Anet wake the hell up – no other class has over 1000 posts of complaints about how ludicrous it is.
^ this. everyday more and more posts are created about this silly overpowered class. Must be we’re all bad or the guy Anet uses to test the thief is missing half his brain.
Its in the numbers, massive damage far more than anything else except for the killshot (which should be toned down as well btw)
They need to control the amazing burst damage so people actually can enjoy a good fight.
I played this guy on a mesmer and he would wait until I missed a CnD and I was exposed for a few seconds and then he would root me and burst me down. Not with his sword either he used some other different abilities and it killed me every time.
perhaps he’s talking about the 2 second stun? not snare. which you can’t easily remove. Or maybe the sword dash which again is a stun not a snare.
either way they are very simple to remove. and that mesmer must be good to close the distance and burst you down in the 2 seconds he’s allowed.
On my guard, I kill thieves all the time. Last time was a 1v2 against a warrior and thief. Trapped thief with my hammer, thief dead.
On my mes I kill thieves all the time. 8 stacks of confusion will tear up a thief, not too mention blurred frenzy.
Hammer warrior = dead thief a lot of the time.
And so on and so on.

thieves can easily get out of a hammer snare. shadow step removes the condition, actually it removes 3 of them.
I am not going to lie, I too have had friends leave the game because of thieves.
my friends rage at getting stealth/blown up by them. They haven’t quit but they certainly rage quit after getting ganked a few times in a row. I left after10mins of WvW for the day when a thief completely destroyed a large group of us. It was silly to watch.
No one could see him or target him then he would appear next to someone and instantly kill them, then suddenly disappear. He wasn’t a thief he was like some vampire. He tried his opener on me and by the time I managed to dodge roll away I was at 25% health and a simple heartseeker finished me off.
Seriously something needs to be done already. Surely they must keep logs on the amount of damage thieves are doing. its 3x what any other class can produce and within seconds.
Notice how far away JQ and SoS stood away from each other.
all that shows is either SoS or JQ dropping AoE on the bridge to keep them back. Hardly proof of some master plan where we align with JQ to take down SBI.
I was expecting to see some screenshot of a secret meeting between jQ and SoS.
There are times we attack JQ but right now our biggest threat is SBI and that is who we will target. it just makes sense.
if your a thief then it doesn’t matter when you start, if you are any other class stick to the zerg because you will get destroyed by thieves within a second and unless you are thick skinned it may put you off WvW.
30 across the board? what class could beat a thief? bunker elementalist might put up a good fight with their mobility? A greatsword, mace/shield warrior if he plays it perfectly?

Fact is: every class has a tradeoff between damage and defense. Thiefs….don’t. High damage and easy survivability? Please
exactly! they hit you for 60%-100% of your health then re-stealth making them untargetable so I have to quickly drop my AoE which doesn’t knock them out of stealth it instead ticks for an embarrassing 200-300 damage per tick. Which they probably dodge out of anyway.

Unless you’re an Engineer, then first the first small step is -35%

I agree, some classes need a major look at their burst and small steps is going to take forever when its clear they have far more burst/damage than other classes.
thieves and warrior ranged attacks do more damage to me than any other class. Not to even mention thieves melee damage.
If I see a thief I sigh and think ok here comes a whole lot of hurt, then watch them stealth and prepare for impact, dodging randomly, and wait for the insane burst.
mesmer – meh, I enjoy those fights. Elementalist are long fights which normally go their way due to escape/heal/reengage tactic.
but thieves can burn in hell as far as I’m concerned.

Not sure I get that. We started on SoS being from the Oceanic region, so getting ‘stuck’ there wouldn’t be a bad thing at all. Haven’t moved from day 1.
If anything we need US guilds, PRX left to a euro server not so long ago and our remaining US guilds are putting up a good fight even though they are outnumbered.
If anything SoS would welcome US guilds to plug the holes, so to speak. Then pass the baton to the Oceanic guys to continue the fight.
if you like killing and mobility then level a thief. Ele are good but I have never seen a ele do amazing damage, they tend to slowly wear you down. Meanwhile a thieves damage is amazing. They hit harder than anything in the game, have stealth so they are hard to hit back and the damage is much higher than other classes on average. oh yeah, 50% speed increase + 2 blinks = you’ll be across the map in no time.
JQ is so far the only server that stood since release in Tier 1, I don’t know why are we still holding there.

I know looking back on the matchups history SoS hasn’t lost for the last 3 months. I do remember losing very badly right at the beginning. We got stomped badly by IoJ for a couple of weeks.

If its happening that much then your problem is more than just this game.
How do people have trouble killing thieves? I play guardian and a thief has never ever owned me or come close in wvw. With my hammer I immobilise knockback and use #2. Skill which that skill alone takes out half the thieves hp (especially if it crits for 5-6k). Also if a thief stealths don’t just sand still, move around so it’s harder to backstab. Most thieves I face either die in 5 seconds or stealth and run like little noobs while my hp is still above 90%. Learn to play your class and you will realise thieves are pretty weak.
I find these kinds of responses funny – I sometimes play a mesmer, killing thieves is easy I just blink his opener then decoy and burst him down with a phastasm/shatter combo. I move around a lot so its harder to backstab. Most thieves I play against either die in 5 secs or run like noobs without even touching me.
See how easy that was. I can write stories of easily killing thieves as well. But most will just roll their eyes and think bs. Just like I did when I read your post. Without some evidence like a video of you owning thieves no one will take a word of what you are saying seriously.
I just wish I can go back in time and find the first MMO that decided that stealth means total invisibility in bright daylight out in the open fields.
you’re right, its not stealth its invisibility. Its something a mage or wizard would have. I’ve never liked it in any MMO I’ve played because it gives players such an advantage.
but thieves are telling everyone thieves are fine, just a L2P issue. Anet is telling everyone you just use AoE and conditions. Don’t they know how long the cooldowns are on AoE and how little damage they do. The AoE on my guardian is a tiny little circle, my mesmer AoE is on a very long CD, My Hunter AoE hardly does any damage at all.

I saw one Anet guy in WvW and he was part of the zerg hiding behind a wall of players protecting him, my mate thief keep stealthing through them and blowing up the Anet guy. It was funny to watch and my mate doesn’t even spec glass cannon and he still dropped the Anet guy in seconds.

If thf’s are being annoying, then they are doing their job. Time to stop looking at thief as a “Punching Bag” cause you cant kill one. Look at your own class and figure out whats great about it. Anet just basically handed you the way to kill a thief on a silver platter.

Ahhh phew! now I can go out and kill thieves all day, didn’t realise it was conditions and AoE. Of course!! its so clear now! I’m wondering why people haven’t tried this before?!

Yup thread after thread of the same people complaining about the same thing over and over. And in every thread there people who say that the have no problems vs thief and even give you ideas how to beat them.
yeah I’ve seen those threads, they consist of – L2P your class, build toughness, dodge the opening attacking (even though they are stealthed), Do x when they come out of stealth (you know thieves also can dodge right?)

Yes I play a thief, and Ive killed 3000 people in WvW, a large part of them thiefs. And I didnt use stealth in my build. (Withdraw and RoI)
I have not noticed a rendering issue when killing thiefs that use stealth so must be something your end
Ive only died once from a thief in under two seconds: He used a back stab combo on me but was still able to get him to 5% health in 2 moves before i dropped in about a second flat as i saw him first and took the first move
Looked on youtube… No videos of this rendering issue either and no posts by dev acknowledging it. And lets be fair to Anet…. They acknowledge the issues players have raised pretty well

Most annoying class is thief !
They go stealth, then hit you and go out of stealth, but still u can’t see them because of rendering problem. They get me down until I get what’s going on. Their backstabbing is too OP and needs to get nerfed !By the way, I don’t get why people are saying mesmers are annoying… I play as an elementalist, mesmer and thief and I often kill them one way or another. Mesmers can’t be a match for thieves. There is a large gap between each of them and thief certainly is the most annoying…
actually Webley, Anet HAS posted on this an have admitted thieves are an issue due to the culling problem. They continued to say that they are trying to find a solution for the problem. It was a reply to video posted showing how the thief was attacking while stealthed and his opponent couldn’t even select/target him.
I was impressed with the SoS guys on SBI BL’s the other day. Esp the commander from Work, the guy had a great attitude and even though we were outnumbered and getting no help from JQ we kept throwing ourselves against superior numbers. AND even though sometimes we wiped we took out more than we lost and kept returning for more.
it was fun… look forward to doing it again.
lol those stats are probably not WvW because most people are now seeing the damage thieves are doing and building them. I see so many of them in WvW. Good thing is you can kill the underlevelled/undergeared ones but sooner or later they will become killing machines.
when I first heard Anet wasn’t going to give thieves perma stealth like they do it WoW I jumped for joy thinking these guys know how to make a thief class. Boy was I wrong.
3 months in some minor Dancing Dagger nerf (WvW) and the rest is explained by “L2P your class”
You have to listen to our mumble channel, every night you hear some outburst from a guy that has been ganked by a thief. “Oh look another kittening thief with their stupid kittening bullkitten damage!! kittening nerf that kitten!”

Initiative should not build while you are stealthed. This way if you choose to stealth for defensive reasons it will have an offensive drawback.
oh! I really like this idea. That way they won’t be able to infiltrator strike half way across the map in stealth after their burst failed to blow someone up in one second.
been a good fight so far. losing a big pvp guild has evened things out but good to see other commanders/guilds stepping up to take the slack.
Also SBI guys are dropping amazing loot. Me and a mate were comparing all the loot we got, people were linking named exotics. Pretty good haul for the night. I’ll be back soon.
Thobek, we have no speed boost in combat. In fact our mobility is rather lacking.
You don’t use a signet of shadows?

They all seem to run like the wind to me on top of that they are stealthed and inflitrator arrow twice while you can’t even target them. One minute they are there, the other – half way across the map.
Some thieves defend their dominate class by saying “its not the class its the culling issue”
Some thieves defend their extreme burst by saying “don’t build glass cannons – we’re the only ones allowed to do that”
Some thieves defend their ability to escape anytime “we need stealth, SB, SB, passive 25% speed boost because we’re squishy”
Anet’s solution was to reduce the damage of dancing daggers.. “there you go we fixed all the problems.”

I got a free 10 day trial to WoW, so me and some mates went back in to have a look at it after quitting from Cata.
The ONLY thing that was good about the game compared to GW2 was the fact I could fly around the map, or get on a ground mount to travel somewhere.
In fact it wasn’t the travelling that was good it was the fact your got to see the world from a different point of view and could ride a massive beast around. The actual travelling was boring.

Well, I think the only way to really deal with it is for those of us on Jade Quarry to actively go after them. We shouldn’t rely on other servers to catch our cheats for us, we need to police ourselves. The help of other servers is of course appreciated, such as the video above, but ultimately it’s our responsibility.
The problem with that is that the rest of the server is playing clean, it is one guild of trolls that acts independent from the rest of the server and if we don’t see them doing it how are we to take care of it. on top of that we cant do anything but report them so the more people who report them the better, because its one thing to have members of their own server report them but members of two servers they are not on should (and i say that with my fingers crossed) have some weight.
its quite sad really since a small bunch is giving the entire server a bad name. who knows how well JQ deserves their comeback considering how fast you see those guys cap the tower, they could be doing that everywhere and rushing around to every BL quickly capping keeps. Only took them all of a few minutes, within an hour they could of capped most the towers in all the BL’s.
These guys need to be indentified and banned. zero tolerance for exploiters like this.

once they fix the culling issue I’d like to see how that effects peoples opinion of thieves. At the moment due to culling you really even get to see or target the thief before they have hit you multiple times and restealthed. You’re basically fighting an invisable, untargetable enemy that does high burst damage… sounds to good to be true?

so someone posts a top player vs some thief and all of a sudden thieves are fine and we should all play like pros.
Problem is the skill cap on a thief is extremely low, you can spam 1 button against most players and win 9 times out of 10, or burst someone down within seconds while stealthed. Every thief video I see has nothing on that necro video, or the isocat videos. There you see them adjusting and trying to combat the thieves extreme damage, thieves just stealth then reopen, rinse and repeat. They barely react to things since they are the ones dominating the fight.

The culling bug allows thieves to run riot in WvW
basically thieves need a rework, reduce the spike combo damage, give them more options (does ANY thief ever use the sword?), fix the culling issue.
give them one infiltrator arrow escape not two in a row, it allows them to escape any combat with ease. Most have the passive 25% speed boost in WvW anyway. mesmers don’t have 2 blinks, or warriors 2 dashes… no other classs can just pop two teleports instantly.
What class do you play, cause you clearly don’t play ALL the other classes.
Pretty much every single class is capable of the same burst as thief if specced that way.
Other classes get at least one gap closer that moves them MUCH farther than infiltrator’s arrow.
lvl80 warrior, mesmer, ranger, guardian. And no I don’t hear people crying over these classes nearly as much as thieves. personaly I wouldn’t care less if they halved killshots damage because to play a class effectively you shouldn’t have to rely on one skill to get you by. Even hundred blades + quickness is too much burst. HB by itself is fine, just move out of the way. Heartseeker basically should be called heatseeker because you jump exactly to the target.
I would rather burst be toned down across all classes. Being killed in a few seconds is what the main issue is. Thieves should be a class that has one main damage like other classes (make it backstab) BUT what they shouldn’t be able to do is have a chain of hard hitting abilities that wreck people in seconds.
On my guardian which is built full toughness every other class does sub 1k hits on me except thieves which are normally 2k -4k easily. They have incredibly high damage if that fails, its stealth, SB, SB and they are half way across the map
They have incredibly high mobility, hit harder than warriors are more elusive than mesmers, dancing dagger does more AoE damage than elementalists, all you need them to do now is drop turrets and they would do an engineers job better than an engineer. Bunker elementalists might survive thieves if they managed to see them coming before exploding.
seriously people cry about thieves for a reason, its why top sPvP teams always use them.
People say L2P dodge the attacks, how do you dodge something when they are stealthed and you don’t even know its about to happen, even in a fight a thief will just sit back in stealth and watch their opponent dodge blindly hoping to escape, once their endurance is gone you open up on them. Its win/win.
5 thieves and you will never be overrun by a noob zerg.

Stealth builds are great for beginners…. It’s a confidence boost when u need it…allows u time to think instead of react…gives u the luxury of recovering from mistakes… And most importantly, promotes an avenue for disengagement for those who take dieing personally.

this is true, stealth is great for beginners, you can even see it in the video (not saying the OP is a beginner) but it allows you time to reposition yourself/time to think since you can’t be targetted, and since you are using ranged melee have to close the gap even though you’re moving faster than them. The can’t use a gap closer since you’re stealthed.
When you stealth people are just standing there waiting for you to appear and due to the lovely nature of culling you would normally get in a few cheap shots before even being targetable.
I notice now that when I get into a map and we have no commander (more common than you think with the SoS server – and we’re T1 atm) what happens to me and my friends is we leave the BL and join one which is more organised.
To me its the communication between groups that is very important, I find the crossed swords icon, contested points icon and commander icon important but I want more.
Do the commanders here feel the need for more tools to communicate with the rest of the players (mainly random non large guild groups)
In you party you can set waypoints, I would like commanders to assign groups waypoints, or have tools to send siege blueprints via pigeon carriers to groups and place an siege icon on their map to show where they should place it. Draw arrows showing what paths they should travel, areas to patrol/scout perhaps.
Sure you can choose to ignore commands but I think a lot won’t or would like feeling they are more than just part of the zerg.
I think the party system could be improved more so people aren’t roaming solo…

-unique rewards
-hire elite mobs (set loose a rampaging giant perhaps) like alterac valley summoning the giants

I enjoy pvp, the tactics and fighting against other players.
Don’t get me wrong I kind of agree with you, first I do it for fun but I would like to see Anet bring in ranks + titles asap. grunt, rookie, captain all the way up to some grandmaster of combat (or something like that) scaling exponentially in xp/kills needed.
Maybe some kind of trophy cabinet for tasks completed in WvW, medals, dogtags (scalps) – (yes I’m a big battlefield fan but I also chased down rewards and unlocks in that game, it worked)
just run a group of thieves – easy, they can escape combat better than anyone else and have great damage, two enemies dead within the first few seconds of the fight. Then if they are dumb enough to try and revive the fallen having 4-5 dancing daggers will blow the rest up.
you don’t need guardians or mesmers slowing down the team, only an elementalist can keep up with a fast moving pack of thieves.
But I wouldn’t want to be the elementalist because when the thieves stealth who do you think everyone will target.
-you need ranks (why they are not in the game yet is crazy)
-achievements (kill x attackers, x defenders, survive a fight with below 10% health…) just strange achievements to spice things up a bit.
- new areas to explore and use.
- new siege to build
- better commander UI (I used to like the commander screen in battlefield 2, commanders to deploy units, send out commands)
- better squad management options
- better player visability on the map (large groups of players should be seen not just commander tags, and commander tags should have different colours)
