A lot of misconceptions in this thread so far, and people seem to keep ignoring that watchwork sprockets themselves are not the issue.
Either way, I think the controversial nature of this topic is enough to show Anet that there is a lot of interest in this. The lack of response so far, however, is discouraging.
Please keep it civilized to prevent this thread from being locked.
In response to questions…
1.) I do not think putting limits on words of posts would be wise. This is a discussion after all, and sometimes ideas and critiques cannot be summarized in a few lines or paragraphs. Sometimes, detailed examples or explanations are needed to convey a complex point. Of course, this differs among people. I guess the overall suggestion is to keep posts clear and concise, and if needed, provide an example to supplement your point.
2.)
By votes (not sure how we can implement a polling system since it’s not allowed here).
When questions are managed by the panel, it leads to bias. You end up with questions that many people may not have been wondering, while the real questions that the community wishes to be answered (that have not been answered previously) end up being ignored (Such as my quest to get a response on why we still have DR in this game)
On the flip side, minority topics which may really interest certain parties will never see the light of day. For example, I’m sure Living Story/WvW/PvE trump most people’s minds on these forums. But topics such as API development/Lore will never reach the top of polls.
I think instead of having an either/or, we have an alternation of both. I.e. CDI 1 will be voted upon by the community, while CDI 2 will be pushed by Anet, and back and forth.
Maybe there is a reason the kittenpit is empty. Maybe she use to ride on the arms of the golums her father built…
She actually goes in the golem at the start of Mari. There is a cool animation of it.

I don’t think the problem is the addition of hardcore content. It’s hardcore content put in causal areas, but causal players cannot complete it. The new wurm event is a good example.
How many times have servers beaten the wurm in the last week, since it’s release? Once? Twice? Out 164 possibilities between the European and NA servers….I know a lot of hard core players who no longer bother and hate the event all together.
I didn’t know, as a hardcore player, that I wasn’t allowed to do content in ‘casual areas’.
Curious to hear what maps you consider ‘hardcore’
This will be a gameplay designer/programmer’s nightmare. There are way too many variables to consider.
I’m sorry, but you did nothing. Trahearne did everything. They even let him keep the Legendary Greatsword, Caladbog.
And what did you get? A measley Pact Victory Token.
Nope we still have fun =) Morale is still an all time high!
In that regard I’d like to thank the commanders. They’re always really encouraging and friendly. While we all might be frustrated after a failed attempt, they don’t let it get to them, which really helps the overall moral of everyone else. Also, they’re pretty cool and fun to talk to during downtime between attempts. I ran the wurm while in Jade Quarry and Blackgate TS, and the atmosphere was nowhere near as warming. They complain when stuff didn’t go well and they placed the blame squarely on the PUGs who “don’t understand the mechanics” (despite not having even attempted to explain any of the mechanics). Perhaps that was a one off time when everyone was tired and frustrated, but I gotta say, rolling with TTS really makes this fight (and all the waiting) significantly more enjoyable.
Maybe it’s because you’re not on voice coms? There is always a quick explanation before the Vigil departs.
Im predicting that there will either be
1.) A PvE EOTM instance and a WvW EOTM instance
or
2.) a PvE only EOTM instance for the next 2-4 weeks, and a WvW EOTM release later in March.
Dang it, boo haha. I am hoping that Anet would be crazy enough to mix in the two. Looking forward to hunt glass-canon PvE build players there.
I think Anet would be crazy to include both in the same map, but hey, anything is possible.
Why can’t we have both? Because the casual fanbase won’t let it.
Hardcore players have the ability to do anything. They can do everything from wurm to FE. You don’t hear many complaints from them.
But you hear tons of complaints from the casuals who seem like they are entitled to doing everything and anything in this game on their own terms.
Legendary? I want it in a week.
Ascended? I want it in a day.
Crafting? Why must I be forced to spend money crafting?
Hard content? How come it’s not designed for me so I can beat it on first try?
so on and so forth
I think casual players just need to admit to themselves that the game will not revolve only around them and that they need to adjust their expectations on what they can do. You’re not going to get a legendary anytime soon if you play 1 hour a week. You’re not going to kill the wurm or karka if you refuse dodge. You’re not going to afford The Emperor title by making 20s a day

If Anet came out with a redesigned molten pick that had a 20% chance of Azurite Crystal (3 s worth now), I’m sure people would be up in arms.
Again, this isn’t about sprockets, it’s about the extra items you get themselves, and the lack of alternative picks that give you the same chance.
I remember a WvW guild on SoR that would kill rangers on sight. I think it was Aco/ward. Was pretty hilarious seeing 20 people chase a single ranger in a group of 5.
Wow. And I thought the Thaumanova Reactor fractal was a slap in the face. We waited months for that fractal; some of use even based our vote on that fractal. One of the developers teased something to the effect of “I wonder what happens when Chaos Magic mixes with the Mists.” The possibilities stemming from that were endless. And instead we got Scarlet. Again. But this…this takes the cake. I’m not even into WvW and I find this insulting. I say again…wow.
I’m insulted that you find new content insulting
I’m not seeing the pay to win element here. Where is the gameplay advantage from sprockets? How would this be any different from saying using real money to buy gems to make gold to buy sprockets? This is just an extra step in the process.
Also, we can get sprockets from the current meta and boss rewards. There is nothing to say watchwork drops aren’t permanent as we don’t know if the watchwork mobs are staying around post-season LS.
We can ignore the sprockets themselves and replace them with hypothetical item X.
This is the only mine pick which gives you a 20% chance of getting item X. There is no other pick there.
And as previously mentioned, this is different than ‘buying’ gold through gem sales because the gold you bought is used to buy items that can be acquired through other means, such as tokens and in game gold.
The key point here is alternative use. If there are no alternative ways (across mining picks) to get item X then it’s P2W.
Why ignore sprockets and replace tho? There is nothing to say this something that will always happen. And even it it happened for say gold, or mithril, well there are other ways to gain those – eg salvaging, mining, so that would be even less pay to win.
If someone is buying the pick for the sprocket gain, they are worse off since they could buy thousands with the gem conversion. I still can’t see the gameplay advantage here that makes it pay 2 win. If the pick gave an item which was exclusive and made an item which made you stronger…then we are in p2w territory.
Also sprockets drop from Invasions. And there’s nothing to say they wont drop if these mobs are also in EOTM as well.
I removed sprockets out of the equation because the fact that they are sprockets themselves isn’t too important. It could be orbs, crystals, spores, whatever.
Th issue I have specifically is that there is no other alternative to get these items with other picks.
Now if we were to give consideration of sprockets, you do not know the value of these in the near future. Mari will be gone, invasions could very well be gone (yes they said they were permanent but how would that fit with LS moving forward?). So the only way to get sprockets is to mine them in your instance or have this pick.
Except that you can convert gold to gems.
And you can use that gold to buy the items from the TP.
We’re not thinking at the same level here:
Across mining picks, there are zero alternatives to get the 20% chance at item X. OF course you can convert your gold to gems but that’s not the argument here
And I fogot to mention – unlike the novelty of gem store skins, this pick is not novelty. It directly gives you something of value that other picks do not.
Not sure how much scaling happens but if you coordinate with everyone on the platform, you can work together to remove stacks of defiant.
The key point here is alternative use. If there are no alternative ways (across mining picks) to get item X then it’s P2W.
By this logic, all current shop skins are P2W because they can’t be obtained elsewhere.
P2W means paying to be at an advantage, not paying to get something different.
Except that you can convert gold to gems.

Don’t forget, the new pick is account bound as well. the older picks are not
The older picks were later changed to account bound. You just need to manually do it yourself through a vendor.
I don’t get it, links to you bragging and a useless skill icon ?
Why do you think I can afford all that? Because of that icon
I dont’ know. It’s much easier if you can tell us what you are griniding instead.
I presume it is something to do with cloth. I havn’t play in a few month. So don’t know what the next “grinding spot” is.
There are cloth farming spots in the game that I have tried, and they are OK, but some of them are questionable.
The places (and tools/methods) I use to farm are secrets since they will get nerfed by Anet. And it’s all legitimate, 100% exploit free.
edit: don’t bother PM’ing, I won’t tell anyone.

You do realize you can already buy 5 trillion sprocket by simply converting gem to gold right?
I fail to see how everyone suddenly get shocked they are paying for advantage.
Right now watchwork sprockets are +35c each.
Wouldn’t you be annoyed if anet offered a pick that offered a 20% chance at 4 chances on a node rather than 3? Cause that’s what is happening if you were to use this on a copper or mithril node. There is no telling the value of sprockets 6 months from now, either.
So you are annoyed by that and not people can buy gold already?
I’m already annoyed. They dont’ need to introduce a new advantage mining pick for me to be annoyed.
Not sure why you want to go that route, but OK.
People can legitimately buy gold, yes, but what can they do with it that makes them better than people who don’t? Everything in this game can be accessed by normal players.
You can ‘buy’ gold and get a legendary, or you can make it.
You can ‘buy’ gold and get exotics, or you can get it through karma/game gold/other
The difference with this pick is that there is no other alternative in game to get it (strictly speaking across mining picks). No other mining pick in game so far can give a 20% chance at sprockets. This one does. That’s not good.
I don’t get it, links to you bragging and a useless skill icon ?

Guys I think it’s pretty obvious that this EOTM version will be for LS alone, and it will be temporary. The WvW EOTM version may be coming as well in this update.
Don’t expect WvW players to be fighting alongside PvE in this update.

Exactly like I thought. Patch 1 2 and 3 will, despite being called “big patches”, still be regular LS patches maybe even smaller considering that they don’t add any features.
What a shame :/
How is adding a whole new map small?
A whole new map full with new features no less. And what about the first patch that added two world bosses, both with completely new mechanics?
Unless anet comes up with a dozen maps and a few classes in EVERY patch, some people will never be content.

I’m glad to see the concordance on this topic. I have not seen a single defender of this, and that’s a plus. As a person with several unlimited tools, I love these items. But now I certainly feel obligated to buy this in order to stay ahead. I don’t know. It kind of sucks.
This is why I made this thread. If there is enough vocal opinion on this (and I strongly believe there will be), then I sincerely hope Anet takes the route of Flamekissed armor and make changes.
I agree, this is something that I think a lot of flippers take advantage of. If I weren’t so impatient I would do it too, since there’s nothing wrong with it.
Happens a lot with high-velocity commodities with significant price spreads. Players are even more susceptible if they do not know the price of the item.
If you haven’t noticed, a new infinite mining pick has been released which also provides a 20% chance of sprockets.
I have absolutely no problem with infinite tools. They are convenience.
But a chance to get a material that cannot be gathered by other tools? This is P2W.
When scarlet is gone, we more than likely will not be able to get sprockets anymore outside of two sources – the node in your instance and these picks.
It doesn’t matter that sprockets may not have as high value, and that 20% is still low. It sets a dangerous precedent, however, of introducing unique, non-vanity features to future items to generate sales.
Seriously Anet, take this from your no.1 fanboy – this is not cool.
The ‘best’ compromise is to provide older unlimited tools with a similar bonus ore. But personally I would prefer if there were no bonuses at all. Just leave the animation there and sell it for 1000 gems.
edit1: as another mentioned, the other best compromise is to include other temporary picks with the 20% chance, i.e. orichalcum pick with 20% chance at watchwork
(edited by Vol.7601)
Neither. See sig.
I have to agree here. Usually I defend Anet against the unreasonable fanbase, but I think this new pick is enroaching on P2W territory. It doesn’t matter that the sprockets are cheap, but the fact that it does give you extra items over your standard pick is not good.
Unlimited picks are convenience, which is fine. Unlimited picks which give out extra loot which is not accessable by normal picks is not.
I don’t see why it should. Legendary mobs are often no different in difficulty than some champs. Heck, even the Champ Risen Nobles and Purifiers are to be feared.
Sadly i dont got enough space to roll a guardian and a warrior and i prefer not to delete a lvl 80 :O
Roll a guardian, then farm the gold to buy a character slot to get your warrior if you choose). But if you’re like me, I would make a 2nd guardian
Every single player should have at least 1 guardian on their account and use it a gold farmer.
Do you mean Taimi herself, or a Mini Golem with a Mini Taimi? ;o
So has Deso killed it again yet? Or are people flocking to guest over there and ruin the whole fight?
After everything i have read now i feeling like Guardian mainly supporting and can only be zerker if going dmg. I feeling like the warrior would be a better choice it got so many different builds condi and zerk and warriors are more like dmg dealer.
Am i correct?
How about this.
Roll a guardian, get to 80 and then farm 100G in a day.
If you hate guardian by then, you can afford to level craft a warrior
I like how you neglect the fact that APB had to be relaunched because the previous company was in financial distress, let alone APB has pretty poor reviews.
But hey, if you want a game strictly for character customization, knock yourself out.
Didn’t that already happen almost 2 weeks ago? On the 17th of January?
If anything, we will be getting a text preview from Colin this month in regards to what is in store for the next 6 months.
Hey I discussed this idea last week, stop stealing my ideas :P
As I mentioned back then, we could use a dragon or a rocket dolyak.
Either way, it would be a gemstore item.
I just don’t understand why Warden II is so difficult for some people to beat. It is a fairly simple mechanic, run him over his mines when he is spinning, but people just can’t seem to get it down. Before anyone says that some people don’t know what to do yet I don’t accept that as an answer for any of the Wardens, and this is why. Not only are the instructions on how to defeat the Wardens written under their health bars you also have resources like the wiki to get the info you need, and if all of that somehow goes over your head you have about 15 different people telling you how to beat the boss in /map chat. Maybe it’s the server I’m on, maybe people are really just that inept at some things, maybe it really is that hard I just get lucky every time I run the boss and beat it, or maybe people just don’t care. Someone please tell me why simple concepts are beyond some people who attend this event and why we have to fail because of their ignorance on the boss fight. I’m honestly stumped.
Not everyone is analytical or attentive enough to notice the boss mechanics are clearly detailed under the nameplate. A lot of casual players seem to have the ‘SMASHBUTTONZ’ mindset and probably just afk as soon as they enter the platform..
Also doesn’t help that you have rangers who are clueless on putting their pets to passive.
Guardian.!
GUARDIANGUARDIANGUARDIANGUARDIAN
If you are an all-around player, focusing on PvE and WvW I would 100% pick Guardian.
But the biggest bonus for guardian over every other class is their ability to make money. How? Look at my sig.
The main issue with the Marionette is a spawn timer with 2 hours, combined with requirements that people execute the event. If Lliadri the Concealing Dark was on a 2 hour spawn window, the amount of people who actually would have been able to complete it would have been next to none. The bosses in the rings can one shot you. You can’t learn about what can one shot you without being one shot. Not only that, but you also need teamwork in many of them. A holo-deck mode, or practice, where people could Learn on something faster than a 2 hour window would help tremendously with this.
I think only two of the platforms have bosses with one shot mechanics that are easy to avoid. Don’t stand in red circles and you won’t die.. most the deaths I see on the platforms are people who don’t know how to dodge or move out of the obvious. This boss is downed most rounds on JQ server anyway and I suspect many others. Its not a hard fight, in fact its quite easy requiring minimal team effort other than maybe the kiting the champ over mines or separating players into 25 in each lane. Other than that its mostly kill whats in front of you, don’t stand in the red, win.
The only one that comes close to a one-shot mechanic I would say is the 3rd regulator – the one that launches bombs.
If you stand close to one bomb it will take you to 50%. You have more than enough time to get out of range but if you stand in the range of two consecutive bombs then yeah you will get downed.
1.) You will not get new minis, you get the same Queen Jennah mini
2.) Because the birthday is based on character, not account. That’s the way Anet designed it. It’s impossible for Anet to design a system based on account. How would they base it? On first log-in? On purchase?
3.) If you have played since August 2012, I really don’t know why you would want to delete all you characters just for a server transfer. Server transfers are really meant for WvW-oriented players, or players who are too inconvenienced to guest. I think it’s a waste at throwing away all the hard work you’ve done since release.

I disagree. These bosses are incredibly easy, except for the 4th regulator which requires a bit more dodging and situational awareness.
If every new player read the champ descriptions under the nameplate, they would get an idea.
“Can only be attacked from behind” Well I guess it means what it means!
“Invulnerable while spinning, places mines” Hmm well how to make it vulnerable? run over mines!
“Launches bombs” Dodge them!
It’s really not that hard.
Finally, a well-written constructive post. Bravo.
On your note regarding the inconsistent damage during wurm burn phases – that is a bug, and it’s one that is really discouraging people from attempting it.
edit: Also regarding your note on not getting achievements for Mari. You really have to dodge the attacks. If you are a guardian, aegis won’t help you get the achievement even though it blocks a hit.
This is exactly why I told people emphatically not to waste karma. Even yet people are touting ‘converting karma to gold’ lately.
I have no sympathy for people who blew all their millions of karma on those Orr boxes just for a chance to get lodestones.
I do have sympathy, however, for newer players.
Three of the most common reasons why marionette fails
-Rangers who refuse to put their pet on passive
-Casual/bad players thinkings they can just afk zerg champs and not read mechanics
-Platforms end up with <3 players.
That’s a lot of map completions…
I think this is extremely relevant now:
