[Suggestion] Surface water should have skills

Recently, I found myself in some water in Orr and attacked by a risen. If I were on land, or under the water, I could have done something to save myself. Trouble was, I was on the surface of the water, where our skills are disabled. That didn’t end well.

I’d like to make the suggestion for anet’s consideration, if it’s possible, that being on the surface of the water should allow us the same skills as being under water.

Or, if I’m misunderstanding the situation, is there any way to use a skill when on the water’s surface?

Guild Halls need more

What guild halls need first and foremost is to remember which waypoints you’ve unlocked for each guild you’re in, so when you switch representations and come back to one all the waypoints aren’t locked again. It’s tedious and detracts from using the hall to its fullest.

Suggestions: NPCs by bank, Mystic Forge

It’s not a game-breaker, OriOri, but it is a design methodology that detracts from the game experience. And, if nothing else, I don’t think it even succeeds at doing what it was ostensibly designed to do: create the impression of a living world. These NPCs are standing or walking around so that cities don’t feel empty when there’s fewer players in them. That’s good in principle, but there’s a flaw in the implementation.

When you go to get a coffee from a cafe in the real world and there’s a guy standing at the counter waiting on his, is it your first intention to talk to the other customer or order your coffee? I’d wager it’s the latter. But imagine if every time you went to get a coffee you inadvertently spoke to the other customer. And then someone told you that all you have to do to talk to the counter person is move further away from the customer, or go to the other end of the counter and address the counter person there? You’d tell them to kitten off, wouldn’t you?

And what if the customer who was in your way kept spouting the kinds of quotes gw2’s npcs spout? You’d think they were crazy and you’d probably start going to a different coffee shop.

People have raised this issue countless times, myself included, because it’s a silly design. You can keep the NPCs. They’re fine. Just don’t give their Talk actions priority over the vendors they crowd around.

Or – better still – don’t give them Talk actions at all! What’s the point? They usually have only one line of dialogue and there’s no reason to talk to them. All it does is highlight that they’re just scripted automatons. For the sake of immersion alone, these one-liner NPCs should just go about their business without needing to talk to us. I’d be fine with dozens more silent npcs all over the place, if that would help with immersion.

+1 on the instance idea. All adventures need to be instances. Salvage Pit, the easiest adventure there is, is suicide with other people in it. Red circles everywhere..shudder

I don’t even want the mastery point. I just want to complete gold on each adventure, for the challenge of it. But the real challenge is trying to find time on the adventure when it’s not locked or being interrupted, as you’ve pointed out.

In that case, what exactly is the “guild’s time zone”? Perhaps it would be more helpful if the game showed each user’s personal time zone against their name, at least in the Guild Roster?

Enter should work, but it doesn’t. Because the dialog doesn’t follow Windows GUI standards of operation. The default choice should be highlighted and you’d use arrows or tab to move it to the other choice if you didn’t want the default choice. If this was the case, enter or space should work. But that’s not the way they set it up to work.

Agree ^ with this prompt and several others where a default key should be available.

I have a mesmer park at Portmatt’s Lab. I spent 800 gems (which I bought with IRL money) to make that character, levelled him. When he got to 80, I parked him there. I won’t use that character again until the next time it’s a ‘Daily Portmatt’s Jumping Puzzle’ to help others get their dailies.

That’s clever! We had a guild trek recently and that jp turns out to be a trek spot – and a really annoying one. It sucks to solve that jp under a time limit when your guild is depending on you. I’ll have to look at parking there.

Using a portal to the end of a JP should not award absolutely anything.
Mes should still be able to use ports to as a tool to actually do the JP by himself or with a party.. but straight up teleporting to the very end of a JP should not be a thing.

What you’re overlooking, amongst many other good reasons for portals, is fellow guildies who don’t have the confidence to do a jp the first time. You portal them up, they get a reward, it takes the pressure off them and they attempt the jp again themselves. Their pride demands it. And they solve it themselves. Portals aren’t evil. They’re just another learning tool.

And @Radiobiology – the only thing jps need to make them greater (not great again since they’re fine as they are) is more jps. Many, many more jps. With interesting mechanics that take creative thought to solve, rather than brute force trial and error. With Indiana Jones style traps that require split second timing. And – a personal wish – I prefer jps without monsters to fight. There’s enough fighting everywhere else in the game. I’d prefer jps with challenging environmental scenarios. Just my 2 coppers.

Suggestion for long lasting mastery system

Why has XP got to keep rewarding people? I really dont get this obsession with ‘wasted XP’. It’s not wasted XP, its just not relevant to you right now. As soon as new mastery tracks are added, it’ll be relevant again. Deal with it. I’ve had maxed masteries for months now and I honestly can’t see what people are obsessing about.

Giving more loot for doing PvE is just distasteful and causes even more imbalance between modes. The game mode which gets you the most gold/hr ratio out of all 3 game modes and you want more?

I don’t get why every thread on this subject has to have a post like this. This is a game about personal progression and xp is one significant measure of that. When I see that XP text flash up after I kill something I feel that progression. When I know that xp is going nowhere, I feel like something I’ve earned is going to waste. But that’s just me. I’m not sure why you think that’s obsessive or distasteful but whatever.

This conversation intrigued me because I recently tried different builds, including conditions. I crafted a whole set of Vipers and Sinister armour and weapons. I was exited to try conditions in open world… but I discovered pretty soon why people have said don’t bother with them in open world. Sure, they do kill, but slowly. You can solo a condition build, but it takes more running around, dodging, reapplying conditions, waiting for things to die. I went back to my glass cannon berserker build and even in HOT it’s more effective and more fun. :/

Inconsistencies in Story Achievements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Hello again OriOri,

The buffs only show you achievements that you are eligible to receive. Any achievement that actually requires you to finish the instance to receive will continue to tell you that you are eligible for it even after you finish the requirements.

What about cheevos that don’t require you to finish the instance yet remain? Dark Path is, I think, awarded as soon as you get past the dark path yet the instance hasn’t finished. And it remains after it’s earned.

Likewise, achievements that require a special starting condition will sometimes not show until that condition is met because until it is you won’t be eligible for it

Yes, that’s what I said too. I was just suggesting it would be clearer if it were indicated as locked beforehand. What would you think of that kind of display?

For your other complaints, the chak killer is the only HoT story achievement that doesn’t show progress iirc

Complaints? Lol. Okay. So, if this is the only cheevo (actually two – expert and master) that doesn’t show progress (I’ll have to take your word for that), where does that leave us? Is there a minimum number of cheevos that must not show progress before it’s allowed to be mentioned? As with all my ..uhm ..complaints.. I’m just noting this curiosity down in case it helps with achievements in a future expansion.

..and for your last point it doesn’t mock the story. You fought your way across SW with a full team facing enemies you knew how to fight. You fought your way through VB with most of your team with you at all times, again fighting mostly mordrem enemies (which you are familiar with) with some local saurians. Same thing with AB. Yet in the instance with the chak killer achievement, you have never seen a chak before and its just you and Bram. Not to mention that if you go exploring more in TD and DS you will notice that at the bottom of the pit there is an entrance to a chak hive. For the purposes of the instance its closed. But to your character and Bram it could very well be open lorewise and hundreds more chak could come pouring out to join the fight. On top of that even, you never fought ~60 tough enemies at once with your group in any of those other maps, yet that is approximately how many chak are in that pit.

I’m not sure what point you’re making here. You’re agreeing with the story that it’s too much to handle – yet the cheevo requires you to do just that. Maybe mocking is the wrong word. It’s at least contradictory. As you say.. you’ve never fought ~60 tough enemies at once with your group… and yet suddenly you’re able to fight them solo?
Clearly, cheevos aren’t supposed to be within the lore of the story, and that’s fine. It was just a hilarious turn-around on the part of the commander.

Anyway, thanks for your time.

Inconsistencies in Story Achievements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

I’ve recently been completing a lot of story achievements in HOT and noticed some annoying inconsistencies in how achievements are handled. This may be a problem with story achievements in central too, but I haven’t done those lately so I’ll just talk about HOT.
This isn’t a complaint per so. There’s nothing earth-shattering here. I’m getting through these and will continue to do so no matter what. I don’t think it’s even worth addressing in HOT, but I wanted to mention it for consideration before the next expansion as a design situation to think more carefully about. Achievements are a big part of the game and a lot of fun, with some niggling issues:

1. CHEEVOS THAT DON’T INDICATE PROGRESS

Most recently, I completed the Chak Killer – Expert/Master cheevos in Tangled Depths. The problem with these is that they require you to kill 15/50 chak respectively but they don’t show you how many chak you’ve killed. You can put them in your cheevo watch panel and they’ll always say 0% until the moment you’ve killed enough chak. This makes you wonder if the chak you’re killing are registering and is inconsistent with other cheevos which do show progress. This may be because the achievements themselves display only an unfinished state (0) or finished (1), without the stages that many other cheevos have. Why not display x/50 chak on the cheevo? Additionally, there’s no mention of how many chak you need to kill anywhere in the game – I had to find it on Dulfy, which seems a strange omission.

2. THE WAYS IN WHICH CHEEVOS SHOW PROGRESS

Of the achievements that do show progress, some show it merely in the cheevo display in your hero panel, some show it in the yellow icon on your buff bar ….and some, if I remember correctly, have an additional buff in your buffs bar that shows progress. The consistent thing would be if the yellow cheevo icons always listed progress. They already disappear if you become ineligible. It makes sense they’d give you all the info you needed.

3. CHEEVOS THAT STAY AFTER FINISHING

There are some cheevos (I think the Dark Path one in Roots of Terror is one) whose yellow icon stays on after you’ve already gained them, giving you the impression there’s something else to be done. A little confusing. And it gets even more confusing because there are…

4. CHEEVOS THAT DON’T APPEAR UNTIL SOME CONDITION IS FULFILLED

Like ‘Clearing house’ in Buried Insights, which doesn’t become available until after Taimi switches on the power. I worked through that mission with baited breath, wondering if I’d done something to disqualify myself early on.
If you’re going to hide cheevos like this, why not show them in gray or overlay a little lock or something to indicate that they’re waiting to be unlocked?

5. CHEEVOS THAT DON’T REGISTER

I mentioned in (1) that I wasn’t sure if a cheevo was registring my killing of the chak – this is a real concern because, as in the example of “Clearing house” from Buried Insights, the task you’re doing may register some actions but not others, even though they look the same. In Clearing House, you’re supposed to destroy 23 defenses. Four of those are turrets that are underwater. I destroyed 23 turrets and golems that I found on land, and discovered that four of them didn’t register as kills. It was only when I found the four underwater ones that the cheevo completed. However, the turrets that didn’t register didn’t look any different from other turrets that did register. It took a guide from Dulfy (again) to find what I was missing. It detracts from the fun and challenge of exploration when you’re doing what you appear to be asked but the results are inconsistent.

6. CHEEVOS THAT MOCK THE STORY

So the PACT commander and his battle-hardened team fight their way across SW, VB and AB and arrive at a chak pit in TD at the end of Roots of Terror. Seeing the pit filled with over 50 chak, the commander turns to his team and says: “Well, we’re not getting through there guys.” Like, we’re an awesome team and all but this is too much for us. We need to go another way.

He then proceeds to jump into the pit and wipes out 50 chak single-handed to get the cheevo.

I had a good laugh after I recovered from the almighty face-palm I gave myself. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad the Chak Killer cheevos were there – I enjoyed them. In fact, when we arrived at the pit I was all ready to jump in and get to work, and it was disappointing to see my toon talk about turning tail. Maybe this was an opportune moment for a branch in the story line or at least the illusion of one with some kind of story choices. At the very least, the scenario could have been handled better without requiring a complete 180 from the commander that makes him seem either cowardly (if you don’t do the cheevos) or a leader who doesn’t trust his team (if you do the cheevos). I don’t know. It was just a funny moment. I enjoyed the silliness.

As I said, these aren’t show stoppers. I’ve enjoyed the HOT story achievements more than the central ones I remember doing ages ago. That’s a good sign and I’m hopeful the next expansion will have even better achievements to complete. Now I’m diving back into the jungle to continue those cheevos!

Has ANet Forgotten the Casual Gamers?

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Stop trying to make Casuals out to be something they are not.

That’s good advice and, no offense, but you really should be the first to take it. I’ve been following your posts and you’ve done nothing but define casuals and casual play by your own terms in a calculated way to bolster your own subjective argument. You’ve invented a ‘casual group’ and made yourself spokesman for it. You’re voicing your own opinion (as we all are) and there’s nothing wrong with that – except that you’re acting like it’s fact and like you speak for all us ‘casuals’. And worse, you’re making us out to be victims, unable to cope with change and unable to adapt. It’s insulting and untrue.

I’m a casual. I play two nights a week if I can, I don’t min-max and I still can’t see tells. My technique is mashing buttons and I have all the usual familiar responsbilities and time constraints that all us ‘casuals’ seem to have. (I don’t have a dog. Does that make me hard-core?) And I enjoy HOT. Let’s get that clear. I ENJOY HOT and don’t find it a struggle or grind.

Casuals can play HOT. Casuals can enjoy HOT. There is nothing physical stopping this, no matter what you say. The game already had plenty for casuals to do and HOT just gave us more. You can, and undoubtably will, argue that just because everything isn’t available to casuals then nothing is for casuals. Feel free to argue that, if you think it’s rational. Feel free to redefine me as not casual, by your subjective definition. But for your own self-respect and that of the people you feel you’re representing, please stop representing us. You’re doing a lousy job.

A fellow completionist waves hello! Those empty wardrobe spaces are just calling out to me to be filled.

Honest question since I don’t know how long you have been playing. But if you missed out on any events in the past that gave out exclusive account bound skins (or hell something like you missed this past BL skin sale where they were all account bound upon buying) do those empty spaces in your wardrobe bother you? Do you just ignore them when trying to go for wardrobe completion since there is no way for you to get them anymore?

I’ve only been playing just over a year and it doesn’t bother me. I think it becomes obvious from life eventually that many things just aren’t completable or attainable, so you got to take your enjoyment from the collecting itself. Every mini collected, ever dye, every skin is like a little christmas. In fact, finishing something can actually be a bit of a downer. I spent a year finishing exotic hunter and now it’s like.. oh, it’s over already?
Maybe completionist is a bit of a misnomer. More like.. completionaspirist?
And whatever you call it, the key is patience. You never know when something that’s out of reach might just slip into reach, even briefly.

Imho, this particular side-debate is pointless. As you admit above, the poster you’re debating with is only focusing on a particular scope. You’re taking a superset of that scope and claiming a win because they don’t address everything in your scope. It’s apples and oranges. Without a common scope, the debate is like arguing whether poodles or porches make the best candied apples for use as lawn-bowls.

Why is everything so unfriendly to melee?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Wish I knew. I also think it’s ridiculous to force players to go ranged just to properly deal with the new mobs. Sure, every class does have a ranged option, but that doesn’t mean every player wants to use it exclusively.

This has ticked my friend off to no end. There’s a number of critters, and bosses especially, that have [can’t melee me] zones. The wyverns have a bad habit of doing this, and the floor damage is excessive to where melee can’t even consider going in.

I realize that melee is higher-risk/higher-reward, and that’s fine, but HoT is especially guilty of skewing the risk/reward for melee completely out of value.

But the big wyverns like Matriarch are actually safer in melee. I stand under them with my mess and poke it in the belly. They don’t drop fire under themselves and with patriarch, it gives you more room to save yourself when he stars blowing you off the platform.

And the arrow frogs are easier in melee than ranged. They’re frozen on the spot when they fire. You just dodge behind them and they’re at your mercy.

But why stick with just melee anyway? I always have a melee and ranged option on my mes. Each has its place. You switch as needs change.

That I cannot answer. But I suspect that it has something to do with giving players the chance to run away from combat they don’t want to engage in if they want to. If mobs could run at the same speed as you it would just be incredibly annoying to run from combat considering how far some mobs will chase you before losing interest.

That kind of contradicts what you said earlier..

I think it has more to do with not allowing you to just endlessly dodge mob attacks in PvE by simply running away from them.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter either way. It’s the way it is and probably will remain so.

Could we make crafting be instant?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Well, ever since GW2 release, there was lot of updates. Changes for traits, transmute charges, skills. Changes for PvP WvW and lot of other things. But nothing for Crafting Stations at all. My suggestion is not to make them instant, but to add a Queue system to it.

For ex. While my 150 elder wood logs to 50 elder wood planks in progress, i can’t start another refine unless current ‘150logs into 150planks’ is finishes\canceled. But with queue system you can place another refine in queue, so it can start immediately when current one is finished.

I am trying to do a daily ascended material farm ( it is after all about 16-18 gold per day ) and i need to wait and place every refine one by one. I could have placed them all in queue order and go make food or samething

Queue system won’t make crafts fast, but it will save some time if you have lot of them to do one by one. And of course things like pre-made queue lists will be good too. Click one button and wait.

Seconded. That’s the concept I was trying to convey further above, but you said it much better.

I thought you were going to say they should have some kind of traversal system in play like focus running in 9Dragons or gliding in Blade and Soul….those were fun. I’ll settle with removing combat slowdown though….why is it even necessary in the first place? It’s not like cast times or cooldowns are slowed to give players more opportunities to d……

It’s because of pvp isn’kitten

I was thinking in pve, but if people were running around at the speed of out of combat swiftness then getting your strikes and aoes to land might be challenging. Well if pvp is the reason then leave it to pvp and remove combat slow from pve then. Everybody wins.

I think it has more to do with not allowing you to just endlessly dodge mob attacks in PvE by simply running away from them. If your speed wasn’t slowed down while in combat most if not all mob attacks wouldn’t be able to catch up and actually hit you. This forces you to actually enter combat or do something to get out of it

…which leads enquiring minds to ponder: why not do away with the slow-down and make the mobs run proportionally faster?

And, on a brighter note, it would also allow people to know who to thank when these things are dropped responsibly at events.

Want more players?

Even after reading all this, I still don’t know what the point was. I got confused by the history lesson with the mile-wide generalisations of people and the presumption that the most ‘worthwhile’ rewards are in pvp/wvw, which somehow leads to the game needing more wealthy players who will presumably spend more in the gem store and generation 1950/1960 are those players? My head is spinning.

Why are you trying to avoid combat anyway? You’re meant to be a hero! Heroes don’t run from a fight!

Real heroes know when to avoid a fight for the betterment of all.

Could we make crafting be instant?

I wish we could select several items to craft (maybe by toggling a tick or a flag next to them) then click a button and have it craft them all in sequence.

You’ve presented two different issues in your title and opening post, making things a bit confusing and misleading. I agree with your title – an in-game npc who cuts your hair would be interesting. How much that npc would cost is another debate altogether, but some cost should probably be involved.

HoT maps?

At the very least, the title should be changed to better describe what the post is about. “Hot maps?” is insufficient. Suggest something like “Seeking opinions of HOT event chains” or “I think HOT maps are boring” which isn’t a good start to a thread but at least more informative. Frankly, I think this kind of opinion-validating thread is pointless in itself, but at the very least if it was titled correctly those who are interested can read it, and those who aren’t will know to avoid it.

[Idea] Post-Raid Explorable Zones

I like this idea. I hate that I can’t even peek inside the zone without being in a raid group. I just want to see the place!

Indeed. There’s no reason not to let a one-man party in. It’s not like he’s going to beat VG. Dungeons and Fractals can be entered solo.

Great sword skill 4 - could it use locking?

I have a little peeve with a particular skill on the great sword. It’s #4, which summons an illusion on a target – but it requires you to be looking directly at the target in action cam. This is frustrating in the middle of a battle, and especially so because there’s another skill that does a similar thing (#2) but only needs you to be locked on to a target. Skill 4’s requirement to be looking at the target – even if you’ve got them selected – seems an unnecessary bit of bureaucracy. Would there be any harm if this just worked on the selected target? It could even work on locking first, then on whatever you happen to be looking at if you don’t have a selected target. Best of both worlds.

How about staff>spear transmutation?

I like this idea. I’m already imagining a norn that looks like Poseidon, holding a staff that looks like a trident. Just the other day, I was looking through weapons on the TP and saw some skins that I thought were for staff and looked fantastic, then I realised they were spears only. It would be great to have this option.

You can click on the poster to target it and get the Interact option even if the game things you’re facing an NPC or they’re closer.

Thank you so much. I feel stupid for not trying that.
