Here’s something funny, blizzard who also has the development speed of molasses, tells their customers a whole year before an expansion release what’s coming in the expansion. Followed by interviews, patch notes, 6+ months of beta testing, more forums posts etc. While blizzard is not the best developer anymore, they at least spend a lot of time communicating to their customers, and it’s not just “developers”, every single week for the past 10 years they’ve had a ton of blue replies.

Do things change in development? sure all the time and we know that, love them or hate them, blizzard lets you know what’s going on with their game. It would be easier to swallow changes when an anet rep talks to us about stuff more frequently, rather than coming in after 6 months of complete silence on a subject. Some stuff get release without any input from us. The april feature patch certainly contained a lot of stuff that we never thought was being worked on, something like megaservers almost got no feedback because you were ready just to implement it without even asking us what we thought about it, we could have shed some light on some of it’s problems.

Arenanets problem is their lack of proper communication with their customers, you don’t always have to talk about the big future road plans only, the little stuff can use some answers too. Why does the wvw forums see like 1 reply every 8 or more weeks? Is it really too much to ask to get even one part time community manger for wvw? Can Devon really not spare 30 mins a day to read the wvw front page and give some quick answers to stuff that might be hot topics?

Start talking to your customers more frequently, I really don’t think even taking one day to answer a grab bag of questions for the week is too much to ask.

Do you seriously believe any havoc group leader is going to pop a commander tag at all, let alone a “havoc” specific one?

We have enough cross server spies map-watching the commander tags, no havoc leader is going to give away his position like that.

In that case might as well just have 1 tag on the map anyways if you’re so worried about spies, so the colored tags are… pointless.

Only thing this will change is if more than 1 ppt guild or pugmander is on the map. Fight guilds don’t run tags because they don’t want the extra numbers or outsiders on them, that’s not going to change until they do guild only tags, which will probably never happen now.

Main pugmanders or guilds should run blue and purple tags, red should be for tracking enemy groups by the scouts, and yellow for havok teams. Which comes down to only being useful to commanders to track movements on the map, everyone else will go back to joining /squad to avoid confusion anyways.

I don’t have my bags open in the middle of the screen, but off to the right side of the screen after years of having it that way in everquest and wow, plus easier equipment swapping. My bag screen is resized so don’t have to scroll either.

HUH? Siege Disabler that disables enemy siege

I would think this is triggered when siege is present near the trap, not people, otherwise it would be pointless. People can just run over it and trigger it without siege around.

For the people demanding an explanation, they have a blog named Tricks and Explosive Finales on Aug19th. Not that I agree with the day by day blog crap they’re pulling for the next three weeks, but it’s kinda obviously where they are going to explain this.

The only 3 things I really want to see this working on is golems, rams, catas.

Edit: Just watched the video, it’s not a traditional trap, it’s a grenade.

‘Explosive finales’, I think ‘finale’ is the important word there. Either they’re gonna spice up WvW scoring system to allow comebacks or they’ll give us a new gamemode/revise the scoring system in conquest. As much as it is fun to play conquest, it suffers from snowballing and it’s just not fun to watch as a spectator.

Or it could mean blast finishers will get new animations. XP
Would be nice if they finally tweaked the wvw scoring system.

Don’t run them into deathtraps.
Make sure you know what you’re gonna do is gonna be succesfull,dont keep trying things that keep failing over and over.
Dont be a kittenbag.
If something goes wrong,blame yourself not the people ( unless it’s Really their fault..not stacking,not listening etc ) In Which case,explain what went wrong and explain how they could improve it next time.
Before you move out,explain what you expect from the people following you.
Show them you know your stuff.
Make use of the terrain when fighting zergs.
Dont go head on in another zerg,use tactics. ( Ports,veils,flanking,fake moves,act like you’re running away..Let a mesmer throw a veil and turn around )
Make sure people have fun,dont be overly serious,it’s still just a game.
If you use TS…dont scream…dont talk like you’re an auctioneer ( It’s just annoying for others,and it’s not needed )..be calm and collective.
Dont complain about other commanders,offer help instead.
Keep asking for reports. ( zerg locations )
Keep asking for people to defend camps.
Keep asking for people to refresh sieges and to scout towers
Best one…NEVER RAGE,whatever happens.

Nice post, pretty much all this.

If you’re just starting out, start out small and take smaller easier objectives regularly, keep your players engaged and rewarded, you can be reckless at the end of your run, maybe make an attempt on a tough structure to take.

If your pugs are messing up, then be reasonable on this, just because you made it through a choke that had 6 acs on it and you survived by popping all your survival skills doesn’t mean everyone else can. Make suggestions on improvements and move on, yelling and screaming does nothing for them and more than likely they will drop you to do something else. Always remember you may have pve players in your pugs and they may not be use to the wvw environment as yet.

To earn respect you have to give respect.

Lastly, have patience, lots and lots of it. XD

Indeed, but there are times when I want to be able to read squad chat, but also know where the rest of the commanders are as well!

I don’t remember the last time a commander I followed used squad chat XD
I suppose it would be useful for commanders seeing the other colors and knowing who’s running them.

Unless the new tag colors come with the restrictions that people have been asking for, you know like, blue means all can see good for pugmander (red for all to see as well but use it to track enemy groups), yellow for only guild members can see, purple for only group members can see, then they will be pretty useless as before. If it’s just color changes then also you give people less reason to join a squad.

I like the skins, what I don’t like is that every single weapon shape looks like a common low level weapon designs. How about dropping these skins on the ascended or exotic weapon designs? Even the zodiacs had unique designs with their skins.
Why does the staff look almost exactly like the long spear? Staffs are usually badly proportioned and badly designed in this game, but that’s just taking it to a new low.

Having lag issues?

I just logged into the map, first time since wed, and wow the lag in there is worse than the lag in stonemist castle ever was. A good 10-15 secs of everything just pausing on the screen. And yes everyone in my map was experiencing the lag.

I hate to be the one that has to say this, but to the people who are thinking about joining EPiC, really should not think about it anymore.

The problem with this guild is you’re going to have fun on the raids, something random and goofy is bound to happen at least once, and then when the fights get heavy and the kitten hits the fan, we start melting enemies like… baloney. :P

On a more non serious note…
We’re open to all classes, yes even rangers, we need extra bows and bears for ranger night, although having some extra melee wouldn’t hurt, a couple eles, a mesmer who veils, and a partridge in a pear tree.

We’re not hardcore, we mostly wvw as a guild but can be caught red handed doing other pvx stuff, we’re balanced to taking objectives(ppting), defending, and just plain ole fighting. We would like active players for EU and NA(prime) time zones, our chat is full of 18+ fun(get on TS too!), rep required during wvw raids which is just about every night.

We’re one of the leading guilds in SoS Homeland Security. We have active scouts that help siege and help protect our properties throughout the day, and commanders who havoc or pugmand at times.

So again to the people looking for a home, you really don’t need to look any further and and just apply to EPiC!

Why do you run?

If you don’t know how to handle yourself solo, you are not any good in a group and are getting carried or using superior numbers to have success (or you just run all night).

You don’t have to be “traited for roaming”. Obviously some builds are tailored for group play, but a bad is a bad and they usually run.

You could have all the skill in the world it’s still going to come down to gear and specs. A power well necro has a much less chance of beating a roamer built for soloing than say a condi necro also built to solo.

Go to spvp if you really want even solo or small fights, because there’s nowhere to run in there, and everyone builds their specs for solo fights not massive group fights like wvw.

The real baddies are the ones needing to play thieves hiding behind stealth to take someone out in wvw.

Why would I stick around to fight someone built for roaming, on my group based necro? Thieves, play a cheesy stealth class with cheesy builds and expect people not to run away from them lol. Hell most of the roaming these days is taking on 2-3 guys at a time, you just don’t know it until you get into the fight. If I want roaming 1v1 fights I just go to spvp.

I’m guessing you’ve never stepped into wvw before?

The events for wvw or eotm are usually for capturing an objective like taking a supply camp/check points/tower/keep (towers and keeps require siege and multiple people to take, commanders[blue doritos on the map] will usually drop siege to build). You will get rewarded as long as you get enough damage on the npcs in the area or you stay in the capture ring (which is what happens mostly in eotm). Wvw has more fighting involved as groups there are more willing to fight for the hell of it, and defend areas.

Wvw is not tough to do on an uplevel depending on the class you’re playing and how much you know of wvw, running with a group would be the best thing to do, roamers will probably get creamed just depending on their skill level. And yes eles can do well in there just sit back and throw water heals and aoes. You can also kinda cheat and buy blues or greens off the TP which will scale your 80 stats overboard in some cases.

sPVP is like battlegrounds/arena, gameplay is like arathi basin capture and hold points, but much smaller maps.

Typically red=dead.

Generally I will not interfere with a 1v1 fight if it’s in the middle of nowhere, if they both stopped to fight there then that means they both wanted to fight. I’ll sometimes wait around to see if the ally dies, and then I’ll jump in with fears and res them, if they wanted help they just need to say it on TS.

Its funny though those 1v1 guys want an even fight and will cuss you out because you interfered, but then they will turn around and prey on people who clearly do not want to engage in a 1v1 fight, because guess what more than half the people you will run into in wvw are not specced for roaming but for groups.

To the duelers, respect is a two way street, if you don’t want people jumping into your fights then don’t jump on people who clearly do not want to engage you.

Well you have a couple options here.

As Blackelk stated you can jump into sPVP which won’t give you exp directly for your levels but you can earn tomes of knowledge which gives you a level, and you will be able to enjoy pvping fully with level 80 builds and traits.

Leveling in WvW can be hard or easy depending on what you do, if you’re following a zerg on karma train fridays, it’s easy to get 20+ levels with boosts on, if you’re roaming the exp comes in slower. On an uplevel it’s a bit rougher than before as you have to wait till 30 to start getting traits but you will have all your utility slots unlocked by then. EOTM is the best area to go to if you want to level faster and rewarded better.

Your 3rd option is you can take your regular character and don’t do any pve while your girlfriend is off, go into spvp or wvw/eotm, yes you will be ahead in levels but you get downscaled in pve anyways as you mentioned, but at least you won’t be running through pve maps a second time.

Thinking more on the reflect finisher trap and placing traps on walls, would be neat to place a one time reflect trap on doors or walls and have the first siege damage thrown at it reflect the damage back to the siege weapon. Like the first ram hit would reflect the damage back and hit the ram for 50% then the trap dies, or a catapult having the stone ball reflect back and hit it for 50%.

Some sort of trap that took a large number of people to trigger could be interesting.Say 10 or 15 people to trip it.

They could make master versions of the traps which instead of 1 person triggering it, it requires 5+ or 10+ which would be better on zergs when they clump in the trigger spot.

Here’s my contribution… The Finisher Trap.

For 2 mins after trap deployment (within the large radius of the trap), anyone who completes a finisher will find themselves finished (i.e. hard down) and the subject of their own finisher animation. The original target remains down (soft).

Trap expires automatically after 2mins. No limit to the number of times triggered basically denying finishers from being used for the fight in the area.

Kind of like an area reflect finisher move, nice I like that would be hilarious to use on roamers.

I would go another step and have a trap that lasts for 2 mins with 1200 range, any enemies that goes down within the area is automatically finished with their own finisher. One solution to stop the rallying which people have been complaining about for some time. XD

The chain lightning damage trap sounds interesting.

I think a knock back trap would be funny, especially if it knocked back players up to 600 range in random directions, that would hit a zerg up pretty good. Imagine laying those bad boys near cliffs or on walls.

Is there a "Next Big Thing" for WvW?

I’m sure they are working on a few things for future release, whether or not they want to tell us now is iffy. Since we were all over them about the account rank points for 6 months from when they announced it coming to final release, and to be honest that was because they didn’t say anything in between. Then again you get something like Wow which reveals what’s coming in the next expansion a year away and doesn’t manage to get the backlash anet gets.

We know more wvw abilities are coming, it’s been data mined already, plus if you can earn over 9000 ranks need to fill that up somehow or it’s pointless.

Updated rewards much like eotm is probably in the works since they asked us a little while ago what should be updated from eotm to the old maps.

Commander tags are also on the shelf for change, but seeing as it’s been over a year since players have requested changes to it and 6 months since the cdi, who knows when anything will be done with it since it’s apparently a complicated system.

A new map for wvw would be nice, a new borderland or eternal battleground map which swaps with the old maps every week would be cool. Hell if it’s so much work creating a map, take one of the existing pve maps and turn that into an eternal battleground type map, that would be cool to play on.

Balance for server population, or balance to scoring according to populations would be nice as well but probably won’t happen.

That’s funny cause I’m a necro and don’t think fear is that big of a deal since most times people have stability on and it becomes useless, fear an entire zerg off a cliff, that’s a once in a lifetime thing.

Stealth is still the top thing to nerf imo :P

When is the next CDI?

They had a date for the CDI, maybe they realized it would have been insulting to have a CDI about future tournaments while we still haven’t been given our rewards for this past one (fixed today).

In any case, I think most wvw’er view CDI’s as useless as it seems nothing much has come from them at this point.

What weapon skin are you going to get?

Getting the staff, because frankly 99% of the staffs look like crappy skinny sticks in this game, but this one looks a little decent. Great swords always seem to look great no matter what set it is, and it probably all has to do with the sizing of the weapons and glow effects.

How difficult is it to earn Festival Tokens?

I want to get the Gas Mask Skin and Sclerite Karka Shell but 3200 tokens seems alot.

How much can I expect to earn by playing? Any tips?

I had the same rewards in mind when I started and yeah 3200 did seem like a lot. You get 1600 for completing the meta so that covers one item if you don’t care for the dolyak tonic or panda mini(I didn’t). Get into the gold farming pavilion instances, you can find invites to them in the lfg, I haven’t had that hard of a time finding them. I’ve done 3 good sessions of them(approx 4-6hrs, 4hrs, 2hrs) and farmed another 3500 or so tickets, I’ve got the karka shell, gas mask, and just got the watchknight tonic last night.

Please make WALLET items

The devs have said that they don’t want to clutter the wallet with limited-time currencies that won’t be obtainable or usable most of the time.

It’d be nice if they could implement something like a sub-wallet which would hold them all but be on a separate tab on the wallet window and thus not clutter it or something, but I don’t know how reasonable that would be to code.

The wvw season tickets will be a permanent currency so that can be added to the wallet at the very least.

They have way too many currencies in any case. Need to just use one unified currency for every event(like what karma should have been), that you use to purchase tickets, set different rates for different events if need be.

Why do you need another CDI?

I would guess they want to run these seasons a lot quicker now, last for 4-6 weeks, maybe take a month break in between to let servers settle on ranks and then repeat. They’re expecting almost half the servers to wait over two season sessions to even get one weapon done. So they may want to get season related fixes done quickly.

But yes all those other cdi’s related to wvw got next to nothing done, so why bother. They completely ignored the population cdi and destroyed servers yet again with transfers, free transfers to mid ranked servers, brilliant.

re-releasing items

I don’t mind re-releasing older living story items. Here’s the thing, people want to say they worked so hard for an item why should anyone else get another chance, and yet most times it’s buried collecting dust in their bank. Know how many people I see running around these days with sclerite karka shell, or emissary of the mad king title? next to none.

If they re-release an item and the same effort has to be made to obtain it then hey no harm in that. You’re not the only one that got the item originally at that time anyways, so what does it matter if someone else gets it a year later.

Well congratulations to you, not everyone is fortunate to get into the right overflow of players. Was in there the first two days for a few hours each time, never had more than 2 commanders on, and a bunch of afkers in the middle, never enough to spread for more than two bosses.

Even as simple a method as a gate with red/green particle effect that tells players what boss could use more players would have sufficed. Players need to be told what to do in most cases and no good loot plus confusing victory conditions will make many just not bother.

I am glad that ANet listened to us and made the loot better in the last patch, but the fact still remains that they need to work on directing the players better.

Pretty much, they should have listed the objectives better, and why not list all 6 boss health bars? as I recall they did that for the 3 knights in the LA event. Anet is being just as lazy as the players in this case, if you want to start teaching players to be better and break the zerg mentality which they promoted in the first place, then they need to start giving better instructions.

They could have even setup a gate like have people kill mobs during downtime in the area they want to be in before the boss spawns, the top 10 killers of those mobs spawn by that boss, go down all 6 bosses to spawn players, and then the rest get randomly placed in the areas that still needs players, now go you have 7 mins to kill them.

Please stop this mentality of zerging all content. The Crown Pavillion was not made for that. Is it very difficult for people to realize that? Stop acting like brainless robots who are pressing for 1 auto attack and forget everything else. This kind of attitude is forcing ANET to make the game become a big brainless zerg content. And that’s not fun!

Actually that’s how it was designed the first time around and it was fun for a lot of people, provided a good place for loot and leveling characters. Most other raid type stuff was designed for the zerg, ever since Tequatl they’re been designing more breaking up the zerg content, marionette, wurms, clockwork knights, pavilion.

I know some of you former wow raid guys want the harder stuff, which is why they need to start locking away the more coordinated stuff behind instances instead.

The problem here is Anet has been trying to design open zone raid events that require more communication and co-ordination, which is usually locked away in 10/25/40 man instances (like wow).

They started out designing encounters that needed a zerg to take out, and now they’ve switched and decided they want the zerg to split and work in smaller groups. Meanwhile you’re still pushed into zones with mostly random pugs, especially after the mega server implementation.

Maybe they’re trying to do an open zone version of wow’s LookingForRaid, where it’s made up of 25 pugs, except in wow’s case they make you fight one boss at a time, not six. Maybe next time anet should spawn enough people in certain paths of the pavilion before the event starts, first 10 people that zone in get placed in boss area 1, next 10 spawn in boss area 2, etc.

If they keep up this design trend they will start bringing out the elitist attitude of players, already see it in this thread, is that what we really want?

If you can get rewards in the game then why would you spend $100 a month in the gem store?

I think people including Anet needs to step off this mentality when it comes to rewarding gameplay. How exactly does screwing with reward drops make anyone satisfied enough with the game to want to spend money in the gem store? Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

Shouldn’t they be trying to make players happy enough that they would gladly “donate” money to buy more stuff from the gem store? When the game first came out my plan was to put in $20 every other month and use it to upgrade my account stuff, no different from paying a sub fee, I did it once right after release. But after the black lion chest at halloween con, plans for ascended items, and general lack of decent rewards for pretty much anything in the game, nerf after nerf of farms, I’ve changed my mind and I’ve never sunk another dollar into the game. I wonder how many others are in my shoes with this.

They apparently are only interested in the big fish to pay them for every costume and mini that comes out, but it would be so much better for them if even the average joe was plucking down $20 every other month rather than never(while still getting the big fish). You do that by giving appropriate rewards for the time spent, people are generally happy to walk away with even a bag full of blues and greens. You provide terrible rewards like the pavilion and people are not going to flock to the store to get their convenience and cosmetic items, just gives people another reason not to reward Anet either.

I bet some devs read this thread and have a good laugh.

I had a good laugh actually when one of the anet reps joined in the run we had in the pavilion, they lasted for about two bosses and then left, all the while they heard the complaining from players right next to them.

Just finished it, not worth it, they’ve destroyed another place to have some fun. When are the Anet devs going to wake up and understand that it’s “ok” to give decent rewards. They took out all the chest, have to kill the 6 bosses before getting 1 chest, which gave me 3 greens, gg not going back in there.

Tournament: Anyone else burned out?

I quite enjoy looking at NA gold, and seeing that it is the only league out of 6 of them, where one server didn’t win EVERY SINGLE WEEK. NA gold (T1) is the only league playing WvW properly.

Seriously, NA silver/bronze and all 3 EU leagues have one server face rolling the rest. That. Is. Boring.

NA gold for president.

You’re kidding right? Because gold is also a joke right now. Instead of having 1 server getting the wins(which only happened in season 1 because SoR was weak and crumbled from week 2, they sided with bg in week 1) we now have 2 servers TC and JQ double teaming and trading wins the entire tournament for 1st and 2nd overall, all that for 50 more tickets so gg.

And yes seasons are a joke and will continue to be a joke, as long as Anet does nothing to support spreading out the population. Way to help bandwagon HoD in silver league ANet, way to throw off the balance right before the tournament and then get servers locked in the wrong places, way to go. Swiss doesn’t exactly work with a 3 vs, 6 team bracket, mags and db end up facing each other the entire tournament and getting beat on by the top 4 servers.

T1 needs to be locked into their own bracket after tournament, maybe then people will get blobsick of each other up there and start spreading out. SoS needs to lose some weight and go back to T2 status than T1.5, Mags could probably use some ocx, DB could probably use na, HoD will probably step up into T2.

If they planned on having the events/living story starting up next week then the tournament should have ended this week at the latest.

Lack of leveling content in zones?

If you’re only doing the pve zones then you will probably have to do a couple of zones in your range, (not much different from when WoW first started and you needed to do a couple zones to get through your level range).

Also you can go back to lower zones and get decent exp from them, although a little less than you would from doing zones in your levels, it still helps. The zone dynamic events should be triggering more often again since megaserver tech is in. You can buy cheap food to get bonus exp from kills, and use boost potions.

Most people mix things up and do a bit of the other stuff, you can wvw for good exp if you get on the karma trains which usually are today. You can do dungeons, you can even do spvp now and get level tomes in there, I already got 12 tomes just from casual spvping for a week. Then there’s crafting which will get you around 7 levels each.

Ascended weapon/armor chest frequency?

Just got an ascended weapon chest(rabid) over the weekend at rank 400+, ascended armor chest(soldier) at like rank 175+ I think it was, 4 ascended rings(berserker, rabid, cavalier, zerk/valk), 1 keg of wxp.

Anyone ever get an ascended amulet or accessory? don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone get those.

Megaserver and rallying troops for wvw

Once again they should have not included main cities in the megaservers, leave them for their own home servers so that players and guilds have a place to do player events, rally calls, recruitment etc. But seeing that this affects wvw, I’m sure it will once again fall on deaf arenanet ears.

It was also a bad idea moving lion’s arch hub into vigil keep and gendarran fields, but whatever.

Thought you were trying to fix map blobbing not population imbalance?

There’s always going to be population imbalance no matter what you do, they need to price server transfer fees better to start fixing the problem. Which in combination with the lower wvw caps would help prompt people to move to lower servers. But this is an idea that was needed to be done 6-12 months ago when all those blowout matches were happening, instead we got a ratings parameter adjustment.

Honestly I’m on SoS, and if map caps go down and I have wait 2 hours to get into maps in prime time I’ll just quit the game instead of moving. I want to actually play when I want to play on the server I want to play on with the guild I’m in, and eotm is not an option. How many other players out there like me? who knows, they willing to screw with the game in this fashion with competitors around now?

P.S there are other ways to help with scoring even with population/coverage imbalances, made a thread on that 4 months ago.

[Suggestion] Server Merge for low pop servers

I don’t know how bad it is down in the lower ranks, so don’t know if we really need merges, but need them to finally do a proper server transfer structure. There is no reason servers 13-15 should have had free transfer rates, that took away any reason to move to 22-24. Hey look same transfers rate to servers halfway up the rankings instead, gee that’s a tough choice 13 or 22 hmmmm.

No reason any of the bottom half of servers should have the same transfers cost as the top half at any time, every tier should have it’s own price, tier 1 should always be 1800(maybe even 2400 now instead), and go down in balanced increments to tier 8 which should always be 0.

So essentially only two guild groups will get to play on a map in prime time(if they even get enough players past the pugs), and the rest will have to go to eotm to get their wvw fix?

This suggestion has been brought up before and for the reason to force players and guilds to spread out more into the lower servers, which at one point I agreed to. But I think it’s a little late to do that, as I think wvw players are at the point that if you do anything negative to that part of the game, players will seriously start to leave instead.

Even if you reduce the caps now people will continue to zerg, it’s still more efficient and quicker to take towers and keeps that way. If you want to hurt the karma train then need to do something about their supply gains. If you want to hurt the zerg busters then hurt their tagging and bagging, urieldhynne.2743 is on the right track. Raise the percentage damage for required tagging for reward, other games have it set to 50% damage instead of one hit for tags, you will see how fast people move back to smaller groups because less people to fight over tagging.
