I only read the first few posts but I have to say one small thing:

As a cashier in a retail store in the same state and county as ArenaNet, I do NOT inform my customers that there is a 9.5% sales tax added on to all of their purchases, except some food, at my store. I simply tell them the total of their sale.

To this day, I sometimes have people who are oblivious that there is 9.5% sales tax, and wonder why they are paying more than the item is listed for, and after a few seconds they remember that there’s tax.

It’s not my responsibility to tell each and every customer exactly how much their subtotal, their tax, and their total with tax is, every time. 9.5% is close enough to 10% that people should know how to do some basic math when they are buying things.

It’s kind of the same with the trading post. Now, let me say, yes it would be nice if they made it clearer. When you list an item it would be nice if it said something like “Non-refundable listing fee: 90c. Sales tax: 1s80c. Projected profit: blahblah”
That would be a great feature and they should add it in, but it isn’t necessary and certainly not deceptive. If you think the trading post is deceptive, I challenge you to go to every store you shop at, buy something, and then chew out the cashier and manager and file a formal complain when the cashier didn’t tell you exactly how much your tax was on your purchase. Do it. Stop being a hypocrite.

Good analogy, but this guy goes even farther. He thinks it’s deceptive and against the law!

I included the bolded section to specifically highlight that I knew this was a special case, however I think you are oversimplifying. Because gold can be bought with real world money, it does have a cash value.

If someone spends hundreds of pounds on gems to convert to gold, and Arena Net then take some of that gold away without telling them, then that is pretty off. I’m not saying Arena Net shouldn’t take the 15% (they should), but I see no reason at all to think that they shouldn’t be upfront about it just because we’re talking about a virtual service.

Anet doesn’t care what you do after you convert your gems to gold. You’re free to do whatever the hell you want. If you want to use that gold to sell stuff on the TP, and you’re too clueless enough to not know the fees involved, then that’s the seller’s problem.

Are we going to post gambling laws here when we talk about spending that same gold on the mystic forge?

As for the person that says they only need 50 silver that’s good for you but not all the players would agree. I merch all the drops for my gear and you will need good gear and foods if you plan on advancing to far or you will be a ko farm and paying for repairs 100s times a day.. The game is like most games of this type getting needy for cash.. This is not the only MMO I play and others are like me we have and are seeing the changes that are going on industry wide.

@ the OP: The trading post takes 15% out of every successful transaction. 5% for listing (which you cannot get back and is taken out of pocket: not out of the sale so you can’t list something if you don’t have the coin up front to list it) and 10% at the point of sale. There is no deception when the trading post tells you your listing fee & your projected profit. I don’t think adding a few lines explaining the math is going to accomplish more than what the projected profit already tells you. If someone isn’t going to bother to check the math then they wouldn’t read the text that explained the math. If you are one of the few that picked up on the 10% tax and are curious about why then they have one of the most well maintained game dedicated wikis I have ever seen:

Not listing all fees and charges associated with a sale is commonly referred to by the FTC as a Deceptive Practice, I would go further to quote Washington State and King County (ANet is in King County) Law for its legal definition but it is besides the point. It is something not being listed and made aware to the consumer using a service.

Before this topic spirals out of line with too much debate the fact is and stands they list the posting fee and then take an additional tax/fee with no notice. Which is in many states, including Washington, illegal. That includes if the consumer is unaware, the mere practice is fraudulent in nature.

People are still dumping their investments so I don’t expect a huge increase in price until a few weeks.

On a somewhat related note, I saw some suspicious activity in regards to powerful bloods.

Price was steadly in the low 13s. But twice I saw massive undercut of 1S. Someone was intentionally trying to lower the price.

Lucky enough, I got enough money to buy them all up before any long-term damage was done.

Whatever you see on the TP is world wide, not server wide.

If you wanted to buy one outside of the TP, you’d be risking getting scammed/becoming a scammer.

To be honest, if you’re a casual, you’re not going to be online long enough to power trade.

The most you could do is speculate on items which would increase in value over time. But I doubt you have enough money at that level to make any significant investments

You need to understand the risks and rules involved with trading on the outpost.

You also need to study the market more as to why you think the price will increase. Just cause you think it will isn’t exactly a safe judgment call.

Christmas presents in fact are probably one of the worst investments to make. Not enough profit per item.

Here is my personal observation:

I saw many scales supplied at certain price points.

E.g. lets say there are 900 scales at the price of 8.4s

That is a clear indication of someone dumping all of their investments. Once that entire ‘artificial’ supply is gone, it’s gone from the market (or unless someone bought that to invest as well).

So the price is going to fluctuate over the next few days as we have people dump all their investments. Once that trickles to a halt, we will see a gradual rise in price.

Yes, it is possible:

exploit godskull, subvert the spirit of the game by hitting 80 in a day and farming the first month and a half when there was no DR on loot, exploit snowflake-to-ecto, profit while everyone else has zero way to actually reach that level of gold.

Alternatively make up sour spirited false accusations to help justify your own lack of gold when compared to players who count a spreadsheet and calculator amongst their inventory, and traited mathematics instead of making it a dump stat

I work in applied mathematics, I don’t want to do it to be viable in a GAME , I want to play a WIZARD, not an ACCOUNTANT . When I want to day-trade, I do it with real money.

Then don’t do it. Nobody is forcing you.

It’s my choice if I want to exploit other people’s ignorance or impatience which allows me to profit off of them.

You don’t like a game that doesn’t have an economy? You’re playing the wrong genre.

I have 40g worth of putrid I’ve been holding for a few months now. I bought a ton when it was near vendor price.

It’s pretty much the safest investment you can make with a huge reward.

As you said again, it’s a t5 mat (or t6 perhaps?), and it’s rare quality. So if there suddenly were a huge demand for such an item, the demand rate would far outpace the supply rate.

Why do I think it’ll increase in value? Arenanet has shown that they are willing to make new recipes to adjust for supply. Remember back in release where we had an overabundance of some materials, like chocolate and butter? The same could happen, especially since piles is useless at the moment.

Not a stealth nerf, more of a hot fix.

Scales just went up 2s in the past hour

How is this any different than buying gems to gold so you can purchase the mats for the legendary?

The only things that you can’t buy:
-karma
-world completion
-skillpoints (though you can buy this through paying to level crafting)

So prices peaked at nearly 9s and now they’re hovering at 8s.

The speculation crashed at 9s, but and we’re at a crossroads right now as to whether it’ll go up or down.

I believe we have reached a temporarily equilibrium, as the buyers have stopped buying to speculate, while the sellers are probably selling their excess armored scales for profit.

Perhaps over the next few days, as the excess supply wears down, we will start to see an increased price since the true supply rate (the rate from moldy bags and mobs) will drop from now on.

note, price has shot up 1s in the past few hours

Apparently one of the big reasons why we had the big price drop was due to barrucuda’s dropping them (they were a spawned minion mob like wolves).

As an interest in self disclosure, I have 2000 armored scales I bought when they were back at 8s, so I hope to profit off this when it gets back to the normal level of 22s!.

People want legendaries because they look nice and they make you stand out. When everyone has legendaries then that doesn’t look unique at all. The ‘WOW’ factor is gone.

And then Anet would be forced to make another tier of legendaries, and more people would cry…

I’ve spent 700 hours on this game so far and I have my legendary. It’s humorous when a casual with 200 hours thinks he deserves a legendary just as much as those who actually worked hard and deserved it.

Random tips and tricks (not exploits) that I like to share with people to play smarter and efficiently. Please feel free to share your tips

1.) Going for a precursor through the mystic forge route?
Don’t forge anything other than greatswords. Dusk/Dawn have a high selling price, so if you do end up with one, you can sell it for a ton, buy your other cheap precursor and still have money left to spend. This of course doesn’t apply if you buy your rares on the TP, but crafting them yourself is the cheapest way to go.

2.) Arah Assault
On the second to last stage when clearing Arah, you need to keep the promenade clear of mobs and cap it. As soon as you kill the champion risen giant in the previous stage, you need to get to the promenade stairs quickly so you can stop the eye at the top of the stairs. This will force himself to attack you and will not enter the ring. You do not need to kill him and risk wiping. Just tag him when it’s nearly over. You will still get loot.

3.) Tequatl
He fears frequently, every 1 minute or so. If you are lazy and don’t like walking back all the time, toggle walk. Whenever you are feared, you are feared at a walking pace instead. Also, if you are a ranged player, standing near his sides and behind him is generally the safest spot.

4.) Going for a legendary?
Leave the precursor to be the last item you get and instead invest your money in the other materials – t6, globs and lodestones.

We already know that a new way of acquiring precursors will be introduced (we just don’t know when). But when it is, we know that it will increase the supply to the point of lower prices (don’t give me the excuse that the lost shores didn’t do that, it was a one time supply increase anyways).
People still seem to think that the precursor is the most expensive component, but really it’s not. This current mindset will push the prices of t6, globs and lodestones up since it would give players new found ‘hope’ to completing their legendary. You can avoid that by buying everything now. It’s also a good investment opportunity considering t6 prices are at a low once again and globs prices have stabilized at equilibrium

5.) Claw of Jormag
You don’t need to keep attacking him whenever you get the chance – it’s real easy to get a gold medal for killing him. In the first phase when he is on the hill, you should make the elementals a priority. They can drop many claws as well as lodestones. You won’t get another opportunity to have many elementals packed together. When it’s on the 2nd phase, that is a good time to start beating on him

Also, if Claw is still on the 1st phase and his health drops below 50%, don’t waste your time. His HP always resets back to 50% in the 2nd phase.

6.) Crusader Angaria @ Anchorage
The event is one of three pre-events for Arah Assault. It is also the best event in Orr that everyone should go to when it’s available. This event is currently bugged, which is why it’s so good. You have 8-12 mobs that spawn very frequently (often in 3 second intervals between waves) and the loot is excellent (unlike Halia Corpseflayer). Often I see people finishing up the Dexa collection quest (scrap metal) when all it takes is 1-3 scrap metal collections to get gold. Should I also mention that you can get up to 7 minutes of constant farming?

7.) Anchorage Elemental farm
If you want money, and if you can convince people to work with you, farming Anchorage Assault is one of the most profitable (and deadly) events. The fire elemental farm rate is fast and can drop the most valuable of gems. Of course, the lava fonts are deadly and as such, you need to be ranged. When it fails, the event respawn is roughly 15 minutes.

8.) Halia Corpseflayer
This event pops up as a preevent to Anchorage Assault. Constant waves at a theoretical unlimited timeframe. The event ends when Halia is defeated. I’ve had it run for an hour. This event is not designed for loot – the loot is very bad for some reason. But it is great for getting exp. If you have a character that is not level 80, you need to pop an exp potion and a killstreak potion and head over there and hope it lasts long. Great for exp.

Named/unamed doesn’t matter.

If you want to gamble, I suggest you spend all your karma on Obsidian Shards and make those 10 clover recipes – and HOPE you don’t get clovers.

For a 10 clover recipe, you need 10 skillpoints, 10 shards, 10 globs and 10 coins. That’s roughly 4G per attempt (and the loss of skillpoints hurt)

You can gamble that and get 30-40 T6 mats or +10 lodestones.

Let’s say you get 30 elaborate totems at 22s. That’s 6.6g, 2g profit

Or 10 Charged Lodestones at 3g each. 30G, or 26G profit.

But it’s a gamble, so you’ll sometimes get 40 cured hardened leather and lose a ton.

Many people here seem to forget that you can get skill points from the world exploration, not just by grinding.

If skill points were worth 1g each at one point, then it would be exploited to the point that someone would keep creating/deleting a new character after collecting those first few easily attainable skill points in the early zones.

Small sample size and bad luck.

I’ve got a total of 5 stacks over probably 700-800 hours of gameplay.

It’s because candy corn is needed to make one of the cheaper lvl 80 exotic accessories, which in turn can be converted into commendations, which in turn convert into black lion keys

People are stocking up on keys to prepare for the new loot table for the chests.

I already have 50 keys ready, all bought through commendations.

When you consider the many level 80s who are not concerned with a legendary, they have a ton. It’s also relatively easy to get.

When you look at an item like the Mystic Coin, which is limited to once per day, and is used in many recipes ranging from 50 to 100 coins, it would be far lower in price.

The ‘safest’ solution to ‘black market’ dealing is to get a 3rd party, or a middleman.

Of course, the biggest issue is getting someone who both sides trust.

You may consider contacting a well-known GW2 player, like Dulfy, or perhaps some of the more famous GW2 players who stream the game exclusively. Of course, you still need to screenshot the agreements.

That’s a pretty steep price, especially when you’re saving karma.

It could be speculation. We saw this with globs of ecto. It kept rising everyday up until 38s. Then the market crashed and it’s down to the correct market price.
