I play alot of sPvP casually, i’m rank 32 atm with 37k available glory. I’d like to see some way to convert my PvP stuff into some PvE shiz. Because i’m really falling behind and have little to no gold to pay for exotics, hell im even struggling to get the right stats on my armor.

Btw the gems you win from paid tournament is hard to achieve at this moment, I play on US server but im from the EU. People aren’t online when I am and if I swap servers I stop receiving rewards due to a bug.

I know some of you are upset with the change, but really, this is something we were planning for a while. WE MAY NOT LOCK DOWN utilities down the road, so that you can still have some adjustment when out of combat, but at the same time, we do not think weapon swapping mid-match is good for the overall health of the game. Just wanted to remind you we are here, and I am watching the forums, and your ideas are being heard.

Keep it constructive (and really, overall you guys are doing a FANTASTIC JOB OF THIS!), and carry on!

Assume A>B>C>A

If I run A and they run B, we wipe them, they could come back with C. Who’s to say we don’t swap to B? To finish your analogy, they see you swap to scissors and go rock.

You look at is as only one side can change things. Both sides can. It was the benefit of building traits that could be interchanged at a moments notice and change up your play style.

Limiting options is never a good idea. Ever. There are far too many key buffs required and too few of weapon sets to provide them. Not to mention completely useless weapon sets. All that’s been done is forced people into key weapon sets/utilities, and anything that isn’t perfect is tossed aside.

If this was a good change. If “less is more”, then remove weapon swapping all together. You can only play with one set. Can only be a GS warrior. A staff mesmer. A shortbow thief.

Sad to check in on GW2, still see no infrastructure, balance changes for whatever reason, and now no trait/weapon swapping.

I thought it was pretty good logic, ofcourse it works both ways i’m just making a point and you’re quoting it just to make a post.

When you represent a team in higher end PvP, you should be limited to change WHILE IN A MATCH.

Different weapon sets provide different kind of playstyles, that’s why you should think of what you pick beforehand and make a strategy using those weapons.
To me this entire thread comes off as ‘’I can’t change my stats anymore during a match so I can get the upperhand rather than tactically think on a counter’’

Warriors are fine, you just cannot stray away from the Greatsword – Axe/Axe and that’s what’s killing you.

Try something creative and go Mace for a while, miracles will happen before your eyes.

We’re not even discussing about weapons here. We’re discussing about traits and utilities if you haven’t read the thread yet posting unaware.

I thought we where, because OP says Thieves burst eclipses the Warriors and complains about it.

I’m for buffing defense of Warrior, but only if damage and mobility is nerfed.
Asking for more buffs is ridiculous.

That isn’t the Warrior who is UP, it is the thief who is still OP.
Just look at what the thief is supposed to be:

Thieves are the masters of mobility, stealth and high single target damage. They can be very fragile if you counter their stealth with area of effects or large stacks of conditions, but they trade this fragility in order to have some of the highest burst damage in the game. They are able to help allies through traps, venoms and the mobility to flank most encounters.

Fragile? Stealth, this and this
Vulnerable to conditions? this and this

So, they trade nothing to have the highest burst damage in the game. Balanced, uh?

Yes because a huge AoE cone of 2h kitten is totally justified, it’s kids like you that get my profession nerfed because YOU can’t counter them.

Every patch has been a nerf for Thieves and every patch has been a buff to Warriors, saying you are UP in comparison to Thieves means YOU are unable to play your class correctly.

There is only one dagger skin that I keep going back to, and is 100% free.
Centurion Claw is the Hall of Monuments skin and can be created as many times as you like!

The skin is pretty big and feels so good when using Death Blossom with 2x Claw! Best skin in the game IMO!

I sometimes play my D/D Elementalist in sPvP and just enjoy the hell out of it because I can be very flexible and very tanky. I sometimes just miss that on my Thief, I would really like to be able to play a mobile tanky Thief thats hard to down without the excessive use of stealth to avoid damage.

If the day should ever come that we could play a tanky Thief similar to what an Elementalist or Engineer bunker could do i’d be a very very happy player!

I’m rank 30 Thief in sPvP and I am 100% sure they are using steal on you to teleport to you.

I use this at the last split second when im finishing Thieves to teleport stomp them, because I know decent Thieves wait for that moment to shadowstep away from me. Steal teleport stomping requires some quick reflexes though.

Again I am 100% sure they are ’’Steal’’ teleport stomping you.

^Maybe, but if ArenaNet doesn’t realize that there are structural problems with the class that everyone is complaining about aside from top single target damage then I have no hope for future balancing regardless of profession.

Like I said in my screenshot, it doesn’t matter what they hand us in patches we will find ways to make people complain. It’s the innate creativity of every dedicated Thief player that cannot be nerfed, so we will always be OP in a sense.

Initiative on it’s own is both a blessing and a curse, because Initiative is the resource and the skill is the result in PvE it’s mostly pressing the best skill on the bar and repeat that (Pistol Whip) it doesn’t involve any tactical decisions and therefor is boring and bland.

STEAL
Now this is something I have wanted to discuss for a while due to the recent nerfs. Why is Steal even our class special ability? Environmental weapons are a gamble in PvE which it never should be. In PvP I can use each stolen item to work for me in my adventage but still I feel it should be different.

Initiative: I think, like anything, ya get what ya put into it. If ya just spam the same skill all the time, then sure it’s boring … but if ya use it the way it was meant to be used – to stay mobile and switch attacks quickly, then it’s a heck of allot of fun. I don’t think ya can blame Initiative for people being lazy.

Steal: I use steal for a gap closer, for a buff, for a quick damage/poison, and on top of all that, for the nifty stuff it gives me. There isn’t a fight I don’t use steal … it was a game changer for me; but I know it’s got a lurve-hate relationship with players. The Thief wouldn’t be the same without Steal, and yeah ya could make it a Utility Skill, but then you wouldn’t get the benefits of traiting into it – which are totally worth it.

I’m so glad you said this regarding Steal, it’s exactly the point with steal, traits make it incredibly useful but it doesn’t affect the environmental weapons themself which what the main concept of steal is. Everything else is a secondary effect (Gap closer)

If you take plain steal without traiting what do you end up with? A gap closer with an environmental weapon generation on a cooldown.

This is exactly the point what im trying to make with converting steal to a utility and implement a new special class ability because steal itself only becomes very nifty when traited for it, other classes have a strong concept on what their respective class does. i.e. Guardian virtues you know what it does and you activate them for their respective plain secondary effect, you can trait them to become better. but our traits do not affect the primary steal effect (generating an environmental weapon) instead they add secondary effects without enhancing the primary. Therefor my strong suggestion to make it a utility.

Plus it would nerf the ridiculous Backstab build, I play it from time to time but I just feel silly :P

Was a decent post until you said stealth isn’t a survivability tool.

Actually I had a post twice the size, had to cut it down in half due to size limitation, I was going to continue on the stealth but had to cut something somewhere including my discussion about WvW and traits, stealth is a survival tool but not by definition otherwise they would have given us stealth skills that grant us protection or something. I and so does everyone else use it to survive, I know you are like wtf what is this guy saying but stealth was designed with stealth skills to attack, not with stealth skills to survive. So I had to tag it has not a survival tool by definition.

I do agree with you and everyone here that you use it to survive though Sorry for the confusion!

PvP: In sPvP Thieves are great, this is where initiative and choice of skill shines. This is because here mistakes are punished especially in higher end PvP. I have Rank 30 and Champion Title so I think I have some credit in saying stuff regarding sPvP. Even here Backstab does alot of damage and it can frustrate people that are killed by it, but the truth is that you designed us like this. You gave us abilities and we figured out how to quickly kill something which is as intended because we lack damage soaking abilities.

Yes we can run away with great easy, I can pretty much escape any fight when i’m on the losing end but thats how it was designed right? People like to link that running away =/= survivability but it’s not, survivability is surviving a fight by staying in it and negating incoming attacks or keeping yourself up during attacks. Stealth is not a survivability tool by definition, it’s an attack tool by design because of the special stealth skill.

Weapon sets: Weapons are currently very bland or bugged and just all over the place, what does Pistol/Pistol actually do? Is it tanking? Is it bleeding? Is it unload heavy damage?

Sword/Dagger was nerfed for what purpose? Too long of a daze duration on a Moa in PvE? Or repeated long daze in PvP?

D/D follows the same example as P/P, why is it’s dual skill condition based if it’s sneak attack is power based?

Overall I feel Thieves deserve one or two extra weapons, a Rifle would be very suited and is wildy accepted by the Thief community. People have also been screaming for an offhand sword which fits the bill too, and opens up for AoE (whirlwind kind of attacks that will work very well in PvE)

With initiative it goes like this: chain – payoff.
Initiative is the resource but it doesn’t motivate strategic gameplay, in PvE and some abilities in PvP such as heartseeker can be spammed for direct effect and pay off it is not ‘’building up’’ to your big move that is going to be the decisive outcome of the fight.

Utilities: Venoms are incredibly useless on their own except for Basilisk, they have little use in solo and teamplay while a Necro can just use their marks for the same effect but AoE with no cost of utilities.

Blinding Powder could be changed to leave a smoke field for a few seconds, Thieves would start using this ALOT. Rest of the utilities are fine in my book and I use them all frequently with the exception of venoms and traps.

9 out of 10 times I use steal for a gap closer, mug damage or initiative regain, not to use a specific Environmental weapon which was it’s design. Also the enemy I used steal on doesn’t suffer a penalty which is stupid, I just ’’stole’’ his weapon he should be affected by something of a debuff.
Steal should therefor be a utility skill and not a class special ability.

Recent nerfs: Every nerf so far has been from a PvP standpoint, PvE Thieves suffer because of this and there is no excuse for that. I and i’m sure many other Thieves feel more of a burden to a team rather than a helping hand, because usually Thieves are the first to fall on their kitten in PvE due to many mobs and AoE. This is a direct result of less damage output due to PvP based balancing decisions (such as the Pistol Whip one) but also due to the fundamental design that Thieves kill before they are killed, a philosophy that doesn’t work in PvE with veterans and champions because they cannot be killed as quick as we are designed to do.

ArenaNet stated that they would look into the Backstab damage and probably lower it but to compensate for that they would balance other skills to make up for lower damage but you didn’t instead you took a kick to the testicles in other weapon sets.

We excel at escaping, we excel at going in and out, we are a very fun class when it all works together. We can be that one tool to turn the tide but it’s hard to find a person that understand the Thief like that.

I’m not here to flame but you can counter it if you know how, I suggest rolling a Thief and trying out that 30/30/0/0/10 Spec and see what the weaknesses are.

I’m okay with nerfing the Backstab damage nowadays but in return i’d like some other stuff changed and buffed in our arsenal, that’s the least they can do.

^Indeed, yesterday I encountered a high ranked Thief (I think about rank 50 or so) she was using the D/P set and I just couldn’t kill her. She was so good jumping from one target to the next, it took a while but in the end 3 of us where sitting on the floor in downed state, I was pretty amazed.

Thieves are a boring class

I love my Thief too, there are times that I just look at it with disqust because of the constant nerf with every patch but it’s also good for my creativity to come up with something new after.

I’ve also played WoW and mained a Rogue strictly in PvP, I usually don’t play PvE this is also the case in GW2.

I found the WoW Rogue to be vastly different from the GW2 Thief, the Rogue is ’’planning’’ based and Thief is more reflex based. Two entirely different classes although the archetype is the same.

I enjoy my bleed Thief alot atm, i’ve also started using the Shortbow to bring down enemies to <50% and then switch to D/D for a Backstab.

In both games and with both classes i’ve had great experiences, altough in the Rogue case some more ’’epic’’ moments when killing a flag carrier on the last second, but mind that GW2 just launched and will probably launch such modes in the future. Things might pick up for you then.

Played my Thief since 25th of August. My first and only level 80 char with R30 in sPvP.

The conversion recipes are as follows:
25 Arcane Orbs + 1 Arcane Converter + 1 Arcane Crystal + 25 Arcane Powder = 11 Arcane Crystals
25 Arcane Crystals + 1 Arcane Converter + 1 Arcane Sliver + 25 Arcane Powder = 11 Arcane Slivers
25 Arcane Slivers + 1 Arcane Converter + 1 Arcane Orb + 25 Arcane Powder = 11 Arcane Orbs


I put in powder, arcane converter, arcane orbs and arcane sliver, but it says it requires 25 slivers in order to work.

Backstab itself wasn’t nerfed, Cloak and Dagger which is part of the chain is nerfed however.

Note warriors have yet to receive a single nerf, and in fact got buffs.

Warrior profession is ArenaNet’s love child and it has been like that since GW1, it doesn’t matter what they do or how powerful they are they will keep adding more buffs to the profession that is already over the line.

I read the screenshots you posted here and unless there’s more you didn’t include I think you’ve created a thread that’s based on some assumptions. One, everyone knows stealth isn’t working as intended due to the culling issue. So I’m not going to say that they are going to ‘rework’ the stealth mechanic rather than fixing it to actually work properly. As far as backstab getting the nerf hammer, that may happen but I don’t see that he says anything about their damage output. That said, I fully expect the thief class to be changed. Like I said, it happens in all MMO’s post launch that tweaks are going to happen. The question is, what will the babies cry about after that? My guess, mesmer tears incoming.

I asked the question if they lowered the damage on Backstab, his answer his: among other things. So in addition to other things Backstab is one of the abilities that will see a reduction in damage.

I have more screenshots but they are about other things and therefor do not belong in the Thief subforum.

He also said that if you play more than just the Backstab build, you’d be fine with the changes.

Thieves receiving the nerf bat in upcoming patch, expect a lower damage in backstab builds.
Also Stealth is to be targeted next, because apperently it isn’t working as intended at the moment.

I would like to add that this nerf is amongst other nerfs for other professions, so before we all rage this might actually be a good things since now we are all brought down to the same level.

I’d also like to thank Taru Taru for the nice conversation we had, I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye because he left without notice.

I don’t think of the engineer as a ritualist. The look, the skills, the feeling, it’s absolutley not the same even if spirits behave the same way as turrets…even if their roles may match sometimes, it’s not same.

I agree with this a 100%, people link the Engineer to the Ritualist because it has turrets that are stationary ’’minions’’ that do damage. Some spirits, not all of them where like that in GW1 other than that the Engineer and Ritualist have nothing in common. Ritualists do not use weapon kits, yes they did use bundles but they gave you a passive effect and an active active when you drop them.

Ritualist is 100% unique and no other profession has any remote link to any of the Ritualists abilities (No not even Guardians, Spirit weapons in GW1 where an unstrippable effect that would enhance your weapon or give a passive effect for a while. The Guardians ‘’spirit weapons’’ are summonable minions, like clones or Elementals.

Thanks for opening this thread, mine got locked in the general discussion.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed aswell for the Ritualist, it’s so very different then other professions! I really miss the rit from GW1 and i’m kinda pissed that they gave spirit weapons to Guardians.

The fact that you also put the Ritualist down here as a prof without weapon swap pleases me, because I had the same idea! Btw the weapons are the same as those of the Elementalist, not bad but i’d like to see some variety for scholars. Mace + Torch perhaps instead of D/D?

Also the F1-F4 buttons should be something really cool that has to do with communing with spirits.

^Hammer should be our close up damage weapon, none of that condition bullcrap we already have on our other weps.

Full on brutal damage, crushing blows without no control crap. Maybe one launch or knockdown skill out of the 5 but nothing more.

And I mean big BIG damage.

Support Turrets that work like Spirits in GW1, see my post here somewhere about support turruts.

E.g. Turrets that grant boons once every few secs, or Turrets that soak up incoming dmg, Turrets that spew combo fields (fire, water, dark w/e).

The root of the problem is that you people whine too much, you yell X is overpowered so X is nerfed putting Y in the spotlight then the proces starts over.

So taking this by the source of the problem is permanent ban people that are unwilling to learn and adapt.

Support Turrets?

People like to link the Engineer to the GW1 Ritualist because of turrets and Ritu’s stationary spirits.

However, Engineers only have offensive Turrets aside from the Healing turret.
How about Turrets that like GW1 Spirits add an AoE effect that can support?

Turret Idea #1: Compound turret, randomly spewing a combo field (Fire, Ethereal, Dark, Water etc) that lasts 2 seconds every 10 secs.

Turret Idea #2: Blocking turret, randomly grant an ally near the turret Aegis triggers once every 20 seconds?

Turret Idea #3: Boon turret, grant all allies near the turret one random boon for 1-2 seconds. Every 8 seconds.

Turret Idea #4: Absorbing Turret, randomly direct incoming damage from one ally to the turret once every 20 seconds?

Turret Idea #5: Crowd Controller Inverter Turret, incoming crowd control effects on one random ally in turret range are reverted to one random enemy. Daze-> Player -> Launch Enemy.

I can go on and on with idea’s for turrets, why have these kinds of turrets not been implemented in the game from the first day? Why only offensive stuff and no defensive/supporting stuff? Why only traits to reduce incoming damage instead of expanding turret health pool and such?
