Leveling up is a integral part of any RPG, tabletop or otherwise. GW2 is classified as an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) for a reason. Without having some sort of character progression (i.e. leveling) It’s not by definition, an RPG. Even if the classic idea of leveling were removed from this game, there would be no “starting out at level 80” because level 80 wouldn’t mean anything. But even with the idea of aquiring new traits and abilities as you progress it’s still a form of leveling up. You character is getting better as they proceed through the story, events, dungeons, etc. Which is the whole point of “leveling up” anyway. Also without Leveling, the is no way to measure your progess or strength. All Mobs would be the same difficulty, The bandits in Queensdale would be as tough as Ice Brood colossi in Frostgorge. Having champions, elites, and veterans would be meaningless, because those designations mean they are of a higher level. Gear would become meaningless. What would it matter if you had the exotic “kitten greatsword of awesomeness”? It being exotic means its a higher level than rare or masterwork. It would be the same as the “OK sword of Meh” Stats would have to be the same on both. because there is no levels.
Not having levels, would make this similiar to Second Life, just set in Tyria. It would be boring as all get out.
Isnt that mostly what they did with down scaling? Honestly if they balanced all the mobs around level 80 or 1 it wouldn’t matter, since that is exactly what they are trying to achieve by having you scale down or up in content. The only thing that changes is the number by your name. Oh and i forgot the can lock you out of content by making it outlevel you. Just an artificial time gate in your way.
I don’t feel like leveling is a grind.
I never look at my XP bar and generally don’t know my level until I log in the next day.
I often forget to spend skill points for days at a time.
I don’t get why people make work from a game. Isn’t the point of playing a game to relax and enjoy yourself?
I enjoy having levels, and even when I get to cap, I will still enjoy the game. I play for fun gameplay, not to add work-induced stress to my life.
Why do you enjoy levels? You yourself just said you never look at them, you dont even know when you do or what level you are. You dont even spend the points when you get them.
So the only reason i can see is that you like seeing a number that goes up giving you a sense of progression, because your own statements seem ti imply that leveling affects nothing in your game play at all. Which in itself i would think would be an arguement for removing levels.
But mostly that is why leveling is there. Because people like to feel like they are going somewhere. Even when they aren’t.
It is sort of funny. I don’t play much anymore so i don’t know if it still does this, but back in the day (launch) when you would put items into the mail to be sent, it would auto fill in the name of someone close by. Even if a name was there already it would replace it. So it was beat to send mail standing in a field alone or put the receiver in last, because lord knows who the game decided needed your mail the most.
Wait until someone pulls you through a closed gate. Ahh the fun of a buggy WVW.
I had a beta invite from another big name game and I’ve been trying it out. It’s not bad….it’s pedestrian. They have a whole lot of work to do before it’s half the game that Guild Wars 2 is.
If you’re talking about that big name game everyone is trying out this week end… Well, you’re almost right.
Because it’s totally true that that game’s combat system is even worse than GW2’s, not only that, but it’s totally broken, with random hit spots and damage that comes when the animation is still running… And speaking of animation, well, i probably seen worse only in the single player version of that game…That said, for being a stress where almost every single person in the planet as been invited, the server (yes, it’s only one) is literally humiliating all GW2’s, and the game engine too is a beast, running supersmooth already with some of the beautiest sceneries ever seen in a MMO.
The question i have, since i didn’t sign up for beta of said magical game, is a year after launch will i still be using the same 3 attack skills i had launch day? I hate to think Gw2 with its deep and vast character progression, actually manage to set a trend, with no actual skill progression.
I’ll give you 2 weeks before you go back on most of what you said.
I play since release day and still play several hours each day and love it.
Then you should be in the class of people who suffer the most from the games problems.
Quite a few people have been playing since launch. Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean it’s bad. You just don’t like it, and you know…that’s okay.
It’s when people start trying to make their opinion into fact that the problem starts.
I like this game so the game is good for me. You don’t like this game so the game is bad for you.
Neither of us is right. But you shouldn’t assume the OP won’t like it in two weeks, because there are people playing since beta 1 who still like it.
I like the game. I still play many hours a day. That doesn’t make the direction the game is going good, it’s just the stuff from launch/shortly after is still interesting to me.
MMOs should never have been designed to cater to people who work 9-5 and play 1 hour a day around a family life.
Jeez, that’s a bit harsh. Do you not have to work for a living or something?
I’m not criticising the group I mentioned, simply stating that MMOs have never been catered to such players, and as a genre known for such deep character progression and development, methods should never be easily attainable by those with extremely limited time.
I have literally never seen an MMO with deep character progression and development, barring GW2 of course. I’m not sure what MMOs you’ve been playing, but please, do tell!
That said, as far as completion and everything, I totally understand that being hard to attain. I’ll just keep working at it till 2030 and beyond.
Deep character progression? Im not sure what you consider character progression, but i would imagine you could easily be 80 inside of a week. At that point you character progression is done.
You could argue that ascended gear could take much much longer, but most say that the stats changes on them are so small they dont matter. So you are left after one week, doing achievements and farming to be pretty. I suppose you could argue that if you wvwvw there is still progression to be had but it is hardly deep. Or you could argue you could spend time trying to get the look you want. Again not deep.
I just started playing again to kill time lately, so maybe i just havent discovered the deep part yet.
As clean as the UI is I would still love to be able to customize it. I mean I have been playing with the same skills for a year. Pretty sure I know what they are. Can I go ahead and turn that part of the UI off? I haven’t done a quest on purpose in months. Love to turn it off. Love to Hide the menu bar. But even if I could do none of that I would love to be able to scale parts of or all of the UI so I can at least make a bunch of that stuff smaller.
The UI to me is a pretty good example of how I often end up feeling about the game. It is well designed and presented well and makes me think awesome!! But after a while of using it, I scratch my head at how limited it appears to be. And go from thinking this is the best, to eh, it is alright.
Have said thief zerg pop thieve’s guild all at once. A 30 man thief zerg is suddenly a 90!
(T) randomdude1: there are only 25- 30 just capped spel. Heading mendons.
(T) random dude 2: ok we will head them off…. Oh god run!! Run for you lives, the whole server is here!! Hackers are breaking the map limits! Run, report! Run some more!
Someone call the po-po! Match up talk sighted!
Let’s see.
Changes that persist.
Moa Racing (Lion’s Arch)
Not So Secret Jumping Puzzle (Gendarran Fields)
Twilight Arbor Aetherblade Path (Caledon Forest)
Tequatl (Sparkfly Swamp) completely redone
Sanctum Sprint (minigame)
Southsun Survival (minigame)
Kessex Hills (new events, hearts have changed, new daily chest)
WvW (ruins, ranks with specializations, traps, new area for GvG set aside)
PvP (solo queue for tournaments, observation mode and new arenas)
Crafting (six crafting professions now go up to 500)
Ascalon Catacombs revampThen there’s recurring content that isnt’ there today but is in fact new content that you can experience. Stuff like Dragon Bash, Bazarre of the Four Winds, the Queen’s Gauntlet and SAB.
Even the two dungeons that were available and taken away have returned to the Fractals, as new fractals…along with mistlock instabilities from level 31-50.
Those who say nothing has changed obviously aren’t looking very hard.
Edit: That’s not counting QoL updates of which their were many, including changes to champion bags.
Thank you. this is much more helpful then the previous if you dont like it go away post. Now I have some things to go check out.
Im sort of in the same boat. Played for a couple months after the game came out. Came back a couple days ago, to see whats up, and Sort of ended up thinking the same thing.
Outside of more ascended gear to grind, Im not sure what else has changed.
- empty by summer, hahahahah I guess everybody can dream
- if you have not noticed, the single most telling thing about gw2 success is how now all upcoming companies are trying to copy some parts of it to integrate into their own creations instead of trying to continue to copy wow.
- Acting like it’s the best thing since sliced bread is also something you thought of by yourself mate.
no where does it say that at all and I did say it has it’s issues but….
even with it’s issues it’s a hell of a lot better than all the crap out there on the ether.
It is funny you say this since you seem to have a bunch of mmo experience. But outside of the speed of the updates, I can’t really think of much that gw2 is the first to do, so I’m not sure how people would steal it from them. Almost every thing in the game has been seen before in another mmo or Arpg, since really gw2 is sort of like smashing the two together.
Now don’t get me wrong. They did the same thing wow did. They took everyone else’s ideas and did them better, or fine tuned them. But both WoW and GW2 simply copied what had been done before, and then did it better.
Agreed….I do.
All this sounds like a bunch of work. I’m gonna grab some pizza. My fire attack should keep going off. Page me if\when we kill him.
Don’t worry. There are no more tiers so it is ok.
I suppose i should retract some of my earlier bashing. While i do think the 3rd place team has it the easiest as the scoring goes, a place you have held every time in the new match up system. This week you are doing it the hard way. Being the lowest ranked team and winning.
I tried to think of some way to mock you for winning but for some reason i couldn’t. I must be getting soft in my old age.
I dunno what you guys are talking about. Since the change I feel like I’m doing massive amounts MORE damage. I throw Meteor Shower over a group of enemies and they melt like ice in a volcano. I’ve even been able to down two or three people at once with it.
Maybe you’re running a 30 water build? Because that did in fact get a damage nerf, but it has nothing to do with the staff specifically.
I have to wonder what the heck you have Been doing with meteor shower all this time, that you haven’t always been downing 2-3 people with it?
It is not all black and white. Haven’t you seen the 900 shades of brown you can dye your crap?
Id like to laugh but i have lost count of the times i have withdrawn or rfi myself off a cliff. I have even downed someone, and then backflipped myself to my death. Which i am sure the downie found highly amusing. Yeah i am bad, so what!
OP still needs ~70 thieves to respond
68.
I went shortbow for AOE and pistol pistol for single target. Pretty easy. In a group of mobs run in a circle spam cluster bomb as int. permits.
For single target run in a circle and spam unload as int permits.
Good luck defending keeps on top of walls now.
We’ll only be able to hit people braindead enough to stand RIGHT NEXT TO THE WALL.Well, on the bright side, we’ll likely see more Thieves in that group, not because we’re braindead, but because we can’t hit anything otherwise.
If youre hiding in keeps and towers and not using an AC youre doing it wrong anyway.
So your counter argument is no one should have range attacks that hit from walls? Interesting proposal.
I’m standing close enough I could throw my gun and hit them, ‘obstructed’
I don’t have to be that skilled, as long as they screw up? -__-’
True of all the classes and
Pretty much the reason I wvw. I suck something horrible. On the good side lots of people are worse.
It is not possible.
Just look at these forums any time raiding is mentioned. People have fits that there might be gear in the game they can’t get. Sure it is tied to an activity they don’t want to do. And you really only need it for that activity, but oh lord there is something in the game they can’t have.
And on the flip side the hardcore aren’t happy when Molly Mcfluff Can spam 1 while standing slightly to the left gets all their cool lots, cause now no one knows how über they are.
It is funny people hate the perma stealth thieves in wvw. Yet every patch they end making it the preferred style. Why would I sit on a wall using a weapons that can’t hit anything when I could be down below messing with people.
Might as well get use to it. They are looking for spvp to make them money. For that they need a fairly balanced game play to get people interested and in.
PvE has been designed to be a casuals paradise, where anyone can do anything and have everything. The people who pve was designed around will spend their money on skins and rng boxes. And balance doesnt really affect them happily standing on the hill to the left spamming 1.
I think what some of you might be experiencing is the lag between what the server is doing and what you’re seeing.
What you see in your screen is client-side information. The server doesn’t have you at the exact same place you are on screen (which is why rubber banding can happen). So you are somewhere, but on the server, you’re not in exactly the same place.
When you’re running, you’re ahead on your screen and then the server updates as it comes.
When you fall, the server updates your health/damage, but if you’ve moved on from the fall, it doesn’t catch up with your machine until you’re on that second drop and it treats it as more falling damage.
It’s just a matter of the fact that server information takes time to get interpreted by your client.
Except you are walking down stairs, so there never was any fall damage to be interpreted at all. Happens to me all the time in wvw going down stairs on towers. Now I notice mostly on my chars with natural speed buffs so maybe that makes a difference.
And it may be a server communication error with where you are and where you were due to lag. But you are still taking fall damage from somewhere you never really fell, and should not have fallen.
Although I don’t think it is lag since I can normally repeat it. The chances of lagging in the same spot running down stairs even when all alone seems fairly slim, I would think.

1. We were having dinner at Lake tower when DR entered without knocking. We told them to come back later…
2. But they would not listen. They were too many mouths to feed, yet they tried to push to the Lord’s table in the high tower.
3. Wave after wave, we convinced ‘the whole lot of them’ it was not very appropriate…
4. We escorted them to the door, and sent them on their way.
5. All the while, some DR were taking a nap at GoM spawn.Stay tuned for more Super-Adventures at Lake-Tower
The caption for the 4th screenshot is quite inappropriate, it obviously should be captioned “ARM”.
Apologies, we will make amends with a prayer to Lord ARM
“The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish, and the tyranny of evil men.
Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper, and the finder of lost children.
And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is ARM, when I lay my vengeance upon thee”
I dont like ARM. He leaves me feeling inadequate. Ill round a corner or out a door, and there is ARM fighting 4-5 people. I say to myself, I should help him. But then I have to stand and watch as he starts killing people. And I think, if i go in there, Ill get killed. Then ill be depressed and have to quit to eat a pint of ice cream and cry myself to sleep. So I just stand and watch. Or pretend like I had a wall somewhere to repair….
Unless I am running out of the keep and he is chain killing deers in the field and then Im all like, What an Idiot.
Running around wvw is really a double edged sword. On one hand, the level of competition is ungodly low. On the other hand, I can actually run my completely destroyed build and still beat just about everyone I fight.
I keep logging on for a night every 2-3 weeks to get my MMO fix, but it’s always disappointing. Hopefully this big patch on the 25th improves things, but I doubt it.
Another P/P thief out there? You should’ve said something earlier in the matchup so we could get a duel going. :/
How does one be a P/P thief? I thought they were inadequate in WvW? If there’s actually a capable build out there for P/P thief I’d love to know it
Just imagine a ranger without a pet.
Also 2x the dodge rolling and a little bit of, What the hell is that thief doing? thrown in.
Don’t Worry it is coming. It has to be right? GW2 is obviously aimed at the casual player. And being one myself, I love being able to log in and hop in a dungeon right quick. It is pretty standard fair in games. Even games that swore they would never do it buckled and did it. So lets all wait together!
You quit…….
The reason they happened to be removed a large amount of the time is because developers want to appeal to a broader, more casual audience in order to make more money. Which is fair enough ofc.
A game with such systems has the potential for far more depth, longevity, dynamism and complexity, but they are also far more prone to griefing, less accessible and simply way less attractive to a larger audience. They are potentially excellent systems from a gameplay depth perspective, they are potentially terrible systems from a dollar return business perspective.
Agreed with in the general sense. WoW has messed up so many MMOs it is getting silly. People see what WoW did and they want that for themselves. Well it wont happen outside of WoW every single MMO is or will be a niche game. Find your niche and ride it. Quit trying to be everything to everyone just because you can hype the crap out of your game and make bank for a couple months.
Make a freaking game. Advertise it for what it is and make your money doing that well.
Obviously you make more money not doing that… Since no one does.
Although to be fair I should say the player base will do this to themselves as well. No one likes hype as much as the MMO player following his game through 5 years of development. What do you mean the third faction got deleted in beta!! I already have the tattoo on my kitten
(edited by Wryscher.1432)
You would have to change the name from World vs World to something else. maybe World vs Just some of that World.
I always find it funny so many people always say how great it is to move while casting and they could never play a game that doesn’t let you move while casting and crap.
Then I log on my staff ele and wonder what the hell they are talking about. On the good side even if I had mana I would never run out. With an average cooldown of 15 seconds on non autoattacks, I usually just run in circles while I wait.
I wonder if there is a special program you need to run to have an idea what the hell he is talking about.
STOP KILLING ME!!
You mean mean people.
If you dont see any other viable classes in WvW, who the hell are you killing? Because you sure as hell don’t see the thieves. It must be very lonely. Unless you don’t play a thief. Then you don’t even see yourself. Are you sure you are really here?
Well i suppose you are right. They probably are fake. Since reading them I was like hey that looks cool. And by track record alone Anet patches usually get a shrug and a whatever. Why did they hype this crap?
But even then, talking about fake patches is still entertaining.
Also cleansing fire is now a worthless ability to slot. The only reason it was useful before was for the stun break.
Yeah im not sure how to feel about that. Honestly i think when running cantrips survivability is too high. You cant die, unless out numbered or you feel like dying. Well i shouldn’t say cant, it was just hard. Could stroll through Zergs and not really care to much about it.
So while it is a big nerf, ill have to play with it and see how it feels.
I mainly do it because people can’t see me when I stealth.
I hope it is legit. I love my staff ele. But always feel slow and clunky. No huge changes there, but hopefully all the time trimming on a bunch of the skills will smooth it out, and make it feel like i don’t spend half my time just standing there. If they are true anyway.
Some of the thief changes might make me sad though. Who ever thought shaving 30 seconds off a trait reset time would make the trait worse.

I feel i must lodge a formal complaint against some girl thief from SF who was camping out on the second floor of our sm. i came up stairs to very politely ask you to leave. And you shot me in the leg. So after much dodging by me and much stealthing by you, you shot me in my head. I even came back since i still needed lots of practice. But you had run off to play with the small heard of guards and Gommies chasing you.
Unfortunately i have my settings on low so i have no idea what you were really wearing. Only that you belonged to some [BS] guild.
So to sum up, im still bad, and people shoot me in the face. So i am filling an official letter of complaint with the union. Good day!
PS i am also very upset with the whole SF server as a whole. When you have 20 people standing in a circle claiming a sentry spot, and one lone thief comes running at you, just go ahead and part like the red sea. Maybe i was just on the way to the hospital to check on my sick grandma?
In the immortal words of Ron White, Now i dont know how many of them it would have taken to kick my kitten but i knew how many they were going to use. That is a handy bit of information to have.
I think it is sort of funny. It is like the event designer looked at the antigrinding video of them saying, they dont want you to swing your sword. Then go swing your sword again. And hey go swing your sword again. And he said wait! That sounds like fun. But we promised we wouldnt swing the sword, so what to do…. What to do…. I know! F is suckas!
The forum always says the great thing about gw2 is you can play as much or as little as you want.
So nothing really.
Something I have often wondered myself. In a game that was designed to have no vertical progression, some of the common sense things people could do or work towards seem to have been left out.
Just a minute ago I was thinking, if only there was a post here complaining about the complainers. then we will have gone full circle and we can end it peace now.
Some improvements have been made to WvW. Some things have gotten worse. Some things are just a matter of opinion.
But, Zergs are just as important as ever. You CAN do small group stuff, Ive seen plenty of small groups running around. But the majority of people find themselves running in zergs.
Coming in 2nd by a 50k gap…..let’s take a closer look at that shall we then? What it tells me is that when we had anything even close to the same numbers you couldn’t accomplish anything. However, you sure kicked our kitten at PVDoor over the week to accumulate that 50k. GoM is doing a bang up job facing off against servers that probably come pretty close to zerg and coverage this week though….oh wait that’s a MINUS 34 rank drop currently. My bad I thought it was gain lol….good job though you are doing wonderful.
You guys are aware that GoM wasn’t in the fight when you were fighting SF right? I know all your skilled and super duper fighters are probably so focused on taking Umber that you aren’t really sure who you are fighting every week. But at least try to make some sense.
It has pretty much been said; why I love NSP and why I’ve stayed here for so long.
We have certain players and guilds consistantly in WvW. You see the same tags over and over again, because the players and guilds are dedicated.
Outmanned? Doesn’t matter
65 PPT? Let’s fix it.
Coverage? Not much, but we’ll still have fun.We are probably one of the highest skilled servers as far as individual player skill goes. We have proven that time and time again. Every week since the match-up randomization started, we have gained points. Not just a little bit, but a lot.
We beat SF, who destroyed us a few weeks prior. We keep at it. Sure we might have lost a few guilds, but that doesn’t matter. Let them leave. The ones who stay are the ones that matter. We’re still strong. We are not giving up.
And why the hell would we?
Not trying to be rude or anything, i know it is a 3 way match up and you are a server down on your luck. So you take your achievements where you can get them. But saying you beat SF? Come on. You came in second by 50k points. That shows that you both at the mercy of the third server. When you lose by that much it is the largest server who decides who comes in 2nd and 3rd, by who they focus. Unless ofcourse you were ok with being crushed and just decided to play for second.
You have also had favorable rolls in every match up so far. That is to say you have been the lowest rank server in your match up everytime. Meaning it sucks because you will probably lose, but you have to do the least to score. Just show up and dont get completely shut out and you will get points. Because being last there is no server you have to beat by so much to score. Which both the second and first team have to deal with.

What gets me is they changed retaliation and condition damage and confusion to be less powerful then they were originally, those things were the best defense imo against this sortof thing, it and the addition of the balance to the PVP traits for every class made it possible for more builds to be available in PVP and kept the burst DPS tendency from taking over. Now not so much. I think it’s starting to backfire on them.
I dont think retal and confusion really did all that much to stop the stealth stomp. Maybe im missing something.
