Hoelbrak is the longest because you need to run around.

Ratasum is the easiest because it’s such a small area and waypoints are everywhere.

Yeah, Rata Sum is nice and compact.

Personally, I’m very happy to give up cheap access to sub 80 transmutes in exchange for being able to convert my giant stockpile of useless stones into transmute charges. If the new system rewards a charge for map completion I’ll be even happier.

Sub 80 is a temporary status. It sucks a bit that it will cost more to transmute while leveling, but the benefits more than make up for it, IMO.

I just took it to mean that throwing 4 GS in did not mean GS out or something like that.

I wouldn’t be opposed to that, as it would improve the sale price of a LOT of rare items that are currently ignored by the forgers. Of course, the forgers would mind. A lot.

That’s why I don’t think that’s what is going to happen.

Thanks for the quick answer but how does it relate to glob salvage, as that uses the mystic one no?

You always have time to reconsider, its up again today

You’re going to want to use a Master or better on rare/exotic items to get the glob of ectoplasm, but if you want to salvage the glob of ectoplasm for luck, you can use a low tier kit.

Thanks for the head’s up, I haven’t checked out today’s item so I’ll definitely get online tonight to pick it up!

Some examples :
Farming Skelks / Arctodus in Frostgorge for T6 Blood,Claws and Fangs
Farming Sharks on Southsun Cove for T6 Scales (never did that personally)

Gathering Iron was very good the last 5 weeks, however the prices are now down again.

Gathering T3 wood and Herbs in Dredgehaunt Cliffs was very good for over 6 months before the Ascended Armor patch.

Generally some Living World Patches have often increased the need of some mats so that they increased in price and made gathering them worth it for a while.

Also it helps to have a lot of alts for gathering, so you can find a spot where you can gather much in a short time, and switch trough your alts until respawn. Use of guesting also helps a lot

Personally i only did Champtrains because of the Bloodstone, since i only play in the open World, and thats my only way to get Bloodstone.

All good suggestions Beldin, but he did ask for methods that do not include the TP. For any of your suggestions to work, you’d have to sell your product on the TP…

It’s not that the gold drops were the biggest part of the reward, but it was A part fo the reward. If it was so inconcequential then why even bother removing it? They are removing it to specifically reduce the amount of coin entering the world, so it can’t have been completely inconsequential. If they reduce the coin from an event by 1s by throw in an extra green item, then fair enough, I can deal with that, but the announcement ONLY said that they are reducing the reward, not that they are increasing it elsewhere.

It’s basically a passive flow of coin into the game that requires no effort (unless you count selecting the correct WP as effort). If you wanted coins, you’d be doing something else, so nerfing the coin drops isn’t going to impact people who are farming coins but rather people who weren’t farming coins but still getting them anyway.

They are pulling out a gold sink, so they are off-setting it with a reduction in passive inflation-generating coin flow.

You also asked for alternative gold farming methods. I assume you mean activities that insert gold into the game (i.e. not drops that you sell to players on the TP), correct?

In that case, here are a few (in no particular order):
Killing mobs
Dungeon Rewards
WvW kills
Achievements
Selling materials, junk, and gear to vendors
Jumping Puzzles
Events (getting nerfed)
Map completion
Various bags
Daily/Monthly chest

Elaborate? lol. Selfless potion a 10g (crazy for gw2 standards) per person (that bought it) sink is big. And i only saw it with scarlet.

Scared John nerfed events and champ bags to OFFSET repair change. I say, screw nerfs. Nerf nothing. But repeat the 10g (and alike) sinks. and remove repair bills.

No repair bill + 10g sinks (selfless potion) = win
No repair bill + Loot nerf = loose (I have 2k deaths, means thus 32g , that’s nothing compared to event money that slowly builded up).

Remember jonh, effort gotta be rewarded. Farming 200 events (pretty hardcore for a day) still will only yield 2-4g. Why nerf that? Dungeon runners get more in less time. You saying ‘events are fun but since this is a grind game, i want you to stop farming events and rather to back to dungeon speedclears?’.

Sorry for the negativity but this does nothing for me but annoy me. Less gold + same convenience (you still must go to repair npc). Loose + status quo = bad business. All I feel is the push to buy a discount account and use it for reselling. You know of what i’m speaking John. Is that how you want me to earn my legendaries? Cause sure feels that way… Resellers gonna be even more king of the game, with events ( a casual happening, that can’t be chained for abuse) being nerfs rewards into the ground.

The biggest problem with one-off gold sinks is that they are one-off gold sinks. What percent of the population do you think purchased a selfish/selfless potion? Compare that to the percent of players who pay for repairs (that one is known… it’s 100% of players). With repairs, the amount of gold going out of the economy is very easy to predict whereas the amount of gold sunk with a one-off item could vary to extreme amounts.

When you pull out a gold sink that all players are using, you need to also cap off a gold flow of equal size. The champ bag gold is not a lot per hour, but after the nerf it would appear it will be of equal size to the lost sink.

Unless you spend most of your time farming champions for gold (which, honestly, is probably the worst way you could spend your time other than black lion chest key farming in terms of gold per hour), this change is a complete wash for you.

Not that the removal of re-traiting and repair costs should have that much of an impact, but it got me thinking a bit about gold sinks. In short, what are the largest remaining gold sinks in the game? Waypoint costs? Ascended Crafting? Gems? Just curious where the largest ones are.

Trading Post fees.

By a HUGE margin.

Yeah, can’t believe I forgot about that or a moment. You think TP fees are big enough that they trump all other sinks?

Yes. Millions of transactions occur every single day, each one draining 15% of the item price from the gold supply.

Johns first mistakes in this patch. I knew it had to come. It probably isn’t even for convenience, but jsut to nerf the gold existing in the market.

My personal economy lesson for John. Undue the repair change. Continu with scarlet alike npc’s. Currency + gold to get something. Selfless potion is like what, 500 armor repairs? Repeat these, and you will have more sink then the not so clever repair cost overhaul.

How is removing a gold sink going to decrease the gold existing in the market?

I see it ending up in a similar place to Silver Doubloons.

Won’t happen.

Silver doubloons are based entirely on luck, within a small window of attainment. Character level 22 (or whatever level it is) jumping puzzle rewards, and 5% chance when forging pebbles + lump. Too much effort and luck with no normal way to get the item, results in a high price.

You forget lootbags. last night i got buy orders for lootbags worth 15g filled and got 16 silver doubloons from them. With selling all the other stuff, i made more 25g profit….

Unidentified dyes? Anyone that wants Bifrost, now or later, is already saving dyes, or will save patch day dyes. Unidentified dyes can also be obtained by laurels (10 dyes for 5 laurels).

Since laurels are attainable by every single player, every single day, every single month, this easily accessed method will keep the price down, as well as be the logical choice for gift of colour if the price of dyes are artificially raised by horders (38-41 laurels per month, depending on the month, not including achievement rewards).

Laurels are time gated though, so there will be people willing to pay for instant access to the unidentified dyes. How many people and how willing they are to pay remains to be seen.

Only time will tell, but I didn’t discount laurels in my prediction.

To go along with this the supply may be increased even more by these people who are selling their stock in order to cut their loses and free up storage space rather than save it for the long haul.

Full disclosure: I intend on buying a few stacks of Unidentified Dye on patch day, because I anticipate it being incredibly inexpensive and because I predict that it will eventually rise to 1 gold each once the excess supply works it way out of the market (since the creation rate post patch is going to be very low).

And this is a problem because?

If you can’t see a problem I’m not gonna bother trying to explain, even because by your attitude you’ve likely done it yourself and you’re expecting a profit on patch day.

It isn’t really a problem though. There is a finite limit on the number of unidentified dyes you can create, and the creation of unidentified dyes is coming from colors for which there was no demand (thus the cheap price of them). What’s really happening is that old dye with no value to anyone is being removed from the market and turned into gamble attempts. It is no different from tossing them into the Mystic Forge right now.

Plus there weren’t that many dyes available for sub 10s, so while the first guy to buy some dye may wind up making 10-15s each on them, that makes two assumptions:
1. There will be enough buyers on patch day for unidentified dye for them to sell them all.
2. The price of unidentified dye will be high enough to turn a profit.

I predict that both assumptions will be wrong, and people who are trying to speculate on Unidentified Dye on patch day are going to take heavy losses.

There’s also only one scenario in which you’re assumptions work as well. That at the majority of money coming into the gem store is from players willing to spend for every time they want to change their look.

None of us know the internal figures at Anet, in fact, Anet probably can’t know themselves if their current transmutation sales are for either type of customer, or even if there are customers not willing to pay for the old system.

So, two assumptions, you just claim you’re right, so do we. But on our side is the fact what we propose gives a lot of incentive and satisfaction to customers.

Nor is it as “easy come” system that will lack satifaction in the long term. Getting the skins is the same as always. All Anet is adding is a barrier to want to expand your skins collection, which is the whole point of the wardrobe. If it still costs me the same gems as the old system, Anet isn’t really going to get many more sales out of that. The high spenders probably already made multiple transmuted sets and why spend money to just shuffle those around?

Unless ArenaNet has done something horrifically wrong with their pricing model, my assumption is correct. There is a reason almost every game has a cash shop now, publishers found that microtransactions in which a few players pay a lot and most player pay little to nothing winds up generating many times more revenue than a subscription system where everyone pays the same and has access to everything.

ArenaNet isn’t changing the system, they are just making it easier to use, so there really is no gamble on their part with respect to losing sales. They aren’t changing the model because they know how profitable the current model is and their projections indicate that the alternative is not as good.

mtpelion.4562

mtpelion: I think you are severly underestimating the value of customer loyalty and satisfaction. Making the system “pay to unlock” and not “pay to change” would make a lot of players really happy, and more likely to buy IN GENERAL from the gemstore in the future, simply because they like to support the company. I know that if I see something awesome that I’d like to buy, and can afford, but I am irked at the company that produces it for some reason or another, I am less likely to go through with the purchase, and I think a lot of people are the same way.

Yes, you’d make the people who don’t normally buy anything more likely to buy, but you’d lose millions upon millions of transactions from the people who currently buy all the time because they would only have to buy once.

Making lots of people buy something once is a LOT less profitable than making a few people buy often, unless you charge a hefty premium, which then leads to less people buying once putting you right back at square one.

Unidentified dyes will collapse on patch day and will stay low for a while. They will slowly rise though as the supply gets used since the creation rate will most likely be less than the usage rate.

Depending on the rate of creation, I can definitely see them eventually reaching 1g each.

i disagree with you, anet knew they werent getting people to change gears as much as they want, thats partially why they made this change, the difference is they figured it was mostly due to the item destruction factor that was getting in the way of dress up. But this was only one facet.
I contend that the major barrier is iretreiveable costs associated with swapping looks. one part of that cost was item destruction the other part of that cost was transmutation fees. For many of the items that exist in the game, transmutation fees is currently higher on the list of costs. (every gear from 1-79)

The model they are proposing doesnt exist anywhere and succeed unless the fees are minimal.
even rentals irl, charge per day the current system charges per change, which means change is little as often is encouraged behavior.

The people who change all the time, probably dont change back very much, they would still get the same money off them. see, they only lose money on players who go back to old looks, which under the old system was probably so rare as not to exist. Under the new system it will be similarly as rare, at the same time discouraging people to even try.

If you are the person who makes t shirt designs, you dont want to charge people for changing designs, it means you only get paid when you come out with a better design. If you charge for buying a design, you get people buying 5 and 6 and 7 designs where before they would buy one, and they still will buy when cooler item comes out. Its just not a good model for the business, or the user.

I know you disagree, but I think you are severely underestimating the number of people who change their look all the time… and yes, that includes changing back.

The Sims is the best selling game series of all time primarily because there are people who LOVE changing things. EA figured out how to monetize that, and so has ArenaNet.

mtpelion.4562

I think the main reason that some people here are suggesting that ArenaNet is doing it “wrong” believe that because they are only looking at the system based on how they themselves currently use it, not on how the rest of the playerbase is using it.

For example, a few people challenged my post above and claimed that sales would increase by switching to a pay once system, however, there is only one scenario in which that would be the case and that would be if all players picked out a look a single time and never really changed it. That’s the way I play, and that’s probably the way they play as well, but it is not the way EVERYONE plays, and that is why they are wrong. The system proposed by ArenaNet will maximize profits because while there are players who pick a skin and stick with it, ArenaNet does not make money from those players, they make money from the players who change their looks ALL THE TIME. If those players get to pay once and have unlimited changes, or even pay once per skin, the volume of transactions will decline significantly (I don’t have any figures, but I would estimate in the range of an 80%+ decrease in revenue from transmutations).

To make up for that lost revenue, they would have to significantly increase the price of transmutations.

ArenaNet is making the business decision that maximizes sales, because by doing it on an individual transmutation basis, they can get money from both the one and done crowd (me) and the fashionistas who just have to have the new thing.

The biggest problem with going to a one time pay unlimited use skin system is that the sales volume would be many times smaller, so the cost per transaction would have to go up, which would then lead to a further decrease in sales volume. You’d wind up having to pay $50+ for each unlimited skin unlock in order to make up for the lost sales that ArenaNet would have made on individual charges.

That said, I think they may want to consider adding a premium Transmutation service, in which an account can pay a one time $200-300 fee and would then have unlimited unlocks, to satisfy the people who don’t want to use the system as is.

Considering that there were less than 1k pastel pink dyes on the tp, i would definately have bought them up (or any other common dye with less than 1000 supply). Considering it costs over 50s to craft a common red dye, i would have bought up everything to 50s.

Yeah, this is one thing I meant to comment on, but wanted to do more research on first.

The dye price “spike” was largely because the volume of any one dye was so incredibly low. It took minutes for the low priced listed to sell because there weren’t that many of them, leaving only the older high priced dyes on the market.

Per the Dev Blog, having Eternity will grant Twilight and Sunrise, plus the Precursor skins for them as well.

At least that was my understanding of what they said:

If you have an item that has gone through skin progression, like a legendary weapon or one of the Spinal Blade backpacks from the “Escape from Lion’s Arch” and “Battle for Lion’s Arch” releases, you will unlock all of the skins in that direct line of progression. That means that if you made Twilight, you will have access to both the Twilight and Dusk skins across your entire account. Ways to get Exotic Armor:

1. Karma Merchants in Orr – These cost Karma, which you may want to save for your legendary or ascended crafting.

2. Dungeon Merchants – As you’ve found, these require running dungeons. Ascalonian Catacombs and Citadel of Flame have very fast paths available that will speed up the process.

3. Crafting – Get Armorsmithing, Leatherworking, or Tailoring (depending on if you wear heavy, medium, or light armor, respectively) and level it up to 400 to craft exotic level gear. This is going to cost around 20 gold to get to level 400. You will then have more expenses in order to craft the exotic stuff.

4. Buy it from the Trading Post – This can be the cheapest route, if you aren’t looking for the most expensive gear and know how to farm gold (hint: look at item 2 above)

5. World Versus World – You can spend those honor token things for gear at your world’s main base.

6. Hope for random luck drops – This won’t happen, but it is possible so I put it here.

mtpelion.4562

I think you are oversimplifying it by calling it “short term spikes and falls”. The market is substantially different this morning than it was yesterday morning. How long it will remain substantially different is a question, but I suspect longer than would be classified as “short term”.

You seem intelligent pellion (from your other posts), so I’m sure you can imagine a number of different ways ANet could have handled this information to minimize market impact. You probably could envision an alternative implementation that would minimize market impact.

In addition there’s a significant difference between “interpreting a blog” and experiencing the changes “live” in game. Take this exact blog at face value and remove all mention of “receiving unid dyes for duplicates”. That would have minimized market impact now. It would have created fewer unid dyes at patch time. It would have minimized the market impact after the changes went live. I’m not sure how anyone could see this differently.

By “short term” I mean until the patch hits.

Once the patch goes live, people will get a huge influx of Unidentified Dyes. Many of those will be used in order to gamble on getting new colors. The duplicates at that point won’t be able to be converted into Unidentified Dye again, so they will either be dropped in the Mystic Forge for more gambling or sold on the Trading Post.

Since you no longer need to buy between 1 and 50 dyes (depending on the number of alts on your account), the demand for any given dye is now equal to the number of accounts, a much, much smaller number than the number of characters.

This means that after the patch disruption subsides, the price of individual dyes will begin to decline again because there is no demand for them.

The price of dye will be different in the future due to changes in supply and demand, but the prices we see today are the result of speculation and will dissipate once the gamblers are done on patch day.

I would reckon Anet’s argument is this:

There will be significant game changes for unid dyes, so it is fair for them to make the adjustment.

There has never been any significant game changes for doubloons, so it is unfair for them to make the adjustment.

If Anet were to adjust silver doubloon prices on a whim, what kind of precedent does this set?

That means Anet will have to constantly change recipes each time there is a large fluctuation in any item.

I hope they don’t change it, I make some decent money on Silver Doubloons

It’s a self made mess — I hope ANet is enjoying the outcome. Every dye is less obtainable right now due to the price jumps.

I actually like the feature changes — it’s the handling of the information that is buffoonery. They should never release market impacting details before they are “live” in game.

These kind of short term spikes and falls will happen regardless of what and when the information is provided.

Had they held off until patch day, it would have been a price collapse instead of a spike and people would be equally [insert non-“kittened” word for “angry”… seriously, that was censored?] off.

Like load of other folks I was happy about the wardrobe at first till i found out that i now have to fork out 3x the amount of stones to transmute a set for my caracters.

As an altoholic i like my caracters to look good right from the start and was able to transmute a set by doing 2 starter zones and collecting stones enough for a full set.

As of the 15th this is completely out the window as i just know i will not be able to affort those charges. So bye bye good looking alts and hello lame looking alts.

So for me what was suppose to be a friendly system made it totally unfriendly and unusable for me.

Don’t get me wrong tho if the charges are reasonably priced then sure but if they cost the same as crystals now its game over.

They are only more expensive if both of the following statements are true:
1. They are under level 80
2. The price of charges is greater than the price of stones

For item 1, it isn’t too difficult to ignore your character’s looks while they level. I know I do, which is why I’ve got 2 stacks of Transmutation Stones sitting in my bank. So while it could be true, it is also a short term matter since you won’t be sub-80 forever.

For item 2, we don’t know yet, but I assume that the charges will cost the same as the crystals, so it is probably true.

The Gift of Colour has been confirmed to be reduced to 100 Unid’ed Dyes with the patch, so demand will be lower there.

But I DO think that prices for Unid’ed Dyes will stabilise higher than the old price, anywhere between 50s – 1g, due to their greater scarcity. Prices for identified dyes will probably fall due to reduced demand, and the various cooking ingredients used for crafting dyes will rise. (A good thing! Many of them were woefully undervalued.)

Now we just wait for the incoming rage threads about Silver Doubloons not getting the same reduction.

what is going to happen with these things since skin is going to become account bound ?

You’ll be able to trade them in for the new Transmutation Charges.

1 Crystal = 1 Charge
3 Stones = 1 Charge

The only cool, permanent change you have made in over a year, and surprise, surprise, they funnel it thru the gem store, Bravo. Can you just put me on a 15 dollar a month payment plan?

This system was already in the gem store, they are just making it easier to use AND giving you the ability to transmute without destroying any gear.

Hey y’all. With the announcement that 1/3 of our Transmutation Stones (low-level) will be converted to crystals/charges, this seems like the PERFECT Opportunity to start farming farm completion for FREE transmutations in the feature patch!

Each world completion rewards 3 transmutation stones. This means for every map you clear, you recieve 1 crystal.

While that seems slow at first, keep in mind this can easily be FARMED by re-rolling an alt and exploring CITIES Like Rata Sum and The Grove, which are super-easy to 100%.

What this means, is that every 20-30 mins by clearing places like The Grove, you earn 1 Transmutation Crystal, or a chance at BL keys.

What’re you waiting for? START FARMING!

Better idea: Get your map completions done on all your characters! You’ll be rolling in Gift of Explorations and Transmutation Charges!

And…somehow that makes it okay? I’m not really following what you’re saying.

Diablo 3 charges nothing now outside of the price for entry, and it’s doing just fine. Enmasse and Tera charge, quite literally, only for cosmetics or EXP boosts. You can buy really fancy looking weapon skins and armor skins, not unlike the system GW2 already has, yet it costs nothing in game for you to transmog armor that’s available to you in game.

It’s fine that Anet wants to make money off the Gemstore, there’s nothing wrong with that. What is wrong, however, is charging for a feature many people desire to use.

If you charge money for a purely cosmetic feature that no people desire to use you won’t make any money.

Anet could just as easily make a profit by selling purely cosmetic skins, character boosts, bank and inventory slot expansions, and the like, things that aren’t going to really make or break a persons’ enjoyment of the game, instead of locking something like the Wardrobe system behind a pay gate.

That is exactly what this is. A simplified view of purely cosmetic skins that they are selling to you for money.

I think what people seem to be misunderstanding from the complaints to this system is that Anet is monetizing the wrong thing for their consumers. It’s great you’re unlocking all these awesome skins, but it’s too bad you can’t use them without paying Gems, or paying an increasing amount of gold to convert into Gems.

Remember that GW2 was supposed to be a game that wasn’t going to have features locked behind the Gem Store, and was going to simply offer cosmetic and character boosts through it. How quickly that’s changed.

Nothing is locked behind the pay wall other than cosmetic and convenience items… and that’s assuming you are of the belief that there even IS a pay wall (since we have the option to convert gold into gems).

I’m starting to worry people on these forums, and in game, would defend Anet if they started charging Living Story updates through the Gem Store as well.

There might be some people. I wouldn’t mind. That would give me an excuse to avoid doing the Living Story :P
