Thanks Zoso and insanemaniac. I’ve watched some learn PvP videos by Wooden Potatoes, so I can see the downsides to Hot Join, for sure. I do need to learn the maps though, so gonna have to bite the bullet for a bit on that.
As a condi/tank ranger, do I want to stay on a point and defend it once I have it (assuming a lot there!), or go between Home and Far? If I see a teammate going down do I stay put or go help them? I guess I’m just unsure if I should be roaming or defending point? Also, once I get into soloQ I just want to understand what my teammates would expect of me so I don’t tick people off too badly!
Hi Benjamin. Thanks for the reply. What are side points and plus one fights?
Hi, I want to start PvP with my ranger. I read the sticky above on New to PvP? It helps a bit, but I am unsure about positioning. I want to play a condi/tank ranger to start. What should be my role? Is there still a Hot Join? Is it pretty much required to have TS and a mic?
I personally do not like the idea of traits as loot. More RNG? No thanks. So I might have to kill this champ 300 times in HOPES of getting a trait? No thanks. Then you get said trait maybe 50 times and have to delete it because you only have 3 toons? No thanks. I see bloodstone dust everywhere. I don’t want to see trait books everywhere too. Sorry, but I cannot get behind this.
Yes, as FrownyClown says, you need the ones that are green, and when you get close to them you can “charm” them, if you’re a ranger. I think that since the NPE came in they’ve removed a lot of the juvenile animals that you can charm from the starter areas. The wiki should have a list of where to find them though.
Just to clear up misconception, since the NPE came in, WvW is only available at level 18 and PvP is only available at level 22.
WvW and PvP are available at any level as you can just walk through the portals to get there. You don’t get informed about them until levels 18 and 22. Big difference. Also I believe the hotkeys still work (admittedly a brand new player won’t know what those hotkeys are unless they’ve been messing around in the settings).
Well feel free to update the wiki then. It is apparently completely incorrect.

Kurrilino is my new hero. +1 for you.
Well I hope ANet’s plan is coming off as intended. After 2 years I now just log in and log back out. As for today’s dailies, it is the perfect example of why I am now not even actually playing this game. Fractal, plus fractal as PvE daily.
Well done ANet. I have finally moved on, so my husband thanks you.
Thanks to everyone who posted to my questions. I’ll try out some of the suggestions here and see how it goes
I think for me it boils down to that before this change, I would do one daily and get 1 AP, etc. Now, I MUST do 3 things (usually 1 of which is a ROYAL pain in the kitten) to get ALL the AP. I don’t really care if I get 10 AP, but I would like some. I have no choice now. I HAVE NO CHOICE. Every time now I’m stuck in a map I don’t want to be I make sure to make a comment to ANet in map chat about how much I do not enjoy this new system. Sure hope the new players are listening.
Anyway, as for today, I went to whatever place to do the 4 events. I notice now people won’t even call out events. WHY? Because, if you do, 200 people swarm it and it’s over in 3 seconds. So ya, now you have to PROTECT whatever event you stumble on because it’s INSANE.
GG Anet. GG. Do you EVER think this stuff through?? Ever??
Edit: Just to be not a total kitten complaint, how about you get 2 AP for doing 1 daily, 5 for 2, and then 10 for all 3? That would probably help from this all or nothing nonsense.

For SW in general you need lots of condi cleansing, CC, stability and burst. I ended up switching out my full zerker armor for some Valkyrie as well as taking all those skills with me and I do alright (unless I’m stuck at blue by myself taking on 12 mobs at once :-[
So is the power LB ranger a good PvP build now too? Is that a GS/LB combo? I think I’m just a bit worried that if I try to go full zerker, being new, I’ll get my butt handed to me, which is why I was thinking some kind of condi/highly defensible build might be a better starting point.
misterman noticed the same thing I did. Wherever and whatever you have to gather…ANet has cut out A LOT of those nodes.
Thanks for the help. I’ve been trying out all the ranger weapons in PvE and so far I really like the axe/torch combo, I also like LB, GS and SB. I really haven’t gotten the hang of the MH sword. I tried turning off AA on it but I still find my positioning while using it is just totally off. Is axe/torch an ok replacement for s/d? Or would a/d be ok? Is ranger just really not the best class to bring to PvP?
My other toons are necro and warrior. When looking on those forums I see a lot of QQ about those classes at the moment. Necros especially seem to be at an all time low. So I was hoping my ranger would be the best choice for PvP.
Hi all, I’ve been looking on metabattle at ranger PvP builds and see several listed. Can anyone suggest what might be best for someone quite new to PvP (I’m currently level 4 rabbit)? I’m also fairly new to ranger but so far I love it. I’ve got about 58% map completion on my ranger so far and would love to play it more. I also play warrior and necro, but I really think ranger would be most fun for PvP.
Anywho, I’m thinking staying away from power ranger and going with something with condi/sustain/survivability.
Any advice would be appreciated. If anyone has seen some of my other posts, no, I don’t normally PvP but I’d really like to try it.
So ya, for today PvE: vista (easy – ANet gold sink for wp fee), tree gatherer (easy – ANet gold sink for wp fee), kill maw and 4 Southsun events.
So ya, 2 easy ones. I went to maw and it was literally killed seconds before I got there, so SOL on that as I can’t wait another 1.5 hrs for it to spawn. Go to Southsun and nothing but people running ALL OVER looking for events. In about 15 mins I managed to get a bronze on one event, and was so frustrated and PO’d that I just left. I ended up going into our guild PvP arena for the first time and we all just let each other kill each other. How fun is that??!!
Seriously. Hate. The RESTRICTED dailies. It is totally ruining things IMO.
After a few days, here’s my feelings on the new daily system:
1. I like the reward for logging in, personally, because I DO log in every day, even if I just look at my outfit or do a bit of mapping, or whatever. Sometimes I’m only on for 15 mins. It’s nice.
2. While it is cool that you only need to do 3 daily “tasks” instead of 5, I am not a fan of the tasks required, TBH. If I only have, say, 20 mins to play, I’m not doing any WvW, since it takes too long to get anywhere in there. I do not PvP, nor do I want to. So that leaves choosing 3 of the 4 PvE dailies. Usually 2 are ok, like gather ore HERE or view vista THERE (thanks for the WP gold sinks hah!). But then it’s a choice of bad alternatives. I can’t wait around for a world boss to show up. Period. I don’t do fractals or dungeons, as I can’t use TS. So hey, ok, do 4 events HERE. Well, ya, where to find those events? And now map chap is just “events??” “where’s events” “where are the events” “events here.. oh wait it’s already over”. And if you happen across an event, there are SO MANY PEOPLE you probably won’t get credit anyway because you can’t hit anything fast enough.Honestly, ANet, why? Why do you keep herding everyone to certain areas? I’m really starting to DISLIKE this game because of it. I want the 10 AP, so I want to do the dailies. But just stop with making us do what YOU want us to do. You’re ruining your game.
I completed yesterday’s dailies in under five minutes. The longest bit of it was finding the site plants. Which took about three minutes. The vista was best instant, and then I hopped into PvP and capped a point, which took less than a minute. I later learned that creating exotic luck also counts for exotic crafter, which is also trivially easy.
Think outside the box.
Thanks for your input, but I was stating MY feelings and experiences on it. I’m glad you had fun. I’m not really liking less choice. Simple as that.
Actually you made two assertions. One, you don’t like the more specific requirements, and two, that they take too long. However, in the old system getting 10 ap took much much longer and required doing more things.
While it’s nice to now get 10 AP for doing 3 dailies, I never tried to get 10 before. I simply did the 5 required to get the laurel. I often got more than that just by playing the things I wanted to play though. Now I have found I really do need to go out of my way to get the AP part. I found the prior system had more choice and less strict “performance requirements”. This is my experience.

I agree. I have several of these in my bank gathering dust and really wish I could do something useful with them. And I don’t even do fractals, so I can imagine many others have many more than I do (bank tabs full I’m sure).
I crafted an exotic inscription and sold it on the TP for 7g
I should really know better… I just deleted stacks and stacks of these things before the update :-[
It won’t matter if you level “normally” or through PvP or crafting. You will STILL have (almost) not traits when you hit 80. Such is the trait system (fiasco) in this game.
To be fair Marnor, some people have stopped playing since this trait system was implemented, and come back here (to the forum) in hopes of finding change. Seeing none, they again voice their anger/frustration about it.
I think everyone in this thread is sincere in their HOPE that ANet is actually working on this despite their lack of communication on the issue.
Crafting is the fastest way to level but you will need about 200g if you buy everything off the TP. Check gw2crafts.net.
Charrbeque thanks very much for posting that!
“I want to get a legendary by just farming Queensdale. Anet will not allow me to do this. How dare they not let me play how I want.”
But getting legendary by just farming Queensdale is possible. Might take a while though.
But thanks to RNG it could also happen on the first day in the first 5 mins.
All you have to do is log in each day, after reset, and you’ll get a laurel.
Awesome, ty
Can anyone confirm if you get a laurel for daily still?
I typed KITTEN out manually, so this is a legit title.

I am a level 80 mesmer from using tomes and crafting.
I now have some experience on my mesmer in PvP.
I wanted to play WvW with guildmates because I feel decent enough at mesmer now.I have no traits in PvE or WvW.
I need to pay gold that I don’t currently have to unlock traits.
I need a TON of skill points that I don’t have because of buying skills, to unlock traits.I can’t play WvW with my guildmates on my level 80 mesmer tonight.
TY for this new system that I recently got the displeasure of experiencing.
I will probably not be telling my friends to buy Guild Wars 2…Ok so, you skipped your way to 80 without experiencing most of what the game has to offer on your character … .
Is there anything in the game you are no longer able to do once you hit level 80? When I powerleveled my characters to level 80 I had access to everything they had access to at level 2 plus much more. I went back on my level 80s and did the low level personal story quests, dungeons, zones and crafting with zero problems.
I could be wrong now though. I haven’t leveled a character to 80 with the new trait and npe changes.
Traits are now unlocked by purchasing each one from the trainer with skill points and gold OR … completing PVE content. Some of the content is not reasonable for the level of trait but still, you are correct. If you are level 80, there should be NO issue for someone to go out, complete the task to get the traits they need and buy the GM ones they need.
The OP’s complaint is sad. Does anyone actually reasonably think they should have a playable, trained character by powerleveling from sitting around a crafting table? I don’t think so …. unless the whole point of the character is to RP crafting.
But… when the game launched you just bought a trait book for a few copper, silver, or a couple gold. So…. why was that changed? I would totally understand the changes had they just required some difficult content to get the new grandmaster traits, and then charged a bit more if you wanted to just buy those. But really? Completing an entire boring map that I’ve completed many times already, for a beginner level trait? That’s just uncalled for considering it requires no skill either, just time. So why the difference if someone uses that time crafting or map completing the same map they’ve probably done before?
Not everything should be locked behind blah blah content man. Traits are a huge, huge part of your character. If you think otherwise, I have to assume you’ve “grown up” in the game since the change and believe that having 6 traits at level 80 is “normal”.
ANet is really just trying to create “progression” in an area that they should have just left well enough alone as it is a CORE part of the game and character use.
•Completing daily achievements no longer awards players with achievement points.
•A new Daily Completionist achievement has been added and is earned by completing any combination of daily achievements from the three categories.
•Completing the Daily Completionist achievement rewards players with 10 achievement points. The vast majority of your player base is PVE only. A lot of this player base want to be able to get achievement points the way they want to. Not the way YOU want them to.
Trying to coerces the vast majority of your player base into game styles they utmostly despise is a VERY BAD idea.
If you do not change that, I predict you will loose a good chunk of your PVE player base.
I am a bit confused over all the rage… at first you get 6AP for 6 dailys and a standard reward.
The new system gives you 10AP for 3, plus additional rewards, plus a reward for just logging on. There is 4 PvE related dailys that are slighly more specific, you don’t have to step out of PvE to get your daily and you get more rewards.
How do people still find a way to complain about this?
People tend to dislike less choice over more choice? Just a thought.
I just honestly don’t see why resources keep being wasted on changing dailies (4 times now?!) yet the trait system FIASCO has been ongoing since April 15 with NO FIX.
I wish I could scream and ANet could actually hear it.
You can’t really see any white knights in here posting because the BEST they can say about this system is “it isn’t game breaking so pay and get over it”, or “it COULD BE WORSE”. Ya, there’s a shining endorsement if I ever heard one!
What ANet has now is a bunch of new players running around with cookie cutter builds or worse, using whatever traits they happened to get while actually doing what they wanted, with no actual BUILD at all. Ya, really want those guys in my dungeon party! There is no progression if you get to the end of the journey and are no better off than you were at the start.
Just go out in the world like everyone who started since April 15… with maybe 6 random traits. That’s a build now, don’t ya know? ’Leet too.
Hmm, why don’t pets keep their names? I find myself having to rename them quite often.
I have a norn ranger with:
Bear – Bearly There
Marsh Drake – Snuffles
Raven – Billie Birdface
I’m soooo bad at pet names XD
Not as bad as my son used to be though. We got a kitten with a white streak down it’s head and he suggested the name “Crackhead” XD… he was only 8 after all. Now he’s great at naming pets, such as the 2 rats he used to have, Bronson (Charles) and Waffles.
2409 hrs never had a drop. one from MF after (i’m sure) throwing in more rares and exos than the thing was worth.
I’ve been getting lots or charged cores in Silver Wastes plus a few actual lodestones. You may want to concentrate farming there.
I almost feel ANet are like the agents in The Matrix. They believe that people being in a place that’s too good will make them unhappy. That’s the best analogy I can think of for what they end up constantly doing….. hey look we gave you this… (mumblemumblebuttookawytwootherthingswhileyouwerentlookingmumblemumble). Can’t have us being too happy?
I was so excited to find out retraits would be free. Had I know it would be at the cost it has been, I would WAY rather pay the few silver to respec than have the system as it is now. I am NOT happy with the trade off. At all.
CHANGE TO TRAIT SYSTEM.
That is all.
This is the real flaw in the mailing system: no history of sent messages and no possibility to withdraw a message as long as the receiver didn’t read it yet or took any attachments.
I’ve often thought this very strange myself. I think a history of 10 emails sent, as well as 10 emails received, is reasonable. I also like the possibility of being able to withdraw the mail as long as it hasn’t been opened.
That just stinks. I’m at work now so will send something later, but I know this has happened to many, many players, myself included. As others have stated, I’m happy that I never sent anything crazy expensive to the wrong person, but I can only imagine how disheartening the whole situation can be.
You’re a good friend. I’m sorry this happened to you. Shame on the person who would not return the sword.
Ya, if you want to dungeon run, do not roll a necro. Guardian or warrior is a good safe bet. Warrior you can use in all areas of PvE and WvW to great effect – usually faceroll everything and you have good health/sustain. Guardians are always needed but if you’re out mapping and stuff can take longer to kill trash mobs. But fun to play.
Cybrdroyd, welcome to Tyria. If you want to keep your experience fun, just stay off the forum. The actual game is great if you like exploring. I’m sure you’ll have a great time. I haven’t played any other MMOs but I’ve put in over 2000 hrs here and I still play every day
Also this is most definitely about newbies, since we (the veterans) are not only concerned about how we received the change, but about how poorly “equipped” new players are to get all the traits organically, or buy them for ridiculous amounts of gold. Seriously, if this had been in the game from the start, I guarantee you I would never have stuck with the game. Now I am a veteran, and I find it just as hard to swallow. I’m not going to literally throw away 42g and 300+ skill points for one character’s traits. I don’t care if I have 50g or 5000g. That’s just not going to happen. And I’ve got world completion on 2 toons already and most of a 3rd. I’m done with it. I’d rather not be forced to do it again.
So, bottom line is that when I get bored with the 3 toons I have, I will leave the game rather than make another alt, because this trait system is. just. bad.
I don’t think anyone is actually disagreeing with Miku. Merely stating the fact that in PvE (not including speed clear dungeons) you can use anything you like. Different weapons are used for different reasons. Perhaps only because a person feels they “like the feel” of it, regardless if it takes them 1, 2 or 3 seconds longer to kill a mob. That doesn’t make using those weapons WRONG.
I am a bit bewildered as to why you’re doing stuff in game that you detest and loathe? Why not play the parts of the game that you enjoy? smh….
I don’t know… why does ANet put bad content in the game and then give account bound rewards tied to RNG?
I did not look at every recipe the vendor has. When I went to craft the staff, I moused over the inscription and it just says “account bound on acquire”. I assumed then it was a drop. I didn’t check the wiki. BTW the wiki says you can get them from chests in Dry Top as well, so I was half right :p
Jeez people, no reason to get rude about stuff. Take a breath maybe.
