imo.

Targeting circles with blasting staff trait

Shinzan.2908

The targeting circle for spells does not increase correctly when using the elementalist blasting staff trait (expect for when used in the mists).

See below image, first row shows a traited lava font be cast in the mists (working correctly), the second is the same being done in lions arch (showing the bug).

Since this does display in one area, I’d think making it function the same in the rest of them should be a relatively simple fix.

Shinzan.2908

Anet’s release schedule is too slow to pull something like this off. The new dungeon is fun (the rewards need to be less random but that’s another issue entirely), but it took 3 months of boring filler content to get to it and now the only real content they added will be gone in 2 weeks…

The molten facility should be left in the game until anet has something new ready, and it should be content with actual substance and not another 3 months of hammering signs before we get the bits that are actually fun to do.

Even better would be if rather than removing content it was expanded upon, for example by leaving the molten facility in but with unlocked explorable paths to show the aftermath of the living story.

Spell targetting circles...

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Shinzan.2908

Spells which have their area boosted by traits (like lava font + blasting staff on ele) still don’t show a larger circle when casting them in PvE, though it does work correctly in the PvP loby for some reason. Been like that since launch, is this ever going to be fixed? Would think that since it works in one area making it apply everywhere shouldn’t be too difficult.

This makes it sound like any player participating will get 50 silver, the rare drops and a personal guild commendation, but only the guild that kicked the event off will receive a guild merit, correct?

I don’t play subscription games on principle, if I buy a game it should be mine to play whenever.

And that’s even though I spend more money on free games than what a sub would cost, for me it’s about choice and not having to pay even if I don’t feel like playing for a month.

Ranger pet names resetting [Merged]

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Shinzan.2908

Shinzan.2908

This is actually not a bug, it is working as intended. It is not optimal, but to save the names of all of your pets (read: all of everyone’s pets) would require another large name database that ANet did not create. Currently the pet name feature saves the name in the slot, not the pet, so changing out the pet type resets the slot name.

Perhaps someday they will change this, but it is not a bug.

This is pretty much exactly what’s going on.

Tl;dr: we may change this some day, but it’s not going to happen in the near future, and it’s not a bug.

I understand the reasoning behind not keeping a name database for each pet but why reset the slot we do have? If I name my pet in the first slot something then pick a different one the name should remain, not reset.

The guy talking about this mentioned players building for aoe over single target damage, that made no sense to me since there’s no such thing, you are given set skills so it’s not a choice, you’ll have aoe skills whether you want them or not unless you just want to ignore certain weapons entirely… Nerfing them would suck for classes like ele and make a lot of weapon sets for other classes useless too. I’m sure anet doesn’t want everyone to roll a rife war.

Really I wonder why anet decided to go with servers at all. They should have stuck with a single “server” and overflows generated as needed, seeing that’s how they did it in GW1 it’s puzzling they would go back to an outdated system like this again.

I can transfer servers from EU to US now and it takes about a minute, so the technology is there. Since guesting isn’t what we were promised and they said server transfers would remain free until they get it working they should just keep transfers free instead and remove the time limit.

The technology for permanent switching is there. The technology for temporary switching isn’t. It’s really not as simple as just moving something and then moving it back afterwards.

I would be fine with server transfers as they are minus the cost and time restriction. Could meet up with someone on US servers then just transfer back to EU manually.

Clearly states you’ll be able to play on any world you have friends on. The restrictions refer to certain features being unavailable (WvW), not that the worlds you can guest on will be restricted.

Again, do you want everyone to play in one region? Because if one person gets their friends to transfer, they would have to get their friends to transfer and so on so none would be left.

Coordinating to play on the same region just isn’t feasible because if my American friends moved to Euro they couldn’t play with their friends and vice versa. Or do you suggest everyone move to one region leaving the other completely empty?

Because (different from a world transfer) we are not moving your character between data centers, you may only guest on worlds in the same region as your home world. Players on North American home worlds cannot guest on European worlds or vice versa.

This is not what we have been promised! I got friends on American servers I won’t be able to play with at all, that’s just crap and makes this “feature” to me entirely useless. Is this seriously what you have been working on for months and still can’t get it right?

The karka one time event had no impact on the world and there was no reason to make it one time at all. Letting the ancient karka event chain loop every 4 hours or putting it into it’s own instance wouldn’t have changed anything about it.

If a class is hard to play then mastering it should let you do things others can’t or give a slight edge so all the effort pays off. The issue is that the easy to play face roll classes still outperform you as an engi whereas an engineer that is played perfectly and the person knows what they are doing still only manages to do alright and not even close to as good as a warrior spamming hundred blades/kill shots.

Randomness of elixirs fix

Simple idea, instead of making the effects of elixirs random make them conditional. Taking elixir H for an example, instead of giving either regeneration, protection of swiftness, change it so it gives swiftness at 80%, protection at 50% and regen at 25% health. This would preserve the feel of the engineer but instead of luck knowing when to use the elixir would become part of a well executed strategy.

Just did the personal story step where you go up against the mesmer near fort trinity… did Trahearne really have to go on about how he is the real target and the only reason the player character got attacked was to get at him? This would have been a good opportunity to show that even though Trahearne is the marshal your character is the driving force behind the pact, instead he makes it all about himself.

I have been thinking about this and came to the conclusion that making Trahearne be the marshal isn’t an issue, it’s how he’s portraited that bugs me. Take the mass effect series in comparison, commander Shepard gets to take orders from Anderson and Hackett who both outrank him, yet the game still feels like Shepards story and makes clear how important he is.
