People who didn’t want a pet, knew all along that they were suppose to roll Warrior instead or Thief instead. …both of which have had better Shortbow or Longbow skills than us SINCE BETA…

No we didn’t , i did not follow GW2 like a devoted fan, i just expected my ranger to work exactly how it did in the first installment of Guildwars, if that’s how Arena net works then no wonder players are dropping this game, we came here expecting choices not to be forced into 3 and a half year old bad decisions…

If i wanted to roll a Warrior or thief i would have, i wanted a ranger, like my Guildwars rangers sorry if that clashes with your totalitarian views..

It’s not * MY * view… that… is —> Anet’s “vision” for it. (not mine!) …which they made very clear from the beginning. The only thing I’m arguing is that exact sentence: that they made it clear from the beginning. People who playtested 40+ levels of Ranger in Beta … me included … were given a perfect view into how broken and unforgiving the “companion” system was. That’s why people like me who had been watching all this unfolding for years, rolled a guardian or warrior as our first “main” instead and only had a ranger as a side project to be supported by our benevolent Heavy Armor overlord.

I understand your frustration and that’s not me intentionally patronizing you. Your frustration and everyone else’s is very palpable here and maybe even with good reason. But there’s something to keep in mind here when referencing GW1. It wasn’t the Bow attacks themselves or even the damage on Bows that made them good in GW1 (crit build daggers & scythes completely left bows AND hammers in the dust on DPS), or even the fact you didn’t have to carry a pet everywhere. It was the Ranger’s primary trait that made them EASY TO BUILD GIMMICKS OUT OF b/c Gw1’s balance of power was crutching super hard _on energy management which isn’t a “thing” here in this game. If it was, then Rangers & Necro’s would be seen in every dungeon run to date (especially Arahs) and warriors would still be relegated to Manly-Spike only.

…and yes… this is an absolute irrefutable fact and made up the BULK of our conversations for years on end during GW2’s development cycles. So many things hinged on these mechanics that it’s not even funny but again; it’s very understandable that a lot of people could have missed these facts and came into this a bit unprepared by Anet’s platitudes on what a revolutionary and inviting (+ relaxed grouping reqs) game this was to be.

Unfortunately, Dungeons themselves are sort of dying off lately too… So the ranger’s place in the dungeon is kind of becoming moot at this point.

The only “dungeon” (which isn’t even a real dungeon path) seeing constant use is the Gold Farm and I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT NO ONE BUILD AN ALT FOR THAT YET IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE ONE. Reason being: Anet nerfed COF several times, not just here in GW2 pretty quick after launch, but they totally NUKED IT FROM ORBIT in Gw1 also.

Some people compared the changes to Spell Breaker & Holy Wrath to “smiter’s boon’ed”. … and with Anet, history tends to repeat itself. So if you don’t already have a totally DPS spec’d Guardian/Warrior then there’s no point in even investing in one this late in the game just to do dungeons when Colin already said there’s going to be massive rewards overhaul (that also means nerfs!) in about 2 months time.

Lightbringer Tybalt Leftpaw

ilr.9675

It was a pretty terrible setup either way. First b/c he’s an Engineer. Engineer’s hold up doors in an Assault by being BEHIND THEM, not out in front. Then there was the fact we only had about 100ft to go behind us and we’d be on the boat … We didn’t have to worry about this crud in the Sanctum Cay in GW1 that had the exact same setup. …Infact the more ‘pro’ among us found ways to also return the Ghost for Bonus while fighting off each wave.

And speaking of Ghosts … let’s not forget the Norn Captain in Orr who’s own body (and his crew) is controlled by Zhaitan yet their ghosts are standing out there perfectly uncorrupted. Where’s Tybalt’s ghost? Ghosts in GW1 are usually more capable fighters in just about every mission than they ever were as squishy fleshbags.

But back to the immersion that Anet broke on their own plotline here and why Twilight was a better love story than this… We get on a boat and the biggest worry when we’re at that door, is being pursued. but What just happened that caused us to light the Beacons? …about 20 Risen ships popping up after we kill the first one. Welcome to Shark-Jump Island! … one engineer … in front of a door on Land in the middle of the base… doesn’t protect us in any way from 20 bone ships that had all the time in the world to start surrounding our dock. (and don’t even get me started on the “Sunless” Lt-Dragon who FLIES)

And finally: for what they could have done here to show not just real depth, but real interactivity (Jeeezz…. even the Hardy Boys had better story branching than this!) … instead of automatically FORCING martyrism on the most sad-faced loveable uncle in Tyria, they could have given a bonus option to stay with him and try to pull off a much harder Langmar/Thackeray standoff while all the NPC’s we don’t care about take off in the boat.

…but wait, it doesn’t stop there… it has real consequences. You and maybe Tybalt too (if you’re really good) both manage to get out of it alive and wash up in bloodtide only to learn that nothing you did mattered. Infact what you both see along the way drives both of you to Edge. …see it’s stuff like this that made Episode 5 Empire Strikes back the BEST one in the series while what Anet did here instead was practically a Phantom Menace…

And instead of going out like a hero, Tybalt feels like a helpless coward for not doing enough & suffers overwhelming PTSD relapse for his failures that killed his first Warband. He gradually becomes more and more a shattered husk and a cautionary tale of the real cost of war as all these other second bananas around him sacrifice themselves while the story progresses. THEN you have a real vehicle for the reoccurring theme we see in this storyline plus a much needed likable character who’s actually bearing the consequence ….instead of ONLY having Treehernia who most ppl can’t stand b/c he’s made of wood in more ways than one.

..

And yes, I bought the AppleSeller’s Cog yesterday… 50 ectos I never actually needed to part with. Not out of respect, but out of pity. Pity for what could have been…

How to gain gold with craft?

The Margin is VERY SMALL … the same level of expertise & attention to {{details in research and Market utilization}} applied purely to Flipping instead of Crafting will always net a much larger Margin. Therefore crafting for profit is really only something those of us who hate speculation ever attempt. I made a small guide on it here somewhere …maybe on Guru?… but I forgot where now b/c it was over 7 months ago and is probably way out of date by now

Infact most of the time, I find it a lot easier (mentally) to just gather/supply a Raw material instead that’s overvalued … this has definitely been the case with certain herbs and T2/T4 mats that seem to have a much tight level range in zones that most people don’t spend much time in. Guesting has made it very easy to “get around” the arbitrary limitations Anet originally put on “gathering” these very poorly designed Nodes & Mob locations

The Quick Fix to Ranger Pets

in Ranger

ilr.9675

+1 all really solid ideas …. and already builds off of the game’s existing AI functions.

(lots of mobs already “flank” `around’ players and some even move directly behind them)

I’ll say it again. Allow pets to rally when you kill an enemy.

It’s not a bad idea, but I can see one major problem. It’s not going to address the issue of pet’s survivability during boss fights in dungeons, when the only enemy to kill will be the boss himself.

This has been a subject we really need more discussion of in general in the Dungeon and Dynamic Events forum. In a lot of cases, there’s just NO “rally’able” mobs anywhere around you even when you die far enough from the Legend-Boss to be safe from most of its followup AOE’s. The AC & TA bosses for example are supposed to be easier because of how much stuff there is to rally off of, while Subject-Alpha, Lupicus, & Priest of Grenth all see much higher failure rates OR Exploiting for Pubs who have nothing to rally off of

  • (P.O.G. mostly b/c the SHADES spawn too quickly AND/OR have their Hitpoints scaling up way too high for anyone to even kill them so everyone else just crowds the SkillPoint location while those few of us brave enough to pull Shade Duty… don’t get ANY CREDIT AT ALL for our part in the event since we don’t even have time to tag Grenth…. and tagging him is the worst thing we could do by the way b/c that would just needlessly endanger Jonez who already dies in 1 hit)

Ah yeah right. I get it. I only play the ranger because I wanted the pet. You never played Guild Wars 1, did you?

don’t even go there b/c I’ve got more hours than you ever did… (5000)
Anet was very clear about this design from the Start. They took their failed “Companions” mechanic they originally had planned in GW2’s earliest public info dumps, and rolled it into a single class. If you don’t want to play that class, then why are you here?

You can “expect” all you want from it. Many people tried to back before beta even launched and we actually had * SHOCKER * real conversations with the Devs on Guru about that reality when everything was still in planning stages. Ultimately, your position is forfeit now and about 3-1/2 years too late. I’m sorry you missed the boat.

People who didn’t want a pet, knew all along that they were suppose to roll Warrior instead or Thief instead. …both of which have had better Shortbow or Longbow skills than us SINCE BETA… If you’re still here, then it’s because you WANTED a pet. Anyone who claims they don’t, is either trolling, or just too new to the game to understand what they’re expecting of this class…

Therefore the OP’s idea can’t be supported b/c it makes our fulltime companion into something that’s disabled/stowed by Default.

A proper solution (PVE-ONLY!) would simply have the pet take on a pure Support role when placed in Passive mode or recalled from F3. …similar to the way that Spirits already function, by proc’ing 2 buffs dependent on what species of pet was chosen. However that proc’ing would build over time as long as certain conditions were met on whether that pet was either taking damage or not taking damage “while at _its master’s side”:

  • Birds: increasingly grant more Swiftness & Fury until they take damage
  • Cats: increasingly grant more Quickness until they take damage
  • Bears: increasingly proc Protection/Conjuration the more damage they take
  • Canines: increasingly proc Knockdown & Regen the more damage they take
  • Devourers: increasingly proc Might/Conjuration until they take damage
  • Drakes: increasingly proc Condition/Protection the more damage they take
  • Spiders: increasingly proc Immob & Might until they take damage
  • Pigs: increasingly proc RandomTraps & KB the more damage they take
  • Moas: increasingly proc Dazing & Regen the more damage they take

.

Disclaimer:

  • This might need … or NOT need… I’m not sure which yet… a very slightly different mechanic for pets being dead.

State of the Game - suggestions/questions

Hey there again guys!
Just wanted to let you know that I’ve actually read through all of your posts so far, some really great questions and suggestions in it and they’re constructive.
My time today is rather limited, but i will try to compile a priority list tomorrow ( latest on monday) on what I want to ask and talk about on the SotG.
I’m afraid I propably won’t be able to put all of your questions/suggestions in – so sorry in advance for that.
Also this thread actually has more replies then Supcuties general thread for the SotG in the spvp forums.
Last but not least thanks a lot for your encouragement guys.

Okay that’s good…. But how about also telling us before hand which things you’re definitely going to ask … atleast in short-form (we don’t need your final draft, just some rough ideas please!!).

See the problem that’s ALWAYS existed in any of these types of threads, is that we always have to wait until after the interview takes place to find out and by then we don’t always know b/c sometimes the questions the devs refuse to answer get edited out or something….

And thank you for doing this and bringing it here! It would generally get a lot less exposure if kept exclusive to Guru…

The real problem is that rangers don’t scale well damage wise with gear. I suspect that the next balance patch will adress this.

I agreee…

But is this anticipated change a matter of speculation?
If it’s a source you can’t reveal then I’m sympathetic to that though.

The problem isn’t ranger (ok, it is problem too lol), but whole stupid design of melee dmg > ranged dmg. I know there is no split between melee and ranged classes like in most games, and the system rewards changing between two, but it’s still stupid I cant go full ranged without losing dmg.

It’s a simple fact of life and you’re just going to have to accept it. There’s strong math behind it and if you’ve never actually tried PLAYING melee ranger or any other melee focused build then you need to try it first to understand why. And it’s not just because “you’re in more danger in melee”. Try just “tagging” every mob around you in a busy event sometime as melee… It’s a lot harder than it sounds. Usually by the time you get there it’s already 3/4’s dead, if you’re lucky. The amount of DPS you can actually put out as a Melee is very very limited by how quickly you an get in close range with that target so you can easily lose a lot more than 50% of your suppose’ed potential DPS

It’s the entire reason my Warrior in GW1 (which is now my Ranger here) always dual-spec’d Recurve bow along with her Hammer spec. Yes it made my minmax stats slightly weaker over all but who cares when you’ve got Req-8 max weapons and full Sentinel’s armor? It was the only way to assure 90%+ uptime on her DPS.

In this thread: idiots that want 1500 range to deal the same damage as melee.

Actually, there wouldn’t be anything wrong with that… IF anet were to introduce a second kind of Bow to the Ranger that actually required manual aiming sort of like Chivalry or an FPS game. Obviously it wouldn’t have Barrage or any other AoE’s made easy skills… but when it hit, it could certainly “cleave” in a straight line just like our Piercing Arrow trait and do even more damage than most Melee chains deal, so long as it required some kind of skill-check. …infact that alone could make us one of the best ‘Dungeon classes’ in the game for certain dungeons that actually have proper open space for longer shots…

  1. Instead of 1.5 sec Auto…10 stacks of Vuln + Bleed “called shot” with a 3 sec cooldown & unscoping like most `Bolt Action` sniping functions.
  2. could be a channeled shot dealing exponentially more dmg the longer it’s charged.
  3. would be a Cripple that also summoned ‘Entangles’ if target was moving.
  4. could be broadhead arrow (would love to see that skill make a come back)
  5. could be the Bleed + Vuln Preparation that also Camouflaged you.

in Dynamic Events

Just got double-tagged for 40,000 damage from 2 of these at once…

I can only assume that such ridiculously high numbers like that are caused by Event Scaling itself on a type of calculation that should really be “throttled” somewhere along its process…. especially considering the game gives us no actual discernible feedback on WHAT causes it… and usually no warning or telegraph either since they don’t produce ‘red circles’ first and may not even be rendering for the player struck by it.

Lyssa in general is too much of a clusterkitten right now. However it worked before, they really need to go back to that format and MAKE SURE that the people guarding the exterior Shrines get full credit and therefore full access to the Chest. This would help the Rendering & Scaling issues immensely…

Allowing for permanent pet stow and immunity to AoE damage would help a lot for example.

Pet stow is an incredibly bad idea. To make it simple to understand, it’s almost as if ArenaNet told us tomorrow that, in order to balance rangers, they are removing them from the game and all ranger characters will be changed into warriors.

The pet is the ranger’s main exclusive mechanic. It isn’t even the most subpar mechanic, between traps and spirits. ArenaNet should fix the pets, not take the easy path of making it easier to ignore them.

Well that… and the fact that half of our Hitpoints and DPS are also locked inside that other `companion` . And then looking at the Balance changes they just added, it’s clear that Anet doesn’t actually want to reward “skill” on this class for timing all our Micros just right b/c that lead to bunkering (oh dear god no!) yet Guardians got nothing but buffs and they’re the #1 bunker class (esp in Dungeons). Yeah good luck explaining that one…

I can’t tell if this is a problem with unintentional Contradiction in design …
or just straight up hypocrisy. :p

Pathetic.

Barely ANY of the “achievement” points you can get in this game, come from Dungeons … and almost none of the OTHER content that gives them, is anything like the Dungeons either. Now maybe if someone got most of theirs from high level PvP, that’d be a different story but you can’t see that level of detail anyway so it doesn’t matter.

Question for the OP though:
Was this a real dungeon group you were kicked from, or that stupid gold Farm that doesn’t even belong in this forum??

You just have to read it for what it is: IE: “sorry but no one’s getting special attention, and the forum that squeeks the loudest doesn’t get the grease in our book”. It’s actually very consistent with their approaches in GW1. Getting any positive Ranger changes (purely PvE split ones) was like pulling teeth then too, and the only reason we got any is b/c a new “head” Dev had just been put in charge while these other guys shuffled off to the new toy (beginning their designs on GW2). Not saying we took advantage of that dev, we just got lucky I guess and actually got our voices heard on making the pets suck less in PvE. We weren’t actually allowed to post suggestions though…. so they still did all the “creative” sides of it themselves… and as expected, the results were mostly mediocre at best and they continued to be shunned in dungeons

The other classes can but none of them fit the stereotype as well as the ranger. Particularly as most rangers player are attracted to the ranger for the wrongbow. You don’t really see a lot of players state how much they wanted to play ranger because of the Greatsword.

The problem with the ranger class goes beyond its own class mechanic, it attracts a certain type of player, that seeks it for the whole idea behind playing a ranged class in the first place.

Right.
Even in my case where I’m using ReefDrake & Greatsword 90% of the time, and only switching to Bear/Wrongbow to “PoolShoot” or lure one of the straggler mobs back into the heap with the rest of the ones being AOE’d… there’s still a HUGE disparity in the GROUP DPS that it can provide when compared to my Guardian who is even a bit on the squishy side TBH. My guardian for instance keeping 12 stack of might on the whole team and also has a Hammer in order to get those straggler mobs back in the heap where they belong…. PLUS better reflecting thats almost Perma, Elite spammable MEGAHEALZ, and just plain better aggro management in general.

Yeah … you can * play * support ranger or support engie if you want to (I’ve done it myself!), but why bother?? Guardian and Ele do it so much better. Hell even Mesmer does it better now with how badly Beastmastery got kittened in the Kit

It doesn’t matter how well you play these sub-par classes. B/c the disparity between them and the truly great support classes is like night and day and you’re only taking it where the sun don’t shine when you try. It even works this way with pure-twitch games. Sure you could be an awesome sniper and kill half their team yourself in CSS with the Autosnipers, but why when you could be killing their WHOLE team with the AWP?

Some people were running dps guardians shortly after launch and were laughed upon, heh. Anyway, I believe most decent groups run 2 guardians and one of them is that so-called anchor.

It’s going to start being 3 pretty soon since they were the only class that received nothing but improvement in this update and suffered very little power shifting in traits.

Ranger is definitely done for though. Those nerfs to Zypher’s & Barrage was enough to kill it for me in even in the “easier” dungeons. I’m not even sure I can keep playing this in Open world anymore… I might just take another long break from the game entirely b/c I really don’t want to be forced to make my Guardian yet another DPS’ing clone. I dont go to this dungeon anymore because it is not challenging due to stacking (which is not an exploit but I find boring and too easy) and spots where the boss cannot hit you.

And like many others have probably done each path over a hundred times literally.

+1
stacking killed it for me. Used to do this one every week. No more.

State of the Game - suggestions/questions

No Brainer right here since its basically still a “improves PvP” development question:

  • WHEN IS ANET GOING TO START DOING MORE SKILL SPLITTING AGAIN ?

.

PS: this isn’t just a ranger’s rage question either… this also applies to Warrior being absolute worst in PvP but absolute best in PvE?? WHAT??? How’d that happen, that didn’t even happen in GW1. You’d had to have screwed up pretty badly somewhere for such a massive disparity like that to be the meta between both modes. :p …infact multiple classes are all suffering similar disparities here and they get worse with every patch

No we’ve already had it mentioned in a few other threads that it was nerfed as well.
No PVE split there either even though it was already pretty anemic for anything besides “yellow” Objectives that had hitboxes large enough to be hit by multiple tics.

All things aside, you must have quite an interesting way of defining what is, and what isn’t civil. So far, the way you write your posts suggests that in fact you have problem not with people being uncivil, but that they complain at all.

This

If all you’re going to do is attack strawmen Jubs, then please do what you say you’re going to do, and leave already. You’re not helping this thread get back on track by extending and escalating the arguments over what tactics are called or uncalled for. You’re the not the sole judge of that, It’s majority rule.

Forget “super elite dungeon” speed clears (most boring god danged thing in the game IMO). At the “new improved” Jormag today I spent all my time rezzing these Zerker idiots instead of actually shooting the kitten thing in the head. Yeah some Pro build that is… it takes them 10 extra minutes to kill this thing now b/c they spend all their time on their backs. Sorry, but you can’t ‘stack up’ & dodge dragon breath apparently :p

meaningful discussion this way. Tell me I’m right, tell me I’m wrong, don’t care, just read and respond with feedback of your own and not general complaints. Give alternate suggestions,if mine suck. Maybe with some momentum we can get something done…

Wasting your time. Nothing short of going to WA. and marching on their front lawn would get them to raise an eyebrow right now. That probably wouldn’t even change much but it would result in some questions followed by non-canned answers. And good luck cornering them at a convention until they’ve got a new expansion to hawk…

I do really well with GS, I can’t say how relieved I am that it didn’t get NERFED ANY FURTHER. ….but it’s still not what it used to be in Beta. It may be intuitive, but so is Warrior’s and their’s does a lot more DPS than ours even post-nerf.

And the WORST…
…THE WORST
thing about about it and melee in general is that even when I’m doing really well with it and blocking/evading everything the mobs can throw at me…. my pet is just standing there dying a sad sad sad death that can’t be avoided. When I’m ranging, I can atleast YoYo it back and forth to evade the rarely-telegraphed 1-hits. But the biggest thing missing from Ranger at close ranger, is SYNERGY WITH THE PET.

GW1 was oozing with Melee+Melee pet synergy b/c we could customize 8 skills and one of them was whatever Elite we wanted in the whole entire Game. That was amazing, that’s what real synergy looks like.

Meanwhile at Range…. I’m not joining the bandwagon here crying for more direct DPS. We get it, Anet wants range to suck regardless of class or what hoops they have to jump through… But how about some more Quickness?? Nothing feels more ‘pro’ on Ranger to me than when I’m able to actually activate things at a fast enough rate to keep up with my old Gw1 Twitch-routines. Faster arrows helped a little there but 15% (which sure as hell ain’t no “Read the wind”) isn’t going to change every other reputation working against us or how BORING mainhand Axe is. If Thieves get Torment, then we should be the masters of Quickness. We should be able to maintain a 50% quickness uptime with ANY weapon set. And even our stupid Pets should be getting it in PvE so their long animation skills don’t turn them into sitting dead ducks in end-game content.

As usual, ‘balance’ has been solely dictated by spvp to the detriment of everyone else playing the game.

I’m glad I don’t do dungeons (or pve at all) as after this patch the chances of getting a group as a ranger are even lower than they were before.

Exactly. My post (conveniently right above Sharp’s) really hinted at this. Maybe I could be more direct, but Anet themselves could be a lot more direct on this as well. We know from past history that their “Balance” is currently lacking the only 2 people who ever made PvE considerations for the soul sake of PvE (& now WvW). And those people aren’t Isaiah Cartright and Jon Peters… and We know from what sPVP’ers have been saying that even they’re not consistently happy with the ‘vision’ behind those Tourneys & the complete lack of GvG or other Objective & WinCondition modes. But atleast those sPvP’ers have SOMEONE they can direct those frustrations towards and as this update proves… actually see those things get changed.

But where the hell is our PvE representative on the Balance team? This isn’t about Rewards. Colin is handling those and we’re patietntly *(or not) awaiting his detailed blog on it. We need Robert Gee or someone new who will stand up for the classes being “cared about equally” in this other game mode too, no matter how gimmicky or “farmy” or “zergy” that game mode might be. Failing that, we atleast need a better Test-Server program here. To Hell with this super-secret private “Krewe” thing, it’s obviously not working anyway if so many things get leaked from it anyway!

Well that escalated quickly.

The funny part, Sharp’s not saying anything untrue there…. It’s just clever Omittance.
They have their one game mode that every change currently revolves around, and they only have limited time for each class. And each class got about the same amount of attention at the end of the day. …there’s really nothing to over-analyze here.

Hahaha… I get more for chopping a tree in this game…. in a level 10 zone, then I get for soloing a level 80 Champion in this game….

I don’t even know why Champions exist other than to screw over newbies who just want certain Skill-Points or map completion. None of them are fun to fight… that’s for sure

What’s the point? With the exception of the blood, those aren’t even staple crafting commodities … and none of them are used for making food.
