Soon.
And by soon I mean “Once Anet realizes that this is a huge hit, the vast majority of the fanbase loves it and wants more and they get around to finishing (or starting?) the remaining zones which, although won’t be this month, should begin (pure guesswork) to manifest at some point this year”.
I am kinda oldish as well; didn’t start gaming till about 8 years ago, when I was doing some research on ‘the dangers of games’ (as in leading to violence…) in any case – I read somewhere that EQII was a game that a lot of women liked. So I decided to try playing. It took me all of 5 mins to fall in love – and the love lasted 7 years…
With some changes in my life – one being, like many in the above stated, simply not having the time – I have not played for almost a year. But I knew that some of my guildies (shout out to Silver Sanctum of Freeport; I know some of you all are in here…) from EQII had started playing GW2 – so the other day I went to the page and it had the game on sale… and here I am.
And I haven’t had so much fun since I first discovered Norrath… :P
Slightly off topic if I may briefly… I’m curious about your research. If you don’t mind my asking, at the time did you have a particular bias going into your research, for example expecting to find a correlation between games and violence or conversely expecting to find no such relation exists? This is just for personal curiousity, I’d find it interesting if you once were against gaming until you gave it a try yourself and reached a different conclusion. Thanks!
A game without a subscription will never die.
This is a false statement . it depends on the quality of the game and the financial soundness of the company . Many free games have gone poof over the years
I figured that was obvious. Anyway neither of those apply to GW2 in the first place.
Unless there are serious developmental mistakes this game will be active until Guild Wars 3.
They’ve been making serious developmental mistakes since launch. Doesn’t seem to have had much of an adverse effect. Though it’s hard to tell without subscription numbers to use for a relative comparison. The hiring page is pretty much the only clear evidence that ANet isn’t hurting.
Serious developmental mistakes? I’ve put in… well… lots of hours, and still yet to see any “serious developmental mistakes”. Maybe you’re expressing an opinion and mistakenly asserted it as fact? Could you elaborate please?
I’m not sure how long they will be able to sustain this though. Their Achilles heel is a AAA MMO targeted to a mature audience. The Disney stuff might be tolerable for awhile but; it’ll get dumped really fast. Your average MMO gamers is over 30 and is demanding
maturefun content.Fixed that for you. I’m an average MMO gamer over 30, therefore I’m as entitled to generalize about the entire demographic as you are.
I’m not generalizing. Its a fact. MMO’s are not appealing to younger audiences. They might buy the game; play it till level 10 or 20 then quit.
It probably has something to do with how the younger generations seek something for nothing and are too impatient to work towards something. The entitled generation. The ones that grew up with credit cards, smart phones and google.
You stated as “fact” that we’re looking for what you call “mature” content. I’ve seen what Scarlet Blade is offering and how they’re selling themselves… I disagree. You’re statement is opinion, not fact. Give me fun, pleasing content. Give me something I enjoy, even if it’s a nostalgic romp down an 8-bit memory lane. Or maybe it’s a differing opinion on what “mature” is? To me, “mature” content includes that where I can sit down with my two kids and play together knowing it’ll be a rewarding and “safe” experience for us all.
(Note: Scarlet Blade is used as an example simply because they’re selling themselves as a “mature MMO”. The fact that nudity can be purchased in their cash shop, however, in my opinion pushes them to an immature level not seen in recent MMO history. There was no implication that you prefer a SB type of game in any way, shape or form.)

Dang it! Thought someone found a hidden room with a Happy Days theme.
I am disappoint.
So, we’ve established two basic facts now regarding the Super Adventure Box.
1. If they remove it, people will die.
2. They need to expand on it… for the children. (Not that we adults would continue to play it… nooooo, not that… for the children.)
While I appreciate the cutesy clouds and terrible graphics are supposed to trigger a nostalgic response from me and make this new content fun, I can really only say 1 thing..
If I wanted to play a mario, I’d be playing mario.
I want to play Guild wars 2. Please spend your resources on content for that game.
Yeah really… I don’t know why this isn’t a straightforward concept, but it seems to confuse the bejesus out of a ton of people.
What confuses us is the fact that there are still people incapable of realizing one very basic yet very important fact. This IS GW2.
I’ve finally realised why I can’t enjoy or begin to enjoy this game even though it’s amazing and is in my favorite genre.
I’m not the demographic at which they are aiming for.
With the “Super Box Adventure” commercial I realised GW2 is made for the 35 year old gamers, or gamers generally older than me in their late 20s to 30s, who love this nostalgic feeling of 8bit games and bad american commercials. I didn’t grow up with this so to me it’s just not something I can relate to on any level.
With no time constrains and content available to anyone at any skill level, they are aiming this game at ppl who have a wife and possibly kids, gamers who don’t have that much time in the day to actually play games in general, in another term casual players who don’t have all the hours in the day to play. That isn’t me i’m not a casual gamer, I have hours for college work (not uni), and games. I’m not constrain by casual hours.
I’m not looking for an arcade game or an adventure game to play, a 8 bit platformer or a platformer in general. I’m looking to play an mmorpg. Mini games are fun but when the bulk of my fun from the game is coming from mini games, i might aswell be playing a real adventure, platformer or arcade game than a water downed version of such in an MMORPG.
I’m a 46 year old gamer and I played all of the 8-bit games back in the day. That being said, I think the new patch content is just silly. My opinion.
Of course it’s silly! That’s the point! Silly! Fun! Silly fun even! Look, a lot of people in our age bracket have simply forgotten that it’s OK to be silly and have fun. It’s OK to let down what’s left of our hair every now and then and play for the sake of playing.
That is a very good idea, but i already tried that. The items just dont show up period, bomb equipt or not =/
My fiance who also plays, he got both the whip and the candle. No problems with him with them showing up in his invintory.
So your fiancee is the one into whips and hot wax?
No no no!!! <:o Not this month. At an unspecified time. Certainly not in the next month.
Josh… that’s a long time to make a Princess wait. She will not be amused.
There you go ArenaNet. If you remove the Super Adventure Box, people will die. There could be legal ramifications, let alone the moral ones.
Do what’s right.
I’m 35 and this thread is making me feel like it.
I’m sorry
I didn’t want to make anyone feel bad, just saying that GW2 has a lot of things that show people like me weren’t their focus when designing said things
(if that makes sense)
I think a more correct assumption would be that “people like you” aren’t their only focus. There are a myriad of types of gamers out there. Generations are being spanned these days. I’m extremely pleased with the “something for everyone” approach as opposed to the “all for one demographic” approach.
Now quit worrying about your particular demographic and go play and have fun! Danged kids…
Dear Blackgate.
I sincerely apologize for my notable absence from WvW this past day or so. You see, I had just finished tidying up my lab in Rata Sum, stepped outside and there was this box…
Apparently user feedback will be a determining factor regarding if/when we see more of this work of 8 bit art.
This is now the third or fourth post that I see kittening about the fun content, as I said before relax or ignore it. And yes it’s kittening around…..8 bit music on the login screen omg can’t take it my world is serious please, no can’t take 3 sec of 8 bit music while I log in….sorry but this is pathetic.
What’s more pathetic is that you need to hear it 3 seconds while logging in. 3 seconds? Really what is the point?
Eh… am I the only one that pauses and listens longer than that?
… rant …
If you need me, I’ll be watching Game of Thrones. I can’t take any more of this kids stuff.
Would you mind sending me your excess gold and crafting materials before you go? I could use them.
I think it’s nice they haven’t forgotten that we “seasoned” gamers are actually still alive and breathing. You can have a company that targets the “KungkittenPanda” only crowd, or one that remembers the whole history of gaming and all the players from all generations.
I saw it in a couple shops in the game, but I forget exactly where.
Eh… ok, that’s funny. By “in the game” I mean “In the game within the game”.
Nice point OP. Fun content, skins instead of power… did I mention fun?
Super Box… fun.
Don’t ever let this die. Amazingly done by an amazing company.
I just came back and I’m sad to see no one in starting zones anymore as I re-rolled a new character so I could get back into the game.
I’m currently on Maguuma and I was on Darkhaven before using some gold to Transfer to what I thought was a more populated server.
Anyone know which servers are actually populated? Kinda sucks not being able to do group events and such since no one is in these areas anymore, :’(.
P.S I came back like a week ago before this event started
Right now, my friend, all roads lead to Rata Sum.
OK folks, enough of the verbosity, let’s have a simple, one-word feedback using words pulled out of my A’s. Regarding Super Adventure Box, please choose one word only:
Amazing
Average
Awful
That’s it, one word. No need for discussion in this thread, there’s plenty for that. Plenty of troll threads, praise threads, etc. Just one word.
For me: Amazing.
So why are we getting handed Super Mario Bros?
You also notice on the box it says “Arena Net”. No one does holiday style content like ANet.
Colin et. al., you never cease to amaze me. This is fantastic!
So Riot, Agg and FoE are all leaving?
Dunno about Agg and FoE but we don’t have any plans to move as of now.
Confirmed, they moved to T8
Really? I hope it’s not because they couldn’t handle the competition. Too bad… it was fun saying “Agg zerg” on TS. I don’t know why it was fun, it just was. Agg zerg. Agg zerg. Heh…
The problem is that so many people are trained from earlier MMOs to look for the carrot that they fail to see the buffet they just walked past.
that means, bg is gone with 2 major guilds + 1 medium size guild saying bbye.
What? Why would guilds be leaving Blackgate? That’s a good server, puts up one helluva fight… dang. Looks like JQ broke another one.
They can be tough as they want, but if they got some dramas with the other guild or the server itself – They won’t last. And thats what just happened. They might be a good server, but without a strong community and nope nope they wont last in the long run.
Ah kitten That’s too bad, I’ve been enjoying the T1 match up of late. I remember people complaining way back that there would never be that familiarity of your enemies with the server vs server, but take a look. We may not be familiar with individual players, but we’re certainly familiar with guilds as an entity and other servers as a whole. If BG folds that’ll poop on my familiarity and I will be un-amused.
But wait, we have 8, 8 whole abilities with 5 tiers that are completely… boring. I understand not wanting to affect the game much (like RR’s in DAoC), but come on, 5% less damage to/from a guard? Does nobody have an imagination?
You may need to ask that question of yourself. Any smaller guilds or groups that specialize in camp flipping will find their jobs a bit easier with the guard upgrades. If you’re in a small guild, and that’s most of what you do, those are ideal.
WvW is disappointing because it takes so much time away from the PvE aspect of the game.

My rank is 20, highest on SoR server (that we know of) is 24.
Going for supply cap I see?
Oh… a 5, a 3 and a 1. Swapping characters and acting as a scout tends to be detrimental to ranking up in WXP.
Yeah… it does make it nearly impossible to hide. Although, looking at a wall and seeing 50 enemy nameplates through the wall does give nice intel.
Or are we just seeing them in their full glory for the first time? I’m really not sure and suspect at least a good part of the latter.
I think… I think I miss culling a little. Remember the “good old days” when you’d be running along and see a handful of enemies so you’d go over there and BOOM! you’re dead? Yeah, that was nice because you died suddenly, a little confused, laughed it off and respawned. Now… now though… you see this huge sea of enemies all at once! I get scared. Terrified! I start running… they inevitably catch me and I die scared. Sometimes I need to change clothes after. Ignorance was bliss. But then again, there’s something to be said for adrenaline surges… maybe not having culling isn’t that bad.
Seriously, what’s actually changed? We’re seeing the full zerg (again, are they bigger or just seen for the first time?), I’m noticing scouting is indeed more effective when you can accurately (relatively) report how many are going where before they get there (although sometimes people don’t show up to defend thinking they can’t win… grr…), the game is running severely smoother. Anyone notice other changes to the meta the patch brought?
Another: I swap characters a lot less now due to Wxp being character bound. Used to flip between alts as needed, now I’m sticking to one much more.
… when the Weather Channel shows a map of the country… and you check for X’s.
Why is it that patch day keeps bringing back memories of Heavy in TF2?
They explained already that there were some issues with ascended this patch and they’ll be coming soon. Relax.
Relax? PvE players have been getting all the love, why should WvW players settle for less?
Ignoring the WvW updates doesn’t make them non-existent.
Culling is -not- removed. There is a universal limit on all servers of 300 I believe
Seeing as the population cap for a given WvW map is lower than 300… what’s the problem?
Pets/clones/NPC’s
Don’t get me wrong, it is far better than it was and view distance is far better but it has not been “removed” so to speak.
Culling is removed. Deal with it. What you have now is a decision by the system what to render. Over 300 default is nameplates only. Then there’s the values for full rendering and low qual rendering.
You’ll see everyone. It’s what you see of everyone that has been changed.

There are already too many commanders, and plenty of them that shouldn’t be.
Because no one takes down the oil and cannon before placing rams, right?
Thanks Matt! You have… oh… 2 hours before I get home from work. Plenty of time!
(Because, you know, only my schedule is relevant on the entire planet, yes?)
•Catapult damage no longer affects rams through gates
This will be interesting
Kind of overdue – was one of the most weirdest “pro” tips that I learned.
Dealing damage through the doors feels really weird – with anything.
But I guess rams will still damage you if you’re on the other side of the gate trying to repair it? Hmm… I don’t like that there’s no mention of anything added defensively to make up for this loss of defensive ability.
Here’s my advice. Eliminate any server that has guilds which tell you not to go to their rival server. It’s like reverse recruiting.
If you ask any of the guilds who have recently transferred to JQ, they will tell you that without a doubt the most transfer friendly server is JQ. We let guilds make their own hours, choose their own maps and run how they want to run.
We support our guilds and work as a team.
Above all, we have a lot of fun doing it. Frequently, I have to take breaks because I am laughing so hard.
If you’re more about people than about numbers and ratings and who caps who and who is this or that, come to JQ. We have real people, not canned!
lol own hours/choose maps etc cuz you have SOOO many people it doesn’t matter which map and when anyone queues to… lol
No. We’ve always done this. Even when we had huge gaps in coverage. That’s how we attracted the transfers we got. Ask Strike Force or PRX why they came to JQ.
It’s true. Each week there are meetings seeing who wants to go where, and there are guilds that quite readily will jump onto maps that may need more because they choose to do so. There’s a ton of freedom to be found on JQ.
So much JQ hate it makes me sad. Here’s the skinny on JQ though. We “work” our posteriors off most of the time and have a lot of great, dedicated people that really enjoy the WvW experience and try to get the most out of it. Like I said earlier, everyone is welcome to our community, excepting of course the ram-troll. So feel free to contact someone on JQ just for a chat if you’re interested to get a feel of who we are and what we do (which you should consider doing before going to any server).
Wherever you go, best of luck. Just remember, the sun never sets in the Quarry.
The only thing GW2 needs relating to Trinity is the leather outfit she wore in The Matrix.
It may be subtle, but WvW will change from this. Zergs will be seen from a distance now charging to their destinations, scouts will be able to report more reliable intel as a result more quickly. Defenses can be mustered faster, I see great battles ensuing where before easy flips would happen.
Of course, I’m an optimist. But… things will change, in a good way.
The addition of the WvW progression system doesn’t impact regular character leveling at all. Characters will still get regular XP in the usual way and they’ll also get WXP so characters below level 80 can be leveled simultaneously while they advance their world rank.
Does the actual level of a player that you get a kill on affect the amount of WXP you earn at all? If I kill a level 2 that hadn’t been killed for an hour will I get the same WXP as I would killing a level 80 that hadn’t been killed for an hour?
