Oh and don’t forget (!) you can interrupt your own knock back (or jump back) of elixier gun 4 by swapping weapons. So you won’t waste time in mid, nor will you fall down cliffs.

Hm, dunno how you get melted with that. If you got difficult enemies you should go for 6/6/0/2/0 and go for vigor instead of 6/6/0/0/2 with speedy kits. If you want I can show you ingame
Also the shield is a good defensive and supportive weapon. It has a good block with stun aswell another combo finisher. Normally I run a rifle in open world, to tag enemies or just run around. However in pt I allways go for a shield with a pistol. Skills 3-5 are awesome, 2 just for single target damage (however I just use it cuz I got a quip). A well used pistol 3 blind can prevent a good amount of damage. And the additional might stack for the party outdamages the rifle anyway. The rifle 3 and 5 are great, ofc, however bombs and grenades aswell the elixier gun are often more than enough damage.

Full Zerker, 6/6/0/X/X, depending on situation. Go for vigor if you need it, otherwise go for speed. As for runes use strength, as for sigils there are multiple options like energy, battle, strength, force, just the casual best sigils.
Main Skills are Healing Turret, Grenade Kit, Bomb Kit and the Elixier Gun. Those are the most flexible and best kits the engineer has. Grenades for vuln, bombs for combo fields aswell damage, blind, cc, and the elixier gun for its great utility and blast finisher with an ultra high damage output.
I do not suggest the mine over the elixier gun since:
- its combo finisher takes more time to activate
- the combo finisher has more cd
- the mine explosion displaces enemies (may unstack)
- the mine + its toolbelt deals less damage than the elixier 4 AND has more cd
- missing stun breaker
- missing heal
- missing condi cleanse

So you say you want to master the engineer class? Then you should not be using the flame thrower more than for testing it and see how weak it is compared to an explosive traited engineer. The flame thrower just has a terrible dps on it’s auto. It has some average hitting skills, but in the end it’s more for the looks. It is ok if you are soloing, since you can trait for free stacks of might, however this trait will be weaker in a party where you hit the limit of 25 stacks.
The engineer class is imo the most complex and flexible class in GW2. It’s easy to play, but really hard to master. The main reasons why engineers are awesome, is because they can really do anything what other classes can do too. They are the best might stackers in the game, got good aoe heal, if required even reflection and invisibility. They are even great condi cleanser. They only lack in stability. However this awesomeness comes with a price – you need to be very fast on your keys, you have to work with finishers and combo fields and you have to understand how they work, to not mess them up.
So before I give you a suggestion about a build, I better ask you if you want to stay on the FT for solo play, or make a change and become an explosive engineer.

Well bombs are already good untraited, just a bit harder to hit many enemies with the low range. However, if you are outnumbered, it’s often enough to lay down the smoke bomb for a long lasting blind, so you can spam 1 to finish most of them off before the blinds run out.

Oh and don’t underestimate the elixier gun! It has some decent skills. Noone hates a heal field, neither an ally only condi cleanse. But what makes it really good is it’s skill 4, wich is a blast finisher and deals a massive amount of damage. Combined with the glue bomb it’s very effective. You also can interrupt your own jump back if you swap your weapons.
Open world you should use the rifle aswell bombs are extremly good, especially if you run in circles, spamming 1 while the normally stronger champion dies while chasing you
In dungeons use Pistol + Shield for the combo finisher and utility. But I think this is a bit too early if you are asking for leveling.
The grenade kit becomes strong when you can trait it – means, you get an additional grenade (+50% dmg) and more range.
Engineer is a very complex class and probably the hardest class to master, due to the many combinations you can make. If you want I can give you smoe tips ingame, just pm me.

1) The main attack of engineers weapons are allways crap, since they got such strong kits wich replace them.
I assume you are talking about PvE in your case. Under water you should be using grenades as ranged attack and definitly bombs as melee attack.
Bombs are by far the best dps weapon under water, being able to hit 5 tagets with a even higer attack speed than at land, wich is in the best case (25 stacks might, 25 stacks vulnerability, buffs, 5 targets) able to hit a dps of about 80’000.
However do not underestimate the 2-5 skills of the harpoon gun. the mines are also able to hit for 3x 10k per target, and the delayed sticky bomb thing hits too for a good amount. The other skills have good utility too.
But allways – avoid using it, it’s balanced because we got enough other skills to use. But yes, I agree, it’s incredible laughtable.
2) Picking up turrets reduces their CD by 25%, destroying it causes minor damage aswell a blast finisher AT YOUR POSITION (not the position where the turret was). Traitet it will even cause a knock back, wich can become quite handy in WvW (edge of the mist f.ex)

How would you expect it to work with a target? That makes no sense. It’s simple: The trait is an allways active passive wich says, that you have 10% more crit chance on enemies farther than 600 yards. You can’t activate anything, so the question seems a bit weird to me. It affects every enemy farther than 600 yards to you. However I expect that projectiles in mid air, like grenades, are calculated by their hit and not when you start to throw them.

No way. There is nothing better for the bombs than the range increase. If you go for easy stacking dungeons, it might be less useful, but even there and especially in fotm etc, mobs do not allways stack as you wish, they tend to move a bit or one stays left one right, if someone has to dodge etc. I’d never leave that trait for some semi good condition damage.
Btw, in theory the bleeding sounds “good” however, in a 5 man group your bleeding gets easily overwritten by other players and the damage is cut early. Also 300 condi damage is not “high” condi damage. It’s low, even if it’s a zerker build. Low is low. 300 condition damage grants you crappy 15 damage per sec per stack. The might stacks will add up to 1000 condi dmg though.
However I’d also suggest the bleeding trait IF you only play with grenades. With other weapons 15% are just too low to be procced.
you really should go bombs AND grenades.

Could probably have hit a bit harder tossing grenades rather than the bombs.
Bombs solidly out damage grenades.
If the vuln stacks are 25 – yes.
If you are solo – yes.
Everywhere else – no.
So there was a bit of talk about how effective engi is in the dungeon speed run and the suggested comp for Arah p2 is to let engi replace the thief and et cetera Arah path 2 Guangway
If you ignore the terribad mesmer, engi seems good except for:
- The stealth combo used for skipping has long cd and duration is really short.
- Their blast finisher is a finisher that can CC mob unintentionally.
- They are too slow at stacking vuln in a short fight.
- Their DPS isn’t on par with a second ele with conjured weapons.Engi isn’t the greatest in PvE and had no place in the meta dungeon speedrun.
Maybe it would be better to change the war with the ing tbh…
It’s not like (if it matters) you can kick such terrible persons. However I rarely kick somone from a dungeon since it really doesn’t matter. Fotm 50 is another thing. Good players or poof!
According to Rozbuska its with about 20 stacks might and vuln, no bufffood and no bloodlust. However this is pre-critdmg-nerf. I guess today it’s the best you can get. Pre-patch you really were able to have alsmost 10k bombs. My personal record is 8k too, but after patch I often get just 6k. Still, 6k on 5 targets with a cd of 0.75 is pretty nice.

Pug =/= bad players. It’s hilarous how everyone calls himself a “pro” and playing with friends automaticly means “organized group” and every random is a tardnub. Oh, ofc if you are the random, everyone else is a nub and you’re still the pro… Sick of such posts.
Note that in some dungeons you can take a quick dip underwater and revert the stacking sigil nerf. Not all dungeons, but some.

Engineers are good. But they are not optimal.
GW2SCR, a site dedicated to speedrun records and their party comp. In the restricted rule set (i.e. no exploits), not a single party has 1 Engineer.
But Engineers are so optimal.
So you go speedrun now. Ok. So you see according to this side they have to suck. So let’s better not even start with it. I’m sorry but I only beleve what I do personally. Aslong as I haven’t seen a video or been myself in a perfect party to do a speedrun and I just couldnt be better, then I beleve you. Right now? No. Noone tries, noone wins.

4 Warriors? You’re crazy, no more than 1 please. If it weren’t for Might/Vuln from an Engineer they’d be fighting Necros for most useless PvE class. Their damage isn’t up to snuff to compete, its okay, but not good enough. Without their offensive support through Might & Vuln, Engineers would be nothing in a dungeon.

what’s the dps of a party? ~5’000-10’000 per player, depends on buffs and enemies. Well now lets say the worst case of 5k. Even 5k*5 are 25’000 per second from wich 3% or 6% are 750 or 1500. If you deal 5’000 dps, additional 200 power would result in 6% at 3k power wich is 300 damage.
Yes – it GREATLY outdamages any power bufffood unless there isn’t a 2nd vuln stacker as effective as you.
+40% condi dura bufffood outdamages greatly the missing power and precision due the passive damage buff. Nothing more to say.
Well to be fair, Flissy has a point since there are really only a few good engis. However since we speak of “organized and optimal group” I’d allways take an engi over a 2nd [enter any class here].
The “optimal group” depends anyway on dungeon. For example in ascalon you’ll really enjoy having 3 eles for damage. An engi offers everythin they need – vulnerability on boss fights. Eles are gonna deal the most damage with FGS and Ice Bow, maybe even Lightning Hammer. Since they do that, they’ll be on water with a 2/2/2/5/3 build for max damage and therefore are unable to stack vulnerability. The engi alone (with bufffood) can stack 20 vuln on bosses.
My fav party in general is: Guard, Mes, War, Engi, Ele, Ranger. However since I play the engi normally and I doubt a pug engi / ranger is good, I’d honestly take 2nd war and guard for them.
Noone should go for 6 points into illusions in PvE unless you need to tag mobs in open world or just “want to play for fun”.
Mainly you should go for 6/4/0/4/0 if you have 2+ mantras in your utility bar, if you don’t, go 5/4/0/5/0.
You sir, need a focus. And .. oh why do I even start talking? If a good mesmer buddy just has created a total awesome “everything-you-need-to-know” guide! Take your time and read it, it’s worth it:
Scholar is terrible for fotm compared to strength. Scholar runes are for organized zerk rush dungeons where nothing bad can happen if everyone does what they should do. However I’m not even sure if the 3% additional damage ever will outdamage the longer lasting might buff you gave your team. If you constantly have 25 stacks might, yes, if not, no.
Therefore I strongly recommend the rune of the strength, even if it’s a more expensive rune. A cheaper alternative is the rune of the pack.
I do not recommend the rifle turret.
If you need a burst stacking thing for stealth or something, use the thumper turret. It has 3 blast finishers on it’s own.
If you want sustained finisher, you definitly want the elixier gun since it’s by far the best option for a blast finisher, heal, condi cleanse and damage. Harder to use but totally a Nr.1 kit!

OT: Put down the HT heals you for 2500~, activate it heals everyone for 2500~ destroying it right after activating it heals everyone around YOU for 1300~.
PvE + no kits =/= engineer

I stopped reading about 50% of the posts here … Since there isn’t a “best” class in pve anyways, engineers are in a very good spot. They give the team the 25stacks vulnerability even on bossfights, where other classes fail poorly. Even if the engi deals like 80% of a warriors damage, the bonus he gives to the team with vulnerability is still much better than just “another warrior / guard / …”.
Warriors and guards are indeed easier to play and have less fail potential. However a team with 5 different classes with ppl who know how to play their class outdamages every multi-heavy party for sure.
The engineer can stack might like a guard, can heal like an ele, cloak like a theif, has the best 5 man aoe dps in the game and stacks vuln for everyone. Engi is superior, however more than one in a team is kinda of a waste, like all classes except warrior and guard.
TL;DR: Engi = PvE superior.
I agree with OP. A transmutaion charge is about 2.5g right now. NO low level would afford that. Maybe free is the wrong definition. I’d say you should add more transmutation charges:
Everyone gets their TC x 8. A lv10 item requires 1 TC, a lv40 requires 4 and a 80 requires 8 charges. So you wouldn’t have to cry when using them at lower levels.
I agree with 1 and 2 as you look at it spearchuka.
However iWarlock requires a QoL buff. His bolts can’t travel over the abyss and are falling straight down. Also look at other phantasms. iSwordsman does more dps and he even evades attacks and never misses it’s target. Yet he is balanced due the single damage that can be evaded by dodging. So should the warlock work. Range for the price of less dps and no evade / combo finisher.
And 4 and 5 are simply fanboy comments. The conditions dont last long enough to be noticable. Condition wise you can ignore CS, only the daze is dangerious. Both need buffs, 4 needs a huge buff or CDR or aegis/distortion on activation.
That’s exactly what I’m saying. I move with WASD, however I turn around with the R mouse. So I see absolutely NO problem at all to lock my mouse in a good position on the screen to easily throw grenades there. Why wouldn’t I face my target anyway? :/

With a pistol grants you a block, reflection, combofinisher and stun. In PvP/WvW while playing condi dmg, use pistol and shield. In PvE in general use Pistol and Shield. The utility this weapon grants you is superior. Sure the rifle bursts but an engi uses grenades and bombs for PvE content damage source. You can fill your mainweapons with utility instead of damage, so Pistol + Shield > Rifle in PvE.

so… is it worth taking PH over a flat 15% damage increase? going only by the numbers its clear that PH is a 20% increase on DPS but that’s only in the long run, using PH over a +15% will lower your burst but make your damage more consistent
20% less CD on attacks means +25% damage for phants without attack animation. So about 22-23% for iWarlock, iSwordsman, about 20% for iZerker, about 15% for iDuellist and about 5-10% for iWarden. iMage, iDisenchanter and iDefender also benefit greatly from this … if they would deal any damage at all
It allways depends how to calculate this. It’s just theory. If enemies or phants die after one attack, it was not worth anything. If it’s exactly able to hit a 2nd time where a PH less phant wouldn’t have attacked, it was totally worth it. Depends on situation.

Nope. You trait in the “bullkitten” trait line to get there wich decreases your dmg in general. Noone need condition damage or shatter cdr in pve. WvW and PvP is someting else.
As for PvE I’d rather recommend 6/4/0/4/0 or 5/4/0/5/0 (<2 mantras) instead of 2/4/0/4/4 or 2/4/0/5/3.

I guess we’ve all noticed that ANet has plans about chaning the GS a bit for making it more viable. However I feel the staff needs that kind of buff MUCH more.
I really love the staff gameplay, but let’s face it: As much as I enjoy the staff, except for zerg champions and evasion, it’s pretty useless.
Lets talk about the skills:
Winds of Chaos
I think winds of chaos either needs a power increase to be viable or simply increase the duration of buffs and give him an additional bounce. This can escale quickly due the clones, so I suggest a power buff. As a condition weapon the aa is great.
Phase Retread
nothing to change!

Awesome phantasm in theory, crappy in practice. I like the idea and in PvE its even viable against bosses. However the projectile is too low, cannot fly over cliffs and misses like 99% against moving targets. He aims where one is walking to, if a player then changes the direction he misses completly.
I really recommend either a very fast projectile or a homing slow projectile. It’s easy to dodge in pvp / wvw, same as iSwordsman or iZerker. I do not think that’s “op”.
Chaos Armor
Once upon a time, it was a good skill. Granted protection upon activation and had no icd. You didn’t want to hit anyone with a CA. Now days it feels like “look at my aura! looks great … yea that’s it”. Noone likes chaos fields cuz of this, not in pve and not in wvw.
I recomment to change the skill and let it work like standing in a chaos storm. You gain over it’s duration permanently random boons, protection, vigor, regen and upon activation you shall be blesses by swiftness. Mesmers really need it. The swiftness only appears with this skill, the other changes also with combo field CA. And remove the icd again … really …
Chaos Storm
I really like the chaos storm. But it has lost a lot of its glory since the aegis has been randomized. Once the chaos storm ALLWAYS granted aegis upon activation to anyone inside. You were able to time it and counter attacks. The last boon also allways was aegis. The conditions applied by CS are just decoration right ANet? I mean … really … like 1 sec poison or chill would disturb you even a tiny little bit …
I recommend to give it back it’s aegis upon activation and as the last buff. However REMOVE the chance of aegis being optained between. It would be op. If it feels too strong even remove the aegis as last buff too. However being able to grant timed aegis is pretty decent and would greatly buff the staff again.
I also recommend to buff the power damage if hit by CS multiple times. It would buff the damage in PvE mainly, since ppl can leave the field in WvW or PvP, however granting you some combos with roots etc.
The daze is strong enough imo. However I would let the CS apply all conditions at the same time for 1 sec. You should not feel much if you leave the CS, however one should not like to fight in a CS.
Maybe even increase its CD a bit.
I may have overreacted a bit at some points but that’s probably just because I really love the playstyle of the staff however I think it’s an exremly weak weapon right now. *I do not wish for all the buffs ofc!" Means if you would change the CS like this, I agree with a low dmg defensive weapon, requiring no buffs on auto. Vice versa.
I just think I’m not the only one here who KNOWS that the staff is in a bad position right now. Since release it has only been nerfed and never buffed. However it needs buffs, it needs love again, it needs to become …

Support guards are terrible in fractals. They are totally useless. A waste of slots. Heal bomb engi is kinda the same. For wvw it might work.

Sup guard is pretty underrated imo. A friend of mine wanted to play sup guard (typical girl role xD) and I told her too that full damage and zerk is the way to go. But surprisingly the support is pretty decent. Tons of heals n’ buffs, I cannot complain about a lower ks, aslong as harder parts are easier, like dredge, wall, etc where you have to “facetank” stuff. However I agree if it’s a easy part (wich most are tbh) I like to see a retraited guard. I do not complain about anything anymore without having it palyed myself.
However I’ve not played healer engi tbh, sounds useless but funny, so I’ll give it a try. Just bought myself some power/toughness/healing power exos from wvw for a few gold and it looks hilarous in my doctor outfit XD. But I think it’s rather useless, agreed :P
