The only thing fast paced about the combat is the movement. Well and a thief. But they have the energy mechanic.
I don’t need to think how to play anymore; it all goes automatically
I don’t understand why some people call this game boring.
Edited for the part that made me giggle.
Well first off, you’re misquoting. Those references aren’t related to what you are talking about.
Same for Mr. O’Brien. In that statement, he is referring to a gear treadmill. You don’t have to grind for higher stats over and over like other MMOs. There is no new tier every few months to make yours obsolete, making you have to grind out a new set just to be able to do new content.
Just taking this part since i thought it was sort of misleading. There is no new content that would validate having a new set of gear. Everything that has been added is a world event driven piece of temporary content. In no mmo i have ever played have you had to grind out gear to do world events that were intended to be done by everyone. So really this isnt anything new or different. Pretty standard actually.
And then there are fractals. Which do involve grinding and the need for better gear. Again, fairly standard.
The difference here is that their focus has been on the world events, not the typical dungeon farm mindset of precious mmos.
It is what it is. But not really different.
Lots of molds were broken but the biggest of all of them was the idea that not every other player in PvE always needs to be competing with you. The idea that everyone has their own crafting nodes, you can’t tag mobs, that you share in reward and experience makes this is a very different leveling experience from other games. The downed state and that everyone can rez makes it a differnt experience.
And it’s a non-linear leveling experience. This quest hub, that quest hub, this quest hub is gone. It feels more organic.
It’s easy to forget after you’ve played it a while how different it really is…but that doesn’t change that it is different.
I have seen lots of these things in of other games. GW2 pulled them all together and polished them. Something I feel was very similar to what WoW did its time. Didn’t reinvent the wheel or anything, just pulled lots of good ideas from different places and put them under one roof and did it better then those that came before did.
The leveling is sort of non-linear in the fact that if you out level an area, you can go level anywhere in that area. But if you are the right level for an area, it is still linear you just don’t have to go pick up a bunch of quest. It does feel much more natural that way.
It is strange I use to feel like this. But oddly enough the longer you play the more you notice that there weren’t really all that many molds broken at all.
Nice video. Love seeing thief videos that aren’t just hey look how fast I kill people.
Now not trying to be a kitten here because you are clearly a much better thief then I will ever be, but as I watched I kept waiting for the big reveal. Haha! This is how we support! Moment. It never came.
Watching the video I got stealth people in, do what a thief does in larger fights, stealth people out. Tada! Support! Floating around the edges of combat looking for burst targets, stealth stomps, stealth res. I know these things help, but really that is what a thief is in group play, not because you are support, but because anything else gets you killed.
Now I’m sure an army of skilled thieves will descend and tell me how wrong I am. Hopefully they bring more good videos.
Well at least they continue the fine trend of making armor I don’t have any desire to pay for. It is strange they can make weapons I would willing pay for, but refuse to gamble for. But can’t seem to make a decent set of armor.
I still have never seen a server that is obsessed with umber like NSP is!
They are certainly not what they once were. So if you are looking for a home, and need a good server being shunned by the transfer gods at the moment, NSP would great choice. Or if you just really like umber.
People saying “it doesnt make up for this or that etc..” Really? It’s more than most other companies do. It’s something small and shows they care for the customers. It’s a very good move from them. No one is making you buy gems anyway.
It is a nice gesture. And it is silly of people to be complaining about it. But I do take issue with the more then most companies do. Because frankly I can’t recall a mmo I ever played that at some point did not give something away just as a thank you.
Cool idea. Nice surprise for some.
If only there was a game i could play with a whole bunch of other people all by myself. Then we would all agree with me.
You guys should recruit from within. There seems to be a lot of pve players in GoM.
They did recruit from within. They got me. They swore never again.
When the system give most of us the most balanced matchup, meaning facing the same servers for the 14th week, people say the game is stale.
When the system add randomness and as a result some matchup will be unbalanced (server population is unbalanced inherently), people say the game is unbalanced and can’t see why randomness is introduced.
With the server population stabilized at this stage, you simply can’t have both (balanced & frequent server rotation)
So what actually do you want? You have to pick one.
And who said WvW matchups have to be balanced in the first place?
gotta say, i’d rather have the random matchups.
i see it as a chance for all of us getting more variety.yes it will be very unbalanced for some weeks, but i think anet is trying to think ahead….(or that’s maybe how i see it atm)
let’s say a tier 1 or 2 server keeps getting matched up with lower servers over and over and the fights are getting boring, a lot of guilds will switch servers once in a while to find a better match up. they will move back for another match up, but let’s face it, most of the people want to transfer to a higher tier and now we are stuck with monsterservers, then a bunch of tier 3 servers and a ton of extremely underpopulated servers.
with this change we might get a chance to slowly adjust that coverage problem.and they also are trying to work on new stuff for wvw, so maybe those future changes will make it not such a number based thing. we will see.
This is what we can hope will happen. But people like to win, so the other might happen, more people might move to the servers more likely to win. Since now with the random roll you are just as likely to get rolled even if you had a somewhat fair and balanced tier. And I think most agree it is more fun to be bored winning then be bored losing.
Have fun. Having played BP for weeks on end a not winning much, I can safely say they are all kittens and they suck!!
I kid, I kid! Much respect to the BPs of wvw world that have put in the time and worked their way up the brackets as best they could slugging it out along the way.
Oddly enough someone just mentioned it in another thread

You might also look up “Combat Mode”, which is a key binding plugin – while not endorsed by Arenanet, it doesn’t violate the “1 click = 1 click” rule, it adds a key that engages something akin to “shooter mode” in Star Trek Online (Or the entire game in Mass Effect 2/3), so you don’t have to click and drag the screen, instead moving your mouse aims and the reticle is fixed centre screen, this frees up the scroll-wheel and mouse buttons for key bindings that are traditionally required to orientate the camera and gives the game a much more responsive shootery feel
+1 for Combat Mode. I use it everyday and love it. This is the version I use. He did a great job on it! http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/16pi2d/yet_another_combat_mode_4_guildwars_2_11/
I’m on a full server and have the unmanned buff in Eternal Battlegrounds on a Sunday night. That’s the newest change I’ve seen so far.
Unmanned buff. Hehe that’s funny. I’ve had a couple good mesmers and an engineer do that to me. They were really good.
Any way it is wvw the Zerg is always going to be part of it.
Half measures usually end up with the player character lying in a pool of their own blood, so it’s probably a good idea to pick a direction for your character.
Unless you are a guardian. Then by all means dps/tank/ healer it is.
While I do think combat in gw2 does get stale after a while, I don’t think turning it into another game is the answer. While I do also prefer the combat in Tera and neverwinter, guild wars 2 is guild wars 2. I would like to see more skill options. And maybe some depth added. I would also love some consistent game design decisions. For example some skills can be used without a target, some can’t. There are a couple that can be used in the air, most can’t.
Also I do believe there is a mod out there that will give you control you are looking for. It has been a long time since I have heard it mentioned so I have no idea if it works or is allowed.
SoR’s community really isn’t all that great, you don’t want to transfer here.
I hear the community’s on BG and TC are wonderful, those would be better options.
Don’t let them lie to you. I heard they give a legendary to each new transfer into wvw. And if you can draw a picture of the presidents face using rams in smc they will come to your house and give you a kitten.
What? I read heard it on the Internet, it has to be true!
Sounds like the land of sunshine and butterflies!! Let us all move to SoR!
No. In most games I have played when a dr came in it was because 1 person could stun lock you for a size able length of time. Here as the op pointed out it takes a group of people working together. That is sort of the point of the game I believe.
Also remember the new and improved wexp! It isn’t just about ease! Now it is also about speed! Sure it is easy to take that un defended tower with 5-10 people, but do it slow when your tower can just be a speed bump in the Zerg wexp train!
would be a better match up if GoM would stop hiding in their towers with stupid amounts of siege just to camp a spawn
Actually part of the reason I left eb earlier. Was fighting out back of kitteneep I think it was. They were making a good push. Killing some of us we were trying to push back and we start getting arrow fire and cannon fire helping us. I mean I know it is wvw, but come on have some class people. The 5-10 people pushing up from thier spawn, that much of a threat? Go shoot rabbits or something with the cannons. You want to siege it up? Let the break outs go off, give them 15-20 mins to do something with a camp then go run them down. Siege your heart out.
I think I’m just getting soft in my old age. Or never having been all that good at pvp, I get killed a bunch, so getting pointlessly killed by siege for no effin reason would drive me nuts!
Edits ill never figure out this filter.
Just a week to take a break. No insult meant to the servers we face, if you don’t have the people you don’t have the people. Poked my head in today but spawn camping ain’t my thing.
Sort of embarrassed really. I left my favorite map of eb to poke around in a border land because we were happy spawn camping and killing break out events as they happened. Just bad form in my book. I thought it was crappy when kain did it to us, pretty crappy when we do it. Is what it is, and I’m not trying to call anyone out, or tell them how to play. It is wvw everyone has their own rules for it, I know everyone wants rating points for the server and wxp and what not.
Anywho good week for a break not that I’ve been playing a whole lot but this really isn’t fun. PoE here I come!
Are you still running dual pistols on your thief? We need to have a gunslinger duel sometime, even if it means going into the training area (aka spvp) to do so. I wish ANet would put in a system to let you duel your own server-mates without having to play on dumbed down builds. :P
I would like to because I really like the idea of p/p but most the times I end up with a sb instead since it is so much more useful in defense (clusterbomb spam ftw! might be just a little overpowered at times) and I get tired of switching. I tried sb-p/p for a while but it turns out that I can’t stay away from s/d. The things you can do with it are to much fun. Eat flanking strike spam you silly boon stacking guardian scum!!! What?
So p/p or the shortbow end up being the off set just used to shoot at people running away… Or more often then not, shoot at people as I run away…
Hey friends, here is some footage of Purimm and I, this time from my (guardian) point of view. The skill level of the smaller groups in this tier has been higher so nothing too jaw dropping.
Is it bad that every video posted I breathe a sigh of relief when it’s over and I realize I was not in it getting embarrassed? =P
its not fun unless you are getting embarrassed.. I do it all the time
No one should feel embarrassed, these are more like highlight reels. I said before we fail more often than we win (nature of the game currently, 3 should always beat 2). In fact some of those in the clips probably remember beating us a dozen times before we managed to pull off a win.
Agreed. Instead of feeling embarrassed, just watch how you were beaten and learn from it. If you do something REALLY stupid, then laugh about it. It’s a game, after all.
And above all, be thankful you’re not this poor guy:
http://youtu.be/9EOyepvfMBE(note: he was probably just lagging, but it made for such a great video)
I would like to laugh because it is funny, but running with withdraw and roll for initiative i have lost count of the number of times i have back flipped away from something just to find myself falling to my death. Hell ive even done it after i downed someone.
I’ve never really understood this so much. Everyone talks about tactics and common sense. The commanders aren’t the only ones who need it. The cattle need it too. As a non commander I use my strategic common sense and don’t follow the crappy commanders. Not that I have seen any I would not follow lately but there have been some.
Think of these bad commanders as helping you. They are leading the band of people not smart enough to not follow a horrible commander. They probably don’t have any supplies and just press 1 a bunch.
I don’t know that you are are always outmanned, for example in that screenie you posted…
But I know what ya mean. Has happened a lot to me. If it is that bad go to other borderland/eb. If it is that bad 2 days in a row just take a week off.
I would also say it looks like at some point everyone was on some sort of initiative system, look at them spam those skills! Although maybe they knew firing of a skill and waiting on a cooldown was boring, so they hid that part.
Every morning, I wake up and GoM overruns us. but I guess in the morning is the only time they can have a chance to catch up, so I can’t be too mad.
Oddly enough, Every afternoon when I log off, DH over runs us, heck NSP was even out scoring DH. But I guess the evening/night is the only time they have a chance against us, so i guess I cant be to mad.
You get us in the morning, and then from the afternoon onwards we destroy you guys…. is what you’re saying right?
Actually what i was trying to say, is usually people who are losing complain about coverage. I think this might be the first time i have seen someone who is winning come in and cry about coverage.
Every morning, I wake up and GoM overruns us. but I guess in the morning is the only time they can have a chance to catch up, so I can’t be too mad.

To sum up yes, I’m stalking him.
Thieves never really bothered me much. Sure they kill me, all the time actually,, but not really ever when I’m doing anything. Maybe strolling across a field, running down a road or just goofing around. I can’t remember the last time I was I any sort of important battle with more then 3 people and was like oh wow that stealth thief on their side is an unstoppable beast!
And really from my experience with stealth classes people have problems with them because they don’t think like them. They are just busy running down the middle of roads and assuming if you can no longer see it, it must not be there.
Thieves don’t appear to be a big force in large fight because most thieves suck and the good ones don’t really give you much to see. In battles more than 3 people the thief just blends in more and more with their incredible battle mobility unless doing extremely basic, and thus less effective, tactics.
Kind of proves my point right here. Thieves don’t appear to be in big fights. It is almost like if people can’t see them they choose to pretend they aren’t there. Tends to get them killed a bunch.
And really I wasn’t saying thieves aren’t in big battles. I normally run a staff ele when I’m not thieving the day away, standing at the back I am always looking for thieves. the ever popular heartseeker is one of the most obvious animations in the game, as is the thief shortbow shot, unload seems to be making a comeback, saw 2 today wtf?? What I was saying is that in those big fights the thief normally isn’t I huge threat, killing one person at a time and then hiding for awhile before killing another just isn’t that big a deal in large fights when there are classes downing 3-4 people at a time.
And before anyone wants to chime in with,we’ll that is just Zerg v Zerg it doesn’t matter, this is wvw after all, it is Zerg v Zerg.
Now what I will agree is way annoying is organized groups with a thief or 2 a Mesmer or 2 and an d/d ele. They make me want to kick a kitten.
Guardian is nice. And if you are normally running with a group or in a zerg a staff ele is nice. Since with a staff you will mostly be hiding in the back so it is easy to see what is going on and know when to run and leave your friends to die. Although the ele can be tricky as you level if you are alone. Which you probably are since you were having issue with the thief. So never mind. Go make a big strong guardian and self heal yourself to glory!
Although this is just my general experience from world v world and open world pve.
(edited by Wryscher.1432)
In the years of world pvp and sort of world pvp (wintergrasp anyone?) i can say i feel there is no fix for this, but winning. The diehards are there no matter what, the others they show up when you win.
You lose they stop showing up. After many server transfers and watching it happen again and again, once a side starts consistently losing the people who are just playing for rewards or just killing time stop showing up. They transfer, they faction change, they roll defiant, they get black wings.
Dont get me wrong im all for rewards, they help get new people to give it a look and those who might be bored a reason to poke in. But just trying to come up with some sort of gimmick reward gets people there for the wrong reason.
I would go as far to say p/p is really good in wvw in small groups. Mostly because a large portion of the wvw player base seems to have no idea what a dodge is. And that to me is the only problem with unload, it cost a bunch and is a long strung out attack, easy countered, and messed a lot in large group simply because your target stepped behind someone else.
BUT the damage on it can be huge. Maybe it is just because there aren’t many out there, so people dont see it coming. but I usually switch to p/p when I get them to around 50% health for a ‘surprise’ and unless they are the tankiest build 1-2 unloads is usually more then enough to kill them.
To sum up yes, I’m stalking him.

wvw was boring so we made a video
i think someone has to much free time… =P
Ooops. And ty.
But seriously guys…rob is still inside your SM…
I wonder if I can solo it..
You are a pink haired guardian, what are you going to do? Boon the walls down?
Hey all, normally don’t post but figured I’d share a new small man vid – me and a few other SPCA (with an appearance by Dravul) had alot of fun early Sunday morning.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpsBks7qXzw
I’m not sure if I am more impressed with you guys or the fact that everyone chased you so long. I’m typically of the mind, if there is a zerg chasing someone and they aren’t dying it is much safer to go do something else. But I am a sissy =(
Some of the boredom from me comes from the way the weapon sets were set up. This is the range set. This is you mid range set. This is your melee set. This is your condition set. This is you AOE set.
I know some classes have more of one and less of another, but there needs to be more of across all classes.
I’ve often wondered if anyone got a good talking to for the decision not to include mounts, even non speed increasing ones. I would think as far as the money market goes mounts for cash and random drops in lock boxes are mad cash.
But maybe the is just my personal preference coming through, never really minded dropping cash on a cool looking mount.
I just gotta say..no one said they were gonna be buffs :/ Change is not always a buff, just look at kit refinement.
True, but change = something new. I’ve been itching for new stuff in the meta. It feels like it has been the same it seems like for ages.
Change does not really mean new. Oh when you got a target to 50 percent health you got fury for 5 seconds? Now you get it for 2 seconds.
Change. Not new. The way the past patches have gone after the hype they received, this is what I expect.
Hope everyone is having fun out there. Been feeling kind of meh about wvw so havent been playing as much, but! that just gives me more time to investigate(I wanted to put another word here but it always gets my post deleted!) the forums. So I have stolen some funny videos from other servers matchup threads! don’t tell them!
they are all pretty short. well the last one is a little longer, it seems it takes awhile to walk anywhere. happy hunting!
Ok its like beating a dead horse, but Anet should have limited the amount of ppl per server a lot more harshly. The fact that people stack the T1 servers is the reason you are experiencing this.
Honestly Ive had it happen on Gates of Madness in T8 at umber of all places. Happens lots of times there is a decent sized fight in sm or one of the keeps. So anyone who only says it happens in the upper tiers is crazy.
Might not happen as often but it does happen.
Occasionally when I quickly switch targets and cast something, the last target will still be the focus target for that one attack. To be clear, I’m talking about auto attacking a mob (A), then pressing tab (or click) followed by something like pressing 2 (which interrupts auto attack), then 3 (which is queued after 2), where 2 will hit mob A and 3 will hit mob B, even though mob B was the selected target when originally pressing 2. Could be a bug, maybe a feature (ie, to catch accidental miss-targets) or perhaps there’s a small lag behind the interface when switching targets.
This happens to me all the time, and drives me crazy. You switch targets, you know you switched targets because the nifty little picture changed targets, press your next attack and goodie! It went to last target! It makes it fun when trying to quickly change targets for a gap closer or opener.
I mostly went p/p+ sb for leveling. p/p #3 gives you plenty of burst on single mobs to kill them quickly and short bow #2 is a near spammable aoe for group situations. just have to be careful with autoattack since it bounces and can be bad in tight situations.
Add in a health dose of running in circles and kiting and off you go.
I apologize to the NSP at GoM briar right now, i was stuck in the wall after commander “chuck norris” siegerazer pulled me into it and was stuck in combat. Me no hack i promise =o
Obviously you are hacking. Your necro has less health then my thief! I didn’t even know that was possible! Eat your spinach you undead lovin phreak!
I never thought I would see visceral game play followed by teleport kiting, and bunkering down. Two things that scream visceral in everyone’s mind I’m sure.
Anyway back to the op, I understand what you are trying to say about all the classes feeling the same. To me It is because the classes have no roles. So everyone needs a the same things. Yes your gap closer might be a teleport/a jump/a stealth/a stun/a chill/an immobilize and sure when you do them they play different, but after awhile it all feels the same.
And since you have all your skills by like level 30 you will have plenty of time to get really bored if them.
I’ve been trying to play this game for almost 3 weeks now, but I’ve had an incredible amount of trouble trying to choose a prof (I’ve played them all to lvl 15+, and some pvp) in that time, not because I like them all, but rather because none of them jump out at me as something I could play for hours on end.
The ultra-customizable skill system from the original guild wars drew me back to that game time and time again. That said, I actually really enjoy the main 5 skills being tied to your weapon. It allows you to better kitten how people are going to play against you in pvp, makes the weapon you have equipped feel more than just a stat stick, and feels awesome when you quick switch to another set for a few key skills in the nick of time. Most of the weapon skills feel pretty darn good (notable exceptions including almost every necro weapon, and engi rifle).
Utility skills on the other hand generally do not feel very good. Probably about half or more of the utilities are glyphs, banners, shouts, moving your pet around, conjures (gimmicks) etc. While the existing ones obviously influence and enhance your gameplay, I can’t help but feel the 5 skills we get to choose need to be big, visceral, neat abilities! No matter what profession I pick up, I have no interest in at least half of the utilities, not because they’re ineffectual but because they feel like bland filler.
Elite skills suffer from a different set of problems. The majority of them do not synergize with or enhance your “goal” in what you do. 4 professions have 2 out of 3 elite skills that change your skill bar entirely. Elite skills that add utility in this way are definately cool, but this is way, way overdone. Most of the time it feels as though you’ve built your character for some specific purpose plotting out your stats/gear/skill combos, and then your biggest baddest move has very little to do with it. It almost feels like getting inside of a vehicle in WoW. PS: Why no elite skill capping/more elite skills? Exploring the world and pushing progression to snag that next elite skill to play around with was super ultra mega fun.
So there you have it, my experience thus far.
tl;dr: utilities and elites feel terrible
Never having played gw1 I can not compare. But share your feelings on the classes. You can find some enjoyment in them but at the end of the day they all sort of end up feeling bland and boring.
I’m gonna do some dps. I’m gonna dodge. Gonna press my 2-3 second condition. Gonna press my heal. Gonna start all over. Yes I realize this is grossly simplified and to be above average you need to throw in some combo love, but really most the classes end up feeling so boring after a bit, mostly that feels pointless.
To sum up, not enough weapon sets, or weapon sets are so specialized that you only have 1 choice in a given situation. Not enough good utility skills. Elites are with some exceptions mostly not all that elite.
While people are dueling 1v1 in some remote corner of the map, being all skilly and stuff, the rest of us are working as teams and actually creating differences in the scoreboards.
There are no substantial rewards for 1v1 fighting, so it really doesn’t matter if the classes are perfectly balanced.
You did notice there is no substantial rewards for working as a team and actually creating differences in the scoreboard, didn’t you?
