Eir Stegalkin, leader of Destiny’s Edge, who bravely battled both Kralkatorrik and Zhaitan, falls to a mere minion with fear on her face and no weapon in her hand.
She deserved so much better.
Doing it “right” is purposely devaluing core content, removing earned core Guild abilities, and placing them behind a pay wall?
ok
If you are non HoT there is 0 that you can do to progress your guild or even get back the upgrades you already had. You will have a guild bank, if unlocked before, and whatever banners/consumables you had built (with no means to build more).
They ran a so called Beta that ended up being a bait and switch. Players did not actually test the content to gain Elites, they got them on a platter to give the most positive experience possible.
They lowered rewards and changed core content to leverage HoT buys. Even worse, Guild upgrades already earned in the core game were removed and the means to achieve them again put behind a pay wall. Really unethical. I’ve never seen this so blatantly done in 14 years of MMOs.
Interesting that a good percentage of the “positive” reviews spend more time namecalling people who don’t care for the expansion than actually talking about the expansion. Seems the usual suspects found the site.
It’s not even a guild. It’s just a glorified party.
And your response to non HoT players this happened to is just an insult.
Productive, since without HoT it doesn’t matter what size they are.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
Without purchasing HoT you won’t ever build any upgrades again.
That ability was ripped away and put behind a pay wall. If you have an issue with them doing that, the thread will be locked. They don’t care.

I guess I will add that locking the thread regarding guild availability is another good reason I will NEVER buy HoT. It is a valid issue, and the thread is locked with no reason given. Tell me again, Gaile, that it is not logical for me to assume your employer does not care.
SkyShroud.2865 …. seriously?
No kidding. Now he is telling us what we supposedly think.
I give up tbh. Some people just don’t get it. I can easily pay people to get a guild hall, but I can’t keep paying people to do a weekly event with me every week just to get what I used to get solo / duo the previous 3 years. and since launch in GW1.
Why fight for breaking smaller guilds when it don’t affect you the slightest? Its just being a kitten cause it dont affect you… Hope they nerf something you care about so i can troll you back…
They are telling Anet it is fine to take earned content away and paywall/gate it. Karma. I’ll laugh when it is something that matters to them.
SkyShroud.2865 …. seriously?
No kidding. Now he is telling us what we supposedly think.
As an aside, I can’t recall a single instance of anyone objecting to my Banners and Buffs while ranting about them not being from a REAL GUILD.
“BEFOULER, TEMPT ME NOT WITH YOUR ILL GOTTEN BUFFS”
No.. not once. Guess it was fine when they were getting something from my solo trash guild.

guild
?ild/
noun
a medieval association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power.
an association of people for mutual aid or the pursuit of a common goal.
synonyms: association, society, union, league, organization, company, cooperative, fellowship, club, order, lodge, brotherhood, fraternity, sisterhood, sorority
“the copper craftsmen have formed a guild”Everything about the word “guild” and what it entails revolves around multiple people. Sorry that you don’t enjoy playing with others players but there are single player games for that. This is a Massive Multiplayer Online game. You knew what you were getting into when you bought it, not sure what ground you have to stand on here.
And often those guild members worked individually, or as Master/apprentice in small shops. The Copper Craftsmen did not form 20 member teams to build a Teakettle.
Also, when I formed my Guild years ago, there was 0 indication a minimum group of players would be mandatory, nor had that been the case in GW1. How, pray tell, did I “know” what this expansion would bring? I do know when I bought the Game we were assured we could play Solo and were encouraged to.
The old system catered to a wide range. In the old system, there were upgrades, awards, missions already tied to group activity. A 1-2 member guild could do only a certain amount of upgrading. How was this so heinous? Banners, buffs, siege. Things that were shared with the “community”. In the old system I never saw anyone asking for a solo guild being able to do the group missions. I certainly did not ask for that.
So now, I don’t have what I DID have.. earned honestly, by the rules and restrictions of the core game, and it is gated behind a pay wall. I would not approve of anything earned being taken from anyone and put behind a pay wall. To my surprise, a lot of you think that is just peachy, so peachy that you feel fine about namecalling and armchair lecturing those it happened to. So happy to pull out the M in MMO dead horse and flog it self righteously, wreathed in your smug superiority over soloist trash.
I’m so sorry that my small, community geared upgrades ruined so much of your game that some of you feel the need to be so vindictive and supportive of earned features being taken away from others. It cements my opinion that a significant part of this so called “community” is one of the worst I have seen in 14 years of MMO gaming.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
The guild hall is thunging MASSIVE. I don’t see how having one for your guild is in any way a benefit to your gameplay unless you are in a large guild.
At the beginning at least there is no bank, no trading post, no crafting stations… nothing. It is a HUGE empty hall. You really aren’t missing a whole lot by not having one.
I don’t want a Guild Hall. I want my already earned upgrades back. Unfortunately, the means to do so were put in that hall and group size gated.
This is less about wanting a freeking Hall and more about Anet using a club instead of a carrot to leverage HoT sales.

Let’s be realistic here. Someone asked me why is it absurd for a solo to have 3/4 of a guild. I didn’t reply him. It is indeed absurd though for a person to have that much “power” or access to so much features which are made to cater to be used by many people, not one or two. If Gw2 is a pvpish game, this will become extremely game breaking with solo or duo people having so much power. Thus, this isn’t realistic or even fair in those games.
Also, realistically, a small guild has a small hall because of the limited of resources while a large guild will have a large hall. However, guild hall can’t be scaled so they limit it via features. If solo or duo guild are to confine into this concept, they will not get guild hall because it is only realistic and fair to the guilds that actually bother to earn for it and not buy their way through. If golds is all you need to build a guild, that is really a insult to all the guilds that actually put in efforts to gather people, create a community and advance.
What Power? The powers I abused sooo much planting banners in noob zones? My horrific abuse of power placing +5 on a camp when a map commander asked? The raw, game breaking arrogance of fully buffing a keep or tower? My maniacal laughter while placing superior guild siege to help my server?
Please tell me how I, personally, gained by such callous abuse of my ill gotten gains? By providing things, free, to this community? Good lord, this game needs a dungeon lockup for “power mad” Tyrants such as I. Oh, the destruction I have wrought. Mea Culpa.
And BTW, I upgraded my Guild with influence, not Gold. My perfidy knows no bounds.
Same to you, read the above.
Btw, if you really did earn influence by gaining through huge number of events, that really is impressive. But, did you really gain that much influence through solo events?
This is GW2, not pvpishmmo.. whatever that is. I earned that influence ungrouped. As designed and intended in Open World and WvW. Most times alone, sometimes not. I solo roamed, scouted, and capped camps in WwW.

Are you joking? Obtaining a guild hall for your one mans banking guild? A guildhall is supposed to be a place for a guild (of players), this is not housing or something. So tired of the new generation of gamers who want everything spoonfed and soloable in an MMO. If you want to only solo a game, theres many great single player games. And no you are not entitled in any way. Whats next? wanting to do raids Soloable?
Why yes, it is perfectly logical that me asking for the ability for my guild to do as it has done for years also means I will ask for solo raids, precursors to drop from Iron Nodes, and a private instance to single-handedly kill Jormag with a Herring.
I’ve soloed in MMOs since 2003. Most of the time.. it was harder. I like to socialize, sell, and craft in MMOs and adventure on my own. Gasp. And, I tossed as much money at those MMOs as group players did. More Gasps.
Let’s be realistic here. Someone asked me why is it absurd for a solo to have 3/4 of a guild. I didn’t reply him. MMORPG.
Massive MULTIPLAYER Online Role Playing Game.
The tax for being a “Lone Wolf” in these games is you simply don’t get the benefits that social players get.
Also, you can be in more than one guild.
Please, stop. MMORPG was a term coined by Garriot for UO, and the meaning was simply that thousands of players could log in at the same time via internet connections. NOTHING to do with group makeup. This lame M in MMO argument has been dragged out for a decade, it has never been valid, and Game companies are more than happy to take cash from solo players and provide them content along with content designed for groups.
it really wouldn’t hurt to glide in central tyria
You have to be joking. The zones were not designed for it, and I guarantee it would be exploited.
I can’t believe these suggestions from a “community” that goes purple with rage at the mere mention of mounts.
Anyhow, I’ll just parrot the standard mount arguments. They aren’t vertical zones. We have Waypoints. You don’t need them. Go back to some other game. This is not some other game.

My unwanted social pariah solo guild approves this message.
I’m sorry but, this is all a joke right? Ur saying anet is defining a guild kitten players, well… No, the English language is.. Guild is not used for the description of a lone wolf…. Its a term for a group of people organized for the same cause/purpose/goals. Your playing GUILDwars… Just be happy they are catering to people who pretend its a single player offline game at all! U play alone? No, u don’t need a guild hall and shouldn’t have one. Btw, have u seen the cost of upgrades? And u think the claiming is unobtainable with a single player? Lol
Srry, but I’m not srry. And your outlook on this game and the developers is asinine.
Reading this I really do not think you should be lecturing on the English Language.
When I formed my guild there was no rule as to number of people required to make one. There still isn’t, afaik. I earned the upgrades I had with influence, according to the rules and mechanics in place.
Taking something away, something earned honestly, changing the rules, and gating it with an expansion purchase and grouping requirement is bovinefeces.
And Im sick of the M in MMO stupidity as well. MMO was coined by Garriot for the first game allowing thousands to log in via the internet at the same time. Nothing to do with grouping, kitten .
How did my little guild, making a few banners and wvw siege/buffs offend you all so mightily? I took nothing from you, your gameplay, or your group guild events. I shared every upgrade with the community.. via banners and wvw upgrades. I didn’t need any of them. I spent far more influence to provide to the community than I did for my bank space. And now I’m told by this “community” that I somehow don’t deserve providing these things, I’m just a nasty, antisocial pariah SOLO person.
Gee, Thanks.
I bet not one single poster lecturing on the evil of solo guilds ever paused for a second while clicking a banner or using +5 supply wondering if it was provided by a REAL GUILD. You all make me sick.

Remember Alterac Valley in Vanilla wow? http://www.capsulecomputers.com.au/wp-content/uploads/World-Of-Warcraft-Alterac-Valley-03.jpg somthing similar to that map size and layout with a definite finish objective for each world server each round would have been fun.
At least somthing totaly diffrent for such as expensive expansion.
AV was all I really liked in WoW, the Vanilla version. We had some go 5+ hours.
As a Camp sniper/roamer I took one look at this new map and logged out. As messed up as it could be, WvW was the only activity in this game I could enjoy. I’ll wait to see the “improved” alpine map, but honestly expecting it will be a gimmicky, vertical choke point train wreck as well.

No, a thousand times, no.
best mmo expansion ive played since T2A UO.
you all cry way too much
if you need a tutorial then you really need to consider trying something else
Wow, that is a long break from gaming. Maybe you should check out some of the other stuff that released between 1998 and now. Might give you a different perspective.
Lol, the M in MMO people have arrived.
Funny, in every MMO I have played, except this one, I had a toggle for “auto reject group invitations”. Seems the Devs of those games had a clue.
Eir was an incredibly boring and generic character. Ritlock and Canach by far seem to be the most popular characters. I’m glad they removed her.
That’s your opinion. And.. since those, according to you, are “most popular” one of them will be next. That’s how Game of Thrones works.
And, I’ll laugh.
Their sole regret seems that they weren’t able to make it worse. From dev post in Lore Forum.
“Eir’s death is also hampered somewhat here by our Teen rating, because we really wanted to show just how badly Faolain’s attack had left Eir, but we’re just unable to show copious amounts of blood and gore.”
The pace is deliberate for this expansion, so some of the other things you mentioned (lack of awe, shorter dialogs) are tied to that. We wanted to set the tone to be one of utmost urgency…a race against time to get your friends back before the worst can happen. That informed a lot of our decisions, and while I too appreciate a more languidly paced story and more dialog (provided it’s interesting), I can tell you we had a lot of discussions on this back and forth on the team to find what we felt confident was the “sweet spot” between too little exposition and not enough.
- This was definitely not motivated by the decision to have an appropriate backstory for the guardian elite specialization. In fact to my recollection, I think Jon Peters took this plot point which we knew early on as inspiration and ran with it so if anything story helped give rise to the Dragon Hunter and not the other way around. Eir’s death is also hampered somewhat here by our Teen rating, because we really wanted to show just how badly Faolain’s attack had left Eir, but we’re just unable to show copious amounts of blood and gore. The idea though is that there was no time for anyone to help her in this situation…she was dying, and she knew it. Eir had but a moment to choose between a slow, painful death as her lungs filled with blood, or a legend’s death facing her end defiantly and head on.
I cannot believe I am reading this. So, you regret not being able to add more gore and blood to this horrid contrived death of a beloved, iconic Character.
Seriously?
The platforming aspect drove me away. Adding it to mazes even worse. I enjoyed WvW but I’m done with it till the Map rotates back to Alpine.. and I’m dreading what kind of train wreck the “improvements” will be.
Finding out they “had” to murder Eir sealed the deal. GoT much?
I’ll never buy it.
Thanks for starting this thread.
For my part, I really want to give a shout out to the entire Narrative team, as well as all of the Designers, Artists, Animators, Audio and Tech people who worked with us to hopefully make a more immersive, stronger story than we’ve ever made before. I’m really proud of this team and am grateful to have been a part of Heart of Thorns.
I look forward to hearing people’s comments.
You felt the need to butcher Eir. Any comments I could make are bannable and unprintable.

Um no. The majority are playing the game and loving it. The very small yet vocal minority are here whingin about it.
Ah yes. The same thing John Smedley said during the NGE fiasco of SWG.
Shortly afterwards SWG lost most of it player base.. and were forced to refund the cost of an expansion to any player who asked for it. The magnitude of the mistakes made were reported in the Wall Street Journal.
Great reasoning there.
I’m 59. My life training horses was a journey. Raising my sons was a Journey.
This is a game.
Why didn’t you mention that a Guild without HoT is basically just a bank now, with no way of ever rebuilding the upgrades we had.. and lost.
Very poor way to do business.
You can’t spend it; influence has been completely retired as a system.
Incorrect there are ways to spend it but you can no longer earn it. I believe there are mine upgrades or you can purchase favor with it. These are limited by so much per day or week.
You cannot spend less than 10k, and the OP is pointing out that this useless amount of influence will stay on your guild panel, perhaps forever.

Well, I know I will not be playing very much anymore until Anet realizes they need to release elite specializations to everyone, or at least have a way to earn it via in-game currency (gem store purchase similar to the deluxe version upgrade?) or perhaps something else achievement or story related. Elite specializations have ruined PvP and WvW for ANYONE who hasn’t purchased HoT, and it is painfully obvious that no amount of “balancing” in the upcoming months will be able to resolve this issue as the new skill sets are simply much more overpowered than the base game specializations.
Actually, I predict that we will see the “amg core pve too easy” rolling in from the HoT players, and eventually a balance pass made to at least the 75-80 core zones and world bosses in response. Core players have more screwing to come if I am correct.
Let me give you a quick example in addition to my other Post. Have you all played any other MMO like for example WoW? Not bying exp? OK, so no new Gear, no new Talents, way less Gold, literally everything is worse without buying the expension, GW2 is for that part still amazing without HoT, you may wanna look over your table once.
Any other MMO? EnB, Everquest, SWG, WoW, Everquest2, Vanguard, LoTRo, AoC, SWToR, that enough?
Expansions in those games did NOT make older expansions or content “worse”. That content largely stayed the same, and the expansions added new content and features “stacked” on that older content. I’ve often been a year behind on EQ2 expansions, because the expansion I was playing did not change. I could play it until I was ready and needed the new one. The point being.. I did not NEED the features in the new expansion until I decided to buy it and play it.
That isn’t the case with HoT. The older content has been altered to leverage purchase of HoT. Fact is, GW2 core is now “less amazing” by design. Example.. Guilds. No point to have a Guild without HoT, you can’t upgrade one now without it. Terrible precedent.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
This Thread is full with absurd opinions, really hillarious. Have you ever played any game which made an expension at all? What did you expect? The Dungeon nerf was btw reasonable because it was way to rewarding compared to other things when it just takes you around 10min to get all the stuff by skipping 80% of the content. This is really weak from everyone of you who compains here.
Dunno. I’ve bought more expansions from Everquest2 alone than Anet have produced in the life of the company.
I’ve never seen a company purposefully destroy core content to leverage an expansion purchase. Until now. Yeah, “innovation”.
The model always used was “Buy this to get these cool additions” not “Buy this to get back what we took away”.
It is a very poor way to do business.
I’ll add that if you have a guild without HoT, it is now far less then what it was a day ago, with 0 chance of building it back up.

Thanks for that Clarification, Gail. So the Anet position is “We don’t Care”? I suspected that.
I had intended to continue playing without purchasing. I still will not be purchasing, and it looks doubtful, now, that I will follow through on still playing.
Because “reasons”.
Why would you assume that? It’s not even remotely logical.
There are many comments in this thread, both positive and negative, that, when on topic, remain in place. Our point here is that the OP asked a specific question, and the thread is being use to state (and in most cases restate) opinions that are off topic to the thread.
The topic — which is quite interesting — is not “Will you buy the expansion?” Look for those threads elsewhere. There are many of them and we have no issue with whatever you wish to say, if presented in a reasonable manner.
This question is something different, and the OP’s intentions should be respected, as we expect of any thread, on any topic.
Pardon, I make the assumption because there are no Red Name statements on those threads. And I am sorry, because you are the last person I should vent at.

That’s what expansions do, it adds new content and won’t let people that don’t buy it have access.
Funny. I’ve had a guild with upgrades for years. Now I don’t. Unless I buy access to something I already had. Guilds are not “new content”.
And I agree. I shouldn’t have a guild hall. It is “new content” That is HoT only. Fine.
Trouble is, the only means I have to replace what was taken away in what is essentially a guild revamp is located in that “New” guild hall.
It would be the same if they announced that they were removing and revamping Elite skills… and then placed the New replacement skills solely in the Expansion. People would throw a fit.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
Vertical zone was a major reason for me not to buy the expansion. I’ll probably play a whole lot less wvw as well.
And to the one comment re people who shouldn’t play MMOs.. I started gaming in 2003. MMOs are all that I have played. None of them have or had this amount of vertical content or platforming. This game is aiming harder at Console players… not longtime MMO players.
From what I can ascertain (and, admittedly, I am still a little confused…), these changes will be hurting small guilds the most.
Small guild and solo guild are very different.
To begin with, it is absurd that a solo player can get 3/4 of the guild stuffs by themselves. Solo player can even buy their way through. Of course, a lot of people took it for granted but honestly speaking, you don’t actually see such thing happening in another MMO. You don’t really see solo guild in other mmos, to even start a guild, you need to have a number of people to do so.
The large guilds work their way up through combined efforts, building a large guild is not even that easy in the first place thus there’s are only that many large guilds in this game. There are tons of small and medium sized guilds than large guilds. Anet didn’t make cross chat for large guilds, they made it for the small and medium size guilds, cross chat actually put some stress on the large guilds since more kind of people can now join them so much easier than before. Anet didn’t remove the influence because of large guilds, they did so for the small and medium sized guilds because they are the ones that complain about influence, too bad for solo guilds though.
There are things that are intentionally done for the small and medium sized guilds, nothing is intentionally done for the large ones except for limiting their growth for guild hall. However, anet also want to give “Guild” their rightful place and meanings by making people earn for that place, so that “Guild” won’t be just yet another “thing” in Gw2 which a solo player can earn everything by himself or herself.
I have a Solo Guild in Everquest 2. level 60, earned by me, solely since level 19, and it was a hell of a lot more work than anything here. I have one in GW as well. I also had one in SWG. In all cases these were “sole survivor” guilds as people stopped playing. Same as my Guild in GW2.
I earned all that my Solo guild here had by the rules in place. If they wanted a higher criterion going forward, fine, but taking away nearly all of what I had earned in game, following the rules in place then, is just wrong. Gating the ability to rebuild my guild to a purchase of HoT is even more wrong.
And I was fine not earning commendations and doing bounties and such. It was ok, that was group content. I never asked for the ability to solo every guild related activity.
There was already a lot of group centered guild activity, and never did I ask or expect that I could do those things.
I’m sure HoT guilds will include Solo guilds anyway. Non HoT guilds, no matter what the size, have been destroyed.
It really is not about Solo guilds. It is about destroying a core content accomplishment that has been here for years in order to further leverage an expansion purchase. Which, in my opinion, is both petty and shoddy.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
Disgusted.
NEVER buying this expac. I’ve bought several expacs worth of Gem Cards, think I’m done with that as well.
Where did they say that you may as well disband your guild without HoT? Must have missed that. Oh, right, they neglected to mention that fine point.
Losing buffs isn’t the issue. Not being able to do any upgrades to replace them without HoT is.
Feel free to tell me how I could have used a buff not quite finished building.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
Your guild storage is there. Anything in the queue auto-completed. Talk to the guild bank guy in LA in the same place he was yesterday.
Yes, I have my existing guild storage, that is not in question.
What I don’t seem to have (or have any use for, anymore), is the queued upgrade I paid for, for an upgrade to “Architecture”.
This upgrade was required to, subsequently, allow me to purchase a final upgrade to my bank space.
Which it now looks like I won’t be able to earn, on my own?
You have HoT, so you can earn upgrades, but you will have to get a guild hall and access the scribe trainer. Dunno about the Q’d bank upgrade. I lost anything that was not a consumable, my PENDINGs were 24 hr buffs, and they are gone.
Also peeved this was buried here. It is not a HoT issue, it is a normal, core game issue affected by NOT HAVING HoT.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
We can buy a merchant and anvil for a hall we can’t have. No Hall, no scribe trainer= no upgrades, no consumables.
Without HoT you can’t go beyond what you have today.
10k influence = 50 favor? What kind of math is this, when a banner that cost 200 influence now costs 500 favor?
This is seriously kitten. Expansions should add content and features, not take existing features away.
I Guarantee there will be no HoT purchase from me. Not when you pull this kind of low garbage to sell it.
I enjoyed making banners and sharing them. I enjoyed making upgrades for WvW and my guild catapults.
Now, I can’t make anything. I got 0 initiative refund for all that was taken away. My Guild has a storage chest, and nothing else.
I’m furious.
(edited by Teofa Tsavo.9863)
If I am reading correctly, No guild hall means no Scribe trainer.
Without a scribe a guild is worthless.
Wow. If true, it is underhanded and nasty.
Two questions.
Has this been tested with anything resembling the actual network latency most players of this game have?
Has this been tested with the horrific framerate stutter from massed particle effects?
This has been tried in MMOs before. Even the hyperbole isn’t new. Systems like this require the cursor/target to actually be where you see it on screen, and skills to fire without delay.
