Vol: I would love to pay for it. I want to pay for the dye I want. I do not want to pay for an RNG CHANCE at a dye I do not want. Why does it have to contain 19 common dyes that are worthless and not new at all?

I know the response will be “Buy gems and convert to gold” this is a terrible solution. I am willing to pay and have paid IRL cash for items in the gem store, but RNG is out.

This game is not alt friendly, it is not collector friendly. One of the original arguments put forth by arena net for why dyes are not account wide is they wanted your characters to have some individuality. The truth is, it’s a money grab. Its a good money grab. Once they realized how well RNG works in their favor it was only a matter of time before they added that feature to dyes and anything else they can fit it in.

This isn’t a revelation by any means but I’ll continue with each RNG dye pack to voice my opinion on the matter and hope they change it. (I know they probably won’t)

People have been asking this since release. I too, would like it. But I understand why Anet does it. It’s this ‘gambling’ feature that nets them a lot of money. They’ve been doing this forever, so it leads me to believe that they would make more money overall than selling it outright.

If they were to sell it directly, they would have to price it so that they would make more money, considering these factors:

1.) The $ lost from individuals who were willing to gamble as much as possible to get the dye they wanted
2.) The $ gained from individuals who would not have bought the item otherwise if it were based on gambling

Another thing to factor is this – if Anet were to commit to selling directly, and the financial results are not appealing, it will be very, very difficult to revert back to gambling. The PR disaster that would follow would not be appealing. If Anet is selling their items well enough right now, it’s not worth the risk to find out if they can make more money by selling directly.

A somewhat comparable example is this. Let’s say I’m selling Quaggan plushies for $40 and I profit off of each plushie by 100% (so I pocket all $40).

If I sell 1000 units for $40, I make $40,000. But then I start to get greedy, and I think that I can make even more money through volume alone. I drop my price to $20. Now my units sold will definitely increase. But it can increase well enough to make me better off or it can increase too little to make me worse off.

If I sell 2100 units @ $20, I make more money. But I only sell 1500 units now, I lose money.
Now can I go back to the customer and say, “sorry guys, but the price will go back up to $40”. It’s not exactly a popular decision. Sure, you can do these type of price changes with timed sales, but if we were to talk about Anet’s sales, you can’t really do that.

They can’t say, “Oh, for this month only, we will be selling dyes directly to you rather than gambling!”

They tried it with Wintersday skins, and I’m sure the financials with that were not pleasing since we haven’t had a promotion like that since then.

Cosmetics and novelty drive this game financially. I have no problem having these time-limited dyes and promotions.

You and everyone else should have expected stuff like this before the game was launched. Dyes are not pay 2 win. They are cosmetic.

Anet needs to make their money somehow, and if you really, really want that specific shade of dye, you will have to pay for it.

Gold can come into the game in 2 ways

  1. Thru normal progression of the game. This would be an infinite supply of constantly stamped coin as everyone is making money if they do almost anything out in the open world
  2. Buying Gems with Cash and converting to gold

No. 2 is wrong because the gold you get for your gems was put up there by a player that earned it doing No. 1.

If you could find a source for that, it would be appreciated, because while it seems the intuitive assumption, the gem exchange just isn’t a symmetrical player-to-player market like most of the TP is. For the easiest example of this in action, imagine at the start of the game, when the first player tries to buy gold/gems. There’s no way to put up an order for them for someone else to fill, so they had to have their purchase filled from the imaginary coffers of the Black Lion Trading Company itself. While currency exchanges made do have an effect on the rate of exchange, it’s not a one-to-one exchange.

I would think that Redenaz would be correct.

  • On day one, minute one, you could have gold either thru your first minute of adventuring or paying cash for gems and trading for gold. As gold exists in a hypothetically infinite supply.
  • Gems on the other hand at that moment in time could Only exist thru cash purchases as there was no way to Earn Gems in the game.

by a small technicality you are wrong on your second point gems can be earned in game through achievement chests, I believe at a rate of 400gems per 5000 achievement points, not great but still and option.

Achievement rewards were not there at release, so at that point in time gems from Massive Achievement boxes were not possible.

In any case, you shouldn’t stop coming to the forums completely. You’re one of the more respected players with these economic discussions.

I’ll try when anything major happens (like new legendaries).

I’m playing over in BF4 and it’s hard for me to justify logging in now. I don’t even do dailies anymore, and that’s a dangerous threshold I’ve crossed!

Who knows, maybe when my gossamer investments go up and I sell it off, I’ll go on a gambling spree and try to make more gold, and hold a community 50/50 draw.

I wanted to get a great skin for a weapon that I used all the time – staff for guardian. So I made Bifrost in November.

After seeing how fabulous I look, I then made it my goal to become the richest, most exuberant player on my server at that time (Yaks Bend). A Liberace, if you will.

So I made Sunrise in December. Was immediately satisfied with my Bifrost/Sunrise combo since I’m a guardian and I would use GS/Staff all the time. My dye make-up looked fabulous.

But I felt like I was missing something – the most underrated legendary in the game – FSP.

So I made FSP in January. But then I realized that since I have 3 legendaries, why stop there? I have to go all the way and get all the legendary weapons that I would use within reason on my guardian.

At this point Anet started to nerf farming so it became much harder to make money. So I resorted to speculation/investing heavily on the TP.

Then around August, when they made the updated legendary changes, I decided to cash out all my assets worth +4000G and made Metereologicus and Twilight (which led to Eternity).

So now at this point I have a tricked out guardian with 5 legendaries and multiple exotic sets.

I’m not sure if I ever did reach my goal of wealthiest player on Yaks Bend, but I did transfer to SoR about 3 months ago and I got nothing on the guy with +11 legendaries, but I think I was at least in top 5 on Yaks.

Throughout my GW2 lifetime I also have set and (nearly) met many goals:
-Make all 5 races to 80
-Make all classes to 80 (only missing necro)
-Reach WvW rank 230 (to get Guard Leech & Fortitude)
-Reach 10K AP

I feel like I have won the game after setting and meeting these difficult goals. I have spent so much money and time on this game, I do not have any regrets taking a leave from GW2. After all, BF4 is coming out tomorrow and I cannot wait to destroy some noobs.

A few points on Living World

1.) It would be really nice if the Living World made more, discernable impacts on the world – specifically the environment.

Remember the Karka invasion into LA, as the lighthouse got demolished? Or the settlements during our 2nd go-around with Southsun? Those were awesome and I think it truly shows a Living World that changes each patch.

2.) Introduce ways to summarize or ‘revisit’ Living Story chapters.

You don’t have to make an instance or a fancy cinematic since those take a lot of time – but you can include in-depth NPC dialogue that explains what happened. For example, for the Living Story episode that involved the Aetherblade jumping puzzle, you could have an NPC in a nearby town explain what had happened here months ago and the impact the Aetherblade have made on the nearby towns.

If you could even involve some dynamic events with these ‘summaries’, all the better. For example, design an escort/infiltration mission into the pirate ship to retrieve x items or rescue Y person. The dialogue could also hint back to the Living Story or the reasoning of the event can be tied to it.

It seems that nearly every bracket in the game ends up with having a lopsided result. With the exception of NA T1, each bracket has 1 distinct winner and the match-up can easily be decided by the end of the weekend.

One of the major reasons why you have these huge point spreads is that one server has much better coverage than the others.

For example, for arguments sake, let’s say Sos, Mag and TC all have even numbers during NA prime. You could theoretically have a close, even match-up during this time. However, SoS and Mag may have zero presence during Oceanic, while TC may have 1 or 2 oceanic guilds. These 1-2 oceanic guilds alone can easily clear out all of WvW without contest and contribute more to PPT by PvDooring than the close, awesome fights that occured during NA prime.

This stinks because all the hard work and stressful fights engaged by NA guilds will easily be wiped clean by the effortless zerg train of Oceanic. It’s not exactly a worthy rewarding system.

So how exactly can we prevent this? I haven’t given too much thought about this and it’s implications, so I invite others to critique.

How about we implement a system that reduces the amount of points gained by each server in WvW in proportion to the current WvW population on the map?

For example, during low population levels, points are worth less and during high population levels, points are worth more.

What this will result in is smaller point spreads being gained when one server completely overwhelms the other two due to coverage, while at the same time, not punishing the progression rewards for players in these time zones.

TLDR: Adjust PPT to be higher/lower depending on total WvW population

To those SoR saying we will beat BG in the upcoming weeks, I’d be careful about that. There will be another server present, and even though they won’t be a threat to either of us alone, they could potentially play the kingmaker each match-up.

As for JQ, prior to the late in the week double team vs. them, it was mostly posts about good fights, and other basically non-confrontational posts. Now, it’s filled with a lot more vitriol.

People need to chill out.

The only 3rd-ring server that would have a chance at playing a pivotal role would be TC. The other servers will get destroyed.

I think its about time to congratulate BG on their win and SoR on their runner up. The last matchup the three of us had together was probably one of the best wvw weeks I’ve ever been a part of because it was everyone hitting everyone and there was always a fight to be had. I can’t say this week has been all that fun though. I welcome 2v1 fights, but when the other two servers don’t really have to worry about being backdoored or defending their stuff from a server while they attack the 3rd server, it kinda removes the competition aspect and takes a bunch of the fun out of it. Though I do take it as a huge compliment that JQ has to be hit so hard all weekend and then again last night through now to keep us down.

So I tip my hat to you all, hopefully next time we fight in 6 weeks we can get a real competition going.

Compliment? It’s not a compliment, only a way to combat an obviously weak schedule for JQ. This is our way of making sure you don’t coast your way to 1st.

Just wait for the match-ups where you have to face off BG and SoR alone.

There’s nothing wrong with 2v1. It’s natural and expected.

My only issue is if you decide to 2v1 and it’s to the detriment of 2/3 servers.

JQ and BG deciding to team up against SoR does nothing for BG but guarantee their win in week 1. But that also pushes up JQ to a guaranteed 2nd place finish at a minimum.

So instead of mindlessly 2v1, BG, ask yourself. Do you want to win the battle and lose the war?

What’s funny is yesterday’s obvious coordinated 2 v 1 against SoR may end up biting BG in the butt. JQ has enough time to overtake SoR and one big push by JQ during peak times can put them at the top, which pretty much wins the league for JQ.

I understand BG wants to keep SoR from beating them in week 1, but the priority should be keeping JQ in 3rd place. BG helping JQ get to 2nd doesn’t help BG at all.

edit: Meanwhile JQ’s priority should be taking PPT away from whoever is in the lead

Enough with the 2v1 bickering, it has happened to all three servers this week; no single server can proclaim innocence in this regard.

See there you are wrong. SOR wasn’t 2v1. JQ was 2v1 on JQBL and SOR was 2v1 on SORBL.

What you see now is a formal 2v1. I have no problem with it, if you want to fight that way so be it but don’t pretend you are having great fights. You are winning a 2v1 fight with all the honor afforded such a fight so just lower your gaze and be quiet about it.

SoR was 2v1’d by JQ/BG last night on JQBL. Defended Bay for at least 5 hours.

Are the holiday events reserved only for level capped players?

Holiday events are not reserved, since the players are auto up-leveled to 80.

However, certain living story events/additions are for certain levels, such as the previous Living Story meta which included a lvl 80 dungeon.

The good thing though is that these events are moving towards being permanent, so you can do them once you reach the appropriate level.

Yes, the game is still alive. Just make sure you also join the heavier population servers.

You won’t notice many people in the lower zones but there are plenty of people in the living world maps, temple events and towns.

Warrior is a good choice since it’s still one of the top classes of the game. You could go for a Mesmer if you like complexity or a ranger if you want to be kitten upon by other players.

You gotta admit, at the end of the day this week has been pretty awesome so far…. all three servers are neck in neck for first place! IMO one of the more fun weeks in WvW in a long time, even with queue issues.

It’s a great match-up but horrible gameplay.

I must wonder where the score would be at if WvW had no skill lag.

I would actually be 100% for that if we could pull it off.

This is what I had from earlier in the page before I got demoralized by the fact that I messed up SoS’s matches and didn’t want to do those again…

JQ    3 1 1 1 2 2 1 = 27
SoR  2 1 2 1 1 1 3 = 27
BG    1 2 1 3 1 1 2 = 27

It requires BG to throw the 4th week match, which is impossible naturally, but could be done because its Maguuma (they will definitely push as hard as they can). We 3 would all get first. I really want SoS and Mags to tie for 3rd as well, but it’s such a pain to plan without too many thrown matches (shooting for none), and I don’t think its possible to get one of them to tie with TC.

No one in the majority is going to throw the match just to ‘stick it to anet’s face"

Go look at how difficult it was for some guilds to throw matches to get into leagues.

OK well..

1.) How do we establish the difference between a WvW player and a PvE player?
2.) What is stopping a PvE player from masquerading as a WvW player to get priority?
3.) How exactly is this system going to encourage new players to get involved in WvW?

1) Any thing that involves the player to have spent time in WvW. World rank? Achievements? total time spent in WvW. I bet anet could dig up approximate figures on this.
2) Redundant due to answer 1. Said PvE player would have had to spend enough time in WvW to out rank WvW players. At that point the person would be considered a WvW player.
3) For high population server, it wouldn’t. But to be frank we aren’t looking to gain new players in masses. The servers and time zones that need and want new players probably won’t be effected by queues like T1 (or high population servers) thus rank priority would not effect them as much.

Also it may be another system to try and force players to lower population servers. If you want to WvW and not only are queues bad but your low ranked, you might be more inclined to move to a different server.

I’m not saying I’m all for this but if this way to be implemented, this is how i would see it.

1.) That will create a perpetual problem. “I want to WvW to gain ranks/AP so that I get higher queue priority..but I can’t even get in because other people who are ahead in ranks/AP are gaining it at a faster pace!”
2.) Same as above. A fresh PvE player will never outrank a seasoned WvW player since he’ll be stuck in queue.
3.) You cannot think with that mentality, especially when you consider Anet’s perspective. It’s bad business and common sense to discourage new players.

1st: That’s an easy one. The game could simply record the time a player spends in PvE and WvW. Spawn and Cities are excluded from this. Maybe it could also count how many events are done in PvE and WvW. It then calculates how much percentage of your time you spend doing what. Some1 like me would get almost 100% WvW time. A PvE achievment hunter might get like 90% PvE time and 10% WvW time (just an example), giving him a low WvW queue priority.
2nd: You have to actually spend time playing WvW. Each time you spend playing PvE it lowers your percentage of WvW time.
3rd: It simply doesn’t. That’s not the aim. The aim is to give the WvW players their game mode back. I already admited the problem with players, who want to transition from PvE to WvW. But a completely new player, who didn’t spend time in any game mode, would have an equal percentage of PvE, PvP and WvW time by default. Please note that the whole queue problem should be solved with the Edge of the Mist map. Until then this system could help to get the WvW dedicated players back into WvW.

1.) That would result in players who want to WvW get discouraged from playing PvE. Why would Anet want to do that? People would then start to track the time spent per activity, which isn’t really the spirit of the game.
2.) Same as above
3.) I understand that’s the aim of queue priority but that interferes with the WvW game mode. WvW isn’t exclusive to a certain number of players.

Hello - I'm a PvE Player.

I think a lot of the reasons why PvE players find WvW intimidating or boring is that they immediately go into a BL or WvW and they get no direction.

There is no fun when you’re on a BL and there is zero coordination. You may have a commander on the map, but sometimes that commander is a kitten or sometimes they don’t relay their commands on map chat (since it’s inefficient)

The WvW experience is a totally different one if you use voice communication. It’s even better when you run with a very well coordinated guild.

Whenever I WvW I do not go in without voice comms and I almost always try to stick with the competent guilds.

Just from watching the amount of AP u have we can tell you’re not a wvw regular.

I have 5300 something and i only wvw

grats I guess on the achievements, though I don’t understand why you would want them if you don’t play wvw (I couldn’t care less about the pve titles and achievements either), but to each their own.

I have only 6 of the 15 completed so far.

I have 10.5k achievements points and I would consider myself a WvW regular. Overall I think I’ve taken no more than 5 months off from WvW since release and I’m at 4/5 tier for WvW killer.

Remember many of the achievement points are based off of dailies.

Weekly and Final Season 1 Scores

Even though we are still in the first week of season 1, i was wondering, if the scoring system, that will determine the overall winner could be handled better.

For clarification, this is how the scores work:

“1st place in each matchup will gain the world 5 points, 2nd place 3 points, and 3rd place 1 point. At the conclusion of the season, the worlds will be ranked in order of the total number of points they’ve acquired.”

So the scoring system only takes into account, if you are 1st, 2nd or 3rd after each weeks matchup.

In the past, many matches have been decided by Tuesday or Wednesday and after that, scores lopsided because the winning server had more people logging in and the loosing server had less and less people logging in.

So why not add the Final Score of each server every week and at the end of Season 1 determine the overall Winner by their accumulated match points and not by the amount of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places your server got?

That way it would still give players of the losing server an incentive to play competitive on Thursday/Friday because in the end it will make a difference for the overall score, if they lose by 10k points or 50k points.

Because that would award the servers that won lopsided match-ups.

If we used that system, I’m confident BG/SoR/JQ would not even touch the top 3.

Yeah oops, sorry, I meant “guaranteed to win this league”. there was a reddit post that talked about the math of this match-up and made some assumptions, concluding that JQ was guaranteed to win it all from the beginning.

It’s no different than the guy who spends an extra $60,000 to buy a luxury sportscar over a family sedan.

Point is, different people have different disposable income for different tastes.
