Y-day i scored beautiful 8 wins vs 1 loss after period of constant win-loss win-loss and so on so here’s advice from experience:

get a good team

All this “git gut” talk isn’t worth jack if your other 4 teammates suck, and if you go solo match making will do it’s darnest to ensure that’s the case in 50% of your games.

If you got a good team, then we can talk skill. With good team you get win streaks. With win streaks not only you progress in pips but get increasingly good opponents. Only then, in a good team, vs good opposition can you truly see if you’re good or you suck. If you’re pulling your weight and aren’t lagging far behind the other 4, then this was never l2p issue to begin with. It’s was horrid match making meant to screw you over with bad teammates.

If you are constantly dying and basically kicked around like a sack of potatos while others on your team are doing good – then it’s a l2p issue.
First get a good team and stick with it, then go from there.

There are two top reasons necro damage is usually crap in pvp scenario:

1. no burst – self explanatory/
2. no godly tier defenses – you can’t have the cake and eat it like guards, warrs or scrappers. Either you have good defense at cost of damage, or good damage at cost of getting blown up easy..
3. no godly tier defenses II – good evade or invulni can avoid both power damage and for example condition inflicting move. But as necro you don’t have that, necro facetanks his damage, so you need defenses vs both of these, leaving little room for offense..

well it’s a matter of perception. For teams involved yours would always be blue, theirs red. For spectators it can be something different, but given we have random team names now, that could be used as well.

I want mine always blue, enemy always red. There have been cases i mistook scoreboard points thinking red is my team when i was blue and vice-versa. I know it’s moronic and my mistake, but in spvp player should not be forced to spent an iota of brainpower more then necessary on UI intricacies. Everything save the actual combat should be extremely simple, reliable and unchangeable, so full attention is put into the match and not wrestling with HuD.

Yes ranger’s great for pve, thanks to pet being able to tank for him, and even having bit of stealth to ensure that happens (become invisible, mobs switch their attention over to your pet). Many a time with medium skill you can solo stuff majority of other professions cannot unless the player using them is really skilled and knows his stuff.

Condi ranger is huge fun, personally I’d prefer him over power, which in turn is usually safer (if it’s longbow). Also rangers are kings vs many HoT mobs, due to very high cc (which modrem hate and can flat out be rendered harmless by some), that in many cases you can apply from a safe distance.

Druid is a top tier pvp and raids class so again pure win.

On the flipside ranger drawbacks include alleged low dps (not a problem in raids since druid is taken for support not damage), and complete lack of any form of boon stripping/corruption.

Also keep in mind that ranger’s easy to learn, but hard to master. Especially the druid, who needs to manage 3 swapping mechanics to be really effective – weapon swaps, pet swaps, celestial avatar form.

Let’s not go overboard with the flattery, quite often it’s necros saving your kitten . Hell in pve i often run blood magic instead of spite squarely because without transfusion to mass ress ppl, it’s a bloodbath at bigger bosses or some fractal runs..

Exactly!! Ours always blue, their always red. As it is blue has clear and simple color scheme, while for red the mini-map is a trap!

Deathly chill in it’s original form was the only thing making staff viable as actual condi weapon. poison, chill (with damage), bit of bleeding and fear (with terror + chill damages) were a reason no not attach a suction cap to your staff and sell it off as toilet plunger. Now….anyone having pipe issues?

All kitten talk about how HoT was too hard to hardcore…bleh. I may the vocal minority (make it hard!) but here’s the rundown on how things feel for me as your non-casual player:

1. PvE – love the maps (save shiverpeaks), especially the HoT onces. The maze like verticality, hidden nook and crannies etc. I love to explore to complete etc.

But i hate how braindead most of pve is. Rule of thumb is simple – go balls to the wall zerk or you’re doing it wrong. 90% of possible builds and setups don’t exist because they’re just not efficient…

And to add insult to injury, to “play my way” i have to craft tons of gear sets (for different stats) if i really want to for example experience condi bunker, zerk rusher, healer/medic playstyle on the same char. Again, in most cases needless…

2. PvP – finally a place where i get to choose my stats freely without extra hussle, where building for anything else then balls to the wall damage can be actually meaningful, where things like stunbreaks, escapes, stronger heals or condi traps matter.

But it’s just few small, same maps, none of the exploration, puzzles etc. Well duh! it’s pvp!

Still i feel we shouldn’t dive into this whole “pve is for casuals” cauldron too much. I can already feel the dreaded grasp of that approach when i go teq around i dunno….2 years after it’s rewamp to see people clueless on how to reapair a turret, which skill to use first and foremost (#2!!!) or get jumped by risen spawns from the bushes 10 meters away…

Pamper them too much and then it’s mass deaths and hysteria when they hit something remotely remindful of “not faceroll easy” content…

I for one would enjoy a very offensive armor mechanic, something in line with retalliation or druid’s glyph of equality in non celestial avatar version, albeit slightly different.

This one would inflict fear and corrupt a boon on being struck. If they wanna hit you, let’em. Pretty soon they’ll either be running for their dear life (possibly with terror damage while doing so), or find out their boons just went on a long vacation to corruptionville.

I don’t know what to say to the OP here. But i’ll try. As necro main i find this post completely 180 degree from the reality.

Warriors have insane stability uptime, pulsing resistance and 0 damage panic button. In 1v1 condi necro gets wrecked before he evan manages to fart out a good poison, because condi necro has either terrible sustain, or terrible condi damage because he slotted sustain skills.

First and foremost necro (especially condi!) needs time to get his damage going, while warr is a kill’em fast rusher that can open the fight up with total immunity to conditions and/or damage and/or cc. Even if we do corrupt resistance, the stance is pulsing it again in 3 sec, and it’s either landing another corrupt or hoping you’re a power necro else you’re gonna have a very bad day.

without necro to corrupt warr can literally go godmode with instane stab, 0 damage endure pain and berserker stance. And warr is the prime burst damage profession next to thief, so a good warr can get the job done before they go off.

The battlemage – mage who feels more like a warrior, fights up close and personal, can take a lot of punishement, but at same time does not lose magican’s in combat depth, flexibility and plays not seen in typical warrior/berserker. That’s pretty much what this build serves.

If you need a bruiser that will not be a free meal for warriors/guards/scrappers and more reckless thieves then read on, as my best to date necro build follows:

Yes, you’re seeing it right – it’s a core necro build, and not because of lack of xpac, or f2p mercy, but because to achieve it’s synergies and balance it was needed to do it without the reaper.

How to use him:

Offense – wells will give you both quickness as well as protection so you can go dagger/axe happy and pour it on, without too much concerns for defense. However that alone would be a poor strategy with enemy interrupts/escapes. That’s where your traits and warhorn come in. Flashing shroud will give you 3s stability (for stomps, or chanelling important skill), 5s fury and cast enfeeble on them weakening them. Also your crits will inflict weakness as well crippling their dodge and damage options.

Don’t use locust swarm for movement! You have 25% passive speed with equipped dagger for that. Instead save it for battle. Constantly reapplied cripple along with lf generation will greatly help you to stay on them and not behind in your defense while you go stabby-stab on their rear.

When things get ranged you got your axe. Sorry staff, but you suck in terms of power dps and axe’s real burst (#2) along with being a non-projectile based ranged weapon make it imho the best choice for medium range combat. Staff may be cute for harass, but when you’re in real fight where the other side fights back with some real power damage, slow, reflectable and weak staff auto is not gonna win you a dogfight.

Remember your corrupts – dagger #2, axe #3 along with well of corruption all can do some nice corrupting for you when used in the right moment.
Focus #5 may not be a corrupt, but ripping 3 boons along with chill never hurt anyone…save your enemies that is;)

Warhorn #4 is your unblockable interrupt..if you manage to land it.

Deathshroud wise…well it’s the core necro deathshroud. Don’t expect miracles here. But lifeblast is always a long rage combat option vs slower/no dodge avaiable targets, and helps adopt a ranged playstyle, more fitting for a necro current days. And with soul reaping + paladin amulet equipped you will have a fair amount of it to shield yourself.

Defense – as you can see it’s looking good. Pally amulet provides best defensive option, while still giving very respectable offense (high power, high precision).

Tons of protection (both wells, on demand spectral armor, passive spectal armor), stab on ds entry, stunbreaks on ds, well of power and spectral armor, super tanky and immediate to cast plague ensure that if you don’t delay with your reaction too much you won’t drop dead in 5 seconds in your 1v1’s.

Also notice shroud is traited for shorter cooldown, so you can flash it more often and freely to get more of that stab, fury and auto-cast enfeeble. sometimes waiting 3s less to re-enter shroud is difference between life and death. Here you can be more liberal with ds flashing.
Vs condies you got traited consume conditions (which you can shield with ds stab), well of power and passive plague signet from cures. If you go staff instead of axe/focus, then there will be staff #4 too.

Flexibility & variants.

While the two wells are nearly mandatory, the last slot is the “pick it yourself” slot in this build. I tend to use spectral armor the most, but a lot of things will fit there great as well.

Skills like: spectral wall, corrupt boon, corrosive poison cloud, spectral grasp, flesh wurm, spectral walk or even the plague signet all make sense there, and majority of them will be boosted with your traits.

You can choose staff instead of axe/wh for your second set. It’ll give you more control,condi transfer+blast finisher and possiblity to make marks unblockable (you got soul reaping).

But you’re sacrificing your boon ripping on both axe and focus, along with superior and unreflectable ranged damage.

No problem with switching spectral mastery for vital persistance if you like staying in ds longer and aren’t hard pressed for maximum spectral armor uptime. Though it’s an epic skill so think carefully!

So summing up:

Pros:
- solid defense, not a free kill for warrs/guards/scrappers/normal skill thieves.
- can hold a point long enough to call for help and not die before it arrives (plague form + protections and pally amulet)
- core necro spec!
- bursty on demand offense that can hurt them bad
- reasonable amount of boon corrupts
- can be easily tweaked to your needs.
- quickness FUN!
- deeper gameplay (well of power + self inflicted condies, setting up burts or point defenses)

Cons:
- no condi damage
- limited amount of boon corruptions
- limited aoe damage, generally more of 1v1 damage dealer
- no insane might/vulni stacking.
- jack of all trades (defense wise), master of…
- not the easiest to use – you’ll need time to fully tap it’s potential.

Or rework/buff certain core ones. Core necro was horrid across the board, with each buff making it not only more viable, but actually more fun and varied to play. But there’s still a lot of 2012 things in core necro kit that need addressing (like lich, shroud, wth is staff supposed to be anyway etc)

I love axe for being a real ranged weapon that can actually be a threat for all those pistol thieves or bow rangers. Staff is not a ranged combat weapon. It’s a ranged harass weapon at best. Once the other side starts returning fire it’s clear you’re going down unless you got something way better dps and variation wise in store.

But a close 2nd is corrupting boons. Except they usually get reapplied right back. So….if we’re the extreme of anti-boon, then how about we get something fitting the theme, making our boon corrupt a real threat?

If a mesmer can trait to have massive cooldown increase on interrupted skills, then why can’t a necro trait to have a denial of corrupted boons re-application on successful corrupt? A grandmaster trait that would let’s say work like this:

“Boons you corrupt, cannot be applied to target for next 5 seconds”.

There may be a need for nerfing access to corrupts given how powerful this may be, but at the end of the day it would mean our boon corrupts actually mean something in a fight, rather then forcing a dh or warr to cast his boon skill/activate passive a sec or two earlier then normal…

Recently i’ve been pvping with core necro opposed to reaper, and well – it’s possible, but like someone told me recently:

bypassing the problem is not same as fixing the problem

That’s exactly how i feel about certain very outdated, unimaginative and left to rot aspects of core necro kit. Top two offenders:

1. completely lackluster and detached from necro reality deathshroud skillset.
2. poor + copy-pasta ranged gameplay.

Ad1. Reaper shroud shows that the king is naked. Reapers get an ice combo field, combo finishers, projectile block, condi burst, great synergy with traits (transfusion with reasonable cooldown, dhuumfire viable) resulting in acctually viable hybrid damage builds .

Now back to core deathshroud.
Nothing. Nadda. Ad detached from the rest of necro as can be. Terrible, slow auto (dhuumfire pointless). Horrible cooldown on #4 (and reaper can trait to even cut his already lower cooldown each time he gets a kill!). No combo fields, no finishers, no skills that help kite save the once in century #5 , gap closer on twice the cooldown as reaper’s and quite possibly the slowest projectile ingame…

Core deathshroud stinks. Badly. It’s literally just a shield with some buttons to press if you ask me.

ad2. and then there’s the ranged game (Grenth help us all..). Lifeblast, staff auto, lich auto – they all do the same thing. A kitteningly slow, reflectable projectile, that does damage, pierces and..that’s it. Ok staff auto gains life force, but you can cross out that damage part next to it. While in some cases it might be useful i ask “Do we really need 3 of the same and already not that good anyway?”

So what else is going on in ranged department? Well there’s the axe which everyone hates cause it’s auto damage and speed is…well…“axy”. And staff marks which you blow through in 2 seconds of a teamfight, and then wonder what you gonna do with the remaining 8 since aa has crap damage and 0 condi play…

So a small shoutout from a profession that has no 0 damage defenses, no miliscule cooldowns on epic burst skills and terrible kite/chase game – do consider some updating of core necro to 2016 standards…

…please.

Necro needs a team that knows it’s stuff or at least doesn’t allow for constant 2v1 on the necro. Gl with that in spvp unless you got good friends for that or a member of guild that actually knows what it’s doing in ranked…

The current amulet pool is also heavily to blame. They scream power meta, and in such a meta only “tanks” are these with full damage negating skills such as blocks, evades, invulnies, or damage reduction to 0. “Accidently” these are also the classes with access to absurd levels of boon spam.

So you get a proffession with nearly god like damage mitigation that’s completely independent from the stats, while said stats can go balls to the wall zerk for absurd damage.

And what of the counters you ask? Let’s see…in the arid wasteland of boon stripping/corrupting and unblockable damage/cc professoins we have warriors, which are currently also part of the problem, necros which are in very difficult position right now (gl on attrition class when >90% amulets are anti-sustain and you got 0 god-mode defenses), thieves, which generally aren’t in a good spot vs a guard, especially melee, and mesmers which would have to rely on melee clones for good boonstrip. Good luck with that.

So honestly i don’t know if it’s the guard, the amulets, the hard life of anti-boon/block classes (save warr for latter) but something is definitely out of whack.

plenty. but it does requires skill and thought. Few propositions for you:

stability – he can’t pull/push you if you got stability on you. Foot in the grave is your
“short stab needed” friend, though reaper’s reaper shroud pulsing stab is where it’s at vs cc. your elites solve that problem too.

protection – guard can do a lot, but removing boons is not one of them. You cast protection, he can’t do jack about it.

plaugue elite – laugh at his traps, damage and cc in his face. Once his bursts are done you can leave plague and get down to business.

Unblockable harass – necro has a lot of unblockables. From corrupting boons, to well of suffering that hits like a truck with power damage.

Corrosive poison cloud – destroys projectiles, poisons, weakens and is ublockable. He won’t be a happy camper when you cast it on him, or yourself if you want maximum security vs his longbow power shots.

Corrupt boon – his stab becomes fear, regeneration poison, retalliation confusion…oh and it’s unblockable too, also on short cooldown if traited (10s).

Staff harass – if traited in soul reaping, it’s marks become unblockable. You know what to do from there:)

Axe harass – axe attacks while ranged are not counted as projectiles and all his projectile blocks mean squat vs axe. he can block it, but there’s a limit to how much he can block.

Generally in real combat all of this advice will be bad at best. While it does work, it works in conjuction with on another and when you’re comfortable with necro to the point of instictively using the right skill at the right situation, and not thinking for 5 seconds what to press in this situation. You’ll just need to work on your necro reflexes and appropriate fast reaction to dh burst (and many others).

There are ragequitters and afkers. If someone afks, cause i don’t know – lunch is burning, someone’s at the door etc i won’t throw tantrums. Am such case sometimes myself.

But quitters who throw a tantrum barely 4 minutes into a match i hate, had that twice in a row today. I’m at 0 pips so no harm done, but my teammates weren’t so lucky..
This needs some kicking to the curb.

I’m a very unhappy camper about league achievements system.

edit pardon me, my bad. System does state which achies count for meta. That aside, still…

Some achies are not counted to progression and due to that i’m forced to win on 3 professions. What if I only play one or two (my case). If league dominator was counted in the meta i could pass to next season playing what i like and not hurting teammate’s game with a lousily played character handicap.

Get rid of forms all together. Turn it into a party buff skill similar to how they changed Guardian wrath tome into the shout “feel my wrath”.

Hell no, plague form is a godsend in spvp. Lich may suck, but plague is diamonds.

skill cds not resetting at start

I don’t know how this got missed over 4 years, but skill cooldowns are not being reset when you enter an spvp match.

Now imagine you want to change a long cd elite before match starts but you can’t….or you can but 9 other ppl have wait 1 minute for you to get it off cd.

Clearly that’s not how it should be. Hope a-net will address it soon.

I run a self build power necro and well….build is great fun and i think overall works, but most of points mentioned above are true. If you’re a necro you have a huge “target me” sign over your head. Plague is indeed a must, hell it’s usually the first thing i do when i run to mid. I plague, and if the team isn’t complete garbage, they’ll use the opening i made them to burst down enemy targets.

Even 1v1 we’re horrible because other classes have insta bursts to kill you hard while having godmode defenses for the period. Necros has no such thing. Ofc there is boon corruption, but i don’t recall warrior stances being corruptable, and vs scrapper or ele i’d need 3 times the boon corruption to keep up with their boon spammage.

In team situation necro can do some great things indeed. But usually in my games “team situation” means other team gangs up on me…

Case is simple – the moment i swap my pet, any combo field it created is deemed void and null as if it died. It’s still displayed as if nothing happened, but no combo finisher will interact with it, 0 reaction.

Unless the pet really did die, this should not be the case as pet swapping is a core ranger mechanic and concious usage of it is to be rewarded not punished. Currently clarion bond is useless as a blast finisher if the field was pet-made. But it’s not just clarion bond. Ancestral grace also won’t interact with pet combo field if it’s caster pet got swapped beforehand, proving my above point.

I think this is a pretty big bug from a gameplay standpoint, hope it’ll get fixed soon.

Life blast has seen some good changes, but it’s abysmal cast speed is killing build diversity hard. As it stands Dhuumfire is reaper exclusive trait. If you switched current life blast to it’s underwater version’s damage and cast speed (faster casts, smaller damage) that would make for more viable core necro condi build, and everyone (save our enemies ofc) would be happy.

I like GW2. A lot. I like to spvp a lot too. But there are some things you cannot go easy on. Like the horrid UI/UX pitfalls I’m forced to deal with every game.

You play in blue team all’s fine -your teammates are always blue, be they downed/dead/standing.

You play in red – you’re in for some Mesmer level deception. If it’s red – is it teammate or enemy? And when it’s downed and red/blue – which the hell is it?
Yes I know the answers but they’re not intuitive. When making split second decisions, you have no time to remember mini map color scheme intricacies!

5. the miliscule exit button in the right bottom corner. This thing should be smack dab in the middle of the screen, right under match statistics. I shouldn’t have to go play precision clicks to leave a game that’s already done.

The idea of pvp game is for players to fight vs other players on equal ground.
Not for players to fight with the UI, and resort to 3rd party software solutions to get intuitive, unobtrusive and reliable interaction with the interface!

the point of new end game content is for it to be harder and to be a challenge, not same old. I’m very happy with HoT difficulty, even if mushrooms make me wanna kill every fungi in existence and burn anything with more then 10% common DNA with it

But that’s how you learn and improve, by challenge. And the maps are hard to navigate, but that’s what makes them fun and challenging and not 3 hour challenge of the day, then next one.

theory: mmr will provide balanced team compositions.

practice:

If you play good you’ll be paired with teammates that spend 2/3 of match off point or fight ad infinitum over getting graveyard in foefire legacy while other two points are capped by enemy team..

If you play bad, dw you’ll get strong teammembers to carry you. Yay mmr!

As in title. Some backpacs are epic. Some 2h weapons are pure ownage. But the epic proportion clipping when both end up on your back is not.

So my simple suggestion – give us option to hide backpack when something else lands on our back to avoid that mess.

Got back from a break some 2 weeks ago or so – it’s pretty kitten fun. Lotsa things to do and master (like collections, map discovery, adventures). There are things to work torward to, just be patient, you can’t have it all at once.

You either want to wait, as next gen graphics cards are becoming current gen, so there will be opportunities for previous season models real soon, or just wait out the novelty tax on new staff, or you want to go Dell (inspiron 7559).

Clevo is a risk, they aren’t known for their build quality. While from dell you can get “house call” technician guarantee for little extra. Given how gaming rigs aren’t your cheapest buy, and aren’t always build for endurance (because most bang for your buck goes into power of internals) I would highly advice the manufacturer who will be there for you if things go south.

necro – humans cough Grenth cough
guardian – also humans – seraph and their generally defensive fighting style
mesmer – yup, humans again (Anise, Jennah)

elementalist – asura – small, brainy, and only ele to have access to poison fields.
thief – sylvari/human – we know what caithe does for a living…but humans got plenty of shady characters too.
ranger – norn/sylvari/charr – sylvari are nature themed by default. Charr love to train pets for combat, and are part animals themselves so fits too.

engineer – asura/charr – brains and no religious/magical nonsense required.
warrior – norn/charr – it’s obvious – the bigger and more bloodthirsty the better!
revenant – norn/human/one charr who shall not be named. – norn can go to the mists with help of their shamans. Priests of Grenth also can gain access via their rituals.

Ok, long story short – pre hot I run this awesome 2 man guild, that despite shortage of manpower got pretty far (lvl 5 upgrades on all).

Now some time later (and owning HoT) I’m thinking of claiming guilded hollow for myself. Question: Will my pre-hot guild progress be carried over to the guild hall, or am I forced to do everything from scratch?

I’ll also praise BF for finally letting the the highest gliding mastery have some love and meaning.

I will however critique it’s visuals – we basically got red branded zone mixed with jungle. I love to bits the jungles of this game, especially verdant brink and auric basin. I hope the next map will feature less “red sun world” and more natural jungle beauty. If you need a new theme for it, as to not be copy-pasta of already existing jungle maps, do try mixing high tops where gliding matters a lot (or a long fall) – like super canopy from Verdant Brink) along with mountain ranges that are less sandstone (like in VB case) and more solid rock, but drilled into swiss cheese by water streams, creating caverns full of luminescent moss, and darker foliage.

Kinda combination of VB base level +canopy (more terrain like on base level, but higher like foliage) with Chinese style giant vertical rocks, riddled with natural water-stream-made mazes occasionaly pierced by outside sunlight from hollows and rifts in their structure.

I’d buy that for a dollar!

Funny thing is, that a necro would kill for a skill like that – it’s just that bad stacking bleeds on a necro. For ranger however, that is indeed bottom of the barrel. Why waste a precious slot for it when we got shortbow, sharpened edges and tons of bleeds from pet..
