Cost efficiency is using all of your resources (which have costs) to produce a product or service with a maximum outcome. It’s simply using your existing resources efficiency.

No, it’s using as few resources as you can to get maximum return. Cost efficiency benefits the company. It only benefits the customer if they pass the savings to the customer by lowering costs. & that sure as heck isn’t going to happen.

No. It’s using your existing resources the best so that you can to get the most optimal return. It’s not about cutting product features.

I can’t see where I wrote cutting product features, can you point that out for me?

You specifically didn’t but the OP did so I was using that in the context of this thread and subsequently the post.

What I find interesting about the article is the following:

  • There was a large dip from the Q3 2014 US/EU Sales by Region, from 38,622M KW to 25,818M KW. This was a decrease of 12,818M KW. In that period, Wildstar sales declined from 16,007M KW to 1,727M KW. That’s a drop of 14,280, 1.462M KW more than the overall decrease. GW2, on the other hand, increased by slightly more than 1M KW in that period. This means that the decrease in US/EU sales is all on WS.
  • Q2 2015 GW2 sales were higher than Q3 14, and if you bother to look them up, higher than Q1 15 and Q4 14 as well as the Q3 15 figure show in the article. What caused this? The figures don’t show us, but HoT prepurchase opened on June 23, 7 days before the quarter ended. One possible conclusion is that sales spiked due to immediate adopters buying HoT. Sales then tailed off a bit in Q3 15, though that figure is still higher than Q3 14, Q4 14 and Q1 15.
  • Expectations of increased sales by GW2 in 4Q15 are most likely expectations that HoT sales after the XPac’s release will be up, along with Christmas gifting of HoT, and/or gem items.
  • Much more revealing numbers come from comparisons of sales of GW2 in prior years (i.e., 2012 and 2013). Those drops are much more pronounced, and likely represent the game aging. It’s interesting to note that GW2 sales in Q2 and Q3 15 when HoT was on sale did not get as high as 1Q14 (25,142M KW). From this it’s possible to conclude that a B2P sales model relying only on XPac sales is not going to be all that lucrative when your fan base is not measured in the 10’s of millions that some other games enjoy.

All that said, I find the OP to be heavy on conclusions, but short on analysis. Questions I’d ask are:

  • What effect did ANet taking over the publishing of GW2 from NCSoft have on the financial arrangements between the parent and subsidiary? Obviously, NCSoft is still reporting GW2 sales as part of their overall package. However, what effect did this have on NCSoft expenses?
  • For that matter, what effect did the change have on ANet’s internal costs? How did that change affect ANet operating expenses, and thus their design strategy?
  • What does “publishing GW2” mean with regard to whether NCSoft cost saving measures have any effect on ANet?
  • What effect did a myriad of other factors, such as choice of engine and the various design tools available to ANet developers mean for content production?
  • What effect does the fact that many MMO players want to play “their” MMO a lot (many hours a day, 7 days a week, month after month after year) have on MMO developers (not just ANet) choosing to resort to “an artificial life extender as THE “retention” tool”?
  • What effect does the fact that the physiology of “fun” means that — for most people, at least — no content can retain its attraction indefinitely based on its own merits?

I could go on, but perhaps the point is clear. These answers are not available, and without them, the OP’s conclusions are suspect. I find it unlikely that an MMO failing to provide “simply amazing content, with amazing professions to play, that is highly repayable on mere fun factor alone” is based simply on a cost-cutting measure.

This is not to say that there is not a segment of the player-base which is dissatisfied with Anet’s production of the game. This is true of every MMO I’ve ever paid any attention to, so it’s no surprise that it’s so for GW2.

I gave specific examples of the pieced together development by what we see being implemented. There is no speculating… Fact that we have a mini raid and no legendary armor to even view is not a speculation. Nor is 1 wvw map while the rest of wvw is in production. Nor profession neglect that has been pointed out many times in and out of these forums… Those are facts… And that’s where “cost efficiency” come into play…

I predict fourth quarter profit figures will be abysmal. I’m not buying the expansion unless it’s offered at a substantial discount. I feel sorry for all who got conned.

Profits will be up.

I’m actually glad I bought the expac right away because I was able to do all the content while there were boat loads of players on each map… I completed all mastery stuff (except a couple of the last ones because I’m saving mastery points) with ease… I also have all HP on most characters and all elites unlocked across 8 characters…

I’d suggest buying now while there are still players on these maps… If you wait until a sale then you’ll be kicking yourself for not jumping on the bandwagon now…

You mean twist the definition to mean something entirely different than what it actually means?

No, cost savings to fill the coffers instead can be seen… You are not paying attention to the game and all the messages and areas talked about.

I’m not going to negotiate the precise definition of “cost efficiency” because those are just words used to spin doctor what is truly happening… The quote I used was for a conference call to investors and shareholders… It’s a business call, not a message to gamers…

Yeah, good old “cost-efficiency”…
Nobody takes pride in their work anymore, and those that do, end up getting laid off due to “cost-efficiency” as well…
That’s alright, when a product shows signs of scrimping by, I usually use my own form of “cost-efficiency” by spending my money elsewhere. Sadly, that doesn’t actually teach the lesson it should to companies. Instead of making better products, they just churn out new things in hopes of snagging some money before the hype dies, then churn out the next thing. Rinse, repeat.

Yup. Cost efficiency is a very prevalent thing now a days… I understand the benefits of not being wasteful and doing things the smart way, but yeah, the “scrimpiness” is in full effect here in many ways…

There is something that stands out to me as a customer and I’ve had this feeling for a while now… I really see a “slim” game here with some great elements, but it’s still “slim” and under developed in many areas. Now I won’t go into specific details of profession development, combat aspects, content, reward structures, bltc/store stuff… but I will say this…

I could see what’s happening with the game and this is a clear confirmation…

“Of note is that the third quarter report stretches only to the end of September, thus predating both WildStar‘s shift in business model and Guild Wars 2‘s first expansion release. During the conference call, NCsoft said it has been focused on cost-efficiency and expects fourth quarter revenues to improve, referencing Guild Wars 2 specifically. Fans of the aforementioned games should keep their eyes peeled for next quarter’s results.”

“cost-efficiency” means reinvesting the bare minimum to turn some profit in this case.

Sadly, this can be seen in many aspect of the game and why EVERYTHING is bltc (gem sales) centric… Don’t worry, I understand that this is a play for free game and they need to earn a profit somehow…, but that’s not the point here or the issues I’m talking about…

“Cost-efficiency” is the reason why we only have a single new map now for wvw and nothing else…

“Cost-efficiency” is the reason why the raid is so tiny and boring, thus needing to be gated by these boss mechanics… and why we don’t even have a preview of legendary armors that were touted as the ultimate rewards…

“Cost-efficiency” is the reason why events like winter festival are so underwhelming… and the focus is more on material and karma “sinks” (for very very very poor rewards) and taking away, as opposed to meaningful rewards in return for these “sinks” and “giving” back to the loyal fan base that has been here supporting this game…

“Cost-efficiency” is why MEANINGFUL profession development and combat system improvements have been neglected despite these areas being the ABSOLUTELY MOST IMPORTANT AND VITAL ASPECTS of this game…

“Cost-efficiency” is why we are very “meta” content “light” and why everything it turning into mastery and reward tracks…. So instead of simply amazing content, with amazing professions to play, that is highly repayable on mere fun factor alone… we have an artificial life extender as THE “retention” tool. Now I don’t mind the reward and mastery track stuff, I believe they are good, but here it is used to mask gaping holes and flaws instead of being a ++enhancement.

I hope the mentality and over arching goal to “just save money” through “cost-efficiency” doesn’t command gw2 2016… because that is not doing this game or the players any justice… Plus it doesn’t look good either to those paying attention.

I would like to suggest that after the wvw update is put in that this year become the year of very very very serious profession improvements and development. Also, better reward structures and better bltc items and services…

Edit- I would like to add one thing. I fully understand that fantasy is the most popular genera for mmos, but there was a gem of a game that was shut down by ncsoft. That game was city of heroes… To date, there is not one, not a single one game, to ever capture the “heroic feeling” for players individually and as a team. That game made characters central to the entire experience, and still is hands down the absolute best “profession” and “powers” design of any game period. There is no game on the market, to this day, that can match all things “profession” and roles and combat… Those design structures and frame works are what to use to rebuild professions and combat here if you (Anet) want to have THE most kick kitten video game out in the mmo universe…

So as of October we have 3.1 million concurrent monthly users…

Anet wants to push esports which I support, but you can’t have esports with these profession/class designs and certain poor combat designs and major imbalances and limited build viability and subpar role designs and very few meta worthy builds and lots of other not so good stuff…

3.1 million is even more reason and incentive to have ncsoft dump more cash into Anet to improve profession and make some great things happen with the game…. Major profession and combat development will allow esports to grow… It will improve the experience for players in all aspects of the game… Better $ reinvestment will help to finish up projects and make it easier to build some awesome new things and systems and qol features…

GW2 can get there, but it can’t get there on budget tires…

So I see 1 desert bl, 1 revamped alpine map, 1 new snow map and a visually updated EB map…

This will be the set up, not all three sides being the exact same map.

Let’s say Anet did alliances, based off of wvw participation numbers balancing, with servers and cut ALL map numbers in half with a megaserver system?

Before the holiday *SE*ason is fully upon us we wanted to give you all a sneak peek of some changes that are coming to WvW. Befo*R*e we jump into the changes, we just want to make it *VER*y *C*lear that the changes y*O*u’ll read about below are not a part of the big World vs World update that we’ve previously *M*ent*I*oned. This update is the first of what we hope are more regular updates to the existing core of World vs. World. We are looki*NG* forward to *S*haring the details *O*f the bigger W*O*rld vs World project with you in the future, but we’re *N*ot quite ready yet.

And now for that sneak peek:

  • Objectives upgrades will no longer be automatic based on time. They will upgrade based on dolyaks that reach them. Smaller groups can now prevent an objective from upgrading by preventing dolyaks from reaching that objective.
  • Supply cost for all catapults are being reduced by ten supply. The layout of the Desert Borderlands map has increased the number of catapults required to take some objectives. We agree with your feedback that also increasing the cost of catapults pushed the balance too far towards defense so we are tuning that more towards offense.
  • Points per kill will be turned on and kept on. This is to more directly recognize the contribution that fighting other players adds to the success of the world.
  • The number of players who can rally off a single kill has been reduced from five to one. Players will also no longer be able to revive defeated players while in combat. You still will be able to revive downed players while in combat. Both of these changes are designed to help fights resolve and to give smaller, more skilled groups a better chance against larger groups.

Please let us know what you think of these changes. We’re going to hold off on picking a release date until we have a chance to review your feedback, but we’d like to target early 2016. So please add your feedback about these proposals to this thread.

Profession here are way underdeveloped and neglected and more one dimensional…

I like the general feeling of combat and moment and attacks, but I feel way too restricted in many ways when playing.

Professions and combat are my number one concern here and always has been. Our characters are the “life blood” and core to alllllll else, and we can see the minimal resources and effort devoted to all things profession here… Don’t get me wrong, I know a lot of work went into the game, but the word “effort” means “love” so to speak.

I personally get the feeling that professions were built more for the devs and ease of coding time, not for the “fun factor” and flexibity and long term retention of players/end users… Does that make sense?

I spent a long time playing a different ncsoft game and was blown away by all things character… It had absolutely amazing character, combat, movement, power/skill, role… designs and you really really felt like a “hero” individually and as a team, and encounters felt really really really amazing… Such fast paced fun and had all the systems to back it up…

Gw2 is better in some ways, but in the profession/class/character and combat department, it’s really “meh” feeling compared…

I really felt the “love” poured into “professions” there, but here… nope. It all feels pretty “empty”…

Yeah those bonuses are meaningless, nobody really cares.

Most important thing that needs to happen is incentive, not a forced “incentive”, to get more players in there… Personal rewards and personal loot gains and personal character progress is the hook that most players care about… Not some % number that they could care less about.

Proposal does shake up the population, but keep in mind the following:


All Players are allowed to return to their Old Server transformed into New Globe

Reboot allows Communities to re-form around Time Zone & Language

Time Zone & Language helps to Label the Globe Community that forms there

It helps players choose the right Globe to call Home

Time Zone Label can be changed at a Globe’s Annual Voting event

Time Zone & Label Mechanics Do Not prevent players from doing anything in WvW

Anet is not going to shake up the entire game jut for the wvw players… 90% don’t do it rule for anything pvp related… Nor will they give out free transfers game wide…

Do you understand anything about the technology behind servers btw?

Edit- So the devs have been working on wvw for a year already and have a team of engineers working on it… Do you realistically think ncsoft and Anet are going to throw away a year worth of A LOT of money and A LOT of people hours to do this idea?

You want Anet to completely rearrange the ENTIRE gw2 playerbase for wvw when 90% of players don’t care about wvw AT ALL…

Thats tha main problem, IMHO.
I wanted to propose relics like in DAOC, but they should split PVE again for that to work…i was away for 2y and it shows, lol.

But thats definitely way to go, give PVE players something worthy to enter WVW

Yeah, you can’t shake up the 90% because of a dying game mode…

I agree, there needs to be some very strong incentives to draw and keep players because it’s simply not worth the time at all right now for most players…

I understand that “spam” is an issue, as is using the lfg tool for unintended purposes, but I honestly don’t see an issue with discussing things in chat that don’t involve breaking the rules or any form of ingame NDA…

When are players allowed to discuss Star Wars? After the entire playerbase has verified they have seen it?

Are players allowed to discuss real life stock market stuff if they choose?

I’m not being sarcastic, I’m just wondering where these fine lines are? I would hate for map chat to turn into one person mentioning Star Wars then players jumping on them saying… “The devs said you can’t talk about Star Wars 7 so I’m reporting you”, then customer service taking the time to review every Star Wars related report needlessly…

One again, “spam” I get because it’s “spam”, but to discuss something in chat that doesn’t break the current rules or any ingame NDA is not wrong by any means…

Edit 2- I do respect everyone’s opinion as well, but simply minimizing the chat window is a solution to seeing any spoilers… I understand spam is not good, as is harassment, but this is a slippery slope discussion… Ignore is also an option available too instead of jumping through CS hoops…

The report functions are also severely lacking, that needs to be addressed first I think.

Edit 3- and I love you Gaile, you helped us defeat the mighty Jormag once and personally saved my life when that foul beast gave me a mortal wound… Also, thanks for not using pony bow that day too…

I fully understand your proposals, it’s not necessary to requote… Your plight to save server identity is then destroyed to reform into the same individual failing model we already have…

The alternative does the same except has a healthier immediate and long term outcome…

Your globe idea does nothing to save or move wvw forward… You see all the same problems but then reintroduce the same problems all over and some new ones…

You want to save server identity, yet admit this would change it…

You think time zones will work, yet they won’t…

NA needs to be lumped together in some fashion…

The other side of the pond needs to be lumped together in some fashion…

Segregation had not worked for 3 YEARS! THREE… Eotm was one big experiment… And one that passed the test by all accounts because bodies are there…

Tier 1 (where you admit players are shuffling up to in order to find people to fight) is not an indication of a healthy gw2 wvw PLAYERBASE…

You don’t look at things as a whole… That’s the flaw in your thinking…

I brought up an alternative to your idea yet you kept saying “no, we need to save server identity”… Yet here you are saying… “Yes, it will change server identity”…

Difference is that 3 years of single server has already show its flaws… You have good ideas in general, but that doesn’t mean your solutions are good…

Your medicine fix is the wrong one…

Also, I bring up the fact the teams have equal players on each side and you keep quoting “fan” observer numbers… If you can’t admit the difference then where do these discussions go?

You say server transfers are important to revenue, yet you want Anet to give everybody free transfers?

You want Anet to completely rearrange the ENTIRE gw2 playerbase for wvw when 90% of players don’t care about wvw AT ALL…

It’s nice to have a discussion, but we can’t have a discussion if you don’t answer the tough questions I’m asking… We can’t have a discussion if you just keep quoting the same things over and over either… I read it… I understand completely what you are asking for…

You must take opposing feedback and learn my friend…

We see the same problems, and Einstein was right… There is the difference…

Edit- and right now, your current wvw is down by 40 and sitting mid field while you’re calling out players to run in circular patterns instead of to the goal… Your wvw will lose if you keep doing a different version of the circular pattern play…

You might be right…existing WvW Communities will get Reset, but would hopefully re-form around the best Time Zone & Language for each Globe’s population.


Population Reboot

All Players are allowed to return to their Old Server transformed into New Globe

Reboot allows Communities to re-form around Time Zone & Language

Time Zone & Language helps to Label the Globe Community that forms there

It helps players choose the right Globe to call Home

Time Zone Label can be changed at a Globe’s Annual Voting event

Time Zone & Label Mechanics Do Not prevent players from doing anything in WvW


Time Zone/Language Label

Globes are Labeled after a Time Zone. This Time Zone Mechanic is only a Label

Communities Form around this Label

Also, there is a Language mechanic to help properly Label a Community that forms for each Globe

New Players before choosing a Globe…are shown the Language preference distribution of its population…primary & secondary Languages of players for the Globe

Local & International Communities Form around Globes using these Labels

Time Zone & Label Mechanics Do Not prevent players from doing anything in WvW.

“Existing communities will get reset”… So your plan resets communities and so called “server pride” anyway… Yet keeps us in the same individual server failing model….

Yeah… If you can’t see the flaws of your own system and arguments I’m really sorry

If you can’t distinguish fans from players I’m sorry too…

Your entire model fails to help resurrect wvw in any way and would be a complete waste of resources at this point unfortunately…

Your solutions are not realistic and don’t address the main problems we have already seen over 3 YEARS… They cause more problems and headache for zero net gain…

Einstein has a famous phrase… It applies to your globe idea…

The devs are going to keep the ponds seperate…

It’s all ok peeps, it’s all ok. Y’all will come to love megaserver/alliance/whatever wvw…

Let’s not over worry about this and that and the other… Devs will figure it all out, but the most important issue is having players playing and filling up these maps… You need players to have wvw in the first place and you need as equal numbers as possible to have a healthy competitive setting…

If you all can’t see that, then there is no hope…

Megaserver WvW Fix?

Eotm is always busy…

Wvw is mostly dead except for EB

Megaserver wvw doesn’t mean megaserver eotm…

Megaserver is a player pooling system….

Seperate the two mentally…

Eotm 1 map…

Wvw 4 maps with objectives that count toward ppt numbers combined and the place where tournaments are run…

Plus… Lots of action and fights happens in eotm… Don’t hate it just because it’s more fast paced and rewarding than wvw was and is…

Wvw is slow paced and boring as all get out compared…

But hey, if you like big empty maps where some servers are completely outnumbered, then I can see why you hate eotm…

Your sport references don’t work at all in this context and wvw is not “just starting out”… We are 3 years into product and wvw life, and wvw failed under the segregated server system… Segregated “globes” won’t help, nor free transfers…

All you have to do is complete the jumping puzzle 3 times, and you have until Jan 12….the 10k drinks has been changed so that it can be done until next Wintersday. The jumping puzzle takes around 5-10 mins to complete each time.

Ppk won’t matter when you have sides more equal because of megaserver/alliance stuff.

You add grind to prolong content… That’s all Anet does… I get that they don’t want players just burning through things, but this game is profession and combat and content shallow… It’s reward track online essentially to extend the life of things…

Trust me, I understand the “balance” of stuff.. Just Anet balances things more to the wrong side consistently. Most people are not fooled by this.

Gw2 has some great qualities obviously, but more flaws and empty holes than anything…

It’s a C grade game overall.

I understand. My perspective is that seasonal events should be fun. I don’t mind “sinks” at all, but holiday events should be more geared toward “fun” and “giving” as opposed to “sinking” and “taking”…

It’s a balance, but Anet is failing that balance pretty horribly. This event doesn’t say “thanks for such a great year loyal players and customers”… It’s screams… “Gimme gimme gimme” instead… Transparent.

Please Anet DON’T remove the requirement of doing the jumping puzzle 3 times….you already extended the drinking of 10k drinks for a whole year.

^ why don’t we give everyone a full set of ascended gear? Why don’t we put ghostly infusions in a vendor for 1 gold each? Why have all the sinister accessories be locked behind story achievements? Why don’t we just give out legendaries for logging into the game?

It won’t affect anyone.

If don’t like the JP, don’t do it. You don’t need that one shoulder skin. I don’t enjoy swearing aloud at my monitor for a hour straight either and so I don’t have any intentions of completing them but you don’t see me going on the forums and calling it to be made easier.

Nor would it affect you if players had a second option available to doing the achievement for winters presence…

You are also embellishing things to make an argument and that argument falls flat.

This event has a limited time frame unlike all those things you mentioned, plus this is a holiday event that is supposed to be inclusive to ALL players and to thank them by doing something nice and festive for them…

The enemy is the enemy. Fights are fights. Duels can be done without disruption in custom spvp instances. There is no such thing as “ganking” in wvw. Players zoned into wvw knowing the rules of the zone. Winning trumps anyone’s perceived notion of honor or chivalry.

I personally feel that the entire event and rewards are just designed to be a time sink, karma sink and gold sink… not as a truly fun year end event for players…

Least they could do is offer better rewards for snowflakes, karma and gold.

They even took away the recipe to make gifts and took all the old rewards from the old wintersday gifts and slapped a high karma cost to them.

They are selling gathering tools that provide snowflakes but there is not a proper snowflake sink… Meanwhile the bltc already has a bajillion snowflakes just sitting there…

There are vendors in that corner of DR but you can’t buy things off them because they require a completely different currency.

They could at least put a snowflakes, karma and gold value to these vendors… Do something nice for players by putting in the mist weapon vendor from wvw and a dungeon vendor too, and do the same snowflake, karma and gold thing for items…

There are tons of rewards the devs could offer as a one time yearly thing…

Very sad…
