Solo q and wait im afraid, if you play in primetime the Q times arent so bad. If your on anvil rock u might find free groups, if u q with a group the pops are usually a little quicker.
Dont really have much trouble with thiefs.
In hotjoins they are annoying bc there can be alot of them.
But, what class are you , if u want advice on how to deal w theifs, tell us ur class and we can give u the ways to beat them.
Or just play an underwater ranger, and never die ull wear em down eventually.
But overall, underwater combat is problematic as all hell.
Its a channel ability that costs alot of init, so they wont be able to chain spam it more than 2×. Swim away from it (they cant pursue), then it runs out and you can re engage.
If you want to play a class that isnt considered to be a tad weak, and a class that isnt a faceroll class.
the middle of the ground classes are thief and necro.
Guardian is also super in demand, it will find you teams the easiest. But, playing a bunker guardian will take a little bit of pratice, its the least intuititive way to play, but isnt hard to master at all.
Engies are good, BUT you to be really good to be good with them. If your new to spvp in this game, and want to be able to reach a competitive level of play fast, engy is not the class for you.
An old standard team would be like.
Guard, ele, mesmer, necro, theif.
nowadays you see stuff like.
ranger, ranger, ele,ele, guard.
Or mesmer, ranger, ele, guard, thief.
Engy ranger ele thief guard.
But basically you want a main bunker, and someone who can hold side point ( mesmer or ranger usually ). And a roamer, usually an ele. AFter that dps, which can be any mix of condition or power dps, MOST people use at least 1 power dps, be it thief , mesmer or warrior.
ERr too much effort, but ill point you in one direction.
On youtube Zoose uploaded a video. IF you search for d/d spellbook zoose, its probably the first pop up and has good information on playing a D/D ele.

I main a mesmer, and if i didnt have alot of games under my belt on thief, warrior and engy i can tell you right now i would think trap rangers are the most OP thing ever. They simply destroy shatter mesmers.

Arena net is aware that eles are too strong. Has commented on this.
And informed us they are getting a (small ) nerf.
Which is fair, they only need a small adjustment.

Its ok as long as people keep in mind the top class, and the bottom class, not so different in power.
Eles are the only thing even close to standing out.
Why are necros ranked so low? In any group battle or even duo, if you have a necro sitting in the back dropping conditions like crazy, it’s almost a guaranteed wipe for the enemy team if they aren’t prepared. They aren’t the best at solo, but sPvP is about teamwork right?
They aren’t really. 8 classes and they getting ranked 4th to 6th, so middle of the pack.
Warriors, and to a lesser extent engies are holding up the bottom.
Interupts are fantastic in this game, delaying aheal for a few seconds is a big deal.
Also stoping stomps is huge.
500 ping? I have that or more like everyday for stretches of time. Gd slow internets ><.
But ya it sucks, this game is extremely ping sensitive.
Ya its slow. But rank doesnt really do much for you other than appearence. Getting to 30 takes about 2 months if ur a frequent spvper, less if your hardcore.
And that seems to be the rank that u can weasle your way into most groups with.
The reason aoe is too strong is that it does the same, or sometimes even more damage than single target.
If both hits do 5000 damage, but one is aoe, its objectively superior. (all other things equal like cast time , cooldown etc).
Right now Aoe is too strong. Its not about merely providing more single target options its that SINGLE TARGET ABILITIES SHOULD HIT HARDER THAN AOES.
Variety =/ balance. A class can be balanced with only 1 viable spec.
Another class can have 8 ways to be played , all subpar.
More options isnt relevant unless they are viable options.
But a good example of the kind of thing you are talking about is people who want thief burst toned down. If theif burst got toned down, without any compensation to the class, they would become useless in high end play.

I havnt had any bugs related to chest dispersal myself though.
sometimes it takes a while after a tourny to get the rewards, like if you exit in the 2nd round, and are waiting for that tourny to finish to get ur chest.

this is actually a good point. making ratings visible without a solo Q could cause trouble.
The pvp system really needs a major overhaul.
But if ratings are attached to paids only, then , by defintion, nobody is solo quing there.
If they did something to make frees pop faster this would self correct.
1. Ele.
2. Guardian (though in a limited capacity. And nobody really complains about them because they dont die to them).
3. Ranger/mesmer. Kinda a tie in my book. Rangers seeing alot of love right now for good reason. mesmers have timewarp.
4. Thief. Good mobility and disengage and burst.
5. Necro. would be lower but signet res is great.
6. Engy.
7. Warrior.
I’d like to add i think the differences between 1 and 7 are not even that great. Eles only need a small tone down, engies and warriors only need a small facelift.

I’d rather have 1 option for teams and 1 for solo/duo than 2 options for teams and 0 for solo/duo. As the population rises due to having more interesting matches for new players (read: not 500-15), the game could potentially support team frees, solo frees, team paids, and solo paids.
Also, paids currently have working matchmaking, which makes them the perfect place for a 5-man team of rank ~10 players to practice together. If a low-rank team joins a free using the current system, they’ll probably win 5v4, win 5v4, lose 500-0 against a rank 40-50 premade.
New teams/players dont have alot of tickets, and wont win even half there paids. They would run out of the few they have too quick.
people should not be forced to solo Q in order to play with there team. I see rank 10 premades losing to pugs in frees frequently, simply because they are so inexperienced.
I want a solo Q. Don’t get me wrong, i’m just ssaying it would require a bigger rethink and rework than most people seem to understand.

But cash shop additions havnt been spoken about far as i know.
Frees are in a really rough place.
I rarely solo Q for them, if i dont have 5, but 2 or 3 people thats when i do frees mostly.
Generally stealth caltrop thiefs are useless bc u cant contest a point in stealth, and they are poo in team fights bc of there low dps.
Going after treb users or defending treb is the only concievable use for them.
Still, pretty useless in organized play all the same i would think. I cant recall the last i lost to a group running a caltrops thief.
A big part of why rangers are so popular in the meta right now is they are one of the only classes that can reliably hold the home point from eles. and who cna beat them in a 1on1.

It is op. Only consolation is that on no map that matters is water a factor.
However, i did once have a downed state fight in a temple of the silent storm with a ranger in water, cost u sthe match ><. but thats one out of a lot of games.
The longer you wait for a pop, the more likely it is you will end up in a match vs a team with a large gap in rank compared to you.
Of course if during your wait period another team , closely ranked ques, that can cause a instant pop. So it is possible to wait a long time and to get an evenly matched bout.
But in general, if ur waiting several minutes for a pop, expect a poor match up.
Well, the most hard cc you will see is net, knockback, immobolize from bomb.
So 3. There is of course more CC abilities but i dont think i know any engy specs that would run them.
Maybe if u count net turret from the ultimate its 4. But thats like, pretty much never there.
Also if you think thiefs and mesmers are the top of the power ladder, that just shows how ill informed you are.
Mesmers are strong at least, but thiefs are pretty middle of the pack in terms of balance.
I’d love Arenanet to publish some real data on population but I suspect they fear it would be embarrassing. SPVP population seems pretty low. There are approx 300 people in my guild, but at any one time its rare for more than 1 – 2 of them to be in the Mists.
you need to join a pvp guild.
Theres like 7 people in my guild, its rare for 1 or 2 NOT to be in the mists.
Theres no word on this. I hear they plan to release custom arenas. So presumably you coul make a password locked server and duel your heart out.

Nope. But, get yourself and your friend to join the same empty hotjoin server and you can do some 1vs1.
Hopefully nobody else joins and interupts. Though sometimes if you tell people you are dueling they will leave you be.
Rank is a terrible indicator of skill. But its not nothing.
Take a random sample of twenty people rank 40. And a random sample of twenty people rank 20. The odds are extremely high that the rank 40 people, on aggregate will be more skilled.
Even though it could well be true that in several instances it doesnt hold.
So it doesnt mean nothing, its a filter, albeit a weak one.
You can switch toons by logging off and back on. They wantt to fix this.
But yes it keeps you in the same tourny.
Also, you should be banned from doing tournies for a day for quitting.
Some penalty on quitters anyway needs to be imposed. Take your loss like a man.
Thats why they need an elo, because it more accurately captures where you are.
HOWEVER. Since rank is what we have, rank is what we use.
Rank is a weak proxy for skill, and an indiciation of experience.
Its rare to find a player at rank 40 who doesnt know how to play there class at least copmentently and who understands tourny rotations.
Conversely its rare to find someone below rank 20 who knows what they are doing.
At the very bottom of the hotjoin list, there are 5v5 servers. Try those, they’re a little better.
As of the January Temple week , 5v5 is basically exclusively dueling atm.
Its usually ok if u join one with 7 or 8 ppl in it.
These are legitimate concerns. Alot of people are pushing for solo/duo Q system, which would address this. but i doubt any fix is coming down the line soon as doing that sytem would require a huge redress.
Free tournies have gotten slightly better since most premades do paids now.
