Yea, don’t play WvW myself, but with the access to different stats (easier then being forced to 1 amulet) I assume that they would be a lot more powerfull.
I used to run a 0 15 0 25 30 d/d build with Zerkers in pvp and poison on swap sigil. Could beat most of the D/D eles who were running FOTM builds. They were easy to distinguish, they died, quite quickly (1 to 3mins instead of never) lol.

After that I had a S/F, signet setup, which has been butchered by anet now, but it had 100% protection as its main defence and was full zerker and could take on most mediocre D/D eles.

I just hate that /D has so much of our class built into it. It has bunker, roamer, damage and control. The /F has control and projectile punish, that’s about it. They need to do something here I think. Making the Focus the desired bunker weapon and the /D the desired Damage / Roaming weapon would be a nice start.

This leads me to my actual topic:
(Note: Everything I say in my posts is mostly pvp related.)

Unconventional attacks / Openers
A predicable ele is as good at damage / defending as a dead ele.
Getting stuck in particular rotation that is the same as every other eles rotation or building you build to every other eles build can be a bad idea. If I had a gun and you had a shield and every fight we had I opened by shooting you in the head, then every fight you would counter by raising your shield to protect your head every time and I would be down a bullet (bar the first 1 or 2 when we first met). However, if I shot you head the first 2 or 3 times, then, expecting you to block you head with your shield, I shot you in the leg, then we would have the opposite outcome.

The same is true for RTL Updarft combo. If you are a fast moving invisible (due to bug) sprinting mist man or a ball of lighting, I’m gonna dodge as you reach me and your down an updraft. If you do this every fight then you will always be down an updraft and I will still have mine (d/d ele vs d/d ele here).

Daphoenix goes on about openers, I’ll add a bit here.
Lighting flash into updraft, your foe was on the advance, now you are and you can get some damage in (burning speed/drakes breath and fire grab).

How about we start in earth then head lighting without wasting out blast finisher, or after our might stack combo? So we start with in earth (either at the start of the fight or after might combo) then we use our magnetic grasp (earth 3) we follow this up by changing to air during then we get a free updraft on our foe who cant dodge without using a skill or condition removal due to the immobilize. If you started the fight this way the you can go fire for fire 3 into fire 5, or even to water to get the chill 3 off before your foe recovers.

What about some RTL then lighting flash (the then is very important, if you try to LF straight after RTL it will bug out and you will go nowhere) then earth 3 to get up close and personal and perhaps throw in an earth 2 into earth 4. So you’ve put a bit on cd, but you have traveled to your foe, saved you updraft (you can even save you earth 4 as well if you want to).

Just used updraft into burning speed? You foe knows there is a flame grab coming after this, how about a mix up, don’t use the flame grab, use fire 4 then your might stack combo, or even earth 3 fire for a nifty fire shield, buffs and then a free un-dodgeable (unless they blow a skill) KD and churning earth might stack combo.

You might say, he was on the ground and you could have got a free fire grab, sure, but using a long high damage cd at the start of the fight puts you foe on the defensive but puts you out toward the end of the fight (unless the fight will last longer the the cd). If you save your fire grab, you can use fire 2 then fire 5 later to burst your foe down. Heck you might even still have some good stacks of might.

Why do you use cleansing fire and not mist form or armour of earth like everyone else Slasher? That’s a good question, with a simple answer, cleansing fire and lighting flash have the shortest cds and therefore I can get my buffs up quicker. MF I don’t use in Tourneys because the point will neutralize too quickly when I bunker and its cd is horrid. Amour of earth, that is a skill I use in tourneys instead of cleansing fire, unless I decide not to run a summon weap, its too good to pass up in bunker situations, but unfortunately it doesn’t last long for its cd.

If I’m not fighting a condition class I use my can trips offensively, no-one expects a cleansing flame, swap, fire grab (till now) or a fire grab with cleansing wave during. Or the lighting flash updraft combo yet.

Mix it up guys, do something different and confuse you foes. Doing the same stuff and running the same build makes you too predictable. And as I said, a predictable ele (anyclass even) is as good as a dead ele.

I assume you mean “1 – D/D could tank over 5 people and kill half” (snipped and edited by me) is directed toward WvW? Because that isn’t true in sPvP unless vs 5 really bad people (sure you could bunker v5, but not kill them). D/D bunker build was that, a bunker build. The D/D builds that people started running towards the end if it reign were not bunker builds. They were zerker builds who’s aim was to confuse your enemy expecting a paper towel hitting them in the face then you open up with your death lasers.

The reason people complained about the original build is because you could take on 5 people and not be killed. Then they started seeing these higher damage eles and thought it must be the same build, complain more. Mean while back in ele town, 2 different builds, 1 that could tank 5 guys and 1 that could take 1, maybe 2 but destroy them (other bunker D/D eles included).

@OP. With warrior, all you have to do to level is take GS and sword. Take healing signet and use your GS to kill everything and your sword for movement on 2 (since there is no weapon swap cd out of combat you can keep doing this).

No. Too many other issues to fix first.

I don’t think this applies to achievements. After all there are only so many devs that work on balance / bug fixes (apparently the same devs) there are others that could work on this.

Also to the people complaining about how PvEers will come by to get free achievement points … Step 1, rank lock achievements, Step 2 problem solved.

Elementalist:
Move Cleansing wave from the offhand Dagger to the Focus. Revert the c/d change on Ride the Lightning.
This will help to push the focus to being the bunker weapon, whist allowing the offhand dagger to be the roaming / damage weapon.

Fix our bugs from release.

5 point Progression Conquest, if that’s a name for it. Each team must cap points in an order, with the middle point being fought over, once capped a team can push onto the enemies home point.

So point Red spawn … 1 2 3 4 5 … Blue Spawn
Red takes 1 then 2 then 3.
Blue takes 5 then 4 then 3.
Red cannot take 4 till they own 1 2 and 3 or 5 until they own 1 2 3 and 4
Same for blue, they cannot take 2 without 5 4 3 and cant take 1 without 5 4 3 and 2.

This requires defence on point 2 and 4, and TDM builds on point 3, to push the enemy off. Defense on 2 (red) and 4 (blue) is important incase the middle is lost.

This game mode would not have downed, but not rally. When you are downed you either have a friend help you or you heal yourself or die.

Positive feedback for Anet:
Push bug fixes over nerfs / buffs (unless fixing something very broken). Some of these bugs have plagued us since release.

And on the topic of fixing things, any changes en-route for the Elementalist focus. You know, since the off dagger already does damage, bunker and movement and the focus does projectile protection. Suggestion … move cleansing wave to the focus, reset RTL to 1200 range and 20 sec cd, make the focus the bunker weapon and the off dagger be the roaming and damage.

Fast reaction times means I teleport/stun break and dodge before any phoenix arrive, as the ele needs to be at close range to use updraft I’d say you need more battle awareness, seeing as visible lightnings around his wrists should give you enough indication of what the ele can do at that moment

Or the air buff on his buff portrait, which you must look at from time to time.

I’m not ingame so I can’t post a screen. My ele is Violet Winged shoulders, chest and arms and feathered pants, booties and helm. Off colour is Illuminate? gold.

I don’t play wvw, so I don’t need to test there (yet). I find the best way to test a build (pvp)) is to try 1v1 vs all different builds, then incorporate into 5v5 non zerg hotjoin (hard to find) to see how it runs. However, if I am testing a duel build (2 characters) I will go straight to 5v5 or 8v8 games, zerg or not.

Spoken as someone who wasn’t around for beta when ele was actually good. Trust me, we’ve gotten weaker and weaker with each patch.

F2 based of off-hand is something I brought up before. But I would like to see new F abilities if they brought this out. Having Axe Mace for example should have Eviscerate and a new F ability for the off mace.

Fire Aura would be more interesting to me if it applied burning in an aoe around yourself, perhaps something like one second of burning every second during its duration? Not as needed, but the other auras could have similar effects like Magnetic aura applying cripple, frost aura applying chill, and lighting aura applying weakness.

Do you mean in addition to its current function. If it just did burning in an aoe around you then ranged foes would be find when kiting you (or fighting at ranged with sceptre / staff for example)

Its unfortunate that the mists don’t offer a WvW training area, or that WvW doesn’t offer this, where you can mix and match gear for free. Using a build editor can only give you an idea, using the build is where it all comes down to.

Fortunately for me I intend to run the same build as my pvp build, so its only the stats I need to worry about. Since I don’t intend on doing anything outside of my pvp build I don’t really need more then 2 or 3 sets. Gold Find, Zerker and Cleric (for staff support)

To me it will come down to the skin and how much it costs. Was looking at the Eye of whoever it was taken from sceptre …. so much money, even to make it (time is money, 2 jobs is not much time), back to zenith skins :/. Definantly going for Cultral T3 but atm I will stick with Winged Chest Sholders and Gloves and Feathered Pants, Boots and Head. Dyed Violet and Illustrious? (the gold colour).

BTW, I hate white dye with a passion. In guildwars 1 you had to mix dyes to make a certain colour. I made whit with 3 silver and 1 gold. Then white dye came out about a month later … all of my armour could be dyed for the price of 1 of those mixed dyes. Now I stick with purple dye, cheaper to buy them all then buy white lol.

The reason I like Buildcraft is because you get a nice set of stat summaries on the side and it allows you to manually edit the stats as needed. It’s also pretty accurate and predicting condition damage and it lines up perfectly for me. This makes it perfect for comparing X instead of Y to see what kind of increases you will see and what the costs are.

The only downside is because buildcraft is never updated anymore things like the new Charged Quartz Crystals have to be manually plugged in. For example Signet of Earth is dated unfortunately and it is only listed as 90 instead of 180 so you can add in 90 Toughness and it’ll update your Effective HP.

Its the layout that I dislike. I like seeing my traits lined up like they are ingame. And my skills lined up like in game.

Build craft does allow you to see everything though without having to mouse over.

All teachers of all gametypes are welcome. However I find that tPvP players generally make the best teachers, and personally I start off many of my students in the Necro school in PvP, so that they can theory craft/learn without having to spend ridiculous amounts of gold.

Right? I’ve spent soooo much money and have 6 sets of gear and then the cost for the bags to carry all that gear!

I have 1 set of gear for my 80 ele, infact, the skins I brought for that gear cost more then the gear did lol. You can tell I’m hardcore PvE

Conquest/point capture just does nothing but promote the bunker burst or gfto mentality, its a really poorly balanced mode that pretty much does zero to promote build diversity or team strategy.

SPvP feels more like AB than anything.
Only not all that fun.

GW1’s PvP was just so much more diverse and enjoyable.

This is why I have stopped play tPvP, cant get anyone from my team to play it due to the play mentality and locked in builds.

GW1 I could run a barrage all ranger build, or a all trap rangers build and still do reasonably well (not as good as non pug teams but still).

The lamest thing about GW1 was the rank discrimination, sorry you cant join use because your rank 1 and we want rank 1billions. And so you stayed at rank 1 (the problems of not joining GW1 on release).

[IDEA] Progressive Tournaments

So here is an idea I have cooked up, progressive tournaments. Basically you fight, you win, you go back into the queue and you fight again.

However. The build you and your team picks when you enter is locked for the full duration, no changing, even when waiting in the mists.

Each progressive tournament gives better rewards. You can only progress 5 tournaments in a row.

When a team reaches their 3rd and 5th and announcement is made in all chat so that people can click a link an spectate.

Remove Dust Devil from Scepter and put Magnetic Aura instead.

That would make the S/F a bit mean to those poor rangers, 2 reflects and projectile destroy, I like it.

Water / Arcane for defences (boon on swap attunement V in arcane is very nice) Water is for water 15 when you get that second trait line unlocked (and soothing mists)

Air if you want Air I Zephers boon, very good with D/D

Earth has a nice 10% damage within melee now as well as that extra 21 toughness.

and Fire is pretty meh at end game, haven’t run it low levels to tell you how it goes (other then Lava Tomb so I will always rally against melee).

How often do we get balance patches?

Usually 1 per month
The second one in the month is usually to fix the bugs the first one brought out.

I would like some bug fixes before balancing patches, but oh well, looks like I’m stuck with the same bugs from day 1.

With all the crap that gets tossed around.

This is still the most fun PVP I’ve ever had. The ability to actively avoid attacks, outplay opponents, no reliance on gear, etc…its great.

There is no doubt, this game is amazing. My friend used to play Aion 24/7, now he plays GW2 24/7, you know, constant pve updates and what not.

The problem is that PvP isn’t as loved as PvE and instead of getting nice toys were left with the hand me downs. PvP updates and bug fixes should be rolling out quicker (skill fixes in general, most of the ele bugs aren’t even pvp related). This class patch per month is too slow.

Hopefully with the 2week living stories we will see 2 week bug fixes.

My favourite thing about Anet is that they release new traits, nerfs, buffs and what not, bug them, then fix them faster then the traits and bugs that have been around since release. I speak mainly from the elementalist perspective, but I would like to have my stuff fixed, sometime before it is a year old.

Why Devs FAVOR mesmers.

There are 2 things I hate about the Mesmer
1: My dragons tooth criting doesn’t kill there clones WTF (it will only take 1 or 2 attacks says Anet … meanwhile back at one of the strongest ele attacks …)

2: Stealth. Mesmer fights without stealth are really fun. Mesmer fights with stealth are just stupid.

1) that depends on the build, Mesmers have traits and Signets that buff up Phantom (and clone i think) health

2) Pretty much required due to the fact of “Target” Function – Be thankful its not as bad as Perma-stealth thieves…

I don’t mind a short stealth to make me require target, but some of those stealths are a bit stupid.
The reason I hate the clone hp is due to the fact that I will pick a clone (after he makes me lose target) that is doing something odd (because they bugg out every now and then) and start attacking it thinking “must be the real one with this much health” burn through my burst (not much on an ele) kill it and hey presto, it was a clone.

1 more thing, why do the clones randomly aggro to other player?

I like the idea of /resign
I like the idea of a Deserter debuff that won’t let someone enter for x amount of time.
I like the idea of adding a glaringly obvious icon for the debuff, so everyone can see it for miles.

DO IT!

Sets the character on fire for 20 minutes, cannot be cleansed and deals damage over time. Prevents them from entering pvp, or on entering pvp Dhumm rocks up and 1 shots him back to the pvp portal. Or Dhumm just scorpion wires him back everytime he presses join game

Stop shadow refuge from stacking stealth. Stealth when in it, not when out. Apply stability to shadow refuge when standing in it.

As far as thieves go, I don’t mind them to much, usually they run up, hit me, then run off while I cap the point. Its the ones built for 1v1 that usually kill me. Or the ones built to do stupid crap (like constant dodge wtf)

I think mesmers should have invisibility completely removed and replaced with something else. Every Mesmer I’ve fought without invisibility has been an amazing fight. Everyone that exploits every possible form of invisibility is just a pain in the neck that makes me not want to continue playing the game after the 3rd invisibility.

@TGS actually the Focus was made first and actually had some skills such as Cleansing Wave, Pheonix, Churning Earth, and Updraft on it way back in alpha, but as you can see, not a single one of those stayed….. Along with a few others I can’t think of…

PS: this was back when Updraft literally launched the enemies into the air AKA freaking forever ago

Cleansing Wave makes sense for a foucs. Your not going to be in close range so you can actually use the heal to support your group (instead of daggering off into the distance healing yourself). Updraft makes less sense. Of course this would be the other way around if you used D/F, to me that is a nice setup but your lake of RTL will make it easier to be kited.

Grandmaster Fire Trait:

Allows you to use enemy elemental Fields for finisher (Water/Ice and Fire).

Remove Burning, Chill and Bleeding. Heal (same as EA water) health and regenerate the same over 5 seconds.


Suggested Change for Fire Aura:
Gain a fire shield / aura for 3 seconds. Fire shield burns nearby foes, removes burning and chill and makes you immune to burning and chill (after all, you are surrounded by fire).

Honestly, I see the current GM fire traits as decent. One gives might stacking power and the other gives increased field duration+fury.
I like your first suggestion (glad you mentioned fire/water/ice otherwise that would be extremely OP lol). Fire Aura suggestion is also nice, who would not say no to more chill protection.

Yea, first triat suggestion was from a pvp stand point, though wouldn’t be of too much use in pve

Theorycrafting includes creating an idea, or role for a specific build, testing, processing, etc. Essentially the production phase of a build.

Of course.

All teachers of all gametypes are welcome. However I find that tPvP players generally make the best teachers, and personally I start off many of my students in the Necro school in PvP, so that they can theory craft/learn without having to spend ridiculous amounts of gold.

As for those other questions, I save those for ingame testing.

I think your missing whats good about the focus … Comet doesn’t get obstructed.

I would like to see the bunker side of Ele pushed towards the focus. No movement skills but at least a healing skill. My several previous suggestions have all be to move Cleansing Wave to the focus, and revert RTL.

Gale is a good spell, due to its animation … there almost isn’t 1. However, its single target vs its recharge time lets it down as all other ele 5 weapon skills in air are AOE and shorter recharge.

Fire Shield needs a change, 40 sec cd on a fire aura … wow .. blast finisher, aoe damage around caster or cleanse burning and chill … but no just a plain old fire aura.

Earth, very strong

Air, Swirling Winds could use a vs melee component. Atm its vs range projectiles only. Could grant swiftness or AOE vulnerability.

My suspicion is they made the dagger as the eles only offhand. Then later on added another one, however, they had already put the good stuff on the dagger.

The focus also lacks a Trait:
My ideas were:
Focus skills last an additional 1 or 2 seconds
or
Focus skills recharge 20% faster (does not stack with any other recharge traits).

Better Access to Auras??

I run Staff most of the time, and the only thing I want is Burning Retreat to be a Leap Finisher. That gives me all 4 auras. I think our access to auras is already pretty good, and have been trying to work out a build that really leverages it to the max.

Currently, the 10-point Earth trait (Elemental Shielding?) is so cheap that I can’t pass it up. Blast finish an Ice field and give everyone Frost aura AND protection. I might add Zephyr’s Boon to the mix as well, but I’m not sure I want that much aura spamming. They’re nice when you need them, but if I position well then I don’t really need them that much. Still, it might be nice for buff-stacking allies.

Staff … all auras if burning retreat was a leap finisher, where do you get Air aura? FYI leap through static field is a daze. :s who would have though.

The build I’ve been toying with lately incorporates Tempest Defense. It somewhat compensates for the otherwise terrible melee defense on staff, and the extra crit helps make up for staff’s fairly bad damage.

Unfortunately there aren’t enough trait points to get the build I really want, which would include Powerful Auras. Can’t run Staff without 20 Arcane. Almost can’t play an Ele without 20 Arcane.

I have been playing ele with 10 arcane for a while. Though I wouldn’t go staff without blasting staff, which is a shame. The other classes weapon traits aren’t as important unless maxing damage (a lot being CD on x weapon skills or X% Damage when using x weapon). We get the life blood of staff traits, don’t take it and you suffer. Yet Anet is trying to push us out of water / arcane builds.

Some of the skills are powerful (frost bow 5 for example. Find a friend use this on him and then get him to stun break it… pretty sure this still isn’t fixed). However, the style of these weapons seems to be, pick it up, use the good skills and drop it asap or die, which is a shame.

Remove the charges
Make it so dropping the weapon drops it as a reusable weapon with the same remaining cd.

-OR-
make the weapon replace it’s elements attunement.

Start in water trait line, your aiming for 15 water. That’s a nice heal on change into water (EDIT: sorry, this is wrong until you get second tier traits, go for arcane first). Then 10 Arcane (or even the other way around) in arcane you want to pick up trait V, that will give you buffs when you change attunement. A more risky way to go is 10 in fire for Lava Tomb. This will kill any melee enemies when you are down, if you have high enough power and your downed 1 will do more damage. This is costly though and should only be used as a last resort. Staying alive is key.

As an ele, we have nothing like the Mes/Theif and no where near that of the guardian and warrior in terms of sustain until higher levels.

Stacking power will help you kill stuff, but stacking vitality will help with lower levels.

Remember, don’t be afraid to buy gear off the trading post every now and then (I suggest every 10 levels or even every 5 till you get some nice yellows)

Weapons: D/D is good at higher levels. S/D will help out lower levels as Scepter has a nice heal and dagger offhand has a nice heal. Both of those combined will be similar in strength to your main heal. Scepter Fire 2 will miss unless the target is still, good for those ranged foes, or in conjunction with the immobilize from signet of earth.

Use Glyph of Elemental Harmony as your main heal. That gives buffs, protection being a strong buff, or even regen to help when at low levels.

Overall advice: Learn the weapons, there are 20 skills and you will need to use the right ones for the right situation. Also, don’t be a baby have a piece of cheese … I mean, use the attunement swap, don’t just auto attack in fire / air.

What do you mean by theorycraft … those crazy people who post all the stats and how 1 more point of precision will give you this much more damage? Or the laid back guys that put the traits together and proceed to use the build with all amulets until they find one that works well?

Do you find that stratergies are required for certain builds classes, not just a standard dps rotation?

Do you want PvP only teachers or someone who knows everything.
To answer this, I used to play TPvP. I was never a high rank and I didn’t enjoy it at all. Currently I play Hotjoin and Dueling, much more fun, I can run whatever build I want and I can try whatever I want. If you want someone to give TPvP advice I have some, but it isn’t my current cup of tea. If you want someone for general pvp, getting started, build strategies and what not, I can sure help out.


Finally some other questions you may want to ask applicants in the teaching roll:
-What weapons are you familiar with on the Elementalist?
This is important, because some people only play D/D for example and only know about the others, haven’t had any experience in those fields. Personally I have played Dagger main, Dagger offhand, Scepter main and Focus offhand.

-Do you currently run with your own build, or are you using someone elses?
A big question in regards to the FOTM builds. Did I copy Dapheonix’s build? Did I always run that build. No, I ran a similar build and took inspiration from Dapheonix’s build to come up with a build I found quite fun (if not optimal).

-Do you condone using FOTM builds and having no insight of your own?
Are you going to take a teacher who has copy pasted their build and playstyle from the forums, or some who knows what they are talking about. For example Dapheonix, he knows what he is talking about.

Later, some complaints about the fights, someone complained it’s always 1v4. Ofcourse it is, if you run into 4 enemy players it’s 1v4 unfortunatelly.
Learn when to back off.

That is very true, I have won many a match by … engaging all the enemies head on ,who would have thought /sarcasm. I have won many a match by going the way the enemy is not. If they have 4 people on 1 point … how many do they have on the other point (spoken like a child reading a whiteboard at school). 5 minus 4 is obviously another 4. Maybe if they went and fought that other 4 they would have won (the other 4 is 1 person if you haven’t caught on yet). So 5 of you, not at the place where the 4 of them is means you will have 2 v 0 and 3 v 1 … looks like good odds to me. Then their team has to split up (or use the stupid Mesmer portal) to fight you off.

If the are bad enough to have 4 people at 1 location they will probably all go to the 1 point with their 1 friend, then you disengage and head to where they came from, leaving a strong bunker or 2 behind to trick them into staying (if your bunker/s can handle 5).

Seriously, come up with your own builds. Take influence from others but no need to CP their build and defend how not OP you are.

D/D bunker ele? I came up with a D/D not bunker ele, one of the ones with all that damage that people complained about. Why? because they were used to bunker eles and there 1k damage at max. In comes a 5k fire grab and oh crapsticles D/D eles can tank and heal and and damage and … sob sob forums /cry. The build I ran was created to defeat other FOTM D/D builds, it had some defences but most was damage output.

Warrior can be very fun in pvp, just a lot harder to play and less loved by Anet. Not everyone can do everything according to Anet, so Warriors can’t pvp I guess.

Also during PvP I’d rather have the minimap locked and centered. Right now one has to zoom out quite a lot to see the whole map and then things become so tiny that it’s hard to make out the whereabouts of your teammates.

Not to mention playing with interface small.
The only time you get a good view of the match is when you are mid

All that heart seeker needs is for the auto lock leap to be removed, so it goes straight forward. Getting 22222222ed around the map is just infuriating (considering the rest of us are going 2 Shift 2, 3 5, 6 dodge, 7 8 Shift 3, R, X).
