so back on topic I’m hoping the devs look over focus and give it an overhaul because the 40 second cooldown on a fire aura is just horrible.

Yes, me too. Its like they thought about having 2 main hands and a 2 handed weapon. Then they made the offhand dagger. Many cycles later the must have thought “How about some more off hand options here” and gave us the focus. Problem was they already made the dagger do everything.

Umm, so? You keep describing skills we have, my answer is; So what? Everyone has immunities, everyone have stuns, your point is? Heck, I will even dare to say our stuns are REALLY hard to land, considering they are situational for the most part, and lately our “immunity” got nerfed to the ground since we cant heal while doing so…… so NO, thats are not "Strong points, sorry.

I agree with most of what you said, however this isn’t entirely true. Ele can heal whilst invulnerable, focus earth 5. However, our utility invulnerability has been nerfed several times since release. Before you could change attunement in it (nerfed) then you could use utilities (nerfed) now you are a ball of mist, unable to do anything but move slowly and waist dodges. If I recall correctly I think you could do anything in mistform then that got reduced and reduced down to nothing.

Looks like a lot of interest for this build. Will be much better when you get past the bugs.

Fist link is my usual sPvP build, /d makes it better, but I like the focus to much
2nd link is Kuruks’ WvW one, where I added some notes about things like Glyph of Elemental Power (instead of fire signet) and Sigil of Superior Doom for poison, but those are all on a pvp side.

Nice to see the use of a staff in this build. Unfortunately with the Scepter /x and the Staff you only get the 1 Aura to add to the build. With the nerf to Signet of Air (would have been nice if they made another signet shorter cd) you cannot get 100% protection anymore (close but not close enough).

Also unfortunately there are some bugs to watch out for. Sig of Restoration doesn’t recharge faster with Signet Mastery. Sig of Air only has a 16 sec speed boost with written in stone. When these get fixed (sig of restoration has been this way since release so I don’t think soon) the build will be even better.

Better Access to Auras??

I run Staff most of the time, and the only thing I want is Burning Retreat to be a Leap Finisher. That gives me all 4 auras. I think our access to auras is already pretty good, and have been trying to work out a build that really leverages it to the max.

Currently, the 10-point Earth trait (Elemental Shielding?) is so cheap that I can’t pass it up. Blast finish an Ice field and give everyone Frost aura AND protection. I might add Zephyr’s Boon to the mix as well, but I’m not sure I want that much aura spamming. They’re nice when you need them, but if I position well then I don’t really need them that much. Still, it might be nice for buff-stacking allies.

Staff … all auras if burning retreat was a leap finisher, where do you get Air aura? FYI leap through static field is a daze. :s who would have though.

Does the cleansing water affect PvE / WvW? kitten making us ele bad in pvp lol, didn’t even know this had an internal cd till the other day. Oh well, makes my friend build strong, now he can drop Dwayna Runes.

Another suggestion I have for you: Superior Sigil of Doom. 50% uptime on poison but lose out on that extra dodge. It is hard to adjust I can tell you, and there are time when you wish you had that extra dodge. But this is the only way eles get poison without having to get hit (poison on downed and poison on hit 5%).

From my time in sPvP with Sgil of Superior Doom, when you land your combo its something like this: Signet of Earth, dragons tooth, phoenix, switch to Air / Water, hit them with something to apply poison and watch them go for their heal. When that happens, Focus Water 5 or Air 5 to interrupt it, if you fail they still take a poisoned heal.

I play the build usually as Zerkers, to put on the pressure. When I feel like being tanky I switch it up to Rabids.

WvW Signet Elementalist?

D/D 0 0 0 15 30 (others traits where ever) is better at survival as there is 2 extra healing sauces and an extra blind source.

However, you should be able to dish out more condition damage here. Earth1, Dragons tooth, Signet of fire. Signet of Fire is a bit iffy iffy. While it gives you access to burning outside of fire spec (always good to stack those conditions up) it does have a high cd for just a burn (likely to be cleansed earlier then getting its full use). Sig of fire, is amazing in pve.

I would suggest you look at Glyph of Elemental Power. 25% chance to apply Burning, Chill, Weakness or Cripple. Which are all situationally good. This only works for 1 of the buffs at a time, so pop it in fire (while casting DT for example) and for 66% uptime gain a 25% chance to apply burning. With air 2 and 3 being instant you can get some good stacks. You could also use in water to slow enemies down, air to apply weakness for some more damage reduction and earth to slow down escaping enemies.

This will remove a solid chunk of protection though (4sec? every 16 sec, effectively 25% uptime).

Something to look at as well, but would remove from your play style: (if you will be with allies) is to go 30 water, sacrificing 10 arcane and 20 earth. That will grant Powerful Auras, which is aura share basically. However, you lose 5-8 sec protection and the other buffs. You gain, 20% cd to water (32 cooldown on cleansing wave) Shard of Ice (3 vulnerability per sig use from memory), condition cleanse or Fall damage reduction trait. However, you lose signet cd and condition damage. This is more of a support way then damage and you would probably be better with clearic type gear to increase Cleansing Wave and Trident allied heals. And would move away from your suggested play style.

Another suggestion I have for you: Superior Rune of Doom. 50% uptime on poison but lose out on that extra dodge. Just some ideas.

Finally, look at 2x Lyssa runes (longer conditions, not so good in WvW, but more on this) or 2x earth (more protection, 60% duration total).

Did you know? With 20 points in fire you have 20% condition duration. Why is that important? Well it makes you sig of earth imobolize for 3 and 1/2 sec (instead of 3). Why is that important? Well, Dragons tooth takes about that much time to cast and fall. With 2x Lyssa you should be able to imob into dragons tooth for maximum damage (unless they are wearing melendru runes :/). Also, if you add the conditions duration food …. 5 sec in total of imobolize (Garlic Kale Sauce)

@TGS by Earth Shield I’m assuming you mean Conjure Earth? If so I agree fully, our conjures should all do something when summoned instead of just FGE and FA.

Yea that’s the one. Flame Axe is like a 24 second burn, if you can hit anything with it. Not sure if the bow chills, never tried to hit anything with it, its my start with bow 5 then drop weapon. Was good for bunkering out of the ring strat, but usually I replaced it with armour of earth, cant go past 24 sec of protection (nerfed)

You see all those fancy pancy Attunement Skill CD reductions that no one takes? They should make each of those reduce CD on the swap time for THAT ONE ATTUNEMENT (wouldn’t stack with intelligence) be reduced by 40% which would be the equivalent to 20pts in Arcane, it’d allow some build diversity because if you wanted to be, say a tanky condi ele you’d be able to get into the attunement that allows that more often AND reduce those skills CDs.

IMHO it should do both. 20% cd to that attunement skills and 40% (not stacking) to the attunement. And for god sakes, why are they 20 points high, but the water one is 10?

Currently play around with for weakness, I use it at the start of the fight though. So unless I’m up against thieves with basilisk, then it is a waisted stun break till mid to late fight.

What if it was similar to a signet (but still a glyph). Passively do those conditions (as it currently does, but different attunements would do different things). Activate it to do those conditions that the active attunement would and stunbreak.

Stun Breaker Suggestions

I’m aware this is a hot button issue, but I think I have a relatively fair solution to the problem. Here are my possible solutions:

1. Restore the Stun Breaker to Cleansing Fire. Hell, remove the burn if you really want to, so long as the stun break comes back.

2. Restore Stun Breaker to Lightning Flash and/or Cleansing Fire in PVE only.

3. Remove Stun Breaker from Signet of Air and restore Stun Breaker to Lightning Flash.

Don’t remove burning from cleansing fire.
Step 1 start Fire Grab, Step 2 teleport at enemy, Step 3 cleansing fire before the Fire Grab hits. Who would expect that?

No one, I saw some ele fire grabbing yesterday in PvP (he was a ways away from me) so I thought he was some noob, next thing I know he’s in my face and I’m dead xD

Indeed, if you read aways back I had some posts up about Unconventional openers. Such as teleport updraft, teleport fire grab, teleport kd. Teleport Burning speed for extra damage from it. Teleport FGS 3 for double damage. Teleport then RTL for extra range (the other way always bugs out for me, and RTL usually bugs out as well, hello focus). Teleport Frost bow 5 into frost bow 3.

So basically teleport everything. Also things like don’t use Updraft after rtl, and don’t use fire grab after burning speed (use burning speed to bait a dodge) the cleansing fire fire grab. Also, imob (earth 3) into burning speed to apply your burning, then judge a dodge, if you think you can get away with fire grab go for it. Using CE to bait a dodge and get some damage from Air swap (air 15 trait points). I used to run 0 15 0 25 30 Zerker to beat other D/Ds FOTM builds. Traits for defences, Zerker to get the damage out. I also used to use Teleport and Cleansing Fire offensively, not as stun breaks

Make Earth Shield instant cast and break stun on summon as well as AOE KD where it lands.

I think the best offensive setup is actually 0/15/10/15/30. This gives you the added 10% dps, keeps your lightning proc on swap, and maintains the water heal on swap.

I would pick either Bolt to the Heart for dps (getting swiftness by using glyph of elmental power, or using signet of air) or zephyr’s boon for some more swiftness/fury.

That being said, arcane abatement is so nice to have while roaming in wvw.

This is actually one of the more interesting trait setups I’ve heard of. I may just play around with it a bit. Thanks.

Mmm, sounds like a nice replacement to my old 0 15 0 25 30 zerker d/d ele destroyer. So many FOTM eles went down so hard to that build.

I’m reworking my S/F duelling build. Trying to push Anet to buff the dam thing. As it stands, /d is a better duelling off hand, but, just like the focus. And roaming, and bunkering and everything except stopping projectiles for 10 seconds

Better Access to Auras??

Or, increase fire damage by 10% and burn attacking foes.
Or, fire aura applies more then 1 sec buring.
Or, fire aura applies 1 sec of burning to attacking foe, you also gain 1 stack of retaliation for the duration of the aura.
Or, fire aura burns foes attacking for 1 sec and removes 1 condition (or, removes chill and bleeding).

The easiest thing they can do is to make fire shield passively apply 1 second burn on nearby enemies (360 radius) every second while giving the caster 1 stack of might every second.
This would bring it on par with the other auras.

I had though of that. However, as it stands, there are 4 auras.

Water + Fire, punish both ranged and melee
Earth, Punishes ranged only (and the odd axe through)
Air, Punishes Melee only (and the odd ranged attack, which is actually melee)

Adding a burn in x area makes this more anti melee unless pressuring a ranged foe (but if your both ranged this aura would be worse then it currently is).

My latest idea:
Burn attacking foes and gain might. Fire aura also removes burning and chill and makes you immune to burning and chill for its duration.

Pve RTL

If anything RTL needs 1 cooldown. It is unfair for us people that lag to have to deal with this skill bugging out over 600 units even though we are using it as intended by the devs (gap closer). It almost never hits over that distance an you usually teleport back to 600-900. The same thing happened with RTL pre 1500 fix, you would go 1500 then rubber band back to 900-1200, waisting your updraft in the process.

Just revert RTL to 20cd 1200 range and move cleansing wave to the focus already.

I wish Anet would fix our bugs before nerfing things left right and center (exaggerated I know). They pushed fresh air, bugged it, fixed it straight away. Yet they are trying to move us from our Water Arcane specs and our cantrip builds but haven’t fixed the other skills yet.

How about since you pushed up the cd on Air signet (and bugged it) you reduce the cd on earth or water signet (or make the water signet remove a condition + chill on use at least).

And while your there, even though its not technically bugged, fix the focus so people will use it over /d for bunker builds.

Evasive Arcana cancels spells ?

Evasive Arcana is one of our best traits. Water Dodge is a AoE heal+condition cleanse. Churning Earth is a Blast finisher.
Anyway, I have rarely encountered the issue you are speaking of – Mostly because the spell it triggers is insta-cast: by the time you recover from the dodging animation, the spell is already “completed”.
I too tend to spam 6 when in low health and dodging, but I never had to blame Evasive Arcana for dying because the Heal did not trigger :/

You need to experience lag there my friend.
EA for me and everyone I watch using it happens when they are running off. Not during the dodge (or end of dodge). Not to mention you can get hit during your dodge, and your not refunded the endurance it costs. Funniest thing I saw was me mid dodge turned to stone, flying like super man, defying gravity. Also you can double dodge when lagging enough. On a thief with caltrops on dodge you get 2 stacked on top of each other and 0 endurance left, it is also not refunded.

Gain a fire shield / aura for 3 seconds. Fire shield burns nearby foes, removes burning and chill and makes you immune to burning and chill (after all, you are surrounded by fire).

First off I must admit that these chests are a step in the right direction. That you will eventually get the skin you want if you get enough of these (even if you are very unlucky you can still get a skin via the trade in).

However.

Currently you can by the Wind, Sun and Lightning catcher off the TP for 9, 3, 4 gold respectively.
That comes to a total of 16 gold (around 17-18 if you add the silver).

25 chests cost 400 gems.
Opening 25 chest /= 1 skin (unless your very lucky)
400 gems = 9 and a bit gold == 1 skin of the TP

So .. why would we spend gems on RNG chests when we could get the skins of the TP? If your reply is for the head skin, take a second look at it and your non existent forehead.

After opening 2400 gems worth of chest, I received enough scraps to by 4 skins and 1 golden fortune (5 skins in total). These things also give random buffs, that are applied on opening and stack to 1 hour 30.
So opening 2400 gems worth of chests is: 6×25 = 150 buffs for 10 minutes.
150 / 4 possible buffs (example) = 37.5 of 1 buff = 375 minutes of buffs which is 6.25 hours. That is 5x the duration these things stack for. So it seems that they want you to open no more then 25 at a time, nor do they warn you otherwise.

I want some skins, I am not going to carry these things around with me and open 150 chests over then next few days to get the skins. Why do I not have a stack of 6 hours (they are random so could be more of one or another) of each buff? Or the better thing, a 10 minute consumable that I could use when I wanted to.

Also why can you buy the skins on the TP, each cheaper then 1 stack of 25 chests?

Please remove RNG from the game, and sell the skins on the gem shop for 400 gems, or a pack of all for 1000 (all 3).

And for god sake, make it so getting a skin of the gem shop unlocks it for PvP as well.

Thankyou for your time, and tell NCSoft to take their you know what out of you know where. This is your game, I don’t want another Aion expansion.

For those who haven’t got the skins (back skins) yet:
Trade gems for gold then buy the skins through the Trading Post, you will be much happier.
If you do buy these gemshop items, 1hour and a half, don’t open more then 25 chests each hour and a half.

ONe thing for focus that would be a simple, should-have-already-been-implemented buff would be to make magnetic wave an aura.

I don’t think so. Magnetic Aura just isn’t as good as magnetic wave. If they make Magnetic Wave into Magnetic Aura + damage + cure 3 conditions then sure, that would be a great buff.

E.G. Gain Magnetic Aura for 3 sec, deal damage and cure 3 conditions.

WvW Signet Elementalist?

I run that exact same build for PvE, but I favour embers might over burning fire. I also use focus offhand instead of dagger. I’m slowly gearing toward WvW.

1 thing to mention on this build, the Signet of Air nerf (I call it a nerf because I can no longer maintain 100% protection swiftness and fury) prevents you from maintaining 100% protection. Also, this will be much stronger when the heal is reduced to 20sec cd (20% sig reduction trait is bugged with this). You also need to cover the 25% movements speed from air signet with swiftness (as this is also bugged, you lose 7 sec from the passive).

Good luck. I will be trying this my self, when I have the time to gear up.

We didn’t want this skyhammer. This dammed “funny” map which was added to tournaments roster.

My point was that WvW has had the same 2 maps (BL/EB) since beta/release. All of the Borderlands are carbon copies, at least different maps allow for tactic/build changes whereas the WvW remain the same layout. We’ve asked for new maps but yet to get them.

No rotation, no changes, zip nada

And from what they said at release that isn’t going to change. Unless in an expansion.

Why doesn't Anet bring in top players?

So … does anyone from Anet ever play from Australia or other such lag rich countries to see how they could improve certain skills. For example, Ride the Lightning (/D air 4 on elementalist). With the nerfs to this skill (40 sec cd if you miss) you hardly ever have a 20 sec cd on this skill due to it missing due to lag. There are many other examples of lag affecting the game and skills as well.

In the end, just wondering if any of you have personal experience with how the lag affects the game, or if you have “players” from Aus in you band of buddies.

Thats an issue Australians suffer in EVERY game. It really isnt Anet’s fault.

That is very true, however there are some things they could add to help us out. Taken from my previous example, make RTL have 1 cooldown not this 1 if you live in America (/other lag free countries) and hit something and another if you live in Australia (/other countries with lag issues) or miss (if you live in America / other lag free countries)

I do know the issue is with lag and not with the skill itself but Anet could make some changes to make it a fair use lag or not.

I made a thread about making signet actives be auras that correspond with the given element.

I still think it would be a cool idea IMO

I’ve suggested this idea before as well. However, the duration of these would have to be shorter then the 3 sec. Since air has had its cd upped to 30/24, might be more viable now. Remembering that Air had 20/16 before. A 20 sec air aura would have been over the top.

As it stands, I think that this trait would be good if they improved the fire aura. Something like Burn foes around you as well as attacking foes.
Or, increase fire damage by 10% and burn attacking foes.
Or, fire aura applies more then 1 sec buring.
Or, fire aura applies 1 sec of burning to attacking foe, you also gain 1 stack of retaliation for the duration of the aura.
Or, fire aura burns foes attacking for 1 sec and removes 1 condition (or, removes chill and bleeding).

I also think the Gain fire aura on sig activation should also reduce signet cast time by 50% (not including the heal).

Focus really does need a heal.

Yes, it lacks damage, heal and speed. Which the /D has all 3 + arguably similar control (focus is ranged and only 1 AoE that is slow, dagger is point blank but both aoe)

As it is, it would be hard to add damage to the focus (the skills are of a defensive nature), adding movement would make it another QQ /D weapon but adding a heal makes it a, you cant run but you can stand and fight.

Taking away the heal from /D would remove the QQ, allow it to have its shorter CD on RTL (required for non bunker builds to even think about surviving) and still be a strong weapon. Adding a chill defiantly makes it synergies more with the Scepter (@naphack). Scepter being ranged, and allowing you to keep foes at range is a definite plus. This also opens more dodge pressure, as a chill makes you walk almost slow enough to get Dragon Toothed.

I’m sure worst case they could make the chill shorter ranged (300-600) and AoE to fit with the /D current skill set.

At any rate, with the focus and off dagger where they stand now, no one will take a focus (unless mad like me) outside of certain parts of PvE or certain situations in PvP (which is even less likely due to weapon locking in Tourney play).

Announcing matches every so often with a link to spectate would be a good way to actually see top rated teams fight each other. What’s the point of being on the top if no one follows you?

back in guild wars 1, we get those hall of heroes announcement things.

and the hall of heroes arena itself, was really grand!

i only saw it once in my whole guild wars 1 life time.
not sure it was a fluke or we were just lucky.

but my team managed to battle in the full golden arena with 2 other teams!
we did not win, but the feeling is errr how to say.

it kinda feels like an achievement (no achievement points included though) itself to be able to be there.

maybe it is the shiny effect since it is all golden and all.

I only got in there once myself, Higher ranked player with no lives wouldn’t take us lower ranked guys. Got in there off a fluke with a Barrage Ranger build and got my unique bow. To bad someone hacked my account and stole all my stuff. Poor Kunuvange, where are you now? Some bugger is probably running around with memorial stuff thanks to him.

I’m sure Anet could load someone’s character, Paralyse it, and wolla, a statue lol.

That memorial thing kittented me off, I own 2 copies of each GW1 expansion and got nothing from it. Because they couldn’t just go, Ah I see you own each GW1 expansion, here is 4 free points towards your memorial.

Yea, Such and Such has won Favour of the Gods in the Hall of Heroes.
Except that favour of the gods was required for PvE, to get into the money rich environments. Not to mention that going into those environments would cost you 1 Plat, so you had to make that while you were down there lol.

So I’ve been working an idea for some time now. Basically this idea is a pvp broadcast through the PvE world.

When a high ranked team is about to enter a match, a broadcast could be sent through PvP and PvE:
Team Lucky Ducks, 4th highest rank in the mists, face off against Team Fluffy Bunnies, rank 3rd. If Lucky Ducks can win this one they will ascend to rank 3rd and push those poor Fluffy Bunnies down. [Be quick and join the spectators folks (click here) 3/10 spectators].
Want to try your own in the mists combatant? All the action of fighting your fellow friends, guildies or even foes. [Step right up (click here)]
Where are you on the Leader Board? [Leaderboard (click here)]

When a high ranked team gains a better position:
Whoa, I can’t believe it, Lucky Ducks have push their way up the boards with that performance. Those Fluffy Bunnies are going to need some more practice after that shocking defeat. You heard right folks, Lucky Ducks squashed those Fluffy Bunnies 500 – 450.

Programing in some data mining could pull so interesting facts to broadcast to the public as well.

PvP isn’t just about besting or killing your fellow Tyrian, or Charr or Vegtable, its about the leader boards. Once your finished killing one another in the mists, have a chat with the Tournament guide. They will talk you through the advanced level of killing each other and how you can rank up. Can you reach the top of the leader boards?


In each capital city there should be a statue made from the character model of the champions of the mists. So about 4-5 statues of the last 4-5 players of that race to reach the top of the leaders boards. Keeping your statue there requires you to not be beaten. In Lions arch there should be a large statue of the current leading team, created from their character models.
Interacting with the statues does:
“Leading the way through the mists is Team Genocide! The members of this team have fought valiantly to make it to the top and currently fight off aggressors to their title. Charr Guardian of the Blood Legion (story choice to add flavour text) Ruddles, Human Elementalist of the path of Dwayna ….. etc etc. This statue honours those heroes, those whom desire to have their names carved in stone upon this site must first prove themselves in the combat of the mists.”

Also, stick a mist portal there.

Indeed this is annoying, and has happened to our team when we were still playing almost every match. We would check the enemy for a strat, and bam, they had all changed.

Here’s an idea, don’t join the match until it forces you to. Then those pro teams wont know what to do. Heck, some might even quit thinking you are afk.

A second Idea, get everyone to make the same class, then switch to your normal classes when the other team switches.

How about an underwater finisher, or trait and weapon templates or a downed state toggle for custom arenas or other game modes

How about a res on downed mode, for you know, duelling which they are insistent on not adding.

They wont add downstate toggle because no one will play on any server other then ones with downstate off.
