After two days of playing much more HoT than I initially intended I can take back my initial disappointment.

I started in this thread advocating for ANet saying that there’s nothing wrong with their design, even though it’s not the one I would have preferred. After getting into HoT on Friday to see the exact design they went with I became disheartened. I did not expect to have so little control about how I leveled through the new content. I was especially upset because of where it put my Revenant who had no chance to build points before release.

It’s been two days now and from just playing the content, and doing some of the story, as well as the prologue on something to the effect of five or six characters, I’ve unlocked teir 1 jumping, teir 2 gliding, and I’m working on exalted language. With just these three teirs I have full access to the maps on all my characters. I know where all of the points in the first map are and can easily get or skip them as I please. So far I’ve only skipped two because they’re too hard to solo. I look forward to finding an expedition to deal with them eventually, or not.

I don’t have a problem with the design. I’m playing a Scrapper, a Daredevil, a Berzerker and a Dragonhunter and they’re perfectly sufficient as is. I’m holding back on Herald for now, but I’ll get around to it.

You’ve already unlocked 4 full elite specs since the game released 65 hrs ago? Don’t know what to say to that except proof plz.

Don't understand all these spec complaints...

Look at it this way. If being able to even create a Revenant was gated in the same manner, how would you feel? Elite specs are not a big accomplishment, they are a base game mechanic.

And so if even this is locked, what am I actually supposed to do here? Have we paid all this money just a for a treadmill that will reward us at some point in the future? What are my new toys to play around here? A new pretty, but poorly thought-out zone which I can run around while doing the same old stuff?

I don’t remember base GW2 being this way. In there I created a character and had fun with it from the start. In HoT “fun” is a distant prospect.

last time i checked the revenant was not an Elite Spec but an out right class, the rev has the herald as there elite spec and i have yet to get my rev to level 80 but i think the herald would be just the same as the rest of the elites.
in the core game if i remember right you create the toon and it starts at level 1 and then you level it all the way to level 80 how is that any diffrent from HOT you start hot with a level 80 toon the proceed to level the elites.

If you took a little time to read the posts the arguments are all there listed over and over again. Read the main topic that has 60k+ views and over 2500 posts. If you still don’t get it then, you probably won’t.

It’s still too early to judge, give it a month.

I know the new locations look hard to navigate and pretty challenging, but when you unlock masteries traveling become really easy.

I predict if it takes them a month to get their stuff figured out, you’ll see a mass exodus of a large portion of their more casual player base. At least enough so that the hardcore grinders who have thus far been unwilling to compromise, will complain about not enough people around..

Hero Points

I am going to drop a question in here that I have not been able to get an answer to just researching.

I ran my new revenant through a lot of the old world map to open up way points and along the way I hit all the skill points I came across. Will those skill points count towards my new Hero point needs? Or am I only able to obtain the necessary Hero points in the new HoT area for unlocking my elite skills and masteries?

If you get all the hero points in old world tyria you still only have half the required points to unlock your full elite. Get ready to spend the same time you just spent leveling your new reverant, again. It’s a two time level system for only one new trait line if you start a character from scratch. gl

This is not a threat of permanent quitting, simply what I’m doing right now.

I’ve been exited about this expansion ever since the first video was released regarding elite specs. For me it was finally an opportunity to spice things up and get some new abilities and ways of playing. I was one of the first to pre-purchase HoT. I bought the $100 one because I believed that strongly that this was going to be a truly awesome gaming experience based on what they said it would be and my own experiences already playing the game.

Now a couple days into the release and I’ve never been this frustrated with a game as I am with this one (system that denies our basic new specs until most content is exhausted).

A previous post of mine explains my reasoning for why I’ve now decided that for the time being I simply can’t play a game I love….only 2 days after expansion release.
————————————————————————————

We were all led to assume from when videos were first released about elites that it was a core enticement to buy the game. Who could have imagined this nutty elite gate which makes you play through the content of hot b4 you can unlock the elite for Hot.

In betas we were given immediate access to elites and no access to test the hero point system.

We weren’t told how hero points would work until only few days before and even then most were expecting something close to what we already had. Not walls within walls.

The lack of information on this essential selling point of the game was withheld and now many many people are feeling betrayed , and that this isn’t what they thought they were buying.

How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?

I totally agree with you psizone, people are allowed to complain and have an opinion and I’m not shooting them down for that, what I am saying however is that there are so many people moaning about the expansion for unjust reasons.

It isn’t a grind and but it difficult and time consuming, as i’m sure it is supposed to be.

It seems that people expected everything to be handed to them on a plate and because they cant max out everything in a matter of hours are taking exception to it and complaining it.

The whole point of an expansion is that you get countless hour of extra gameplay or your money, which is exactly what we are getting and I for one think it makes a nice change that it is challenging and time consuming, so when you do eventually get the mastery or the legendary weapons, you feel like you’ve earned it and not just turned it on and get it for doing nothing in return.

The elite specs do take a lot of work and a massive amount of hero points, but its not like you cant access them from the start, you just don’t get access to the full set of skills, which again takes time and effort. Its early days, who knows, the devs may look at lowering it over time, but rather than focusing on what you cant have at the moment, focus on what you can achieve in such a small amount of time and work from there, there’s no rush with these things.

Obviously this is just my opinion and I don’t speak for everyone else but that’s how i’m looking at it

At level 80 and before HoT release, how many times have you run around with a weapon that requires a trait line, but an empty trait line for it? How many times have you run around with 2 1/2 of 3 lines active? Sure we get a teaser of the spec , but we’re running around kitten until most of the HoT zones are explored; and since the primary first focus of many player is getting their new shiny elite, that means a lot of people feel forced to play as quickly as possible to get that elite. That combined with knowing the system is setup to take 16 – how many ever hrs it takes on an individual basis to get that, it leaves a feeling of frustration and grind instead of enjoy-ability in playing the content.

leftyboy.9358

Also the expansion is hardly grindable… but that depends on what meaning players associate to grinding, which might be anything from the chest farming from SW to “oh i am grinding my life right now”

The expansion itself isn’t a grind, unlocking the Elite specs in a reasonable time is. That seems to be what the majority of people are complaining about (see the 52 page thread on it) which is completely understandable, not being able to play the Elite specs without 30-40 hours of just trying to get hero points is hard going for one spec, never mind doing it on alts.

People are allowed to complain. This is all new to Anet, too, they need feedback to understand what is going right with this launch and what people are not enjoying or having trouble with. Shunning people and mocking them for having a complaint is both uncalled for and kinda mean, everyone has their own opinions so if a percentage of the playerbase feels strongly about an issue, why shouldn’t they be allowed to post it in the forums? (the mocking people part wasn’t directed at you, but I’ve seen some nasty posts here and on reddit about people)

That said, complaining is only fine if it’s calm and doesn’t throw insults to other players and the devs. We need to ask for a change, not pressure them with talk of quitting.

A reasonable person who disagrees with my view on hero point system without throwing out that people who believe it should be changed are whining, crying, or otherwise childish. TY

Feel like it will remain the way it is, it’s been to long into to the expansion for a change.
Now it would make the people that grindinded like crazy feel like they did it for nothing if they change it.

The group of people you speak of don’t care to compromise and relax on this one issue. That group of people have been calling us whiners, criers and babies from the get go. So sorry but I don’t feel bad when anet finally relaxes the hero point grind. If they get their feelers hurt so be it.

^ When making key game decisions that affect millions of players? no, they won’t make their decision based on what 2500 complain about.
BTW there’s a difference between forum complaint and constructive feedback.

And why wouldn’t they? I find that in game more people I interact with are frustrated with having to grind one of 2 options to get hero points: WvW Ktrains, or the Map completion. And to add to this there are nearly an un-listable amount of tangential problems with the hero point system.

It is broken, it needs a fix, and I hope the devs are not too dumb to realize that.

That’s not even true, I have not met a single person complaining in game about this. Except the rank 4 mastery thing which devs are fixing. During my 20 hours play session I have not met a single person in game complain about HoT, all I heard was praise. And I don’t even know there are people hate mastery before I read forums.

By and large people are fine with masteries. The main issue driving forum criticism right now is the hero point system for unlocking elites and that’s also what the OP was saying.

Let’s say, for your argument’s sake, that you read 100 thousand angry posts.
How does 100.000 represent 7.000.000 ?

Forums are NEVER a good source of information for videogame satisfaction, people don’t go to a forum to talk about how great stuff is.

That’s why companies use other metrics to know what their playerbase likes.

not all 7m accounts are active

We have no other number to go on.
Even if we say the game has less players than b4 it was f2p (3 million) the “tons” of forum complaints would still lack numbers.
Simply put there is no way for us to know how many people like/dislike content, customers speak with their time and wallets and that’s what Anet responds to, not a bunch of forum complaints.

So Anet doesn’t listen to forum complaints? May I ask why you bother to come post anything then? What is the point of this massive forum at all? Do they not read bug reports either? Why do dev’s bother to post on the forums? Why are there 60k views and over 2500 posts on Elite Specializations & Hero Point Feedback [Merged]?

BUT we are getting immediate access to elite specializations! Only not to maxed out ones. Just don´t see where the problem is with needing some time to maxing it out. That´s just part of the progression plan and I believe it is working as intended.

We’re getting immediate access to half complete elites and then only if you’ve full explored before release.

Thank you Anet for breaking an otherwise good game for the smaller guilds.
Expansion means making a game larger and better, not more limiting and removing features we already had…

Maybe you should “expand” your circle of game buddies, instead of limiting yourself to playing with one friend or just by yourself.

Most everybody likes to play solo at some point, but the whole design of guilds is to play with other people. A guild of one is like a basketball team with only one person on it, it’s missing the point.

So your ok with 3 man guilds but 1 or 2 makes you a loser in some way? If a party of 2 or w/e size wants a special place of their own who am I to tell them “get more friends=get a life”

I’m pretty sure map completion is going to take the same amount of time with or without the elite spec.

The people who complain about running out of content are completionists, and they got an amazing treadmill to use. Why is there something wrong with doing the content with the new elite spec? The people who want to do it all are going to to it anyways.

Everyone else is just forced into a crappy situation. I don’t understand why people are supporting this. Using the same logic as people supporting the gated content, WvW maps should be required for map completion, again. I mean if you want to get your reward, you need to camp WvW to capture that keep now, and work for it, right?

It’s pointless and stupid to gate the elite specs like this. Everything else is whatever (though the HP champions need a tone down baseline for solo play and way better scaling to make group training way more punishing while also rewarding and promoting smaller group adventures with close friends.

Because the people who say the rest of us are just crying, whining are actually nervous about any time gate being taken away. They’re afraid if anet caves on elites it means they’ll get rid of every grind. They see this argument as some sort of sign that the grind fest they love will eventually be destroyed, and as such are not willing to compromise at all on this one issue.

Personally I only logged on just to give ANet a thx because I appreciate what they’ve created.

You should definitely get it, for the Story alone.

These are his words from b4 expansion release

Wait till HoT releases, wait for feedback about the release and then (assuming you still want to buy it) wait till the bugs are not so game breaking (which they will be, given the current state and one month to go).

After all of that then buy HoT, that’s the best thing to do at this point.

I see a site called cdkeys.com with the HoT expansion standard for $35. Says they deliver a key. Another site had a similar low price, but the fine print says “European Version Only”. Are these some sort of scam, or legit? G searches also show deluxe version for $75. Also, I don’t see that they say I need to wait 72 hours on a credit card purchase like ANet does.

I’m on pause here thinking about whether I want to purchase to just run a Reverent Alt. I was never psyched about the diefest that I got into with the last two areas they opened up, even with Exotic crafted gear. Both DT and SW seemed like you had to be in a zerg to have any fun, or just stay alive, like I’m saying, with Exotic gear. Anyway, I’m saying that I might spend $35 to Alt some Revs in the other areas, but so far the new content seems less and less interesting.

Thoughts on scams and content?

Just remove the elite gating already. Make it baseline at lvl 80 and get over with obviously fail ideas, before more people progress it.

no doubt. gating such a core aspect of the game that effects everyone was a terrible idea, just get rid of it for the elites. Those who want huge grinds can still have mastery’s, legendary ‘s, achievements, pretty armor, the list goes on and on. We just want to play through Hot content with our new specs. I don’t think that’s asking too much.

For people who keep claiming that others want everything given to them, I hope I can put that one response to bed:

I am fine working and waiting for ascended gear.
I am fine working and waiting for skins.
I am fine working and waiting for a title.
I am fine working and waiting for masteries.
I am fine working and waiting to unlock playable content (ex: fractals).

I’m fine working and waiting for basically anything except:
Traits and skills, i.e., builds
exotic gear.

I don’t want everything, most people posting agree with the above, so please stop with the we want everything handed to us crap, we don’t.

People have a specific request: Let us unlock and play with the elite specs and go through the expac with that spec. It’s not asking everything, it’s asking for that one thing only.

I actually don’t want everything handed to me, in fact I want the opposite: I’d like to progress and work towards many different goals, at my own pace, using the build I want.

If they would just make elite specs a 60 hp unlock like the rest 99% of the qq about HoT would be gone instantly. It is all people are asking for, and it’s very reasonable.

Unfortunately you’re dealing with people who simply can’t process the hero elite problem as anything other than a total cave if anet changes it and by extension the end of the world as we know it. Fortunately the vast majority wants it changed so anet will change it.

For those people who are making up their own little fictions about this thread rather than read what’s been written, or who were commenting on threads that have been merged into this one:

Nobody is asking for anything on a plate

If eSpecs were unlocked with regular exp, there would be no issue.

People do not want to take incomplete characters into a zone that is harder than other 80 zones in the game. Which is why the partial unlock which then requires HoT zones to complete is unwelcome. The same is almost certainly true of WvW players, although at least there they can acquire the HPs through “levelling” albeit at a glacially slow pace.

At the moment I’m enjoying myself, taking a character I don’t want to eSpec into the jungle to explore and open up the masteries so that, in the event that ANet don’t make the requirements for eSpecs more reasonable, I can at least get the soloable hero challenges on other characters without any content blocks.

There have been a great many suggestions for resolving this issue, just read back and you’ll find a bunch of them. So before you tell us to “kitten off” or accuse us of being unreasonable, maybe actually read a few of the posts first eh? As in, read the words that have been written rather than what you think has been written.

Frankly I find the level of hostility from some members of the community disappointing, and entirely unwarranted.

There are at this point 2 very different views on the time it should take for elite unlocks, and players in both sets who are taking the time to post are pretty passionate about it right now. At this point the majority just wants to play their elites through the Hot content, not after they complete it. The minority wants it to take a looooonnnng time and is afraid if anet decreases elite aquire time they’ll just give up and give us everything right now.

What I Really Don't Get About You People

The vast majority of people on this topic are saying the same thing. We expected to be able to play the much touted elites within a reasonable time after release, and for that majority the 16,18,40 hrs or w/e it takes is just ridiculous.

The majority feels that mastery’s themselves are ok, but that locking them to elite’s is not.

The majority feels that personal elites should not be tied into group success scenarios.

The majority feels they should not have to play through most of the new HoT pve zones just to play how they want to play. That by doing so a grind mentality happens and the areas themselves become that, instead of adventures.

The majority feels that the wvw grind isn’t all that much better, because people want to be fighting using their new abilities and not mindlessly running in swarms just for the sake of a nuisance gate.

The majority with many alts are worried about the hundreds of additional hours of “gameplay” necessary to run around with specs they’re tired of simply to play the way they want to play

The majority feels they were promised new exiting roles to try and only upon entering HoT have they realized that their elites will be crippled to the tune of many many hours (which for many working people accounts for days and weeks of not being able to use their new spec) x any alt they have or may wish to create in the future and that this particular hero point system becomes a grind for fun.

The minority wishes for everything to take a long time to complete, and believes time itself gives satisfaction in all areas of the game.

The minority is afraid that if Anet caves on the elite grind they may do so in other areas of the game, no matter how many times the majority tells the minority this is not a global time involvement complaint, but simply restricted to elite hero point grind.

This is definitely a hot button issue right now and one that has attracted many people to voice their opinions so anet will, and I hope soon, address it with more than just snarky remark towards people who just bought their game.

Oh they do. Should check out the main topic under heart of thorns discussion .

At this point I think the moderator is just having a hard time keeping up with all the new topics that are really the same topic. Hero point system for elites is not fun.

This is definitely a hot button issue right now and one that has attracted many people to voice their opinions.

Also Ty Gaile, for coming back on this topic and saying what you did about monitoring the concern for not an extraordinary amount of time before perhaps making some adjustments. Also ty for saying that it wasn’t your desire to diminish the concerns of people.

what ruins it is that the majority of those hero points are locked behind the mastery system, which is designed to be a long term system.

40 accessible hero challenges would be fine, locking them behind mind-numbing mastery grind walls isn’t fine.

This is the main problem. I started with 100 points, so 300 to go. The mastery system is taking FOREVER and it just feels like a completely boring grind.

The mastery system as only been available for 15 hours. Your complaining about it being forever is just pure over dramatization. Congratulations on being awarded the William Shatner award for dramatic excellence.

The original poster was complaining that the hero points needed to unlock elites took far too long because in its current form it’s tied in with mastery and that you basically need to run around all the new HoT content while still using old specs. The mastery system is just fine and yes you need things to shoot for, but unlocking elites was not discussed in advance as requiring very long times to access and Gaile gray’s post implies people who have a problem with long grind for their basic elite skills and traits are in some way just silly.

First, thank you for saying, in your first sentence, my very thoughts: “It’s been less than 16 hours, and that’s ’forever?” Secondly, thanks for a smile. I’d love to see the statue that goes with that award.

Wow. so basically the official word is that the many many pages of people who are complaining about this should just shut up? Also confirming that people who have played for 16 hrs still shouldn’t have their elites unlocked? Well that just kittens me off.

First of all sorry for my bad english. I am still learning (the spanish forums are very inactive).

Please Anet, reduce the hp for the elite spect….. I leveled my guardian and necro to 80 only to unlock the elite spect and I only have about 30-40 hp… after spent almost of them in the rest spects.

I have Hot but I can not play with the Dragon Hunter and the Reaper …. and this was my main reason to purchase this expansion.

As many players have said above…. this is very frustating.

Your English is better than many who were born speaking the language.

Disappointed and aggravated with the design decisions on progression here, for multiple reasons.

Putting all traits and skills in the single line not only continues the annoying “hey we’re simplifying it” trend, but also reeks of “how can we make them play this game longer so we can squeeze more money out of them.”

I was already hooked and enjoying WvW and looking forward to elites (gj, marketing team). These design decisions actually prompt me to wish for something else to play, after being let down.

I’ll continue to WvW, and maybe I’ll eventually unlock an elite, but really I’m just waiting for another game now.

What money are they squeezing out of you? They already got your money. You’re not paying a subscription or anything. Making things take longer doesn’t accomplish anything more than giving us more to do.

Do get it. I actually do agree after seeing the complete process in action. I would prefer to be able to unlock what I want, instead of having them merged together. I’d like more control over my experience. I would like a way to not have to work my way through the game playing one version of the class in order to eventually play a different version (only relevant to me for the Herald, but still true.)

I just don’t understand why this is such a majorly crushing thing for everyone. Maybe it’s because I main a Ranger and I don’t like anything about Druid and never have, so I will continue playing my Ranger just the way it is. Still, I would like to think that people enjoy the classes they’ve been playing up to this point. I would like to think that continuing to play the characters they like a little longer isn’t such a devastating thing.

Just dropped by the Forums to say how dissappointed and sad I am…

You get that addon… you wait for the elite spec.. and BAM 400 hero point wall in your face…

any possibility to go back in time and stop myself von ever investing time and money in here? that design decission just kittens up sooo bad…

kitten it A-Net… Sorry but not gonna play that grindwars 2 anymore…

Did you seriously drop $40-100 for nothing more than an elite spec? I mean, that really seems kind of excessive.

Was no one excited for the game itself?

People are simply ready to try new abilities after having played there current builds for years.

I was so exited to play HoT at the moment of release last night. A few hours into it when I realized I wouldn’t even be able to get elites for god know how long I finally just quit out of frustration. After yrs of playing with old specs now here I am in new expansion with much touted elite specs and I’m kitten blocked

Now I feel forced to do wvw which I never do and don’t really enjoy just because at least there it can be done on an understandable progression path.

After a couple hours playing Hot I still haven’t found one hero point. I can of course see them on map and to their credit anet has given an above or below indicator but It’s a pain, and I don’t know if I can’t reach them because there’s mastery’s I need to unlock or some hidden nook to get into.

I mention my trouble because I assume I’m not the only person finding this system troublesome. On this toon I have full explore and didn’t think 200 points at 10 points a pop would be a biggie.

The trouble I’m having also makes me think of people who are instant leveling toons, only to find out that 400 points without online guides may just be a nuisance and not a fun way to simply get access to new abilities.

So I’m in the new expansion and playing my old spekittenil who knows when……

Luck Sink past 300%

Would love to see a luck sink introduced in game at 300% for all the excess salvage luck acquired that as far as I can tell is completely useless past that point.

Until then I’ll just save all the luck on a storage toon, like I did with the plethora of ascended gear items I’ve received over the past couple yrs that I felt too bad about destroying and magically a couple yrs later is actually meaningful coming up in HoT.

If this topic interests you please contribute some Ideas about possible sinks for luck going forward.

You still do not have to wear ascended armor or craft a legendary to participate in new end-game content. No one is “forcing” players to do something they do not want. All of the new collectibles are unnecessary and fully optional.

I agree with you somewhat , but try getting into raids with exotic gear. Also if you want to be as good as your individual skill allows in wvw then exotics are not for you.

I don’t have a problem running around and grabbing hero points, but I like pve so it’s not a big deal for me, especially since it won’t take very long to get what I need so I don’t consider it grindy: but I can also See it from the point of view of someone who hates pve and doesn’t want to spend any time doing it.

plz change it so that players that have blocked you cant talk too you either

It’s a freedom of speech thing. It’s total autonomy on the part of each individual to decide whether they want to speak to the other.

Freedom of Speech has absolutely nothing to do with this situation. It protects your speech from the government, no one else.

I think in this context the individual was talking about the freedom to choose whether or not to allow this person to speak to them – which is definitely within their ability to decide with the block tool.

merchant yes. The market is so flooded that in most cases vendor gives more simply bc of tp costs, and the ones that might yield a few copper profit are still not worth posting just because the seconds you spend doing that you could be making real money.

Compass Event Prioritization Sucks

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: leftyboy.9358

leftyboy.9358

If I’m trying to complete an area of the map in my case the Fields of Ruin, I do not need my compass to only show the events that are taking place in the area. I need it to show me where to go to uncover an unexplored area and find the singular hero point that I need to finish the area. It is infuriating when your only purpose for being in an area is to complete it, and you are being directed towards a community event that will be repeated again in a half hour that means nothing to you personally. The compass should not be prioritizing infinitely repeating community events until finite goals like completely exploring the area have been completed, this game isn’t pay to play, you do not need to waste your customers time in such a way.

So you’re looking for additional functionality that is more specific to what your current in games objectives are. Wow had an addon called tom tom that when combined with other addons could be very specific to current needs.

For better or worse, ANET doesn’t believe in addon’s, for a number of reasons. The reason that might interest you is that something like that is ingrained in the programming (since they don’t allow 3rd party addons) and the game becomes bloatware for alot of people who don’t have computer’s that can handle the load.

gw2 design path integrates alot of internet searches and social interaction to figure out nooks and crannies of the game.
