We play PvP quite often, actually. Some of us are more “casual,” while others are more hardcore. Some of the devs have even competed at the high level in various games before joining the team. We experiment with new builds and countering the meta as well.
We won’t compete in the game because that is not fair to the players. We do however play rated matches occasionally (usually during our Friday play sessions). If you want to for-sure catch us in game, come play from 5-6pm PST on Fridays. Many of us play outside that time as well, though at random times and days.
Most of us are hooked up to the Shoutcast Notifier and will keep an eye on high rated matches to see how the meta is up top as well.
We do also have systems to tell us what things are run the most/least, etc.
So yeah, all those things and more.
With all those systems and tools, how come you cant come up with an actual decent “Balance” Patch!? o.O’
First of all, Thieves that use P/D run a condition spec and the ones running P/P are burst spec.
So how does this change affect this particular builds?…
- P/D thieves use CnD to enter stealth and Sneak attack to stack up bleeds, and ocasional Head shot to interrupt something important. usually they carry around Caltrops and the trait Hard to Catch. If they wanted an Imob they would take the Devourer Venom…
- P/P thieves relie heavily on their initiative to Unload. the new Body Shot is a initiative sinc with insignificant trad off. Not to mention that the vulnerability stack (that a burst speced thief needs) was cut to half…
I thank the devs for trying to change something about the pistols but imo the change actually made the Pistol even less desirable in both situations (P/D & P/P) since it is more expensive, the thief gains nothing from the imob since the after-cast lasts almost as long as the imob not to mention the vulnerability nerf to 50% its just not worth it.

Imo what should have been changed was the auto-attack.
The Pistol auto-attack must be the weakest in game… its is very slow, does very low dmg and the bleed is insignificant…
If Devs would have changed it a little bit, maybe ad a second and even third attack to it with the third being stronger and with a condi on it (burn for 2sec for example), make it fire faster, then I’m sure that both Condi speced thieves with P/D and bursty P/P thieves would be happy. Not to mention that the thieves might have had 2 more viable builds…

@Allie Murdock: Could you make it so that falling deaths don’t count towards anything in Skyhammer? Would that be too complex of a change on your end? Sending a guy over the edge is reward enough; we don’t need any points for it…
unless ranks are rolled back 5-6 weeks it’s pointless rank means nothing now that PvE players are 10+ ranks above some pure pvp players….
Just wanted to say that you guys are having a similar discussion to what we’re having internally.
Yes, the Warriors are pushing some of the condition builds out of the meta, but with our sigil of para fix, those same warriors will now be losing a little damage and a little control.
We need to give it a little while to see how the meta settles. Then we’ll be putting in trait improvement and skill improvements.
We felt the Warrior would eventually rise up to become the class it is now (it took a while for people to catch on), but once you guys figured it out, they did what we expected them to do.
Now we need to see where you guys (and the meta) go next.
Im gland that you managed to put the warrior they way you wanted all along and imo it is deserved. i think it is a very good professions and has a few viable builds unlike most of the other professions.
since I main a thief i would love to know what are your expectations for the thieves?! How do you feel it should be played?

I’m gonna be cautiously optimistic but I think all 8 classes are viable now.
they always were! the problem is each one only has 1 viable spec and every one specs the same throughout the classes, and in some of this classes, the specs are stronger that the best possible spec from another profession.
If you saw the last A-net stream you’d know what to expect from the balance team.
They have no freeing idea what they are doing and cant even articulate a phrase… Grats to the brilliant mind that decided to put these 2 in front of a camera!
err… the huge majority of thieves have been playing S/D evade spec for what?! 3 month now?! hardly anyone uses stealth these days… not to mention that the stealth “nerf” was a 1sec nerf to 1 specific utility… completely irrelevant!
Wow…totally useless, this make pistol in main hand just more scrap.
Thieves take few nerf in direct dmg, but got good boon in combos.
Dark + Projectiles or Whirl scales with power. Now deals more dmg and steal more health.
It’s possible that Short Bow, Pistol and OH Dagger deals double of dmg now.
Was a ridiculous boon in dps and sustain at same time.

What is a thief’s role in SPvP?! what is a thief better at, then any other profession?!
- Thief burst is pitiful, any professions can survive it and outlast the thief
- Condition is laughable, it is countered by PASSIVE abilities.
- Poisons are terrible I have the filling they exist to fill the minimum amount of available abilities for the profession.

The patch did a lot. Helped solve a Warrior issue and helped balance s/d thief somewhat; evades are still broken, but they do less boon strip which is a bonus.
As far as classes being broken, I literally see nothing that stands out. Anyone who is QQing about things being unreasonably broken is just mad that their spec can’t beat it. Mesmers aren’t broken, yet they destroy most warrior builds.
Actually Chaos Storm is broken atm. So welcome mesmers.

I would recommend resetting the leader boards every 3 months.
Rank means nothing.
well it USE TO mean something, rank means nothing now that every one, their mother and dog are rank 50+.
I played since beta and am a rank 41.
In PvP, Rank was the ONLY thing we had to show off, now it is absolutely meaningless…
But on the otherhand, you barely do anything to prevent it. Slow mitigation is nothing.
It’s not as simple as hitting a switch. This issue has been one that we have had several discussions over. The problem is that many of the solutions are either too complex, or they hurt a portion of our player base, etc.
Also, we can’t say when/if we have a solution to the issue, because when we do we see a huge increase in players abusing it (at the beginning of the month, I said that we had a fix to help mitigate it, and we saw the numbers skyrocket).
You will just have to trust that we will protect the integrity of the game as soon as possible.
why haven’t you guys take this map out of the game temporarily or block access to it until you have it sort out?! this way ppl WILL keep abusing it and legit PvP players that worked hard for their rank are reduced to insignificance and even considered glory farmers…
Removing this map temporarily from the game was the right thing to do when the exploiting started, now it does not matter what you do or not to fix it.

This is an insult to legit pvp players. the ones i know, all stopped playing including myself (I was the first one) and non of us is planing to come back if a clueless PvE player who plays all day is 10+ ranks above us that ONLY did PvP since beta.
A public test server would help a lot with most of Josh’s points…
I know that Dev’s extencivelly test stuf internaly but they also say that in live servers stuff happens that was not detected on the internal testing.
Let us help you guys test sensible stuff like WvWvW changes and balance changes for example, you can keep all the new stuff out of the PTS and let us test out ONY what you guys think it is important to be tested.
I assure you will have pages and pages of feedback that surely help you implement it in live servers more efficiently, less buggy and with a lower risk of it getting exploited like it happened a few times previously and it is still currently happening, SkyHammer that made all legit pvp players like myself with high rank feel common and trivial with nothing to show for their effort…
Off topic: I don’t know if it is possible but… IF you wanted, could you roll back all ranks gained in the last month?! so that ppl would have the same rank they had 1 month ago?!

the Problem is it was promised january to be released start of the second part of this year. and now u talk about basics at the end of the year or next january.
I think it’s totally reasonable to say you’d like to see progress faster, and no shocker so would we! We all play PvP all the time too, and want everything done as quickly as possible, folks are working very long hours to try and accomplish just that.
However, what’s not ok is saying stuff like we “promised in jan” we would have new rewards this year. In January, we said we would be doing custom arenas, leader boards, and spectator mode. We did all of those things.
In July, we said we’re going to do a tournament at PAX, have separate solo and team queues for PvP, add ways to get you progressing towards legendaries in PvP, and updating the reward systems for PvP. We’ve accomplished half of those goals already, and hope to have made some real progress towards rewards/legendaries before the end of the year, which still has 2 months to go. In working on rewards, we decided we wanted to do something that’s very work intensive and much cooler for PvP players, so not all of it will be done this year.
Anyway I just want to call this out that having expectations, and providing critical feedback is fantastic, it’s how we all grow and make a better game together. But if we’re going to take the time to try and communicate and, it’s only fair you take the time to properly represent what we’ve said when criticizing it.
Here is a Suggestion Colin,
Place a Vendor in the Heart of the Mists that sells weapon skins, Shoulder skins and Head skins. These skins should have a minimum Rank requirement, Every 5 Ranks ppl would be able to buy new skins using glory.
If you decide do add some gold earning though PvP (all pure pvp players would be happy with that) the vendor would sell the skins for glory plus gold, this way there would be a glory and gold sink in PvP.
About you guys playing pvp all the time… I Believe SOME of you might, If all played pvp regularly it would not be in the state it is balance wise.
Just to confirm, we are working on new maps. I can’t give too many details, but a few things:
1) We’re trying maps with no cap points.
2) We’re trying mechanics that focus on high risk/reward mechanics that can win to sudden wins/sudden losses.
3) We’re trying maps that focus on “big play” moments that permanently impact the map flow/map status.
4) I can’t give an ETA on when you’d see one live, because we’re trying different maps, and each of them takes time to prototype, etc.I think that conquest is easy for new players to get into, and it’s allowed for some amazing high-level games so far! But we’d like to try some new things that get away from conquest.
Also, as many of us have said, we want to give players enough variety such that they can change what they play from time to time, while also being sure that we don’t fracture the player-base by spreading players out to too many different game types.
I know this isn’t a super exhaustive answer, but just wanted to give you guys a quick update.

Also about spreading the players, if you guys manage to attract more players into PvP, that wont be a problem.

The effort you are outing into this “protect” of creating a stable bridge of communication with the community is very important!

Its just a shame that it took over a year for the construction of this bridge to start… Why not do this from the start? I’m mainly a PvP player and the pvp community in this game is unfortunately diminishing fast… I just wish you can do something about it fast and hope that it isn’t to late…

Am I the only one that thinks this post was just one lengthy “throw some dust in their eyes” damage control type? Because after months of ignoring feedback and even stating that the forums are a vocal minority so they don’t care for them as long as they don’t notice players leaving the game it is hard for me to just accept this on blind faith.

Edit. I’m 34, i work very hard every day (10h-12h), I have a little 3 year old daughter that i love to be and play with, i train 3 days a week (MMA) the little time that i have left i like to play, I’ve been a competitive online gamer since 1998.
Played competitively in EU with my Clan and made it to the top 3 (played FPS, RTS, and MMOrpg’s) now im just another causal player
On my free time I play for FUN, this game is NOT fun anymore and besides chating with my guild mates that are awesome ppl, apart from that there is nothing appealing about Gw2 atm sadly….

Anet is trying to mitigate the problem to prevent further exploiting in the future. In addition to that, there are three options:
1. Do nothing about the exploiters. Exploiters benefit, legitimate players suffer.
2. Ban major exploiters, suspend minor exploiters. Exploiters suffer, legitimate players benefit.
3. Reset the rank system. Exploiters suffer, legitimate players suffer. Players who are new to sPvP would benefit, and this could open the door to a PvP reward overhaul.
if they decide to reset all and throw 1 year of pvp out the window ill shift+del the game and forget it ever existed. about 6 years ago i quit wow when 2k arena points were taken from me due to a patch bug and they refused to give them back to me.
I’m only rank 40 but i reached it legitimately, they have no right to take that from me.

It is obvious that every one will play the spec that provides more chances of wining! no one likes to lose. it is A-net’s job to make sure that there are a variety of specs with similar viability and not just 1 per profession or in some cases zero.

It is late, but if they fix it, at least the number of farmed ranks won’t grow. 2 years later, if we may actually have some changes for PvP (yeah like a miracle) and the population starts to grow, your rank will matter again, because skyhammer famers will be a very low % + newbies flock in and won’t have this to farm their rank. But if they just say “whatever, harm has been done already” – then this will get worse day by day
in 2 years well all be playing something else. by the looks of things and the way this game is developed, one thing i’m sure of, the pvp community will not grow in this game. On the contrary, the fewer players we have the more will leave due to long queues and unbalanced teams.
Imo A-net had everything to make this game the best in the busyness but they screwed up… not once, not twice but multiple times, and once ppl start leaving, there is no turning back.

A-net will not dare to make an expansion for this game.
Many many MANY ppl are unhappy with the game and if an expansion came out and force ppl to spend money to keep playing, most of them would simply quit the game for good.

First thing that they HAD to do when this started was,take the map out and only put it back in after it was made unfarmable.

About the (in)balance team, Sharp i trust! even if i don’t agree with him I give him the benefit of the doubt, he knows (most of the time) what he is talking about.
