Crab toss daily...again

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Vick.6805

Vick.6805

I agree with the OP.

I will admit up front that I don’t really like crab toss. However, even looking at it as objectively as I can, I don’t feel that the crab toss win achievement is as reasonable as the similar Keg Brawl wins daily.

With the Keg Brawl wins daily, you have an entire team of players who win each match. The teams are also randomized for each match, which forces at least some variety, and makes it unlikely that the previous losing team will get punished repeatedly by a stacked opposing team.

In Crab Toss, the players in each round are not randomized at all, unless you actively leave and rejoin another match. If there’s one person who is by far more skilled than everyone else, this effectively blocks progress on the daily. Which leads to: the game awards one person a win per round (unless there’s a tie). Even just this one difference illustrates why it will require a much higher time commitment for moderately-skilled players to complete this daily.

TLDR I have no problem with Crab Toss dailies remaining. I just hope ANet will read this and remove the win requirement and change it to number of matches played, steals, eliminations, or carries. I think those would be a much more reasonable time commitment for daily categories.

LFG

Frankly I’m surprised no one has said this yet. Yes, there’s a website, but nothing beats an in-game “looking for group” tab so there’s no minimizing.

I posted that two posts above you….

Oh hey. so it would seem. hidden in the list of things. I apologize. You said it first. Let me reword my statement.

Frankly I’m surprised there are not more people asking for this here.

That’s because we have asked, begged, yelled, screamed, stamped until we are blue in the face, and still don’t have a basic feature that comes with even F2P games.

In conclusion, we have given up on a LFG tool because it’s never coming, like a lot of other things we have been waiting forever for.

Actually, they’ve officially stated that an in-game LFG tool will be ready before the end of 2013.

Yep. In fact, I remember seeing something on Reddit that the data-miners had found the basis for the LFG tool in the dat file after one of the recent patches. I’m just too lazy to try to find it again. :P

The way the skills and classes/dual classing worked and trinity

This, although I don’t care one way or another about bringing back the trinity.

The dual class system, massive skill pools, build craft, and depth of possible strategy were what defined GW, and every single one of them is missing in GW2.

EDIT: Just felt the need to state that I am violently opposed to re-introducing henchmen and AI companions. They ruined many social aspects of GW, and enough of GW2 is solo-able as it is.

It doesn’t help that from what I’ve read in map chat and /s while in the arena, most people out there do not understand how this achievement works (i.e. hold crab while everyone else is eliminated). I hope ANet revises the achievement tooltip to make it clearer.

I don’t understand where your complaint is coming from. If you did 4/5, then why didn’t you spend the extra 5 minutes to finish the conversations? That content was available for an extended period of time, to the point that people were complaining that the F&F segments were too drawn out.

I’m sympathetic, since I hate when I have permanently-unfinished achievements, but I don’t think this particular situation was ANet’s fault.

As a fellow achievement monger, I like doing as many of the dailies as I can, too, but if you’re that frustrated with the crab toss game, then you need to reevaluate if that single achievement point is worth the annoyance.

EDIT: I agree that the activities that involve player vs player should not be included in the PvE daily categories, including WvW, Keg Brawl, and Crab Toss.

Even with yesterday’s patch, I don’t feel like Southsun has changed much at all.

Yes, there are some new forts built, but the zone’s mobs and mechanics are still more annoyance than they’re worth, despite that parts of the terrain are beautiful. The best part is still the geyser jumping puzzle, IMO, but that’s not new.

I’m hoping the upcoming LS installments change things drastically, because otherwise the only way to keep people in Southsun will be making the magic find buff permanent.

Do you wish Alliance Battles were in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vick.6805

Vick.6805

Some things I liked about AB, looking back at it:

The Alliance Battle system balanced the possibility of pre-made 4-man groups with the randomness of getting 3 separate groups put together into a 12-person team.

The AB maps were also successfully designed to discourage zerging, because that mindset almost always ended in failure. Solo capping was possible for very good players, but otherwise, staying in three separate groups of four was rewarded.

The AB maps were also large enough that a single player could avoid any and all combat unrelated to capture points if he/she chose.

AB also made different builds viable on different maps, simply because of the advantages available to each side. Minion Master is the best example I can remember, as it tended to work well on the balanced maps, but not on the castle maps because of the larger distances between cap points.

I think FA and JQ were successful because their objectives could be met using varied strategies, and both encouraged people to play with evolving build synergies similarly to the more hardcore PvP arenas (even though, as with anything, cookie cutter builds were developed eventually).

But, I think the most important thing among all three areas was that all classes had equally viable builds and strategies available. Right off the top of my head, I could name at least one viable build for each of the 10 classes, even after not playing the game for a good four years.

That balance and variability of builds was probably the #1 reason why GW was so successful across the board. Unfortunately, GW2’s weapon-based skill system removed a large portion of the strategy and build-craft that made GW so much fun.

I don’t want to look at a player’s character and automatically know five of their skills based on what weapon(s) they’re holding. Humorous as it was, I want a random warrior to throw a meteor shower at me once in a while if they want to.

Premium Option...

in Suggestions

Posted by: Vick.6805

Vick.6805

If you read these forums at all, you can see that people are already upset enough about so much of the new content being exclusive to the gem store (and the RNG makes it even less tolerable). My prediction is that adding a ‘premium’ cash-only tier to the gem store would be ANet signing GW2’s death warrant.

Regarding their original philosophy with a Buy-to-Play game, the only defense ANet has with even having a gem store is that it offers both in-game and cash purchase options. If they remove the in-game currency options, even just for some of the items, they really have given up on their entire development philosophy.

To be fair, I don’t see that happening. ANet seems to be listening to players and learning from their mistakes, by allowing the Southsun RNG chests to drop from mobs, completely separately from gem store purchases.

Mobile invulnerability skills like Mist Form, and teleportation skills like Blink work well for that hallway. Using those types of skills, you can definitely get to the safe spots to either side of the far doorway. Before doing that, though, you need to coordinate the timing and the strategy with your team and point out where those spots are while the red trap circles are visible so everyone knows where they’re going. In addition, if you don’t have reflection, repeatedly blinding the three mobs works well, too.

Why is CM always a nightmare?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Vick.6805

Vick.6805

I agree that CM is probably my least favorite dungeon right now, but its issue is pretty straightforward, IMO.

Too many of the mobs are linked together into overwhelming groups. This makes control very difficult, and pulling the mobs in smaller, more manageable groups is next to impossible. Large groups might not be a problem normally, except that CM’s mob clusters also have a large proportion of silver-trims compared to normal trash mobs.

This leads to people skipping a large portion of the mobs entirely. However, if you have anyone in the group that doesn’t know the methods/paths for skipping, they can pull all of the mobs everyone else skipped to the group and result in a wipe anyway.

Honestly, I think all ANet needs to do is unlink some of the mobs so that careful pulling is possible.

Vick.6805

I have no problem with ANet making a profit, or with people who want to gamble, but crafting has been almost entirely neglected since launch. At one point crafting was the best non-RNG way to attain cool stuff, but that passed quickly.

When new recipes are added, why do they go to the mystic forge? When new weapons, armor, and townclothes are added, why do they go to the gem store?

When ANet finally does add something to crafting, the recipes are only attainable through random drops (dungeon jewelcrafting recipes), instead of the existing discovery system, or the recipes aren’t even learnable (Sentinel Insignias).

C’mon ANet…balance it out a little.

best boss encounter ever

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Vick.6805

Vick.6805

There were a lot of really nice touches in this dungeon. Just to name a few:

1) The tunneling effect for the first hallway is a nice twist on getting the party into the dungeon, instead of just walking through a door.

2) Getting to the first ori node was simple, yet reminiscent of old-school platformers.

3) The dungeon’s ‘spiral into the abyss’ setup was fun. I had fun just standing on the path and looking at everything from all angles. Kudos to whoever created the 60-story lava falls and the central machinery tower. The whole environment was well done.

4) The off-path corpses were a nice touch. I’m hoping we see more of this type of thing, maybe implementing something similar to Link’s bombs or EotN’s Light of Deldrimor skill that opens up randomized treasure rooms or rare-spawn merchants in the permanent dungeons.

5) The final boss fight is challenging without being punishing, and the cut scenes are a huge improvement over the 2-person conversations in the rest of the game, IMO.

The one big thing that still needs work throughout all of the game’s up-leveling areas is that non-80 characters still seem to be at a huge disadvantage. The worst effect is that mobs seem to prioritize non-80s with aggro. I’m not sure what the answer is, but I just wanted to mention that it still needs consideration.

Overall, very well done.

I think my argument would be for more armor options across the board, which I’m sure ANet will do as they release more content.

As far as skimpy armor choices…it’s not ALWAYS about sex appeal (although I won’t try to say it doesn’t play a part). Honestly, I chose skimpy armors for several of my characters to show off some of the racial traits (the Norn tattoos and the Sylvari bioluminescence especially) since with most of the realistic armors those are obscured to the point that you’ll never see them again.

I agree that skimpy armors should be balanced between both genders.

Mega Boss scaling

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vick.6805

Vick.6805

Ideas for the encounters:

Jungle Worm - dunno. The poor thing dies before I can see it. I don’t even know what its mechanics are.

Shadow Behemoth - I think this encounter could use some of the mechanics like the Shiro encounters in Factions: In one mission (I’m ashamed to say I forget the name), the player group has to find and destroy nodes to remove the shield from the central ritual. In Imperial Sanctum, people get transported into the dungeon path and have to run/fight their way back to the boss. This fight has the potential to be quite nostalgic for people who remember GW’s Underworld.

Fire Elemental - I don’t think this guy’s mechanics need much of a change, it just needs to scale up better. The only thing I might add would be some sort of environmental weapon for new players that don’t happen to have ranged weapons yet. It might be fun if there was some sort of optional Asuran Fire Suppression system in the room that the players could work together to activate.

Frozen Maw - This event chain needs a major overhaul. Escorting the NPC, waves of grawl should spawn in large numbers to take him down (this needs to scale for the 100 or so players that show up). The dragon totem needs mechanics of its own. Make it do something to defend itself! This shaman is supposedly one of the head honchos of the Sons of Svanir, and yet he summons six or nine (I forget) Sons to defend him after the dragon totem is destroyed. If I were one of those summoned, I would’ve peed myself seeing how many players I was about to attack. The portals should not be closeable, and the ice elementals should keep spawning until the shaman is dead. The shaman himself needs to have mechanics more on-level with the guy that spawns at the end of the Dome event chain. He’s actually fun to fight. (As a side note: I find it very funny that the Shaman has a line of dialogue saying “How did you get to me so fast?!?”)

Tequatl - I think this fight could be reworked as a defense-style encounter, where players have to defend the Asuran Megalaser from huge waves of Risen mobs. When the Megalaser fires, it makes Tequatl temporarily vulnerable, at which point players have to push through his bone walls, which leads to the next point. He summons bone walls to protect himself, but everyone can just walk around them. The bone walls need to be an actual obstacle that the horde of players needs to take down. The Risen mobs he spawns could be much higher in number. Right now, you can ignore them, for the most part. I think he should also act similarly to GW’s bone dragons, where anyone close to him is perma-poisoned. That would give supportive players even more of a role in the fight.

Shatterer - Remember the end-of-beta event where players got corrupted? This guy should be able to do that, and players should have a mechanic for curing the corruption. Corrupted players would lose control and their avatars would attack other players until cured. It’s important that the player avatars are AI-controlled while corrupted, so that this does not become PvP, but, make it an actual war! If a player is corrupted for the majority of the fight, they still need credit for the event succeeding, btw. It would be very frustrating if being corrupted cost you any chance at rewards.

Claw of Jormag - Get rid of the ice barricade. It’s a horrible gating mechanic (literally). Get rid of the safe spots on the ledges. His ice waves are good, but they’re predictable. Make it more randomized like the Raving Asura fractal ramp with the bars of electricity. The stronger frostbite debuff is definitely an improvement, as players will have to run in, DPS, and run out to avoid dying. It will also provide a challenge to support players. The ice pillar/bomb golem mechanic should be active through the whole encounter. Since this encounter focuses on getting rid of the dragon’s wings, they should be the DPS focus for the first portion of the fight, to weaken them for the AA cannons. Then, the players can focus on shooting his head and feet.

The biggest improvement you could make to all of these fights would be having the bosses move around as if they’re actually fighting the players. The fact that they stand in one place for so long really detracts from the encounters, and makes it feel like the bosses aren’t alive at all.

Just my 2c. I hope some of it might be useful.

Or, the dominant server could treb from all sides and remove the walls entirely. Or, best of all, they could portal in 5 golems and take any gate down in all of 15-20 seconds, giving the defenders next to no chance to defend.

So, the defenders would need to watch for attacks all along the walls, which they should be doing anyway. If the siege towers were blocked from using portal and waypoints, they’d be more balanced than golems (which can use both), since the defenders would have plenty of time to prevent the towers from getting to the wall.

P2 is about right, honestly. 15-20 min is reasonable for a quick dungeon path, and it has a good mix of mechanics in the various rooms.

For P1…

Slave Driver – Make it so you can’t ignore the effigies. Increase the time it takes for them to respawn, but make it so the Slave Driver is invulnerable while they’re alive. Right now, there is no point to them even spawning.

Bridge Event – Why is this optional? Make it part of the dungeon path, with the main guy as a boss.

Boulder Trap – Make the boulders block teleport skills and force players to learn the mechanic.

Final Boss – ANet ‘fixed’ the crystals in the last update, but they still do next to nothing except with the lowest DPS group setups (I’ve only ever had one group that had issues out-DPS’ing the crystals’ healing, and that was because we realized we were all spec’ed for support). Make the crystals effective enough at healing the boss that you have to break them as they spawn. It’s an interesting mechanic that is generally ignored.

Another possible mechanic for the final boss that I think would be fun: He has a radial shockwave attack that sends a KD projectile toward each player and pet. It would be a lot of fun if the same crystals that heal him could reflect those back at him if you dodged behind them. The projectile should break the crystal when it is reflected.

I think those changes would make P1 more interesting without ruining the path for people.

I see the WvW issue as a valid tactic, however annoying it is. Cheating on the JPs (it is cheating, no matter how you argue that it isn’t) is bypassing the intended path to the reward. However, nerfing portal wouldn’t be my objective.

I actually agree with some of the posts that I suspect were intended to be sarcastic. Character skills should ALL be disabled in jumping puzzles, and they should be replaced with a standard JP skill set (a personal speed buff, maybe a short-duration light source, a heal, and a skill to avoid damage somehow). These JP skills would remain in place until after the player has left the JP entirely (including the exit platform). Therefore, a portal could not be placed at the exit.

I’m really not sure how to fix Obsidian Sanctum and the Borderlands puzzles, as combat is intended to take place. However, it could be something similar to the way GW used to handle the holiday brawls, where each class is given a standard set of skills and the normal skill bar is locked.

Just one non-nerf idea to fix the JP cheating.

Using periods in chat... Opinions?

There is nothing wrong with using periods in chat.

[snip]

But, does a period at the end impart a sense of arrogance? Perhaps to those who don’t do it and feel threatened by someone who uses “proper grammar” online.

I will say that I resist the urge to play Grammar Police with people in chat. Even though poor grammar bothers me, that is what comes across as arrogant. Unfortunately, rather than being seen as helpful/informative, most people react poorly to it, so it’s just not worth the abuse I receive in return.

On the other hand, I have several friends who want to improve their grammar, and have asked me to correct them. It’s nice to see that there are people out there who care about the nit-picky stuff. :P

Help me play better, especially in dungeons

Some basic ideas:

1) Don’t be discouraged. Everyone spends time re-learning their profession when they start doing dungeons, even if they know the encounters from previous characters. Dungeons are a very different experience from open-world PvE, and as you’ve found out, most of them require much more of your attention and skill.

2) Since you mention dying a lot: Do not blindly follow the crowd with gear stat choices. Lots of people talk about running Berserker armor no matter what profession they’re playing, but full sets of DPS armor are not always the optimal choice. Consider what you want to accomplish and choose stats accordingly. My guild has four people who all run Guardians regularly. One uses Knight, one Magi (I think), and two use Cleric stats on their armor. All four of them use slightly different builds to accomplish everything from holding aggro to group healing.

3) Gradually get your exotic gear. This will come from playing dungeons more, but exotics do give an extra edge. Check out what stats the dungeon vendors offer on their gear, and then maybe focus on a dungeon that offers the gear you want, as you’ll have to run it quite a bit to get a full set of six pieces.

4) Also, don’t forget about your trinkets, weapons, and runes, as they are just as important as your armor pieces. Dungeon vendors offer exotic weapons in various stats, just like the armor. Runes are easiest to purchase from the TP, if they’re not craftable. Trinkets are expensive to craft, but you can also get them from fractals and the laurel vendors. These items add a lot to your stats.

4) Traits make a huge difference. Sometimes using defensive and survivability traits can allow you to use DPS stat gear for a hybrid build that does good damage, but will help you avoid being downed/defeated constantly. Elementalists do this a lot with their Water traits, for example.

5) I suggest trying Honor of the Waves path 1 to introduce yourself to dungeon group play. Citadel of Flame paths 1 and 2 are absurdly easy at the moment, but because they’re so easy, they won’t give you much to learn as far as how a group can work together. HotW path 1 is probably the next easiest dungeon path after CoF 1 & 2, and you will start to get a feel for how a group can work together, especially now that the final boss can’t be glitched out anymore.

6) You didn’t mention a guild in your post. Having people you play with regularly makes a huge difference in knowing how your group is going to handle a given encounter. Pick-up-groups (PuGs) are inherently more difficult for anything. Effective communication is more difficult (many guilds use voice chat clients that make communication easy), you don’t know your teammates’ builds and/or play styles, and the players’ expectations may be entirely different (speed run vs casual run). On top of all of that, with a guild group, challenging content can be enjoyable even if you fail a few times at first, depending on the group’s attitude. Players tend to have less patience when playing with people they don’t know.

As a final note, try using Virtue of Justice just after the boss uses one of his big attacks. Many boss tells are spaced out so that the burn animation will have faded before you need to see his next tell. It isn’t always the case, but maybe that’ll help.

Good luck!
