Great guide. An addition of when to use non-traited wardens would be great. I know some of them but not all.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
haha
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
This thread just proves the poor state the Mesmer class is in now, especially in wvw zergs.
Anet – revert Blinding Befuddlement, make Glamour builds work viable again.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I find Rangers fairly strong in sPvP now.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |

Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Warriors are fine.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Again Strength but if you can’t afford those, go with Runes of the Ranger for reflects. They are also dirt cheap. I wouldn’t use Travelers for Fractals/Dungeons.
I wouldn’t use Ranger for WvW though.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Don’t forget Runes of the Ranger.

I tried it. it’s a lot of fun but if you’re fighting a condie class that is halfway decent, you’re often going to die due to no condie cleanse.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Add 25% Passive Swiftness to Decoy. 25% Swiftness stops when Decoy is used.
-You have to choose to blow your Decoy for swiftness or not.
-Mesmers already have a lot of movement in combat so using Decoy would ensure that they don’t always have increased speed in combat.
-Speed is really needed in WvW/PvP more than PvE. Dungeons don’t really require speed. You can still use Travelers runes or Focus if needed.
-Adding Swiftness to Signet of Inspiration makes that signet mandatory for WvW when it is only useful with certain builds. I bet Decoy is used more often than SoI is.
I can’t think of a better ability to tie 25% swiftness to other than Decoy.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Bug fixes cost 200 gems on the gem store now.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Does this work in small party WvW or if not, what would you change?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Sword. Then 2nd sword. Focus. Pistol. Greatsword.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
A lot of you guys are missing the point that I may have failed to make. Kadj’s post nailed my thoughts right on the head.
First off, I don’t believe Thieves should have a passive speed boost. With the stealth and versatile mobility, the 25% speed boost is icing on the cake. Speed boost, imp, should be for the classes with kitten poor manoeuvrability – i.e. Necomancers can justify their passive speed.
Secondly, if everyone moves 25% faster, what’s the point having speed boosts anyways? We’d all be moving at the same speed relative to each other then. There should be clear trade-offs and when that occurs, you see build diversity – a good indicator of balance.
Third, you pretend you can’t chase. I can give you that, to an extent. However, blinks, clone passive speed trait, sword #2 (immobility, yes bugged at times sure), GS #4, Curtain, Daze, Torment and Confusion (for those pesky Thief heartseeker spam escape) are ways to catch or even punish fleeing enemies if you all weren’t so close minded in one certain playstyle.
tl;dr: Main points are thieve’s shouldn’t have the passive speed boost (subtle Thief QQ) and Mesmers shouldn’t be homogenized because “other classes have shiny boosts, why not us”
We are talking out-of-combat speed not in combat.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I hear ya.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I wasn’t referring to using PU in Tourney/tpvp. It’s even more useless from a team perspective there.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Mesmers definitely need a run speed utility/trait and to think any differently is ignorant. Proposing that we ‘give up’ run speed so that we can get bug fixes is just stupid. Maybe Mesmers shouldn’t get gold/karma/xp so Anet can fix Mesmer bug fixes faster?
Being stuck using Traveler/Centaur/Speed (ick) runes severely limits the classes’ potential.
The run speed issue and Mesmer bugs are not related and giving up one to fix the other is daft.
Wow.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
There would be less PU Mesmers if there were other viable Mesmer builds that were on par with other classes’ viable builds.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
4/4/0/0/6 boon stripping shatter works pretty well.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Oh look! Hobbits!
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Since the patch, my dodge clones often sit there and do nothing. Nothing!
/sigh
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
So what would be a good zwvw build in ur opinion?
dont play a mesmer.
This.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Confirmed.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
“Phantasmal Warden: Fixed a bug that caused this skill to go on cooldown without being cast. Fixed an issue in which the warden would be in range of an enemy but not begin attacking.”
Broken in November 2013 patch and still not fixed. When spawned, iWarden still stands there and does nothing 1/3 of the time.
Clones created by Deceptive Evasion: If I dodge, the clones created by DE often just stand there and won’t attack any target.
“Illusionary Elasticity: I’ll have this looked at again”
Still does not work for clones.
Triumphant Distortion has a 10s ICD, but was communicated by Anet in a pre-patch ready-up episode that the trait would not have an ICD.
Clones don’t copy towns clothes of the Mesmer when the Mesmer is wearing outfits.
Anet – any ETA or info that you can provide the Mesmer community regarding these issues?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Why Runes of the Mesmer in a shatter build?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Centaur Runes + Mantra of Recovery + Exotic Potion = Swiftness
Why waste your heal?
But I agree, Mesmers need a utility that grants swiftness.

Just to add, doing an emote like /sleep got me unstuck but of course, you can’t do that in combat.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Anet please fix these bugs, they have been going on for months and months now.
Often when I use Phase Retreat, I get stuck and cannot move. Weapon swapping, dodging, waypointing, blinking or phase retreating again won’t get me unstuck.
I either have to get downed, dead or leave the map to get unstuck.
I know this happens to other classes that have similar teleport skills.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Osi, what Dire pieces did you choose? Gloves & Boots?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Phants with reflects.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I’m thinking that Anet will never ‘fix’ it because in doing so it would be OP.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Scholar – if your party is providing you Might and you can stay above 90% HP. The 10% bonus doesn’t affect Phantasms.
Runes of Strength – If you can’t get reliable might from someone else. Expensive now. These are my general go-to runes.
Runes of the Ranger – Alternative to the all Assassin’s gear build for reflects. Zerker gear + Ranger runes are a great combo.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I would just like to add Balthazar Nade Engies can be just as bad or worse.
Edit: I also miss Traveler’s runes.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I conducted a poll and the results are thieves are the most hated profession in the game.
And now you know.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Ah yes, you are correct. I guess another reason to not use focus in wvw for me.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I wouldn’t use a torch and a focus in the same build. In my opinion, focus isn’t that great for WvW but if you were to use it, I would use with Hoelbrak Runes (might on interrupt). I prefer Traveler’s runes for most of my WvW builds but some builds are really based upon the runes that you choose.
Check some of the build threads here and watch some vids to see the style that you like then design around that.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I haven’t followed the last few tournaments but historically Mesmers weren’t really wanted or needed in tournament pvp either.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Torch is a great weapon for Mesmer PU builds, which can be condition or power based.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
What Pyro said.
Every class has their own ‘OP’ build that works best for the situation, especially since Anet has been nerfing our typical shatter and glamour builds and pushing us into PU and phantasm builds.
Blame Anet.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Are you talking WvW or PvE? If PvE, torch is bad except to switch to avoid trash mobs like in Arah. I wouldn’t use Scholar in WvW either.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Why 30 in Dom? Reflect damage is based on precision.
edit: Nevermind, Empowering Mantras. Right.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Pack aren’t bad especially for WvW where the swiftness duration may come in handy. I believe the top runes for PvE are Scholar (if your party can provide you might stacks and you can stay about 90% HP most of the time), Strength Runes if your party doesn’t provide might and Ranger Runes for reflect damage.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Not too bad of a trait. Just a pointer for you, you tend to drop your chaos storm too early and waste it. You should really drop it on both yourself and your target when in melee range.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
When I fight a boss where reflects are needed, I also make sure I go x/6/x/4/x minimum. 6 points in dueling buffs your precision and ultimately your reflect damage from Feedback.
Berserker + Runes of the Ranger are my preference over all Assassin’s.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I think I have seen this thread before.
I know how it turns out.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Osi, other than your underwater weapon, what weapon did you choose to put your condition stacking sigil on then swap out after 25 stacks?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Since Torment Sigils don’t exist in tPvP, what sigils do you suggest would be a good replacement?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
or 25% passive speed on Decoy
