Player housing – gold sink and a waste of resources. I want guild halls WAY before this trivial little nut.

I don’t think that housing would be that much of a money sink, unless a player wants it to be. While I really dig the idea of housing, I have to agree with you….I would rather see guild halls before housing. If they both happened at the same time, that would just be a really nice bonus!

Highest I’ve won was 4v1 on my ranger. People underestimate a ranger, and I take advantage of that and show them the error of their ways. You could give me any other class with any build, I would stick with a ranger. They are great small scale.

I hope I can get to that point on my ranger in WvW some day. I have been trying like crazy to learn from my mistakes and get better, and I have had a couple 1v1 and 1v2 battles where I have come out on top, but I attributed that not to my skill…more to the fact that the others were just inexperienced.

85%+ of my total game time is on a ranger, and I have over 3k hours clocked. It does take some learning and getting used to, and honestly ranger is probably the steepest learning curve of all the classes. But if you want to come out on top and truly dedicate yourself, time will be the only limiting factor for you.

Thanks. That is truly encouraging. I love my ranger and am always experimenting with different weapon sets and such. I imagine I will eventually get a ton of time in WvW, as I refuse to give up on him.

At the same time, I have other classes that I will try from time to time out there, just for the fun of it. But the ranger is my #1 out there, no matter how inept I might currently be at him.

Lolz, you guys talking about some failed games… but I see no one remembers things where the history began.

Player Housing was in 1st MMORPG ever – Ultima Online – almost 20 years ago ^^

I never played it, but the stories say that player housing in UO was a complete disaster.

As far as I remember, there was a bug when it came out that lasted two months if not longer that if you lost your ‘House Key’ you’d lose your house :P

Back to the topic, with Darks Ages although the housing expansion was nice, the ability for the user was limited by these ‘hook points’(for certain items), however Everquest 2 allowed a totally editable user experience being able to add floors to a home etc.

I think for Guild Wars 2 it is important to look at the community as a whole, one of the reasons for the MegaServer of GW2 was to populate zones again. The introduction of player housing would have a detrimental effect on the population of zones if the need to avoid the main city or hubs is taken away, therefore I think it would be important that a house is a house and that people still need to go to cities for crafting, merchants etc. (This is for personal housing – A guild hall main hub with all types of benefits is welcome in my books – something similar to GW1)

I’m not a role-player but it would be interesting to see how people who do role-play feel about housing. From previous experience of people customising their in game homes to Bars/Clubs and a general RP gathering area. At current I see all types of RP’ers in Rata Sum.

Some very good points, Blush.

Hopefully, if GW2 ever did player housing, they would do the same with it as they have done with other parts of the game. That is, taking most of the best aspects of several different games, and incorporating those into such an idea.

It might have been. I never played UO, so no idea. In DaoC, it was a huge success….Foundations was one of the better expansions in that game. It went quickly down hill after that expansion, imo. I am amazed that DaoC is still around today, albeit with an extremely small player base.

Haha, oh, how I love people thinking like that. They thinking: “A ranger, thats my bag!” Me evading their damage an taking them down or pulling them into an ambush depending on their numbers. So I benefit from the low average skill level of my profession.

I don’t judge a ranger, because he is a ranger, but by his weapon. In the case the ranger is running a longbow it is most likely that you will win the duel. Though there are some rangers that will still give you a tough fight even with longbow. But they are pretty rare.

I call it the bearbow problem. The only cure is education, but somehow many rangers are resinstent… They point out the descipion of the profession is declaring ranger as a ranged fighter… This works in PvE, but in PvP the rules change as the enemy is intelligent and they can’t deal with it…

I think part of the problem with so many rangers running ranged gear, is that, if they wanted a good melee fighter for zergs, why not just build a warrior or guardian instead?

Ranged rangers can be decent in WvW, in very certain situations. In a full zerg on zerg open field fight, they’re usually some of the first to go down, unless they’re extremely careful/smart……or if the enemy zerg is completely clueless and disorganized. I have been working diligently on trying to get my ranged ranger better in WvW, but will most likely eventually move to a mesmer and/or guardian, as they seem to be much more effective and helpful in a zerg in WvW.

Although, have been trying out a lb/sword-dagger setup a bit lately, and that is somewhat interesting…….certainly different, and much more useful in melee.

Gw2 most grindy game ever..?

perhaps ii play wrong.

Yeah, I’m fairly convinced that you do. It’s entirely subjective, though.

I barely ever do anything in GW2 that I feel isn’t fun. This mean that I usually play a maximum of 3 hours a day. I don’t complete my daily if I I don’t feel like it’s enjoyable.
I do the dungeons I want to; Even if it may be more gold-efficient dungeons to run, the game isn’t about making money (it’s not a job). The game is about having fun.
I sure would like to have an Incinerator, but that will take a few months since I don’t grind in this game. Grind is optional. There’s no hurry but the one you make.

OMG you sound like me.

Raising my hand, too. I have played previous mmos in the past like they were a job. And that’s no longer fun to me. The grind in this game is only there if you want it to be there. jmo, of course.

I also somewhat agree with attrail’s post. If you’re going to just pack up and run due to a few hackers/exploiters, then they have already won.

I will not quit because of such minor things, and I am sure deep down neither will others here. It is only frustration talking. What I do not agree with however is attrail’s method of making his point., which to me completely invalidates it. But that is going off topic somewhat.

I do agree with your points though. Anet probably are keeping quiet so as not to alert the hackers. It’s just so frustrating and people need to vent that frustration somewhere. So long as it is not insulting anyone, I see no harm in it. And it does at least let Anet know how bad it is getting. The more posts about people experiencing it the better. Just not insulting posts if possible.

Yea, I hear ya. It can get very frustrating. There was an older mmo I used to play that had a couple exploit holes in WvW. One, there were a couple zones where a player could actually climb inside some terrain features if one knew where the hole was, and then attack passing players impervious to counter attack. One other exploit was there were certain spots on castles where you could shoot/cast spells through the wall…….talk about a major pain in the butt for defenders to deal with.

One other hack in that game…..and it was a very bad one…..was that there was a ‘radar’ hack that was developed that would let you see on your map where other hostiles were, so you could easily plan ambushes and zerg kills. That lasted a few months until the game maker finally changed portions of their code, and squashed the radar users flat……banned almost all of the users, as well as making it not function correctly in game. Some of the users were the biggest point makers on the WvW points chart, and they used to brag about how ‘good’ they were in WvW……so many of us players got a huge laugh out of it all when several of those ‘good’ players suddenly disappeared from the game when the radar ban stick came out in full force…..lol.

So, hacks happen…..and usually game companies find a way to deal with them…..and yea, it can all be frustrating as heck.

Hang in there…….hopefully the problems will be dealt with.

I played Dark ages until late last year. This sounds like a cross over between DAoC and Everquest 2 style of housing. I’d back this idea 100%, it would be great if we could have crafted items that we could add to our own home!

Although crafting would enable us to create items for our home, there should be other methods like housing karma merchants and basic items for coin.

Yea, for housing to be worth it, imo….you would need the ability to have several different hook points in the house, depending on size of the house, for all sorts of things you could add to the interior…..similar to DaoC.

Housing was one of the nicer additions to DaoC imo…..that game used to be really cool years ago.

Plenty of Mythic devs working still so maybe they could hunt down one or two of the housing ones. A GW2 spin on how Daoc had its housing could go either way but it would likely be pretty nice.

Agreed.

Anet is probably trying to deal with this as best they can. But, unfortunately, I doubt if they can completely get rid of hackers/exploiters. I have played in other mmos where there was a much worse problem with hackers…..the game companies installed updates to deal with it, and while the hacker/exploiter problem got significantly less….it never completely disappeared.

My point is, as long as this sort of thing doesn’t happen very often, and is the exception rather than the rule, it won’t ruin WvW.

In other words, don’t panic. Yea, it sucks greatly when you’re on the other end of a hacker/exploiter….but the only thing you can do is report it as best you can(and as detailed and specifically as you can)……./shrug. I have been in WvW for awhile now, and have yet to see a hacker. (Doesn’t mean they don’t exist….just means I haven’t run into one, yet.)

And just because you don’t get any sort of response from Anet doesn’t mean they haven’t read your report or aren’t doing anything about it.

I agree with you Teon. I am sure Anet are aware and are looking into it.

I just hope they can put a stop to it before it gets out of hand. There is nothing that can spoil a game more than blatant unhindered hackers and cheaters.

I really don’t think it will get out of hand. Game companies know that hackers can ruin a game very quickly if they overrun it. Of all the mmos that I have played that had hackers/exploiters in them, not one of those game companies let it ever get out of hand……they usually jump on it pretty quickly, and are usually pretty mum about what they’re doing about it so as not to alert the hackers/exploiters.

I also somewhat agree with attrail’s post. If you’re going to just pack up and run due to a few hackers/exploiters, then they have already won.

There was player housing in an mmo I used to play called Dark Age of Camelot. You could build several different types of houses you could get, from low end to high end places. The higher end houses had more hook points for more vendors, crafting station, cosmetics, ports, etc. You could also put external cosmetics on the place, like different roofs, materials that the house was built from, guild banners, gardens, sitting areas, fountains, etc.

Just do a search on google for ‘daoc player housing’, and a link to the housing manual will come up showing how it looked and worked.

Might be kind of cool if GW2 did something like this, and gave the houses the abilities to have a crafting station or two, a trading post, a banker, vendor, and maybe a waypoint or gate to a specific city. It would, of course, have to be server specific….otherwise lots of the housing would be gone before the local server pop even got any.

However, this would not be on my list of priorities that I think Anet should put the most resources towards. It would be a nice feature down the line…..but certainly not a must have, imo.

Gw2 most grindy game ever..?

Nothing you have stated in this thread has in any way PROVEN you need Ascended gear to be “competative” (certainly not in WvW). Having BiS equipment does not make you best at anything (other than jumping on the grind bandwagon for BiS gear). There is NOTHING wrong with you wanting to improve your stats by crafting Ascended gear and I applaud your efforts, but who are actually trying to convince that it is absolutely necessary to play end game content? (because it is NOT required).

BTW some Elitist (yeah, I used the word) ideal that you MUST have Ascended gear or you are a “noob” or a 2nd rate player is NOT a valid “requirement” but a prejudicial viewpoint (that you have every right to fool yourself into believing).

I will caveat my statements by saying if your desire is to play high level Fractals, then Ascended gear IS needed (but for the ability to slot AR, not for the minor stat increases).

I will simply have to disagree. What you are calling being competitive in WvW is a real niche area (small group roaming for equivalent small groups, which rarely happens). Why do I say that? Because, for example, last night I took my level 33 character into WvW to level (and also for the AP of course), ended the night with 244 kills, 10+ tower captures, 2 SMC captures, something like 22 camps captured, don’t know how many dolyaks killed, etc. Compared to the guy running with me with full Ascended/Legendary? Exactly the same. We both left WvW with exactly the same results. If anything I had more kills because I could range AoE and he was melee.

I’m not saying there aren’t specific scenarios when being BiS for everything wouldn’t be a benefit, but to say it is even remotely required to be competitive is a complete lie and you know it. WvW is a numbers game, it always has been and it always will be. To base your argument around the rare 1v1 encounter in WvW (which if you are searching for 1v1s in WvW then you are doing your server a disservice because its a complete was of time and energy) is simply a weak argument.

Let’s talk FoTM/dungeons now. The majority of players won’t play above FoTM30 and absolutely no dungeon requires Ascended gear. I’ve run countless dungeons in full Exotic gear and never dragged my group down. I’ve run FoTM up to 30 in full Exotic/Ascended Acc and never dragged the group down. The only reason you even need Ascended armor passed FoTM30 is to get your AR higher, not because of the damage boost. If you could get 55+ AR on Exotic gear I guarantee you people would clear all FoTM in Exotic gear without issue. I know I would.

Fact is, you are grinding because you feel like grinding. For some reason you’ve convinced yourself you absolutely need these things to be competitive and/or not to drag your group down when that simply isn’t the reality, hate to break it to you.

High level fractals is the only argument you can make as to needing to get Ascended, because of the AR. For everything else it is completely unnecessary and has no bearing on your success whatsoever. If you want to do that niche content, then yes you will have to work harder than everyone else for it. They added content like this specifically for people that want to work harder for it.

Both quoted for complete, accurate truth! Great posts, Draknar and Grimm….I completely agree.

Seriously? If that is truly the case, then GW2 is most certainly not for you.

You might be right; I bought this game because I liked the GW2 Manifesto, but apparently they’ve taken a departure from said viewpoints.

No offense meant, but if you believe ANY mmo game company’s “manifesto”, then you’re being incredibly naive.

jmo

Stop saying “no offense meant” when that’s exactly what you’re trying to accomplish.

Regardless, the whole premise of GW2 was that it would be a different kind of MMO with a cosmetic end-game where you could enjoy the content that you actually want to play without fear of a gear treadmill. Not to mention that ANet “doesn’t make grindy games”.

Obviously, the game hasn’t stood up to its core principles since release. ANet has a tendency to tease players with a carrot-on-a-stick and I’ve learned to take anything that Colin says with a grain of salt.

Sorry, but I actually do mean “no offense meant”.

You, on the other hand, are arguing about a PvE point that you have absolutely no real experience with.

So who is being the hypocrite?

Mods, am sorry for this post, and feel free to infract me, but people arguing for the sake of arguing, with no real experience in a thread that is making a point about pugs in PvE……are just trying to stir the pot. Nothing else.

Again, my apologies if I am offending anyone and/or hijacking the thread. I am done with this completely pointless argument with someone who doesn’t even play PvE.

If people think this game is grindy, they have never played:
EVE Online (OMG the grind in this game), Ragnarok Online, World of Warcraft, RIFT, AION, or… Well, basically any other MMO on the market, past or present.

Ah, I see you have played grind hells, as well. I feel your pain…..been there done that.

This game’s “grind” is a breeze compared to those mmos.

This game’s grind at the upper levels is completely optional, and not needed, unless you’re a min/maxer……and even then it is far less compared to other mmos upper level grinds for the best gear/stats, imo.

My EVE Online sub just ended the day before last.
I made a good run, but I feel like after a year and a half of grinding, I made virtually no progress towards my end goal.
In fact, my end goal was probably a good 2 or 3 years away to be realistic.
So yes! I feel the same way about the grind in GW2! Completely optional, and even if you take it upon yourself to do it, it is nowhere near a true “grind”. :P

Wow, do I ever agree with you on EvE. Eve is a very cool and very different beast when it comes to mmos, but the grind is just phenomenally absurd. I have quit and resubbed to it several times…..and I always end up saying the same thing to myself about the grind….“are you completely nuts???!!!”……….lol……I would have to give my life over to the game to get to any of the upper levels.

I would call the police if someone holds a gun to your head and force you to only wear berserker.

So you’re saying that someone should call the police if they get kicked from a Fractal Group?

Good advice.

Nice strawman.

Sometimes it takes a strawman to counter a strawman.

At least my point still stands: getting kicked from your group for not running zerker is a real thing. A metaphorical gun to your head, if you will

You might see it that way, but I don’t.

When the guild I belong to does dungeon runs every Saturday, they don’t care what builds/experience and/or skill level shows up.

I don’t think I would want to run with dungeon pugs that kick a person for lack of a certain build, so no, it’s not even a metaphorical gun to my head.

And, ‘sometimes it takes a strawman to counter a strawman?’ Seriously? No offense meant, but that doesn’t make any logical sense.

And I have every intent to keep swinging my sword again.

And merely just wanting something is not a reason of why you should have it.

Then grinding is a reason why I should have it?

According to the game, yes.

If you disagree, then feel free to state why else you would deserve something other than “i want it”

Which supports my statement that it is grindy. Thank you!

Not to hijack the thread, but wouldn’t it be hilarious fun to put some hot air balloons in WvW?

Only if they add in ways to shoot them down as well.

Of course! And ways to shoot from them, as well.

It may be the least grindy mmorpg, go try other mmorpgs(especially f2p ones) and you will see.
Gw2 is the most casual/easy mmorpg I have ever played. Instead, I want to see more hardcore grindy stuff in this game.

No, thanks.

You can use one computer, you need 2 keyboards and 2 mice. It will split screen or you can use 2 monitors. I hope this helps, All jokes aside I did get a good chuckle. Hope this helps.

Just imagine the lagfest in WvW or a PvE boss battle with 2 players at once on something like this.

It is by far the most grindy game I’ve every played for any length of time.

Don’t even ask how many times I “swung a sword again”

Go play Eve Online, Everquest 1 or 2, Dark Age of Camelot, or Lord of the Rings Online for a couple months, then come back here and say that. If you’re still sane, that is.

And just to be clear, I really enjoyed Eve, DaoC, and LotrO……..but the grind in those games makes GW2 look like child’s play. (Not to mention even more mmos that I have played in the past that were much worse grinds than GW2……just these few come to mind when I think of hellish grind)

Forget 80, 59 is the biggest pain in the kitten there is…..80 was easy, you can solo up to Arah. 59, Retribution, is a much different animal

True…..retribution is a true pita to try solo…..although it can be done…..very, very carefully….(and with several deaths and ‘resume at last point’ retries)

You need full ascended in order to be competitive in this game. It is a horrible, expensive grind. Just wait until you see legendary armor!

No, you don’t. Nobody genuinely knows or cares what your armour is unless you’re constantly faceplanting Arah story in nothing but your undies or something silly. Nobody is currently demanding that teammates ping their armour before pressing on with a dungeon, or WvW or any other part of the game.

Well, I prefer to maximize my effectiveness in WvW and refuse to be at a stat disadvantage against other players, so ascended is a must. If you don’t think gear matters, feel free to throw on some greens and do the content because gear doesn’t matter right?

I understand the min/max mentality that you have, as have seen it in lots of mmos, but there are tons of people in this game who do just fine and are very competitive in all phases of GW2 in ‘just’ exotic gear.

That’s your opinion, which is perfectly fine. I just dont’ know why you think people should agree with you since it’s just your opinion.

My bad, forgot to add ‘jmo’……. and I fail to see where I stated that I think that people should agree with me……please quote me on that so I can fix it, as I don’t intend that. This is a forum and everyone is just stating their opinions, myself included.

Wait until you get to your final end story at level 80…..it’s a dungeon that you have to run with more than just you and a friend….which isn’t a big deal if you got a good guild or a few friends.

Well, I have neither of those. But I can find others for it in the LFG tool, right?

Absolutely. Or if you’re on the Kaineng server, give me a holler and my wife and I will come and do it with you, as we need it on some of our alts.

Oops…..forgot about the megaserver for a sec…..send me an ingame email when you need to do it and I will come help and see if my wife can help, as well….could probably get a guildie or two to come help as well

Altho, judging by your name…..you might be on the Euro servers….am on NA servers

Edit…..checked your blog, and turns out you’re on the west coast of NA…..my wife and I are in the pacific nw….so am serious….give me a holler in game and will be more than happy to help on that mission as I need it, too.

Guild Wars 1 has a grind to get max titles and Guild Wars 2 has a grind to get the end vanity items. It’s set up as the core of both games. They want you to earn them. Granted they didn’t do a very good job with the Legendaries in this game, but the no grind only referred to leveling not going after one of the end game goals.

ascended gear and ascended level swappable stats on legendaries are hardly mere “vanity” things.

And yet none of which are vital to the effective completion of much of the content in GW2, which can be achieved with exotics easily enough.

correct, not until anet finally implements harder content along with higher tiers of gear

my point still stands.

I fail too see how that statement makes your point any more valid or justified, for that matter.

read my previous posts in this thread and you will get it.

In my opinion, leveling is not fun

I’ve gotta say… GW2 has the most casual (and FAST) leveling of any MMO I’ve played in the last decade. If you find this “painful” you may want to find another genre entirely.

You do remember gw2 was advertised as “if you’ve never played an mmo this is the one for you.”

Many people here dislike other mmo’s for that exact reason. Things take too long to get to what people actually want to play.

That is an interesting question and distinction.

Is the original post about the process of leveling itself? Examples of better rewards for leveling? Speed (compared to)? Other?

Or…is this about leveling as a concept? Meaning, you want to come in Call of Duty on day one, gear up, and play ‘the end game’?

I’d like to skip leveling altogether. Chase gears/chase traits but forget the leveling.
Or make it shorter. This is my first mmo, and I find leveling to be quite dull, it’s just not what I’m after in this game.

But Guild Wars 2 is all about Exploration. And Exploration levels your character. I don’t know what you are after, but the zones of GW2 are beautiful, and exploring them is fun.

here’s the thing: I’ve already explored all of the zones, and some of them more than once across many alts. i have no reason to explor as much anymore. Now i just want to “play the way i want”, but I don’t really have that option anymore either.

Then take a break from the game. Sounds like you’re kind of burnt out on it. When that happens to me(in any mmo, that happens for me….just the nature of the genre) taking a break from the game for awhile does wonders.

Hear ya on the outnumbering in WvW, Shepherd. On Kaineng we have had a couple weeks in the tournament where we have been so outnumbered out there that it has been difficult to accomplish anything…..And yea, have been camped at our spawn point a few times, too. Fortunately, we have usually been able to accomplish quite a bit once the other two servers go to bed in those couple weeks. But yea, I can certainly understand your frustration when your server is massively outnumbered…..

Ya know, I think this is one of the better ideas I have seen mentioned on the forums. There is already a system in place in WvW for improving build/repair/supply skills. Why not transfer a portion of that to PvE in the case of Lion’s Arch? Make it so that as players repair and rebuild, that they get better at it. You could give xp for it, just like in WvW, and you could make it possible to have supply points, that increased in supply as players tore down destroyed buildings, salvaged wood and such, etc.

Would it work? I don’t know…..but I sure like the idea…..I think a lot of the players would come out and help rebuild Lion’s Arch.

Of course, the new design of the place would be up to Anet, but the players could help rebuild that new design.

Ok, after playing my mesmer for the first time in WvW last night……yeesh…..wish my ranger could take down enemies that fast! (And I was completely clueless on my mesmer last night, as I hadn’t played him in awhile) Plus, my incompetent mesmer even added some more usefullness to the zerg……..

I now would tend to agree with some of the comments here about how rangers could use a little bit of love….not a huge amount…..just some tweaking. (And yea, I have tried several different setups on my ranger…..not just lbbear….lb/sword-dagger with a dog has been very intriguing so far for my ranger……just got to get more used to the sword-dagger specials…..and yea, I play more of a power build, as I find it more challenging)
