Charr vs Human vs Asura vs Norn

in Lore

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

As far as Charr vs Norn goes, it depends. In this scenario, are all the races suddenly going, “Let’s have a WAR!”? If so, the Norn would actually be offensive for once, which they have never been against another nation. While historically, Norn fight individually, they’ve recently been learning how to fight as a group, as we see with the Wolfborn.

In other words, if we have a situation where the Norn race actually gets together and fights as an army, every other race is screwed. A single Norn is stronger than an entire Charr warband – we see this in ‘Movement of the World’; when the Charr first encountered the Norn, the charr assault was totally destroyed. The lore states that the charr would have only defeated the Norn (back then fighting as individuals) with an entire Legion devoted to it. So we’re talking a third of their forces.

As far as assassinating the heroes, that wouldn’t work – every Norn considers themselves a hero. Saying you’d send the Ash Legion to assassinate the heroes is like saying you’d just assassinate every Norn. And how would you even do it? The charr kinda stand out, and a follower of Snow Leopard would be just as stealthy as an Ash Legion charr.

That said, the norn would almost certainly lose an all-out war between them and the charr. The charr have better unit tactics and war material then the norn do. However, we’re talking about a four-way battle here – humans vs asura vs norn vs charr. If the races make the same assumption we are (specifically, that the charr are the greatest threat), they might simply all attack the charr first. In which case the charr would be utterly destroyed, and it would be humans vs asura vs norn left to duke it out.

And that is the problem. Every single Norn thinking themselves as a hero. If legendary heroes get assassinated, every single Norn will think their tactics is better or foolishly charge in front of the Blood Legion’s rifle.

It is like every single private soldier in the army promote themselves as a commander. Who is going to command who? Who’s tactics is right? Who is going to bother listen to the other? It is clearly a mess and nothing else.

The Chain of Command by the Charr is absolute. Every single soldier are disciplined and trained.

When the boastful Norn soldiers arrive in the frontlines, they will arrive to a disadvantageous battle only to get themselves bombarded with shells.

This is like a Roman army vs. Barbarians except the Romans assassinated all the Barbarian leaders.

Interesting, and just who did the Roman Empire fall to?

Charr society and chain of command is not absolute. One entire Legion has rejected it. Others have rejected the Treaty. We have Lions Arch and other Charr going a merchant direction, or mercenary, or Pact, as individuals without War Bands, no longer part of the Charr chain of command. The society is crumbling from what it was. Evon Gnashblade would sell munitions to all sides if he could get away with it.. that is the “new” charr demographic. More individuals, less Legionnaires.

Less Legionnaires to do the only thing the Charr leadership has shown it can do in the past. Send them out to die. Over and over. All that muscle, supposedly, and they barely managed to take Ascalon with Titan magic, and could not take Ebonhawke at all. Thrown out of Norn land, and then destroyed by Mursatt in Kryta.. the same Mursatt humans drove from Tyria. Laughable track record for an “Empire”.

Charr are weaker now. Messing with the Norn isn’t something they want to do, ever. They still recall the first time.

In spite of the snowflake status given them, the Charr aren’t much more than the arrogant, mouthy, filthy beasts they have always been.

I’d much rather have the staff developing new content and features, and fixing bugs, then dealing with the large amount of unreasonable people and their ridiculous, beat-the-dead-horse-some-more topics on the forums.

Darn customers are the bane of business, fersure! Who needs to know what THEY think!!

The little pastry shop down the street

Teofa Tsavo.9863

Well, I had visited the pastry shop that preceded the new one for years. I told many friends and was a regular customer.

When they announced a larger store, I was excited. I told more friends, assuring them that the new store would be the same quality in a more exciting location and staffed to provide new and different pastry while retaining the old. popular, signature products.

Then came the opening. The staff I knew were all gone or too busy to talk. I attempted to order my favorite old product, only to be told it had been replaced. Most of the menu had been replaced.

I asked if I could please have an Apple fritter with apples in it in place of Mt Dew flavored Gummy Worms. The employees looked at me blankly and said nothing.

A group of people I had never seen before got very upset with me, told me to go back to a shop I had never been to, explained loudly that gummy worms >apples in apple fritters, and demanded I just leave the shop forever. I noticed another group by the suggestions and comments box, intercepting and ripping suggestions apart to “protect” the new shop. From who, I wondered? Valuable long term customers?

Hmm. I knew the old shop was still open. I tried there. There was a single caretaker, who explained to me that I could get an Apple fritter from a vending machine there. Not fresh, not hot, dried out . But.. it still existed. And it still had apples in the fritters, even if they were years old. Surprisingly, they were still better than Mt Dew Gummy Worm fritters.

/shrug. lets play more bad analogy games yay!!!!

@Vayne. Once again, how can you possibly know the interior workings of Anet so “well” as to present yourself as spokesman for them? The constant mantra of “I’m right because I know what the Devs think” is getting tired and was never valid.

What would Gwen have thought of Tyria in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

I think she’d be pretty ticked that when the charr pressed up to the gates of Ascalon, Adelbern decided to rage-quit and take all his subjects down with him. I could see her view being “If the charr were to wipe us out, then so be it — so long as the last Ascalonian went down fighting. But our nation didn’t die at the hands of the charr. We died at the hands of our own king in a desperate, despicable and selfish act of cowardice.”

.

I doubt Gwen would embrace the Charr version of events. She was alive then, remember. No need to accept the lies.

From GW2 Wiki, King Adelbern.

“Accounts of this conflict differ between human and charr records. In human accounts, his forces fell to the charr and Adelbern was left to fight the charr alone. He eventually fought his way to the Imperator of the Flame Legion, wielder of the Claw of the Khan-Ur. The Claw clashed with Magdaer, Adelbern’s sword, and caused a spark of power that engulfed the land for leagues around. This event became known as the Foefire. "

Further, seeing that reconciliation with Pyre achieved nothing and changed nothing re their attitude as a race Gwen would see no reason to not hate the animals even more.

I’m torn on mega server for this posts sake. I think it was a nice idea in order to ‘fix’ low-pop servers w/o just destroying entire server communities. However, at the same time, they broke some things and destroyed some server communities. O.o It’s easy to see why this is a hot topic.

Why did they have to “fix” low-pop servers? There was nothing at all wrong with them. I like a low population server. That’s why I chose the one I did at the beginning. Now no matter where I go, I’m on an ultra-high population server, and it really annoys me.

The solution might have been to allow occasional free server transfers (say two to four weekends a year maybe?). People could gravitate towards the level of population that they liked until they found a suitable home. And WvW would (hopefully) not be seriously messed up if the free transfers happened infrequently enough.

Everyone gets to play “their way”. The world doesn’t get torn apart.

Agreed, I so miss the lower population. Immersion is gone, when nearly everything I do gets stampeded over by a ravening horde of strangers.

GW1 players how do you feel?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

Personally, I don’t find terribly much difference in terms of writing quality between GW1 and GW2. I mean, when you think about it, many of the elements that fans rage about in GW2 existed in GW1 as well.

“Because Scarlet?” I raise you with “Because Abaddon.”
Predictable storylines? Friend, you would to be blind and deaf not to see Vizier Khilbron being the Undead Lich coming from halfway across Tyria.
Trehearne stole our story? Kormir was stealing our stories before it was cool.

Come on, guys. Let’s not pretend GW1’s storytelling was amazing. If it was better than what GW2 has told so far, it’s not by so much to be a particularly kitten ing criticism.

What it is (in both cases) is… passable, which (sadly) is still superior to pretty much anyone else in the MMO genre. It’s like having a pinched nerve in a world where everyone has their spines crushed.

/shrug. Abbadon was a God. Scarlett was a snowflake vegetable. Bit of a difference there.

You can say both both GW and GW2 aren’t the pinnacle of of fantasy writing. Fair enough, but, one worked, one didn’t and hasn’t.

Had the same writers done GW, we would have spent 40 mins on a cutscene with Saidra and Evennia discussing all the curtains they would never pick out together. We would have known Saidra was doomed the first time we met her.

We would have sent Tahlkora to ask Koss to arrange meetings with Kormir.

The Gadd/Vekk father/son drama would have been worth an hour of dialog. Same with Koss/Melonni. Cynn/Menlo would have been at least 3 Campaigns worth of domestic squabbling breaking out at every turn.

Varesh would have laughed more. Lots more. Muahaa haaa laughing. After which the Harpy/Hylek alliance would have jumped in, followed by the Djinn/Eboga alliance. Then, in the middle of the wastes, we would have been beset by a gigantic wooden Badger and Corsairs on flying Carpets.

All thoughts of Shiro would have vanished as we became totally committed to solving the mantid mystery of Shing Jea island after the Harvest Temple. Togo would send Devona to his brother to arrange a summit.

LEY LINES!! And NOBODY in Tyria would ask what a “ley” was.

and so on

Aggression to players in teams unique to GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

All MMO’s I’ve played have had the Min/max elite.

It seems to be worse here due to the concentration of Pugs into a relative few dungeons. In most games the “elites” are off to the next new tier, leaving lower tier dungeons to be completed by a less hard core group.

I doubt the numbers are any worse than other games, you just happen to see it more because of the game structure.

The attitude always trickles down. Certain people see what it takes to do 50 Fractals and insist on the same group makeup to run easier content. Instead of thinking, they just echo what those players do.

Warrior would not have the energy to perform very many Necro skills. Warrior + caster is kinda iffy. Necro skills are high energy cost and you would not have the benefit of Soul Reaping.

Melee heals from AOE hits would still be Dervish. Some of the enchants do that.

So many bearbows exist because so many people who want to “help” you kill by using longbow #4 on the mob that you are meleeing.

No different than any other class with a launch or knockback. Hammer wars, Engie and Mes can be just as bad. People use skills they should not.

That is the drawback here. Too many weapons bars include a skill you shouldn’t use but very sparingly, if at all in group. You effectively lose a skill slot with no way to slot another. A Longbow ranger, in group, is essentially running with 3 useable skills.

Yay build diversity.

My point was the derv is far easier to play than another melee class, which used to be only primary melee class – as a mater of fact, the entire game is a lot easier to play now than it used to be, so there’s honestly nothing to fear.
Perhaps the OP should try out the derv himself first, and who knows, he might find it ez pzy.

Exactly. A hero can play a flash Derv. I VQ a lot with a Derv hero. I never use a War hero except to goof around. If an AI can play the class effectively, so can a new player.

Earth Derv with Splinter and smite buffs on is a thing of Beauty in pve.

Hmm, Vayne, I play Ranger archetype in every game. I found GW Ranger far superior to GW2 for one simple reason. I could leave the pet at home and be a Ranger, instead of a WoW hunter with poorer pet skills.

There is an end game planned. Unfortunately some people missed the notice on what end game is.

To some people end game means dungeons, raids, challenging content. That’s what end game means for some people. Probably not most people but some.

The end game here is the story. Anet wants to move the story forward, sort of like a serial. If you don’t buy into that concept then you’ll probably think there’s no end game.

You know all the other MMOs out there. I’d yet to play one with what I considered an end game.

Again, I have to wonder about all of the supposed “insider” knowledge you post re Anet plans, management, intentions and whatever else.

Simply put, you don’t have more knowledge of Anets inner workings than anyone else. All you have is guesses, opinions and your personal interpretations. Which, is fine.

Too much effort wasted trying to rationalize the way Scarlett was characterized, and the wasted effort is ongoing, creating yet more plot holes to be repaired down the line. if ever.

In addition the thing is just a mess of popular tropes and stock fanfic elements with little attempt to actually fit any of it to Tyria and the cultures. Nearly all fiction is derivative now, but little attempt was made to at least make some effort to fitting it to the Tyrian world.

And why should we have an expansion? Because GW1 had them? Because it will add a bunch of content that would be zerged through in a matter of days, and then more QQing about nothing to do. Granted they could have done some of the open world stuff differently, but this was mostly an experiment. To see the best way to implement open world story, and keep it permenant, as well as instanced. I wouldn’t go so far to say it was a fail, but it could have been done better. Also with so many people logging on the first day, all the events were way over crowded, and laggy. After a few weeks, im sure they will calm down, and actually be easier to do.

You do know that the open world content for this chapter is mostly old content with minor add ons? Stuff like adding another totem or piles of rubble to very old content is not, to me, new content.

Dervish is Elona, NF. You can do any campaign. After a certain level of progress you can get quests to travel to the other campaign. (you can’t access pre searing Prophecies)
NF will also have quests to Tyria and Cantha for sin and necro heroes.

NF is best to start, heroes early, bonus attribute points early, and 2nd class change early.

If you do start a Proph campaign, stay in Pre long enough to get a pile of Nick goodies. Combs are really nice for VQ later.

There’s no telling how many or how few lurkers there are- if people want to be heard, they have to be willing to speak up. I’m largely in favor of megaservers- they’ve mostly been positive for my experience, but it’s a little dishonest to act like the number of pages has no bearing on how important that thread is. This is not one or two people keeping the thread alive, either.

We’ve had other threads go dozens of pages and most of it was two people arguing.

Because some people feel the need to post to almost every negative comment about the megaserver regardless if the comment had merit or simply reflected a personal opinion.

@Karla agreed. WvW are the only truly dynamic zones in the game. (not counting the EoTM farmfest zone)

Sadly they are also the zones most ignored by the dev teams.

SWG GCW at the end had dynamic pve, in that if you killed enough enemy NPC forces in a zone the zone would flip to your faction and spawn allied units. It allowed PvE to work with the PvP in affecting control. Control of areas had consequences as in who had cities and services, and who could use them. The most humorous thing was that killing enough enemy NPC got you on the Bounty list, and a real player could hunt and kill you, PvP enabled or not.

Unfortunately Anet ignored factional dynamics for this game, although they did have them in Factions as the Lux/Kurz map control did “change the game” somewhat for everyone.

Ok then.

The funny thing is, they ARE static, you just don’t see them as such, because they’re wrapped around in cellophane, or something.

Why is it so hard to accept the game might not be as great as you picture it?

Agreed, Karla.

LoL. Save Moshpoipoi! Every… single… time I go through there.
Static is why we have the ravening horde doing the Frostgorge hampster wheel.
Static is why Shaman goes down faster than a tray of free Twinkies at a Walmart.
Static is why timers work.
etc.

A duck in a quaggan suit is still a duck. Even if the suit is unique to GW2. It’s still a duck.

well if you take a little break from farming perhaps next time you could like you know, defend moshpoipoi and prevent it being taken over in the first place so there is no saving to be done.

Also interesting statement:
“Static is why timers work.”

static means unchanging, if no change occurs what do exactly the timers do?

I don’t farm or zerg run, sorry. Don’t try ad hominem, you aren’t very good at it.

Defend Moshpoipoi. Why. It will only get overran again next cycle. over and over and over. I have..but I don’t do Hampster Wheel. Ring and chain events are not new and only interesting a couple of times. I did them when prior to Anet even announcing this game. Actually EQ2 had ring events that were random and not linked to a set location or time. You could not decide to go x place and “wait”.

Wow. A static event on a timed spawn lets people show up when it spawns. ie World Bosses. The event, and the time it spawns are static.

Still play the emulated version now and then.

Agreed. It was my first online MMO.

I really can’t help but think these are an easter egg reference to the ancient Tada Oh! Corporation of Earth and Beyond, and even before. EA was beset by Llamas back then generally, I think it started in early Sims/Maxis.

I hauled a “crate of Llamas” all over the galaxy. The EVE Tada Oh Corp had Llama as well.

At any rate, I saw the Llama and immediately heard Tada Oh! jingles playing.

Guessing the Ley Lines

Thank you, Obsidian. Ley lines bring un-needed baggage simply because of the widespread use them. People expect them to be what they already perceive them to be. A “thing” was wholly inserted bringing with it an already defined perception.

Even the name is nonsensical for Tyria. A “ley” is an archaic term for pastureland and fit the original premise of ley lines but fits tyrian magic in no way at all. (many new earth proponents are in fact using new terms to distance themselves from “ley lines”)

But.. a Magitechnical Matrix would have been a “new” thing even using an old concept. Norn could have explained it as the spirit of the world the spirits of the wild exist upon and draw from. Charr could explain it perhaps as the Conduits of Industry (rejecting magic). I would see Sylvari explaining is as holistic and currents entwining all growth. OFC, us silly humans would just say “The gods distribute magic in mysterious pathways, hur durr, bloodstones”. The Kodan would have tied it all into “Balance”, and so on.

Those are tip of the tongue examples.. but that opportunity to define with a cultural and Tyrian bias is gone. Every culture got “Ley lines” and appear to just accept the fact. Nobody asked “what’s a ley?”

It diminished the story and depth. IMO

Not everything said is an opinion, some are facts.
Some facts:
More than 6.5 million copies sold within 4 years (not so niche for the past standards).
Discovered map in Gw (April 2005 – October 2006).
10 professions.
More than 1319 skills (useful or not is an opinion) each profession could have access to.
Cheap (basic) Guild Hall for everyone.
Horizontal progression with low level cap.
In game store: 10 items (from mercenaries to name changing contract) + 17 costumes (~6.5% of the armor models, male and female merged together).
Free random minipets for the birthday of each of your characters.
Pokémon on steroids

I look at this not as a comparison of GW to GW2, but pointing out that GW was far from the limited success, minor niche game some seem to dismiss it as.

It launched shortly after WoW and tbh, those numbers in that period of WoW domination are pretty impressive. GW proved that you could be “different” and succeed even if the genre largely ignored the lesson.

[Suggestion] Option to rearrange skill bar buttons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teofa Tsavo.9863

Teofa Tsavo.9863

Saying this is needed because it was possible in GW1 is silly. I could explain the multitude of differences between the 2 skill systems and why the current GW2 skill placement just makes sense and is easily recognizable to any player, but I have the feeling nothing anyone would ever say to the OP would make a bit of difference.

Bottom line: The current skill placement is a design choice by the Devs and it’s pretty obvious they have no intention of changing that choice because your (possible OCD) situation makes you believe you need to change the keybinding (nothing wrong with that) and the skill images on the bar MUST match up.

Get over it, not gonna change.

One simple question. How would his skill bar customization effect your game, or any other players game in a negative manner? You would not even know, it would be client side. The skills themselves would not be affected.

It would be a simple QOL feature, client side. I really don’t understand the harsh reaction and hostility.

@Arghore I agree with most of what you said. I’ll just point out.. I’m not “hurt” by the use of the trope, just appalled. Any print Fantasy I read gets a quick trip to the garbage bin and an Author written off when I see it used. It is a pet peeve. A big one.

I think he mean’t non-NPC games of RPS (basically a bunch of players rolling dice in an alley).

Hmm. All three distinct emotes remain in game, in town. It can still be played.
I just did it.

Multiple searches come up with nothing but this thread.

OP and poster I quoted are incorrect re RPS without confirming source.

Rock paper scissors was removed from GW1? I’m sure it was still there at the last Canthan New Year. (It’s how I normally get my lunar fortunes.)

RPS is only allowed in instances not in town any more.

Link Source. RPS was in LA last New Year. No mention on GW wiki. I’ll assume your information is wrong.

The beginning of mounts?

Mounts is mechanically the same as these kites and thus a likely step forward?

Well race changing is mechanically the same as the heart where your character turn into a Sylvari in the Sylvari starter area.

But according to everyone and their grandma on this forum race changing is impossible and will never happen.

So I hereby declare that mounts are impossible and will never happen.

When they need income race changes will magically become possible.

Were Ursan and PI popular skills ? Of course they were, but claiming that everyone used or relied on them is ludicrous.

No, it’s evident now you were not active in GW1 during that time. Ursan Blessing was used everywhere, from DoA to FoW/UW, all the way to solo elite mission clears. Other metas at the time, such kitten, almost went defunct.

Anet nerfed it due to complaints about everyone requiring R8 ursan, and that is a fact.

Meta isn’t “everyone”. Never has been. Even during the ursan hype people happily played the game with viable builds that did not include it. Facts..Not “everyone” had EoTN. Not “everyone” with EoTN had the rank to use it. Nobody in PvP used it.. they couldn’t.

“Everyone” didn’t use it, or feel compelled to. It got nerfed because it was OP.
