If I remember correctly my calcs I lost about 12-15 initiative per minutes to the nerfs (opportunist, the signet and the acrobatics line nerf) and gained 15 initiative to the baseline initiative regen buff. I know I’m somewhat the exception but . . . not a “MASSIVE” buff for some.

It’s not “massive,” I agree, but it’s a great buff since it free-up some skill points that I now enjoy placing in the Trickery trait line.

I’ll switch auto targeting then…
but as this is still a bug, it still needs a fix!

Just remember that it will still happen as long as you have a target selected, regardless of whether it was acquired by auto-targeting or not (I play without auto-targeting and still have this issue).

If you still have this issue, then you are manually turning your character while immobilized. Stop doing that and you won’t have a problem.

[Thief] Mug and CnD change suggestions

Sir Vincent III.1286

If ANet is ever going to look at this I would also prefer the range on Steal in general to be reduced. 900 range instant teleport with a trait for 1500 range is a little ridiculous in my opinion.

450 range (900 with trait) sounds more reasonable to me.

Of course it does, you’ve clearly never played a thief.

What is with you people making pointless blanket statements instead of actually stating why they believe otherwise?

Check my sig. That’s one level 80 for every single class. So as a matter of fact I clearly play a thief.

Now tell me why you disagree with my suggestion or offer one of your own in return. But I get real tired with people that offer absolutely nothing of constructive value.

Your suggestion is neither realistic nor practical. You want to reduce the range yet you have not given a valid reason to why you find it “reasonable.” Why is your “reasonable” opinion carries more weight than evilapprentice.6379’s “reasonable” opinion?

You’re being ridiculous.

[Thief] Mug and CnD change suggestions

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

Proposed Changes:

Mug: Base damage reduced by 50%, the skill now applies 10 stacks of vunerability for 5 sec.

I’m sorry but this is a bone-headed proposition caused by extreme tunnel vision. We already can stack vulnerability through Sundering Strikes. No need for 2 traits doing exactly the same thing.

The first problem with this proposition is the 50% damage reduction. If you know a lot about Thieves, this damage means nothing after it was nerfed to never crit.

Second is the stacks of vulnerability.

To exchange 50% loss of base damage to 10 stacks of vulnerability will only worsen the situation since a Backstab that follows will now be 10% more potent.

If your goal is to curve the damage of a power build, then why on Earth give them 10% more damage?

If you want to suggest a nerf to Mug then remove the damage completely and instead, we knockdown our target for 3s plus the 3k heal. This will eliminate the damage combo of a power build Thief.

Cloak and Dagger: This wapon skill can no longer be a critical hit. CnD applies 3 sec protection on the thief if it hits.

You do realize that CnD applies vulnerability, right? So if your suggestions are implemented, I can apply 13 stacks of vulnerability prior to a Backstab plus the 3s protection. Brilliant! Let’s do that.

I belive the changes I suggested would give more sustain in open combat without totally changing the playstyle, the focus would still be on rather short burst sequences, but the burst would be spread out over a few seconds which would be covered by the protection instead of being on a 2 button combo.

You believe? Would you still maintain the same belief knowing what I just posted? That your assumption that “the burst would be spread out over a few seconds” is nothing but a wishful thinking coming from someone who have not played a Thief?

You’re unknowingly making your situation even worse.

The protection would also promote not to “camp in stealth” but to quickly re-engage more often.

Not necessarily. Stealth trumps Protection buff any day.

The CS nerf was a buffer update so that when they release the crit damage nerf, there will be minimal outcry since most Thief builds have abandoned the CS trait line long time ago.

Bountiful Theft isn’t so good, how you wrote it. […] This trait is too weak to be useful and a shame for the thief class.

I am always conflicted when I see someone ragging on Bountiful Theft.

I want to correct them, because BT has a really fast recharge, gives the stolen boons to nearby allies (nobody EVER seems to realize this), also gives Vigor (again, to allies as well), and makes Sleight of Hand a nearly-unstoppable interrupt. But I also want to keep it quiet, because BT with 30 Trickery is borderline overpowered, and the longer ANet fails to notice it, the better it is for the class.

The whole Trickery line is OP (except Instinctual Response) but I’m not complaining. IMO, all trait line should make the Thief profession OP in some ways because we’re specialist, and so far, in dealing as much damage as possible.

Comprehensive Thief feedback (long)

Sir Vincent III.1286

Before Anet start finagling with the Thief traits and skills again, they first need to define what role they want Thief to be in.

If they choose DPS, then we should see a lot more damage improvements like Might and Fury that can be shared to the group. Then all other skills and traits that doesn’t fall under this role must be purged from our profession.

As we’ve seen in the past, Anet doesn’t know what role they want the Thief to fill and they try hopelessly to make Thief more like a group-friendly profession doing all the wrong things.

If Anet really wants Thief to be group-friendly, then they can start by improving stolen items because to be honest, that’s one aspect that the Thief can bring in a group. All stole items should be a group-wide effect. This way, the Thief can focus on doing what they do best, DPS, and still help out the group by stealing items.

Dervish Profession

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

Dervish is simply an Elementalist with a Scythe. Most of their skills have already been absorbed by the Elementalist (i.e. Aura of Thorns = Ring of Earth).

However, they can bring a lot of playability if their special ability revolves around Wind and Earth prayer magics that focuses on applying Dervish boons (not the general boons).

For example, F1 = Wind, F2 = Earth. When the player press F1, the Dervish says a prayer that infuses himself and his allies with Wind magic. The Wind buff will grant something like;

Against the Wind: Allies block the next attack against them. The attacker suffers from Weakness for 5s.

And the Earth buff will be like,

Ebon Dust: Daze enemies in 300 range for 1s. Dazes enemies are blinded for 5s.

Something like that…I don;t know. But I sure would roll a Dervish even if they only have one weapon set.

Traps are, logically speaking, a one-time use device. To make it viable is to add a lingering effect like they did to Viper’s Trap (poison field) for Rangers.

So a Trip Wire, for example, will create an Oil Slick field for like 3s that makes players get knocked down once the trap is triggered.

Sir Vincent III.1286

This needs to happen,

Too long have we been blocking attack after attack while the thief or Mesmer or other class just sits in stealth like nothing happened, and just continue on attacking until the block ends, while still being stealthed.

I have a better idea, make stealth attacks unblockable.

Logically speaking, you cannot accurately block something you cannot see. Blocking while facing in a general direction will still leave you exposed.

Any and all players that are stealthed should be revealed for the normal revealed time on blocks. A block is a hit, however, It doesn’t count as a hit, this needs to be changed.

Thoughts?

Edit: Removed the small section about blinds/misses/evades.

Or better yet, ok, let’s make stealth attacks revealed on block, but you can only block attacks in a 60 degree cone coming from where you’re facing.

Let’s make sense of everything, deal?

I’m not sure if putting 30 into Trickery is worth it though.

In my experience, the important aspect of Trickery is Cunning. +30% recharge rate to Steal allows for more Kleptomaniac, Thrill of the Crime, and Bountiful Theft (on top of the stolen items). Even moreso if you trait for Sleight of Hand, another 20% recharge reduction to Steal. You can steal every ~20s instead of every 35s.

That to me makes it well worth the 30pts.

Stealth Balancing

The solution is to give stealthy professions better choices by giving them more skills that are not reliant on stealth. Mechanically, Thief are encouraged to go in stealth otherwise they cannot use their sneak attack skills. If Anet remove the stealth requirement on sneak attack and instead based it on position, then more stealth-less builds will be created.

However, stealth builds will still exists but you won’t have to see it often due to build diversity.

When you start wearing exotics and ascended items, the stats are now coming from your gears making the traits less reliable for stats improvement.

Trickery is simply the best source of initiatives.

More initiative = less downtime = more damage.

Then once you become aware, the repeating skills stops, then comes back when you’re focused into the game, especially during a heated fight.

[ALL] Thief - Weapon set balance

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

If we look back at GW1, the build diversity is based on the number of available skills.

Actually it’s based on the number of viable and synergistic skills. There are a lot of skills that pretty much never showed up in a successful build. There are also a lot of skills which were identical to others, and so the build was no different no matter which one you took.

The point is, more skills makes for more builds and the main source of skills are the weapon sets.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have more weapons available on thief (particularly offhand sword, a sniper rifle, and a viable unarmed or fist weapon option). However, I don’t think it’s a balance issue…. rather, it’s a content issue.

The difference between the Necro and the Thief in terms of weapon set is not just 3 weapon sets, rather it’s 15 weapon skill set difference. Now compare the difference between the Warrior and the Thief — that’s 60 weapon skill set different.

How is that not a balance issue when the number of weapon sets available to other profession is significantly greater than what is available to Thieves?

I’d say they’re all within fair range of each other… Other than Warrior, of course, but that’s no surprise.

You do realize that Elementalist have 5 weapon sets multiple of 4 attunements, right?

How is 7 within the fair range of 19 or 20? A fair range would be 10 or 12 — not 7 — wouldn’t you agree?

If we look back at GW1, the build diversity is based on the number of available skills. Since our main skills are based on weapon sets, it just make sense that if Anet is to promote build diversity, is to add more weapon sets which would add more skills, meaning more builds.

CS has a nice initiation stats thanks to Keen Observer and First Strikes, which are bonuses that helps bringing down any target from 100% to 50% HP that can trigger Executioner and Furious Retaliation in a first few attacks. That’s why probably it is viewed as mandatory.

CS is nice. It is not “mandatory” unless you’re in a max-DPS build, owing to the fact that we only have two traitlines with significant direct damage in them. People wildly overestimate how much the stat bonuses actually help in PvE/WvW.

I took that “mandatory” comment as subjective and moved on. But I can see how they can perceive that even though it’s not entirely true.

I find Executioner less and less attractive nowadays because it does nothing if target has 51%-100% HP, so I don’t spec for it anymore. As the days goes by, I now have 0pts in CS and 30pts in Trickery.

Questions about weapon sets

In my experience, you should bring all weapon available and switch up when necessary.

Weapon set specialization is only important in PvP scenario, i.e. tPvP or solo-roaming in WvW. Fortunately, you don’t have to do that in general PvE and WvW.

Here’s my weapon set of choice depending on the situation;

Large group of melee mobs in PvE? Siege engine in WvW?
S/P + Shortbow

Large group of ranged mobs in PvE? Supply camp in WvW?
D/P + P/P

Single target boss mob in PvE? Tower boss in WvW?
D/D + P/P

Boon heavy mob(s) in PvE? Elementalist, Necros, Guardians in WvW?
S/D + any

High toughness mob(s) in PvE? Warrior, Eng in WvW?
P/D + Shortbow

I hope that helps.

Dude! Thieves are OP as it is. With high damage output and EXTREME precision and critical hit chance weapon’s don’t matter! Stealth helps too. Be happy for theif to be amazing anyway.

This is not about being OP or not, this is about expanding the build diversity. With limited choices on weapon sets, most Thieves run the same build.

Do you believe then that it is fair and balance that other professions have access to a wide variety of skills from weapon sets while the Thief profession is singled-out and pigeon-holed into few weapon set choices?

If Anet wants to balance the professions, then Thieves deserve at least 10 weapon sets.

Although I love the trickery tree, why do people prefer a lower dps build over a more bursty type build? If that is the case even, I’m curious of your opinion.

A 10/x/x/x/30 build’s main focus is control and boon-stripping, not DPS. From experience, any profession that relies on boon are rather weak once stripped off of their boons. So as S/D, once you stripped the boons and given it to yourself and to your allies, you basically improved your own DPS by buffing yourself and de-buffing your target.

Since your focus is boon-strip, most builds choose to allocate points into SA to give them a longer staying power to maintain a boon-less target.

A DPS S/D build will always have 30pts in CS, that’s how you can tell what role the build will play.

Which is the opposite of your world which your world is opposite of what is actually true.

I can tell that you never played your p/p build and you never played mine. You made up the build on the spot. All you spew out is “Your build sucks!!111!!!”

While I tell out what is the strength and weakness, tell how to play to play this build correctly, how to cover your weakness and apply the strength of this build.

In other words, you have no idea what your build is about.

Interesting. Where did I “spew” that?

You criticize a build you know nothing about and offered a rather ridiculous GC build as an alternative but when you are called out for being out of your mind you make up things like a little child.

It is obvious that your build wasn’t thoroughly thought out because with such a build, a Thief will require Stealth for protection. Just because that build works for D/x with stealth, doesn’t necessarily make it work for a P/P without stealth.

It is also obvious that you have not played your build by saying nonsense like;

“5k crit damage is nothing, but spamming 5k three times to get 15k damage will kill fully fresh players.

“Even S/P and S/D will die if you shoot first”

While at the same time running a build with only 14k HP and 1980 Armor.

I admitted that my build will die fighting an S/P Thief because I’ve played my build — and I indeed died — and I’m fully aware of why I died.

You, on the other hand, refused to acknowledge how ridiculous your build is, claiming that it will “kill fully fresh players,” a claim that is not based on reality — a claim that you personally have not seen, only speculated.

Another problem with your build is that, not only you have no stealth, you also did not account on subsidizing your survivability with extra Dodge (i.e. taking Feline Grace).

In the end, you’re all damage, no survivability, and boasting that it can kill with 15k damage from 3x Unload. Your first Unload might connect, but you’ll be dead at the end of that first Unload even if you shoot an S/P Thief first.

So judging from your baseless claims, your build have not seen any play time — that, or you’re utterly dishonest.

[ALL] Thief - Weapon set balance

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

Here’s the current number of weapon sets combinations;
Ele – 5 (x4 attunements)
War – 19
Ran – 11
Nec – 10
Gua – 12
Thief – 7
Eng – 3 (+4 kits)(total 6 kits)
Mes – 10

As you can see, the distribution of weapon set number is not balance. Thieves has the least number of weapon set combination that results in limited, often gimmicky, builds.

Suggestions:
Torch (off hand) – this is an appropriate off hand for Thieves. The Torch skills given to Ranger makes more sense on Thieves.

Sword (off hand) – dual-daggers, dual-pistols — where’s dual-swords? Having the dual-wield ability justifies that Thieves a duelist, thus dual-swords are appropriate.

Rifle – long-range weapon is necessary for a lot of encounters in PvE and WvW. The nerf on Thieves shortbow range leaves nothing for the Thieves to use at long-range. Longbow doesn’t makes any sense for Thieves. Rifle skills given to Warrior are more appropriate and makes more sense on Thieves.

I admit, I have no Honor. In Dark Souls for example I kill people on the spot who bow to me before combat during their animation. But then again sinners don’t deserve mercy from a Darkmoon.

I especially consider all warriors sinners and will fight them as unfairly as possible.
If only we have more ways to be honorless cheap dirtbags in combat~ need more thief buffs, like ones to make traps viable.

Trip wire is fun to use. They never suspect being KD’ed for 3s.

May not be the best, but it sure is fun to use.

that build won’t last long against s/d thieves.

lol, yup, and S/P rips this build apart but it can go toe to toe with D/P and Engineers hates this build.

In that case, go big or go home.

Trade all of your survivability for damage. 1,2,4,5 are completely unnecessary unless it is for utility. Just press 333 and watch glass cannons fall. 3-5k crit damage for each 3 you press.

Even S/P and S/D will die if you shoot first.

No thank you, “go big or go home” is a motto of noobs. I’m sure after you killed an S/P or an S/D after shooting first will make for a great story.

OP makes it sounds like it’s difficult for Mesmers to create illusions.

If this is true, then finally the bug is fixed. Illusions sometimes follows us in Stealth or continued to be targeted by them while in Stealth.

Mesmer thinks that this is a Thief only buff, but Mesmer-vs-Mesmer is no fun when illusions can tell which is the real one or where the Stealthed Mesmer is.

Thief PvP build advice

Sir Vincent III.1286

Which would you say is best for solo queue; d/p or s/p?

Probably S/P. Virtually everybody runs D/P.

Actually seems to me like S/P has been steadily gaining in popularity in soloq lately. I think they are both decent for soloq – you trade a bit of burst from the d/p set for some extra survivability options in the s/p set.

Its been gaining popularity, but it’s still far from the level of usage that D/X builds see.

S/P doesn’t have the same level of mobility you’ll find in a D/P build.

Maybe if Infiltrator’s Strike is a ground targeted with a small AoE cripple that it may gain a lot of mobility power — but that’s a big “maybe” and “if”.

Right now, Heartseeker Strike is really great for both offensive and defensive mobility.

Am I understanding Burn, correctly?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

As with all damaging conditions, the damage ticks are determined by whatever stack does the -most- damage and has time left. Burning damage doesn’t get immediately overwritten.

Except there’s a queue system where older applications are knocked off when it goes over the stack limit which makes it easy to sabotage the DPS of the stack and the sabotage stacks difficult to get rid off once they are applied.

The older applied burning doesn’t get knocked off. When it reaches 9 stacks, it stops accepting new stacks until the first, older, stack finishes.

“However, there is a cap at 9 stacks for this condition, meaning that the duration for this condition will only be increased by the first 9 sources that apply it, and all stacks that would normally increase the duration beyond the first 9 stacks will be ignored.
