Proposed Changes for Engineer Turrets

the problem is turrets was that the average player is just not good enough to deal with them pre nerf. post nerf they are a really poor utility choice. classes should not have whole sets of utilities that are awful in every gamemode. regardless of what you think about AI, its just dumb to put skills in the game that players should not use. i’m still confused to why spirit weapons are in the game at all.

i would remove all damage from the thumper turret (have it only cripple and cc) and increase it’s health by a large amount. it’s a melee turret, it has to be able to survive in AOE or else it just can’t do it’s job. it used to useful in some non turret builds, but has been nerfed into uselessness. rocket, rifle and net can all be placed out of ‘danger’ but the thumper can’t.

i played turret engi a few times (made a tiny orange asura asura that looked like a carrot), it was alright but too boring for me and can only really bunk far. it was strong mostly because the average pvp player sucks. here is a scenario that happens to me all the time that just shows how dumb these people are: i play celestial bombs (with Egun and mine) and when i’m on point and i see a thief coming i will lay my mines and start auto attacking with bombs. guess what happens next, oh yes that’s right the thief will teleport themselves into my AOEs and take massive damage. next they stealth, then try and reengage on low hp and die. this is not a one off encounter, this happens to me all the time. it’s a monstrously abysmal tactic, and will never work yet so many thieves do it again and again. i don’t understand why they think teleporting into AOE is a good idea, but they just wont stop.

my point being that the average pvp player (or at least the average thief) uses awful tactics and refuses to change them, hence why turret engineer caused so much rage (you have to fight it in a particular way). i think these players who refuse to think about why they loose and change tactics deserve to suffer far more than the turret engineer.

unranked has all the maps you mention. ranked has only three due to those being the more ‘serious’ maps that have tournament rotation.

so, just play unranked if you want more map variation, or play ranked if you do not.

In game VOIP/VoiceChat a good idea?

considering how foul HotM map chat is, VOIP would be a moderators nightmare. people are complaining on the forums about toxic pvp players constantly, and some of the posts you see in the forums are very toxic. giving players the ability to shout at each other will only make things worse.

mute button sounds good in theory, but let’s look at an example to illustrate why it’s not a true solution:

your name is Brian, you are 15 and live in London. you bought guild wars 2 one month ago and have been really enjoying your necromancer in pve. you like the well of blood and the signets. stealing health is really cool, you’re like a dark vampire. on a whim you give pvp a try. you try and assemble a similar build to what you were using in pve and que up for unranked. you are verbally bullied by more experienced players in the first match (gw2 has such kittene match making that it does put the rabbit in with the sharks). even after muting them they still insult you in chat. the rest of your next few games are similar, causing you to never come back to pvp again.

the problem with a mute button is it does not prevent the abuse, it only prevents further abuse. players have no idea who they will get teamed up with, and only know a player is toxic after they have been abused. verbal abuse is much worse than simple text abuse, and is much harder to moderate.

ah, but could the player not mute all mics before the game? perhaps turn them off in settings? sure, but not only has this made having VOIP pointless but it also alienates them from the rest of the community who do use VOIP. people will be told to unmute mics in chat, and more than likely insulted for doing so.

adding inbuilt VOIP would have great costs to the community. costs that are far outweigh the benefits from anet’s perspective. it has the potential to damage player retention, game reputation and the community in huge irreversible ways. it’s not a good idea to add it.

healing turret

I don’t understand where everyone is coming from when they say that the healing turret is useless now. I use my healing turret as I always have: If I only need a little healing, I put it down, overcharge it and then pick it up. If I need a big heal I put it down, over-charge it and then detonate it to blast the water field. I haven’t seen any loss of effectiveness in my healing turret since the patch, even in SPvP.

I’m with Gern here. if I end up leaving my turret sitting it’s because I screwed up. if I’m not detonating it I’m picking it up immediately to get that 15sec cooldown ticking.

HT isn’t OP, it’s just like with Healing Signet on warrior- the alternatives are just bad.

an arena for duels would be nice, but the jumping puzzle suggestion is very shortsighted. a jumping puzzle will be completed by most players quickly after the patch, and then will be abandoned. I can’t see players repeatedly doing the same jumping puzzle again and again. it will only solve the problem of bordem for a week or so.

I’ve been running rampagers armour with celestial accessories and it’s been working well. since engineers can utilise all stats lots of uncommon armour stats will work on them.

You should be allowed to quit penalty free if this happens

The design is pretty amazing, probably these elite specs (in general) will be super strong initially and a fast balance will be necessary but i really appreciate the attempt to create innovative skill no brainless with great team sinergy.

AMR and power shoes need to be saved. elixir infused bombs would be nice to keep, but it’s not too bad (I say this as someone who runs this trait on my main build).

I can’t see any reason for a mesmer not to sacrifice a trait line for the elite specialisation. the f5 is so strong not taking it is a bad move, I mean double moa come on.

Sorry, I meant specs. But at least shoutbow is close to not being cancer even though it’s easy mode.

look bud, I like your play and your full yolo builds but not everyone is going to run zerk so you can kill them easily. I run valk shouts (ham sw/sh) on my warrior, and sure it’s hard as hell to kill- but is it braindead? I don’t think so, I gotta watch my teams health and condis, peel with cc, interrupt ressess and stomps, get ressess and stomps without having stab, and in general play well. there are more roles than full dps. people are going to continue to run bunker and bruiser specs because they are good for the team.

cele is a nice middle ground between bunk and dps, it sacrifices a lot of offense for support. zerker engineer can literally 1 shot people with a combo, cele engi can’t do anything like that, but it sustains well and does good damage. not only is it better in teamfights, but unlike zerker engi it does not have a ‘thieves you gotta kill me it’s so easy’ sign stuck to it’s back. it’s gonna be interesting to see zerker physical warrior emerge, hopefully it can stand up to the new thief (SA op why the 50% dog reduction why). but it has to be recognised that thief makes most classes zerk options unviable.

look I don’t play mesmer, but I know ya’ll do- I want you playing this spec if you are on my team. warrior or engineer there is some dope kitten we will be able to pull off. quickness me up reduce the cooldowns on my healing shouts oh yeah, it’s gonna be power.

Amulets and Runes

a lot of builds went into vitality and toughness lines for the combination of stats and defense. with the supposed stat increase on amulets, and the mild base stat change these effects will be mitigated to a degree, but it’s still a big overall nerf. 30% duration on condis disappears from my condition engineer, all the boon duration gone. many classes used traits to increase their meagre health pools, and buff their low armour. I’m thinking survivability will take a bigger hit than damage, but the real killers are the condition and boon duration.

Condition damage, boon duration, and Condition duration should be the only thing taking a noticeable hit. They said you are getting most of the stats from trait lines added into baseline and amulets. That 300 vitality from speccing fully in a trait line you should be getting most of that for free. Or did I not read what they said correctly? I mean how it can it be otherwise what do they want the low hitpoint classes running around with 12-13k heath in pvp if they don’t choose an amulet or rune set with vitality?

you don’t just get 300 vit or toughness though, there are secondary attributes. for warrior the toughness comes with healing power also, super important for shout builds. we are in essence loosing 1400 stat points. people underestimate how important those stats are, especially since the stats from traits often compliment the amulets stats.

I don’t think we will be compensated for it enough, so yes I do think we will see a lot of tiny health pools and low toughness.

the new shadow arts is insane, so thief is a likely contender.

however, most of the angry community play glass builds and hate things they can’t kill with their burst combo, so I foresee some mighty warrior hate. they will never understand that tanks builds do ‘insane damage’ because they are full glass.

Rifle needs more love

new skills would be dope (I really like that smoke one), but rifles big problem is it’s lack of damage. I would slow the fire of the auto and dramatically increase the scalling. zerk warr should be able to hit at least 2k auto crits, LB ranger can and it’s the same style of weapon. sure, rifle can hit hard in WvW but that’s only because the stats are so inflated.

rifle is unpopular because it’s only good skill is killshot, none of the other abilities have enough damage or utility to be worth while. why have a long range single target power based weapon that does low damage?

Hambow has an incredible amount of team support through offensive peels my frand.

For the record I think Hambow is viable right now on terms of 1v1 and small scale fights, I do think it is lacking compared to current celestials because they are more valuable to take, and warrior cant really compete for a DPS spot. If it got hammer damage back I think it would be worth it to take Hambow over dd ele or Shoutbow due to the utility it offers in the form of cc.

only cc hambow has that my hamshout doesn’t is pindown, but I have that shieldbash to set up final thrust with. I got 4 shouts that AOE heal for 2k and remove condis. also 2k power and over 3k armour. might not have stab for stomp, but I am quite the friend in the midfight.

I can heal ya, peel for ya, and kill.

A simple: If you join EotM, you join the smallest team, would do it.

yeah that’s a good idea. it only stops people from playing with friends and guildies. no way annnnyyyyonee would care about that /s

(eotm is not serious or competitive, you don’t even get anything for winning.)

I see the relation between EotM and WvW similar to the one of rPvP and sPvP.
If you want to play with your friends go to wvw, if you just want to play a bit and do not care much with whom go to EotM.

Having said that: a small dialog (as in rPvP) that let you join smallest side immediately or wait for a place in your preferred side isn’t a big deal.

And you are right EotM is as less competitive as rPvP, still that doesn’t mean rPvP matches should be always 5:1-2 or EotM matches always 90:20-40. As this is not even not competitve, it isn’t a game anymore.

Playing with your friends could also be duelling your friends, practical impossible today, easy with an EotM where the server-team binding is dropped.

But what if we( me and my friend) have queues for WvW and want to play together? Or when my guild can’t get into border and we would like to play at EoTM against some other guild? Ur sollution die here Also unbalanced EoTM isn’t even anet’s fault, it is players fault for blobing at SFR and then having queues – being forced to play EoTM.

regardless, most of the players are uplvls and want to ktrain not fight- not that they really can anyway. you can’t create a fair match up with so many uplvls, 40 vs 40 sounds good sure but what if one side has 30 uplvls and the other only 20?

my pal, who has only been playing a few months won a 1v4 in edge today. he’s on a full zerk thief facing 3 uplvls and one 80, and he wins. how do you balance for that? he seems to be worth more than 3 uplvls, maybe more than 5.

balancing edge is just an unrealistic goal. it has multiple instances that have people constantly leaving and joining, often just trying to get the best ktrain. people believe that overgrowth is OP, so play more edge when green and give up easier when they are BL or FR. it’s filled mostly with uplvls who are just free kills, and don’t even want to fight. one AC can wipe whole zergs. oh yeah, and there is Hammer Kult and others of their ilk. guild groups are super powerful in edge, so if it’s 30 v 60 and the 30 has Hammer Kult they will win.

edge is by definition imbalanced, that’s why the match lasts 3hrs and counts for nothing.

Well you have read my reason above. At least one person here does so after reading the first post, so no hard feelings your way.

Yeah i can see the allure of mobile kit, and true – they are revamping the crate to be a turret. Though in all honestly I still consider the mortar kit a lazy, unimaginative solution.

It’s basically a grenade kit with bigger range and combo fields.
A placeable mortar (given it’d been done right, and not the abomination that it was) would be a balanced, unique gameplay mechanic, that would offer more then kit version to skilled player, while punishing hard brain dead gameplay.

It’s that kind of skill i want to see on my engi elite, and not just “bigger grenades” with no original take on it at all.

Also all that hype about mortar kit, but already stated truth is they’re changing it’s skills to suit it’s new nature. This might be the deal maker or breaker. But i for one have to say “yaaaaawn” at this “Grenade kit Mk 2”.

firstly it’s an AOE weapon like nades and bombs. it’s supposed to be focused around combo fields, which makes it more like a ranged bomb kit. cool if you ask me, especially with the range reduction on nades + removal of combo fields. looks like it might even have a unique nishe (gosh dang it’s almost like it was designed or something).

secondly your elitist attitude is dumb enough to be hilarious. of course standing still and
pressing 1-5 is more skillful than moving while fighting. I mean, yeah not moving takes a lot of skill homes. a stationary weapon offers far fewer tactical advantages than a mobile one, so it’s pretty funny you think it offers more when it has less functionality.

you talk about brain dead gameplay, and from what I can tell it’s moving while you fight? not really sure though, but I’m sure you the king of esports will enlighten me.

Honestly, the old design is really what brought me to the engineer class. It seemed like it was a perfect tool for WvW when you could launch mortar strikes from the walls.

Also the idea that i can use it, leave it and it could still be used by someone else. This brought the Team play support aspect of the game up a ton. Sadly now, the game seems to cater to a bunch of one man army players :/

homeslice, not only is mortar worse than any siege in WvW but it’s probably worse than whatever weapon the dude has using it. nades are always a better option. I get more use out of norn and charr elites than the literal joke that is the mortar, it can’t even crit lol.

This needs to be addressed and not buried. OG is grossly OP compared to the other 2 factions. It would be nice to get some kind of response about this, but I won’t hold my breath.

Maybe the other 2 factions are actually playing the real wvw with their friends and server mates instead of running around with a bunch of randoms fighting nothing but empty objectives..

Maybe or maybe not. I do not see much relation between both modes, and
I see absolutely no need to use the WvW fractions in EotM, if they provide only one thing to EotM: imbalance.

Next thing that needs a nerf is D/D ele and Cele Engi. Lets start by making slick shoes oil evade-able.

it is lol. I have evaded it multiple times, well the evade thing popped up and I was like you know outside of it. crazy huh? well, I do think it shouldn’t knock you down when you stay still- but that’s the only nerf cele needs. only reason cele engi seems good is the lack of stability and condi in the meta. not running the counters makes the build seem strong, but it’s utter kitten when the opponent is condi.

That’s why i’m giving a list of changes in my first post to make it usable in my eyes. Also before everybody jumps the #mortarkit bandwagon, here’s a little freebie for you:

It’ll get a nerfbat, a big one.
Do you honestly think things like launch ice mortar will stay as they are on kit that will have 0 uptime issues and 0 skill required to keep it operational? Cause i don’t belive it one bit.

mortar could not be worse than it is now. currently it is a complete joke. I cannot think of a situation where it would be useful (for pvp and wvw, you can pve with bundles lol). even with nerf the mortar can only go uphill from here.

the kit we get will be better purely because it’s mobile. that point alone makes it better.

I’m running hamshout with 00662 currently, and will be switching to 00666 when specialisations arrive. I don’t like builds without cc, and as such I will take fun (hammer) over meta. hammer is still a brutal cc machine and really works. still, I have no hate for shoutbow, and can’t see what’s so lame about setting people on fire and impaling them on your blade.

In fact both are broken (imbalance, PvD, Scoring, K-train, …) and should be replaced by something that works better.

Let me clarify: EotM has zero impact on me as a WvW player, so let it stay. I immediately thought of rewording my post after I wrote it, because I would never advocate for the deletion of PvP or PvE due to its lack of direct impact on me as a player — knowing full well that many of the people that play those game modes are also WvW players, and may well leave the game if they were removed. But it does have an impact. All those EotM instances use up server resources — server resources that very likely used to be allocated for real WvW.

the inverse is also true, as is the fact WvW uses resources that could be allocated to the ‘real gw2’ PvE. eotm is as ‘real eotm’ as WvW is ‘real WvW’, which is a fancy way of saying things are what they are, which is redundant.

people playing edge don’t care about your ppt, your pirateship, your meta builds, your raids, your upgrades, sup segie, they don’t care about the server and they don’t care about you. they don’t want to play WvW with you, so don’t force them. you are not God you are not important.

a lot of people just don’t think about anything but what abilities they are using. I have a pal who has been playing for a few months and although he has become somewhat decent at fighting he has no idea what classes his opponents are most of the time.

won a nice 2v1 in edge yesterday, used the full 1500 range for it and other roaming. was also using 1500 range when defending a keep in ebg also. reducing the range to 900 would be a massive nerf and would remove many play styles. I would not have been able to pull off many of the things I was able to. 900 range is not useful, it’s too low and you get ‘out of range’ notifications often. any engineer who does wvw will not appreciate them being nerfed out of relevance.

You could have the mortar instead for roughly the same purpose.

how good will mortar be for condi? will it have a minimum range? what about supply crate? mortar has been a joke since launch, i have no idea how good it will be. it might fire slow and do single high damage shells making is useless for condi or hybrid builds. plus you now have to give up supply crate. it’s a big trade off for a complete unknown.

you could just lower elixir H’s cooldown and have 409 cure one condi on toss and two if you drink it. if it was lowered to 20 secs, then when traited it’s a low cooldown heal with condi clear and might. HGH with mortar could be pretty potent if it has no minimum range.

The past 4 or 5 games I’ve been against premades and didn’t appear to have a team on my side. Each time I have been focused down by a burst team making use of portal plays they must have communicated over TS. I hope you can imagine how frustrating it is to be so much at the mercy of matchmaking. All I want is to play fair games at a high level. Without that, you will lose me to mobas that offer more chances to advance, and accurate representations of skill.

could have easily been 2 or 3 people on TS also. I find I have more success as a 3 or 4 man group. you are less likely to be matched up with premades, but if you are all in TS and good you can handle them a lot of the time. 3-4 people in TS make games against pug teams without TS mad easy. solo socks, and duo is iffy but if you can have 3 or more people in TS it’s so much better.

I have full celestial trinkets, and swap them between my two engineers. the norn runs zerk/assassin’s, and the charr rampagers. that being said, I never venture into pvp so it’s all wvw these sets. a lot of different sets will work with engineer depending on the build. the trusty rabid/dire combo is very nice for wvw.

Automated Response is an exiting trait that lowers condition duration at low hp. it’s other the same trait. also self regulating defenses has been moved up and now competes with backpack rgn. what a shame.

That’s right. The name was very similar, so I interpreted it as AMR when it is not.

Self Regulating Defenses competing with Backpack Regenerator does limit the engineer.

Especially considering you get a class like Warrior that had both Defy Pain (similar to SRD) and Adrenal Health (a regen skill based on adrenaline level) both in one traitline, the latter of which was proposed as a minor trait in the Warrior defense line. They still can take advantage of both damage negation and regen.

Backpack Regenerator should just become a minor trait, and AMR should come back either in the Alchemy or Tools line if it has no place in Inventions.

I would take AMR as a master or grandmaster in tools even. backpack rgn as a minor would be perfect, every kit running engineer has to take it.

I have this perfect healing bomb build, and the revamps to alchemy and inventions kill it. the loss of power shoes is major tears, AMR also.

falling damage traits rock in wvw, and with the new more vertical borderland they will be even more effective. the warrior one is even good for diving off walls into enemies due to the knock back.

There is an Automated Response (probably AMR) as a Grandmaster trait in Alchemy.

With AMR placed in Alchemy, you can also take advantage of Self-Regulating Defenses and Projection Injection (or Invigorating Speed) all in one traitline. Streamlined defense.

I play almost exclusively pvp, and recently leveled a second warrior and a second engineer to 80 with tomes, and used skill point scrolls to buy their traits (you get loads from pvp). if you play a good amount of pvp and win often you will get a lot of tomes, dungeon gear and other loot.
