Definitely go with your best gear. I have all ascended trinkets and back, and all exotics otherwise, and I still have a hard time there because of all the conditions and burst damage you can take. If you need a bit more survivability, you could use some Valkyrie and Knight pieces, but you also need to be able to hit stuff hard as many of the mobs are level 83 (best to have help too, of course).
I have tried using just melee but I find you just get too many conditions on you if you do that, so I mostly use GS and rifle. I like rifle for skill 5, to create some space if my dodges are used up.
I also use -condi food and +power utilities. Try to get some CC skills on your bar, and make sure to check your traits to make sure they’re optimum for your weapons/skills.
Literally everything can and will make a difference in SW. Going in with blue/green armor is just going to mean you die too fast, then you’re just spending time waypointing and running, which is no fun. If you have karma or WvW badges, you can get exotic stuff with that. Upgrade your trinkets to at least exotic, as with all your armor and weapons.
If you need gold, you could also try to do a bunch of SW chest farm maps first, sell and salvage everything you can to earn some gold.
In my opinion, traits and the trait system matter so much that it is hampering my willingness to consider buying the expansion. Should the traits be fixed before the expansion, I know I will buy it. Should they not, then no way. I will be uninstalling this game instead. I’ve already waited over 10 months. I think that the company has had ample time to fix it, and in fact have said the current system will be replaced. Timing is everything.
LOLOLOL… the male version looks like Leisure Suit Larry omfg I’m laughing so hard
I’m really upset that I didn’t buy the aviator sunglasses when they were available in the first year of GW2. Could there be a chance they bring these back?
There’s probably a good chance they’ll come back at some time in the future. ANet does that. When? No idea.
Play thief oz. Best class ever! xD
Oh hi Lotus
I have tried a few times to play thief. I have my level 80 still, but it just doesn’t suit my play style; at least not for PvE. I would still like to try it in PvP … eventually.
I just use my credit card :p I have never used gold to buy gems, but I have a good job and lots of spare entertainment cash. IF I had to use gold or had a job paying minimum wage, I would try to plan ahead for sure.
You could choose the option that I and many others have in not completing the personal story. I have over 2k hours in and just have no incilination to do Arah. I don’t have a lot of play time, and I have a really, really hard time being forced to do “X” for a specific amount of time without interruption. So, I will probably never finish it. I don’t care though. It doesn’t stop me from playing any content in the game that I want to.
ETA: I also think this was a bad choice on ANet’s part. You should not have to group up for your personal story. Just my 2 cents.
Decided to switch up the look of my necro to more sci-fi.
Can I please get an invite? I checked and I am only in 2 guilds, so that is not the issue.
I’m not necessarily looking for a dungeon speed clear record. I’ve just noticed a marked change in my warrior’s damage output, especially in places like SW. I go there a lot because I love the map but if I’m on my own it seems to take forever to kill any mob (granted I know some are level 83). As soon as one other person shows up the mob melts. So at the end of it I’m just feeling like maybe I can get a better DPS output from a different class. My warrior is not 100% zerker in SW; I have all zerk except armor, which I switched to Valkyrie for a little extra survivability.
However, I sometimes do dungeons, sometimes do world bosses, sometimes like to go farm in Orr, often like to do WvW and I want to get into PvP eventually. If ele can do all that with better results that my warrior, I’m willing to try it out.
I can’t do thief. I’ve tried. Twice. I have a level 80 that just stands around LA for crafting. I just don’t enjoy playing that class. But since I love my necro I think I can play and enjoy the ele.
punkikatt I have to agree with insanemaniac. Try a guild. My guild is great for all PvX. They help in dungeons, living story, open world, world bosses, PvP and WvW. We have Friday night WvW at reset, then usually one or two other nights during the week they’ll have “theme” WvW… let me tell you, nothing beats a whole zerg of bearbow rangers!! Most fun ever. But even if you don’t fit the “theme” you can still go and have fun. They also do give lessons on WvW tactics, but they honestly don’t care what skill level you have. You don’t have to be on TS either (I almost never use it). We’ve helped many players get their world completion by taking specific objectives.
So yeah, find that kind of guild. The kind you probably won’t want to leave after
OK, thanks all. I will try out an ele. I seem to understand they’re pretty powerful in PvP as well as celestial, but not so great in large scale WvW? I’ll be sure not to step foot into a dungeon until I have some exp under my ele belt
OK, so I read the forums a lot but there have been a lot of “balance” changes within all the classes. Used to be that warrior was pretty ok for PvE DPS (open world and dungeons). But it seems it’s near the bottom of the DPS pile now. So, if I were to roll an alt strictly for damage in PvE, what is the meanest, baddest class out there now? P.S. I only have a warrior, necro and ranger ATM so those are the forums I read. I’m not up on current of other classes).
Oh so on the topic of PvP (see thread OMFG vs. SwAg), I’ve only played my necro in WvW in groups. Can anyone suggest a good build for PvP or GvG? My current WvW and PvE build is power build based mostly on wells, using staff and axe/WH or dagger/WH. I think I started out with Ascii’s well build but incorporated some stuff from spoj’s power build advice.
I haven’t received an invite yet
… is it ’cause I had my name wrong in my original post?
You may have been one of the folks that was already in the maximum number of guilds. There have been a few people I’ve tried to invite but wasn’t able to because they’re over the guild limit.
I’ll have to shoot you another invite when I’m on next though to double check.
OK, I can check when I get home. I thought I was only in 2 (KoR and the one that just has me and one of my kids) but maybe I’m wrong.

I don’t know. My server does some WvW but we’re definitely not top tier, yet I’ve got world completion on 2 toons and will have a 3rd soon enough. Suggestions:
Check in at odd hours if you can. I did a lot of the harder stuff at like 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning.
Also go to EB or your own BL on reset night and play as long as possible.
Saturday during the day is a good time to go to EB and just run with the zerg for as long as possible.
Find and join ONE mediocre WvW guild that can run with you.
Don’t wait until this is the last thing you need, it will get really frustrating, and it WILL take time. It’s kind of a waiting game of when your side owns stuff, when you change colours, etc.
You can do it. Remember too that ranger does have at least one invisibility skill on LB and you can get away pretty well between that and GS. Good luck! Don’t give up!
I play both Ranger and Warrior, though I haven’t taken my Ranger into a dungeon. I believe Rangers are quite accepted in dungeons totally depending on what you bring. If they see you with a bear and a bow, you’ll probably be kicked immediately. I suggest you look at metabattle.com to see the Ranger meta and the Warrior meta. Choosing a meta build for dungeons doesn’t mean you have to use that same build in all things, if you’re not into cookie cutters, but using them in a dungeon will likely get you welcomed rather than kicked.
For a Ranger, pet management is key for dungeons. For a warrior, you simply don’t need to worry about a pet, so it can be easier.
From any other standpoint, I love both these classes. They’re both really fun to play. Do you NEED a warrior for dungeons though? No. Roll one if you want to try it out but you can easily do all content with your ranger.
OMG…. seriously, that’s where those orange bubbles come from? And here I thought my warrior just farts in Halloween colors!! Thank you for bringing this to my attention!!!
I agree. I don’t even have any male toons but I think we should have options for both genders regardless. It’s not fair that only females can have underboob. I’m sure there are some nice burly Norn men that would like to show off some of that too.
I’m loving the new dye selection system. Well done ANet.

We already have lots of skilled and helpful people that would be willing to donate some of their time to teaching you. I’m far from the most skilled in the guild but I’d be more than happy to lend you a hand and some tips as well if you need it.
Don’t worry about being busy, as long as you’re friendly and a Necromancer we’ll gladly take you under our wing and in to our cavernous pits of doom and gloom (: <

- I’m as boring as it gets; 46 years old, a certified accountant
- I work full time and have lots of decisions to make every day along with lots of responsibilities, so when I come online to GW2 I just want to have fun and shut off my brain for a while
- I have 2 grown up kids that introduced me to GW2 (they’re now 24 and almost 21; neither of them still plays, or hardly ever at least)
- I’m not OCD but I am a perfectionist to the Nth degree
- I’m from Canada, so I have a favourite colour (oooo so many "U"s in there eh!), and it’s red
- I love red wine
- my husband and I have a baby, his name is Ozzy and he’s an almost 4 yr old Yorkie who is the sweetest and cutest creature on the planet
- I love seafood but my hubby hates it so I almost never eat it
- I don’t play the TP because I get pretty sick of accounting and economics :pBTW – I really like this thread. I love to learn stuff about people!
I made this last year after some of IoJ’s epic WvW battles.
Ozzy is the Splendiferous Red One flying off into the sunset – inspired by a pic of Ozzy in his “super-dog” halloween outfit.
BooDuh, that is an awesome painting! I’m so happy our super dog inspired you. I don’t think I could ever get as good a shot as that one again. He even looks like he’s about to respond to a distress call…
I look at outfits/armor and faces in cities and in LA but while fighting, no.

I much prefer to buy many things over one big thing. And funny thing is that my “cheaper” stuff is more rare than legendaries. Back when they first came out, I bought a bunch of the Twilight Arbor Aetherpath weapons off the TP. They were around 100g each at the time, but I can say that I never see anyone else with those skins, and I absolutely love the look of them.. way, way more than any legendary I’ve seen so far.
I have a hard time spending gold, and I don’t have the desire to TP flip, but my one way of investing is in buying BL skins and holding them until they go up in value. Just four of these skins bought me Dawn (to make Sunrise, which I sold to buy lots more skins, etc).
I think people are different. Some are savers, some are spenders. I’m a bit of both. I don’t mind forking out 400g for one skin, but I still like to keep at least a few hundred gold in my account at all times. Not sure why, but it makes me not feel poor :p
We need more armor. All kinds (except trenchcoats.. we have trenchcoats and butt-capes coming out our ears!!!). More armor! More armor! More armor! (starting a chant and a wave.. who’s with me??!!!)
oh ok thanks. I thought i had to do VW but I wasn’t aware that was the only way to get the coat
Ya, I am all for rezzing players out in the PvE field, and do so all the time, including at events and champs and all that. However, I also believe that at certain events, like VW, Teq, Grenth, etc, you either need to keep up DPS or you run a WAY higher risk of your own toon getting creamed if you help a fully downed player. I always will rez if someone is downed but not dead, as that takes a mere couple seconds, and only if they are right beside me. If I start to rez and notice the player is fully dead I stop the rez right away.
If I’m fully dead I will WP even if someone starts to rez me right away. But that’s just me. I fully know that many will just lay there. I can cry about it, or I can keep doing my part and hope that the event doesn’t fail.
Because WP cost money, I don’t think ANet can implement an auto WP unless it’s free. Some players will not have enough money (could happen), so if there is a charge, then what? You have to think it through to logical conclusion. Charging a fee on forced WP is not going to fly.
Um, as an aside, how can you buy the coat with crests? This option is not there for me. I was unable to complete the LS and just gave up. Does that mean I’m screwed for purchasing the coat with crests?
I’m all for account bound crafting levels. Personally, I have only 1 toon with crafting to 500, and I don’t even play her. I would love to delete the character, but I can’t, as that would represent hundreds of gold to replace her crafting skills. It is a pain in the behind, to say the least.
I’m still hoping for a Vinewrath that succeeds so I can actually even try for the coat box (only fails so far) …. :-[
I went on a chest farm last night and opened about 40 chests and got zero of anything good.
Kaiser Reinbach Vl – Current armor inspired by FFXIV’s Imperial style and Legatus Gaius Von Baelsar.
Looks fantastic. You should post up the armor pieces and dyes.
In SW for Vinewrath I can verify it woulmd take WAY less time to WP and run to South channel than to lay there for the whole fight. I was fighting at the South lane. People just lay there for eons until until is down. That just makes no sense if it’s about time running back. Ergo I must assume it has to do with them being cheap :p
I’d be fine with auto-WP as long as it was free. As another poster mentioned, the issue is that, at this point, it costs coin to WP. I guarantee that’s why 90% of dead players just lay there. I mean, I did the Vinewrath fight last night and was killed 3 times, and used the WP and ran back, which cost me quite a few silvers. But by the end of the fight (which failed), there so many players laying there dead… there was no way that was going to succeed. I have no issues ressing downed players who are not fully dead. But it’s a total waste of my time, and will get me killed too, to res you if you’re all dead. I think if it were free though, there still may be a FEW players who will still lay there, but not nearly as many.
I don’t want free WP-ing all over Tyria. Just free in certain cases; for world bosses only perhaps.
Considering NPE was created to reduce confusion for new players, I am curious what other players actually found confusing when they were new.
before starting to play a game i have the decency to soak up every single available information about it through external sources. i was never confused about anything.
u so baws. wowwzzzz.
It’s a game. Not a job. I studied for my work. Why should anyone study to have fun in their down time? I’m not saying people shouldn’t try to help. But really, I see this so often on the forums. BE AWESOME OR GET OUT. If other players make you that upset, you should play a single player game maybe.
It’s an MMO. No one HAS to bring an A-game. Some may not care. Some may not know. Some may not speak your language. Some may be 8 yrs old, some may be 78. That’s just the way it’s going to be.
And if that’s the case, no one should complain when said event fails. However, we know that’s also not going to happen given previous evidence and experience.
Which is the point the OP is making.
Ignore in-game whiners/complainers. No need to point to a large part of the player base and blame them for a few … unsavory/lame people.

ETA: a good leader/commander can get the job done by leading, inspiring, and passing on knowledge. By saying someone is “lazy” for following a commander is basically saying a huge part of this game is meaningless.
(edited by ozmaniandevil.6805)
well i can tell you emphatically that the wiki is inadequate. i read it. it did not prepare me at all for the actual fight. in the end the commander just said “DPS” and don’t res people.
My rule of thumb… if you have no idea what you’re doing, stick to the commander like GLUE. Works in PvE and WvW
I stumbled upon my first Vinewrath today. Had no idea about anything to do with the encounter, as I wasn’t expecting it. I simply stuck to the commander and read chat. It’s not hard – though, for some reason, everyone died. I personally ran into a bush and got stuck in it (just like in WvW when you get stuck in siege!) and was killed too. All in all I don’t think the wiki would have helped me, but really it doesn’t seem to hard to follow a commander. That being said, if there is something specific that needs to be done at a specific time, I feel that if there is a commander they should be giving quick guidance and not expect everyone to pull up a wiki. They may not even know what an event is called. Or may not know they can use wiki from the chat window. I think as a commander you have to expect to give instructions regardless of whether you’ve done the event 1 time or 100 times. That’s why you pay the big bucks for the pretty taco.
First time In WvW. Why were all these big mobs of players chasing me down…. I just wanted to look around.
LOL.. my first time in WvW I kept trying to go into towers and keeps, not knowing why I could go in some and not others. I had no idea I had a “color” :p Also, my first time I just ran around and never saw anyone from an opposing team, so I got bored in about 10 mins and left, thinking “I have NO idea what to do here so I’m just going back to my regular stuff!”
One thing I found extremely confusing, was how to get into a PvP match.
After they changed the dailies, I tried my first PvP. I hit some panel that looked like the right one, Play Unranked Arena (looked right to me, it sounded like the lowest level) and was put into a queue for several minutes (repeatedly because the queues would fail).
I complained about the time and queues failing and was told to try an arena. So I clicked on one and was in some sort of observer status. I had no idea how to get out of observer and how to get down there and start playing. (I assumed if you clicked on, join game, you would, ummm, join the game). I tried clicking on my party member’s names, trying to move, etc.. Nothing worked.
I talked to my guildies then and they told me I needed to click on the numbers at the top of the UI which would then pull up a panel on which I would then click on the join blue or red team.
Maybe all that was easy or intuitive to others but I still find the PvP panels not well laid out or informative.
Here here. I agree totally with everything you said.
I’m sure I bought a few when I first started, mostly XP and magic find ones. But then I started using BL keys (some purchased, some farmed) and ended up with so many boosters from there that I’m sure it would take me a long time to use them all.
I actually find most of them pretty useless. You can’t use any armor or regen boosters where you really need them (PvP/WvW). With account wide luck and omnomberry bars the magic find boosters are not necessary. I think the XP boosters coupled Killstreak XP boosters are a good way to increase speed of leveling. The karma boosters could be handy if you’re new and really want to bump your karma quickly (and play lots of WvW). Those are the only ones I might be tempted to purchase if I really wanted to buy boosters. But even then, I’m sure it doesn’t cut down leveling by hours, so you certainly don’t NEED them.
Everything! I had never played an MMO, and hardly played any other video games. I have to say I was hardly interested in playing the game until I started reading the forums and finding out all the good stuff. For a long time I just wandered around not knowing about tiers of gear, or how levels worked, or how sigils worked, or most importantly, how the TP worked. I was sooooo poor for soooo long. No idea of builds or traits or anything.
Thank goodness for the “Players Helping Players” subforum. It literally saved my gaming life. I would have never continued to play had I not found the sticky about all the stuff you NEED to know. And ya, you do need to know it to get the most out of the game.
I also have to say, that if it were just up to the ingame “systems” and (non-existant) “help” put in by ANet I would have quit. No question. This game is not newbie friendly. At all. The NPE is not even CLOSE to being helpful. All it does it gate stuff that is actually easy to figure out.
Here are a few different looks I’ve had for my warrior (human).
hello next page. y u no work?
