Anyone consider the thought that Lyssa might be both chaotic and calm at the same time? She is after all a twin goddess comprised of Ilya and Lyss.
Sort of yes. To be fair most people are pointing this out in the thread. I think the OP is looking at LS1 through a condensed video rather than firsthand experience, which means it is understandable they might look upon it wistfully without knowing what we know.
Exactly. And I will say it a third time: Regardless of whether one liked S1 or didn’t, it still leaves a huuuuuge gap in the story at its current state that isn’t filled properly (neither with fractals nor with the lame summary by the LA NPC).
I am currently playing S2 for the 5th or 6th time, and it is also way better than anything that HoT and S3 provided (although S3 had the enjoyable “teaching Aurene” story mission as well the cool Divinity’s Reach story mission, and Canach, which is always a plus).
But that is beside the point, too. Like I said, as a dev, you need to do something to close that gap for newer players, because the current state is unacceptable.
In the end, it boils down to a business decision. If it doesn’t make business sense to divert resources from adding content that brings in revenue (like the new expansion) to adding content that will not bring additional revenue (like converting the S1 format to S2 and later format), then they’re simply not going to do it. Keep in mind that other than their playerbase, they are also answerable to their shareholders.
Should they add S1? Yes, I think they should.
Will they add S1? No, it is very unlikely.
I still despise the mix of divine powers and technology
Agree 110%. Gods don’t/shouldn’t need technology to get stuff done. It undermines the value and meaning of divinity.
Except the human gods aren’t divine, they are aliens from another planet. Therefore using technology isn’t a problem.
Where did you get that idea? Just because their avatars walked the earth doesn’t make them flesh and blood.
Also, aren’t most deities “alien” by concept?
Exactly! Furthermore, their abilities and kind of magic they hold is shown to have unique properties that make it divine (such as repelling minions of Elder Dragons).
A better way to describe these “gods” is the phrase “dumb as a post”. They come all the way from their home planet with their pet humans and what’s the first thing they do? They build a city on top of a sleeping elder dragon. This is the very definition of stupid. Then to make matters worse they mess with the bloodstone. When they figure out they screwed up, they can’t agree on how to fix the problem and end up exiling one of their own. Now one of them has to come back to Tyria because apparently, he’s too dumb to figure out how to get back home.
Divine? Not a chance. A few fries short of a happy meal, most likely.
Sure, but your happy meal still can’t repel minions of Elder Dragons :P
This is a real thread…?
[…] and then the whole story ends and we get the cinematic and we see Gods’ Return.
I really really hope that other Gods will come back to Tyria.
…AND WITH THEM (insert drumroll) MONKS !
Please, please, please, bring back the flagship profession of Guild Wars. I want to smite my way through Tyria on a cool Shaolin-based, tattooed Monk. (sighs) <3
I always thought Mesmers were the flagship profession of Guild Wars. They are unique to Guild Wars and I have not seen anything like them in any other game. Monks are just your standard healer class.

You are aware of the fact that there are plants that grow in salt water as well as along the shore lines, right?
As for the argument that it would take too long: What was the point of a “cleansing”, which by the way proved that with its magic growth returns immediately, when it shows no effect at all outside of the cave?
True, but I was trying to picture a landscape much like Kryta and I don’t think that will be possible with all the salt water. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on that as well lol

I mean, it’s been years now and it doesn’t make much sense, conceptually (in regard of the term “cleansing”; we should at least see nature regrow, no?).
Debatable, actually. It takes a lot longer than most expect for plants to colonize a large area that previously had none (living) – see what Danikat wrote earlier in the thread.
Personally, I’d love LW map in eastern Orr, toward the land connection and thus closer to areas that weren’t completely corrupted. That could be a truly living place!
Plus the land had been submerged under the sea for many years. It’s saturated with so much salt water I think any flora would have a hard time growing there.
Someone’s really upset about something…
The devs have stated that Orr is basically stuck in time. It’s partly like that as new players wouldn’t have defeated Zhaitan yet, so Orr “should not” be cleansed for them.
This is the correct reason why Orr is still the way it is. Much like most other maps in game.
I hope a future LS map is located in a recovering Orr, just for my 2 cents.
I was going to say the same thing. To show a “cleansed” Orr would mean introducing a new map that is free from Zhaitan’s corruption.
The question then is, what would this “cleasned” Orr look like? What kind of flora and fauna would the map be populated with? What kind of events can we expect to see? What hostile mobs can we expect to run into? What sort of lore would tie in to this map?
I don’t think ANET will put in a new map without answering any of those questions. In other words, they won’t put in a map like that just for the sake of putting it in.

LS1 was not this perfectly packaged season that everyone now thinks it was. There were more complaints in season 1 than I’ve seen during any other time in the life of GW2. People just forget how it really was back then. This reminds me of a comment WoodenPotatoes once made:
“One day we will all look back at season 1 with rose-tinted glasses and talk about how great it was.” (paraphrased)
I knew he was right then. This thread has proven that now.

I am not sure. Balthazar used different sword in final instance and he sent his hounds to kill us
I had the same thought, but maybe those hounds were illusions, too? After all, they were too weak to be a God’s pets.
OR… we’re just that awesome
I really don’t see a reason to farm any of those after I’ve completed the Druid Stone collection. Maybe for Empyreal but even isn’t something I really need right now.

Interesting! Maybe I’ll look at that. I’m not working on the legendary armor mainly because I’ve never done a raid (mostly because I don’t have a decent group). I am working on the legendary backpiece though.

This has been documented on the wiki (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ancient_Hollow_Propagation) but I guess not everyone is a geek like me and reads the wiki so it’s helpful to have a thread like this which reaches a wider audience. Thanks for spreading the goodness!
- Ruling some afterlives.
Did I mention Zhaitan?
As for ruling afterlives, Zhaitan doesn’t really do that. He simply corrupts corpses and they become reanimated with the appearance of undead. They cannot be considered as truly undead (even though they are sometimes referred to as such) since they are just corrupt minions of Zhaitan, no different from the Mordrem (corrupt minions of Mordremoth) or the Branded (corrupt minions of Kralkatorrik). In contrast, Grenth actually rules the afterlife in that, the souls of the dead go to the Underworld, which is his realm. This, by the way, is another point of divinity. The fact that gods have their own realms, while the Elder Dragons all dwell in Tyria.
- Having influence over the very center of the multiverse (the Hall of Heroes).
???? I don’t understand? How can this prove their divinity?
Because only beings considered divine have been able to do that. If non-divine beings had the ability to do this, then even the Elder Dragons would have been capable of it, but the dragons have no such ability.
- Having an indestructible powersource that, without a vessel, would destroy more than just the world it is on (as shown with Abaddon’s death and the story journal entry following such).
Did you see the simulation Taimi performed regarding the result of the fight P vs J? It seems that the Dragons have a powersource that, without a vessel can destroy the world. If it can destroy more than the world, it not matter anymore. We will be dead
Abaddon’s death threatened not just his own realm, but extended out of it and to Tyria as well. The Elder Dragon’s deaths only threaten Tyria.
-The ability to deify other beings (their avatars are effectively of demigod status by appearances).
I keep my doubts regarding this aspect. A god can create everything bellow him. That means he cannot create a God. So, a human can not became a true god.
I’ll clear your doubts right here and right now:
“After the defeat of Abaddon, his power threatened to run out of control and bring darkness to the world regardless of the heroes’ efforts. At this point, the leader of the Order of the Sunspears, Spearmarshal Kormir, who had been given the gift to absorb this power by the avatars of the Five Gods in the Temple of Abaddon, stepped into the source of the power and was transformed into the Goddess of Secrets.” (Source: https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Goddess_of_Truth)
- Unintentionlly blinding those who look too long upon them
Even our character can (temporarily) blind the opponents. A powerful mage can permanently do this. Even looking (for too long) in Sun can permanently blind you. This is not something defining a God
Our character’s ability to blind is nowhere near the level of the gods. See Malchor who was permanently blinded. We have no instances in the world of Guild Wars where a powerful mage has permanently blinded anyone. Just because the sun can blind you doesn’t mean it is divine because we are not defining divinity solely by the ability to blind others. It is being suggested that causing blindness is a result of divinity, not the other way around. So yes, you are correct that it does not define a god, but this would be just one of the many aspects that collectively cause humanity in Guild Wars to designate a being as a god. Also, curiously, you say God (with capital G) instead of god. I want to point out that to many, God refers to the god of Abrahamic religions which is an all powerful entity separate from the term god which in Guild Wars, humanity uses to refer to one of the Six. You seem to be comparing God with god, which in my opinion is comparing apples to oranges.
- Reshaping the world on a massive scale, to the point of being capable of such from another dimension (as shown with Abaddon transforming Tyria during Nightfall).
Zhaitan raised the sunken realm of Orr, changing the world on a massive scale. When Kralkatorik retreated to the South he reshaped the world in this path. Not a deed exclusive to a God
You are missing the context about reshaping here. The way the Elder Dragons have “reshaped” the world has been a side effect of their rising and cannot be considered as intentional reshaping which is what the gods did. The gods intentionally reshaped the world for its dwellers and/or their followers (evil gods like Abaddon included). There have been non-living entities that have “reshaped” the world like the Elder Dragons. Case in point: The Cataclysm, otherwise known as the sinking of Orr due to the Lost Scrolls. Zhaitan rose Orr but all it took to sink it was invoking a spell from the Lost Scrolls so I wouldn’t call Zhaitan’s feat divine or anywhere close to it. Same with Kralkatorrik whose flight created the Brand. This can easily be compared to the Searing of Ascalon. It reshaped Ascalon but that was also in no way a divine act. Kralkatorrik’s feat can easily be achieved by using the Cauldron of Cataclysm.
Continued below in next post…
Marjory said she sensed death from him, right?
Did she? I thought she said something along the lines of being interested in the fact that he came back from the dead. Not that he did, as it turns out.
This is what the conversation looks like.
<Character name>: What are you doing? He absorbed the Bloodstone’s power. We obviously can’t just easily put him down if his story doesn’t check out.
Marjory Delaqua: He’s touched death, Commander, and now he’s back… There’s something… The necromancer in me wants to find out more.
Marjory Delaqua: And…who knows?
I’d like to add that both Ignis and Aestus have latin names, similar to the Titans from GW1. We first encounter the Titans in GW1 in the Ring of Fire Islands which is also where Ignis and Aestus are located. Wondering if there is a connection between them, if at all. Seems like a far stretch but then why give the destroyers latin names?
Excellent point! This is one of those things where there really is no way to please everyone.
Like I stated many times in my previous posts: It can’t be that hard (as in, yes, it is feasible) to slightly differ the dialogue for every race to fit their racial demeanor and tone (so that, for instance, a Charr character wouldn’t come across as a teddy bear). It is not that hard to set flags in programming that say, “If character Charr, then select response #3.” They can speak the same in content, but phrase it according to their race. Not that difficult, really.
Oh I was referring to the community that complains when ANET makes us a special snowflake and then still complains when we’re not that special snowflake anymore. I totally agree that racial dialogues can be implemented and in fact we’ve already seen this on numerous occasions. I don’t think it would be hard, but I do think it’s a fair bit of work due to the sheer number of race and gender combinations.
and it’s kinda immersion breaking to have every player character as Commander/Guild Leader/Dragon Slaying Demigod Savior.
That’s a problem with all MMOs that try to make the PC into a “special snowflake.” A prime offender for example is Blade and Souls: Your character is the last survivor of the Hong Moon school, yet as soon as out of the personal instances, you see – of course – hundreds of other “sole survivors” running around. But on the other hand people will complain like madmen when they are NOT special snowflakes; see all the pre-HoT hateposts and QQs about Treaharne “stealing” your accomplishments and Caladbolg from you.
Excellent point! This is one of those things where there really is no way to please everyone.
“Dragons were not always the main antagonists of Guild Wars 2. According to The Making of Guild Wars 2 book, original drafts for story included demons and angelic beings descending to the world to judge it.”
Source: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Elder_Dragon
How likely is it that we will see the story head in the direction of angels and demons?
Would you even be interested in such a story?
I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this.
Maybe.
But the existence of the map in the dat files is by far not even an inkling of reason to believe we’d go to the Fissure of Woe. Unlike the Caudecus face dungeon, which was even in the game since release as it was part of the dungeon’s actual zone.
Fair point but I’m stressing it because I noticed a pattern of maps being brought into the game. So if the pattern holds up, we see FoW. If it doesn’t, then I guess the pattern ends there and I was wrong. However, I’m still convinced we’ll see FoW for reasons below.
Though I’m doubtful we’ll go to the Fissure of Woe at all. Based on lore, humans had been looking for the gods, and their realms would have been among the first they’d look – we know they have some tenuous access to the realms still, as we see Priestess Rhie pull a soul from the Underworld during the human storyline.
This would mean that Balthazar hadn’t been to his own realm in 250 years, so why would we bother going there now just because he returned to Tyria as less than a god?
I disagree. Humanity has had access to at least two of the gods’ realms for a number of years and not once did we come across them in their own realms. So we can’t definitively say whether he has or hasn’t been to his own realm in 250 years. Balthazar’s biggest enemy lore-wise has always been Menzies. We know Balthazar has been weakened, so logic dictates that this must have caused a shift in their never ending war. The likeliest outcome is we learn that Balthazar gathered more power to fend off Menzies who somehow got the upper hand in their war and took over FoW. We also know that at this point in the story, the PC really doesn’t not want a crazy god of fire and war on Tyria since said god has explicitly mentioned he doesn’t care about the fate of Tyria. So in an effort to save Tyria and return this crazy god back to where he came from, we will have to investigate what caused Balthazar to lose his powers. That to me sounds like a good enough reason to go to FoW.
All of this is what I think is the most likely case given what we know so far based on years of existing lore and recent story events. Of course, ANET can always shoehorn in a completely new enemy and your only reason to see FoW in that case would go out the window…
Fissure of Woe is coming to the game. Whether as an explorable map or more likely as a raid. A while back WoodenPotatoes did a series on Tyria 3D which took a look at exploring some of the inaccessible maps.
That map had actually been confirmed to just be a once-QA-now-developer toying around with the tools. This is why the map has so many Orrian assets and even uses the old dead-Zhaitan model.
Yes the current inaccessible FoW map reuses some models and it most likely will end up looking different from what we saw in Tyria 3D, that is, no more reused Orrian assets. This was the case with Lake Doric which was featured in Tyria 3D and when it finally got included in the game, it too was different.
That map, unlike the Caudecus face dungeon, has no bearing on intended use. While that was made long before Episode 4 (or even Season 3), it was always planned that we would fight Caudecus. There’s probably a good chance that they intended us to kill Caudecus in the CM dungeon – like we did with Kudu and Gaheron – but they opted against it and thus that face dungeon was left unused for years.
We do have a reason now though with the introduction of Balthazar. FoW is his realm.
In the wardbough event the druids just attack the npcs out of nowhere and then blame you and the npcs for being intruders even after the npc leader says we meant no harm. They can all go die for all I care.
While the NPCs hadn’t caused any physical harm yet, they had done the damage the moment they intruded on druid lands. The very fact that the entire living story (including all the NPCs, us, Primordus, and even Balthazar) is taking place in that map is kittening the druids off. So the druids aren’t entirely in the wrong here.
Two words: Dhuum or Forgotten.
That’s three words…
Draconis Mons is …map that I …spent the most time on because I found it the most interesting.
Let’s see, a user named Vesuvius favors the map with the biggest and most volcanic mountain in the game.
Wow… uhhh… that never occurred to me… I’m questioning my very existence right now…
Naw, sometimes a coincidence is just remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection.
Vesuvius and Draconis Mons. A double volcano! What does it meeeeeaaannnnn?! T_T https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQSNhk5ICTI

Draconis Mons is the first map in this season that I actually map completed and spent the most time on because I found it the most interesting. Yes, it took me a little while to get used to it but once I did, it has proven to be the most entertaining one. It was just a matter of putting in a little bit of effort to learn the map, otherwise I can see why people would be frustrated.
I like how people keep throwing the term “deus ex machina” around without realizing what they think it means is not what it really means.
Fissure of Woe is coming to the game. Whether as an explorable map or more likely as a raid. A while back WoodenPotatoes did a series on Tyria 3D which took a look at exploring some of the inaccessible maps. I remember seeing the little arena where we fight Caudecus in one of his videos loooong before the chapter about Caudecus was released. In that same series, he also explored a map that looked a lot like the Fissure of Woe, complete with a model of the Eternal Forgemaster as well. So if the Caudecus map made it into the game, it is likely (very very likely given the recent events in the living story) that we will be going to the Fissure of Woe.
That’s almost as elaborate as:
Oh, there’s a heart task that requires me to kill spiders, and there’s even a spider Webby Mom boss, that means that the deposed god Arachnea is now confirmed, and we go back to Abaddon’s roots, and things are going to go wild with spiders now!
On the contrary, the Caudecus boss fight map with the many faces actually did end up going into the game. This is an irrefutable fact. There was enough evidence in game at the time about White Mantle activity and their link to Caudecus. Going by that same logic, we now have confirmation of Balthazar in GW2 whose domain actually is the Fissure of Woe (an inaccessible map that exists right now in our GW2 client). Again, all facts.
Your example points to nothing in game right now that would suggest the introduction of Arachnia. There are no mentions of Arachnia or any suggestions that Webby has any links or even remote connections to Arachnia. Heck, nothing even in the dat file. So I’d say my speculation is pretty elaborate.

One of my Biggest Criticisms about the HoT expansion is the method in how you learned your elite specialization. Although I understand that they didn’t want to splinter players off from each other in different directions, I feel that giving each Profession a unique path to walk, either through a collection for a new armor set or something that dives into the lore of each elite spec will help to increase play ability across multiple profession and give a better understanding about how each of them fit into the lore of GW2.
I think they may have been planning something but dropped it because they had to hit the deadline for release or some other reason. Things like Braham (guardian) taking on his mother’s longbow. Guardian + longbow = Dragonhunter elite spec. Or Marjory (necromancer) taking on her sister’s greatsword. Necromancer + greatsword = Reaper elite spec. Sure sounds like they wanted to add it to lore but stopped midway.
Duels,Duels,Duels
Yes! My Dark Magician will send you to the Shadow Realm!
There has been enough information sprinkled around the game since HoT that makes this scenario very plausible. Rytlock was chasing Sohothin, a sword of Orrian origin and from a time when the gods were still on Tyria, more specifically, in Orr.
My guess is that the sword found its way to the gods in the Mists probably through some form of affinity to them or the gods sensed the sword’s presence in the Mists and they came to it curious why a sword from their time in Tyria is in the Mists now. Eventually Rytlock comes across the sword and therefore runs into the gods as well. What happened after that is what Rytlock has been hiding from us.
On a side note, from this point onwards, the future of Rytlock I’d like to see is what will end up happening with Logan (who btw was intended to get Magdaer). They will together cleanse Ascalon of their ghost problem, which can only be done when both Sohothin and Magdaer come together. It is possible we will see one final father-son reunion of Adelbern and Rurik who will finally come to terms with each other. This coming together will be symbolic on many levels. It will represent the coming together of the two swords, the king and the prince, and humans and charr.

Something tells me that Balthazar has been ousted by Menzies or another entity who defeated him and claimed the role of God of War, but in a not honourable way, hence precipitating him toward his current actions. At least, it would make sense of his behaviour.
This is my theory too. His line “They abated me, they dimmed might light… But now they will see me.” indicates a loss of godhood as well.
To me it sounded like he was talking about the Dragons. He was giving us a reason as to why he was acting the way he did towards the Dragons, but we can’t be sure about that.
“Now they will see me”
This doesn’t make sense if “they” are the dragons.
It makes sense to me. Especially if you assume that the reason the gods of tyria left is because the dragons were waking up. Then, having the dragons be the ones “dimming his light” is quite plausible.
I don’t think it was the dragons though. The way I saw it was it is heavily implied that something else caused the loss of Balthazar’s divinity. He is simply using the dragons as a means to regain power to get back at whatever caused his fall.
Dear lord… this again…?
I don’t think the Elder Dragons die at all since they are on a cycle of rising again and again after many thousands of years. Dying would mean that they are permanently dead and would never rise again. I think whenever anyone says that an Elder Dragon is dead, what they really mean is that they’ve gone back to whatever state they were in prior to waking up.
True and False
The Elder Dragon, at least is the theory being raised now, must exist. I plot similarly seen in Pirates of the Carribean “The Ship Must Have A Captain”.
As it stands, the popular theory is that the elder dragons play a vital role in the engine of the Eternal Alchemy, and that by killing the ED the engine stops spurring. That doesn’t mean it’s destroyed. The magic dissipates and does other stuff elsewhere. So it’s my belief that the ego Zhaitan and Mordremoth are dead, but the conceptual Elder Dragon still exists, and will rise again in one form or another, because the world demands it to exist.I mean, that’s my theory, it’s not a fact. But I do strongly belief that the ego of Zhaitan and Mordremoth is truly dead.
Does that mean the next time Zhaitan or Mordremoth rise, will they remember their previous rising? Will they even have the same domains of magic? Or are you saying that the Elder Dragon will now contain a new ego or identity and may possibly be masters of other domains of magic with no recollection of their last rising.
