I go with condition damage already. Tons and tons of conditions, I love it >:D Actually I think the Power line is pretty boring.

But even the conditions + condition damage is not doing the job once I’m all alone playing in Bloodtide coast.

I know I must be doing something wrong, but WHAT? I’ve spend days and days tweaking things, trying to change how I play, …

Oh. I’m not worried about variety, engineer has plenty of that. I just want to be powerful; I started struggling around Bloodtide Coast, wasn’t strong enough to kill anything https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/Engineer-need-help-with-Bloodtide-Coast/first#post32869

So I want a profession that’s strong/powerful enough to solo stuff in the more difficult areas.

I don’t want to run grenades for the rest of my gw2 life.

The last picture will probably be the armor I wear when I’m lv 80 and done upgrading armor every level. Once I find a black dye of-course.

I wanted the “human thief profession screen” armor, but these Norn women have no hips whatsoever, why bother. Really, Norn women have no hips, my god!, they’re no Norn in my book!

You said to use racial skills, did you mean it’s necessary for solo Pve as engineer? You’re saying I should really roll another race, since norn has no good toolbelt skills, if I want to be effective in solo pve as engineer?

So what is a class that’s powerful?

I came to engineer because Guardian was a tank class (hold points, too defensive oriented, good support and control, but poor damage), and now I’m finding out engineer is another tanky class. Wasted my time leveling a class-type I was trying to avoid at all costs.

I play mostly PvE, could you suggest a powerful class there?
I love Mesmer in PvP but I don’t want to deal with clones and random effects in PvE.
What’s the most damage oriented, and least buggy, class for PvE?

Or tips to make engineer more powerful when solo in PvE (Lv 65+ areas).
I’ve tweaked so much with my skills, my traits, … everything… but it’s still very difficult. No problem staying alive, but a problem killing stuff.

Guess I could use grenades/grenadier but they’re so loud and flashy they make me tired after playing 5 minutes.

80 guardian. . . should I reroll engi?

in Engineer

lorazcyk.8927

The professions I wanted to play were guardian and mesmer, but I instead chose engineer because of: no real ranged weapon on guardian, weak against champions, veterans, and world bosses,… didn’t like randomness of mesmer, clones (not phantasms) weak until later on when you can trait ‘on death’… (this is all just my opinion, I don’t want to discuss it as not to derail the thread)

1) Solo ability. Can I run around a comfortably solo zones

In my experience, no. Not easily, at least. You’ll be praying for a stronger player to come by. Because let me tell you, if a guardian or another engineer shows up, the fight will still be though.
(Note, I’m not talking against 1 or 2 trash enemies, but bigger groups like the risen)

I did fine solo or with one other player (mostly mesmer), until lv 55 or so, when I went to Bloodtide Coast and suddenly starting playing against the Risen… alone… couldn’t do it! Spend days and days messing with traits, skills, weapons, upgrades… now I’m Lv 66 and still feel very weak soloing Bloodtide coast.

This helps http://gw2skills.net/editor/en/?fcMQFAUlIqKen1y2FTOJSIFSohB6BghX3loC63nCsFA;TsA5USpURpgiiGDNCasV5qSW1IAA but only so much.

(You need to copy-paste the link, gw2 forum messes up the link if you click it)

2) How do engineers contribute to dungeons?

Engineer is awesome support in dungeons! Today I played this elixir build in sorrow’s furnace http://gw2skills.net/editor/en/?fcMQJAqelspCYnwy2F1LA;TgAKYMKJUyCjDGJMjAmIA and pretty much kept everyone alive, and they could always recover from Downed state even if I couldn’t come close to them to revive. Nearly any group-oriented skills I bring to dungeons as engineer do very well, even considering some people (>_>) will go glass cannon.

See my comments on WvW below to see more ways I support.

3) How much fun

Even if I feel weak as engineer, I always have a lot of fun in PvE.
In WvW, I love all the mobility I have. Slick shoes! People never expect the knockdown. When defending forts I mostly support. A warrior can be brave because I’ll support him. I can throw him elixirs, or make him a light combo field to remove conditions, I can pick apart enemies and set them up so it’s safe for him to attack.

If you really enjoy support you’ll probably like the Engineer. If you want more damage, try something else (assuming you mostly play solo-ish PvE/WvW)

4) race

Human have elite skills that complement the engineer very well. Asura too. And Charr! You should go Charr if you want to look cool. Don’t go Norn like me!

Currently I’m looking for a more damage profession, but will keep engineer for the fun and the support (feel free to send me a personal message if you can help)
The engineer really fits me like a glove, I really feel like it’s me fighting and not just a character on my screen. I just wish it were a bit stronger in solo PvE.

Jack of all trades, master of none

I disagree with that. I’d say we’re pretty strong with support and control! We have great mobility as well.

I agree with wolf, I’d thought of this and think that one effect should be guaranteed, and one random, even if potency has to be reduced.

Btw, for those who don’t know: RGN is random number generator, used to pick which random effect will activate.

Very funny that you will force money to be taken from Bank if we don’t have sufficient money to use a Waypoint.

But you won’t take money in other convenient situations, like needing more money to buy something on trading post, or repair armor when in explorable areas.

It would be great to have the money taken from our Bank in situations like these, if we ran out of money in the inventory.

For those who don’t know, when you don’t have enough money in inventory for a Waypoint, you will get a pop-up saying:

You don’t have sufficient funds for the Waypoint. The rest will be taken from your account Bank.

Either way it would be free, but it would reduce bandwidth on servers (loading + teleporting requests; loading players and all that stuff)

Combos, who did what ie. whose talents get applied?

Healing Rain
Call down a healing rain on the target area, granting regeneration to allies and curing conditions once every three seconds.

Cleansing Water
Remove a condition when granting regeneration to yourself or an ally.

Healing Rain pulses regeneration four times. Cleansing Water will remove conditions each four times, on you, or on the ally in the healing rain.,

However:
Cinnamon is asking about combos, specifically.
So you have a Water field. And s/he’s asking if a player who does a projectile finisher on the water field (thus receiving regeneration) will have conditions removed.

Answer:
No, cinnamon didn’t give the ally regeneration, Healing Rain didn’t give the player regeneration. The water combo field did. When CinnamonFox puts a field down, it doesn’t belong to her/him anymore. It belongs to the world.

@Ojimaru:
They do benefit, but only from the person doing the combo finisher, not the person who did the combo field.

Say I have sigil of smoldering on (+10% burning) on my weapon, and I cast a fire field. And you don’t have the sigil. When you apply burning with a projectile, it won’t use my 10% burning.

I noticed that whenever I was almost due to buy the next training book, I started feeling desperate that Engineer was boring/weak/“aah I want to roll another profession!”, and when I bought the new training book the feeling would go away.

I wonder if it’s because the game difficulty is not on par with when you get new traits, or if it’s just novelty.

The engineer is a half-hearted ranger.

But I disagree with you, engineer is nothing at all like the ranger. They’re miles and miles apart.
If you wanted to compare something with ranger, it would be thief. So you’re saying engineer and thief are about the same too?

Take it easy, learn one thing at a time. There’s too much to learn and you will become overwhelmed if you want to know everything at once.
You don’t have to worry about kits or mortars right now.

Use your pistol skills, and your healing skill, and try to understand what they do.

Walk around. Talk to NPCs. Do some quests. Kill monsters. As you play, the game will tell you what to do, if you look at the top-right of the screen.

That’s it.

I posted a question here on the forums asking for help with my engineer, because even though I was entirely specced for damage, I could barely kill anything. No, I hadn’t tried bomb kit or grenade kit because I hate all the stupid noisy explosions.

A couple days ago I asked in game, and a person helped me. We were testing skills and fighting for hours. So I learned a ton of things. For example:

  • Flamethrower: the first attack is not just “one attack”, it’s 10 attacks in one. So if you build your traits for precision and all the conditions, it’s going to be very strong. Even better if you use the skill for Quickness on a though boss. Fury helps, for extra critical chance. If you have Utility Goggles you get fury, and also 10 stacks of vulnerability to start off the fight.
  • Bombs: Not so bad if you pay attention to the combos. Engineer has a lot of blast combo finishers you can use with the two combo fields (2 and 4)

Personally I love the Wrench tool kit, so I wish I can make it more useful (though 5 is hopeless). So I’m going to try these new things I learned with it, and see how I do!

I actually really like the grenate kit, I just wish I could turn off the sound AND animation for them. They’re too strong and make me feel tired after a while.

If you find more things to make the engineer stronger, please post here so we can all learn

(edit: specified “blast combo finishers”)

  • Make rifle 5 and 6 not so stupid. I honestly don’t get it. It’s so slow and you can’t fight while using them. In fact, using those 2 skills is having a death wish! So in effect you only have 3 attack skills on the rifle.
  • Let “swap weapons” go to the last kit used. It’s so slow to switch kits to use a skill or two mid-combat, because I have to fumble searching for the key to activate the kit.
  • Reduced cooldown on turrets if you go to pick them up.
  • Since our elites are so boring, let us equip a utility skill there. Just kidding, just kidding! Or am I?

I’m only Lv 58. How can you be Lv 80 and have beaten the game? My guess is that you rushed through content. Did you explore every nook and cranny, checked behind that mountain and found that cave, did you stumble upon mini-dungeons throughout the world, did you help a player who seems to have trouble, and formed a new friendship?

My guess is you haven’t. So you haven’t really enjoyed the game. Make a new character, and this time, take your time, instead of rushing to the end and then complaining there’s nothing to do.

It’s like someone making you a feast fit for a King, you scarf it down in 2 minutes, then complain it was boring. Of-course it was boring, but that’s your fault, you didn’t take the time to taste it.

So I joined some other people (as party) doing some quests in that place, we had lots and lots of difficulty… we (4) were from Lv 44 to Lv 55.

I’m playing an Engineer and everything has been smooth sailing until now. I’ve played zones well above my level, 2-3 person team WvWvW, and dungeons as soon as I got to Lv 30.

Now I’m Lv 54 and just got to Bloodtide Coast for the first time, coming from Lion’s Arch. It’s a Lv 45-55 area.

I go directly east and trigger the Alpha Drake quest. I fight it for nearly 10 minutes and only get him to 50% health. Sometimes he goes back to full health! A ranger shows up, and we kill the drake super fast. Amazing!

I go directly east, and do the ghostly pirate Lionguard quest. I’m alone again, and it’s very difficult. Not so much that I’m dying, I’m not, I’m kitting for minutes on end and barely killing anything. Finally after a very very long time, I kill most of them and a champion ghostly pirate shows up. I fight it for another very very long time and thankfully another player shows up. Oh no, how sad, it’s a guardian. It takes us a very very long time to kill the ghostly pirate.

Please help me out. What am I doing wrong? I’ve tried to understand how to improve but I just don’t see what to do. I’ve tried many different build, different trait set-ups…

Right now most of my gear is Precision and Condition Damage (since I’m using the pistols). I have Flamethrower which I swap to just to use Knockback and Blind as needed, and for the burning tool-belt skill. I have Slick Shoes to knockdown enemies as I kite, and Elixir B because… well… because Elixir B is always useful :-)

I bought strong weapons and armor from Trading Post (very pricey).
