Problems with the newly-added faces

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I agree, Spiral. It seems like GW2 is so obsessed with creating the “ideal”—flawless faces, supermodel bodies, and so on—that they would break the lore (because a norn in tons of makeup? Really??) and sacrifice true variety, for the sake of that"ideal". Truly ugly characters, or characters with physical imperfections would be wonderful. Not everyone would like them, but then, that’s what variety is about. Catering to many tastes.

I’m starting to go off-subject though. Point being that yes, the norn and human faces were more of the same old stuff. The asura faces were lazy, the charr glitchy, and the sylvari lazy (to a lesser degree).
That’s not to say I don’t like the new faces—I do like them. I created a new character so I could use one of them. But arenanet needs to pay more attention to quality.

How good is the Ash Legion Story?

in Charr

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

I like the Ash Legion story a lot. The poster above is correct as well—if you have a female Ash charr, there is a funny moment in one of the early stories, involving the Flame Legion. You don’t get that moment with a male, but either way, the story is very good. In general, the charr personal stories are some of the best, and Ash legion’s is no exception.

In terms of a huge charr sneaking up on someone, it isn’t as unlikely as you might think. Lions and Tigers in real life do it all the time, and they’re just animals. Charr have the animal stalking ability, combined with human-like intelligence, great technology, and magic.
Also, I have noticed while playing a charr that Ash legion charr tend to be smaller and thinner then Blood or Iron charr. Small-framed charr probably have more natural talent for sneaking then huge, bulky ones—so they end up in Ash.

Problems with the newly-added faces

Weindrasi.3805

I am always pleased to see newly-added faces to our character creation selection. However, this update’s round of new faces has shown some troubling trends.

First and foremost, the re-use of old faces, with minor edits. While there is nothing wrong with this being done sometimes, arenanet needs to be cautious. In the past, they have cut corners with regards to character appearance. Arenanet needs to keep in mind that, while some re-used faces are fine and even desirable, this is no excuse for them to stop developing entirely new ones.

Secondly, the issue with the asuran faces. Of all the races, asura are the most androgynous. The other races have gender differences in both body AND face. Asura, on the other hand, only have facial differences—their bodies are all the same. An asura’s face is its most important trait—far more so then the other races. As such, it is very, very important to design asuran faces without cutting corners.
The fact that the new asura faces for males and females are the same isn’t okay. It’s not about gender. In fact, I like the idea of having faces that are the same across both sexes. It allows characters to not be defined by their gender. However, these faces were not added to promote gender equality. They were added because of sheer laziness. And that’s what isn’t okay—the laziness. The fact that corners are cut—and on a race where facial distinction is so vital.

And lastly, the fact that new faces were added in the first place, when the old faces are still so glitchy. Take the charr, for example. On some of the faces which were added previously, the teeth clip horribly into the face, headgear does not fit, and lip movement is glitchy. On one of the male faces, the teeth are so terrible it’s just about unusable. Before adding new faces, with the same glitch problems, arenanet needs to fix the last ones they added.

Female charr creation (help me)

At the end of the day, you’re only going to be happy if you play with character creation and choose for yourself. We cannot choose for you.
That said, we can give advise.

In terms of bodies, there are two that have a more muscular neck then the rest. Out of these two, one is a little bit thinner then the other. I suggest it. It has strong muscles in the neck and arms, but a graceful, slender torso—it sounds about like what you want.

In terms of faces, you’re going to have to play with the sliders. You can make the same face look drastically different depending on what you do with the sliders. To start, I suggest the lion face, the tiger face, or the mean-looking face with the underbite. In terms of the mean-looking face, you can tone it down A LOT by changing the shape of the eyes and mouth, and making the teeth smaller. The end result is actually quite pleasing and unique-looking.
In terms of fur, avoid white and off-white. White and near-white female charr are extremely overdone—you see them EVERYWHERE because so many people make them.

Female characters look way better

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

I prefer male characters.
As a female player, I feel empowered by being able to play a strong, capable fighter. Running around with my breasts flouncing around and my skin exposed does the exact opposite—makes me feel like I’m just a tool for some 14-year-old nerd’s pleasure fantasy.
It’s easier to make a male character look strong and capable— it’s not a constant struggle to find something that doesn’t flash my breasts or show the shape of my bum. So, for human-like characters at least, I tend to make males. It’s just a lot of frustration off my shoulders.

That said, I did manage to make a female human guardian who looks quite tough. I used the biggest female body, and found armor that adds a lot of bulk to her frame without drawing attention to her breasts or her bum.

Honestly, I do find it odd that there aren’t any friendly Krait.
Although they guard their hatcheries closely, people have broken through those defenses before. In a story regarding one of the sylvari who joined the Nightmare Court, a group of wardens breaks through to a krait hatchery, and decides to let the babies escape and live. It isn’t a far stretch to imagine one of those babies being raised by a good person, or growing up on its own without evil influence.

More variety is always good. If you don’t like an option, don’t use it. There are plenty of others to pick from.

but nearly all of them are already ugly like this one.
and the last patch brought the scarlets hairs, btw.

i also think there are still players waiting for a good looking
long hair style…

so i dont know what i did,
i just posted my mind about this hairstyle.

Posting your mind is fine. Saying “no” to more options in a character creator that is currently limited is silly.
Yes, more long hair styles would be great. More long hair, more scarlet hair, more mushroom hair, more whatever. More options!

Mini Tybalt is a girl

There are some lions in real life that, due to genetic abnormalities, have traits of the opposite sex.
In rare cases, a female lion will have a mane and/or behave like a male, or a male lion will have no mane.
Plus, I’ve seen some people who use a female charr toon for their male character during roleplay.
BUT, Tybalt was a typical male, boy tail and all. This is a glitch—and an odd one at that. It’s clear the mini has a male body—no female has a neck or a chest that thick. So I don’t know how that happened with the tail.

I think their fur textures could be applied better—they look low quality and flat.
But in terms of the body itself, I don’t see what you mean by “clunky”. The charr are big beast-monsters. They’re supposed to be hefty.

In terms of human females, yuck. To me, it looks like arenanet has gone so overboard in attempting to make them “sexy”, that it’s turned them into deformed she-freaks

I am ‘overly sensitive’, need to ‘live with it’ and ‘get over it’. Got it. Thanks.

I would ask you: Why the hell do you care? But i know some people are more sensitive about such things than others.
But seriously, it’s a internet, you will always see comments that could offend you if you let it, anywhere. You don’t even know these people, you have never seen them. For all

Well, you are, to be honest. Pretty much everything that Mirta said is true.
you know, they can be bunch of little spoiled kids or some sad people with no life or you know…. aliens!!! (joke)
Serisouly tho, just don’t waste your energy for people that want to insult you.
But like Mirta said, not everyone is necessary trying to insult with those words. It’s just a popular word for “describing” some things.
When i was a kid, some kids were using words they didn’t even like or understand, but you know it was cool to use them because it was “in” so they had to use it, so they were “cool” as well.

It doesn’t matter if someone is a little kid or pitiful in real life. It doesn’t matter that “words shouldn’t hurt you”. It doesn’t matter that “the interwebs are cruel”

The fact is, words DO hurt. And we’re only human. We have bad days. We feel pain—even when somebody doesn’t mean harm.
Maybe this is “the interwebs”, but behind the screen are real people. And real people can’t always choose whether or not they hurt.

Instead of teaching people “Don’t let words hurt you”, we should teach people “Don’t say words that hurt”

I would love if they added this.
I have to see people use the term for physically forcing another person to have sex (term is censored) every single day. In WvW, when we win a fight, someone always inevitably screams R***
If they are particularly vile, they’ll go into graphic detail about it.
And 90% of the time, when I ask people not to use that word, and not to joke about it, I get told to stop being sensitive, ect.

In a public, anonymous sphere like this, vulnerable people are going to be exposed to all sorts of damaging language. There really needs to be a better system in place, not only to protect yourself from it and block it out, but to effectively report it.

Scarlet Briar is an overused cardboard cutout, rightfully discarded in an alley dumpster behind a GameStop, bleached by the sun and weakened by the rain until almost nothing recognizable remains. Yet, you would take some fresh paint and recolor the discarded remnants to better suit the alleyway rather than calling the trash company to empty the dumpster? I don’t understand your viewpoint. She’s gone. You should rejoice!

Speak for yourself. She was a great character! Arenanet messed up on presenting her, but that doesn’t change the fact that beneath some clumsy writing, you have a true gem.
As for a sun-bleached cardboard cutout—I would definitely take some fresh paint to it and make it beautiful. That’s what artists do.

I think all the new faces across both sexes have clipping issues. Compared to some, that one is pretty minor. I do hope they fix it all though. In the mean time, be glad you don’t have to deal with Rytlock-syndrome teeth XD

I would love to see the Ghost of Scarlet, and I think Arenanet could make it awesome. She’d still have her wacky off-the-wall personality—like, to the point it would unnerve or frighten the player character—but she’d be corruption free, and as such on our side.

Initially, I would have said that Scarlet had cut herself off from the dream, and the memories wouldn’t return, but I’m not so sure.
Even after Scarlet cut her ties to the Mother, the Mother was still aware of Scarlet’s emotions and her suffering. If you talk to the Mother Tree now, she has a dialogue that thanks you for killing Scarlet, because you basically freed Scarlet from being in pain as she tried to resist dragon corruption.
It sounds to me like the Pale Tree was still in Scarlet’s mind, aware of what was happening, even if they could no longer communicate due to Mordy and Scarlet’s own unwillingness. And if that’s the case, it’s possible Scarlet’s memories could have still flowed into the Dream. We really don’t know enough about how the Dream or the Mother work to determine it for sure.

Why Trahearne messed up

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

I think it’s a combination of things.

First, the pact is fighting on multiple fronts. They’re trying to push back Jormag’s influence in the Shiverpeaks, keep Tequatl under control, clean up Orr, and prevent the Flame Legion from becoming a threat again among other things. All these various tasks probably keep troops stretched thin. New threats may arise, but the troops can’t just leave their stations to deal with them. If you leave old threats untended to deal with new threats, then you’ll just lose control of everything.

Second, since the Pact has already lost a ton of airships to Scarlet, I’m sure they’re stretched even thinner then the troops. Taking airships away from their posts to help Lion’s Arch presents the same problems as sending troops—but since airships are a scarce resource right now, they’d be even harder to replace.

Third, Scarlet has an army that rivals the Pact in power. If the Pact needs to stay strong to fight dragons, they can’t afford open combat against another army—not unless they are forced into it. Really, their best option is to resist Scarlet indirectly—which they have been doing. The individual Orders have been providing resources and shelter to those displaced by Scarlet’s army. Also, heroes and adventurers with connections to the Pact (us), have organized to create an offensive. Since we haven’t been formally stationed anywhere, we aren’t restricted like the typical Pact soldier.

And if someone had their face that close to my norn’s butt, she’d probably pound them anyway. Idk if you can do that with the outfit you want but honestly, it’s arenanet that needs to change, not you. The majority of female norn players have the skinniest or near-skinniest body type, and they all look very same-ish.

Charr on Religon

in Charr

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

Thousands of years ago, the charr were the dominant race in Tyria. They believed in Gods, but their warlike culture said that Gods should be dominated and slain in combat—not worshipped. This was not out of hatred, but because the charr believed they were superior and were meant to rule all.
When humans came to the southern coast of Ascalon, they saw the charr as beasts—not people. A human hero assassinated their Khan Ur (their king, basically), to weaken the charr. Under the direction of the war god Balthazar, the humans attacked the charr and the war began. Even though the charr were powerful, they had no magic. For this reason, they were driven out of Ascalon and defeated.
The charr were desperate to regain their land and turn the war around. They recognized that the humans had gods who gave them magic—and wondered if the charr should worship gods too.
A Flame Legion warband found the Titans—minions of an evil, fallen god (Abbadon). The warband made a deal with the titans—to worship them in return for magic. When the warband returned to charr society with the Titans for worship, Flame Legion saw it as a chance to gain power and rule over the rest of the charr. Flame Legion became the mouthpiece of the gods, and claimed they were superior.
A female warrior named Balthea rebelled against the Flame Legion because she realized they were trying to enslave the rest of the charr. She spread her rebellion through a network of female allies, and nearly overthrew Flame Legion. But she failed, and Flame Legion executed her. After this, all the charr submitted.
Because the rebellion had been started by women, Flame Legion declared that women were untrustworthy and inferior to men. They forbade women from combat training and made them slaves to men—often forced to serve in chains. For hundreds of years, the charr lived this way, under Flame Legion. The titan’s magic allowed the charr to win the war against the humans, but their once-free race was changed. Although the females were treated the most horrifically, every charr was enslaved to the will of the Flame Shamans.
In Guild Wars 1, our human heroes defeat the titans. This forces the Flame Legion to find new fake gods—the destroyers. By this point, a charr named Pyre Fierceshot realizes that Flame Legion has been lying to enslave the rest of the race. He rebels against Flame, and is imprisoned to be executed, but our human heroes rescue him.
Pyre Fierceshot starts a huge rebellion among the charr. Years later, it is carried on by his daughter, Kalla Scorchrazor. For hundreds of years, many women had been training to fight in secret, waiting for the chance to rebel and gain freedom. Kalla became the leader of these women, and formed a female army. Kalla’s army joined the male rebels and convinced them of female equality. With the combined female and male forces, the charr rebels overthrew the Flame Legion.
After Flame Legion was defeated, the charr swore to never be deceived by religion again. Females regained their equality, and the charr returned to their old view—that gods were to be conquered, not worshipped.
The oppression by Flame Legion and the abuse of women for religion is such a huge part of charr history, it affects their race even now. Charr associate religion with abuse of power, and use of deception to enslave others.

Look at my character, with the armor and weapons he’s wielding. Seems girly, right?

http://imgur.com/4AslkG5

Now look at my character; the difference is like night and day.

http://imgur.com/oleM1yX

Chainsaws will always make characters look manlier, and that’s a fact.

You want to know something else? As a Mesmer I can summon three more characters with chainsaws, so my character uses eight chainsaws. Can you think of something manlier that a guy with 8 chainsaws? No?

THAT’S BECAUSE THERE ISN’T ANYTHING.

No amount of glitter, butterflies, or pink can hold up to the manliness of 8 chainsaws.

When I wvwvw, there are a lot of players who will either run away me or jump off cliffs to their imminent demise because their mind cannot comprehend the manly manliness that is 8 chainsaws.

So you should tell your husband to ditch that character and make a manly Mesmer. With Chainsaws.

Season 1 | Lack of Major Male Characters!

I don’t like it. As a male I would like characters that I can identify with.

- Lots of female characters taking most the major roles
- Main relationships are all female
- Main antagonist is female
- The male character are poorly represented. Faren is an idiot, Braham is a dimwit, Evon has questionable ethics, Canach was basically a bad guy.

I’m a guy and I would like to see some males characters included that aren’t jokes. Two male characters that I did like they killed them off in the personal story.

GW2 doesnt exist in a vacuum, the standard catters to you (and me, I’m male). We have

- Lots of male characters taking most (if not all) of the major roles
- Main relationships are all male-female
- Main antagonist is male
- The female character are poorly represented. The women in the refrigerator or damsel in distress tropes are way too overused.

How many times did you call for equality? I bet none.
But when a game has a strong female cast it’s imbalanced, LOL.

Chi-square analyses indicated that female characters (n?=?70) were underrepresented in comparison to their male counterparts (n?=?419) as hypothesized. In comparison to male characters, females were significantly more likely to be shown partially nude, featured with an unrealistic body image, and depicted wearing sexually revealing clothing and inappropriate attire as also predicted. Implications for these findings are discussed using social cognitive theory as a theoretical anchor.”

Female Charr, floating shoulder armor

UGH! I hate this! HATE IT HATE IT!
Male charr at least get SOME decent shoulder pieces, but since females have smaller shoulders, the float is twice as horrid.
Tail clipping is nothing next to the abomination that is charr shoulders.

Disappointed that scarlet died.

I tried to read the posts but they’re all long and debate-ey so I gave up.
I was sad that Scarlet died, I adored her.
But, I feel like it was the only way. After her actions, there is no redemption. From the character’s viewpoints, there is no logic in keeping her alive a moment longer.

Masculine effects for a male Mesmer?

So Anet will check what’s under your underwear and give you skill effects depending on your sex? Well, that would be incredibly insulting. I’m a woman but I prefer masculine effects on female characters, and feminine effects on male characters. I prefer to play a male character because the females are already too insultingly girly (I can’t take them seriously as the adults/professionals they should be). Not every woman is girly and not every man is macho.

Personally I would prefer to play male spellcasters, but Anet made them ugly in Gw2 :-( The females look too girly and I can’t stand to play them because I don’t identify with them at all. So I just don’t play any spellcasters at all.

My husband didn’t like how male spellcasters looked like in Gw1, and he didn’t like playing female. So he didn’t play any except male ritualists, who looked masculine (sexy too!)

I don’t know how Anet could do what you want without being even more insulting than they are now. Unless they let us choose the style we want, a lot of people would not be happy.

I agree, the defaults for female spellcasters are blah, but with some work they can turn out very cool. Guild Wars 2 gives you enough clothing and dye variety, plus facial sliders, so females don’t have to look like brainless dolls. Basically, use the far extremes of the facial sliders to force that supermodel look OUT, pick the biggest body type, and dress it in practical clothing with cool dyes. Poof! Strong female caster

Who will the next Villian be?

Now that Scarlet’s dead, it brings to question—who will the next major villain be? With the jungle dragon awake, the Living Story probably won’t need a new villain for a while, but there’s bound to be one at some point.

So, what do you want in the next big baddie? Who are they? What is their motivation?

Ideas.
The White Mantle. We don’t know what they’re like today, but it would be interesting to find out.

A Vengeful Aetherblade. The Aetherblades were formed by villians from across Tyria. With their leader dead, they have to find new motivations. Maybe one of them could take the initiative and provide the Triad (NightCourt+Inquest+Bandits in Brisban Wildlands) with technology and leadership, to make them far more deadly.

A Son of Svanir. They have tons of potential for interesting lore and villians. Although, an SoS villain probably won’t happen until we focus on killing Jormag.

A Corrupted Female Norn. Perhaps she grew up among the SoS all her life, as a submissive servant woman. Until they beat her so badly she seemed dead. They throw her body out in the snow and abandon it. Still alive, she manages to drag herself, and comes to some Corrupt Ice Shards or something. She becomes this extremely powerful dragon minion who commands the SoS—they don’t realize the commander is female.

Sylvari from other pale trees that are under the Jungle Dragon’s power.

Season 1 | Lack of Major Male Characters!

Don’t hate on Braham and Faren! They are beautiful!

In all seriousness though, yes, I have noticed this. That said, I don’t think it’s a problem—and I quite like it.
In most games of the past, the issue is the exact opposite—there are twice as many men as women—or virtually no women. Thing is, that became a problem because it happened across many, many, many games. Guild Wars 2 is just a single game. For Season 1, the writers focused on a lot of female characters—and that’s all right. There is still a ton of room for prominent males—Canach, Magnus, Evon, Braham, Trahearne, Rytlock, and yes even Logan—to develop as characters. Plus, with the Jungle Dragon waking up, we can expect new maps in the Maguuma Jungle, and new characters—some of whom will be males—to go along with them.
In particular, I think that due to the way Logan and Canach have been portrayed, we’re going to see a lot more of those two soon. Destiny’s Edge 2.0 still needs a salad, and my bet’s on Canach for that role.
