This is because the Thief is the spiritual successor of the Assassin in GW1, so they can’t use all the same skill names they had in GW1. I think this is the one reason why they chose Invigorating Precision to preserve the difference in the games.

Other than that, the functionality is pretty much the same.

But yes, if something is too popular, the heck with the numeric evidence to the contrary, nerf it.

This is true, when ArenaNet first came with the 8 classes they wanted to get rid of the holy trinity DPS, Healing and Tank.

Rather than get several classes fulfill each role they somehow created one superior class above all other classes.

The Warrior currently is so superior in the majority of aspects in the game that it overshadows other classes, which is even worse than having a trinity in the game. Rather than have a mix of professions be good at what they do they have one class to rule them all.

Popularity also indicates effectiveness, if a class is not effective at something less people are interested in playing it. The more effective the more popular hence often the term ‘’Flavor of the month’’ which means that during a certain time period a specific class/build is played because its so effective.

Im very curious to see what ArenaNet is going to do about this issue, if you want my opinion I have very little hope for other classes and I dont think ArenaNet is going to realize it anytime soon.

I believe that Warriors have too much access to stability, negating many crowd control effects on other classes. It’s also the reason why warrior trains are so popular in WvW and it’s kind of ridiculous.

I think that overall for the Warrior it’s a little overdone and takes away the challenge of really timing your stability right.

So I need to ask other Thieves this question, what is left of your Thief?

  • What do you do in a dungeon and what build do you use?
  • What role do you fulfill in WvW in both roaming party’s and Zerg vs Zerg?
  • Do you feel your class, the Thief is just as effective as other classes?
  • Did you swap weaponsets? If so from what previous set to which current set?
  • Do you feel underpowered, balanced or overpowered compared to other classes?
  • What stats combination on your gear do you think is the most effective now?

I just want a general feel for what the opinion of others is about our class these days, if you are wondering about mine. I feel less useful than other classes in a party, with the exception of stealth taxi people through hard PvE parts such as in dungeons.

Was having a blast dueling with YB. I think it was Dyak? dolyak attack? Something like that. I am the SBI norn engi. Tried inviting you to a party but wouldn’t let me. Appreciate you backing off when other people joined in on the fight.

Good fights, got interrupted several times but that’s to be expected in WvW

I saw you two duking it out, I legit thought my fellow Yak was under attack and didn’t know you guys where dueling together.

My fellow Yak whispered me what you guys where doing so I backed off (I’m the D/D Ele with the two Incinerators).

I’ve been giving it some thought and usually posts like these contain ideas that are so overpowered it’s ridiculous.

Here’s my suggestion for a fun and balanced change and i’ll start off with traps.

Needle Trap: retain the line area, instead of a single use make it act like line of warding. Whenever someone walks over the line he is immobilized. When the trap is first triggered it lasts for 3 seconds triggering immobilize every time an enemy walks over it.

This makes it act like a line of warding except its a condition rather than a knockback (or in that fashion)

Tripwire would act the same way but i’d balance it to a maximum of 2-3 knockdowns everytime an enemy moves over it (If you stand still after the first knockdown then nothing happens similar to slick shoes).

Shadow Trap: keep cast time, increase regeneration duration if destroyed early. If triggered by enemy (shadow pursuit) then it stays active for 12 seconds with a cooldown of 4 seconds. This allows the Thief to use Shadow pursuit multiple times effectively ’’haunting’’ its target for 12 seconds. (reduce might gained though).

This opens up Thief area denial.

Venoms:

All venoms should have a duration rather than a charge, and have a % to trigger on hit rather than critical. With a balanced internal cooldown to prevent stacking.

Example: Spider Venom lasts 20 seconds recharge 45 seconds. 20% chance on hit to trigger.

Now Scorpion Wire: faster projectile more reliable, steals 1 boon and shares with allies around you.

Now Stealth and Skills.

Stealth attacks for #2 #3 #4 #5 too!

We shouldnt just #1 whenever we are in stealth, we could use some variety in our skills without adding every weapon to our kitten nal in the game.

Example: Thief is stealthed #1 turns into Backstab, #2 turns into Disrupting Stab: quick dazing stab if below 50% hp and vulnerability above 50%.

By adding additional stealth attacks, Thieves now truly have to respond to the situation with the proper stealth attack. Your offensive Backstab might have to be delayed by a well placed interrupt for example. You will have to decide now if you want damage or something else entirely depending on the fight.

Even the most hardcore of thieves ie. Jumper will play a different class (likely warrior, most thieves are rerolling/have already rerolled a warrior) after Dec.10 path in tPvP.

Not to rag on anyone personally but if one is ‘’hardcore of thieves’’ and moves to a different class after a balance patch then that person is not ‘’hardcore of said class’’.

I agree with all the changes and want to respond to you in a constructive manner.

I want to stress this that as of right now we have a couple of utility skills that are so inferior in comparison to other skills (not just our own but in comparison to all utilities of all classes).

These bring nothing to the table unless heavily heavily traited into them and even then are still inferior to other utilities.

-Venoms need to work for a duration, not charges.
-Traps, useless in the way they work (lines) + their effect pales to Ranger traps (Also a cast time on a stunbreak? Really?).

We have no 1200 range, I can’t tell you how disheartening it is that I cannot range something properly it’s really breaking my heart.

- Pistols should be 1200 by default, making them the long range single target weapon set (Traited semi-AoE) and let shortbow be close range AoE.

- Daggers need to cleave somehow (New Trait: Flashing Blades 75% to hit up to 3-4 targets with your dagger attacks).

We also have no defense outside of stealth, please please we need protection and or stability so badly!

I would really appreciate it if you would look into these things, because the state of the Thief as of right now is that we have nothing to bring to the table that other classes can’t do better (Projectile blocking, Reflect, Portals, group wide stat boosts.)

Burning death animation

I’ve always wondered, even a burning on auto attacks and whatnot but enemies always show the electrocuted animation when they die.

Why not the burning? As a class so heavily focused on burning and whatnot you’d figure that enemies die of burning right?

It’s funny because 1 Thief is now a requirement for optimal speedrunning.

In the whole scheme of things, Thieves get kicked because PUG thieves are notoriously bad.

In Guild Wars 1 the Assassin profession had little defense and thus suffered the exact same reputation, before seeing major updates and today (and for the last years) Assassins are required in speedrunning, farming, tanking whatever suits your elite needs.

In the case of CoF, it’s all about how good of a Thief you are. I’m not gonna lie it’s hard to get into the 4x War 1x Mes group but if you do get in one and show your best people start asking you to come in their group.

For instance last week I had a group lf a 4th warrior I just pinged myself into that group and now that people got to know me they actually want to roll 3x Wars 1x Mes 1x Thief because they prefer it like that because I left a good reputation. I never went down and never made any mistakes, if anything I corrected the Warriors mistakes.

It’s all about how you represent yourself, a Thief rocking Arah armor for instance shows an experienced and skillful image whereas Duelist or crafted set does not.

Make sure you do alot of damage, make you dodge everything you need to dodge. Make sure you make the 4th Warrior obsolete. Make sure you have a good looking businesscard when playing a Thief, so shell out some gold or hours to get a more ‘’elite looking’’ armor set.

Same goes for Arah runs, some peaple just hate thiefs becouse they mostly get 1 shotted on Arah they met some that cannot play their class and thats how they build their opinion about thiefs.

This is not true, any experienced group will want to have atleast 1 Thief for skipping stuff. Shadow Refuge alone makes Thieves highly desirable, and Thieves are one of the best professions for fighting against Giganticus Lupicus.

Thief shadowsteps now work worse than mesmer, guardian and ele teleports. Overfixed bug from a not played by anyone tPvP map.

To be honest, I don’t think anyone at ArenaNet plays the Thief. Or atleast enough to balance it properly.

“Stealth skills” should be “stealth attacks”
The title confused me that you were pleading for more ways to stealth (which already makes everyone cry, and I personally wouldn’t like either)
But stealth attacks on every attack is something I rly am looking forward to since beta already.

It’ll need some tweaking though ’cause if none of them costs any initiatives, I can see shadow prison being spammed a lot. Also disrupting stab would overrule sword stealth attack #1 unless ofc the skills #2-5 on s/d or s/p are worth taking over backstab.

Don’t see this being implemented any time soon though, it’ll take a lot of tweaking and so.

Thankyou for the feedback, I cannot change the title anymore but it is indeed Stealth Attacks.

All weapons and combinations would have new ‘’Stealth Attacks’’ and the star Daze from sword should overrule the #2 Dagger stealth attack.

You could try to spam Shadow Prison but you would need to gain access to stealth to do that (Either CnD or blow HiS/BP/SR) The dome would also be fairly small and ofcourse causes revealed.

Anyway it’s just a wild thought, and glad to hear that someone else has also been wanting more stealth attacks since release.

I wonder everyday why we only get one stealth attacks, as stealth is a tool for many purposes when it comes to strategy there is only one option you will face.

To press “1” to reveal or to not reveal.

My suggestion would be adding a stealth skill for every weapon skill, this would also elimate the need for another weapon (which Thieves have been wanting since day 1).

This would also open up new play and new opportunity’s for supportive weapon skills rather than selfish damage skills.

Example of new stealth skills for D/D would be:

  1. Backstab
  2. Distrupting Stab – Daze and Blind foe (low damage)
  3. Shadow Prison (Dual weapon stealth skill) – Create a dome for 3 seconds that absorbs projectiles and heals allies within the dome for each projectile absorbed. (minimal healing but can be useful when facing heavy projectile area’s or hardcap the amount of projectiles absorbed).
  4. Entangling Asp – Throw three daggers in a line curing a condition from allies and stealing 1 boon from each enemy hit. (can pointblank use to steal 3 boons from 1 enemy but wouldnt support your teammates with this)
  5. Beguiling Haze – Pull yourself and your foe to eachother (no damage causes 3x stack vuln for 7 seconds)

These are the stealth skills for the dagger in order and all cause Revealed once you activate them or hit a target, and for the lack of original skill names I took the ones from GW1 Assassin skillset.

  1. Auto attack
  2. Heart seeker
  3. Death Blossom
  4. Dancing Dagger
  5. Cloak and Dagger

This would also elimate the chain stealthing caused by Cloak and Dagger as you cannot precast it in stealth anymore. The Thief would have to wait for Stealth to wear off before he can CnD again, also elimating perma stealth by D/P and SB + Smokescreen.

I play a Thief since day one, it’s the only profession I play and I’ve played alot of both PvE and sPvP. I think these would be a great change to the Thief class for both players who enjoy the Thief but want a little more diversity and support out of their class and players who team up or fight against Thieves.

Let me know what you think, it was a wild thought while farming CoF the other day and I think it would work well certainly because of our stale F1 mechanic that needs traiting for it’s uses.

Should drop a minimum of green quality item with an increased chance of rare and exotic or fair amount of crafting material depending on the area level.

Graphic effects:

Lightning looks and sounds depressing, more skyrim like lightning! Kabooom! instead of ttssshshhshsh.

Salvage/recycling Ascended items:

I want to be able to salvage the stuff I don’t need! y u no implemented dis?

Set items:

Add a drop % for item sets unique to your profession with a unique appearance and soulbound on acquire (drops from temple bosses).

Sigils:

Sigils that also work good for other professions that do not have attunement swap or Engineer kits! They work so well for them!

(i.e. Sigil of Energy trigger on stealth cd XX seconds)

Story quests:

Our personal story line stopped at Zhaitan, why? I very much enjoyed the personal story quests and want to play more of them!

Thief:

Pistol Whip 10-15% damage increase.
Pistol piercing shots grandmaster trait.
Removal and replacement of trap utilities and traits. (ambush is pretty neat though)

Here since I can remember, party members cannot enter the dungeon when the prompt is clicked.

Previous party members still displayed in window while they are not in the party.

These are all serious bugs that have been here for months, it’s very very annoying and it’s been straight rat poisen for my gameplay experience.

I’ve played an Engineer in the open beta’s, and did so with great success. However my old builds no longer work due to skill changes.

So I played a Thief mainly since the headstart, and created an Engineer back then knowing I would play one once more.

The time has come now that i’ve dusted off the tool belt and i’ve been picking it up again, however im in desperate need of solid sPvP builds. I feel myself being steamrolled over by cookiecutter builds regardless of profession. With exception of the glass cannon Thief which LOL Magnet Pry Bar, watch it melt.

Could you guys help a fellow excentric out and suggest some builds? Condi or straight power?

I played a Bomb Kit/Flamethrower/Slick shoes build back in beta days.

D/P definatly works as intended.

The Shadowshot reflects, essentially it will count as the person who reflects it casts Shadowshot making him shadowstep to the target and in this case towards you.

I just noticed that sometimes when I use Thieves Guild my character says: So nice of you to join me!

I’ve noticed a few other lines aswell but I didn’t pay much attention to it at the time.
I don’t remember Thieves Guild activating that dialogue and i’m assuming it’s put in the game with the last update.

I don’t think there is a rotation at all when playing Elementalist, you just roll with whatever your party needs at that moment.

But for burst always Burning Speed→ Ring of Fire → Fire Grab

I don’t understand the ‘’terrible concept’’, in Guild Wars 1 we had enchantments and some professions where able to strip those enchantments or cause more damage if your foe was under the effect of enchantments.

Seems like they are implementing the same concept in GW2, which is good imo.

The Dervish profession is within reach if the Elementalist would have been given the Scythe weapon in a future expansion or update.

Just think about it, the Elementalist with four attunements. Two of those are Air and Earth which the Dervish also used in the original Guild Wars.

Just imagine the level of awesomeness if those Scythe animations where implemented in Guild Wars 2 and given to the Elementalist. Scythe would focus on cone attacks, slow but devastating.

This also happened to me twice after patch, I was able to click ‘’Enter exp mode’’ but nothing happened.

I solved it by guesting to the server which the person was in who entered first. It will allow you to enter then.

Re-mapping, re-logging does not work.

Conjuring weapons while wielding Scepter/Focus or Scepter/Dagger sometimes doesn’t give you the conjured weapon.

It does create a Conjured Weapon on the floor for your allies to pick up though.

I agree with this, the water/earth/arcana trait lines are so good that it overshadows Fire and somewhat the Air one.
