Chronomancer Buffs Across Board?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Zelulose.8695

Zelulose.8695

As a mesmer main. Mesmer has been op. I’ve been saying this since before HoT but they never fix them. Their issue is healing the have to much healing and condition clear. That’s the reason the go into stealth and appear somewhere else at full hp. It isn’t short CD it is too much healing. The inspiration trait-line needs to be spread out or nerfed. Idefender didn’t need the nerf. The healing condition removal traits did.

One phantasm. The dis-enchanter is enough to keep conditions off of you and prevent your opponent from might stacking for damage or regen stacking for sustain. Try it out. They dont need all of the extra sustain. (The next one that takes the cake for too much sustain is revanent.)

Suggestion: Preset builds

in PvP

Posted by: Zelulose.8695

Zelulose.8695

Ok This is not what gw2 is about. Let me explain. GW1 and GW2 allow customizable builds so players can experiment and find their own personal nich.

The problem. GW2 doesn’t have enough diversity to truely have many meta builds per class. I’m talking 5+ decent builds per class as was seen in GW1.

This fix you suggest is what they are doing right now. They are limiting players with each amulet they take away to slowly kill diversity. It is true we needed a sustain nerf but removing amulets is the wrong lazy way to do it. Eventually, if this continues, there will be only one or two anet/nerf directed meta build per class with no strange exception builds to try out like in GW1.

The core issue. They need to add at least 5 times the set of skills each class has to see the diversity of Guildwars 1 and balance from there. It is already bad enough that we have preset weapon slot skills.

Then you have power creep. People hate that too. How would you like them to have never nerfed stealth since beta? Thief could attack and instantly re-stealth with no reveal. If you faced that nonsense you wouldn’t be so upset about nerfs. Also you forget the self resurrecting bunker rangers that were nearly immortal 3 vs 1 which was pure kitten because they could also kill you. Nerfs happened for a good reason. You might like an op class but that doesn’t mean other class mains like having their class looked down on 100% of the time. Allow a class to shine and hope that the nerfs move in the direction promoting a display of skill rather than spam.

People who hate nerfs usually can’t adapt quickly enough. That is a reflection of IQ. There will always be one weak class but at least nerfs and buffs can let players try out a new class and enjoy doing well with it. It is more convenient for the community as a whole to balance. If not for satisfaction it is pointless because every time you weaken a class you will strengthen another. Balance is a good way to give more than one set of players the spotlight.

I would present two types of tiers and rank the top 5.

Broken tier (Easy play obvious advantage)

God Tier (High skill cap. Even high than the general skill required to play a class decently)

The God tier have the most potential. The Broken tier are an uphill battle to face unless you outplay them but they can only go so far.

Broken Tier (Strongest 1- Weakest 5)

1) Druid
2) Condi/Chronomancer
3) Scrapper
4) Revanent
5) Thief

God Tier (Strongest 1- Weakest 5)

1) Revanant
2) Thief
3) Engineer in general
4) Mesmer in general
5) Druid.

It should be noted that Classes like Guardian, Warrior, Necromancer and Elementalist are limited in their easy builds and their skill floor.

This is strictly 1 vs 1 although many of those classes are also powerful in tpvp.
This opinion comes from observing which class is most likely to win while spectating similar builds.

What Ismael and Silv said. You want something? You pay for it. The game you play is basically a free version, you buy the game to get access to everything. Simple stuff really..

That would be a bait and switch.

They’re experience has been intentionally diminished and held hostage behind a pay wall.

I can’t believe I’m arguing this because it should just be common sense… but here we go.

Your experience was never diminished… everything you paid for 4 years ago is still there and you can still do it. You can still do pvp, wvw and pve without HOT. The only difference is that there is new content exclusive to the expansion pack.

When you buy a game you are entitled to the content you paid for. You can still access all that content without any paywall. Anet has no legal obligation for you to enjoy that content though. Just because the content Anet created may prevent you from ENJOYING that content without the expansion pack does not mean they locked the content you paid for behind a paywall. All your content is accessible just as it always was, you just no longer enjoy it as much as you used to.

Here is a good example, lets say you buy a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 because it is the fastest street legal car and you like to street race. The car is touted as the “fastest street legal car”. You win all your races. Next year a Bugatti Veyron 16.5 comes out that is faster and now you start losing. Does that mean Bugatti “bait and switched” you? No it doesn’t.

Not quite. Theyre selling you the license to race so to speak.

This would be paying a lump sum of money to enter a competition where you must pick from a fixed selection of cars of your choice to race, under the premise that this is all you will ever have to pay in order to be competitive in this tournament (anet by their own words said the elite specs are not meant to be an upgrade).
Next year they tell you that if you pay another fee equal to the first sum of money you paid, you may gain access to faster cars and if you do not you may still race but never win.

“You can either leave this room or I will shoot you, its your choice”.

What you fail to realize is that neither anet or your fictitious racing company have any obligation for you to be competitive in their games. While Anet strives for balance they have no legal obligation that says they can’t release new content which makes old players worse.

A bait and switch is marketing a false price for a service only to increase that price later. Anet never told you “we aren’t releasing new specs ever” nor did they promise vanilla specs would be even remotely competitive. Anet sold you a game for $60 of which all the content is still playable. They promised you game content for a price and gave you all of that content for the stipulated price. If you no longer enjoy the game because you die at it, it is not their problem.

Honestly if you don’t get it at this point I don’t know what to tell you. As they say, you can’t argue with stupid. That being said before you continue calling what Anet did a bait and switch, let me ask what law school you went to? For the record I go to Osgoode.

In other words you’re admitting what I’m describing, that being said yes I’m using the laymen definition of ‘’bait and switch" here. While it’s not illegal it’s intentional frowned up business techniques they’re using to sell the expansion.

They made the content that was previously sold obsolete. Or as a pvp player are you seriously trying to tell me that a pvp platform has any value, use or meaning to a competitive player if they cannot win?

For the record, they did promise the base specs would remain competitive. In their own words, the elite specs are not supposed to be an upgrade.

Just because you can log onto the game does not mean it is playable to a competitive pvp player of he cannot win. It’s always a gateway to a game going down the drain when it’s player’s irrationally defend the interests of the company rather than the players. The company’s profits =/= player’s enjoyment. Any competitive pvp player for one reason or the other who cannot buy the further expansions are forced to give up the game as a whole, the game that they bought has been given an expiry date.

Maybe it would make it easier to understand if anet released a mechanic such that, when you buy the expansion your stats are double that of those who only have the core game. Does that seem so innocent now?

It is true. Core mesmer is not viable compared to chrono. You can try but it is simply weaker and an uphill battle to make it effective.

The PvP team probably thinks adding more game modes would hurt pvp. But from what I see not adding 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3, and 4 vs 4 game modes along with balance for the respective modes is players leaving the game.

A game that forces players to play how it is designed rather than the way players want will slowly decay. This is why they had to go free to play for Pvp they just can’t figure out why their game is having trouble and the players are telling them. Not just in the forums. You could go ingame, online polls, or redit.

I have been for other game modes since beta but they never added even when players asked for 1 vs 1 or even a simple dueling feature. The same goes for 2 vs 2 and 3 vs 3.

I wanted this a long time ago. I theorized that balancing 1 vs 1 as well kitten vs 5 would result in the most overall balance. Looking at 5 vs 5 alone may toxic variation like we see with all the condition spamming, healing, and passive/active defenses.

Right now 5 vs 5 balance creates the notion that if a seemingly op build dies in a 1 vs 5 it is not too tank. if a condition build cant take out one in a 1 vs 3-5 then it is balanced. But this of course simply isn’t true. 1 vs 1 and 5 vs 5 balance would help spvp allot.

Bunker Ruins the Game

Posted by: Zelulose.8695

Zelulose.8695

Some classes and some builds are forced out of higher end PvP because bunker outclasses them.

These leads to build inequality and forces you to play bunker meta instead of having more choices.

Bunker needs to be tapered down a bit so that other builds are more viable.

Some classes/builds have way too much defense.

Lol.

Bunker build are fine (high defense, low damage).

It’s Bruiser build that are not (and were always OPed) that have bunker defenses and dps damage (or so).

Main problem here, is the Paladin amulet and most new block/evade from HoT specs.

They honestly need to fix classes rather than fix the amulets at this rate we wont have any amulets left with toughness or vitality or healing power. They have added some (although many are just effective condition amulets.) But they have already removed Settlers amulet and Soldiers amulet. If they keep removing amulets Build diversity will become more limited.

Bunker Ruins the Game

in PvP

Zelulose.8695

They need to make thief more depending on initiative. HS damage isn’t bound to initiative. It has low costs and it does the same damage whatever initiative points you have left.
You don’t sacrifice your defense by using HS, you still can shadowstep away and your initiative is regenerating fast, you still can dodge, you still can roll away, restealth and everything is on a very small cooldown.
The balance between damage, defense and mobility is really bad. There should be a much higher risk of failing such as other glass cannons. If you jump into combat with a full berserker guardian, you pretty much have one chance of killing something and if you make one slight mistake you end up dead. Thief is much more forgiving.

There is a reason why thief is the #1 roaming class in wvw since beta. It’s mobility, damage, the low risk gameplay and the option to reset fights at will.
It’s not that bad in spvp, but thieves are the reasons we had bunker builds in this game. There were other high burst classes, but they all got hit by the nerf hammer one day, only thieves are allowed to exist in that niche

The resets are a problem. I remember asking anet to nerf perma stealth. Instead they opted for rock paper scissors balance and introduced the ability to reveal stealth ed opponents. This ridiculous change made many thieves nonviable for a while before they swapped to a more evade/burst style of play because a class counter was introduced. A thief that is running a stealth based build is guaranteed to lose to the classes with reveal. The problem was always their resets not stealth. Instead Bound gave them an easier time using smoke field so they can perma stealth still just be hard countered by classes that bring reveal. This is one step towards skilless game-play.

That is actually a good idea. But thieves don’t need backstab to one shot people. Its really the mug/Bound syncing that is one shotting people with skills like flurry or pulmonary impact. It is un-blockable too thanks to Basilisk Venom. They have been receiving power creep slowly. Mug/Bound is the new mug pre-critical chance nerf with an extra 1k. In other words its presence due to power creep is like the balance teem admitting they made a mistake nerfing mug. It was a mistake.

Also, I don’t agree with any un-blockable un-dodgeable skills Period. As they encourage random attack spamming These ideodic changes came in response to shield mesmer so they couldn’t perma block. Logic would said Why give mesmer blocks on-top of all their defenses in the first place

This game is quickly becoming rock paper scissors. Where everything, Block, stealth, armor, conditions have a specific counter spec. It isn’t there 100% yet but at this rate it is coming and player will again leave as they are guaranteed to lose against a player/team they outplay simply because he as a counter skill set to their build. The driving force of this terrible form of balance are bunker currently.

The reasons condi is out of hand

in PvP

Posted by: Zelulose.8695

Zelulose.8695

You have to realize condition’s are out of hand because condition removal is out of hand. they need to tone down both. In the past some builds couldn’t even incorporate condition removal. Now most builds can incorporate traits and skills for condition removal. Its a power creep issue. More condition removal required more conditions. Dare Devil thief can now remove conditions on dodge if they forgo pulmonary impact. As if removing conditions in stealth wasn’t enough for them their acro/trickery trait-line also has condition removal. So do their commonly used utility such as shadow step. This is just one example I used because it is one of the weakest classes right now. The other classes are in a more broken state.

Bunker Ruins the Game

They do need to ad IDC on pulmonary impact and nerf the evades on weapons so they have a precast and aftercast dealay of 1/2 a second similar to the delay before casting pistol-whip or casting flanking strike. This would have to be added to staff/Shortbow/ and D/D. Then bunkers can be fixed effectively. Right now the issue is that without bunkers, thieves could just head-shot spam during a group fight and kill someone while also preventing their skill output and are becoming perma evade bunkers in response to the bunker meta.

Pvp broken beyond repair?

in PvP

Posted by: Zelulose.8695

Zelulose.8695

Well they did add an unblockable class with short CD evades and blocks (4 in total) between sword/sword and staff on revenant. Allong with the damage to practically one shot people, be unblockable, and reveal stealth while having two healing skills and free protection/regeneration/fury. Ofcourse this game would be broken. And oh wait? There is another class with healing and condition removal on shatter 50% damage reduction and even more weapon set defenses than revenant including stealth utilities. This of course is only trumped by a scrapper that hits like a thief with a.a. and stealth and is hard to kill thanks to stealth gyro/healing turret. But that is the tip of the iceberg as druid can heal 10k health with one skill not including the healing it gets on staff and the healing skill it has slotted or even the healing it can get from it’s traits. In reality this power creep broke the game.

Why the current match making isn't fun

in PvP

Posted by: Zelulose.8695

Zelulose.8695

Its not just the fact that the system stacks classes, its deeper then that, im talking about a system that puts solo players vs 4 men premades and duos vs 5 men premades, im talking about having on the same team players that insta die and double capp and die to svanir while others are wining 1vs 2.
Do u think MM is working ok?
This is why im giving feedback to anet, so they can understand this mess and fix it.
Because i really think in season 4 only players that didnt get the wings yet will be playing.
Ask yourself are you having fun in pvp?
Im not, and for that im here posting.
I used to play much more pvp, and now i barely play , and when i play i actually play unranked.
I play other classes , but not every one plays, and we shouldnt have to compensate game afted game for this bad MM.
Also not every one can play every class with the same skill.
So lets try to get anet to fix MM.

I believe that premades and solo joins should be two different game types…. as it was when pvp first began in GW2.

…but dwindling population has caused anet to merge the two to make a more active player base…. and that is the system we have now.

I would much rather prefer a system similar to the Random and Team Arenas of the original Guild Wars title, where solo joins only face against solo joins…. they stay with the same team until they lose…. and continue doing so until they win a set number of matches together, (they have proven themselves to be competent enough both with player skill and composition), and they are set to face against premade teams.

You also bonded with the players on your team in solo join more, since you continued onto the next match with them. You learned their strengths and weaknesses.

In gw2 you are extremely unlikely to get placed on a team and have an instant connection with them, and after the match ends, win or lose, you are back in the lobby.

You also couldn’t join a premade arena with a party size less than the allowed maximum, and for this reason, solo joins weren’t even allowed at all in this system.

Gw1 had it right.
Gw2 had it wrong, and continues to get it wrong with every change an update brings.

On a side not my favorite GW1 moments were playing RA and winning so much that you end up in Team arenas. I just had a though that a random solo que where the player remains in the team they won with and gets fished into the next match would be fun. Furthermore, if they win 10 matches they end up against premades to be fair. This would give everyone the chance realistically to get their legendary back pieces in solo que but of-course would be way to easy for ranking up. Still miss the RA style game mode thought.

Agree with OP and refer to my signature…

Nerf the duck out of everything, lower damage, raise cooldown timers, lower condititon application, lower boon application, remove most of the trait damage modifiers, and make most (if not all) traitlines useful for either pvp or pve as many are useless for both.

Let me add to all the wonderful things you have just mentioned: They need to reduce condition application and overkill condition removal.

I agree with that, but I honestly meant nerf EVERYTHING including the stuff I didn’t mention such as the stupid, insane, no skill, low cooldown, passive stuns and cc’s.

Ya I noted that skills like pulmonary shot were going to destroy the game. They need to give it a ICD like 20 seconds or so. It is not op it is just annoying and kind of troll to face headshot spam.

Why Stealth cannot capture points??

in PvP

Posted by: Zelulose.8695

Zelulose.8695

The real problem is troll Thieves.

Scenario1: You are capping a point and there is no enemies around. Your own teammate, a Thief, but he is a troll. He spams stealth on you, completely stopping you or him from capping the point, until an enemy shows up to cap the point, at which point he runs away in a corner to recharge his skills/initiative. Once you kill the enemy, he(with recharged skills and initiative) puts stealth on you again. You never capture the point. Stepping out of range of his Shortbow blasts or Shadow’s Refuge does not work, because if you step out of the point to avoid his Stealth, you are not capping.

Scenario2: You are defending a point which is 1 tick away from being taken by the enemy. You and the enemy are both on the point contesting it. If you step out, the enemy caps the point. Your troll Thief teammate comes in and puts stealth on you the moment he sees you heal(not attacking). This scenario actually happens unintentionally(non-troll) more often than you think, specially in cases where you are downed and still contesting for as long as possible, the Thief puts Shadow’s Refuge on you and starts reviving you, but you lose the point because both of you went Stealth.

Why devs still allow this kind of nonsense in PvP is beyond comprehension.

This is another reason why stealth should contest. Thief can simply aoe stealth their team using combo fields or SR. Thief right now is a hindrance to their team if they bring stealth not to mention if you do need to be seen you can now be revealed by revenant which is pretty much a greater version of thief really and offer way more to a team in terms of damage and boon share.

Ya but I used to play in gambling servers and they were shut down by the mods. It was a sad day. They clearly don’t support it in a similar way to how they are against 1 vs 1 in any form.

Why Stealth cannot capture points??

I think that’s the issue. The Thief has no true role in conquest. It can decap ONLY IF the enemy leaves a point open. Outside of that, the Thief is limited to engaging only enemies that are already matched man for man… and only when not in the midst of AoE spamfest.

Yes. Thieves are more mobile than most classes, they are meant to be wingers, hopping from conflict to conflict as needed. If you stay in one spot too long you probably aren’t helping as best you could. If there is no one on a point, decap it. If there is someone on a point, ignore it. If there is a 1v1, tip the balance in your favor. If there is a general melee, then there is a weaker fight happening elsewhere.

What I’m saying is that the Thief is a dependent profession. In the current game, the only thing it can do independently is run to an empty point. And again, in order for the Thief to even do that, the enemy has to choose to leave it open.

This is true of other classes too though. A support/bunker Ele is fairly worthless without team support, because they can’t take a point 1v1 from a good enemy, they can only hold one already taken. Thieves are the opposite, they can take, but not hold.

I think that if any change were made to thieves, it would be in giving them a way to bypass certain defenses on a limited basis, so that they can be more effective at bursting bunkers, but being able to stealth cap, or even stealth hold a point would make them too OP.

Of all the options across all the professions, we are limited to these 6 options to apply reveal. 2 of these options require a target to use, meaning they have to be used on someone before they enter stealth. That leaves us with 4 options to bring players out of stealth with. Of those 4 options, only 2 of them are capable of making it into any of the meta builds.

Yes, there aren’t enough reveal skills, plus no class should be so powerful that it demands a specific counter be added to the mix. I mean, there are various abilities that are useful against specific opponents, but those same abilities also tend to have uses in all sorts of encounters. Reveal is so specific to anti-stealth that it’s unreasonable to expect people to slot it.

The only way I’d think that would make sense is if most Reveal abilities also had strong secondary effects that made them worth using even when no Thieves were around, like a strong buff or damage effect. That way, if a Thief is around? Great, you can reveal them. If no stealth is around? You can still pop the ability anyway and get some use out of it. It’s not worth just having the ability sit there the entire match in the hopes that some annoying Thief or Scrapper will wander by.

I hate to burst anyone’s bubble but currently thief is one of the weakest classes. They can be good but they realistically cannot take a point quickly anymore. If they could still take points quickly then this topic wouldn’t be necessary but right now they are only every other class damage wise with less ability to survive and less ability to cap.

Right now thief only has one useful aspect in pvp unique for other classes. Mobility. They can fight then they can run or rush to points that sadly they cannot contest. That is it. But damage is probably done better by a warrior or mesmer as they have more and can continue to put on the pressure needed to kill a bunker.

I play more evade based thief in pvp personally because stealth based thieves literally have to deal with being the first one at enemy home (their far) then losing it to one bunker because they cannot contest it and take too long to kill the bunker. This makes them kinda useless. They cant kill fast enough they cant cap well enough really all they can do is run around mooching off a zerging team and they don’t need mobility to follow their team any class can zerg with a team.

It also gets worse as full condition builds suffer unless they go slightly tank condition. Certain classes get completely shut down because of this. For example. Mesmer has way too much condition clear. They have the option to remove conditions on torch skills, healing skills,. mantras, mindwrack condition removal, or fields, arcane thievery, signets, or simply the dis enchanter. The idefender even takes half of their condition damage. This makes them immune to conditions literally. Necromancer has very limited condition removal by comparison as they must hit their opponent for the bulk of their removal. And unlike mesmer they cannot just distortion to avoid condition application. As a result. Necromancer is strong at aoe condition aplication but is basically a walking punching bag that couldn’t dent a mesmer speced against it even if it tried. The same applies to other less bunker based condition builds. They simply cannot kill the few classes that have pretty much have condition immunity.

There are a few classes like ranger and mesmer who have a ridiculous share of defenses. One would think with their damage reduction traits they should at least die to conditions. But no these classes are superior in both defense damage reduction and condition removal. And don’t even get me started on scrapper or tempest. The other classes simply cannot compare with this level of bunking as there is so much defense available for these class that thieves are being forced into evade spamming builds and other classes are forced to play some bunker variant of their favorite builds.

While condition damage is often requested to be nerfed by me I also would request a nerf to condition removal as it is so ridiculous right now that condition builds 100% cannot kill a condition removal build even eventually. There is no skill involved in this especially when the higher condition output comes from builds that are immune to conditions (druid and chronomancer).

Agree with OP and refer to my signature…

Nerf the duck out of everything, lower damage, raise cooldown timers, lower condititon application, lower boon application, remove most of the trait damage modifiers, and make most (if not all) traitlines useful for either pvp or pve as many are useless for both.

Let me add to all the wonderful things you have just mentioned: They need to reduce condition application and overkill condition removal.

.

I firmly believe that if mesmers and thieves cannot contest a point with stealth at least, then guardians and warriors and rangers and engineers shouldn’t be able to contest a point while evading or blocking. The same goes to necromancer Deathshroud.

You are comparing apples and twinkies. Endure pain has a 60s CD and can still be targeted and even killed with condis. Stealth on the other hand can be maintained with 100% uptime by thieves and engis, mesmers have some too. It would be stupid spamming AoE skills blindly. Also, making evades not contest would hurt the one who can dodge 12 times in a row.
I cant believe this thread is still running. Thieves cant fill every role and that is fine. Why cant my necro fill zerker roamer role or bunker support

You do know that stealth can be revealed… There is plenty of stealth counter-play currently. So much that stealth is becoming nonviable.

Mesmer isn’t a supporter and their sustain got nerfed whenever they removed that last amulet, not to mention the mesmer bunker build was nerfed into oblivion. And elementalist does almost no damage with their support build, it’s way too difficult to play that build properly and is very boring, and if you’re not super pro the druid support build is hard to do also.

A thread just popped up on this issue. I am not the only one noticing a sustain issue. Bunker Ruins the Game

Good for them, they can say whatever they want maybe you should go type on that thread then. You guys can keep complaining about people not getting 1 shotted quick enough until everyone’s favorite builds keep getting nerfed into oblivion so you can 1 shot them even quicker. My point was though that you guys don’t speak for most of the people in the game.

What is with you and one shots? A terrible assumption is being made that I love squishy assassins that one shot people. I mainly run bunker builds and one shotting is not an issue for any half decent player including myself. I may not be #1 but I sure don’t get one shotted. I don’t call for sustain nerfs so that I can one shot. That will never happen. I call for sustained healing and defense nerfs so that you cant out heal a player built for full damage for more than 2-3 minutes.

But getting back on topic I had previously noted that the other two elements required to help pvp are rewards and regular balance patches. These are essential in addition to the sustain nerf aimed at rewarding skillful gameplay.

Edit: May I add Anet Launched this game with the goal in mind that there would be no more holy trinity

you should even out at a 50/50 win loss once you hit the spot where u belong.

Until you get to that point, you should be steadily climbing.

Wrong that is not how MMR works. The more you win the worse team mates your are given to balance the Team MMR It in reality is trying to force you to have a 50/50 win-rate regardless of your division. The only advantage you have is having a whole team that is above your division to beat this kind system. otherwise the more you lose the better players you are paired with. The more you win the worse players you are pared with. Fortunately there is one good thing. The players are relatively close to your division so you aren’t pairing legendaries with sapphire.

thast not true.

according to anet the game finds 10 players , then it puts the best 5 in 1 team.
so if u keep winning , u will b ein the team with the best players.

I thought they changed that but I could be wrong. In anycase, if this is true then how do they find the best 5? score? or win/loss. Because if it is win/loss teams would never ever mix up and people would be losing just because their stuck on the losing team. Its just a hunch but I’m pretty sure their not doing that since the mmr system got implemented.

Not every class fills every role

I think that’s the issue. The Thief has no true role in conquest. It can decap ONLY IF the enemy leaves a point open.

Well, they can also kill a lone defender really fast and then cap. With their huge mobility, they can also be anywhere a +1 is needed (or where enemy has left the point open/underdefended).

A thief cannot quickly kill a decent lone point holder they have too many passive defenses to die quickly.
