The Mystery of Countess Anise

I feel that the following exchange from The Dragon’s Reach: Part 2 gives me cause to revive this thread (emphasis mine):

Countess Anise: “This envy of your older siblings ill becomes you. You’d do well to find a way past it.”
Countess Anise: “I think you overestimate the value of being first. A windfallen fruit has never appealed to me as much as one left on the bough to ripen.”
Canach: “You do keep those blades of yours keen, Countess.”
Countess Anise: “Forgive my meddling, petal. It’s just that I see such potential in you.”
Canach: “Petal? I fear you’ve only employed me in order to sharpen your wit—or work on your plant puns. Why not prove me wrong and tell me your true purpose?”
Countess Anise: “All in good time.”
Canach: “Do you treat everyone you encounter like children?”
Countess Anise: (laugh) “You are a delicate flower, aren’t you? So easily bruised…”
Canach: “I have a thick skin. I also learn from my missteps. For example, you fooled me once with your illusions, so now I wonder if you’re truly as young as—
Countess Anise: Do not finish that sentence. Not here, not ever.
Canach: “At last, a substantial response.”
Countess Anise: “Yes, well. You would be wise to remember your place and check that tongue of yours.”
Canach: “When will you tell me why you’ve brought me here?”
Countess Anise: “I’m trying to decide if I can trust you out in the field. I mean, after that nasty business on Southsun. Tsk.”
Canach: “Regardless of what you may believe, I was trying to free those refugees from the Consortium’s exploitation.”
Canach: “I went about it…poorly. Criminally. And I answered for my crimes.”
Countess Anise: “Your intentions in that affair, whether noble or not, aren’t what concern me. It’s your failure to evade capture.”
Canach: “I beg your pardon?”
Countess Anise: “Noble intentions don’t interest me. What I need is a sharp instrument. A knife that can be employed before anyone realizes it’s struck.”
Canach: “Show me where to cut, Countess, and I will be your blade.”

This is the most direct allegation yet that Anise uses magic to mask her true age, and we also get to see her reaction to it.

She could have just been telling Canach not to flirt with her in public.

Who built Divinitys Reach?

King Baede, the king during the time of Zhaitan’s rising, had commissioned Divinity’s Reach to be built. There’s a bit of the details in Sea of Sorrows about it. The city itself was founded a year after Zhaitan’s rise, but it continued construction for a while. It was financially expensive, given that the asura gate Baede commissioned alone cost millions of gold – and the first shipment was stolen by Cobiah at that.

How it was constructed is never delved upon, but given that there was no apparent magic used in ‘fixing’ the Great Collapse, I find it hard to see the city itself being a primarily magical construction.

hmmmm thats really cool to know
I assume magic was used due to the scale of the city
i wonder were all that stone came from?
and i wonder what secrets lie in and under it

There’s at least one quarry right outside Divinity’s Reach to the left of Shaemoor.

i did thiink of that but i thought it was just way to small

Maybe all the rock came from when they carved the cliffs off of that peninsula they build the city on?

You should start with Prophecies and EotN first before doing Factions and Nightfall. It’s just more relevant to what you’re seeing in GW2.

In GW1 you always need to have a party, but you can just fill it with henchmen and heroes. In regard to profession, you can choose any, but be aware that you are supposed to be playing as part of a team, rather than alone as in GW2. As such, you should be aware that a profession like the mesmer is not very much of a direct damage dealer and monks are most useful for healing, but of course there are exceptions.

So I got a thought from what happened at the end of part 1.

With Sohothin suddenly entering the mist….

What if Rytlock returns later from the mist with Rurik with Rurik role being that he would manage to convert some of the Ascalonian ghost to our side or at least rally the Ascalonian Ghost that isn’t under much influence from King Adelbern’s curse to aid us in freeing Ascalon from the Foefire curse.

Of course this would lead to a split in Ascalonian Ghost faction being the ones that side with Rurik can be freed from the Foefire curse easily while the ones still loyal to Adelbern will remain stubborn. However, this would also mean, lore wise, the Charr will have less Ascalonian ghost to deal with without needing to removal all the Ascalonian ghosts wandering Ascalon.

I don’t know if you played GW1, but… well the Ascalonian ghosts might not be too happy when they see what happened to Rurik after he died

Wow… Just Wow.
The new chapter is so buggy, it really doesn’t feel like Guildwars 2. Guys if you can’t make the 2 week releases, do it 3-4. Just don’t release a pile of bugs like this one.
I mean there wasn’t a step that wasn’t bugged:
1- The flamethrower step is on a constant loop. No breaks, its actually annoying. Sure might be intended, but just doesn’t feel right.
2- The sample thing, i don’t know. My story skipped that entirely.
3- The worker jailbreak, getting caught in a cocoon gets you stuck for life, you have to be downed to get out. If you use the 1 skill to struggle out, if you break the cocoon you turn to a shinny green mist and that’s it.
4- The wolves part was probably the only unbugged step.
5- Helping Taimi is ok, but the fight against the Wolf on the crates is so frustrating, the wolf can’t be rooted, and does, of course lots of damage, plus there’s a ton of spots where it runs back and forth, where you get weird “obstructed” messages… Its just a mess. And if you’re downed, scruffy, even in defense mode, just resets and the wolf is quietly sitting waiting for you at full health, with scruffy beside it.
6- The Dolyak phase is not even working… People are just using it to farm champs, cause the Dolyaks don’t move. I mean isn’t that a recycled event that used to run in that area anyhow? How did it get so broken?

Oh my that wolf. It kills my mesmer in three hits. I spent 20 minutes juts running around and dodging in the hope that Scruffy would take care of it for me.

Regardless of the amount of lore that is there, your speculation does not count as lore in any regard.

There have been good scavenger hunts before, see:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Thackeray%27s_scavenger_hunt
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Black_Moa_Chick

However, this is not one of them. Having to go to places to purify items is great, but forcing all of us to spent days running around cutting trees is extremely disappointing. In the hunts I listed above, we were made to run around Tyria to fetch different items, often having to interact with quests to do it. This would be perfect for GW2, but instead they decided to add ANOTHER grindfest, something which they say they don’t want, despite their actions.

Come on, Anet. I’m starting to seriously believe that none of the living world team ever worked on or even played GW1.

And then there’s http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Nicholas_the_Traveler who had some items that were truly terrible to grind for

That’s not a fair comparison because it’s not a scavenger hunt that you only do once. It’s like saying the Zaishen quests were unfair because they forced you to vanquish a zone every day.

Well, the fact that this creature is related to Shadow does offer an interesting point of view. in this thread I tried to identify the (lego) block that make up magic on Tyria, by loosy relating the Gods to the Dragons: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/lore/lore/Perspective-Dragons-Gods/first#content

What turned out at the end was that I was mainly left with:
1. Monk/White powers: which could correspond with the white orb.
2. Shadow Powers (formally assigned to Menzies – obviously my ‘theory’ in this thread pre-assumes the Gods are pretty much gone, and so is Menzies…) …

Then if now there is ‘perhaps’ an underworld Dragon that is linked to Shadow (I would like to add that the link between dragons & orbs is still somewhat ‘in limbo’ and view on it difference in regard to the scholar you talk to, the ‘perhaps’ is a huge one, I personally am of the opinion that there isn’t an underworld dragon, but: ). Or in a sense the powers over shadow, once linked to Menzies, have now manifested itself in the underworld. As part of the breakdown of magic on Tyria during the time of the Dragons.

OP wanted lore regarding SB, not your speculation regarding the new LS.

It’s weird you enjoyed GW1 so much then. That game had some serious design flaws, like copy pasted skill sets that favored quantity over quality. hmmm. I guess rose-tinted glasses are really a powerful thing haha.

Maybe I am a little nostalgic, but I still say that GW1 skills were better. You actually had to plan your skills rather than just equip a weapon and go out, then smash 1 2 3 4 5 on your keyboard until the enemy is dead. Skill bars worked well if you planned your skills to work together (and your equipment). Imagine trying to do a SF Assassin in GW2. You just can’t, because none of the skills are able to work together and you have no freedom to mix and match. I used to farm bosses as a 55hp SV Necro. It is literally impossible to have that amount of control over your character in this game.

I mean only our mentors dying are the only really impactful deaths (well forgel and tybalt, the sylvari was way too happy and annoying. I was happy when she died.)

When the wardrobe system released item names were messed up; they now retain the name of the original item instead of updating to reflect the current skin after being transmuted, which doesn’t make sense for multiple reasons (the biggest being the weird thematic mismatches it causes and the inability to have an item named for a skin-only skin). I thought this had been reported as a bug. Is it ever going to be fixed?

I am also curious if this will ever be fixed. It’s not very important, but my Chorben’s Claymore is really a Fellblade.

Tips/Tricks for GW1 play with GW2?

narwhalsbend.7059

Good idea, I loved GW1 and the story is definitely better than GW2.
Start with Prophecies, then play Factions, then play Nightfall, then play EotN, then play GW;Beyond.

Prophecies is set in Tyria, the same world that GW2 is set in now and you will notice all the references form Prophecies when you go back to playing GW2. (It’s also the best btw).
Factions is set in Asia-inspired Cantha. Lore-wise, you won’t see much to do with the world as it currently is.
Nightfall is set in Elona, which is Africa-inspired. You will learn all about Abbadon in this expansion.
EotN was made after they canceled an expansion and announced GW2. Its basically a lead-in to GW2.
GW:Beyond was more lead-in to GW2 and included the “War in Kryta” and “Hearts of the North” which was about Gwen, Thackery, and Ebonhawke (though they killed the GW1 live team before they actually established Ebonhawke in-game.)
There is also “Winds of Change”, which doesn’t relate to GW2 too much other than showing how all the Tengu came to Tyria as isolationists.

If you check the wiki, you can read about the HoM Calculator. The calculator has certain things you can do and if you do them you will unlock point for rewards in GW2 which you can receive after reaching the Eye of the North in-game and linking your accounts.

Ima throw a theory out here now, a very longshot theory BUT if it was to acctully happen that would be mindblowing epic! (atleast i think so and i guess alot of other Gw1 players do aswell)

Let say Rytlock is freeing Duke Barradin(the true king of ascalon) to release the curse that adelbern put over ascalon, the foefire curse (or whatever you wanna call it)

What happens after? Where does all the ghoast go? Just stop existing? Here is my waky theory. Theese “ghosts” have not just been ghosts, BUT the persons caught in this curse for all theese years. And when Barradin the true king of ascalon makes the curse go away he frees the ghosts or in this case the real humans from their prison of being ghosts and they continue on living their mortal life.

And to go even further that they will rebuild Ascalon city and live side by side sharing the lands of ascalon with the chars. To once and for all create pure peace between long life enemys!

As i said its a waky theory and nothing more! let me know what you guys think of it !

Read the article on the Foefire. You can find it on the wiki.

some other player is there jumping ahead of you for the ore, npc, or loot.

The game doesn’t work like that. All nodes you see are for you only. Other players often have their own resources at the same node locations, but it doesn’t affect your resources.

It works similarly to loot. It could be you solo or a hundred players and nothing would affect what loot you get.

Getting to an NPC first doesn’t matter unless you want to the be one to start every event ever. It really doesn’t matter when you can just jump into the event when you arrive. They are open world events, not single player quests.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/b/bb/Etched_Blade.jpg

The edged blade would instantly be a more effective sword with a much thinner blade. Currently it looks like the proportions are completely off, and not designed by an actual weapon designer.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/0/0f/Dragon%27s_Jade_Lacerator_Skin.jpg
What is this?! The only thing slightly useful seems to be the hand guard. Everything about the blade however is completely impractical, and would instantly get caught on your opponent. When you strike an opponent, you don’t want the blade getting caught on their armor. You want it to pull out with ease, so you can strike that opponent again. Plus the spikes at the top only make the blade more fragile.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/0/09/Crystalline_Blade.jpg
This is not a sword. It could not work in any way shape or form.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/7/77/Dreamthistle_Sword_Skin.jpg
Apart from the fact that it’s almost a light saber, do the thorns around the sword help in any way at all? Is it assumed that the wielder is some how impervious to the thorns, but his enemy isn’t? What would be the point of having a sword that is designed to be painful to wield?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/4/41/Fused_Sword.jpg
Do swords hurt more when they are on fire? Since parts are glowing, doesn’t it damage the structure of the metal? Does it stop burning when you sheath it?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/4/4f/Godskull_Edge.jpg
You know, I can understand turning the lower jaw of a creature into some improv weapon, that’s fine. But why the bands around the edge? Wouldn’t the blade cut through those bands the very next time you use the sword?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/b/b9/Guild_Spatha.jpg
This sword suffers from broken-buster-sword complex. It’s blade width is obviously far too wide to be a useful weapon, and it also seems a bit is snapped off the top (which is no surprise considering the absurdly wide blade).

Not every profession actually strikes with the blade. My mesmer uses swords, but it seems more likely that what does damage is the purple glow that comes off them rather than the blade. Similarly, mesmer greatsword doesn’t even get rear the enemy.

I would pay real cash for some GW content updates now. Or not..if they were written as shoddily as the LS is.

I have to disagree, there is still a reason to play GW1. The profession mechanics were fun to work with and the story lines were great. I would say that people who have played GW2 should play the original and get a taste of what a good story feels like.

Elder Dragons is like a side story of gw2 now. WvW & Spvp are the “end game” lol

Except that Anet said Living Story is end game.

If you didn’t feel like a hero during the personal story when we took back Claw Island, OP, I don’t know what to say.

You mean “AFK: the mission”?

There’s currently only one place you can plant them. They were probably included more for the people that played GW1 than for any real reason.

Champions of Ed's

Actually with the Claw of Jormag, there’s mention of multiple Claws pursuing the kodan Sanctuaries south at the same time, not just one at a time.

Ok. But still once you knock a champ down another takes it’s place (with some exceptions no doubt).

I am under the assumption that we never actually kill the three dragon champions we can fight. They all fly away at the end, except Claw who falls into the lake and disappears until next time.

lore behind shadow of behemoth?

The Shadow Behemoth is just a giant creature made of shadow. During the fight, he summons creatures that come from the underworld.

There is no lore about the Shadow Behemoth itself, but that he comes from the Underworld and the Underworld creatures he spawns are lore-related because he sits right on Godslost Swamp, the site of the former Temple of the Ages.
In GW1, you would go there to be taken to the Underworld. If you swim under the water, you will see the ruins of the statues of the gods that used to be in the Temple of the Ages, minus Kormir of course, who was presumably added in later.

we got through two continents before we saw the tarnished coast and far shiverpeaks in GW1. i’m willing to miss some tyrian regions for some more years in favor of cantha :P

I don’t need EotN parts, just all the Prophecies areas.
Don’t YOU want to know if the statue of the female warrior in the Crystal Desert is standing or not? Huh? Is it not killing you inside?

But we saw it fallen over o_O.

No you didn’t. It was standing one minute, then fallen the second after you looked away.
Then, it was still standing when you saw it from Elona.

No, it was visible standing up from a certain distance, but anytime you actually got close it was fallen.

“Fallen over” meaning already down. Not “We saw it falling over.”

I never said we saw it fall over.
Also, my point about it still being standing when seen in Elona is still valid.

Continuity issues with personal story Maps

Hey guys – I can tell you that we have certainly looked at this issue, even as far back as Lost Shores, and it did come down to technical and logistical problems we are, at this time, unable to solve. Jia Shen is correct that our instances do not use separate maps from the open world, so if those maps change because of a larger world story event, like Lion’s Arch being laid to waste for example, then the story instances that take place in those maps will reflect whatever the current state of the world is.

We do have some limited ability to do phased instancing of certain elements within those maps, but not the kind of sweeping large scale terrain changes that result from the major changes we want to make to the world.

Solving this for our existing instances was not as simple as reserving a custom map for every instance, either, as that would entail a significant number of new maps to be generated, which would all need to be downloaded and stored in the DAT. There are hundreds of instances for the personal story, so even compressed that many custom instance maps would add dozens of GB to your DAT. So at the very least, we determined that we couldn’t accomplish this retroactively, but we are certainly still discussing all the implications of this limitation, and how it impacts your experience with our storytelling.

It’s fine that things get destroyed, but in real life they tend to be rebuilt.
Lions Arch has been sitting there a long time in a destroyed state.
Concordia is a small wooden fortification. With all the Pact resources, it should be able to be fixed up fairly quickly.

It’s fine that things get destroyed – it’s a liking world after all.
However, living worlds also rebuild what was destroyed.

prophecies is the one campaign i never played well, i played the first couple missions on a trial, got past the searing, did like one or two missions (didn’t even realize henchies were a thing, so i was soloing the kitten out of those charrs), and ran out of time.

when i actually bought the game, i bought factions, then EotN, then nightfall. then GW2 came out.

Prophecies was the best though.
